While the band is deeply rooted in metal, Deftones draws on a constantly-changing blend of influences. It draws on genres like alternative metal, post-punk, post-hardcore, alternative rock, stoner rock, hard rock, art rock, experimental rock, funk metal, and nu-metal to create a one-of-a-kind musical style.

Frontman and founding member Chino Moreno's specific and unique lyrical style is often described as ambiguous and indirect. The band's legacy is frequently compared to alternative rock group Radiohead, with some in the media dubbing Deftones "The Radiohead of metal.” Depeche Mode, Faith No More, Afrika Bambaataa, The Cure, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, and Hum are just a few of Moreno’s well-known influences.

Over the last 30 years, Deftones have released seven studio albums, including three platinums, and one gold certificate for its bestselling self-titled album. From humble beginnings, it’s incredible to see the journey that the band has made.

Stephen Carpenter, guitarist of the band, taught himself the instrument while confined to a wheelchair at the age of 15 after he was hit by a car while skateboarding. When his childhood friends, vocalist Chino Moreno and drummer Abe Cunningham, learned he could play, the three began jamming together, and soon formed a group.

The group featured a rotating cast of instrumentalists in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, as Cunningham temporarily departed and bassist Chi Cheng joined. With Cunningham’s return in 1993, the band finalized its lineup. Deftones signed a recording contract with Maverick Records and released the first album, Adrenaline, a few years later, in 1995.

The group’s sophomore effort, Around the Fur, dropped in 1997 and soared up the charts. The singles from the album became the band's first songs to be certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The band found continued success with the third album, White Pony, in 2000. White Pony marked a transition away from the band’s earlier, more traditional metal sound to a progressive, experimental style. The band enjoyed the most prominent commercial success with the lead single, "Change (In the House of Flies)."

Deftones released a self-titled album in 2003, marking the band’s fourth studio effort. Deftones was a darling of critics, but it failed to generate the same commercial success the band saw with White Pony.

Deftones' released its fifth album, Saturday Night Wrist, was released in 2006. Again, the album garnered much critical acclaim, but personal tensions and creative differences among band members impacted the production. Some of these issues inspired the songs included on the album.

In 2008, Deftones was at work on the next album, "Eros, tragedy struck. A severe traffic accident in Santa Clara, CA, left bassist Cheng comatose, leading to Cheng's eventual death in 2013. Sergio Vega replaced the bassist in 2009.

Deftones released its sixth album, Diamond Eyes, in 2010. In promotion of the new album, Deftones embarked on a triple-headline tour. Alice in Chains and Mastodon were the other headliners, and the tour encompassed many major North American cities.

Koi No Yokan, the band's seventh album, dropped in 2012, followed by Gore in 2016. Both albums highlighted the band's increasingly experimental shift in style and received high critical praise.

Deftones released its ninth album, Ohms, in September 2020. The album received significant critical acclaim for the return to the band's original sound. At the same time, the band was scheduled to begin a joint tour with Gojira, which was ultimately postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In October 2020, the band announced a 20th-anniversary reissue of White Pony, scheduled for release in December of that same year. The special reissue edition was initially packaged along with Black Stallion, a companion remix album featuring guest performances by artists DJ Shadow, Mike Shinoda, and Robert Smith.

In March 2022, an official announcement was made that bassist Sergio Vega had left the band in early 2021.

As well as producing several critically acclaimed albums, the band has a Grammy Award under its belt for Best Metal Performance in 2001 for its song “Elite.” Additionally, Deftones also received Album of the Year at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards for Koi No Yokan.

Deftones has spent a large proportion of its career touring locally, internationally, and worldwide.

Live reviews

What a night! The band opened with "Headup" from their sophomore album, Around the Fur, then dove straight into "My Own Summer". These two tracks made me super happy because they were some of my absolute favorites when I was an angry teenager. LOL. (I guess I still kind of am today.)

Just after those two older songs, they floored the crowd with the opening track from Koi No Yokan - "Swerve City," followed by two more from White Pony - "Digital Bath," and "Elite." The former being a sonic landscape of pure magic and the latter being an absolute bone-crushing performance. (Although I will say the vocoder part on that track got on my nerves a bit since it sounded like it was overpowering the rest of the instruments.)

To my surprise, they only played one track from the new album, Gore, which was "The Phantom Bride," though it was hauntingly beautiful. (I was really hoping for Prayers/Triangles - but it was still great!)

This was followed by another slower song, "You've Seen the Butcher" - which is just a brutally heavy (almost jazzy) tune from the album Diamond Eyes.

Another Diamond Eyes track was next - "Rocket Skates" - which was arguably the most fun and energetic of the entire set in my opinion. The chorus, "GUNS! RAZORS! KNIVES! FUCK WITH ME!" showed on little LED panels behind the band - it was so cool to watch and sing along.

Another slow burner from Koi No Yokan, "Rosemary," followed. I love this song with its plodding intensity, soaring chorus, and absolutely devastating breakdown at the end.

A crowd favorite from White Pony (probably their most popular album) followed, which was extremely intense with the screams in the middle of the track. Man, HOW DOES CHINO DO THAT?!?! I know it was a woman on the album, but I swear I we witnessed him throw an absolutely blood-curdling shriek right toward the end of the song. WOW.

The band did something sneaky next. The played the first verse of "Rivière" from Saturday Night Wrist before stomping through the heavier part of the end of that song. Again, I was a little disappointed (Why not "Hole in the Earth"? Darn. Next time.) Still, very cool.

Two more Deftones classics followed from White Pony - "Change (In the House of Flies)" and "Back to School (Mini Maggit)". These aren't my favorites - I got really tired of "Change" when the band blew up in the early 2000s, but the still jammed hard, so nothing to complain about their performance.

The last two songs were "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" - which is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS - and "Minerva," - from the self-titled album - which is my best friend's favorite song. Both were absolutely wonderful; the crowd was absolutely insane during the last song.

Then Chino dropped his guitar. The stage went dark and they walked off stage... the air was so thick and you could just feel something very special was about to happen.

Then we saw the bassist sneak back to his spot... it was an encore! The evening closed with "Teething" from the Crow 2 Soundtrack. Folks, let me tell you THEY. KILLED. THIS. SONG. It was amazing. I have long loved this track and it was the absolute perfect way to end the night.

Overall, I wish we'd heard more stuff from the new album, Gore, and my wife REAAAAALLLLY wanted them to play the title track "Diamond Eyes" from their sixth album.

But all-in-all I'm a huge fan and that will never change! I absolutely loved the concert. Chino, Abe, Stef and the rest of the band were all incredible and I can't wait to see them again!

Amazing performance by Deftones. Three trapped tigers and thrice sounded great as well. Rise Against had their hands full closing out the show after deftones just killed it. I am suprised they didnt just let deftones close every night. No offense to rise against but coming after a band thats been around as long as deftones would be tough for anybody. They sounded okay, Mid Florida Ampitheatre is a tough one because its built almost in a dome atmosphere essentially making it a big as subwoofer. So bass and drums kinda carry abit over guitars and vocals. Set wise Deftones felt a little short, almost rushed mainly due to Tampa curfew. But I am a Deftones fan since the beginning so ofcourse I want to here 30 songs from their catalog everytime. Thrice really blew me away. They really havent lost any steps since being away for abit. Every song was crisp and clear. You could tell they were really enjoying themselves and trying like hell to take in all the time they were given. Three trapped tigers were also a nice treat. It makes me wonder what these guys could do if they were to add a vocalist in the mix. Being strictly instrumental is tough to do especially opening for bands like Rise Against and Deftones. But that being said those guys were juggernauts on their respective instruments so that has to be acknowledged and appreciated by fans of any genre. Overall solid show and interesting tour pairing. Both deftones and rise against probably gained some new ears for their music so it was a win win for both bands.

Seeing the one-of-a-kind band Deftones in action was an amazing sight indeed. This five-piece put on a mostly flawless show, except for having pretty bad sound quality on the first song which was fixed by the second. Their unique sound known as 'dream-metal' to some was a mixture of dream pop melodies and atmospheric vocals with heavier riffs that ranged from the soft and surreal sounds of White Pony to the nu-metal influenced aggression of their first two albums, which has since matured into the intelligent stylings of Diamond Eyes. Anyways, due to being in the seats (even though they were good seats) I couldn't get a good look at how they were playing, though at least it sounded pretty spot-on. The only thing I didn't care for was the MC who only did some live playing but used a lot of background tracks as well. Besides that, the show was perfect, especially in terms of the setlist as its been a long time I've known as much of a band's set as here. They opened with "Rocket Skates" before playing "Diamond Eyes", "Be Quiet and Drive", "Digital Bath", and "You've Seen the Butcher" all in a row, making the most perfect run of my favorite tracks. Then for the second half they covered all their older material with "Engine No. 9", "Change", "Root", and finally closing with my first favorite song "7 Words". Unfortunately they didn't play "Passenger", their cover of "Simple Man", or their song "Mein" which features Serj (perfect guest appearence opportunity) but I won't complain about their excellent show.

Deftones have been around for longer than most realise, yet one look at their mammoth crowd gathered beneath Reading's main stage would be a good indication to the reputation this alt-metal band have achieved. Masters of a difficult genre known as dream metal, the quintet kick off proceedings with a note perfect rendition of 'Diamond Eyes' and the crowd instantly begin to thrash and move along to the surrealistic rock vibes.

Lead vocalist Chino Merino is clearly enjoying himself up onstage as he dances around to the opening beats of 'My Own Summer' as his tight band play the instrumentals at blistering pace. He conducts the masses in a singalong, and it did not matter if you knew the music or not, there was a wonderful feeling of unison.

A number of the cult hits were included such as 'Be Quiet and Drive' and 'Hexagram' yet it was a sublime rendition of their very first single '7 Words' that really brought the house down. The band gave everything to this performance and for a moment Merino and co stood to soak up the Reading atmosphere and appreciate how far they had come since the first single had been released in 1997.

Deftones are a drop of much needed relief in a sea of Californian music. The band are metal heads: they specialise in alternative heavy metal, unusual for Californians. They are an incredibly talented bunch, who are unique in that they have achieved great crossovers with Rock and Metal, and even the occasional Pop. Their sound has been described as ‘Dream Metal’ by some, due to its mix of dream pop melodies with more aggressive metal and rock chords. Deftones mix atmospheric vocals with pumping, hard core instrumentals to great success. They are a force to be reckoned with on stage: the crowd was crazy for the surrealist rock vibes the band was giving off. The venue was packed and a mosh pit had soon formed, with various thrashing and jumping going on at full force. The lead vocalist was powerful and loved the audience, often getting them revved up and shouting out to us. Classics such as ‘Diamond Eyes’, ‘My Own Summer’, ‘Passenger’ and ‘Change’ were all performed and all received great crowd reactions, real highlights of the show.

I went for AFI - had seen some bad reviews of their live stuff in the past so was a little worried but they totally killed it, hope they tour UK soon.

The deftones however were a different story; my parents were there for them, however we ended up leaving early because it was 1) so obnoxiously loud that I had to wear my headphones to dull it even slightly 2) the crowd was aggressive and throwing beer everywhere 3) the songs weren't really my parents favourites and the sound wasn't great.

I can tell they're good performers, I just think a mixture of the acoustics of the room and the sheer volume ruined it a bit. The crowd also. But I guess if you like a bit of danger in a crowd then its right up your street

They skipped out on the only other show I was supposed to see them back in 2003 (Summer Sanitarium in Minneapolis). I attended this show with certain expectations and the show went pretty much exactly as I thought it might. They played a good number of hits and bunch of stuff no one but a hardcore Deftones fan would recognize. I was a little bummed they didn't play Lotion but since they played Around the Fur and My Own Summer, I was happy (my favorite album obviously being Around the Fur). One aspect that exceeded expectations was the light show...constant lights during almost all of the show. It made the mundane middle of the show interesting and decently fun to watch.

Deftones always rocks. A lot of energy and the crowd going wild.

Chino is really good front man.

On the other arena Anhembi is the worst place that I watched a concert.

The organization fail as usual in concerts at this place. I took 45,minutes in the line to check my ticket.

They implement a process to validate if the tickets are original, where every single people must present a document end a credit card. Total fail. The lines are huge and took more than 20 minutes just to check the ticket.

The sound was very low and apparently the PAs in the middle of the crowd seems to be turned off.

The concert was really great.

The show was a long journey through the band's discography except themes from their most recent album: Gore.

The set was really powerful, even though the stage sound experienced some technical issues on the first two songs.

Deftones were MAD! Chino owned the stage and was a really good presence up there. They sounded better live than on their albums in my opinion. The only gripe i have is that it was a SHIT venue at Metro City Perth, people were struggling to see because its a multiple story building there are pillars and columns everywhere, the staff were just plain rude and lacked any sort of personality! Would love to see Deftones again, maybe with Max Cavalera with them.

DEFTONES play first show of 2024, give update on new album

Yesterday (April 12th), Deftones played their first show of 2024, rocking the stage at Coachella with a badass 12-song set that included the live debut of their cover of the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want." Maybe even more exciting, ahead of the show, singer Chino Moreno gave an update on the Deftones' next album, which is further along than fans may have expected.

Moreno and drummer Abe Cunningham gave a backstage interview where they spoke about the highly anticipated new record they've had in the works. Speaking to KROQ, Moreno said, "We've just sort of been working on and off over the last year and a half. From when we started writing to where we're sitting right now is we have a whole record recorded, all musically, and it's pretty much my job now to finish up the vocals."

"I have this show again next week and then straight after that I go back home to Oregon and I go in the studio," he continued. (Deftones will play Coachella again on the festival's second weekend.) "So as long as that takes, I hate to put a definite time frame, because we're not really in a rush. We want it to be great, I think that's most important. But it is coming and it's really good. We're really excited with what we what we've been working on, and everybody's jazzed."

Moreno also told KROQ that the album has "an invigorated kind of sound." "The creative part to me is always kind of the funnest part of being in a band," he said. "Performing is great, but coming up with something out of nothing that feeling is like cannot be topped. So when you get in the room with your friends, we're laughing, we're having fun, and then someone does something, and then I react to it, or they react to what I'm doing, or you know, it goes in a circle and then all of a sudden we lift our heads up, and there's something that exists that didn't exist before we walked in that room."

System of a Down + Deftones Announce First of Its Kind Show at Historic Venue

System of a Down and Deftones have announced a first of its kind show at a historic venue in California set to take place this summer.

The standalone concert, headlined by the two bands, will take place on Aug. 17 at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, making it the first-ever ticketed concert to take place there, according to Pollstar . The Mars Volta , Viagra Boys and VOWWS are set to perform during the show as well.

Golden Gate Park has been home to the annual Outside Lands festival several times in the past, and is where the event will take place this year from Aug. 9 through the 11. Most of the stages will be taken down at the end of the weekend, but one of the main stages will remain, which is the one System and Deftones will play on the following weekend.

"For the first time ever, a stand-alone, once in a lifetime event at the historic Golden Gate Park, System of a Down and Deftones," a video graphic posted by both bands reads.

Fans can sign up for the bands' mailing lists for early access to tickets, and then the general sale starts this Friday, April 12 at 1PM ET.

System of a Down Will Only Play Two Shows in 2024

This Golden Gate Park concert with Deftones marks System of a Down's second performance of 2024, with the first taking place later this month (April 27) at Las Vegas' Sick New World Festival .

Previously, frontman Serj Tankian told Revolver that Sick New World would "likely" be System's only performance in 2024, as touring isn't his main priority anymore.

"After years of doing it and the travel that's involved, it's one of those things where it's not the top priority on my list in life," the vocalist said.

Golden Gate Park Plans to Host Annual Concerts in the Future

While SOAD and Deftones will play the first ticketed concert at Golden Gate Park, Allen Scott of Another Planet Entertainment , the promoter that hosts Outside Lands, said that they already have next year's post-festival concert in the works.

“We wanted to host something that is unique and rare... Not just an artist that’s on tour and it’s another stop for them,” he told Pollstar.

"System of a Down is very particular in what concerts they do and how many they do. Deftones, who are from Northern California, are bigger than they’ve ever been in the history of the band. It felt like really good timing to put those two together, and then add a few bands to play prior to them... We wanted to put together a lineup that was not only unique but culturally relevant.”

The lineup for Lollapalooza 2024 has been announced — what to know

Blink-182, SZA and the Killers will headline Lollapalooza this summer in Chicago.

The annual festival's organizers announced the event's full star-studded lineup on March 19. Six days later, organizers shared the event's day-by-day schedule.

The four-day festival takes place Aug. 1-4 in Grant Park and will also feature headlining sets by Tyler, the Creator, Hozier, Stray Kids, Melanie Martinez, Future X Metro Boomin and Skrillex. More than 150 other acts will also perform across eight stages during the festival.

Here's what we know about Lollapalooza 2024.

Who is performing at Lollapalooza 2024?

The 2024 Lollapalooza headliners are Blink-182, SZA, the Killers, Tyler, the Creator, Hozier, Future X Metro Boomin, Stray Kids, Melanie Martinez and Skrillex.

Other big names on the roster include "Mean Girls" star Reneé Rapp , Kesha , the Deftones, Tate McRae , Cults and Brandi Cyrus.

The festival's lineup features more than 170 acts from around the world performing across eight stages.

On which days will the festival's headliners perform?

Tyler, the Creator, and Hozier kick off Lollapalooza as headliners on Thursday, Aug. 1.

SZA and the Straw Kids will headline on Friday, Aug. 2.

The Killers and Future X Metro Boomin headline the festival on Saturday, Aug. 3, with Skrillex also treating fans to a performance on Saturday.

System Of A Down and Deftones announce stacked one-night-only co-headline show

The two leading nu-metal-but-not-really bands will be joined by The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and Vowws

System Of A Down and Deftones have announced a standalone co-headline show.

The two beloved nu metal -era bands will perform at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, on August 17.

It will be the first-ever night-time concert to take place at the outdoor park and garden.

Support will come from prog rockers The Mars Volta, Swedish punks Viagra Boys and US industrial rockers Vowws.

Tickets to the concert will go on sale on Friday (April 12) at 10am Pacific Time.

Deftones have confirmed that the System Of A Down co-headline concert will be a one-off, describing it on social media as “a standalone, once-in-a-lifetime event”.

System Of A Down and Deftones came to prominence during the ascent of nu metal in the late 1990s. However, both bands have rejected the genre tag.

In a 2017 interview with Metal Hammer , Deftones singer Chino Moreno revealed the band went as far as to refuse tours with Limp Bizkit and Korn to avoid being pigeonholed as a nu metal act.

“We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with,” he said.

“It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan [Davis] would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say.

“I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’

“The name of the genre was nu metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it.”

Similarly, System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian told Metal Hammer ’s Jon Weiderhorn in 1998: “When we write music, we try to do something different than even what we do.

“I’m serious. We want every new song to be done in a way we haven’t done before. We try to not sound like System Of A Down, let alone anyone else. That keeps us not only a step ahead, but a step ahead of ourselves.” 

The Golden Gate Park concert is one of only two concerts System Of A Down have announced for 2024. The other is a headline slot at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas on April 27.

System of a Down and Deftones to Headline Concert in Golden Gate Park

The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys, and VOWWS round out the impressive bill

System of a Down and Deftones will headline a one-off concert at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on August 17th.

The Mars Volta , Viagra Boys , and VOWWS round out a stacked bill for the outdoor event, which is being produced by Another Planet Entertainment. The show is billed as the first-ever “after dark” ticketed concert at Polo Field in Golden Gate Park and runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Get Ready For CMA Fest 2024: Listen To A Playlist By Dasha, Ella Langley, Chase Matthew, Avery Anna, & Dalton Dover

As country stars and fans flock to Nashville for CMA Fest, five of the lineup's most exciting acts curated a playlist of the songs they're looking forward to hearing live — from Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" to Lainey Wilson's "Watermelon Moonshine."

For more than 50 years, the Country Music Association has hosted the genre's biggest annual party in Nashville, Tennessee: CMA Fest . Originally dubbed Fan Fair, what began as a 5,000-person celebration of country music has turned into a four-day festival that draws an estimated 90,000 people each day. And with the genre being at an all-time high , the 2024 iteration of CMA Fest might just be the most thrilling yet.

The 51st annual CMA Fest will take over Nashville from June 6-9, with upwards of 300 country artists performing. As rising stars — and returning CMA Fest performers — Avery Anna, Dalton Dover and Chase Matthew will tell you, the magic of the weekend affair has always come down to the fans.

" I love the connection that the festival provides between artists and fans," Anna says. Dover adds, " Whether it's being reunited with those I've met in the past or getting some time to say hello to all the new faces in the crowd, it's just so special to be able to connect with everyone over our love for country music."

Matthew, who grew up in Nashville, has been part of both sides of CMA Fest. "I've seen CMA Fest grow to become this epic event that every music fan should experience," he says. "It's a great opportunity for fans to see and interact with their favorite country stars, as well as discover new artists they may not have had the opportunity to hear yet."

Even Dasha, who will be experiencing her first CMA Fest this year, knows just how important it is to any country music artist or fan: "CMA Fest is such an iconic celebration of country music."

Thanks to the runaway success of her hit "Austin," Dasha will be taking the Platform Stage at Nissan Stadium, which will highlight two budding stars each night amid performances from the genre's biggest names. "When I got that call, I got online to see the number of seats there and my jaw was on the ground," she recalls. "That'll be my biggest show to date, and I can't wait to show the people what we've got."

This year's CMA Fest also marks a first for Ella Langley, who will make her inaugural appearance on the Chevy Riverfront Stage in a "full-circle moment." And in teasing what she'll bring to her set, Langley encapsulated the energy of CMA Fest as a whole: "I hope the fans are ready for a bunch of dancing, a good message and a really good time."

9 Lively Sets From The 2024 Roots Picnic: Jill Scott, Lil Wayne, Nas, Sexyy Red, & More

From hit-filled sets by The-Dream and Babyface to a star-studded tribute to New Orleans, the 2024 iteration of the Roots Picnic was action-packed. Check out a round-up of some of the most exciting sets here.

As June kicked off over the weekend, The Roots notched another glorious celebration at West Philadelphia's Fairmount Park with the 16th annual Roots Picnic. This year's festival featured even more activations, food vendors, attendees, and lively performances.

On Saturday, June 1, the action was established from the onset. October London and Marsha Ambrosius enlivened the soul of R&B lovers, while Method Man and Redman brought out surprise guests like Chi-town spitter Common and A$AP Ferg for a showstopping outing. 

Elsewhere, rappers Smino and Sexyy Red flashed their St. Louis roots and incited fans to twerk through the aisles of the TD Pavilion. And Philly-born Jill Scott 's sultry vocals made for a memorable homecoming performance during her headlining set. 

The momentum carried over to day two on Sunday, June 2, with rising stars like Shaboozey and N3WYRKLA showing the Roots Picnic crowd why their names have garnered buzz. Later in the day, rapper Wale brought his signature D.C. swag to the Presser Stage. And while Gunna 's performance was shorter than planned, it still lit the fire of younger festgoers. 

Closing out the weekend was a savory tribute to New Orleans courtesy of The Roots themselves, which also starred Lil Wayne , acclaimed R&B vocalists, an illustrious jazz band, and some beloved NoLa natives.

The-Dream Serenaded On The Main Stage

After years away from the bright lights of solo stardom, The-Dream made a triumphant return to the festival stage on Saturday. The GRAMMY-winning songwriter and producer played his timeless R&B hits like "Falsetto" and "Shawty Is Da S––," reminding fans of his mesmerizing voice and renowned penmanship.

His vocals melted into the sunset overlooking Fairmount Park Saturday evening. And even in moments of audio malfunctions, he was able to conjure the greatness he's displayed as a solo act. Although, it may have looked easier than it was for the Atlanta-born musician: "Oh, y'all testing me," he said jokingly. 

The-Dream slowed it down with the moodier Love vs. Money album cut "Fancy," then dug into the pop-funk jam "Fast Car" and the bouncy "Walkin' On The Moon." He takes fans on a ride through his past sexual exploits on the classic "I Luv Your Girl," and closes on a fiery note with the "Rockin' That S—." While even he acknowledged that his set wasn't perfect, it left fans hoping to see more from the artist soon. 

Smino Rocked Out With His Philly "Kousins"

Despite somewhat of a "niche" or cult-like following, Smino galvanized music lovers from all corners to the Presser Stage. The St. Louis-bred neo-soul rapper played silky jams like "No L's" and "Pro Freak" from 2022's Luv 4 Rent , then dove into the sultry records from his earlier projects.

"Klink" set the tone for the amplified showcase, with fans dancing in their seats and through the aisles. His day-one fans — or "kousins," as he lovingly refers to them — joined him on songs like the head-bopping "Z4L," and crooned across the amphitheater on the impassioned "I Deserve." 

Under Smino's musical guidance, the crowd followed without a hitch anywhere in the performance. It further proved how magnetic the "Netflix & Dusse" artist is live, and how extensive his reach has become since his 2017 debut, blkswn.

Nas Took Fans Down Memory Lane

The New York and Philadelphia connection was undeniable Saturday, as legendary Queensbridge MC Nas forged the two distinctive cities for a performance that harnessed an "Illadelph State of Mind."

The "I Gave You Power" rapper played his first show in Philadelphia as a teenager, when he only had one verse under his belt: Main Source's 1991 song "Live at the BBQ." Back then, Nas admitted to underplaying the city's influence, but he knew then what he knows now — "I had to step my s— up." And he did.

The rapper played iconic songs like "Life's a B–" and "Represent" from his landmark debut Illmatic , which celebrated 30 years back in April. He even brought out Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah to add to the lyrical onslaught, and played records like "Oochie Wally" and "You Owe Me" to enliven his female fans.

Sexyy Red Incited A Twerk Fest

Hot-ticket rapper Sexyy Red arrived on the Presser Stage with a message: "Make America Sexyy Again." And as soon as Madam Sexyy arrived, she ignited a riot throughout the TD Pavilion aisles. Twerkers clung onto friends and grasped nearby railings to dance to strip club joints like "Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)" and "Hood Rats."

Red matched the energy and BPM-attuned twerks from her fans, which only intensified as her lyrics grew more explicit. Sexyy encouraged all of the antics with a middle finger to the sky, her tongue out, and her daring lyrics filling the air. Songs like "SkeeYee" and "Pound Town" added to the nonstop action, leaving fans in a hot sweat — and with their inner sexyy fully unlocked.

Jill Scott Delivered Some Homegrown Magic

To close out night one, the Roots Picnic crowd congregated at the Park Stage for a glimpse of Philadelphia's native child, Jill Scott. The famed soulstress swooned with her fiery voice and neo-soul classics like "A Long Walk" and "The Way." Fans swayed their hips and sang to the night sky as Scott sprinkled her musical magic.

Scott, wrapped up in warm, sapphire-toned garments, was welcomed to the stage by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. The newly elected official rallied the audience for a "Philly nostalgic" evening, and the GRAMMY-winning icon delivered a soaring performance that mirrored her vocal hero, Kathleen Battle. "Philadelphia, you have all of my love," Scott gushed. "I'm meant to be here tonight at this Roots Picnic."

"Jilly from Philly" invited some of the city's finest MCs to the stage for the jam session. Black Thought rapped along her side for The Roots' "You Got Me," and Tierra Whack stepped in for the premiere of her and Scott's unreleased rap song, a booming ode to North Philly. 

Fantasia & Tasha Cobbs Leonard Brought Electrifying Energy

Led by the musical maestro Adam Blackstone , singers Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Fantasia set the warmness of Sunday service and their Southern flare with a "Legacy Experience." And as the title of the performance suggests, their fiery passion was a thread of musical mastery.

As fans danced across the lawn, it was just as much a moment of worship as it was a soulful jam — and only the dynamic voices of the two Southern acts could do the job. "Aren't y'all glad I took y'all there this Sunday," Blackstone said.

The sanctity of Tasha Cobbs Leonard's vocals was most potent on "Put A Praise On It," and Fantasia's power brought the house down even further with classics like "Free Yourself" and "When I See U."

"I wasn't supposed to come up here and cut. I'm trying to be cute," Fantasia joked after removing her shoes on stage. The North Carolina native's lips quivered and her hands shook in excitement, as she continued to uplift the audience — fittingly closing with a roaring rendition of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary."

Babyface Reminded Of His Icon Status

There are few artists who could dedicate a full set to their own records, or the hits they've penned for other musicians. And if you don't know how special that is, Babyface won't hesitate to remind you. "I wrote this back in 1987," he said before singing the Whispers ' "Rock Steady."

Throughout the legendary R&B singer's 45-minute set, he switched between his timeless records like "Every Time I Close My Eyes" and "Keeps on Fallin'," and those shared by the very artists he's inspired — among them, Bobby Brown 's "Don't Be Cruel" and "Every Little Step," 

Fans across several generations gathered to enjoy the classic jams. There was a look of awe in their eyes, as they marveled at the work and memories Babyface has created over more than four decades. 

André 3000 Offered Layers Of Creativity

Speculation over what André 3000 would bring to his Sunday night set was the buzz all weekend. Fans weren't sure if they were going to hear the "old André," or the one blowing grandiose tones from a flute on his solo debut, 2023's New Blue Sun .

The former Outkast musician went for the latter, and while some fans were dismayed by the lack of bars, hundreds stayed for the highly rhythmic set. "Welcome to New Blue Sun live," André said. The majestic chimes and flowy notes of his performance reflect a new creative outlook, and as the performance went on, there was a cloud of coolness that loomed over the amphitheater.

His artistic approach is new to many fans, but he never stopped showcasing the personality they have grown to love. After delivering a message in an indistinguishable language, he panned to the crowd with a look of deep thought and said, "I just want y'all to know, I made all that s— up." It's the kind of humor fans have admired from him for decades, and moments like those are one of many reasons they stayed to watch the nuances of the MC's set.

Lil Wayne & The Roots Gave New Orleans Its Magnolias

The sound of jazz trombones and the gleam of Mardi Gras colors transported West Philly to the bustling streets of New Orleans for the closing set of Roots Picnic 2024. The ode to the Big Easy featured natives like Lloyd, PJ Morton and the marvelous Trombone Shorty , all of whom helped deliver a celebratory tribute that matched the city's vibrance.

Lloyd floated to the stage singing The Roots' "Break You Off," and delved into his own catalog with "Get It Shawty" and "You." Morton soon followed with a soulful run of his R&B records, including "The Sweetest Thing" and "Please Be Good."

With anticipation on full tilt, Black Thought welcomed the festival closer to the stage with a message: "It's only right if Philly pays homage to New Orleans that we bring out Lil Wayne." And right on cue, Wayne drew a wave of cheers as he began "Mr. Carter."

Wayne strung together his biggest Billboard-charting and street hits, including "Uproar," "Hustler's Muzik" and "Fireman." The performance was a rousing cap-off to the weekend — and it clearly meant a lot to the rapper to rep his city in such grand fashion.

"This is a dream come true," Wayne said. "It's a motherf–ing honor."

After Beyoncé introduced Shaboozey to a global audience via 'COWBOY CARTER,' his genre-shattering third album arrives on the wings of his own international smash, "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" and makes a declaration: 'Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going.'

The last two months have been monumental for Shaboozey. On March 29, Beyoncé fans around the world embraced his two guest collaborations on her COWBOY CARTER album, "SPAGHETTII" and "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN'" — and they were instantly interested in what else the Nigerian-American singer had to offer. According to his label, EMPIRE, Spotify listens of Shaboozey's music (including his first two albums, 2018's Lady Wrangler and 2022's Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die ) rose by 1000 percent after COWBOY CARTER dropped.

Six weeks later, his growing fandom sent his breakthrough single, "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country chart — ironically, dethroning Queen Bey's "Texas Hold 'Em" in the process. The song instantly proved to have crossover appeal, also peaking at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, along with reaching the top spot on pop charts in Australia, Canada, Norway, and Sweden.

With his third album, Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going, the man born Collins Chibueze is eager for audiences new and old to get a deeper look into his ever-evolving artistry, which he's been honing for more than a decade. He leans into country and the soundtrack of the open road on "Highway" and "Vegas," while also tapping into his talent as an MC on "Drink Don't Need No Mix" with Texas rapper BigXthaPlug. He displays a softer side, too, with tracks like "My Fault," an apologetic and pleading country ballad performed with Noah Cyrus , and "Steal Her From Me," which finds Shaboozey smoldering with his own Southern slow jam.

Shaboozey's massive global recognition may be fresh, but he's here to remind listeners that he's not a new artist. In a candid interview with GRAMMY.com, the singer discusses how he's put in a decade of hard work in order to appear to be an overnight success.

You've topped the country charts as well as pop charts around the world. Do you think we are witnessing a more welcoming era in country music right now?

I think it's definitely a lot more welcoming. All these genres of music now, just because of the internet age and the access to information — like, now I can go watch Tubi, which has thousands of Western movies, and then Spotify, I can jump from listening to a Townes Van Zandt album or a Leonard Cohen album, and then I can go play Future , you know what I mean?

And then I can jump from them, and go listen to The Marías, who are friends of mine. I can listen to some indie rock music, and then I can listen to some Fred again.. or something like that. So having all that at your fingertips, I think, it's allowed for some interesting combinations in all genres of music. I think we're the generation of paint splatter! I do think it is very welcoming. As artists we are able to connect. We can have our own micro communities. There's not just one way to connect with people now, there are so many other ways. It's different out there now, it's really different.

You're releasing your second album with EMPIRE — how has the company helped you to develop?

EMPIRE has been super awesome. I was signed to Republic for a while, for a year or two, and I saw some article where it talked about Universal partnering with EMPIRE to handle some distribution stuff. I remember talking to my manager at the time, and being like, "We should go there!"

Major labels can get pretty cluttered. Sometimes they just don't have the bandwidth to develop acts that aren't going to take off in a couple weeks or a month or a quarter. They have these quarterlies they have to meet.

So for an artist like me, who is — a lot of people like to describe me as disruptive. It's weird to describe yourself as that. I'm just being me, and people are like, "That's disruptive." But for someone like me, who's like that, it's very important for me to be innovative and push things, and change the way people consume.

I never came in the game wanting to be stereotypical, or just your usual artist. I came in just trying to be like, Man, I love art. I love being creative and that's what I am. Sometimes that's hard to package to everyone. It's like, what is it? For major labels, sometimes, they love to be like, this is pop, this is country, this is just that.

And so for EMPIRE to bring me into what they had going on, and to stick with me within these three or four years I've been with them, knowing that there has been a lot of ups and downs. There've been a lot of [times] that we thought were going to do something that [we] didn't. Because it's a process with artistry, it doesn't happen overnight. They say it takes 10 years to have an overnight success, and it's true.

Your new album flows so well. Was it written to be taken in as one complete piece?

I'm a lover of a concept album. I love film, I love stories, I love payoffs. I love the hero's journey, they call it.

There is a way to tell a story in a three-act structure. And within those structures you have your rising action, you have your hero's call to action. They lead the world, you have your climax, and then you have, was the hero changed? Did they get the thing they were looking for at the end of it?

I'm a huge fan of film, huge on concepts, world building. I want something to feel immersive, so arrangement is big to me.

But before, I used to be super picky about [ensuring that] everything needs to connect, and I had to learn to let that go and just know that that's a part of me as an artist. As I create, I'm telling these stories naturally, so I stopped being too hard on myself about things needing to connect because that would cripple me at certain points. But now, again, I'm just learning how to let it go, and let it come naturally. It's cool to see that people are still saying with this project that there's still a concept there. And I'm like, oh, there is still a concept there. There is still a story.

My last project [ Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die ] was super inspired by western films. Old western films, like, spaghetti westerns, and the whole nature of outlaw, just like period piece western culture. So I was huge on everything needing to feel like it was period. It needed to feel like this 1800s western, and this Black outlaw and his gang.

Obviously, I wanted the [visual] content to reflect that. And then you're realizing…   Wait, every video shoot I'm having to rent western wardrobe and chaps? It's a lot to do all the time, you know? It was a commitment… and I don't wear that everyday, so it wasn't really 100 percent being authentically myself in that moment. It was like, I'm creating a character and this character is separate from me.

That's hard to do all the time. Especially when it's a period piece in the 1800s and you're in 2024. So at some point I was like, hey, I want this project to be more like, I can put something on in my closet and go shoot some content, versus having to find a western town, or a world or environment that fits the 1800s.

Do you think that Beyoncé was inspired by that album?

I definitely think so. I think that's what was cool about her project, and her entry into country. I saw a lot of similarities between the things that inspired us.

What I love about country is, I really love the old stuff that really does play into the old West, the Wild West — and I saw that Beyoncé, she would talk about little things like that, too. Like the outlaws, hangmen and six shooters, and stuff like that. So you can see that she's really inspired by that stuff as well. I was told by her team that she would definitely watch a lot of old Western films through the process of doing her project.

How has the Beyhive treated you since you appeared on COWBOY CARTER ?

I love that community. Seriously, that community, they've been extremely supportive from what I've seen, because Beyoncé's message has been about shining light on people that may have been overlooked. So they definitely carry out the mission of supporting the people that Beyoncé supports. They've been amazing.

I would like to say that early on with "Bar Song," they were definitely pre-saving it, they were sharing it as much as they could on Twitter, and there were a lot of posts that I was making that were getting high viewership. You could tell that there were a lot of impressions before the "Bar Song" came out. So they're great.

Did you ever think you'd be on an album with Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton ?

I hoped for those things when I was creating my album. I wanted to see more hip-hop artists collaborating with people like that. I was always like, man, if I was given a $10 million budget to make a project, I'd get Willie Nelson or Hank Williams Jr. or someone like that to jump on it. I want to see something like that. As someone whose parents grew up in Nigeria, what do you think of the global breakthrough of Nigerian artists like Burna Boy and Wizkid ?

It's amazing to see. Afrobeat is definitely universal now, global like that. I think Wizkid was one of the pioneers of getting that music across the water in such a way. Burna Boy, too — if you check out his aesthetic, it's influenced by a lot of different things. He's not just wearing traditional Nigerian garments, he's wearing designer stuff, and he's got the jewelry pieces and Cartier. It's presented in a way that that style of music wasn't really represented [before] in that sense.

I lived in Nigeria for a year or two, and when I was there, there was no wifi or the internet. Now I go back and my cousins are on Netflix and on Instagram and all these places. So yeah, everything is spreading out. But as far as Afrobeat, I mean, that music is incredible, the production. It's so infectious when you hear it, but it's cool to see people of Nigerian descent, me as well, having our reach everywhere.

Davido , he reached out to me a couple days ago, he's like, "I need you to get on this record." There's a lot of Nigerian artists now that are hitting me up, and are like, "Hey, will you jump on this, will you jump on that?" I'm hearing some of those guys are trying to get into country music. It's cool to kind of have my own Burna Boy moment right now!

The new album sounds like you really worked on developing your voice as an instrument, with more singing than rapping. Is that a fair assumption?

Yeah. Being from Virginia, we didn't have those outlets to kind of hone in on. I didn't have a vocal coach, or a songwriting program, or anything like that. We kind of had to figure it out on our own.

I think that's why you have so many artists that come from Virginia where they're all very eclectic, they all have this kind of rawness to them. Missy Elliott, Timbaland , Pharrell , even Tommy Richman. He's got that song going crazy viral too. You know the song, the "Million Dollar Baby" song. It's a guy singing falsetto [like] Bee Gees over a hip-hop beat. I'm like, where did you learn to structure a song like this?

This album was that project for me. My manager here [told me] it's working, because I'm learning how to arrange music and write songs that have a broader appeal, but I didn't know that at the time. We were just having fun, just learning how to do it with whatever resources we had. It can get kind of funky.

I think my first project was very funky, and then this one was [made after] 10 years of being in it. You start to figure it out a little bit more.

10 Can't-Miss Acts At Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024: Amaarae, Ethel Cain, Troye Sivan & More

Barcelona's Primavera Sound shines as a star-studded spectacle every year, but the famed international festival's 2024 lineup is especially lively. Get to know 10 acts you won't want to miss at Parc del Fòrum from May 29 to June 2.

Since 2001, Primavera Sound has served as Barcelona's kickoff to summer. And with a stacked lineup chock full of effervescent acts for its 2024 iteration, this year's fest will certainly get the feel-good, warm-weather vibes rolling.

Phoenix starts the party with pop rock and new wave on May 29, setting the stage for fellow headliners Pulp, Vampire Weekend , and Justice on May 30. Lana Del Rey , The National , and Disclosure will make everyone's Friday night on May 31. Singaporean musician yeule is pioneering the ambient and glitch pop genres one song at a time. Born Nat Ćmiel, their stage name is based on a video game character, Paddra Nsu-Yeul, which speaks to their artistic steps in and out of reality. yeule's musical (and fashion) aesthetic is defined by the cyberworld, marked by futuristic, alternative styles that bewitchingly break norms.

Though they started out as a bedroom producer, yeule's more recent creative endeavors — like their invigorating 2022 album, softscars — have been more collaborative, adding a new layer of inspiration and beauty to their work. With influences ranging from Avril Lavigne to Radiohead , yeule's Primavera set will be ideal for living out all of your emo nostalgic fantasies.

Get ready to scream with Deftones at Primavera. Winning their first GRAMMY back in 2001, the alternative metal band is still rocking out 20-plus years later — and making waves in this festival lineup. While Primavera tends to be led by various electronic and pop acts, Deftones is uniquely ushering punk to the festival's frontlines.

Banding together in 1988 in Sacramento, Deftones is known for their progressive experimentation within metal and rock, often dipping into psychedelia, post-punk, trip hop. Headed by lead vocalist Chino Moreno , the band's hardcore sound is unabashedly raw, original and heavy, continuing to evolve expansively with the metal genre.

Paving the way for contemporary heavy metal over the years, Deftones is a defiant act you won't want to miss at a major stage at Primavera Sound.

Troye Sivan

Performing: may 31, santander stage.

Ready to feel the rush? Troye Sivan certainly is.

The Australian pop star is making Primavera an early stop in his tour for Something To Give Each Other , his latest album featuring jubilant singles like "Rush" and "Got Me Started." Once his European tour wraps in Birmingham, England at the tail end of June, he'll be headlining the Sweat Tour with fellow headliner Charli XCX — who coincidentally will be performing at Primavera the next day on June 1.

From the electropop seedlings on his 2015 debut, Blue Neighborhood , to the full-fledged forlorn beauty of his 2020 EP, In A Dream , Sivan's artistry has evolved significantly in the last decade. Today, his music is its most freeing yet, and there's no doubt it'll be glorious (and sweaty) on the Primavera stage.

UK-based Nigerian artist Obongjayar 's musical style is nearly indescribable. Interlacing Afrobeat, spoken word, and EDM, all of his songs are distinctly tinged with a signature, soulful vibrance, and it'll be sensational to see how Obongjayar takes his pensive profundity to fill the Primavera stage.

Though he might be best known for the Fred again.. collaboration "adore u" (which samples his track "I Wish It Was Me"), Obongjayar's special sound effortlessly meshes with everyone he works with. From "If You Say" with Sarz, to "Point and Kill" with Little Simz , to "Protein" with Jeshi, it would be fair to call Obongjayar a chameleon — except instead of blending in, he's standing out.

There's no better word to describe Ethel Cain 's music than transcendent.

A master of gothic indie rock, Cain stitches together uncanny Americana and lovelorn nostalgia into a radiant, sensory experience. Her debut album, 2022's Preacher's Daughter , is divine and sometimes disturbing, but its ambience live sends audiences into an impossibly satisfying trance.

Whether you're listening to the enchanting slow burn of "A House In Nebraska" or the eerie roar of "American Teenager," both Cain's storytelling and live performance are infallibly spine-chilling — do yourself a favor and don't miss Cain's hauntingly beautiful set at Primavera.

BADBADNOTGOOD

Looking for a band that combines jazz styles with hip-hop production? Look no further than BADBADNOTGOOD , an innovative Canadian instrumental band.

After meeting at a Toronto jazz program in 2010, the three-piece band bonded over their hip-hop music appreciation, and the rest is history. Since then, BADBADNOTGOOD (which now features Leland Whitty in place of original member Matthew Tavares) has released five studio albums — fittingly, including covers of hip-hop songs with jazz interpretations. The group has also worked with Kendrick Lamar , Tyler, The Creator , Thundercat , and many more notable artists.

The band's collaborative production and remixing has earned them two GRAMMY wins and five total nominations , and there's no question BADBADNOTGOOD's set will put a spell on Barcelona.

Electronica is Arca 's playground, and the pioneering producer's set at Primavera is sure to craft a whole new world. Dynamism defines the Venezuelan musician's shape-shifting art; through its avant-garde fusion of reggaeton, ambient techno, and dark electronica, her music is bursting with vigor.

Arca's music often discusses themes of gender identity and sexuality, and her views of queerness center around harmony and inclusion, which reflect in her pristine tracks "Nonbinary" and "Machote" on her GRAMMY-nominated album KiCk i . Having released 10 albums since 2006; worked with artists like Rosalía , Björk , and the late SOPHIE ; and even opened for Beyoncé 's Renaissance World Tour , Arca brings immeasurable experience to Barcelona.

The producer's music naturally begs to be heard live — it's meant to sweat to and be danced to, and Arca's Primavera set will embody true electronic extravagance.

ATARASHII GAKKO!

Performing: june 1, cupra stage.

This rising Japanese girl group's powerful sound easily warrants a stage name in all caps and with an exclamation point.

Fresh off their U.S. television debut on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," ATARASHII GAKKO! is ready to tackle the Primavera Sound stage with their engaging J-pop that integrates elements of hip-hop, rock, and jazz. Intrepid and commanding, their live performance features synchronized dancing, matching sailor school uniforms, and occasionally a marching band.

The quartet's upcoming world tour has a handful of sold-out dates. They've already conquered crowds at Coachella and Head in the Clouds — and there's no doubt that ATARASHII GAKKO! will bring their best to Barcelona.

Ama Serwah Genfi — better known as Amaarae — is an alté trailblazer. Raised between Atlanta and Accra, Ghana, the singer crafts mercurial music that is both introspective and stylish, and destined to be performed for vast audiences.

From her 2017 EP, Passionfruit Summers , to her 2023 album, Fountain Baby , it's easy to be mesmerized by her distinct, eccentric soprano and overflowing confidence. Her critically acclaimed "Sad Girlz Luv Money" (featuring Molly and Kali Uchis ) charted globally in 2021, and just last year, she became the first Ghanaian American to perform an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Amaarae's live performances bring her blend of R&B, pop, and afrobeats to a new level, and she's ready to introduce her infectious global beats to Primavera.

Bikini Kill

Performing: june 1, pull&bear stage.

Famed pioneers of the riot grrrl movement in the '90s, Bikini Kill is bringing punk fun (and rage) to the Primavera stage.

Influencing alternative stars like Sleater-Kinney , Pussy Riot , and The Linda Lindas , it's no question that the iconic American band has inspired the next generation, whether that be through their music or activism. From "Rebel Girl" to "Feels Blind" to "I Like F—ing," Bikini Kill's beautifully irate music calls for female solidarity and empowerment still resonate with listeners today.

Though the band broke up in 1997, they reunited in 2019 and have since been touring together — and now, Primavera offers a special chance to see another inspiring moment from the revolutionary rockers.

Madness Frontman Suggs Talks New Album, First U.S. Tour & Getting Kicked Off "Top Of The Pops" — Four Times

Ahead of their appearance at Las Vegas' Punk Rock Bowling fest and first American shows in 10 years, Madness' lead singer Suggs details the band's hit-filled history, 2023 album and coming up Two Tone.

American audiences may only know "Our House," but there’s much more to Madness than their lone Stateside mega-hit.

Prior to their 1982 smash, the English band enjoyed immense commercial success in their home country. Between 1979 and 1981, Madness sent nine consecutive singles into the Top 10 of the UK Official Singles Chart. 

"It was a few years of hard work and all of a sudden, we were the most successful band in England," says Madness frontman Suggs (born Graham McPherson), chatting from London. "That happened because people f—ikn’ dug the tunes we made."

Madness also helped bring ska to the masses. Alongside comrades like the Specials, the London septet were leaders of the late ‘70s British ska boom, which combined Jamaican rhythms with punk swagger, and united Black and white working-class kids. Among their hits from this era were "One Step Beyond" (1979),  "Baggy Trousers" (1980) and "House of Fun" (1982). 

With their street-savvy fashions and Monty Python -style music videos (which caught the eye of Honda and led to a series of advertisements in the early '80s), Madness have been  fixtures in UK culture and beyond for over 40 years. They endured so strongly that their 13th LP, 2023’s Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est la Vie , hit No. 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart — their first studio album to reach the summit.

Beginning May 22, Madness will tour the U.S. for the first time in 10 years, including a headline slot at Las Vegas’ Punk Rock Bowling festival , alongside Devo and Descendents.

On the phone, Suggs is chatty and jovial, quick to break into song or pull a good story from his band’s topsy-turvy history. Madness once turned down a chance to play Madison Square Garden as "Our House" surged in 1983. (They’d already performed on "SNL" and "Our House" was an MTV staple.) Madness could have been a much bigger band in America. But after years of non-stop touring and promotion in the UK, Madness was nearing its breaking point. "We had f—in’ 20 hits and we were all getting a bit tired," Suggs remembers. "I see the Pretenders , 18 months touring America! So, we never really continued." In 1986, Madness went their separate ways. 

A decade later, ska was enjoying a moment in the sun in America as groups like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, No Doubt and Reel Big Fish dominated airwaves during the genre's "third wave." Over in the UK, a rejuvenated Madness was enjoying its elder statesman status, drawing massive festival crowds since reuniting in 1992. No Doubt frequently cited Madness as an inspiration and even tapped keyboardist Mike Barson to play on one of their songs . And the fire still burns. At Coachella 2024 , No Doubt covered Madness’ rendition of "One Step Beyond, " itself a cover of a ‘60s classic by Jamaican ska legend Prince Buster. 

Madness — whose current lineup also includes guitarist Chrissy Boy, saxophonist Lee Thompson, bassist Mark Bedford, and drummer Woody — has earned its place in rock history. Their classics still bring crowds to a frenzy and, as their latest album proves, fans are still enthralled by what Suggs and company have to say.

GRAMMY.com recently caught up with the Madness singer for a career-spanning swath of topics: crafting tunes in the modern day, some sage advice he got from Clash frontman Joe Strummer , why Madness kept getting banned from "Top of the Pops," and much more. 

Was there a moment you realized "Our House" was going to be a much bigger song than your previous hits?

When it was a hit in America, that was definitely an indication. And that’s the alchemy of music — you just don’t know when you’re doing it at the time. I remember we were rehearsing, when the song started… our bass player Mark [Bedford] goes [ hums "Our House" intro ], dum-dum, dum-dum-de-dum-dum… There wasn’t a chorus at the time, so our producer Clive [Langer], just sang, "Our house, in the middle of the street," just joking. 

But without that, it wouldn’t have been the hit that it is. [Songs] are like babies. You have them, you bring them up, and then they go out into the world, and you don’t know where they’re gonna go. It’s not up to you. It’s up to other people to decide if they like them or not. 

We’d been in America for a month and suddenly "Our House" was a massive hit. We’d been offered to play Madison Square Garden but we were just tired and wanted to go home. We all had kids. We didn’t do a few gigs [that] we were offered in America that might have changed the situation. 

We [weren't] arrogant — but we were a bit. And we were so popular in England. We were making a very good living; we didn’t really have to go anywhere anymore. We just decided that it was kind of too late to try and break — whatever that word means — America. It was a great hit, it was fantastic, but that was kind of it.

What do you remember from the first time Madness toured the States?

It was 1979 or so… It was a really big, eye-opening experience. There were seven [of us] in the band, so probably 10 of our friends [including crew]. We were like a party on the road, we didn’t really need anyone else’s company. Coming over the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing New York, you know what I mean? When you come from London — I mean, London isn’t small — but you don’t compare it to New York. 

And then L.A. and all the palm trees. I remember we played at Whisky a Go Go. We did two shows a night: one at 11 and one at 2 in the morning — my suit was still wet. 

It was kind of off because [L.A.] was still catching up with punk. You had the Dead Kennedys , Black Flag, X. People were doing all this mad punk dancing and the worm or whatever, writhing about on the floor. We’d sort of done that in London; we’d had the Sex Pistols and the Clash. We were into something else, which was dancing, and playing music by Black origin. We weren’t just thrashing about and spitting at each other. But that kind of thing was still going on, which made it a bit difficult for us because a lot of the places we were playing were really punk. And we weren’t punk. We were over that.

By the time "Our House" came around in '82, I’d think America was starting to catch up.

By then you had Blondie , the CBGB scene, Talking Heads , and it started to make more sense to us. With post-punk, there were grooves suddenly. It was offbeat, but it wasn’t anger. 

When Madness first started playing, what were the crowds like?

It was just our friends. We started off in a pub in Camden Town, where we were living. We got a residency, every Wednesday night. First week, there’d be 10 people. Second week, 30, 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, and then two months later, we had a queue around the block. The music we were playing, which was ska, and the clothes we were wearing was kinda different than everybody else around. 

Then we got a gig supporting the Specials in a pub in West London. They sort of appeared out of nowhere — Coventry — which is quite a long way from London. And they were wearing the same clothes as us, playing the same kind of music. I remember [Specials singer] Neville [Staple] was shooting holes in the ceiling with a starting pistol and I just thought, Crikey, these are kooks . We might be onto something . I remember Johnny Rotten getting out of a cab and going, "Are you for real?" And these kids went, "Yeah, you f—ing arse." It was the transition of power. It wasn't that long: ‘77, punk. ‘78, us. And suddenly you got the Specials, the Beat, the Selecter. Two-tone became this massive phenomenon in London. So we went on tour with them: the Specials, Selecter, Beat. 

I remember being with Joe Strummer from the Clash and I was walking through a playground with him. I can’t remember where we were going, but all the kids were singing "Baggy Trousers" on the swings. And I’m going, "I want to be cool, I don’t want school kids." And he went, "No, you’ve got it wrong, mate. You want to have young kids, that’s the best thing that can happen. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the young people you want to connect with." 

When you’ve got pretty naive school kids singing your songs, you’ve definitely done something you should be proud of. 

What was Camden Town like when you were growing up there?

It was rough, man. You know, people now in London are getting more and more scared, lot of knives flyin’ and gangs, but it was the same. You lived in a certain area and you would be very wary of another area across the road because you could be stabbed, shot. The greatest thing was the music. 

Every pub had a stage and there’d be music on every night. In that period, punk was still there, then you got goth, you got psychobilly, rockabilly, then you got new romantic. Every pub you went to was something going on. Different scenes, all these kids. 

The pride I have [as one of] these working class kids. There’s no money, you just tried: this is what you’re gonna wear, and this is what you’re into. And suddenly a whole scene started. It was totally organic and individual. It wasn’t trend sections, fashion magazines; it was just kids doing what they want.

Where you grew up, what were race relations like?

They were difficult. And we got caught up in that, unfortunately, because we were all white… Although our original drummer was Black, but he left because we were too s—. Like I said, there was all these different scenes and the scene we were into was ska and reggae. And you had this whole culture — from the mods to the skinheads to the suedeheads in the late ‘60s and ‘70s — which was all about fashion and listening to that music, but it got usurped by these [racist] skinheads who started to take it the other way.

We’d be playing concerts and there’d be all sorts of racism going on and we’d have to deal with it in our own way. I remember jumping into the audience a few times and getting beaten up. It went away, fortunately. Only a couple years: probably ‘78, ‘79 maybe. Even the Specials were getting it, and they had Black people in their own group. They’d get people f—ing sieg heiling. It’s a fucking long story. 

What we had here was football hooliganism, which has now become very popular in Italy, France, and Germany. It’s one of our greatest exports. [ Laughs. ] It was easier for them to come to rock concerts than football matches, where there were loads of police. 

How did the commercial success first come?

By being really good. People saw what we’d done. It was a few years of hard work and all of a sudden, we were the most successful band in England. That happened because people f—in’ dug the tunes we made. Then we split up in 1985 and I think we were still the most successful band of the ‘80s… in England. Ha ha! 

"The Prince" on 2 Tone [Records] got to No. 16, then we had [our debut album] One Step Beyond get to No. 2, then we had "House of Fun" [reach No. 1]. We just had hit after hit, you tell me. 

Music videos played a big role in Madness' success, right?

That had just started. This was before MTV. We went to Stiff Records [in 1979]. We’d been on 2 Tone [Records], but we decided we wanted to spread our wings and Stiff had Elvis Costello , Ian Dury, Kirsty MacColl, the Damned. Dave Robinson, who ran that label, also saw the potential that we were all quite theatrical, so we started making videos. 

[Television program] "Top of the Pops" had 20 million viewers; it only was allowed one promo pop video, and we were always the one that they showed. When we did "Baggy Trousers," there was a feeling in the air. People would talk about our videos, and it definitely added to the potency of what we were doing. 

The intellectual types and the tastemakers, the people who make and break you, just thought we were a flash in the pan joke, and the music got slightly sidelined. Only recently we’ve had much better reviews of our history. We put a lot of effort into the music [and] those videos. 

There’s so much going on in those songs, musically, if you really listen.

We’d have friends, musicians, play covers and they’d go, "We can’t play your songs, it’s too complicated." We had seven of us, all wrote songs, so we were in constant competition with each other. You couldn’t just go, "Mine’s the best." You had to actually write the best song. 

So many bands with two or three songwriters are fighting all the time, or just break up. How did Madness do it with so many?

Tolerance is the main thing. The underlying reason is we were friends from when we were at school. We were famous around our way. It was a gang called the Aldenham Glamour Boys, and to be in or amongst them, you were famous. So by the time we got the band going, we weren’t really bothered by other people’s impressions of us. 

On "Top of the Pops," we got banned four times. The girl who used to do our promotions said, "Do you realize people would give their right arm to be on this?" And I said, "The thing is, we’re just not right arm-giving people."

What were the four things you got banned from "Top of the Pops" for?

The first time was when one of our friend’s brothers was in prison and he held up a sign saying, "This is for prisoner number 44224022." That wasn’t allowed. The second time, we got on a lift with this dance troupe and the lift plummeted into the basement because there were too many of us. The third time, Lee [Thompson], our saxophone player, had a t-shirt that said, "I need the BBC" and then he had another t-shirt underneath that said, "Like a hole in the head." And I can’t remember what the fourth one was.  

When America had its brief ska moment in the ‘90s, did Madness get any new attention?

I don’t think so, no, because we had accepted that it was too late. It was great to see, all the Americans, Mighty Mighty Bosstones or whoever checking us. But we weren’t going to go back. If it had been 20 years earlier, it would have helped. But it was too late, like, "Who are these old farts?" [ Laughs. ]

When Madness got back together in the ‘90s, what was that like?

Vince Power, who just passed away, a great promoter, used to do this Irish festival, Fleadh, in North London. We all used to go. And he says, "When’s the last time you played?" And I said, "Well, probably about six years ago." And he said, "Why don’t you do a one-off comeback?" 

So we did Madstock! in 1992. We didn’t know if anyone was going to turn up. 35,000 people turned up. So we put on another one. And 70,000 people turned up. There was an earthquake , 4.5 on the Richter scale, people were jumping up and down. And they had to evacuate people out of their houses, flats, and apartments because of the earthquake that we’d created. We put out a greatest hits album, it goes to No. 1, sold 2 million copies, blah, blah, blah… And we’ve been going longer now on this bit than we did on that first bit. 

It’s really interesting to hear how you’ve been part of rock music through so many eras.

I’ve just done a couple songs with Paul Weller , he’s a friend of mine from the old days. We were working on a tune and I went, "Look Paul, it’s only music." And he said, "No, it f—ing isn’t." [ Laughs. ] And it’s true innit? We made a lot of f—ing good pop music. It’s something I’m very proud of. It’s the soundtrack of our lives. When you hear a tune, you remember exactly where you were. 

When you wrote the lyrics for the new album, Theatre of the Absurd , what was on your mind?

We all write. We had 40 songs. During the lockdown, for that two years, the worst way to communicate is email. People were losing their minds. So I thought we were going to fall out and never speak to each other… And we made a record I think is good. I mean, [it went] No. 1 in England; that’s the first number one [studio] album we ever had. 

I wrote the first song on the album, "Theatre of the Absurd." I was just sitting on my own, stuck, and I was imagining being in some old theater with all the doors locked, not being able to get out. Theatre of the Absurd was a French artistic [concept]  where things became so absurd, it was all gobbledygook. They just made up words. 

I’m really fortunate. This band of mine, they're a dysfunctional family, it’s very difficult to be in. But it’s like the philosophers the Eagles once said, "You can check out any time you like, but you can never f—in’ leave." 

But I’m looking forward to playing America. The fella from "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Larry David wants to introduce us. 

Are you gonna do that?

You know, Helen Mirren did a bit on our new album, [so did] Martin Freeman, actors from England. Getting someone from America who likes us, I can’t see the problem with that. We shall see.

Predicting Lions' 2024 All-Pro Selections

• Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions were well-represented on the Associated Press' All-Pro team last season, with a total of five players receiving honors on either the first or second teams.

Penei Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown were first-team honorees, while Sam LaPorta, Frank Ragnow and Jalen Reeves-Maybin earned second-team honors.

With the team set to be one of the top contenders for the ultimate prize this upcoming season, a successful campaign will likely lead to multiple players being recognized once again.

Here are the Lions ' top contenders to earn All-Pro honors in 2024.

WR Amon-Ra St. Brown

St. Brown has emerged as one of the best receivers in the league and was rewarded handsomely for his efforts. He was a first-team selection last year and as Jared Goff's top target could very well repeat again in 2024.

What sets St. Brown apart from many of his peers is his insatiable work ethic. With this, it's hard to predict his performance dipping in the slightest as long as he stays healthy. He has improved each and every season early in his career, and as a result should continue to grow in his fourth NFL season.

OT Penei Sewell

Detroit's other first-team selection from a year ago, Sewell has also developed into one of the league's best in his respective position. As far as right tackles go, it's hard to find another player who has the production and ability that Sewell has.

The Oregon product is relentless in the run game and was nearly flawless in pass-protection last season. As he continues to anchor the pass-protection unit, expect him to once again be near the top performers at his position.

DE Aidan Hutchinson

With how deep the league is with talented edge rushers, Hutchinson could have a tough path to earning All-Pro honors. Last year's selections at the position was a 'Who's who' of the league's best defensive talents.

However, Hutchinson could be primed to ascend to that level in his third NFL season. He was unstoppable at the end of last season, which helped him get over double digit sacks after a midseason swoon.

The Michigan product led the league in pressures last season. With an emphasis on finishing those pressures with sacks, Hutchinson could have a monster year and vault himself into the conversation amongst the league's best.

TE Sam LaPorta

After earning second-team recognition last year, LaPorta could be in a position to earn billing on the top team with a strong second campaign. He proved capable of contributing throughout his rookie campaign and set the new record for receptions by a rookie tight end.

LaPorta's top competition at the position will be Travis Kelce and George Kittle, both of whom have had storied careers. However, LaPorta 's play-style is in a similar mold and as a result could make for tough decisions for voters with his performance if he's able to exceed last year's production.

RB Jahmyr Gibbs

With the running back position being devalued in some circles, there is a path for Gibbs to earn All-Pro honors in his second NFL season. He proved capable of handling a workload last year and came up just short of 1,000 yards on the ground.

The Alabama product is explosive and versatile. General manager Brad Holmes has hinted at Gibbs potentially being a bigger part of the passing game next season, which would only add to his All-Pro resume.

If Gibbs can stay healthy and on the field in 2024, there's a legitimate path for him to find his way on an All-Pro team next season.

C Frank Ragnow

The big factor with Ragnow 's All-Pro case will be his health. He's one of the most highly thought of linemen in the league and has been an outstanding piece for the middle of Detroit's offensive line. A mauler in the run game, he's a true tone-setter.

Last year, Ragnow was a second-team selection despite dealing with numerous injuries throughout the year. Jason Kelce, last year's first-team selection, has retired and Ragnow could now be the best active center.

As a result, a healthy season could allow Ragnow to earn top honors in 2024.

QB Jared Goff

If Detroit replicates its offensive success from the past two seasons, Goff should warrant consideration to land on an All-Pro team. He has been among the league's most productive passers each of the last two years and statistically ranked among the best last year.

With a new contract in tow, there's even more motivation as the Lions chase a Super Bowl championship. He has two exceptional weapons in St. Brown and LaPorta , with the potential of a third if Jameson Williams can reach his potential.

LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin

Reeves-Maybin has established himself as one of the league's best special teams players over the last couple of seasons and earned second-team All-Pro honors last year.

He was outstanding on coverage units last year and figures to provide the same presence this season. Detroit committed to him with a two-year deal, and he's capable of replicating his production in this area from a year ago.
