What we say...

A variable thickness face creates optimal forgiveness for off centre hits.  A “slipstream” sole reduces the amount of turf interaction at impact which means less loss of energy. A heavy sole helps lower the centre of gravity which Tour Edge say will help golfers hit shots out of any turf condition.

Our verdict:

With a loft that was 1.5 – 2 deg weaker than some on test it’s really unfair to compare the EX9 against the best for carry distance. What we will say is that its an incredibly good looking club at address, it sits really square and two testers thought they’d be happy enough with the looks to game it. Looking at our data there’s quite a large (19 yards) drop off in carry distance between our best and worst shots. These shots came from both the toe and heel which we reckon says the EX9 isn’t quite as good at preserving ball speed and managing spin as some on test.

Bottom line:

A lovely looking fairway that sets up really nicely behind the ball. £200 is a lot for a fairway from a company without a proven pedigree, which means it’s difficult for us to heartily recommend to the golfing masses.

The clincher could be the introduction of Exotics EX9 Full-Speed Impact (FSI) technology. Tour Edge has become known for power and distance focusing on ball speed at impact. This tradition to improve speed with versatility continues in the new EX9.

New Design The EX9's introduction of the Full-Speed Impact design should increase club head speed through a sloped crown and the Exotics' SlipStream sole. The SlipStream sole design helps to minimize turf drag and maintain head speed through impact. With all of this in mind, I noticed all my shots seemed to jump right off the club and I was impressed by the consistency of the ball speed. Even when I did catch a little earth, the club responded well and it wasn't a jarring experience. It sounds more like a driver than a fairway wood too. Interchangeable heel weights are still offered with the EX9 too. This provides players the benefit of enhancing their draw for distance and control. I kept the 9-gram stock weight in place but there are 6, 11 and 14-gram weights available to be purchased individually or as a kit.

Look and Feel

The EX9 has an overall traditional look but there are a few modern cosmetic accents on the sole of the club compared to it's predecessor. The club is finished in a modern black gloss on the top and a matte grey finish on the bottom. I liked the overall look of the club. It has a nice, clean design with smooth edges. You won't be distracted on the course by anything flashy or unusual with this design.

Picking up the club I was impressed by the lightweight feel. It does not feel bottom-heavy nor too flimsy. Swinging the club felt fluid and I was comfortable with the club in a short amount of time. The shaft is the standard Mitsubishi Bassara E-Series in a black finish. I was really impressed with how the shaft performed with the club and felt it matched very well with the performance of the club as a whole.

Price and Availability The EX9 Fairway Wood's suggested retail price  is $229.99. Authorized dealers will accept pre-orders and the projected shipping date is November 11, 2015. For more information visit www.touredge.com .

Tour Edge Exotics EX9 Hybrid Review

More in reviews:.

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics EX9 hybrid is a great hybrid if you want to hit high launching shots that move almost exclusively right to left.  Big time ball speed and forgiveness.

Introduction

Tour Edge Exotics has a problem.  Ask a golfer who is knowledgeable about equipment, and they’re sure to know TEE.  Among casual golfers, however, the brand is not a household name.  That may start to change as a result of the excellent, and affordable, EX9 hybrid.

The shape of the Tour Edge Exotics EX9 hybrid is quite unique.  From heel to toe it looks quite small, but it’s very large from front to back .  This, combined with a slight pear shape, almost make it look more like a better player’s 7 wood than a modern hybrid.  There is an Exotics “E” on the crown as an alignment aid, and it accurately marks the sweet spot which is distinctly toward the heel.

Tour Edge Exotics EX9 Hybrid_0013

Sound & Feel

Given Tour Edge Exotic’s reputation as a fairway wood company, I was expecting the EX9 hybrid  to have more of a metallic, “ting” to it, but, in fact, this club feels much more like an iron .  The feel is very solid and the sound is quiet with only a little metallic characteristic to it.  What is not surprising is the lack of feedback – clubs this forgiving usually make pure shots and mishits feel quite similar.

Tour Edge Exotics EX9 Hybrid_0016

Performance

There are two key technologies at work in the Tour Edge Exotics EX9 hybrid: the maraging steel cup face with improved Variable Face Thickness and the SlipStream sole.  When put together, they equate to massive distance.

The main benefit of the new face is forgiveness .  With the face being thicker in some areas and thinner in others, it provides high ball speed even when you miss the sweet spot .  That isn’t to say that there’s no penalty for mishits, but they are minimal.

The visible tech is in the SlipStream sole .  First used on in one of Tour Edge’s limited edition, high dollar fairway woods, this design is now available in many Tour Edge clubs.  The goal is to minimize friction with the turf thus generating more club speed and more ball speed.  While there’s no way for me to test the effectiveness of the SlipStream sole, I will say that the club feels like it coasts along the turf more easily than other clubs .

Ultimately what you get from the Tour Edge Exotics EX9 hybrid is a club that is very forgiving and long, launches easily in the air , and promotes a strong right-to-left ball flight.  For the vast majority of golfers, those are all very good things.

Tour Edge Exotics EX9 Hybrid_0008

The Tour Edge Exotics EX9 hybrid can hold its own, or blow past, virtually any hybrid on the market today, and that’s particularly noteworthy given the price.  As many other companies push the prices of hybrids well north of $200, the EX9 hybrid can be in your bag for $160.  A big hat tip to Tour Edge for not only making a great club, but for keeping it affordable.

Hi, how are these at holding the green? Missing greens in regulation kills me and has since I ditched my CPR hybrids years ago. Thanks

' src=

This is a mid-launching hybrid. If you need higher launch and spin, pairing it with the right shaft can help.

Thanks Matt, I actually tried the Ping G30 Hybrid and they are really nice. I don’t think you can miss hit those! Lol

Tour Edge Exotics launches EX9 fairway woods

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

  • Suggested retail: $229.99
  • Release date: Nov. 11, 2015
  • Options: 15 degrees (173cc), 16.5 degrees (165cc), 18 degrees (158cc) and 21 degrees (150cc). RH only for 16.5- and 21-degree models.
  • Stock shaft offerings: Mitsubishi Bassara E-Series and Matrix Exotics White Tie, Red Tie and Black Tie

Tour Edge has officially released its new Exotics EX9 fairway woods, which introduce its Full-Speed Impact (FSI) technology. FSI combines a sloped crown that the company says is more aerodynamic, and a SlipStream sole — also seen in the Exotics CB Pro — designed for better turf interaction. The combination is said to maximize ball speeds.

The familiar SlipStream “waves” were made to be shorter in the EX9 than its predecessors, which is said to reduce the amount of turf interaction at impact.

Also, the power grid — an area of notches on the back part of the sole — is made more narrow and rearward than in previous models to increase the spring-effect across the face.

The EX9 woods have 475 carpenter faces that are laser bonded to their hyper-steel bodies. They also have a port in the sole that comes stock with a 9-gram weight, but it can be switched out with a with 6-, 11- and 14-gram weight to increase swing weight and or add draw bias.

See what GolfWRX members are saying about the EX9 woods in our forums.

“Tour Edge has officially released its new Exotics EX9 fairway woods…” with a release date of Nov. 11, 2015. Haha! Oops!

$600 I’m guessing.

Sep 1, 2015 at 10:30 am

I heard its $229.99. Someone posted a bunch of info this morning on twitter.

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Sep 1, 2015 at 3:26 pm

Why would it be half the price of their current exotics fairway metal? Our pro shop said the TE rep told them they would buy a Ruth’s Chris steak for anyone who sold the previous model at $500+. So yeah… Markup.

Sep 1, 2015 at 4:11 pm

It’s $229.99 The press release is on the Tour Edge site. Someone posted it in the forums. It’s definitely not a mark-up. The $500 has a way bigger sole that has to cost more for tooling. Also The $500 has real deal shafts straight from the shaft OEM. These shafts are made for shafts. That is the big difference I would think. But I have never been in the manufacturing business so who knows

Why do golf companies have big releases at the end of the golf season. Buy it at retail and wait 6 months to use it? Or wait 6 months to buy at half the price. I will take the later

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Sep 1, 2015 at 9:55 am

some will say it is the beginning of the season. remeber the new season is only 5 weeks away. golf season is ridiculous, it only has a week or 2 when the season ends and starts also the lower half of the USA golf all year round cause they can with the weather.

There’s a Golf season?……..

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Sep 1, 2015 at 10:29 pm

yeah there’s a golf season, it’s year round south of the mason dixon line and may through october north of it.

Sep 2, 2015 at 6:08 pm

A lot of people in the south are just starting their golf season. Companies want to release the big products that are more expensive when the guys who have bigger bank accounts and winter homes are getting ready to go south for the winter to play golf. Makes sense if you think about it.

When I was shopping for a new fairway wood this past spring my club fitter put an Exotics in line with the other clubs I was testing. I didn’t know much about it, so he started telling me about the company. He said ‘they use a mix of metal that is toxic, so they outsource it to countries with less restrictions since the process is banned in the US.’ I handed it right back to him. All companies have a dark side to some extent…but I refuse to support a company who is purposely puts people at risk. You can argue ‘they don’t have to work for the company’, which is true, but if you are in a 3rd world country and it’s either mix toxic metals or have no income, your going to mix the dang metal. Couldn’t care less how great the club is.

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

I Seriously doubt that. LOL The clubs are made in giant cilm things and people barely even touch the clubs…go look at there youtube channel. So you are calling carpenter steel and titanium toxic…lmao The club fitter you had must be a reliable source……hahahahaha If you are that concerned why don’t you ask TEE yourself? Just saying. lol

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Really…lol They use titanium and steel…go look at their YouTube channel the clubs are made almost hands free. What a fool.

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Sep 1, 2015 at 2:35 am

Did you actually believe that? Now tell me, how many of the OEMs make their equipment, especially wood heads, in the US? I’ll give you the answer: Zero. The fact of the matter is that the stricter environmental rules in the US and most western countries make club manufacturing, especially Ti smelting/forging/casting too expensive which is one of the big reasons EVERYBODY moved overseas..

tour edge ex9 tour fairway

Sep 1, 2015 at 3:39 am

christian, To add to your point: it is THAT, plus the fact that the costs of materials and labor are exorbitantly prohibitive and therefore not cost-effective to do so in the US or any other first-world country. Plus, the EPA type people are not as easily bought or bribed in the US as they would get busted too easily, unlike in the countries we do use to make this stuff for us.

Sep 1, 2015 at 5:49 am

Well, yes, But that goes for all brands, that’s my point. What that club fitter said about Tour Edge was stupid. And wrong. Plus, Japan is hardly a dirty low wage country, and they still have production of clubs. And they also have to import all raw materials since they don’t have any/enough natural resources. Might be that the environmental laws in Japan are not as stringent as in the US.

Sep 1, 2015 at 8:20 am

So how do they import them to the U.S. if it’s toxic? Answer? The daily double.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.

2024 Memorial Tournament scores, takeaways: Scottie Scheffler surges to top after Round 2 at Muirfield Village

Scheffler's late surge put him three clear of the field heading into the weekend at jack's place.

scottie-scheffler-round-2-memorial-2024.jpg

Not even a windy, tricky day at Jack's place could slow down Scottie Scheffler. On a day when Muirfield Village played more than one stroke over par and five players failed to break 80, the world No. 1 fired a 4-under 68 to take control of the Memorial Tournament heading into the weekend.

Scheffler stands at 9 under, three clear of defending champion Viktor Hovland and first-round leader Adam Hadwin, and in prime position to grab his fifth victory of the season. Not only would a triumph on Sunday mark his fifth overall this season, but it would represent his third signature event win. This, of course, is in addition to his wins at the Players Championship and the Masters.

No player has reached five victories in a single season in a little bit of time as Scheffler aims to join the likes of Justin Thomas (2017), Jason Day (2015) and Jordan Spieth (2015) as players to accomplish the feat over the last decade. The Memorial may ultimately be just a stepping stone to more history as he could threaten the all-time PGA Tour record of nine wins in a season held by Tiger Woods (2000) and Vijay Singh (2004) if successful this week.

While it seems almost certain the 27-year-old will pay off his 36-hole lead into another $4 million winner's check, Scheffler will still need his best over the second half of this tournament given the names that lurk.

That, of course, includes the man who conquered Muirfield Village a season ago. Hovland holed three back-nine birdies to get in the house at 6 under and directly beneath Scheffler's name on the leaderboard. After a slow start to his year, the reigning FedEx Cup champion has continued his resurgence, which first surfaced at the PGA Championship.

Even without his best from tee to green, PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele is still right there at 3 under. Channeling some back-nine heroics to turn wayward shots into wonderful moments, Schauffele is trying his best to pace with the world No. 1 and stands alongside names like Rory McIlroy and Tony Finau, both of whom are in need of a massive Moving Day if they are to usurp the top name in the game.

1. Scottie Scheffler (-9)

It's just not a fair fight when the best driver in the world is also the best iron player in the world and just so happens to have the best short game in the world. Scheffler's Friday was impressive for a number of reasons, but the biggest shake of the head had to come on the par-4 10th when he yanked his second shot into proverbial jail. Doing well to keep his third on the green, Scheffler strutted his par putt in from 15 feet to remain bogey free at the time.

After a couple of sloppy squares followed, the world No. 1 laced the long iron of the day into the par-5 15th to set up an eagle and get both mistakes back. A birdie from the fairway bunker on the 18th put a bow on a closing stretch that saw him go from tied for the lead to leading by three.

"I think I had about 235 pin," Scheffler said of his shot into No. 15. "It was just a kind of nice hold 3-iron and, yeah, felt like I had a good number, and it's nice when I have a number where I want to cut it and the pin's on the right and that was one of those instances. So I was able to hit a really nice shot in there pretty close to the pin and hole the putt."

Leave it to Scottie Scheffler to make an eagle look this easy. He leads by 2 @MemorialGolf . pic.twitter.com/UFrEqh2fEJ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 7, 2024

Other contenders

T2. Viktor Hovland, Adam Hadwin (-6) T4. Keegan Bradley, Christiaan Bezuidenhout (-5) 6. Ludvig Åberg (-4) T8. Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Akshay Bhatia (-3) T11. Collin Morikawa, Si Woo Kim, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka (-2)

When looking at the grand scheme of things, the turnaround in Hovland's game is insane. Without a top-10 finish across the first four months of the season, Hovland returned to his old swing coach, Joe Mayo, and instantly reverted to his old quality. A podium finish at the PGA Championship may only be the beginning for the Norwegian as he opened his defense effort with back-to-back 69s. He ranks second to Scheffler in terms of strokes gained tee to green and third on approach.

"It's key just finding a playable feel, something that's going to be different and actually make you hit it better, but it's still got to be simple enough for you to do under the gun because it's -- you don't have a lot of time to tinker out there," Hovland said. "It's just when the course is so hard, you got to know where the ball's going."

Fan favorites falling flat

It's a tough time to be a Rickie Fowler or Jordan Spieth fan. The two won't be around for the weekend at the Memorial, which is just an extension of what has been a miserable 2024 for both players. Fowler failed to break 80 on Friday and has continued to trend downwards ever since returning to the winner's circle last summer in Detroit. In his 21 starts since, the 35-year-old has zero top-15 finishes and has dropped 20 places in the Official World Golf Rankings.

While Fowler may not have any excuses, there's a chance Spieth does. He continues to drive the ball perhaps as well as ever while getting absolutely nothing out of his approach play likely due to his lingering wrist injury. After a solid start to his year with contention runs in Kapalua and Scottsdale, Spieth has missed five cuts, been disqualified and finished inside the top 10 only once in his last 12 starts.

2024 Memorial Tournament updated odds, picks

  • Scottie Scheffler: 1/2
  • Viktor Hovland: 13/2
  • Xander Schauffele: 18-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 20-1
  • Ludvig Åberg: 20-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 25-1
  • Adam Hadwin: 25-1
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout: 30-1

Scheffler's eagle on 15 and closing birdie really changed the complexion of this tournament and shortened the list of potential winners (possibly down to one). If you are willing to lay -200 on the best player in the world, be my guest, but I think there's still a chance — albeit slim — that Scheffler is unsuccessful this weekend. Finau at 65-1 seems a hair long after putting together a second-round 70 during some of the most difficult conditions, and he has the firepower to make up the margin if the stars align.

A hint of home helps Robert MacIntyre secure first PGA TOUR title at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

ANCASTER, Ontario – It wasn’t quite a last resort, but the call had a tone of desperation.

After parting ways with a former caddie at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Robert MacIntyre needed a fill-in for the RBC Canadian Open. A handful of queries went unfulfilled, so MacIntyre dialed up his emergency option – his dad Dougie.

The Scotsman didn’t want to inconvenience his father, who still resides in MacIntyre’s hometown of Oban, Scotland, and works full-time as head greenkeeper at Glencruitten Golf Club – but Dougie MacIntyre knows his son’s game inside and out. He coached him until he was 14 or 15 years old and was an accomplished shinty player, only without the funds to pursue his full potential at the sport’s highest level (MacIntyre describes shinty as “a cross between field hockey and organized violence”).

Dougie MacIntyre hadn’t caddied since DP World Tour Q-School in fall 2017, but this week marked a critical juncture in his son’s first season as a PGA TOUR member – the highly touted MacIntyre, 27, arrived in Canada at No. 75 on the FedExCup standings, right on the bubble to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs (top 70 after the Wyndham Championship in August). The call was made, and the answer was a quick yes – after confirming he could take the week off from work.

Robert MacIntyre’s emotional interview after winning the RBC Canadian

That call led to more than they could have imagined. MacIntyre earned his first PGA TOUR title at the RBC Canadian Open, carding a final-round 68 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for a 16-under 264 total, one stroke clear of Ben Griffin. Not only does he get the proverbial monkey off his back, after a gripping one-stroke defeat to Rory McIlroy at last summer’s Genesis Scottish Open, but MacIntyre cements exempt PGA TOUR status through 2026 and qualifies for this season’s remaining Signature Events. (He’s also safely inside the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking, meaning he can cancel his Monday tee time at 36-hole U.S. Open Final Qualifying, in which his dad was also planning to carry the bag.)

Dougie MacIntyre is the first father to caddie his son to a PGA TOUR title since Jack Slocum (for son Heath) at the 2005 Southern Farm Bureau Classic. This isn’t a permanent arrangement by any means; MacIntyre said he has a full-time caddie scheduled to start at next week’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday – which is a new addition to his schedule after his victory in Canada. (He might have liked to return home to Oban for some celebrations, he quipped afterward, but he figures a trip to Muirfield Village isn’t a bad idea.)

Robert MacIntyre pars the last to secure first win at RBC Canadian

MacIntyre is a chip off the old block, known on TOUR for his kindness and humility – which he certainly inherited from his father. MacIntyre’s parents (Dougie and mom Carol) are longtime foster parents; MacIntyre grew up with several foster brothers and sisters. The family wasn’t particularly well off; MacIntyre didn’t have the pick of the litter when it came to junior golf tournaments, but he was always loved, supported and encouraged. He grew to understand the rough upbringings of his foster brothers and sisters – some had been abused or neglected – and he learned not to take anything for granted. After his son’s victory Sunday in southern Ontario, Dougie MacIntyre gave away golf balls and towels to young fans, conversing and sharing in their revelry. He was in full dad effect.

“I think it makes you realize that hitting a white ball around a golf course isn't the most important thing,” MacIntyre described the impact of his parents’ fostering. “I mean, I've been in tears over it, kids going away from you. They become family. They have been in a tough spot. I wasn't given everything as a kid. I was given a great opportunity. My dad was obviously a really good sportsman, football, golf, shinty, didn't have the finances to really chase it, and I think it was something that my mom and dad always wanted to do. I've got two older sisters who are right into their horses, horse riding and stuff, but they even sacrificed quite a lot of that just to give me a chance.

“I couldn't play in golf tournaments as a junior because we couldn't afford it. I think that made me, that makes me fight and never give up, I think not being given anything. I mean, they gave me quite a bit. They gave me the opportunity, but never – never was I spoon-fed. I was always fighting for every bit of it.”

Dougie MacIntyre’s soft side complements a competitive edge that was also on display at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, coming to the forefront at critical moments on the weekend. The younger MacIntyre was on the verge of falling into a mental rut as he strode down the 10th fairway Saturday, having turned in 1-over 36 and sensing his grip on the tournament slipping away (he entered the third round in a share of the lead; he was four back at the turn Saturday). His dad sensed the spiral and wanted to nip it in the bud – MacIntyre has emphasized an improved mental game in recent weeks, taking negative thoughts and flipping them into a positive tone.

“He was having a wee go at me when I was walking from the 10th tee down to the fairway,” MacIntyre said. “Look, he was a sporting guy, he knows how to win, knows how to lose, he's been through it all. He could see my head going a little bit and he's like, ‘What have you been working on for the last eight weeks, 10 weeks?’ … I kind of flipped into that mode and tried to find the positive in everything.”

Robert MacIntyre's news conference after winning RBC Canadian

MacIntyre listened on the very next hole. After his tee shot caught a divot in the 11th fairway, he could have been “mumping and moaning about it,” but he told himself the lie lent itself to a cutty 6-iron. He played a 183-yard approach to the center of the green and two-putted from 20 feet. Then he played his next seven holes in 4-under, signing for a 4-under 66 and suddenly assuming a four-stroke lead into Sunday, where he withstood Griffin’s late charge (birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17) for a one-stroke win that he and his dad will remember forever.

The energy of their shared hug on the 18th green Sunday, amidst the cacophony of adoring Canadian fans, was surely felt back home in Oban. It’s where MacIntyre learned the game and what it meant to be a man. Both things coalesced this weekend, under the watchful eye of the man who has been there all the way.

“Unbelievable,” said Dougie MacIntyre on the 18th green in the aftermath, basking in the moment with tears in his eyes. He could barely speak, but the emotion said it all.

“Unbelievable.”
