Grand tourers evoke journeys that span nations and even continents, and while any car can take you from A to B, few can match the elegance of a sleek touring coupe that catches the eyes of all as it flies by.

A true grand tourer needs to be fast, of course, but it also needs to be comfortable; you want to arrive at your destination relaxed and refreshed, not worn out from a stiff suspension and race-ready seats. A proper GT also needs to know how to navigate twisty pavement, since the best drives involve the occasional road less traveled; if you just wanted to go straight to your destination, you’d take a plane.

Four doors are two too many; a true GT may have a back seat, but one meant more for occasional use or luggage than regular occupation. And while many grand tourers have convertible variants, those cars worthy of the name must wear hardtops for the right style.

The ranks of these vehicles are not as rich as they once were — storied brands like Porsche, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz have long since abandoned the GT-car market — but those that remain are among some of the best such vehicles to ever roam the roads.

Bentley Continental GT

When the Bentley Continental GT debuted in 2002, it relaunched an entire marque with it. Before it, Bentley was mostly known for rebadged Rolls-Royces powered by an engine with roots in the 1950s. The Continental GT’s arrival marked the start of a new era under the Volkswagen Group’s ownership, one in which Bentley would rise to its full potential for the first time in decades.

With a design that borders on timeless — it hasn’t changed much in 21 years, nor has it needed to — remarkable performance, and one of the most elegant and comfortable interiors found in a car, the Continental GT stands as a true 21st-century icon of the automotive realm. It offers a choice of twin-turbocharged engines: a robust, thunderous V8 and a more subdued yet even more powerful W12. Of course, choosing an engine is just the start; after that comes diving into the nigh-infinite list of colors, trims and materials that Bentley offers in order to let buyers make their dream car one of a kind.

Bentley’s journey with the Continental GT is still ongoing: It is in the process of swapping out both its existing power plants for a new plug-in hybrid V8 setup. At 771 horsepower, the new system will be more powerful than either predecessor . In fact, we fully expect the new powertrain to elevate this modern embodiment of the GT ideal to even greater heights.

BMW 8 Series/M8 Competition

The BMW 8 Series, in 840i form, starts at below six-figures yet comes with a sumptuous cabin with exquisite front thrones, a comfortable ride, and a body that looks fast standing still — features that define a proper grand tourer.  It may only pack six cylinders, but what a six they are; not only can the turbo inline-six send it from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, but it also enables the 840i to squeeze 29 miles out of every gallon on the highway.

Even the top-shelf M8 Competition is a good value for what it offers. The M8 offers near-supercar performance on the straights and in the curves, complete with a specially-tuned AWD system that lets you push most or all of the power to the rear wheels for tail-happy antics. That’s on top of the same blend of delightful qualities as its less-powerful siblings, and still can be had well-equipped for under $150,000.

Ferrari Roma

Ferrari has a long history of gran turismos , as they’re called in Italy, stretching back to the 166 Inter of 1948. These days, the honor of being Maranello’s GT is performed by the Roma — and while it may technically also be Ferrari’s entry-level model, there’s nothing here that would leave you thinking that, because Maranello doesn’t really do entry-level. 

The Roma is a sultry machine, with more than a hint of eager mako to its sleek design — unmistakably exotic, unmistakably Ferrari. Inside, there’s a surprisingly tech-forward cockpit that packs a full array of touchscreens and touch-sensitive haptic controls, but homages to the past remain: The gearbox controls resemble the gated stick shifts of prior F-cars, and the digital tachometer looks like an analog gauge.

Leave the Roma in its gentlest settings and it’s happy to play road-trip hero, peacefully cruising at speeds than in lesser cars might feel too fast. But like all modern Ferraris, it’s also happy to hang with the best sports cars in the world once the road turns wind-y. Take the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission’s shifts into your own hands with the paddles behind the wheel to keep the howling V8 near the redline, click the manettino drive mode switch into Race, and this GT transforms into a vicious back-road-devouring beast.

Most of the time, automotive designs wind up watered down on the path from concept car to production ride. Not so with the Lexus LC. When it landed on the streets, it did so as a carbon copy of the LF-LC concept of 2012 … a seriously good thing, as the LF-LC was one of the best-looking concepts of the decade. The production LC’s runway-worthy looks — fashion or aviation, either seems applicable here — suck in the level of attention usually reserved for Ferraris, McLarens, and Lamborghinis.

This is a car to look your best in, and a car well-suited for long journeys, too. The seats are all-day comfortable, and the dashboard’s asymmetrical design is designed to focus everything towards the driver for ease of use on the go. (A mild 2024 refresh fixed the interior’s Achilles’ heel, replacing the annoying trackpad infotainment system with a touchscreen setup.) And while the rarity of smooth, naturally aspirated V8 engines like the LC 500’s makes it the enthusiast’s choice, serious road trippers might consider the hybrid V6-powered LC 500h; with a 22.2-gallon fuel capacity and an EPA rating of 33 mpg highway, it can go more than 700 miles on a tank.

Aston Martin DB12

Much like the movie character who helped elevate the brand to the prominence it enjoys today, Aston Martin’s models are defined by their numbers. Normally, the automaker’s grand tourers’ alphanumeric names jump by twos between generations; the DB7 begat the DB9, which begat the DB11. But in this case, the 12 in DB12 — the first time in 54 years Aston has followed brand pioneer David Brown’s initials with an even number — subtly indicates that the model is a facelifted version of the DB11 that entered service eight years back.

That said, the upgrades are more than enough to warrant a new moniker. Outside, it’s more aggressive, while the interior benefits from a substantial revamp that brings higher-quality materials and modern electronics, including (at last) a new touchscreen infotainment system. The sole engine available is an Mercedes-AMG-sourced V8, but since it puts out more power than the DB11’s V12, few will complain about the performance — or, in all likelihood, anything at all once they hit the open road.

Maserati GranTurismo

These days, the first question many of us have to ask when considering a new car is: gas or electric? After all, while there’s impressive innovation happening on both sides of the powertrain divide, many a car company forces you to decide which source of energy you prefer. If you like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, you have to take it with battery power; if you dig the Aston Martin Vantage, you’re stuck burning fuel.

Not so in Maserati’s latest gran turismo. On the internal combustion side, the GranTurismo’s Modena and Trofeo trim levels offer the brand’s twin-turbo V6 that rolled out in the MC20 supercar, connected to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive. Should you prefer electric, there’s the GranTurismo Folgore — Italian for lightning — which delivers shocking acceleration and handling thanks to a trio of electric motors that spit out more power than a McLaren 750S. Either way, however, you score the same stellar design sure to earn admiring stares from every gearhead and a modern and luxurious cabin with room for four adults, almost comfortably, even.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Few brands are better-suited to going electric than Rolls-Royce. For more than a century, the Spirit of Ecstasy has built cars that prioritize smoothness, comfort, and quiet above all else — qualities that EVs lend themselves to naturally. The brand’s first electric car, the Spectre, doesn’t aim to make waves amongst the Rolls faithful; rather, it simply continues to excel at the mission the brand always has, just free of tailpipe emissions.

The exterior is unmistakably Rolls-Royce, but a fresher, more modern take on the classic look; the grille is slightly raked back, the headlights slimmed down, and the roofline faster and more flowing than its gas-powered Wraith predecessor. Inside, there’s the brand’s typical old-fashioned, ultra-luxury interior, with lesser emphasis on screens and greater emphasis on beautiful craftsmanship — the kind of interior that leaves you feeling better after a long journey than you did when you started.

Granted, it won’t set any range records, thanks in no small part to its 6,559-lb curb weight. Then again, should you decide to take the Spectre on a long journey, it can fast-charge at up to 195 kW, adding more than 180 miles of range in 34 minutes — less time than it takes to order and eat a Nicoise salad. And you won’t have to worry about fue getting on your hands at the pump.

2024 CARS Tour Schedule Revealed

CONCORD, N.C.- The 2024 CARS Tour schedule was announced Nov. 27.

Additionally, zMax was announced as the title sponsor for the 2024 season, along with the renewal of FloRacing as the official broadcast partner of the series going forward.

The series will hold 19 events for the second year in a row, with all events’ broadcasts being held on FloRacing. Both the Late Model Stock Car and Pro Late Model seasons will begin at Southern National Motorsports Park in March, with the Pros opening their season on March 2, while the Late Model Stocks will begin their season one week later on March 9. 

The two biggest highlights of the schedule are the return of Orange County Speedway and a second date at North Wilkesboro Speedway to go along with the NASCAR All-Star Race week event in May. Both divisions will be at Orange County on April 20, while both divisions will crown their champion at North Wilkesboro in October for a Friday-Saturday two-day event. 

“There is a lot to unpack and a lot to be excited about this season – two trips to North Wilkesboro and adding Orange County to the schedule,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. “It’s going to be tough competition for the drivers and a great show for our fans in the stands, and for those watching on FloRacing. Our partnership with FloRacing has helped tremendously in building exposure and excitement around the zMAX CARS Tour. I’m looking forward to continuing that.”

Earnhardt is a longtime team owner in the CARS Tour, having been a part of the tour with at least a part-time schedule every year since the beginning of the series in 2015, including championship seasons with Josh Berry in 2017 and Carson Kvapil in 2022 and 2023. 

“This year we committed ourselves to helping grow an already-established CARS Tour and regional asphalt racing as a whole,” Kevin Harvick added. “Having the opportunity to bring on a respected brand and partner like zMAX does so much for the health and professionalism of the zMAX CARS Tour.”

Much like Earnhardt, Harvick is involved in the series through team ownership, with the revival of Kevin Harvick Inc. for 2023 featuring a Late Model Stock car that ran part time in the series in 2023. Harvick was behind the wheel at North Wilkesboro, with Layne Riggs filling out the rest of the season. Harvick has hinted at expansion for the team heading into 2024.

Connor Zilisch Scores First CARS Tour Late Model Stock Win at Hickory

The Trackhouse Racing development driver added yet another win to his already impressive tally with the zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stock win at 'The Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars.'

Connor Zilisch is eager to prove he can win anywhere in 2024.

The 17-year-old was already part of winning efforts at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring to start the year, but he's also been honing his craft in oval racing in recent years. That dedication paid off Saturday with a win at Hickory Motor Speedway in the zMAX CARS Tour's Late Model Stock division.

Zilisch flexed his muscle after qualifying 11th, making his way into the top five before the 50-lap mark of the 150-lap race. The Trackhouse Racing development driver took the lead on lap 111 and held off Brenden Queen on a late restart to take the win.

"I want to take credit for it, but it was all this race car my [Pinnacle Racing Group] team brought," said Zilisch in victory lane. "We worked so hard this offseason. We weren't able to race the first race of the season, I had some conflict. To come here, my first race with this team, and end up in victory lane in a CARS Tour Late Model Stock race is incredible.

"I've won the Rolex 24, I've won the Sebring 12 Hour, but this race right here is one I've wanted for so long. I've worked so hard in these Late Model Stocks. It's just a testament to all these guys. This car was so good and so fast, it made my job easy."

While Zilisch is better known for his road racing accomplishments, he hopes that a win against some of the top Late Model drivers in a CARS Tour event shows he can also get the job done on ovals.

"It's a dream come true to win one of these races, but hopefully it's the first of many," said Zilisch. "The level of competition in this series is incredible. Fifteen guys can come out here and win a race on any given weekend. That makes these wins that much more special. I think my best run going into today was maybe ninth, so a win is big for me.

"I've definitely had people saying, oh, he can't drive on an oval, this and that. I feel like if I put the work in, I can race anywhere."

Kyle Campbell Stays Perfect With CARS Pro Late Models in 2024

Kyle Campbell is now two-for-two to start the Pro Late Model season in the zMAX CARS Tour, as he won the 100-lap event to start Saturday evening's proceedings at Hickory.

Campbell was dominant in the race, only briefly losing the lead to Caden Kvapil in a battle near the halfway mark of the event. As fate would have it, Campbell's hot start is thanks in part to acquiring a car from the Kvapil stable.

“We got a good car purchased from the Kvapil family. The approach never really changed. I’ve got to keep all the fenders on it. If I don’t keep all the fenders on it, we don’t get to come back next week."

However, contact between those two drivers put a damper on Kvapil's evening as he finished 14th, one lap down.

“I don’t really know what happened to me and Kvapil. He was really fast until we got together down in turn one. Spotter says it was a racing deal, I don’t think I pinched him too hard. I’m sorry to him if I did anything wrong. We don’t want to tear his stuff up, we bought the car from him.”

Nevertheless, Campbell carried on to the win, proving his season-opening victory at Southern National Motorsports was anything but a fluke.

“I think everyone, obviously, when I won at Southern National, that was a surprise, I feel," said Campbell. "People underestimated me because of how I ran last year. It wasn’t the best car in the world. It doesn’t look good, but nobody really knows that. It definitely added a lot of confidence.

"I didn’t feel we had a great car in practice. Just like at Southern National, when it came to qualifying time, it clicked with the pole and the win, so this one feels pretty good."

Spencer Davis finished second, with strong words for Conner Jones after their battle for the runner-up spot in the second half of the race.

“We just came in and adjusted the toe," said Davis. "We had a little bit of an issue there. Everybody on my team did a good job getting me back out there before the green flags ran. We got it back right how we had it in practice. We had an issue that arose in qualifying, and it showed. We passed 28 cars clean."

“Some kids just don’t know how to race," Davis continued. "They’ve never known how to race, no matter what series he’s in, no matter what ride he buys. We played around for a little bit and Kyle Campbell got far enough away from us.

“We’re here to kick ass and take names, so we’re not here to run second. It’s a disappointing night. I’ll have to thank the guys back at the shop. We’ll print us a new wrap, get the 44 off of it and we’ll be good to go.”

Tempers flared after a multi-car incident on lap 48, as Tyler Tanner shared his displeasure with Ashton Higgins. After climbing out of his own car, Tanner ran to Higgins' machine on pit road before striking it with his own steering wheel.

CARS Tour has a new title sponsor in zMAX and has released a 2024 schedule that features a second date at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The second event will serve as the championship weekend. That’s in addition to the All Star Race week event.

Orange County Speedway also returns to the schedule on April 20.

“There is a lot to unpack and a lot to be excited about this season – two trips to North Wilkesboro and adding Orange County to the schedule,” said Earnhardt Jr. “It’s going to be tough competition for the drivers and a great show for our fans in the stands, and for those watching on FloRacing. zMax is owned by Speedway Motorsports.

Things just keep getting bigger and better for the CARS Tour Late Model Series as it embarks on its 10th season of competition as the Southeast’s premier asphalt late model series. 

Today the CARS Tour ownership group, comprised of motorsports icons Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick and Justin Marks, announced the addition of zMAX® as the series’ new entitlement sponsor for the upcoming 2024 season and beyond. The group also rolled out the 2024 zMAX CARS Tour schedule and confirmed the renewal of FloRacing as its official streaming partner for all 19 events.

“This year we committed ourselves to helping grow an already-established CARS Tour, and regional asphalt racing as a whole,” said Harvick. “Having the opportunity to bring on a respected brand and partner like zMAX does so much for the health and professionalism of the zMAX CARS Tour.”

For the second consecutive season, all 19 of the zMAX CARS Tour events will be livestreamed on FloRacing. The video streaming service, which became the official streaming partner of zMAX CARS Tour earlier this year, is a subscription-based company dedicated to growing grassroots motorsports. 

“We feel that CARS has truly become the premier short track asphalt tour in America, and we could not be happier to have the series back on FloRacing,” said General Manager of FloRacing, Michael Rigsby. “Dale and the entire team with CARS are committed to growing short track pavement racing, and that's truly evident by all they've done over the last year. 2024 is going to be a big, big year for CARS, and we are beyond thrilled to highlight that.”

In addition, the newly-minted zMAX CARS Tour released its 2024 season schedule, which kicks off at Southern National Motorsports Park (Kenly, N.C.) on Saturday, March 2, with Pro Late Models, the first of its two divisions. The Late Model Stock Car division will begin its season at the same track one week later, on March 9. 

“There is a lot to unpack and a lot to be excited about this season – two trips to North Wilkesboro and adding Orange County to the schedule,” said Earnhardt Jr. “It’s going to be tough competition for the drivers and a great show for our fans in the stands, and for those watching on FloRacing. Our partnership with FloRacing has helped tremendously in building exposure and excitement around the zMAX CARS Tour. I’m looking forward to continuing that.” 

Highlighting the series schedule are back-to-back PLM and LMSC races at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 14 – 15. The zMAX CARS Tour will return to the .625-mile short track on Oct. 19 for the season finale, where it will crown both its series champions.

These Model Car Kits Will Delight Any Auto Enthusiast — You Just Need to Build Them

If you’re a car fanatic and you enjoy building things, chances are you’re also an avid model car kit hobbyist—or want to try your hand at the DIY craft. The cooler months are the perfect time to dive in as one model kit can span an entire cozy weekend indoors, no matter your level of expertise. Whether you’re into classics like the 1960s Ford Mustang or you want to build a miniature of the Ferrari 488 GTE, chances are there’s a kit to build a car you love.

Another nice plus is that model kits are relatively inexpensive, starting at about $20. There are pricier options on the market, too, including plenty from Lego ,that come with 1,000-plus pieces and cost upwards of $100. Here’s a guide to get you building, crafting, and tinkering.

What to Consider

Glue and paint.

If you’re a model kit newbie or looking to gift a model car, you can buy a die-cast kit with painted metal parts ready to assemble, or a plastic molded car that needs glue and paint.

If you enjoy tinkering and following directions to assemble things, a die-cast kit is the way to go. If you’re artistically inclined and skilled at detailed work with paint and decals, challenge yourself with a plastic molded kit. (I, unwisely, use my fingers to cut out plastic parts from die-cast kits. Don’t do that. They’ll break. Grab a pair of tweezers to pop out pieces instead.)

For kits that don’t come with supplies, make sure you purchase model-specific paints as they dry thinner than the type you’d put on a wall or a canvas. Vallejo makes great beginner-friendly model kit paints and Revell has affordable model kit paint brushes . For glue, something with a fine tip applicator is best. Tamiya makes a solid one.

You can also buy Lego building kits for adults and teens alike, which omit the need for glue or paint. Expect to shell out at least $100 if it’s car-specific—all car builds come from the pricier, more mature-leaning Lego Icons series.

Difficulty Level

Most retailers provide each kit’s complexity in a level or an age range, and some also list an estimated completion time. Most model kits are suitable for teens and up, but some children may be able to assemble tougher kits with adult supervision. Detail-oriented kits that require painting generally take the longest.

You should also take a look at the scale to see how big the finished product is—it’s listed in a ratio format that expresses the model’s size in relation to the real car it replicates. For parents, it’s a good idea to look at how small the pieces are to see if the project will be satisfying or frustrating for your little one.

How We Selected

Our selection includes die-cast and model car kits from reputable brands known for turning out high-quality products, such as AMT, Revell, and Tamiya, plus a few from Lego. These model car kids span all experience levels, from beginner to expert, and multiple price points. I've been toying with Gundam and Pokemon model kits for the last year or so, cutting and pushing plastic out of molds to piece together for display, so I know what goes into a high-quality kit. We used a combination of in-house expertise, research, buying guides from model kit and hobbyist publications, and user reviews to find the best model car kits.

1) 1967 Chevy Impala Model Car Kit

The 1967 Chevy Impala features Coke-bottle styling, with flared fenders and a narrow center. This model car kit captures every curve of the vintage muscle car and includes more than 100 parts, with chrome rims, rally wheels, a detailed interior and chassis, plus a 427-cubic-inch V8 engine. It also comes with a full-color decal sheet.

While most reviewers love this model kit, some say pieces are so thin that they are easily breakable. Still, with a gentle hand, this should be a simple build for older teens and adults.

2) Lamborghini Aventador Roadster Model Car Kit

This model car kit is an excellent choice for first-time builders, as there are only 24 pieces, and there’s no glue or paint required to finish the job.

All of the Lamborghini’s die-cast metal parts come painted and easily snap together or attach using an included tool. The end result is impressive and realistic—the doors open, and there’s a working steering wheel.

A few reviewers describe the instructions as hard to understand, but the majority say the kit is easy enough for kids, with one claiming their 8-year-old assembled it with no problem.

3) 2015 Ford GT Model Car Kit

In 1966, the first model of this car—the GT40 Mk II—famously beat Ferrari’s 330 P3 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. (If you want the full story of the saga, check out the fictionalized version in Ford v Ferrari , starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.)

Fast forward several decades to this slick car, unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Tamiya’s model car kit does a stellar job replicating the 2015 Ford GT—this set doesn’t even skip the underside design.

There are also buttresses, door-side air tunnels, and head and tail lights with multiple pieces. Plus, it comes with a metal-plated wheel, an oil tank, and a complete set of decals, including optional racing stripes.

4) 1970s Dodge Challenger 2-in-1 Model Car Kit

Fun fact: The 1970 Dodge Challenger was the company’s first pony car—stylish, compact, and affordable. This two-in-one model kit allows you to build the factory stock version or the street machine (with dual four-barrel high-rise intake).

It features chrome-plated parts, including rims and bumpers, black vinyl tires, and a realistic detailed interior. The kit is for intermediate to experienced model car builders and comes with decals, but glue and paint is sold separately.

Many users say the part fit is excellent and more experienced builders will have a blast, though it’s not best for younger children.

5) Chevrolet Camaro Z28

This Chevy Camaro Z28 from the Lego Icons series is an excellent build for adults. It’s made of over 1,400 pieces and comes with a set of racing stripes so you can customize the appearance of your car with grey, white, or red accents. You can also choose which headlights the Camaro has.

Several users say this is one of their favorite Lego builds due to its extensive detail and fun, lengthy build process. One notes the interior of the car as a standout, with small details like an open comic book in the backseat and rear view mirror ornaments.

6) 1968 Volkswagen Beetle Model Car Kit

Volkswagon ended the Beetle’s production in 2019—more than 23 million cars were sold worldwide during its 70-plus-year run. But of all bugs that came off the assembly line, the 1968 Beetle is perhaps the most iconic.

This 1:24-scale model kit features a steering wheel that can be built on the left or right side, an opening front hood, and a detailed 1500-cc-rear-mounted engine. Chrome plates, black tires, waterslide decals, and a painting guide also come with it. Keep in mind that this kit requires model glue, though, sold separately.

Users love the model’s clean fitting parts, but some note it may be too challenging for its suggested age of 12 or older.

7) Ferrari 488 GTE Model Car Kit

Lego’s take on the iconic Ferrari 488 GTE has a ton of authentic features, including original race stickers and paint colors, a V8 engine with moving pistons, and interior details that are incredibly accurate. There’s also a functional steering wheel and two doors that open, plus front and rear suspension.

The 1,677-piece set is for experienced Lego builders, and although its scale isn’t listed, the model car is quite large at 19 inches long.

8) 1960s Ford Mustang Model Car Kit

Lego’s Ford Mustang model car kit has parts to customize your creation, including exhaust pipes, front chin and rear ducktail spoilers, and a nitrous oxide tank.

The mini 1960s muscle car has realistic details, such as white racing stripes and five-spoke rims, plus there’s a V8 engine, an air filter, hoses, and a battery under the front hood. The trunk and doors also open, and other highlights include a removable roof panel, a dashboard with radio, a gearshift on the console, and an operational steering wheel.

9) 1965 Chevy Stepside Pickup Model Car Kit

We had to include at least one bad*** truck in our roundup. This ’65 Chevy Stepside pickup kit gives you the option to build either a factory or custom model using the included stock and graphic decals.

There’s also a 283 V8 engine with optional parts, including disc brakes, and chrome wheels with moon hubcaps to pair with whitewall tires or five-spoke mag wheels with low-profile tires.

The model car kit has illustrated instructions and is ideal for intermediate-level builders and confident beginners.

MARNE -- A former track champion at Berlin Raceway found himself in victory lane, but in a different car.

Kevin Ford, of Coopersville, is one of the top drivers of the Baker Auto Group Sportsman series, winning the championship in 2022. However, along with driving his No. 4 car on a weekly basis, Ford has hopped behind the wheel of the No. 5 car in the Model Coverall Limited Late Model series.

Ford has been sharing the seat with Nick DeLongpre, a former Super Late Model and Superstock driver, In his first couple of races on May 18, Ford finished second in a double feature. Then, in the 50-lap main event on Saturday night, Ford outlasted some of the series’ best to take home the checkered flag for the first time.

“This thing is just a joy to drive,” Ford said in victory lane. “It rolls really well...the thing was good. I can’t believe we won one of these dang things.”

He started the race in sixth, and was buying time as the race was clean and green for most of it. However, after a competition caution at the halfway mark, Tim Greene and Denny Anderson came together on the restart, with Greene’s No. 21 car suffering significant damage after hitting the frontstretch wall, followed up smack the concrete barrier in Turn 3 after cutting a tire. Greene was able to walk away from the crash, though his car was done for the night.

That placed Ford alongside Anderson, and when the green flag dropped, Ford jumped out to a big lead. Though veteran Billy Eppink started to close the gap in the closing laps, Ford was able to hang on and pick up his first win in the division.

Ford credits DeLongpre and car owner Tim Sweeney for helping set up the car to be fast.

“We struggled in practice, I didn’t qualify very well...We ran really bad in the heat race. I could tell what it was going to do, and I didn’t like it. Nick DeLongpre and Tim Sweeney came in and made a change, gosh dang if they weren’t right.”

A BROKEN COMPACT

It was a bumpy night for the National Compact Touring Series as they made their second of three appearances on Saturday night. After a couple of exciting heat races, which saw Kyle Ramsey, Matt Elsey Sr. and Logan Charron come away victorious, fans were treated to an entertaining 25-lap feature.

Raymond Powell grabbed an early lead from Chris Elwell, and though there was a caution two laps into the race, Powell would regain the lead once the race resumed. The driver out of Milford built a considerable lead. However, lapped traffic caused problems for Powell, allowing fast qualifier Matthew Elsey Jr. to catch up. The Ostego native took the lead with just 10 laps to go after Powell lost power.

Elsey never looked back, lapping all but two cars in the field, winning almost 16 seconds.

ROBERTS BEATS HIS OWN CARS

The Ohio Wheelman Super Stocks made their one and only stop at Berlin this season.

In the 35-lap feature, Josh Caranci and Austin Wrestko battled for the lead early, but Caranci had to pull off the track due to a noticeable leak coming out of his car. That led to Wrestko battling for the lead with Tyler Hufford and Joe Coursen. On Lap 5, Hufford got loose and put Wrestko into the wall, with Hufford’s No. 5 car being sandwiched between Wrestko and the series points leader, Josh Poore, bringing out the red flag.

All three drivers were okay, and while Poore came out and turned a few laps when the race resumed, none of the trio finished the race.

The final 35 laps saw three cars battle for the lead. Joe and Alex Coursen, along with Billy Roberts, raced close for most of the event. Both of the Coursen cars are owned by Roberts, with none of the three wanting to wreck oneanother. However, despite Joe leading for 32 laps, Roberts found an opening to make the go-ahead pass with just three laps to go, and ended up taking home the win.

WINS FOR SALE

Earlier in the week, many people found longtime racer Alan Marcott’s Engine Pro Vintage Modified on sale. Though he admitted he was driving the car as an advertising ploy, that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to compete for another checkered flag.

After winning the first race of the VROA season at Berlin on May 4, Marcott had a really fast car again on Saturday, grabbing first place just two laps into the 20-lap feature. Though there was a caution with 11 laps to go, the driver out of Wayland managed to pull away from the field to win at Berlin once again.

LOOKING AHEAD

Berlin is taking a week off to let the track cool down but is returning with an exciting night on Saturday, June 29, as the ARCA Menards Series returns to West Michigan. The longtime series has been holding events at the track dating back to the 1960s, and has featured future NASCAR stars like Chase Elliott, William Byron and Byron native Erik Jones.

Also, the TEKTON Super Late Models will race for the first time since the Money in the Bank. The action begins at 6:30 p.m. ET and can be streamed on FloRacing.
