Best Times to Visit Rajasthan and When the Monsoon Is

The largest state in north India, Rajasthan, is rich in glorious history, magnificent palaces, and desert scenery. It's well-known for its colorful cities: pink Jaipur, blue Jodhpur, red Bikaner, white Udaipur, and golden Jaisalmer.

Rajasthan shares a similar climate pattern with most of India , i.e., there are three seasons in Rajasthan: the dry season (October to March), hot season (April to June), and monsoon season (July to September).

The dry season is undoubtedly the best time to visit Rajasthan weatherwise. However, you could enjoy better prices and less crowding during the hot season and wet season.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan: October to March

Hottest time to visit rajasthan: april to june, the monsoon in rajasthan: july to september.

During this period, your trip won't be affected by the weather. The daily high temperature averages around 27°C (80°F). Even in the coldest month, January, the daily temperature reaches around 23°C (73°F).

But you need to prepare for the cool/mild nights and early mornings when the temperature drops to 15°C (59 °F) on average.

With dry and cool weather, you can pleasantly indulge in tiger safaris, camel safaris and desert camping. For closer interactions with locals, don't miss Rajasthan's colorful festivals, such as its Kite Festival in January, Desert Festival in February, and Holi in March.

Best Times for the Most Favorable Weather

December to February is the best time to visit Rajasthan with mild–warm temperatures and only very occasional light rain. You'd have plenty of sunshine hours and enjoyable daytime temperatures of around 16–26°C (61–79°F).

During this peak season with the best weather, most travelers head to Rajasthan to comfortably admire its beauty. The number of travelers typically reaches its peak between December 22 and January 7. So do the prices!

Best Times for Good Weather and Better Prices

September to November is the transition from the monsoon season to the dry season. Meanwhile, March is when Jaipur changes from warm to hot weather, when all the day is still comfortable for outdoor activities if you are willing to risk a light shower or slightly higher temperatures reaching 30°C (86°F) on average.

Visit Udaipur and Jaipur for cooler temperatures in March . Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are drier between September and November.

Besides generally acceptable weather, fewer crowds and lower prices make March and September–November good times to travel to Rajasthan.

April to June is regarded as the regional summer or hot season in Rajasthan. Due to the desert climate, the average high temperature hovers at 38°C (100°F), though it falls to around 25°C (77°C) at night.

If you can bear the heat, having the attractions to yourself and paying the lowest prices would be your reward . For example, you could stay at a luxury resort just paying around a peak-season 4-star-hotel room rate.

Except for the desert safaris, most other attractions are available , including the splendid palaces and forts. You are advised to explore them in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the extreme heat. A private air-conditioned car and cold drinks (which we provide on our tours) would be the ideal complement to hot-season sightseeing.

If you'd like a cooler place on your Rajasthan tour, you're suggested to visit Mt. Abu , the famous hill station in Rajasthan.

What is the Hottest Month in Rajasthan?

The highest temperatures usually occur in May, soaring above 40°C (104°F) . Then, it is challenging to enjoy Rajasthan due to the sweltering heat!

Meanwhile, dust storms might blow up in the desert areas. Udaipur (city of lakes) and Mt. Abu (hill station) are the more comfortable places in Rajasthan to travel to .

Hot May is the ideal time to spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park, though . Thirsty tigers are likely to be seen near lakes or rivers.

Rajasthan's monsoon rainfall approaches at the end of June, peaks in July and August, and fades away in September. During the monsoon season, Rajasthan becomes cooler and the greenery makes it more charming.

Thanks to its desert climate, most cities in Rajasthan receive only low to moderate rainfall . The closer you get to the Thar Desert, the less rain you should encounter. Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer are great drier-weather getaways in the wet season. A trip there would rarely be affected since they just get 1–5 rainy days a month during the monsoon season.

If you travel in August, you might have a chance to experience the Teej Festival (August 7 in 2024). You might see local girls and women dancing and singing to celebrate the monsoon.

In this rainy low travel season, you'll get great deals from hotels and airlines. The calm environment, subdued by downpours, adds more charm to the "Land of Kings".

If you're keen to have a wildlife safari, especially a tiger safari, you'd better avoid the monsoon month s, because most national parks in Rajasthan are shut.

What is the Wettest Month in Rajasthan?

In Rajasthan, the heaviest rainfall arrives in July and August, but the wettest month varies from city to city. Considering the most popular cities, July is the wettest month in Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, while Jaipur and Jaisalmer are wettest in August.

According to the records, there are just 10 rainy days at most in Rajasthan's wettest month . So, you would still have a lot of sightseeing hours in July/August. Keeping your itinerary flexible is highly beneficial to minimizing the negative effects of rain showers.

It is still preserved carefully along with all the belongings inside the palace put on display.Architecture of City Palace - The City Palace is a marvellous blend of Rajputi, Mughal and European style of architecture. The walls reflect the authentic Mughal style which features distinct murals, mirrors and latticework. A unique feature found in Pritam Niwas Chowk is that it has four gates, which depicts all the four seasons. First one is Mor Gate which portrays Autumn Season, then it is Leheriya Gate which represents spring season followed by Rose gate drawing winters and Lotus gate painting a picture of the summer season. All this makes the entire palace a remarkable structure left behind by history.

The best time to visit Rajasthan is the cooler, drier period between October/November and February/March.

This period avoids the peak summer months of April-June when temperatures soar and things become uncomfortably hot, and also the monsoon season of July-September, which can bring significant disruption.

When to visit Rajasthan

Seasons, climate and best months to visit.

Rajasthan may be one of the driest states in India, but its geography means its climate is more varied than you might think.

The arid Thar Desert bordering Pakistan sees little rainfall and experiences extremes of both high and low temperatures, while southern cities like Udaipur are more temperate. Jagging across the state from southeast to northwest is the Aravalli mountain range, which is the source of several cooling rivers.

Rajasthan month by month

The best time of year to visit Rajasthan is between October and March , avoiding both the monsoon and the heat of summer.

October and November are festival season, with Diwali, Pushkar Camel Festival and Jodhpur’s International Folk Festival all taking advantage of the cooler evenings. Be aware that the mid-winter months of December and January can get quite chilly, particularly in the villages around the Thar Desert, where night temperatures can reach freezing.

Visit in March to experience the colourful Hindu festival of Holi, when temperatures are beginning to heat up. Join revellers in throwing powdered colours and water at each other in this celebration of the start of spring.

The full force of summer begins in April , with temperatures regularly soaring above 35C.

Most visitors avoid the heat between April and June , although the drier climate means tiger sightings are more likely in the national parks as they venture out in search of water. Travellers choosing to visit at this time should spend some time in the Aravalli range, joining locals escaping the heat. Head to the hill station of Mount Abu for some respite from the worst of the heat.

Monsoon season is between July and September , when even Ranthambore National Park closes, such is the ferocity of the rain. Head instead to the Aravalli range, where lush greenery takes over, or to the lakes of Udaipur. The rain means most tourist sites are deserted, which makes it a less crowded — if wet — time to visit.

Festival-2

Pushkar Camel Festival

Festivals and Events

The cooler months of January and February bring out Rajasthan’s artistic crowd, with the annual Jaipur Literary Festival taking place in January. The festival attracts world-famous authors, poets and musicians. For something slightly different, head to the three-day Jaisalmer Desert Festival (normally falling in February), featuring camel races, puppetry and insights into desert life.

March is all about Holi, the festival of colours which welcomes in spring. Gather around a traditional bonfire to celebrate the demise of the demoness Holika on Holi eve, before joining in the ‘festival of love’ and colour-throwing the next day.

The summer heat of April to June sees the Islamic holy month of Ramadan (dates change each year) and the three-day eid-al-fitr celebration at its end. To escape the sun, climb to the hill station of Mount Abu and its Summer Festival, with traditional music, boat races and carnivals.

The monsoon season sees Rajasthanis retreat indoors, but August 15th brings India’s Independence Day, a celebration of succession from the United Kingdom in 1947. The end of the monsoon in October sees two major Hindu festival — Navratri, which celebrates the goddess Durga, and Diwali, a five-day blowout of gift-giving and fireworks.

If you’re after a festival with a difference, visit Pushkar’s Camel Festival in November, complete with camel races and trading.

Intrepid Travel Blog

From Delhi to Udaipur, here are the five Rajasthan cities I think you should visit in India

A group of cows lingering on a street in the Jaisalmer fort

Every single city in India is magnificent, so believe me when I say it was hard to narrow it down to just five.

As a child, I was fascinated by Bollywood movies full of colour and passion, thanks to a best friend’s love of the genre (and my love for all things drama). As a teenager, getting a rich, tomato-y butter chicken with (extra) garlic naan was always my go-to takeaway. Now, as an adult, I can’t get over the transcendent story of love behind the creation of the Taj Mahal – spoiler alert, I still can’t. So, when deciding which country to visit on my annual trip, India was a no-brainer.

India has been on my must-visit list for a while, however, the thought of travelling there was a little overwhelming. I wanted to go, but I didn’t really know how. Could I brave the language barrier and cultural differences and explore the country on my own? Or would I need a local guide to show me where to buy the creamiest lassi and how to avoid getting kicked by a curb-side cow?

I went with the latter on Intrepid’s 15-day Rajasthan Experience tour. It was still overwhelming, but these five cities made me appreciate this kaleidoscopic country in a whole different way and if it were up to me (it’s clearly not), no one would travel to India without visiting them.

*Disclaimer, I know not all of the cities I’ve listed are technically in the state of Rajasthan, but we still visited them as part of the Rajasthan Experience tour, so I’ve included them in this blog anyway.

The imposing structure of Jama Masjid in Delhi under a blue sky

You can read all the travel guides and do hours of research, but nothing prepares you for the sensory overload of Delhi. Home to nearly 33 million people, this city pulsates all around you with sights, tastebud-tingling smells and noises so loud and constant that you start to wonder whether you’ll ever experience peace and quiet again.

Delhi was the meeting point for the start of the adventure, so there were no tour activities included, but I had some time to explore the city before the welcome meeting. Now Delhi is etched in my mind as the place where I dived into India’s culture, headfirst.

From the marble domes and towering minarets of Jama Masjid to the frenzied Khari Baoli market street where turmeric, cumin and powdered red chilli rub shoulders with cashews and peanuts in bags by the kilo, it was the perfect place to get my feet wet – literally. A few Hindu temples in Delhi required us to remove our shoes and place our feet in a trough full of marigold-infused water as a sign of respect, cleanliness and humility before we could enter.

We only spent one night in Delhi, but that was all it took to get me excited. Yes, I was still feeling apprehensive, but my nervousness was slowly and surely being replaced by anticipation of the coming adventure.

A flock of birds flying over the Agra Fort.

After a brief, air-conditioned train ride (that’s important when temperatures of 35˚C+ are expected), we arrived in Agra. I was ready to do some hardcore sightseeing. By that, I mean I wanted our leader to point me toward the Taj Mahal the second we stepped out of the station. Before he could make my bucket-list dreams come true however, we had a fort to visit – Agra Fort.

The Agra Fort, an icon in its own right, can often be overlooked for the famous Taj Mahal nearby. It was originally built out of vivid red sandstone by Emperor Akbar as a military structure in 1565, but in my eyes, this grand majestic building could easily have passed for a palace. It was that striking. The rich red colour of the sandstone, paired with the Mughal architecture that was common during the era, blew my sweat-soaked sandals off. I did warn you about the heat.

People walking around the grounds of the Taj Mahal in Agra

And from its ramparts, I caught my very first glimpse of the Taj Mahal (there may or may not have been some anticipatory squealing).

The Taj Mahal was everything I expected it to be. I knew Emperor Shah Jahan had built it in loving memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, but I didn’t realise you’d be able to sense that same love coursing through the structure’s white marble and providing life to the grounds’ lush greenery.

I know it sounds corny and cliché, but when I entered this sacred complex, a certain peace came over me. Like nothing bad could, or would, ever happen here. There might’ve been a couple hundred people walking around, but it was so quiet. Almost as if everyone there recognised they were in the presence of a greater devotion – one that time had stood still for. To put it mildly, I was in complete awe. I ended the day feeling grateful that Emperor Jahan was thoughtful enough to share his love in a way we could all feel 391 years later.

The honeycomb like architecture of Hawa Mahal in Jaipur.

Jaipur was next, and I was excited to leave the reds and whites behind for hues of pink. Before you ask, no, Jaipur’s not going through a Barbie phase (although who could blame it if it was). The city was painted pink in 1876 in preparation for a visit from Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

Fast forward around 150 years and this friendly city continues to honour its pink heritage by incorporating pink materials in new construction.

We started our day with a (pink) bang at Hawa Mahal, constructed in 1799.

Shaped like a perfectly preserved honeycomb, this beautiful palace was once home to female royal family members so they could observe the happenings in the street below without being seen themselves. It was originally made with pink sandstone and then pink-washed before Prince Albert’s visit as a sign of Jaipur’s hospitality. With intricate details that combine aspects of both the Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal design styles, it’s easy to see how it’s fit for a queen (bee).

Coloured architecture isn’t the only thing that makes this city unique. From taking a ride with an all-female powered rickshaw company in search of street snacks to watching a Bollywood heartthrob defeat the bad guys in one of Jaipur’s oldest cinemas (my inner child was screaming), you’ll never get bored exploring the city’s fascinating culture and heritage. I certainly didn’t.

Cow lounging in front of the entrance to Jaisalmer Fort in Jaisalmer

Next up on Rajasthan’s city colour wheel is Jaisalmer, or as it’s more affectionately known, the Golden City. I didn’t have any expectations of Jaisalmer. I’d never heard of it before travelling to India and if I’m being honest, I wasn’t all that excited for a two-night stop here.

As we drove along the dusty, desert road that would deliver us straight into the city’s heart, listening to our leader talk about Jaisalmer’s hilltop fort, snaking alleyways and intricately designed houses, my interest was piqued.

Like a lot of cities in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer has its own fort. While most forts have been turned into museums and listed as World Heritage sites, Jaisalmer’s stronghold stands out as the largest out of the few living forts left in the world. Around 3,000 people still live within the fort’s walls much like they would’ve back when it was built out of yellow sandstone in 1156.

Making space for wandering dogs and cows rummaging for food, our local leader led us through the fort’s maze of temples, boutique shops, old havelis and traditional hotels. When the heat became a little too much, we stopped at a café, cracked open a cold can of Sprite and admired the spectacular views across the whole city. Talk about a pinch-me moment.

While the fort may have been the star jewel in Jaisalmer’s crown, there were plenty of other places to explore. We visited the city’s garment district with its rich colours and textured fabrics and we enjoyed moments by Gardisar Lake, where a calm surface reflects the temples and shrines along the water’s edge.

The grand walkway up to the city palace in Udaipur, India

Picking my favourite city in Rajasthan is like loving one pet more than the other or choosing between tikka masala or lamb vindaloo for dinner. But if I had to pick one, it would be Udaipur (and tikka masala). If you’re also wondering whether it has its own colour, it does. Udaipur is known as the White City thanks to its pristinely preserved marble palaces.

The whole city is simply remarkable and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take my breath away, but that also could’ve been the heat that hit me when I stepped off the bus (do you see a pattern here?). From laneways lined with stores selling aged leather and coffee shops where I easily could spend hours to the homemade lunch we had with a local family and the royal treasures and ancient murals of the City Palace, Udaipur is magical.

A beautiul sunset over the water of Lake Pichola and the rooftops of Udaipur.

On our second last night as a group, our leader recommended a family-run rooftop restaurant on Lake Pichola’s edge. We got to the restaurant, took the rickety lift to the seventh floor and stepped out to see the prettiest sunset. Flush with reds, oranges, pinks and purples, the sky looked magnificent and was nature’s send-off to an unforgettable two weeks in India.

We drank, laughed and ate way too much spicy food as we all reflected on our favourite parts of the trip. As we exchanged numbers for a WhatsApp group we named Rajasthan Revellers, I knew we were leaving India with countless memories, about 1,278 photos and nine new friends.

We visited more destinations than I’ve shared, but these cities left an India-shaped mark on my heart. Yes, the journey was long at times (those eight-hour bus drives really called out the snorers in the group) and yes, it was too hot to function properly most days, but my god was it worth it.

Rajasthan is possibly the most daunting, astounding and unbelievable destination I’ve ever been to and while it didn’t get any less overwhelming the more we saw, I’d go back in a heartbeat.

India is a country that’s almost a continent. From the sky-high peaks of the Himalayas to the waterlogged jungles of Kerala and the dry-as-a-bone deserts of Gujarat and Rajasthan , this enormous nation covers an astonishing variety of terrain. There’s always somewhere worth visiting no matter what the weather is doing.

The northern hemisphere winter – from December to March – is the optimum time to visit the vibrant cities and historic temples and forts of north India , while the rainy monsoon period from June to September is peak season in the dry mountains of Ladakh .

However, even at the height of the rainy season, there are plenty of good reasons to visit this remarkable nation – not least the festival calendar, which is packed year-round. Here’s our guide to the best times to come to India .

High-angle view of Arambol beach: a white stretch of sand being lapped by waves and backed by palm tress. On the sand a number of people sunbathe and a handful of colorful fishing boats also line the shore.

December to March is best for beach days, tiger safaris and temple trips

The peak season for tourism in India coincides with dry skies and warm but not baking temperatures in the plains – in other words, perfect traveling weather. The balmy, sunny days are ideal for visiting India’s teeming cities, and most of the country is ripe for exploration, though it can be frosty in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Even in the steamy south, humidity hovers at manageable levels and temperatures dip overnight, making it easier to sleep, though this is also the time for peak prices almost everywhere. Another hassle is the morning fog, which can disrupt air travel and other forms of transport in the northern plains.

December to March is also the sweet spot for lowland adventures. National parks are drier, there’s less greenery for wildlife to hide behind, and animals are more active for longer thanks to the lower temperatures. For a good chance of tiger sightings, head to Kanha , Bandhavgarh , and other national parks in the central plains.

In the hills, it’s a slightly different story. While there’s an undeniable magic to seeing Shimla dusted with snow, many hotels shut their doors for the winter, and mountain trails and roads over high passes become obstructed, including the main roads to Ladakh (though some hardy travelers still fly in for winter treks). A handful of hill towns in Kashmir , Himachal Pradesh , and Uttarakhand stay open for skiing and other winter sports.

December is a big time for Hindu marriage ceremonies – look out for  baraat (bridegroom’s processions) featuring a white horse, a nervous groom, and an ear-splitting marching band. Christian communities in Goa and parts of Kerala and the Northeast States hang up decorations in the lead-up to Christmas, and Christmas Day is celebrated with feasting and fireworks.

Close-up of a woman in colourful clothes who is dancing in a crowd during the festival of Holi

In January, all eyes are on Delhi for the pomp and circumstance of Republic Day on January 26 (don’t miss the army and police motorcycle stunt teams). The Hindu festival of Sankranti is celebrated in different ways across India, from special celebrations to honor cows in South India to mass kite-flying in Gujarat. (If you'd like to participate in kite-flying, you can help to avoid causing harm to birds and other wildlife by choosing a kite with a plain cotton – not synthetic – string and by avoiding early morning and evening when the birds are likely to be flying in great numbers.)

If you come in February, head to Jaipur for the cultured Jaipur Literature Festival , or Agra for Taj Mahotsav , a 10-day carnival of culture, cuisine and crafts featuring 400 artisans from all over India (and enough regional food to induce a curry coma). Alternatively, make for the hills and join Buddhist communities embracing Losar, the Tibetan New Year.

Other red-letter days on the calendar include the Hindu festival of Vasant Panchami in January or February, marking the arrival of spring. In February or March, you can attend Goa’s lively carnival; honor Lord Shiva at celebrations across the country for Maha Shivaratri; or join in the joyful mayhem as mountains of rainbow-colored powder are thrown around for the festival of Holi.

June to November is the best time to hit the Himalayas

India’s shoulder season means different things depending on where you go in the country. The plains are drenched by the monsoon rains from June to September, and Goa’s beach resorts become ghost towns, but backpackers and trekkers flood into the mountains, filling Ladakh’s lodges, tented camps, and yoga retreats.

This is the prime time for treks on India’s high-altitude trails, but roads and paths through the foothills turn into torrents, national park trails close, and views disappear behind swirling clouds. That might give an impression of a country besieged by rain, but it doesn’t rain all day every day; there’s still plenty to see and do, with bargain prices for accommodations and tours.

As the rains clear from September, tourism picks up in the plains and the foothills, but Ladakh closes down for the season, and public buses between Leh and Manali stop running. October and November are great times to visit almost everywhere else in India – prices remain below the peak, skies are clear and the trekking season gets underway in the foothills. This is also a great month to visit desert areas such as Rajasthan, which can be surprisingly green.

Traveler with laptop sits a balcony with a view point over the mountain valley

In June or July, Rath Yatra sees effigies of Lord Jagannath – Vishnu as Lord of the Universe – hauled through the streets on vast, colorful chariots, most famously in Puri in Odisha (Orissa). Buddhist festivals fill the gompas of Ladakh – Hemis Tsechu is a glorious spectacle, with costumed dances and the unfurling of a giant thangka (Buddhist painting) at Hemis Gompa .

August is jam-packed with festival action. Kerala’s exhilarating boat races take place on the second Sunday of August and there are patriotic flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades in Delhi on August 15 to celebrate India’s independence. Falling in August or September, Ganesh Chaturthi sees the ritual immersion of thousands of colorful idols of the elephant-headed god in Mumbai .

There’s more action in October and November, as Hindus honor Durga, the fearsome form of the mother goddess, most famously at Navratri and Durga Puja (celebrated enthusiastically in Kolkata and West Bengal). Many areas throw lavish celebrations for Dussehra, celebrating the victory of Hindu god Rama over demon-king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil (festivities are particularly colorful in Kullu and Mysuru ).

This is also the season for Diwali (Deepavali) , which brings fireworks and twinkling lights to towns and villages across India, and the Camel Fair in Pushkar , which attracts 200,000 people and 50,000 camels, horses, and cattle. Sikhs celebrate Nanak Jayanti – the birthday of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism – with prayers, kirtan (devotional singing), and processions, especially in Punjab and Haryana .

The Shivalik Deluxe Express train from Kalka to Shimla rounds a corner its journey. The train line is very scenic, hugging the side of a mountain and surrounded by forest.

April to June is the best time to avoid crowds

India’s low season sees temperatures soaring to almost unbearable levels. By May, the lowlands feel like an oven, and locals wait eagerly for the cooling effect of the monsoon. Cities can be uncomfortably hot – sensible travelers head to the hill stations or stay close to the water on the coast. The Northeast is wet, but it’s peak season for visiting Sikkim and highland areas of West Bengal , including Darjeeling .

If you can handle the heat, tourists are thinner on the ground, making visits to popular sights such as Delhi’s Red Fort less hectic, and this is a great time for treks in the cooler foothills of the Himalayas. Accommodation prices are also low, though many beachside hotels in Goa close completely from May to September. If you happen to be in Maharashtra , you’re in for a treat as tasty Alphonso mangoes come into season.

Rain doesn’t halt the festival calendar. Mahavir Jayanti commemorates the birth of Jainism’s 24th and most important tirthankar (teacher and enlightened being), while Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi (the solar new year) in the middle of April. Rama Navami is another big date as Hindus celebrate Rama's birth with processions and enactments of scenes from the Ramayana (one of Hinduism’s most sacred texts).

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan runs from approximately March 10 to April 9 in 2024. Some Muslim-owned businesses close during the day, and people fast from sunrise to sunset. The breaking of the fast at Eid al-Fitr is marked by feasting, and Muslim women adorn their arms with mehndi (henna designs). The birthday of Buddha (Buddha Jayanti) is celebrated with gusto in Bodhgaya and Tibetan Buddhist areas.

Understanding India’s festival calendar

While secular festivals in India follow the Gregorian calendar, most religious festivals follow lunar calendars, so the dates change every year. Muslim celebrations move forward by 11 days every year relative to the Gregorian calendar, and Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain festivals can fall in different months from year to year. Always check the dates of festivals before planning a trip – the Indian government has a calendar of the year's gazetted government holidays .

More than 50M Americans are traveling this weekend: The best, worst times to drive

rajasthan tourism best time

If you’re planning to take a trip for the Fourth of July weekend, get ready for busy airports and roads.

AAA projects 50.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or farther from home over the holiday weekend, marking a record high for the holiday, the membership organization said Monday. The previous record was 49 million travelers in 2019.

Domestic travel will rise by 2.1 million people compared with 2022 numbers, according to AAA.

“We’ve never projected travel numbers this high for Independence Day weekend,” AAA Senior Vice President of Travel Paula Twidale said in a news release . “What this tells us is that despite inventory being limited and some prices 50% higher, consumers are not cutting back on travel this summer. Many of them heeded our advice and booked early, another sign of strong travel demand.”

AAA’s forecast defines the holiday travel period as June 30 to July 4.

What can travelers expect during July 4 weekend?

Fourth of July weekend is expected to see record numbers of road trippers and air travelers alike. AAA projects that 43.2 million people will drive, up more than 2% from 2022, when gas prices were higher. That number is also 4% higher than 2019.

The organization expects 4.17 million travelers to fly, up more than 11% from 2022 and higher than the previous record of 3.91 million in 2019. “The share of air travelers in the overall holiday forecast this year is an impressive 8.2% – the highest percentage in nearly 20 years,” AAA said in the release.

Some will take other kinds of trips. A predicted 3.36 million people will travel by bus, train or cruise during the holiday weekend, AAA said. That number is 24% higher than in 2022.

What are the best times to drive on July 4 weekend?

INRIX, which works with AAA on holiday travel projections, said roads are likely to be busiest on Friday, with average travel times almost 30% higher than usual. The transportation data and insights provider predicts drivers in major metropolitan areas like Washington, D.C., Boston and Seattle will face the worst traffic.

“With record-breaking travelers expected on the road this holiday weekend, drivers should prepare for above-average delays to their favorite destinations,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in the release.

Sunday and Monday are expected to see minimal traffic, however.

➤ These are the best times to drive on the other days:

  • Thursday, June 29: Before noon.
  • Friday, June 30: Before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 1: Before noon.
  • Tuesday, July 4: Before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 5: Before 2 p.m.

➤ These are the worst times to drive:

  • Thursday, June 29: Between 4 and 6 p.m.
  • Friday, June 30: Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 1: 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 4: Between noon and 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 5: Between 3 and 6 p.m.

“Using traffic apps, local DOT notifications, and 511 services are key to minimizing holiday travel traffic frustrations this Independence Day,” Pishue said.
