A product of the infamous 60’s Greenwich Village scene where he moved as a young teenager, Jackson Browne has matured into a prolific singer-songwriter who has sold over 18 million albums in America.

Jackson was born in Germany in 1948 before moving to California where he began folk singing in local clubs. As a teen he moved to New York and became a part of the Greenwich Village scene, befriending the likes of Tim Buckley and Nico. Nico and Jackson became romantically and musically involved resulting in Jackson contributing heavily to her debut album ‘Chelsea Girl’. Although classic songs like ‘These Days’ were Jackson’s compositions he wouldn’t record his own versions till years later.

Under the management of David Geffen, Jackson signed to Asylum Records and released his self-titled debut album in 1971. Singles like ‘Doctor My Eyes’ and ‘Rock Me On The Water’ were popular and a tour with Joni Mitchell helped to further promote the album. His next albums ‘For Everyman’ and ‘Late for the Sky’ received critical and commercial acclaim (the latter peaking at 14 in the album charts) and helped to solidify his sound, becoming known for his memorable melodies and personal lyrics.

As his career continued, his music to remained popular and his contributions to music were acknowledged when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He also became known as a vocal activist on environmental issues (such as nuclear power and living more ‘greenly’) and has always contributed to charitable causes throughout his career.

Live reviews

Great show tonight at The Landmark in Syracuse. Paul Dieter, Jackson's sound guy, had some trouble dialing it in and the sound was a little harsh starting out, but settled right down. Jackson is so enthusiastic about having both Val and Greg on the same tour and practically oozes his appreciation. On many songs they both do solos. If I never have to hear The Pretender, Runnin' On Empty, or Take It Easy (saved by the segue into Our Lady Of The Well) , it would be too soon. But the crowd loves them and they always have prominent places in the set. He was very inclusive tonight and so was open to crowd suggestions. A kick ass version of Zevon's Lawyers Guns and Money and spur of the moment insertions of Late For The Sky; Shape of A Heart; Looking East; Red Neck Friend. On this tour he has his back up singers (Alethea Mills and Chavonne Stewart) add their faith based fourth verse to Lives In The Balance. Very generous two and a half hour show with a little intermission for the old guys and their prostates and leaky bladders. Not the audience, the talent.

While the two sets included Somebody's Baby, I miss not having Too Many Angels, I Am A Patriot, Skies Blue and Black, I'll Do Anything, and Barricades of Heaven. As Don Henley pointed out in talking about his rendition of These Days on the double tribute cd produced by the late Jimmy LaFave, Jackson was fucking sixteen when he wrote that! And though he's mistakenly updated the lyrics in concert, it highlights his character. A young boy with an old soul.

While Barb continues to declare Dawes her favorite band, let's not forget it's also known as The Jackson Browne, Jr. Band. We were listening to the cd Nothing Is Wrong on the way down and the crowd pleaser is the track Fire Away. It has Jackson on one of the tags in the end. He sings the low part:)

We've seen Jackson at each of his last three performances at Sunset Center and, quite frankly, this was far and away the best show! We've seen him on several other occasions earlier in his career and last nights show stacks up against any of them. The entire band looked like they were having fun and enjoying themselves. Jackson was communicative and funny - although at one point he made the comment that he was trying to talk less during the show so they could play more music. And they did!!!!! The show was 3 hours and 15 minutes with one 15 minute break.

Jackson's voice sounded much stronger than the last time we saw him. It probably helped that he had a group of players and vocalists behind him to help him along but, even when it was just him, he sounded really, really great!

We got to hear him play some different songs; once we hadn't heard in a while or had never heard performed before. That was fun and I think Jackson enjoyed the change as well.

Maybe not for the reason we might default to but our favorites of the night were his new song with Leslie Mendelson called Human Touch and I am a Patriot. Leslie's voice is sooooo very great and she sounds perfect with Jackson on this song. The song itself is amazing!

I AM A PATRIOT was one we had not heard him perform previously. He did it as the first encore and the energy in the performance and in the room was electric. The passion of the song was easily evident!

We also really enjoyed his performance of Walls and Doors. First, the song is so well done and moving. More importantly, Jackson seemed to truly love singing it and did an amazing job.

I am biased I know but the man created the songbook of my life and likely many others. It is just so very great to see him still enjoying himself and sounding so very great!

I was 9 yrs old the first time i saw Jackson Browne.Im 63 now.Since then, Ive seen him 200 more times.Ive seen him now into his 70's. To say I appreciate him for the gift he truly is,would be an understatement. He is what makes people try their best to be better humanbeings, better stewards of our planet and what it means to help others ,as best u can ,while still staying true to yourself. He makes the world a better place. He is gracious and kind ,its so strickingly clear how vital, he still is. While just a man , he is a testament to all things fine and good.I have never tired of him or what he has to say ,nor will i ever, i suppose. Im grateful and thankful and humbled to have been so blessed to experience him thru my entire life. On Sept 10th 2021 ,i saw him up close and personal at the OXBOW RIVER STAGE. I paid a small fortune for the opportunity.I would do it all over again. The man was playing like a young kid and having some serious fun. Everything about the night was magical ,even the moon was in attendance. The weather so mild , it kissed your skin. His new album"Downhill from Everywhere ",is a must buy. Its just incredible. Every song on it is a masterpiece in its own right. And the more you listen, the more you hear and it transports you straight into now and how critical everything hes saying is. Hes generously collabrating with younger artists and its this openness, thats enchanting and poignant and ringing true ,resonating an urgency in his music. He has a natural gift,a timing that is uncanny. These are just some of the reasons he continually has held my attention,my entire life. BRAVO, BRAVO ,BRAVO. VAYA CON DIOS.

Another certified rock Legend, Jackson Browne practically invented a totally new sound of Rock music in the 1970’s. It helped define a part of the country and the time period. The shows was packed full and in a very large outdoor arena.

Most of the crowd was older but there were some younger people here and there. He had a great back up band. He opened the show with his smash hit “Runnin on Empty”. He played his other hit songs like “Boulevard” and “Somebody’s Baby”. One of the best songs was when he did the radio favorite “Doctor my Eyes” and it really brought the house down. He closed with “The Pretender” and the song “Stay” which is always the perfect show to end a concert on.

He really looked good and his voice sounded great. He did not show or sound his age. He played for almost 2 hours and was really good with interacting with the crowd. He also told a lot of good and funny stories about his life as a rock and roll legend. Everyone was really pleased with the performance and I would see him again if he tours again. It is a rare treat to get to see someone with so many hit songs.

IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

We all sat while you entertained for hours, reliving the 70's and some tunes. It reminded us of the incredible lyricist Jackson is. Smart move in having Sean and Sara on tour. In themselves they are very accomplished musicians, blending in so well...never a note off beat.

Jackson's covers of Little Feat, Warren Zevon , Glenn Frey and Leonard Cohen brought us to our feet.It is interesting when a performer plays their favorite song, and that an audience member suggested this.

It indicated to me there was a very short set list, and the improv-like comraderie between performer and those listening was so comfortable it did, as Jackson refereed, to be like in his living room.

Thank you for your compliment on us being polite..Only because we respect the quiet you and your musicians needed to collaberate.

The man hasn't lost his voice..The clarity of every word, note and suitable guitar to accompany every song kept the audience wanting more. Thank You. Thank You..

Jackson Browne performed many beautiful songs including his most well known songs like 'The Pretender". The venue at All Saints Church in Pasadena last Friday 11/16/18. Vocalists Alethea Mills and Chavonne Stewart organized the benefit concert 'Exposure' a fundraiser to support underserved children. Jackson was joking he better watch his language lol, because he was performing in a church, ;) We had a wonderful time. The cathedral had beautiful arches and intricate carved wood moldings with giant very beautiful stained glass windows. Reminds me of a quoat where the author compares people like stained glass windows: "like stained glass windows, we sparkle and shine in the sun,but when darkness sets in true beauty is only revealed if a light is within" ~ Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. That night I think the light was shining all the way to heaven.~ Suzie McDonald

I thought it was an excellent show. I had never seen him before, but always loved his music. he did not disappoint. He played 25 songs! many of these were classic hits, but just as many were older songs that only die hards would know and love. Finally, he also played a number of newer songs....great balance.

I found him to very engaging, talking to the crowd throughout the show and seemed very genuine and personable. One point that stood out was during "A Shape in the Heart," he forgot where he was and had to go back. in fact, he still couldn't pull it together, right away, so he simply apologized, laughed at himself, while the band played on, then found his way. it was a wonderfully personal and unrehearsed moment.

At 70 years old - his voice is still strong. I would definitely encourage people to see him!

Jackson describes his current band as an "embarrassment of riches", which is definitely not an embarrassment for his fans! These girls (Alethia Mills, Chavonne Stewart) and guys (Greg Leitz, Mauricio Lewak, Val McCallum, Jeffrey Young, Bob Glaub) are the perfect combination to keep Jackson's music alive and fresh. The setlist was a mix of his famous folk songs, activist message songs, and fan favorites (You Love the Thunder, The Dreamer, The Pretender, Somebody's Baby). The band looked like it was having fun, with Greg snapping some pics with the sunset, and the girls laughing at the goofy couple in the front row. I have seen JB over 25 times since 1978, all over the country,so it is thrilling for me to see that his shows are selling out each time and he and the band are delivering amazing shows night after night.

Saw him last night at Beacon with Luscious... Was very impressed with the warm up band as I had not heard of them.... will investigate them more

Browne sounded great and did a nice job on stage presence... the song selection left a little to be desired.... I expect new songs and some covers but would have preferred more of his classics.... Perhaps it was being in NY but he added some "political" songs if not commentary at the expense of some classics that were apparently played in the set list from other venues... Missed hearing, late for the sky, for a dancer and others for the political leaning ones....

All in all was good but disappointed in song selection but was to be expected with Browne's political leanings.. wish they would keep that to themselves and perform

The Royal Albert Hall has seen and will continue to host many great artists and performers. Jackson Browne and his incredibly talented band did justice to this iconic venue with a selection of his greatest songs. As he said, amidst shouts for tunes from all stages of his career, he had a set list but he was prepared to change it somewhat and duly delivered many of the requested songs. He even took the 'p' out of himself by playing a Randy Newman song 'A Piece of the Pie' that gently satires his political protests; 'no one gives a sh-t but Jackson Browne'! Jacksons voice was incredible, as warm textured and full as ever. His lyrics and melodies are timeless. Long may he tour and keep coming back to the UK!

Springsteen archives & center for american music announces 2024 honorees.

February 20, 2024

The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music has announced the honorees of its second annual American Music Honors event, to be held Wednesday, April 24 on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.

Jackson Browne

The 2024 honorees are: John Mellencamp, who together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid in 1985. The social activism reflected in Mellencamp’s songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers that continues to this day; Jackson Browne, a long-time social justice, environmental and educational activist who has supported everything from anti-nuclear alternative energy resources to political freedom in Central America; Mavis Staples, who in the 1960’s was on the frontlines of the civil rights movement and continues to use her music to support racial equality in America; Dion DiMucci, who’s landmark recording of “Abraham, Martin and John” became an activist anthem in the late 1960’s and beyond.

“The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music is proud to honor these musically, culturally, and politically important artists,” said Robert Santelli, Founding Executive Director of the Springsteen Archives. “All four artists—John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, and Dion—have contributed mightily to the American music canon and have demonstrated how the power of song can act as an agent for positive change in our country.”

American Music Honors will take place in Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre. Stevie Van Zandt’s Disciples of Soul will serve as the event’s house band. Award presenters include Bruce Springsteen and Jon Landau and 2023 American Music Honors recipients Van Zandt and Darlene Love.

Tickets for the event will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, March 23. Ticket information is available on the Archives’ website springsteenarchives.org .

Jackson Browne

jackson browne tour 2023 europe

18th April 2023 Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Auckland, New Zealand.

Review by Mike Beck . Photography by Chris Zwaagdyk .

Tuesday night in Auckland city and consummate singer-songwriter/wordsmith Jackson Browne is in town. Any night is a good night for rock ’n’ roll right?

The LA/West-Coast troubadour (he cut his teeth at that very same-named venue) has certainly gone the distance. With 15 studio albums spanning a 50+ year career to his name, record-sales clocking in the multi-millions, a rise to the top ranks in the 70’s; he’s received a tonne of praise from critics and his peers alike, along with adoration from generations of music fans.

A craftsman song-writer of the highest level (mentor to ‘The Eagles’ founders Don Henley and Glenn Fry), storyteller and sometime activist, Browne had recently been pent-up in Australia with an unknown illness. Whew, thank God he recovered and made it to our shores. The classy Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre held the setting for Browne’s first of three concerts for this current Aotearoa tour. What a suitably matching venue for the 74 years young elder statesman. Not always but this does happen; no support act tonight – it was straight into the main feature.

Opening up with ‘Before the Deluge’ from 1974’s masterwork Late For The Sky, Browne immediately revealed that he and his seasoned seven-piece band were all about executing tasteful and earthy renditions of selections from his extensive catalogue. An invigorating re-interpretation of ‘I’m Alive’ followed, the title track of a comeback record of sorts from the early 90’s.

‘Never Stop’ exemplified the languid nature of the way Browne’s band approached his songs. Maybe Browne lends to this with his onstage demeanour, this time along with little cues throughout the night that he had not recovered 100% from his recent illness. He quipped; “It’s so good to be here. I’ve been under a rock in Sydney Harbour for four days, and I don’t know exactly what is was.”

Launching into ‘The Barricades Of Heaven’, LA guitarist Mason Stoops was given his first shot at a fret-tastic solo. He would continue to execute well-constructed and aesthetically pleasing solos all night. Stoops was to prove a perfect counterpoint to super-star sideman Greg Liesz. Back to Late For The Sky with ‘Fountain Of Sorrow’, as Browne shifted stage right to the ivories. He was running a tight ship, which meant the band worked as a team unit, which conversely lead to impeccably tasteful playing across the board in all departments.

Lifting a telecaster, Browne expressed that the next composition came from his first album, released more than 50 years ago. ‘Rock Me On The Water’ indicating early that Browne ‘had it’ right from the start. My plus one reminisced and shared of seeing Browne playing The Auckland Town Hall many moons ago, & packing 40 guitars onstage. Doing the math tonight it was a similar affair, only Browne’s axes were brought on and off stage by his gat tech. Some sombre news was to follow, as Browne dedicated the title track to his latest release “Downhill From Everywhere’ to the late Jeff Young, his long-term band member of 30 years who passed away in February this year. More sad news was to follow, as Browne’s endeared collaborator David Lindley was acknowledged; another who passed earlier this year in March. ’Call It A Loan’ (a co-write) was given the royal treatment; Browne mentioning that he had worked with Lindley on and off for over 50 years, with his contributions to his songs being immense.

‘Linda Paloma’ with its mariachi flavour recalled Browne’s falling in love at Mexican restaurants over a month-long period. Throughout the evening, band members were to have gradual introductions. They included the versatile Jason Crosby on violin, piano and electric keys. An early classic ‘For Everyman’ closed out the first bracket, with a brief intermission dividing the night into two sets.

Another new one opened the second set; ‘Until Justice Is Real’, showcasing backing vocalists Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, who were both repositioned front of stage and spotlit. It became apparent that with band introductions, the relationships Browne has with his players have been considerably long-term. Must be a good guy. ‘The Dreamer’ another recent number focused its lens on immigration. Of this tune, Browne noted that some of his Polynesian friends had led him to Auckland, via Hawaii regarding a sailing expedition. He acknowledged the indigenous rights for the first people, and some of the progress that has been made in this part of the world.

’Long Way Around’ shuffled along, then Browne went solo on piano for the first part of ’Sky Blue And Black.’ At this point you could feel the big songs were just around the corner. Browne slyly said “I can tell what kind of people you are.” Someone instantly shouted out “we are rockers!” – yep a fist pump from me. Then turning to Leisz, Browne nodded; “I forget I’m singing with one of the greatest slide-guitar players of all-time. Play with me Greg.” For ‘Your Bright Baby Blues’, Leisz exchanged another of his trademark lap steel solos. He was equally commanding on pedal steel and electric guitar; a true heavyweight of his craft.

Into the showcase numbers; a searing extended version of the west-coast shuffle ‘Doctor My Eyes’ got people out of their seats and up near the stage dancing. It was heart-warming to hear this classic played with such gusto, from a band that had employed restraint and nuance up til that point. ‘Late For The Sky’ had to be included, bringing the band and audience to a musical high. “It’s nice to be able to play for you tonight, this is our first full show since Japan” Browne expressed in gratitude. Then ‘The Pretender’, with the line “get up and do it again – amen”; Browne liked the idea of adding timpani – “That’d work right”? He’s got a point, it’s a dynamic song.

Late in the evening the rhythm section got their nods; bass stalwart Bob Glaub (who’s played with everyone) kept it solid throughout, while drummer Mauricio Lewak was steady, disciplined, and especially good on song endings. Overall the band seemed to all be experts in obscuring and softening notes, as if to blend with each other seamlessly a lot of times. ‘Running On Empty’ kept up the momentum to the finish, a strong closer. Appreciably Browne returned to the stage for an encore of ‘The Load Out’, initially by himself silhouetted playing piano. He paused to sneeze – what a trooper. And that was forgotten quickly as Leisz entering spotlit also ripped a brilliant solo on lap steel (just as Lindley had done many times all those years ago). Enter the band and the moments got extra-special. As per tradition Browne segued into ‘Stay’, leaving many people swaying and joyful.

Tonight’s show was a heartfelt performance invoking decades of music, as Browne ran the gamut of his discography. His vocals were consistent, and held up well after his recent health challenges. With his band backing him up impeccably with taste and polish, this was a night of simply great music, something that seems to be lessening as the world turns.

He’s coming to Australia late 2023, and I’m tossing up whether to go. The reviews have helped. Thanks.

Hi – Saw the shows in both Auckland and Christchurch. We were in New Zealand for a visit – seeing Jackson was going to be touring there was the impetus but not the whole reason for the trip. I think I’ve been to about 40 Jackson Browne concerts over the years. The first in I think 1973 in California. Opening act for Linda Ronstadt I think.

My husband is a fan as well – he’s v up to about 20 shows. We had the opportunity about 10 years ago or so, to go to a very intimate house concert for a few dozen people at the Holiday Music Motel in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. A wonderful concert at a wonderful place.

Anyway – great trip to a wonderful country – absolutely beautiful country filled with friendly people. The concerts made it all the better!

P.s You wrote a fantastic review – really captured what we saw and heard. The only comment is I don’t think they played “Shape of a Heart”.

Wish they had – one of his best songs. Of course they are all his best songs.

Saw him in Christchurch last night – very similar set list to Auckland. Quite amazing how he continues to shape his old songs that continue to be relevant today. And a class band as well, with Jason Crosby on keyboards.

Met Jackson at the airport in Wellington after his show. Was just standing by himself next to some friends waiting to check in his guitar. Didn’t recognise him at first as he was wearing a face mask, and thought that he was with my friends, so introduced myself and had a chat before realizing who I was talking to.Told him how much I enjoyed his show, and he was very humble and engaging. First saw him 50 years ago, and still in awe.

Still in the afterglow from his wellington gig. A very appreciative crowd came away feeling they had been part of something very special.

Great review Mike. An enchanting evening of listening to a living legend, wonderful music and a superb band.
