Safari 17: Everything you need to know about the new macOS features

Apple’s built-in browser might be the most frequently used app on your Mac (yes, even more than the Finder, super Mac geeks). So Apple always adds helpful new features to Safari, its browser. In version 17, available with macOS Sonoma or as a separate download for macOS Ventura and Monterey, Safari helps you be more productive and secure, and it’s available for macOS Monterey, Ventura, and the upcoming Sonoma. Let’s take a look at the new features.

Safari for Mac has finally caught up with iOS and iPadOS, which have had this feature for a while. A web app is basically a website saved as a self-contained app that appears in the Dock. Just click on its icon to launch it. We have a separate guide to web apps in macOS Sonoma that details how to make and manage them.

With a profile, you can set up separate browsing sessions based on topics. For example, you can set up a Work profile for all the sites that you use for your job, and you can then set up a separate Personal profile for when you’re using the web on your own time. You can get more specific with your profiles if you want, like say, a profile for making travel plans, or another for your hobby. We have a separate guide to profiles in Safari with instructions on how to set them up.

Private Browsing enhancements

When you open a private window ( File > New Private Window , or Shift+Command+N), it opens a browser window that does not save the details of your session (such as the history), nor does it share the session with your other Apple devices. This has long been a part of Safari’s Private Browsing, but Apple has made a few more enhancements in version 17.

When a Private Window has been inactive for some time, it becomes locked and requires a user password to reopen.

Locked Private Browsing : When a private window isn’t being used (you step away from your Mac, for example), the window locks, and its contents are hidden. To open the window, the password of the active user account must be entered.
Link tracking protection. Websites often use trackers in links, but now when you use Private Browsing (as well as links shared in Messages and Mail), the trackers are removed.
Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection. Prevents known trackers from loading on pages and from identifying your device. This setting can be adjusted in Safari > Settings > Advanced , then check the box for “Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection.” You can always set it to work always or just when using Private Browsing.
Extensions are turned off by default . Browser extensions can be turned on by going to Safari > Settings > Extensions and selecting the extension in the left column. Then in the main section, look for a setting checkbox for Allow in Private Browsing and check the box.

Multitab selection

Multiple tabs can be selected by holding down the Shift key and clicking on each tab. Once you have your tabs selected, Control+click, and a pop-up will appear with options on what you can do.

After selecting tabs, you can open them in a new window, create a Tab Group, and do other tasks.

Favorites bar favicons

Before version 17, the Favorites bar showed links with just text labels. Now, a favicon is included so you can quickly spot the link.

Apple's mobile browser is packed with features. They make it easier to track and read online content, protect your privacy, and keep things organized. Here's a list of the best features that all iPhone owners need to know about.

Apple launched the iCloud Private Relay beta in 2021, as a way of anonymizing web traffic in the Safari browser. You can use iCloud Private Relay if you pay for any tier of iCloud (known as an iCloud+ subscription ) or use Apple One .

Private Relay isn't a VPN, and you can't use both a VPN and iCloud Private Relay at the same time. The service works by sending web requests over two hops: the first (operated by Apple) can see your IP address but encrypts your request and DNS records, while the second (operated by a third party) assigns a random IP address and decrypts your web request.

The idea is that neither Apple nor the third party can connect the dots and know who is visiting a specific website. The service has had its hiccups with unclear error messages , unscheduled downtime , and some carriers taking a dislike to the service . But it works as advertised most of the time, so it's worth turning on if you're concerned about privacy.

Enable iCloud Private Relay (or turn it off) by launching the Settings app and tapping on your name at the top of the screen. From here navigate to iCloud > iCloud Private Relay and enable the service.

Safari gained the ability to use extensions with the arrival of iOS 15. This allows you to vastly expand the capabilities of Apple's browser with third-party add-ons, though you'll need to go through Apple's channels to do so.

You'll find Safari extensions in the App Store. Launch the App Store app then tap on "Apps" at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the "Safari Extensions" category under Top Categories (tap "See All" if it's not visible). From here you can install extensions just as you would any other app.

Many apps are bundled with Safari extensions (just like Apple Watch apps and Home screen widgets ). You can enable or disable these under Settings > Safari > Extensions. This includes content blockers (for blocking online advertisements and trackers) plus regular extensions that expand on the browser's core functionality.

We've put together a list of our favorite Safari for iPhone and iPad extensions , which allow you to do things like enable picture-in-picture video anywhere, disable Google AMP webpages , and bring dark mode to websites that don't explicitly support it.

Safari has a few privacy settings that you may have already enabled, but it's worth checking they're on if you're concerned about online privacy. Head to Settings > Safari and scroll down to the "Privacy & Security" section.

You can enable "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" to block advertisers and their cookies from tracking you across the web. This, in theory, prevents advertisers from building up a profile of you based on the websites you visit. Safari was the first mainstream browser to block third-party cookies by default.

You can also enable " Hide IP Address " if you're using iCloud Private Relay to prevent both trackers and websites from seeing this information. This feature attempts to foil advertisers' attempts to profile you based on your IP.

You can also disable "Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement" (which is on by default) to further limit tracking. While the feature may sound like something you should leave on, it's a way of sharing information with advertisers about your interactions in a "private" way.

You can enable Reader mode on most websites by tapping and holding the "AA" button to the left of a website URL in Safari's Address bar. You can also tap this button and then choose "Show Reader" if you'd rather do it in two taps. When you do this, Safari will strip out everything except the content on the webpage and present it to you in a customizable format.

This is great for several reasons. To start with, it eliminates irritating advertisements (including ones that refresh while you're trying to read, shifting the content up and down the page). It also strips out formatting or website styles that may make it harder to read, like odd font choices and distracting colors.

You can customize Reader by tapping on the "AA" icon in the URL bar and choosing a font, background color, and text size using the small and large "A" buttons. To exit Reader, choose "Hide Reader" from this menu or long-press the "AA" button again. By choosing a dark background you can read websites in the dark without being blinded, a must-have for late-night long reads in bed.

It's an accessibility feature as much as it is a convenience, and Safari will remember your Reader settings until the next time you use it.

If you tap on the "AA" button in the website URL bar (while visiting a website) you will see a "Website Settings" option. Tap on it and you can force Reader every time using the "Use Reader Automatically" or always request the desktop version of a website using the "Request Desktop Website" toggle.

These are useful if you always find yourself using Reader (to get around annoying adverts) or avoiding a particular mobile website due to its limited functionality. Reader should only kick in on pages that make sense, so for example a website's home page which has no content beyond headlines should function as normal while tapping through to an article will trigger Reader mode for you.

You can also preempt any Camera, Microphone, and Location access prompts by always allowing or outright denying a particular website access to these permissions. Safari will remember your settings for each website. To make changes to these settings, head to Settings > Safari and scroll down to the "Settings for Websites" section.

Sometimes you might visit a website or be sent a link to an interesting article that you simply don't have time to read right now. It might even be a product website you want to explore, or a video hosted somewhere online. This is where Reading List comes in, allowing you to save websites for later.

You can access the "Add to Reading List" option via the long-press menus that pop up when you hold your finger down on a link. This could be in Safari on a webpage, in a Messages window, and via the Share sheet in apps like Twitter. You can also use the Share button in Safari to access this option while the web page is open.

You'll find all of these links accessible within Safari by tapping on the "Bookmarks" button in the bar at the bottom of the screen, then tapping on the Reading List tab (it looks like a pair of glasses). If you have a Mac or an iPad, your Reading List will sync between devices.

Keeping tabs organized can be a real drag if you aren't using Safari's grouping features. This allows you to create labeled groups for tabs so you can recall and dismiss browsing sessions on demand.

To set up your groups, launch Safari then tap on the tab view button in the bottom-right corner of the screen to display all of your tabs. From here, tap on the label at the bottom of the screen, it will say something like "10 Tabs" (depending on how many you have open).

Now you can create a new empty tab group, or create a new tab group with all open tabs. Your main browsing session can be found at the top of this list, just above the "Private" label. Add a tab to a group by long-pressing the tab view button in the bottom-right corner of Safari. You can also move tabs en-masse to a new or existing tab group .

Private browsing has many uses, the most obvious being not leaving a trail of websites you've visited in your history, cookies, or website data. But the feature is also useful for starting new sessions with websites that may have profiled you, like when you're limited to five free articles on a news website and you've reached your limit.

You can access a private browsing session under the tab view button in the bottom-right corner of Safari. You can also quickly switch to and from your "Private" session by long-pressing this button. From your home screen, tap and hold Safari then choose "New Private Tab" to jump straight to a new tab in your "Private" session.

Do you use any websites like a web app? Some services, like Xbox Cloud Gaming, must be launched in a browser window and Safari's "Add to Home" option provides the most elegant method of doing so. Many websites function as if they were standalone apps, occupying a slot in the iPhone multitasker and lacking Safari's UI.

Others operate as simple bookmarks you can launch from your home screen , which might not be to everyone's taste but can be handy nonetheless.

You can speed up your checkout process by configuring your AutoFill settings under Settings > Safari > AutoFill. Here you can nominate your personal Contact entry in your address book to pull in information like your address and other contact details, making it easier to complete purchases.

It might come as quite a surprise to learn that Apple's Safari browser is more than 20 years old. It first made an appearance as the default browser on Mac back in January 2003 and it was intended to be a faster browser for the Mac than the other popular browsers at the time, like Internet Explorer and Netscape. In the two decades that followed, Safari has seen some big changes. It was one of the first apps to appear on the original iPhone, and then made its way to the iPad too when the first model appeared in 2010.

Today, Safari is still an excellent browser for Mac, iPhone , and iPad, and there are a lot of features that you may be totally unaware of. Here are some of the best Safari tips and tricks you should take advantage of.

Safari tips and tricks on Mac

Thanks to the power of iCloud , you can sync your browsing across all your Apple devices, from your iPhone to your Mac. If you set up tab groups on your iPhone or iPad, you can see those same groups on your Mac, and vice versa. However, each version of the browser has its own unique tricks, many of which are definitely worth knowing.

Turn any website into an app

A new feature in the latest version of Safari, is that it's now possible to take any website and turn it into an app that will appear in your dock. A Safari web app is a little different from a standard page in Safari, as it doesn't store any history, cookies, or other website data. It's also more streamlined, with just three buttons: back, forward, and share. If there's a streaming site you use that doesn't have its own app, for example, you can make one with just a few clicks.

Open the website that you want turn into a web app.
Click the Share icon in the top-right of the Safari window.
Select Add to Dock .
The web page is now turned into a web app that will appear in the dock of your Mac.

Use profiles to keep your browsing separated

Another new feature in the latest version of Safari is the ability to create different profiles. These profiles allow you to save completely different sets of Safari preferences. Your browsing history, bookmarks, cookies, and website data will only be saved within your profile so sites you visit in your Work profile for example, won't appear in the history for your Personal profile.

Open Safari .
Click the Safari menu in the menu bar.
Select Settings .
Click the Profiles tab.

You can add more at any time by clicking the + (plus) button in the Profiles tab.

Create tab groups to make tabs easier to find

If you don't want to use profiles, you can use tab groups to keep your browsing more organised. Tab groups allow you to group collections of tabs together. When you open the group, you'll just see the tabs saved within that group. You can create as many different tab groups as you wish, and they will sync across your Apple devices.

Open Safari and click the Show Sidebar icon at the top-left of the screen.
Click the New Tab Group icon in the top-right corner of the sidebar.
To create a new empty tab group, select New Empty Tab Group .
To add the currently open tabs to a new group, select New Tab Group with X Tabs .
You can add further tabs to tab groups by dragging them into the appropriate group in the sidebar.

Use picture-in-picture for better multitasking

If you're watching a video on a website, you might want to be able to keep browsing as you do so. Using the picture-in-picture feature in Safari allows you to break out the video from the webpage, so that you can keep watching it and carry on browsing, even in other tabs or apps.

Open a webpage with a video you want to watch and start the video playing.
Right-click the Speaker icon at the right-hand end of the URL bar.
Select Open Picture in Picture .
The video will pop out in a separate window.
You can now carry on browsing, with the video still visible.

Quickly get back to search results using SnapBack

Have you ever fallen down a browsing rabbit hole? You do a web search, click one of the results, find an interesting link on that page and click it. Then you find an even more interesting link on that page. Before you know it, you're ten pages from where you first started.

Now you want to get back to your original search results. That's going to involve a lot of clicking the back button, right? Well, not if you use the clever SnapBack feature. It will take you right back to those search results, skipping all the pages in between.

Do a web search in Safari.
Follow some links within the same tab.
Click the History menu.
Select Search Results SnapBack .
You'll be taken back to the original page of search results.

Quickly close multiple tabs

If you find that you've got too many tabs open, you may not like the thought of having to close each one manually. The good news is that you don't have to. You can quickly close multiple tabs in Safari in just a couple of clicks.

Right-click a tab that you want to keep open.
To close every other tab except the current one, select Close Other Tabs .
To close all the tabs to the right of the current one, select Close Tabs to the Right .

Safari tips and tricks on iPad

Safari on the iPad also has some tricks of its own, some of which won't work on Mac or iPhone. Most of the tricks from the section below on iPhone tips and tricks will also work on iPad, however.

Use tabs in Split View

Split View is a useful iPad feature for working with multiple apps at once. It works by splitting the screen into two sections, with a different app running in each. However, it's also possible to use Split View for two different Safari tabs.

Open the first page you want to use in Split View.
Tap the Three Dots at the very top of the screen.
Tap the Split View icon.
Tap the Safari icon to open another Safari window.
You can now navigate to the other web page you want to see in this new window.
You can drag the central divider in either direction if you need one of the windows to be larger than the other.
To return to the standard view, tap the Three Dots icon at the top of one of the windows and select the Full Screen icon.

Merge Safari windows back into tabs

If you've been working with multiple separate windows of Safari, rather than using tabs within the same window, it's possible to quickly merge all of your open Safari windows back into tabs.

Tap and hold the Tab Overview icon in the top-right of one of your Safari windows.
Select Merge All Windows .
All open Safari windows will be collected together as tabs within a single window.

Bookmark multiple tabs at once

If you've got multiple tabs open, and you want to save all of them so that you can access them later, you might go through each one in turn and save it as a bookmark. However, there's a much quicker way which allows you to bookmark all of your currently open tabs.

Open the tabs that you want to bookmark.
Tap and hold the Bookmarks icon.
To add a single bookmark, select Add Bookmark .
To bookmark all of the currently open tabs, select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs .

Sort your tabs by title or website

The extra real estate on the iPad allows you to view a lot of tabs at once. However, finding the right tab can still be tricky if you have a lot of them open. It's possible to sort your tabs by title or by website to make it easier to find the one you want.

Tap the Tab Overview icon in the top-right of the window.
When the tabs appear, tap and hold one of them.
Tap Arrange Tabs By .
Select Arrange Tabs By Title or Arrange Tabs By Website .

Tap and hold the Tab Overview icon in the bottom-right of the screen.
Select Close All X Tabs .
All of your open tabs will close.

Set your tabs to close automatically

If even this seems like too much effort, you can get Safari to automatically close your tabs for you. You can have this happen every day, every week, or every month.

Open the Settings app.
Scroll down and select Safari .
Under the Tabs section, tap Close Tabs .
Select After One Day , After One Week , or After One Month to have Safari automatically close your tabs for you.
If you don't want Safari to close your tabs, select Manually instead.

Open a new tab with a gesture

Why do two taps when a single gesture will do the job? If you want to open a new Safari tab, you can tap the Tab Overview icon and then tap the + (plus) icon to make a new tab appear. If you're a true Safari legend, however, then instead, you'll just swipe left on the URL bar of the current tab, and a new one will open like magic. Swiping right will take you to your previous tabs , too.

iOS 15 Safari Guide: Tabs, Extensions, Search Bar, and Other Changes

Apple's Safari app has undergone a number of changes during the iOS 15 beta testing process. Apple started out with a radical new design that moved the address bar from the top of the app's interface and introduced a floating tab bar, but after a multitude of complaints, there were several redesigns that culminated in an option to undo the iOS 15 design entirely.

Design Changes

Safari started out with a new floating tab design that moved the address bar and tabs to the bottom of the iPhone interface, but now the design change is optional.

You can get to webpage settings by tapping on the Aa, or reload a page by tapping on the reload button. With this Tab Bar interface, when you scroll through a webpage, the entire Tab Bar collapses down so you can see more of the website. You can bring it back up with a tap.

If you choose "Single Tab" instead of "Tab Bar," the address bar and tabs will remain at the top of the Safari window, which is how iOS 14 works. The design of the Single Tab option is unchanged from iOS 14, with the same control bar available at the bottom of the interface. You can't swipe through tabs using the Single Tab interface and will instead need to use the Tab Switcher.

You can swap between the bottom Tab Bar and the Single Tab interface by tapping on the "Aa" button that's next to any URL.

How to Move iOS 15 Safari's Address Search Bar Back to Top

Website Tinting

Available in the Settings app, Allow Website Tinting matches the collapsed Safari address bar interface to the website's colors to make it blend in better with the background.

With the new Landscape Tab Bar setting, when you use your ‌iPhone‌ in landscape mode with Safari, you'll see a Mac-style tab bar that shows all of your open tabs, and you can swipe through them.

A downward swipe on any webpage in iOS 15 will refresh the page, and this is an alternative to having to tap on the reload icon.

Tabs in iOS 15 can be saved into Tab Groups, which offers a way to preserve a set of tabs you have open without having to have those tabs active.

To make a Tab Group, just open up all of the websites that you want to include, tap on the Tabs button with the down arrow, and then tap New Tab Group from [#] Tabs. You can also use this option to create a New Empty Tab Group that tabs can be added to later. Long press on any open tab (or the main address bar if you have the single tab view enabled) to add it to a Tab Group.

To load up a Tab Group, tap on the Tabs button and then tap on the name of the group in the list. All of your Tab Groups sync across your devices so you can access them on iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 15 as well as on Macs running macOS Monterey.

In iOS 14, all of your open tabs are displayed in a card-like interface that you can swipe through, but in iOS 15, open tabs are displayed in a grid view.

Customizable Start Page

Safari is more customizable in iOS 15, and you can edit what's available on your start page. This is a feature that has been available on macOS, but is now also available on iOS devices.

You can choose to have the start page show Favorites, Frequently Visited sites, Shared With You content, Privacy Report info, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, and iCloud Tabs.

There's an option to use the same Start Page appearance across all devices, and a toggle to upload the background image of your choice.

With this system, Apple knows your IP address and the third-party partner knows the site you're visiting, and because the information is de-linked, neither Apple nor the partner company has a complete picture of the site you're visiting and your location, and neither does the website you're browsing. Normally websites have access to this data and combined with cookies, can use it to build a profile of your preferences.

One of the new features of macOS Sonoma is Safari web apps. This feature allows you to save a webpage as a web app. This lets you access the webpage just like an app, with an app icon in the Dock.

First, open Safari and navigate to the webpage you want to turn into a web app.
Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen and select File , then Add to Dock .

In the popup window, choose a name for your web app, then click Add .

Your new web app will appear in the Dock.

It is also saved to your Applications folder, so you can access it using any of the following:

Go to [username] > Applications in Finder and double-click on the web app. Or, if you don’t see your username in the Finder sidebar, go to the top menu bar and select Go > Home . If you want your username to show up in the sidebar, go to the top menu bar and select Finder > Settings , select the Sidebar tab at the top of the window, then check the box next to your username.
Open Launchpad and click on the web app.
Open Spotlight ( Command -Space bar) and type the name of your web app.

How to use Safari web apps

To use the Safari web app, you will just need to click on the icon, and the webpage will open. You’ll notice that the web app looks different than a regular Safari window; at the top of the window, there is no search field, sidebar button or tabs buttons. You can customize the web app by changing some settings.

With the web app open, go to the top menu bar and click on the app name, then select Settings .

Under the General tab, you can:

Change the application name or URL.
Change the image used for the app icon. Just click the icon and choose an image from your files.
Change how the web app looks. If you want to hide the navigation controls (back and forward buttons, the Share button), uncheck the box next to Show navigation controls . If you want to prevent the title bar from using the webpage colors, uncheck the box next to Show color in title bar .

Under the Privacy tab, you can:

Click the Clear Website Data button to clear the website data (cookies and cache).
Modify the privacy and security settings for the website by clicking Privacy & Security . You can change permissions for the website to access your microphone, camera, location and screen sharing.

How to delete a web app

You will delete the web app the same way you would delete any other application.

Open Finder and select your user name from the left sidebar.
Find and click on the Applications folder.
Now, right-click ( Control -click) on the web app name and select Move to Trash from the menu that appears.

iOS 18 Safari — biggest new features for your iPhone

Safari, Apple's built-in web browser across its different devices, won't get a radical overhaul as part of iOS 18 . But even just two big changes to the iPhone's default browser hint at Apple's larger strategy of leaning into machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Both major additions to Safari in iOS 18 promise to skim web pages and pull out the details you need. The idea, explains Beth Dakin, Apple's senior manager of Safari software engineering, in Apple's WWDC 2024 video is to offer "easier ways to discover content and streamline your browsing."

Even better, while the new Safari features do turn to machine learning, they're not part of the Apple Intelligence capabilities being introduced across Apple devices later this year. That means Safari's improvements will be available on more phones than just the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max , plus whatever iPhone 16 models come out later this fall.

With that in mind, here's what to expect from iOS 18 Safari once you upgrade to the new iPhone software, whether that's when the full version comes out later this year or Apple makes the iOS 18 public beta available in July.

iOS 18 Safari: Highlights

Think of Highlights, the biggest of the two improvements to iOS 18 Safari, as a kind of hyper-focused summary tool. Instead of merely summarizing what's on the page, though, Highlights uses machine intelligence to identify the key bits on information on a particular page and calls them out in a pop-up window as you browse.

An example Apple uses throughout its iOS 18 preview shows a web page for a hotel where Highlights has called up a window showing the hotel's location on a map, plus quick links for driving directions or placing a call to the hotel. Other examples of Highlights include Wikipedia summaries of a person, playback links for songs, or summarized reviews for a movie or TV show.

It's unclear from Apple's demo whether Highlights appear automatically in Safari, or if you need to tap a button to get the Highlights window to pop-up. Footnotes on Apple's iOS 18 summary page indicate that the feature will only work with U.S. English sites, at least initially.

iOS 18 Safari: Reader

The Reader tool in iOS 18 Safari also picks up some summarization skills, giving you the opportunity to read a quick overview of a web page when you switch to Reader mode. Reader takes things a step further by generating a table of contents for a web article that lets you see how a page is organized. Presumably, you'll also be able to jump to specific sections of the article.

Galaxy AI tools on board the best Samsung phones add summarization features, so it's good to see them get baked into iOS 18 as well. A concise summary of a web page that you've stumbled upon can give you a better idea of what an article is about, while a table of contents can help you more easily drill down to the parts of a topic that interest you.

The summarization tools in Reader appear to be limited to English in the initial iOS 18 release, though regional support is far more extensive. Besides the U.S., Apple promises availability in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K.

Other Safari changes beyond the iPhone

Safari is available across Apple's different platforms, and there are some improvements coming to the web browser that are available for Safari on other devices. Specifically, Mac users who upgrade to macOS Sequoia will get a new way of watching web-based videos with a new Video Viewer that automatically detects when there's video on a page. Video Viewer breaks that out into a separate window with its own playback controls; click away, and the viewer becomes a separate picture-in-picture window.

Along with the Highlights and Reader additions, Safari on macOS Sequoia also promises performance improvements. In fact, Apple says the updated Mac version will be the world's fastest browser, with up to four hours more battery life than Google's Chrome browser on streaming video.

iOS 18 Safari outlook

Safari's seen more substantial changes in previous iOS updates, but that's not to dismiss the importance of what Apple's doing in iOS 18. With both Highlights and Reader leaning heavily on machine learning to power their new summary tools, iOS 18 Safari offers a taste of what Apple hopes to deliver throughout the iPhone, only without the stringent system requirements that the Apple Intelligence features demand.

If you're looking for a quick way to free up System Data or Other storage, consider backing up and erasing your iPhone to start afresh.

The "System Data" or "Other" category in your iPhone's storage includes caches, settings, messages, voice memos, and miscellaneous data. The good news is that you can clear out much of this unused data to reclaim valuable space on your iPhone.

1. Clear Your Safari Cache

Safari caches are one of the biggest culprits for System Data storage growing out of hand. Like any other browser, Safari saves browsing history and website data on your iPhone to load websites quickly. However, Safari's caches are not a necessity, and if they are filling up your iPhone storage, you may need to clear them to make space for more important items.

To clear your Safari cache on your iPhone:

Open the Settings app and head to General > iPhone Storage .
Scroll through the app list to find and tap Safari .
Tap Website Data .
Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Remove All Website Data . Then, hit Remove Now to confirm.

2. Cut Down on Streaming if You Can

Streaming a lot of music and video can also cause your iPhone's System Data storage to get out of hand. To clarify, this is different from downloading.

When you download video or audio from the iTunes Store, TV app, or Music app, it is categorized as Media. Streams, on the other hand, use caches to ensure seamless playback, and these are classified as System Data.

So, while you try to free up some space on your iPhone or iPad , it's better to reduce or pause streaming content and rely on downloads instead. You can also try to clear app caches from your iPhone storage.

Focus on specific media apps that you use to stream online content, such as YouTube, Apple Music, Netflix, or Podcasts. Then, clear the data for these apps in your storage settings.

3. Delete Old iMessage and Mail Data

If you're a heavy texter, the Messages app might be consuming a lot of your storage. In that case, it's best to configure your iPhone to save fewer older messages.

By default, the Messages app stores conversations forever, but you can change this setting to 1 year or even 30 days to minimize the amount of data it caches. To do so, use these steps:

Open the Settings app and scroll down to tap Messages .
Under the Message History section, tap Keep Messages .
Select your preferred message storage duration: 30 Days or 1 Year .
Choose Delete to remove messages older than the specified period.

Similarly, the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad saves a cache of all the documents, photos, and videos you've viewed. While this speeds up reloading them the next time, these caches can quickly accumulate and consume storage space. To clear out obsolete Mail caches, log out of your email account and sign in again.

4. Delete and Reinstall Some Apps

Most app data is classified as Apps, but certain caches or data are classified as System Data. For example, if the Podcasts app takes up more than a couple of gigabytes of space, it's likely filled with cached data.

Deleting and re-downloading the app could help clear the System Data storage on your iPhone. To remove an app from your iPhone , long-press the app on the home screen and tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete . Afterward, head to the App Store to download and reinstall the app.

Alternatively, you can offload unused apps and reinstall them later when needed. Offloading is different from removing the app entirely, as it only removes the app while keeping its data. If your iPhone is running iOS 16 or higher, you can even configure it to offload unused apps automatically.

5. Back Up and Erase Your iPhone

The easiest way to remove excess data is to completely wipe your device and start over. This method is faster than trying to locate and delete app caches individually, and it can also eliminate any bugs that might be contributing to the storage problem.

Before you do that, make sure you back up your iPhone or iPad . Otherwise, you will lose all the data on your device.

To erase and reset your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and then tap Erase All Content and Settings . If you have an iCloud backup, iOS will prompt you to restore it to avoid losing unsaved data.

The above tips should help you reduce the amount of storage occupied by System Data or Other on your iPhone. While you're at it, you can also try deleting unwanted apps, media, and large files to create free space on your iPhone.

Apple’s App Store Rules Illegally Stifle Competition In Europe—Possibly Drawing Billions In Fines, EU Regulator Says

Apple’s App Store rules illegally stifle competition, the European Commission said on Monday, escalating a years-long spat between the U.S. giant and the powerful trading bloc after the company vowed to withhold its anticipated Apple Intelligence AI products over concerns antitrust regulation would force compromises on privacy and security features .

The European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm and also its tech and competition watchdog, said Apple’s App Store policies appear to breach the bloc’s Digital Markets Act rules designed to foster competition in the tech sector and protect smaller companies from big platforms.

The preliminary findings follow an investigation the bloc launched in March, and claim the App Store rules don’t allow developers to to freely direct customers to alternative payment methods or content outside of Apple’s ecosystem.

The Commission also said the fees Apple charges developers for helping them acquire new customers “go beyond what is strictly necessary for such remuneration.”

The findings have been sent to Apple, and the company has a year to defend itself before a final ruling is issued by March 25, 2025, the Commission said.

“The developers’ community and consumers are eager to offer alternatives to the App Store,” said EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager in a statement, adding that the bloc will work “to ensure Apple does not undermine these efforts.”

Apple, which in January announced changes to the App Store to comply with the DMA and allowed developers to point customers to payment options outside the Apple ecosystem, told Forbes it is “confident our plan complies with the law, and (we) estimate more than 99% of developers would pay the same or less in fees to Apple under the new business terms we created.”

Key Background

The EU claims Apple’s policies prevent developers from engaging directly with users to communicate or promote deals directly. Vestager said this ability, known as steering, “is key to ensure that app developers are less dependent on gatekeepers’ app stores and for consumers to be aware of better offers” and regulators argue anti-steering efforts hinder the ability of smaller companies to compete inside large platforms like the App Store. The bloc’s preliminary finding adds to Apple’s mounting antitrust woes around the world. The tech giant’s digital store is also facing scrutiny in Japan , the U.K. and notably the U.S., where it is engaged in a protracted legal battle with Fortnite maker Epic Games. The U.S. has also sued the company for allegedly maintaining an illegal monopoly over the smartphone market. In June, Apple said it would withhold its latest AI updates from EU devices due to issues with DMA compliance, upping tensions with regulators who could find themselves under pressure from users. The company did not explain how the features, which include a partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI and screen sharing, would breach the bloc’s rules and it is not immediately obvious from the outside where the apparent conflicts may arise.

What To Watch For

While the EU has opened DMA probes into the likes of Meta, X and TikTok for possible violations, Monday’s notice marks the first time Brussels has found a company to have breached the landmark tech law. Breaches carry hefty financial penalties and if found guilty in the final ruling, Apple will face a fine of up to 10% of its annual global revenue and fines can rise as high as 20% for repeat offenses. Under different rules, the EU in March fined Apple more than €1.8 billion (or around $1.9 billion) for “abusing its dominant position on the market for the distribution of music streaming apps to iPhone and iPad users through its App Store.”

$383 billion. That’s how much Apple reported in revenue last year. A fine of 10%, the maximum allowed under the DMA for a first time infringement, would be $38.3 billion.

In addition to serving notice on its preliminary findings, the European Commission said it is also opening another investigation into Apple’s compliance with the DMA. The Commission said it is concerned Apple’s contract terms for developers — which include charges of 50 cents per download if the app is used by more than 1 million people — are potentially excessive and unnecessary.

“Apple’s new slogan should be ‘act different’,” said Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market. “We have reason to believe that the AppStore rules not allowing app developers to communicate freely with their own users is in breach of the DMA,” he said, adding that the bloc is “determined” to use the powerful tools it has under the regulations “to finally open real opportunities for innovators and for consumers.”

Woman mauled by wolves while jogging through animal sanctuary near Paris

A woman was hospitalized after being mauled by wolves while jogging through an animal enclosure at a zoo near Paris over the weekend.

The attack occurred at a zoo and safari park in Thoiry, located roughly 31 miles west of Paris.

The 37-year-old woman, who was staying at the zoo’s tourist accommodations, Agence France-Presse reported, was jogging Sunday morning in an area of the zoo that is normally restricted to vehicles and where animals roam freely when she was attacked by a trio of wolves .

The woman reportedly sustained injuries “in the neck, calf and back,” Maryvonne Caillibotte, public prosecutor in Versailles, told AFP.

When asked how the woman had managed to enter the animal enclosure, Caillibotte declined to specify whether the woman made a mistake or the animal enclosure was not marked well enough, AFP reported.

The woman was rescued after zoo staffers heard her cries for help. She was then taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The Wow Safari Thoiry, established in 1968, is home to 1,500 animals kept on roughly 370 acres of land outside of Paris. According to the zoo’s website , stays offer the chance to “relax and live a unique experience in complete privacy with the Arctic wolves that you can observe night and day from your living room.”

Customize your Safari settings on iPhone

Customize your start page

When you open a new tab, you begin on your start page. You can customize your start page with new background images and options.

The start page in Safari, which shows favorite websites, websites saved to the Reading List, and websites open on your other Apple device. At the bottom of the screen is the Edit button.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, then tap Edit.

Choose the options you want to appear on your start page:

Favorites: Display shortcuts to your favorite bookmarked websites. See Bookmark a favorite website .

Frequently Visited: Go straight to the websites you visit most.

Shared with You: See links shared with you in Messages, Mail, and more. See Find links shared with you .

Privacy Report: Stay updated on how many trackers and websites Safari blocked from tracking you. See View the Privacy Report .

Siri Suggestions: As you search, allow websites shared in Calendar and other apps to appear.

Reading List: Show webpages currently in your Reading List. See Add the current webpage to your Reading List .

Recently Closed Tabs: Go back to tabs you previously closed.

iCloud Tabs: Show open tabs from other Apple devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID and Safari is turned on in iCloud settings or preferences. See Organize your tabs with Tab Groups .

Note: Your custom start page settings are updated on all your Apple devices where you have Use Start Page on All Devices turned on, and you’re signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication .

Change the text size for a website on Safari

Use the Page Settings button to increase or decrease the text size.

Tap the large A to increase the font size or the small A to decrease it.

Change the display controls for a website on Safari

You can hide the search field, switch to Reader, and more.

Hide the search field: Tap Hide Toolbar (tap the bottom of the screen to get it back).

See a streamlined view of the webpage: Tap Show Reader (if available).

To return to the normal view, tap Hide Reader.

See what the webpage looks like on a desktop computer: Tap Request Desktop Website (if available).

You can also adjust Safari settings in Accessibility settings. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings. Tap Add App, choose Safari, then tap Safari to adjust the settings.

Choose where to save downloads

When you download a file in Safari, you can choose whether to save it to iCloud or on your iPhone.

iCloud Drive: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. This allows you to access the downloaded file on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

On My iPhone: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder on your iPhone.

Share website passwords with a group

You can create a group of trusted contacts and share a set of passwords. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

You can choose what privacy settings you want across Safari, and create individual exceptions for websites. See Browse privately .
