Have you ever heard of the town of hundred towers ? Probably yes, given that in Italy there are many villages which, thanks to their history with roots set in the Middle Age, have deserved this nickname. But there is only one that perfectly mixes its important past with a very rich cultural heritage, especially in the gastronomic field: we are talking about Alba , a town in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont , queen of truffles and chocolate .

The capital of Langhe , as it is defined by many people, is a perfect village to capture the essence of this region between beautiful attractions to visit, delicious food to taste and unmissable events especially in autumn and spring: among these, we highly recommend the International White Truffle Fair, the Donkey Palio, the Flower Festivals and the National Vinum Fair dedicated to the best local wines . Are you already preparing to leave? Let's not waste time and discover with us right away what to see in Alba for a unique experience on your next trip to Piedmont!

What to see in Alba in Piedmont: discover the beauty of the capital of Langhe

What to see in Alba

And here we are, in the evocative setting of Alba , made up of natural landscapes that seem hand-painted by an artist of valuable talent and architectural beauties that perfectly fit into this panorama. We are in the Langhe , of which the town of hundred towers is considered to be the symbolic capital , a wonderful land in Piedmont acknowledged as a Unesco World Heritage Site which we have already had the privilege of visiting on a previous trip to Barolo, a fantastic village South-West of Alba: check it out here !

So, what to see in Alba ? In this article we want to give you some interesting suggestions for admiring the most beautiful attractions of the village and organizing a travel itinerary starting from the main cities in Piedmont. Caressing the flow of the Tanaro river and exploring the region to discover other unique beauties not far from Alba, such as the big red bench of serenity and the Brunate chapel in La Morra or the Barbaresco Tower in the namesake town, it’s time to leave: if everything is ready, let's get started right away!

What to see in Alba in Piedmont: Piazza Risorgimento and the Town Hall

Piazza Risorgimento in Alba

The beating heart of Alba is undoubtedly Piazza Risorgimento , the historical, social and cultural center of the village, an essential stage for anyone visiting the capital of Langhe. If you are wondering what to see in Alba , Piazza Risorgimento is certainly a place to discover where Italian architectural and stylistic beauty emerges with great elegance. Its welcoming atmosphere, made even warmer by the lively color of the buildings that outline the profile of this urban space, is a beautiful calling card for the town of hundred towers: among these the Town Hall stands out, with its pink external walls, its balcony decorated with flags, its clock and its characteristic porticoes but, above all, with its collection of religious frescoes and paintings inside, including a Pietà from the end of the 1300s, a Virgin and Child by Macrino d’Alba dating back to the beginning of the 1500s and an altarpiece with Mary and Child between saints by Mattia Preti from the 1600s.

What if we told you that there is a city under the city? That's it, you understood right: at Piazza Risorgimento, between the Town Hall and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo ( which we will cover soon ), it is possible to explore underground Alba and discover the mysteries and charm of the history of Alba Pompeia while admiring the remains of ancient Roman city, artistic finds and the ruins of some of the medieval towers.

But Piazza Risorgimento, of course, is also a place of entertainment and folklore : right here, in fact, some of the most characteristic events of Alba take place, in particular the evocative historical reinterpretation of the Donkey Palio on the first Sunday of October, a medieval joust to conquer the town flag, and the Flower Festivals between the end of May and the beginning of June, the ideal occasion to celebrate spring by promoting the typical products of the Marca Aleramica, an ancient cultural region that embraces a territory extending from Savona up to Chivasso passing through Langhe and Monferrato .

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the churches of Alba

Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Alba

Staying around Piazza Risorgimento, just outside the Town Hall and looking around, you immediately see another fantastic attraction among the things to see in Alba : the wonderful Cathedral of San Lorenzo , an architectural jewel built between the 1400s and 1500s which mixes with expertise Romanesque and Gothic art, giving visitors and citizens a place of refined beauty, beyond religious faith.

Outside the cathedral appears majestic with its reddish walls, the portico, the three portals, the statues that embellish the facade and the large central rose window. The bell tower, one of the towers of Alba, is also very beautiful and imposing. But the real wonder is experienced inside the church : a large room made up of three large naves, painted like a starry sky with shades of brilliant blue dotted with gold, enriched by two-tone columns with decorated capitals and arches; the side chapels are also very beautiful, three on the right and three on the left, each one preserving wonderful valuable works of sacred art, as well as the altar and its wooden choir dating back to the 1500s with wonderful decorations inlaid directly into the wood.

Among the other churches to visit in Alba we also suggest: the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which houses many medieval and renaissance sacred art pieces; the Church of San Domenico, built between 1200s and 1300s, which today is used mainly as a venue for themed exhibitions and concerts rather than as a place of worship; and the recent Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Moretta, a church founded at the beginning of 1900s but with a distinct and important external aesthetic, which makes it similar to the main cathedral of the town.

The hundred towers of Alba and Palazzo Marro, the “castellaccio”

Alba, town of hundred towers

The nickname of town of hundred towers was certainly a deserved acknowledgment for Alba , which between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance witnessed the rise of many bastions both inside and outside the urban center, as a defensive factor to preserve one of the most important cities in Piedmont, but also and above all as a manifestation of power. Hey, take a look here if you want to discover other unmissable places in this region right away!

But what happened to the hundred towers of Alba? Well, unfortunately time has not been an indulgent judge and has almost completely erased the traces of their existence. In fact, if many have been completely tore down and still others have been shrunk and integrated as environments within new buildings, today there are very few towers left intact and clearly visible: the most important are Sineo Tower , Astesiano Tower and Bonino Tower , all located near Piazza Risorgimento.

Beware, however, because there is what many people consider to be an additional tower: it is Palazzo Marro or Casa Marro, also called the " castellaccio " ("sick castle"), a medieval noble residence with a stark appearance that certainly deserves to be part of your tourist itinerary discovering Alba and its history .

The civic museum of archaeology and natural sciences of Alba

Moving from the heart of the historic centre, let’s now head towards Via Vittorio Emanuele to the civic museum of archaeology and natural sciences of Alba dedicated to the historian and archaeologist Federico Eusebio . The current exhibition space, previously part of the Maddalena convent environment, has been active since 1976 and includes 21 rooms divided into two sections : the archaeological one which collects prehistoric finds dating back to the Neolithic and artefacts from excavations in the Alba area, as well as Roman finds which extensively document the life of ancient Alba Pompeia; and that of natural sciences with exhibitions dedicated to geology, zoology and botany, with particular reference to the local territory.

In Alba there are also other places of great cultural impact that we suggest you to visit once traveling here. Among these: the evocative theater  Teatro Sociale Busca , the high school Liceo Classico Govone among the most historic and important in Piedmont, the exclusive Enological School (there are only 11 in Italy) and the interesting Study Center dedicated to Beppe Fenoglio , one of the most important Italian authors of 1900s coming from the capital of Langhe.

The Alba truffles, an excellence of Italian gastronomy

The Alba truffles

Did you know that Alba is acknowledged by UNESCO as a Creative City for gastronomy ? A further recognition that certainly doesn’t surprise lovers of good food and above all of Italian cuisine, which can boast one of the best ingredients in the world: the Alba truffles , a culinary delicacy from Piedmont.

This precious underground mushroom, known for its intense scent and unique flavor that make every dish awesome, is one of the most iconic symbols of Alba as well as one of the driving factors of the city's economy. In fact, every year the capital of Langhe hosts the Alba International White Truffle Fair , or simply Truffle Fair, a fascinating autumn event (usually between October and November) dedicated to this culinary treasure which attracts lovers of good food from all over the world, eager to taste and buy the most delicious truffles and join a real experience in the magnificent setting of the town of hundred towers.

During the fair, whose first edition dates back to 1929, visitors can participate in tastings of typical local products , among which truffle-based recipes, cheeses, desserts and wines obviously stand out: a delicious full immersion in Piedmont culinary culture for a tasty note to your trip to this extraordinary region full of flavors.

Piedmont, land of chocolate and confectionery tradition

Piedmont, chocolate and confectionery tradition

And remaining on the gastronomic topic, we cannot miss the chance to mention another great delicacy of the Piedmont tradition and above all of Alba, a delicacy that has managed to conquer the world: confectionery production, especially based on chocolate and hazelnuts .

It is no coincidence that Alba is among the most important headquarters of one of the best confectionery companies in the world, originated right in the area, which revolutionized the market with the delicious chocolate and hazelnut spread cream that we all enjoyed at least once, drooling on a slice of toasted bread or directly from the spoon...that's right, that cream, the one with the N !

But what makes Alba and all of Piedmont special is above all the goodness of the artisanal chocolate and sweets , an exceptional experience for those with a sweet tooth but also for those who, in moderation, want to enjoy a real journey through refined and heavenly flavors. Alba, Italy: travel guide and places to see in the Piedmont town of Alba

Photo of Alba

The town of Alba is in the Piedmont region of north-east Italy, south-east of Turin and south-west of Milan . Although the city has its origins in Ancient Roman times, most of the monuments of interest today date from the 13th - 15th centuries.

Explore Alba

Although it is really the charm of the city as a whole, with its towers, palaces and unspoiled medieval streets that is the main attraction in Alba, there are also several monuments of particular interest that you will come across as you explore including the 11th century cathedral.

Your visit to Alba can begin with the Church of San Giovanni in the 'Elvio Pertinax Square' which contains several interesting artworks such as the the 'Madonna delle Grazie' by Barnaba da Modena (1377); the 'Adoration of the Child with Madonna and Saints Joseph Nicholas of Tolentino, Augustine, and Jerome”, by  Macrino da Alba, a local painter (c.1465-1520)).

In the church choir you can also see an icon by Giovanni Antonio Molineri (1575-1642), depicting the “Baptism of Jesus”; and in the third chapel on the right is a painting of the “Madonna del Carmine”, by Guglielmo Caccia, called “Moncalvo” (1568-1625).

cathedral in Alba, Piedmont

Back outside the church, on the square itself there are two 15th century tower-houses which still retain their structure from the late medieval period. Continue along Via Cavour, which has one of the most beautiful architectural structures of the entire Old Town, to reach the Piazza del Duomo and then Piazza Risorgimento.

This square is overlooked by the 11th century Alba Cathedral of San Lorenzo , of Gothic-Romanesque style, which has three portals on the façade which was redesigned in the 19th century, and a massive 13th century bell tower. Inside the cathedral is a fine wooden choir created by Bernardino Fossati in 1512.

Not far from the cathedral is the Church of San Domenico , a 13th century church with a Romanesque-Gothic façade, which opens onto a beautiful splayed portal. After visiting Saint Dominic Church continue along Via Calissano to see the Social Theatre , built in 1855 in the neo-classical style.

From the Piazza del Duomo you can follow the ancient Via Maestra (now called "Via Vittorio Emanuele”), which has long been an important artery for the social, cultural and economic life of Alba. This street is also a great place to stock up on delicacies for a great Italian picnic and other delicacies to take home with you!

At the intersection with Via Calissano, the Do House was built in the 15th century and decorated with terracotta friezes.

Medieval tower in the old town

Alba is especially a city of towers and, in Piazza del Duomo, it is possible to visit the highest and best preserved of these, which are the Sineo, Bonino and Artesiano towers.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist has a baroque style and holds a late 14th century painting by Barnaba da Modena and "Nativity" by Macrino da Alba, a painter who followed the stylistic influences of the Italian Central Art style.

Civil architecture in this part of Alba is represented by the medieval Loggia dei Mercanti, then the Fontana House and Diretti House: the first has a beautiful Renaissance frieze while the second has an elegant decoration with some small archs.

More art works can be seen in Alba City Hall such as the “Crowned Virgin” by Macrino da Alba (1501); the “Piccolo Concerto” by Mattia Preti (1613-1699), in the style of Caravaggio; a 16th-century altarpiece and a work by Pinot Gallizio.

Pinot Gallizio (1902-1964) was a leading exponent of the European avant-garde in the 1950s and 1960s and the inventor of the so-called "industrial painting” style.

Other monuments to visit in Alba include the Palace of the Counts of Serralunga; the Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian (18th century); and the baroque Church of Mary Magdalene.

The Civic Museum of Archaeology and Natural Sciences in Alba (called "Federico Eusebio"), contains some Roman and prehistoric archaeological collections relating to the area and natural ethnography sections.

Finally, walk to the Piazza Savona, with its attractive arcades and a tree-lined promenade with a fountain, built in the late 1950's. The majestic Church of Saint Paul in this square features a bronze portal, dedicated to the saint.

Alba cuisine and wines

Lovers of fine cuisine associate Alba with truffles and the product is very present in both the town and surrounding region. In October Alba holds the traditional "Truffle Fair of Alba" where you can find dishes made with truffles which go with noodles, ravioli, raw meat and fried eggs.

The local cheese is the characteristic "Robiola of Alba”, which is delicate and tasty. Other dishes to be sure to taste are the so-called "bagna calda", a sauce of anchovies, garlic, olive oil and butter, accompanied by raw vegetables in season; also the “polenta” with venison and snails cooked in various ways.

Among the sweets to try in Alba we recommend the "Bunet”, and a chocolate pudding called “Gianduja” with crushed amaretto and hazelnut cake. Among the wines you can sample the "Dolcetto d'Alba”, “Barbera d'Alba”, “Nebbiolo” and the "Freisa”.

Attractions nearby

In the surrounding region you can explre the vineyards and wine villages that are an important part of the local industry. These include the castle at Grinzane and the villages of La Morra and Barolo, perhaps the most well known of the local wines.

Monforte D’Alba Travel Guide

Discover Wineries, Vineyards, Private Wine Tours, Truffle Hunting & What to do in Monforte D’Alba, Langhe, Piedmont, Italy.

The small Italian village of Monforte D’Alba is one of the most interesting historical centre of Langhe’s area. In this travel guide you will find the best place to see, where to sleap and what to do, best tours and experience (wine tours, truffle hunting, cooking lesson), Cycling & Hiking Tours in Monforte D’Alba.

The name of the village derives from the latin “Mons Fortis” and alludes to the important position from the defensive and strategic point of view of the village, that is situated on a hill and fortified by a surrounding wall. From Monforte they can enjoy a wonderful view of surrounding hills upto the Alpine arc.

Monforte D’Alba

After a sequence of events, the village became, in the thirteenth century, the feud of the Marquises Del Carretto, which later were replaced by the Marquises Scarampi of Cairo. In 1703 it was conquered by the troops of Savoy House, and then finally went to the kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia.

The old town centre, fan-shaped arranged and perched around the old bell tower, was restored several times, in particular many noble and bourgeois palaces, bringing the village to its former glory.

At the center of the village is located Scarampi Palace which stands on the ruins of an ancient castle, documented in texts of the eleventh century, but no visible traces are available.

Where to stay in Monforte D’Alba?

Church “madonna della neve”.

Monforte D'Alba Luxury Villa

Far away from the center is located the imposing parish Church called “Madonna della Neve”. The building began in June 1909, according to the design of the engineer Giuseppe Gallo of Turin, and finished in October 1912. It has a neo-gothic style and presents a latin cross plant The main facade is preceded by a wide staircase. The facade is divided in three vertical bodies. On the portals appear high-reliefs, created by Oreste Torello of Biella.

A curiosity that concerns the village is linked to the presence, during the eleventh century, of a large community of heretics. In the middle of the eleventh century, the archbishop Aribert, head of the Diocese of Alba, ordered the deportation of Monforte’s heretics to Milan, where they were burned at the stake. An inn in the center of the village remembers this sad event.

Perno Village

In this place is possible to find the wine production of the commune of Monforte D’Alba. From June 2014 the vineyards are part of the heritage of Unesco.

A few kilometers away from the main village, on top of a hill surrounded by two wooded areas, is located the small rural village of Perno. The small village was established around the castle, built in the thirteenth century and profoundly altered during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The exterior curtain wall is the oldest part, built in splitted stone masonry, equipped with small defensive towers to protect the corners. Next to the castle is situated the country chapel dedicated to Santo Stefano, built in the same period of the castle on a site previously used as a burial ground. it was reshaped between 1753 and 1757. Inside are preserved frescoes of the late fourteenth and early twentieth century.

1. San Lorenzo Cathedral

Located in Piazza Risorgimento, this Gothic Cathedral was built back in 1486 with distinctive red bricks. A true work of art, both from outside and from inside, seeing the San Lorenzo Cathedral of Alba is a must.

2. Church of San Domenico

Close to the Cathedral, near the street of Via Calissano, you’ll find the Church of San Domenico – a Romanesque-Gothic-style building that dates back to the 13 th century.

It has been restored along the years by the Albeisa family. Today, concerts and exhibitions are still organized inside, to appreciate at best the interior’s artistic setting.

3. Santa Maria Maddalena Church

A more typical Piedmontese baroque building, the Santa Maria Maddalena Church was built by Bernardo Antonio Vittone back in the 18 th century. With a large wooden portal that is crossed by arrows, this church is one of the more notable ones you’ll find in Alba.

4. The Towers

alba italy, langhe wine region, white alba truffle, piedmont vineyards, where is alba italy - Top 6 things to see & do in Alba Italy - 2024 - 4

Know as the “City of 100 Towers”, Alba saw the construction of a whole series of towers in a short length of time, to protect the city. Today, unfortunately only a few towers still remain. The main ones to admire are: Torre Bonino, Torre Astesiano and Torre Sieno, located in Piazza del Duomo.

5. Antico Caffè Calissano

What’s a trip to Italy with no excellent coffee breaks?

Caffès Calissano is Alba’s main caffè spot, created by Luigi Calissano in Piazza del Duomo, in the 19th century. Inside, you can notice fresques and artistic ornaments that date back to the 17 th century. For once, it’s better to enjoy your espresso inside rather than on the piazza!

6. Attend one of Alba Italy’s events

All year long, this lively city offers entertaining shows to locals and tourists:

  • Last weekend of May: Flowering Festival at Piazza del Duomo;
  • Alba Music Festival for 2 weeks between May and June, and 3 weeks in July/August;
  • Go to one of the many concerts;
  • The International Faire of the White Truffle of Alba in October;
  • Tournaments of the Hundred Towers on the first Sunday of October;
  • Vinum Wine Festival in April;
  • Alba Festa del Vino during the last weekend of September.

Alba, the gourmet capital of Piedmont

Alba is also a heritage of wine and food. All year long, many events and festivities are focused on Alba cuisine and local specialties. If you are a foodie, go to Market Aleramim where locals offer most exquisite Piedmont food & wine specialties like the local cheese “Rabiola of Alba” and of course, famous “Polenta”.

Whether or not you want to taste the extraordinary wines, Alba is worth the visit for its alluring mix of red-brick medieval towers, Baroque and Renaissance palaces and cobbled streets. And if you come in early October, you might catch the town’s hilarious annual donkey race – a skit on nearby Asti’s prestigious Palio.

The town’s only sight as such is its late-Gothic Duomo, standing confectionery-pink on the central Piazza Risorgimento. But Alba is primarily a place to stroll and eat. Leading up to the centre from Piazza Savona, the main drag of Via Vittorio Emanuele is a fine, bustling street, with Alba’s local produce on display – wines, truffles, cheeses, weird and wonderful mushroom varieties, and the wickedly sticky nocciola, a nutty, chocolatey cake. Via Cavour is a pleasant medieval street, behind which the donkey race and displays of medieval pageantry attract the crowds during the October festival. There’s also an annual truffle festival later in the month, when you could blow your whole budget on a knobbly truffle or a meal in one of the many swanky restaurants. At the end of April/beginning of May, the Vinum wine festival gives you the chance to taste five hundred local wines.

Alba, Italy Guide: Best Things to Do, See, and Eat

One of my favorite under-the-radar destinations in Italy is Alba. It’s a gorgeous city in the Cuneo province, only about two hours from Milan. Known for their white truffles and wine, keep reading to learn everything you need to know to have an amazing trip to this charming town!

Traveling to Alba, Italy: What to Know

Getting to alba.

The best way to get to Alba from the US is by flying into Milan (MXP). We rented a car in Milan and took a road trip, winding through the vineyard-lined roads. It’s a beautiful 2-hour drive!

You can also catch a train from Milan’s city center that will take you through Turin. It leaves every hour and takes about three hours. Taking a train is a great way to sit back and relax while taking in the views!

If you’re coming from elsewhere in Italy, you can hop on a cheap flight to Cuneo on RyanAir and then take a short train ride. You can also take a bus from Milan, but there are a lot of bus changes and stops to deal with. I suggest either renting a car or arriving by train!

Top Things To Do in Alba, Italy

Hunt for truffles.

Alba is home to the fittingly named Alba white truffles, one of the rarest and most expensive foods in the world. It’s not a complete trip to Alba without going hunting for truffles.  The location of white truffles is top secret and only the best hunters can find them. Book a truffle hunting tour to head out on a truffle hunt with some of the best and most experienced guides.

Alba Italy truffles

Go from October to December to visit the Alba White Truffle Fair! There are workshops on the history and culture of white truffle hunting, tastings from some of the best chefs in the world, and more truffles than you ever thought imaginable!

Here are some of the top-rated tours:

Visit a Tartufi

Don’t want to get down and dirty for a truffle hunt? You can still enjoy the local delicacy at a local Tartufi (truffle shop). You’ll bump elbows with some of the best French chefs in the world as they procure truffles for that day’s dinner menu! You can grab your own if you want to splurge.

Tartufi Morra

If you can only visit one Tartufi, make sure it’s Tartufi Morra . They’re the OGs for truffle shopping in Alba and offer a wide range of white truffle products for every shopper. We bought truffle salt and I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Visit a Winery

Alba is known first for their truffles and second for their wine. There’s over 300 wineries in the Alba region, most of them being family owned dating back hundreds of years.

Winery near Alba Italy

Head out on a wine tour to ensure you taste the full spectrum of Alba’s offerings without having to plan it yourself. Save an entire day to just enjoy yourself because, in addition to delicious wines, the views from the wineries are gorgeous — like the photo above from our visit to Rivetto Winery!

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato

This UNESCO World Heritage site is made up of five different wine-growing areas known for their beautiful landscapes and delicious vintages, including Castello di Grinzane Cavour (read below for more information on the castle). With five distinct areas of wine-making, you could spend a few days touring around the local vineyards to see what makes each area special and unique. It’s one of the prettiest places ever, so the wine is just icing on top!

Langhe Roero

Have Lunch in a Castle

Live your Cinderella fantasy at Castello di Grinzane Cavour ! It’s a stunning castle from the 11th century that overlooks the famed Langhe hills dotted with local vineyards.

Castello di Grinzane Cavour near Alba

They serve gourmet dishes from the Alba region perfectly paired with local wines at Marc Lanteri RIstorante, the Castle’s Michelin starred restaurant. Reservations are required and can be difficult to get, so plan ahead of time.

Explore the Town

Alba is a charming small town, which makes it a delight to stroll down the historic cobblestone streets. It’s beautiful enough to just enjoy a nice walk through the meandering roads and alleyways, but I recommend checking these places out to get a full picture of the history and culture of Alba:

Piazza Risorgimento and Via Caviar

Alba used to be called ‘the city of a hundred towers’ because of all of the buildings with towering spires in the city center. Sadly, most of them are gone because of earthquake damage and  lack of maintenance. The best place to see the most preserved ones are between Piazza Risorgimento and Via Cavour. Some of the remaining towers have been lowered to roof level, but it’s still a very pretty walk.

piazza risorgimento Alba Italy

Church of San Giovanni

Stop by the Church of San Giovanni to visit the second oldest church in Alba. It has beautiful artwork, unique architecture, and storied history. It’s been beautifully maintained, so make sure to pause your walk to admire its beauty before heading on your way.

Church of san giovanni - Alba Italy Things to do

Alba Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Piazza Risorgimento

Located right in the city center of Alba, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the oldest church in Alba, dating back to the early 12th century. The inside of the cathedral is beautiful, with ornate furniture and amazing antique artwork.

Alba's cathedral of san lorenzo

Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

Not only is Alba known for their truffles and wine… it’s also the birthplace of Ferrero Rocher and Nutella!! You can’t visit the actual factory, but the chocolatey-hazelnutty perfection is everywhere. If you walk by their factory in the town center, you can even smell chocolate wafting in the air. Most cafes have Nutella in stock, so order a coffee and ask them to add a bit of Nutella for an unforgettable Alba specialty!

Half-Day Trip to Barolo

If you rented a car, a small day trip to Barolo is a great way to see even more of the famed Piedmont area. You can also take a quick bus ride from Alba-Barolo. Once you’re in Barolo, another town famous for its high-quality wine, you can book a wine tour . You’ll taste wines, hear the history of the wineries in the region from a local, and take in the beautiful views of the vineyards.

Barolo Day Trip

If you’re not looking to spend the day on the go, you can still taste all of the wonderful wines of the Barolo region at Enoteca Regionale Barolo . It’s a tasting room run by the city of Barolo where you can taste 16+ different local wines all from the coziness of the local castle.

The best way to spend the rest of your time in Barolo is strolling through town. It’s full of picturesque cobblestone alleys, where cars are not allowed. Stop into any of their local restaurants and you’ll be sure to find a tasty meal!

Explore Other Towns Nearby Alba

There are so many gorgeous little towns dotted along the Piedmont area of Italy. Renting a car means you’ll have the freedom to explore all of them on your own time! Here are some of the cutest towns near Alba:

Avigliana Only about an hour away from Alba is the jewel of the Lower Sun Valley, Avigliana . It’s a medieval town with amazing architecture and beautiful mountain views. Make sure to check out the Avigliana Castle, Sacred of San Michele, and Avigliana Lake Natural Park!

Avigliana Italy

Canale di Tenno This cute and small wine town is only 20 minutes from Alba, making it a super easy day trip! Of course, you have to visit the local wineries and tasting rooms. A great way to enjoy the scenery in a different way is on a bike! Rent an e-bike (for easier uphills) in Alba and take them to ride through the less busy roads of Canale di Tenno.

Canale di Tenno

Cannero Riviera For a gorgeous day spent lakeside, Cannero Riviera is a perfect choice! It’s a classic riviera-style town, with beautiful buildings hugging the coastline and views of the bright blue lake for miles. With a warmer climate come fresh fruits like citrus, perfect for garnishing your drink at lunch! It’s seriously beautiful and well worth the two-hour drive from Alba.

Cannero Riviera Italy

Turin The capital of the Piedmont region with stunning mountain vistas, amazing museums and cultural sites, and some of the best food in Italy, Turin is a must-visit if you’re in the Piedmont area! Tour royal residencies, visit the National Cinema Museum, or hit the slopes in the nearby Italian Alps!

Turin Italy

Hot Air Balloon Tour

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take in the beautiful views of the UNESCO World Heritage site from your vineyard tours or drives through the countryside. However, the best way to really admire the magnificent views is in the air!

Hot air balloon in Italy

Truffle Hunting Alba also offers hot air balloon tours that will give you a whole new perspective of the Piedmont area. With your balloon ride, you’ll get an aperitivo and local wines, photos, a tour guide, and transportation to and from your hotel. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Piedmont Cooking Class

When you’re staying in a place so known for its food, you’ll want to discover the behind-the-scenes magic that makes your favorite dishes a reality. Take a private cooking class to learn how to cook classic Piedmontese dishes like pasta with truffles, hazelnut cake, and more!

Splurge on Piazza Duomo

Treat yourself to a meal at Piazza Duomo . It boasts THREE Michelin stars and is #15 on San Pellegrino’s World’ Best 50 Restaurants. The food is obviously incredible, the restaurant is beautiful, and the entire experience is like no other, from beginning to end.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Piazza Duomo (@piazzaduomoalba)

Of course, do your best to book a table ahead of time as they book up quickly. If you’re already in Alba, you can try your luck as they sometimes have next-day openings. It’s right in the city center, so even if you can’t snag a table, take a walk by!

Learn About Alba, Italy and Why You Should Visit

  • 8 minute read

Alba is a lesser-known culinary capital in Piedmont, Italy, the capital of the UNESCO Heritage Site of Langhe, a historical center, and a vibrant community.

My mother and I parked our car at Alba’s train station. If there’s one thing you should know about Italy, it’s that the safest way to avoid a fine for entering into a historic area or to avoid paying for parking is to park at the train station . But, parking the car at the train station sometimes means parking in the not so beautiful part of the city. We walked into the town of Alba starting with the outskirts of the city. Modern, tall housing residences…this was not what I expected when I had heard great things about Alba, Italy. We were tempted to turn around, but if there’s one thing my mother and I knew was that the true “historic center” was always next to the duomo or cathedral. So I kept my eyes glued to my Google Map and tried to lead the way.

Finally we broke through the outskirts. It was obvious we had entered the city center. Cobblestone roads, lively labyrinth-like streets, glass storefronts rich in truffles, plenty of food, local artisan products, and palaces rich in Gothic-Romanesque architecture lined the tops of the streets. Ah yes, this was the Alba I had heard so much about — an elegant town dominated by a pink-bricked cathedral. Sveva, take note: Blindfold yourself to the outskirt of the city, as you walk street by street into the city center, it’s like peeling back the layers of an onion until the core is exposed.

Alba is one of the biggest towns and the capital of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Langhe in Piedmont . It is known as the culinary capital of Piedmont most famously for its white truffle fair (or tartufi ) held on weekends during the month of November, as well as it’s peach production and, of course, wine . In fact, Langhe-Roero has over 15 Michelin Starred restaurants and the majority of them are in Alba. Add on the fact that Nutella and Ferrero Rocher come from Alba and you’ve got yourself the definition of an Italian culinary capital that has a lot to offer.

<h3 id=”catedrale”>

Learn About Alba, Italy and Why You Should Visit catedrale san lorenzo

The marvelous architectural streets of Via Cavour and Via Vittoria Emanuele gravitate you towards Piazza Risorgimento where you find Catedrale di San Lorenzo , or Saint Lawrence Cathedral. This stunning red brick cathedral is unlike any church I’ve seen in Piedmont. Its color is what really struck me, the warm pinks and reds, alongside its arches and stained glass windows. It even has an underground museum that allows you to discover Alba’s ancient past and ties to the Roman era. Alba was fought over for many years since it’s close to the border of Italy, France, and Switzerland. It was involved in many games of tug a war until it was owned by the Savoie family and became part of Italy during the unification. It’s long history remains in these underground museums.

Learn About Alba, Italy and Why You Should Visit medieval towers

We made our way down Via Cavour , named after one of the key unifiers of Italy and the man who helped jumpstart the famous Barolo wine production. If you look up you’ll see a sky full of medieval towers breaking through the sky every 100 meters or so. The “town of 100 towers” is one of Alba’s many nicknames. Medieval towers served multiple purposes. They were built to represent the power of noble families, protect the city, and store agricultural products. Today, only ten of them still exist, but it’s still enough to keep the skyline busy.

Why do so many streets in Italy have the same name?

In Italy, you’ll notice we throw around the street names Via Cavour and Via Vittorio Emanuele among a few others in almost every city or village. It’s like the equivalent of a Park Avenue or Main Street in the US. Reason being these are some of the founding fathers of Italy, so we venerate them and remind ourselves of them by naming our streets after them.

My gaze was pulled from the sky to a bumblebee yellow panetteria , or bakery, with moss green open window shutters, a large display case, wrapped in a black and green slab of marble. It wasn’t the color that drew my attention, but the wafting smell of baked goods. My mom and I went in and got a few bread rolls to take home for dinner. My favorite part about Italy? The price of bread. Three bread rolls are like .30 cents.

<h3 id=”lunch”>

Lunch: Piadina with Truffles, Gina la Piadina

tourist office alba

Having just left the wine town of Barolo and being 12PM, we were in search of food. Nothing too heavy since it was a hot day, but we still wanted it to be unique to Alba. My mother and I saw two women walk by with a piadina in hand–a flat bread of sorts, like a tortilla in Italian version. That’s what we wanted. We asked them where they got it and they sent us to the bottom of Via Cavour. We saw a queue forming at the end of Via Cavour, it was prime lunch hour for school students and they were lining up outside of a place called Gina La Piadina . That’s exactly what we wanted, a piadina from Romagna made with local Alba ingredients.

In order to make it unique to Alba, I ordered the piadina with mozzarella, grilled zucchini, and truffle cream. I mean, I had to try truffles , I was in Alba. What makes Gina La Piadina unique, aside from there many ingredients and options, is the fact that they make piadine with different types of wheat (which I had never seen done before). You have the option of having your piadina made with regular grain or whole grain farro. We took our piadine and sat in a corner on Via Cavour watching as people walked by. The modest amount of truffle cream was enough to add a sharp intense flavor of the truffle here and there without overcoming the piadina’s flavor.

Learn About Alba, Italy and Why You Should Visit bar pasticceria cignetti gianduia torrone

As we walked past the Cathedral and down Via Vittorio Emanuele, we came across one of the oldest bars in Alba founded in 1878 and still standing to this date: Bar Pasticceria Cignetti . It’s very easy to spot as you walk down the main street. Cignetti has a classic Art Nouveau façade, display case packed with classical Italian old world candies and chocolates (like the ones my grandma used to give me), and bistro chairs with ceramic decorations. Since Alba is home to the famous chocolatiers and institutions of Nutella and Ferrero, it goes without saying that the old bar is famous for their hazelnut nougat or torrone , Barolo, and Moscato chocolates. On colder months, the thick hot chocolate is a can’t miss.

tourist office alba

I had checked truffles off my list, but now it was time to bite into the sweet stuff from Alba, their traditional dolci . Alba is home to the nougat or Torrone and legendary Gianduia chocolates. We stepped inside and found ourselves immersed in an authentic Piedmont atmosphere dipped in antique wooden and velvet furniture . Their classic dolce is the bite-sized Torrone with hazelnuts from the Langhe region pictured on the upper right. You can choose from two types of Torrone the classic crumbly Torrone or newer soft Torrone . Of course, I went for the classic crumbly. The “King of Torrone d’Alba,” the Antica Torroneria Piemontese produces the torroni at Bar Pasticceria Cignetti .

I also purchased a handful of mine and my mother’s favorite chocolates, Gianduia chocolates or simply gianduiotto , to go. The go-to brand for these is Caffarel , small cigarette like chocolates hugged in a glistening gold wrapper. They cost an arm and a leg in the US and are expensive in Italy as well, but always less than the US. They are the definition of perfect, flawless chocolates in my mind. Gianduia is a blend of milk chocolate and ground hazelnuts. This small chocolate came to be when cacao prices were high. In order to extend chocolate supply, chocolatiers through hazelnuts in the chocolate to increase production, and well, it worked. The chocolate has a smooth, soft, melting texture that gives it a mouth-watering finish that remains embedded in your mind.

Learn About Alba, Italy and Why You Should Visit alberto marchetti gelato

While I was craving classic chocolates, on this hot September day my mother was craving gelato . Just a few feet down from Bar Pasticceria Cignetti was Alberto Marchetti Gelaterie . Gelato has been in Alberto Marchetti’s blood since he was a child. When he got older, he started his own business. As he makes his way through Italy, he personally chooses the gelato ingredients and where they’re sourced from. He goes to the fields first-hand and watches where the fruits are harvested and where the milk is made. He treasures the concept of Slow Food in every flavor of gelato he makes.

I stole a taste of my mom’s stracciatella , basically chocolate chip, gelato. It was icy and light. The milk wasn’t a heavy cream bomb that sat in your belly, it was easily digestable and didn’t leave you with that thirsty pasty feeling in your mouth that you get after eating low quality gelato. You could tell the products were top notch.

If this is all I was able to do with just a few hours in Alba, imagine what you could do if you had a few days? You could taste your way around the city, take your time in acquainting yourself with the slow food movement, the cities pace of life, history, people, and take day trips around the wine region.

New travel deals for Amazon Prime members on cruises, rental cars, flights and more

These savings on travel come in time for any last-minute summer vacations.

Amazon Prime Day is fast approaching, and beyond viral beauty products or hot new kitchenware, the e-commerce giant is introducing savings on travel just in time for any last-minute summer vacations.

Amazon partnered with various travel companies, including Southwest Airlines, Viator, Turo, Carnival, and others, to give Prime members early access to price cuts on travel packages, car rentals, and cruises.

In a similar move last summer fellow retail competitor Walmart partnered with Expedia to give Walmart+ members the ability to earn Walmart Cash by booking vacations.

"These travel deals are sort of an extra that they can offer their members," RetailMeNot editor Kristin McGrath told ABC News. "There are plenty of ways you can save and get discounts. These membership programs can just make it a little bit easier."

Costco travel discounts and deals

The warehouse retailer's travel arm offers everyday savings on top-quality, brand-name vacations, hotels, cruises, and rental cars, exclusively for Costco members.

Teresita Nino has used Costco to book vacation packages and told ABC News how she saved on international deals.

"My last trip that we booked was to Saint Lucia and we ended up booking the airfare and the hotel -- I ended up saving about $700," Nino said of her experience using Costco. "Nine out of ten times is Costco Travel is always giving me a better deal overall than other travel companies."

Access to Costco's travel deals require a paid membership as an extra perk for customers.

"The travel savings are the cherry on top -- but it's not necessarily the most lucrative benefit," McGrath said. "In these membership programs, you have to take the value of membership as a whole rather than just joining to save on travel."

State employees get extra day off for July 4, 2024

On Monday, June 24, DeSantis  created a four-day Fourth of July holiday weekend this year for state employees.

DeSantis announced state offices will closed Friday, July 5, in addition to the scheduled closure on July 4 for Independence Day.

“Following another historic legislative session that delivered tax breaks and record investments for Floridians – all while reducing spending – I hope our state employees use this additional time off to enjoy Florida’s Freedom Summer with their loved ones and celebrate America,” DeSantis said.

Record-breaking travel expected over Fourth of July holiday

  • An estimated 70.9 million people will travel for the Fourth of July holiday, a record-breaking number.
  • The most popular domestic destinations are Seattle, Orlando , Anchorage, Honolulu and Miami .
  • The worst times to drive for 4th of July week are July 3 and 4 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Readout of the Pardon Attorney’s Visit to FCI Coleman

On June 25, Pardon Attorney Elizabeth Oyer and members of her team visited Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Coleman, the largest Federal Complex in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) located in Sumterville, Florida. The Pardon Attorney and her team provided a series of educational sessions about the federal clemency process and answered questions from FBOP staff and incarcerated individuals at the low-security, medium-security and minimum-security camp. During their visit, the Pardon Attorney and her team met with approximately 1,200 incarcerated individuals and FBOP staff members.

The visit to FCI Coleman was the eighth in a series of quarterly educational events that the Pardon Attorney is conducting for incarcerated individuals and staff at different FBOP locations.

After visiting FCI Coleman, the Pardon Attorney met with U.S. Attorney Rodger Handberg for the Middle District of Florida to discuss the clemency process.

These educational sessions within the FBOP, followed by stakeholder meetings, are part of the initiative by the Office of the Pardon Attorney to increase the accessibility and transparency of the clemency process through education and community engagement.

Gov. Reynolds Extends Disaster Proclamation to Additional 20 Counties in Response to Severe Storms and Flooding

  • Saturday, June 22, 2024
  • Press Release

Gov. Kim Reynolds has extended a disaster emergency proclamation to an additional 20 counties in northwest Iowa in response to severe storms and flooding that occurred on June 21. The 21 total counties include Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Floyd, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Sioux, Webster, Winnebago, Woodbury, Worth, and Wright.

The governor's proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this severe weather and activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and Disaster Case Advocacy Program.

The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses. Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for actual expenses related to storm recovery.
