Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazaryn Chuluu ( 260 Km ) Our Route today follows the main Highway due South from Ulaanbaatar for approximately 200km, then turns due West for a 60km off road run to our Ger Camp at Baga Gazaryn Chuluu. This is a very pretty location of pristine green valleys nestled amongst unusual rock outcrops located in Delgertsogt sum, Dundgovi province and surrounded by plain. The highest outcrop is a 15 km long and 10 km wide granite stone mountain elevated at 1768m above sea level. There are over 20 kinds of medical herbs, like burnet, to be found here and many kinds of wild animals such as marmot, ibex and mountain sheep. After getting acquainted with our first Ger Tent, we will head out and explore this fascinating landscape. ”

A SELECTION OF GUIDED SELF DRIVE TESTIMONIALS

Fantastic bespoke 4WD tour. We had a 3 day tour with Del. Travelled with my

Father and his good mate both in their late 70s. Del really went out of his way to taylor the tour to our needs. We all had a great time. This part of NZ is really beautiful and interesting. Lots of little surprises along the way. Brought back a lot of memories for my dad and our friend who both grew up in this area. Del has been doing this for a long time, we always felt looked after and safe. Thanks Del. Auckland

Wonderful 2 day tour with 4WD Expeditions in Queenstown area, tag-along in our own trucks - magic! Highly recommend this time of year - autumn with trees all shades of brilliant yellow, orange and red, set off the already impressive mountain and river landscape. We saw some amazing out-of-the-way spots with superb photo opportunities - truly NZ at its best.

Our guide Del was safety conscious, thoroughly professional, very knowledgeable both historically and geographically, with lots of anecdotes to make our tour come alive, nothing was a problem. Very quick and easy communication in the pre-tour phase too. His sense of humour kept us chuckling, very friendly, a good all-round Kiwi bloke with a passion for what he is doing.

A++ experience - you will not regret touring with 4WD Expeditions!. Ashburton

Del was great to deal with right from first contact and we appreciated his guidance in preparing for the day. He is easy to get on with and made sure we had a great day.

Our trip meant that we experienced un-seasonal snow in April and we appreciated his expertise, local knowledge of the area and weather conditions.

Thoroughly enjoyed another aspect of the Central Otago landscape and we look forward to being able to join him again in the very near future. Christchurch

My family and I had a great trip with 4WD Expeditions back in February. It was the highlight of our time in New Zealand - a truly wonderful way to see the countryside that tourists seldom see, while learning off-road driving skills. We started off the trip pretty easy, but we moved on to some challenging stuff that I wouldn’t have liked to have tried on our own. It was great to see how the lead vehicle took the river crossings and rougher terrain before approaching it ourselves, and Del also coached us over the radio.  There were lots of opportunities for pictures and the scenery was spectacular – every photo I took looked like a postcard! Del was extremely knowledgeable about the area, and had entertaining stories to tell about many of the places we saw. I highly recommend a trip with 4WD Expeditions. Laurel - England

Excellent 3 days. Excellent guide. (Thank you Del). Views magnificent. Tracks very good. Would do it all again. Alan - Auckland

Very good expedition. Well guided and some great places were seen. Del was very good and

informative. Bob - Ashburton

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with 4WD Expeditions. We started in Garston with a safety check and issue of radios and then followed Del in our own vehicle up over the southern end of the Hector Range and into the Upper Nevis Valley. Del has a lot of knowledge about the area and its history of settlement and gold mining. After a picnic lunch we left the Nevis for a memorable side trip to the Kopuwai Conservation Area on the Old Woman Range. Here the 4WD was more technical and challenging and after some steep climbing we were rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Central Otago landscapes.

We returned to the Nevis Road and finished the trip at the bottom of Duffers Saddle just before Bannockburn.

Del runs a professional tour with good briefings, a well equipped lead vehicle with safety gear and plenty of stops for photographs and sightseeing.

We have no hesitation in recommending Del and 4WD Expeditions for a memorable, entertaining and challenging day trip. John - Christchurch

12 Day South Island 4X4 Trek

Embark on an unforgettable 4WD journey from Christchurch, venturing deep into the breathtaking Southern Alps of the South Island. Accompanied by an experienced guide & no more than 5 other vehicles, this is the ultimate 4WD adventure.

south island 4 wheel drive tours

Experience the thrill of driving yourself through the South Island mountain country on this 12 Day itinerary. This is a Guided Self-Drive Tour with set select departures.

Day 1 - Arrival in Christchurch

Collect your hire vehicle before checking into the motel. Check into your room at the Airport Gateway Motel from 2pm. Meet the team at the onsite bar at 5pm for a tour briefing followed by dinner.

Day 2 - Christchurch to the Rakaia Valley

This morning you will be collected and taken into town for a guided 50 min Tram tour of Christchurch City. Then enjoy lunch by the Avon River before heading back to the accommodation to collect your vehicles and heading for the hills. The first drive takes you through the Canterbury Plains, over the mighty Rakaia River, and then up the incredibly scenic mountain valley to your accommodation for the night on Glenfalloch Station. This is a boutique style accommodation that is a bit “rustic”. A great dinner awaits tonight, then hear from the property owners and find out what it’s like to live on a remote high country station.

Day 3 - Glenfalloch Station to Mount Sommers

Today you will get into some real 4WDing. The track around Glenfalloch Station through to Lake Heron Station is simply stunning. Some technical 4WD areas over the shingle fans will keep you on your toes, and the towering mountains will have you stopping for photos often. Enjoy lunch on the banks of Lake Stream surrounded by the mountains. Then, stop again on the shores of Lake Heron before continuing down the Ashburton River Valley, and out to the main road at Mount Sommers. Tonight you will stay in the acclaimed “Stronechrubie” Chalets with dinner at the restaurant.

Day 4 - Mount Sommers to Blue Mountain Station

Continuing South on the main road for a short time, you will head up the very scenic and somewhat technical 4WD track through the Orari Gorge. More stunning scenery today with frequent stops to admire the countryside. Trace the river’s source onto Blue Mountain Station, and your Lakeside Chalet accommodation near the private station lake. Dinner tonight is provided by the station owner, who will also tell us all about farming in the area.

Day 5 - Blue Mountain Station to Lake Tekapo

I hope you like helicopters because your scenic flight will pick you up on the lawn outside your accommodation this morning to show you around this magnificent mountain scenery. After the flight, you will take the leisurely drive to the lakeside town of Tekapo. You can stock up at the supermarket this afternoon, just a short distance from our accommodation at Peppers Bluewater Resort. Dinner at the onsite restaurant.

Day 6 - Lake Tekapo to Waitaki Lakes

This morning travel to Black Forest Station, on the shores of Lake Benmore, through the stark landscape of the Mackenzie Country. Following the power pylon track through the station, climb to great heights with some incredible views over the mountains and Lake Benmore. You will then come back to lake level, crossing the hydro dam wall, and then to your accommodation in the lakeside town of Otematata.

Day 7 - Waitaki Lakes to Wedderburn

This morning you will run down the Waitaki River Valley, stopping for morning tea at a high country sheep and deer station near Kurow (home of Richie McCaw – All Black Rugby legend). After passing through Kurow, turn onto the Danseys Pass road and make our way over a high mountain pass. Lunch today is at the famous Danseys Pass Hotel. Continue into the Maniototo area of Central Otago, passing the historic towns of Nasby (coldest town in NZ), and St Bathans, with a stop at the character filled Vulcan Hotel. Backtrack slightly to your cottage accommodation at Wedderburn and the historic tavern over the road for dinner.

Day 8 - Wedderburn to Clyde

The drive through this part of Central Otago is stunning, with vast rolling treeless tussock slopes and eerie lakes. Some of the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed in this area (Plains of Rohan). You’ll eventually drop into the Clutha Valley and follow this through the stone fruit producing areas of Roxburgh, and steep sheep farming land with more rocks than grass, before arriving at your accommodation in the historic village of Clyde.

Day 9 - Clyde to Wanaka

After your included breakfast, travel through Cromwell and along Lake Dunstan to the wonderful lakeside town of Wanaka. After morning tea by the lake, head up the beautiful Matukituki Valley to Mt Aspiring Station for lunch at the station house. A rocking and rolling drive up the East Branch of the Matukituki River reveals stunning views into the surrounding towering mountains. Arrive at your accommodation in Wanaka, and have dinner nearby.

Day 10 - Wanaka to Queentown

Heading back through Cromwell, travel up and over the highest public road in NZ. The Nevis Valley track takes all day. Once up and over the high pass, we descend to the valley floor, following the river to its source amongst huge mountains. Several water crossings make the track that much more interesting. At the head of the valley, climb another high range, with majestic views towards Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. After the long descent, make your way to Queenstown for your last two nights’ accommodation.

Day 11 - Queenstown

For your grand finale, take the drive along the lake to Glenorchy where you board the Dart River Jet for a three hour thrill ride up this spectacular mountain river. The scenery in this area will blow you away, and the jet boat ride will get your blood pumping! Back to town this afternoon (to recover) and then meet for your final farewell dinner somewhere very special!

Depart Queenstown

Welcome to Queenstown. You will be met from your flight and transferred to your Queenstown hotel.

Renowned for its adrenaline inducing activities 'Queenstown' is synonymous with adventure. Parked on the shores of Lake Wakatipu this small alpine town is nestled below soaring vistas of The Remarkables Mountain Range. While arguably the brightest gem in New Zealand’s crown, Queenstown offers far more than an action-packed getaway.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - TSS Earnslaw cruise to Walter Peak including gourmet BBQ dinner and a farm tour

Stay 2 nights Queenstown

Take a one and a half hour jet boat safari through the remote wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park. Home to towering mountains, alpine bush, glacial lakes and icy rivers, this spectacular trip is considered one of the most scenic in the world. Following your boat journey, take a 40 minute walk through ancient beech forests over 80 million years old. Learn about the area and its history before taking a  four wheel drive coach on a 50 minute journey to the isolated hamlet of Paradise - home to many Lord of the Rings filming locations.

Collect your rental car

Queenstown to Franz Josef Glacier (via Wanaka) From Queenstown you'll cross the Crown Range - the highest sealed road in New Zealand - to arrive in the Alpine town of Wanaka, gateway to Mt Aspiring national park. Skirting the shores of both Lake Wanaka and Hawea, you will enter the small town of Makarora. Stop at Blue Pools for a ten minute minute walk through native beech forest to a glacier-fed swimming hole. Continue on through the remote seaside settlement of Haast before heading up the wild West Coast - a 600 km stretch of bush and native rainforest. Fox Glacier welcomes you first, then comes your destination for the night - Franz Josef township.

Stay 2 nights Franz Josef

Take a scenic flight over all three Franz Josef glacier icefalls. Landing high on the glacier take a two hour guided trip through some of the most beautiful terrain in the country. Your guide will choose the route as you go through a wonderland of blue ice and frozen pinnacles. You’ll have endless views of the surrounding mountains and rainforest as well as plenty of opportunities to take photographs. Sure to be one of the most memorable experiences you have while you are in New Zealand.

The drive north from Franz Josef takes you through the historic gold mining region of Ross and the town of Hokitika. You then turn east and travel along the Lewis Pass, the least travelled of the 3 main routes over the Southern Alps. A scenic journey passing through forests and the famous Maruia Hot Springs. Springs Junction is the starting point of the pass and just after is Lake Daniells Track. The alpine village of Hanmer Springs has been a favourite holiday destination for New Zealanders for many years.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Jet Boating Hanmer Springs

Stay 1 night Hanmer Springs

On the drive from Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura you will be introduced you to the South Island’s most numerous inhabitant, the sheep. As you head towards the east coast you will travel through North Canterbury’s major wine region, the Waipara Valley.

Kaikoura Township is a bustling little place with many cafes, restaurants and shops but the main reason for visiting here is the wildlife. Kaikoura is New Zealand's world famous whale watching destination. Sperm Whales can be seen here year-round while depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales.

Stay 2 nights Kaikoura

The Kaikoura Coast is renowned for its abundant marine life, and this is huge visitor drawcard. Due to the teeming food supply in its icy seas, whales, seals and dolphins are frequently spotted year round in the area.

Whale Watch Kaikoura New Zealand's only marine based whale watching company, Whale Watch Kaikoura offer visitors a once-in-a-lifetime up close encounter with the giant sperm Whale. You are also likely to encounter New Zealand fur seals, dusky dolphins and albatross. Depending on the season you may also see pilot, blue and southern right whales as well as migrating humpbacks. Often orcas can be spotted here and the world's smallest dolphin, the Hectors, is sometimes seen.

Heading north from Kaikoura, the road hugs the shore for approximately 50 kilometres and offers many opportunities to view the native wildlife such as seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. As you drive you will have turquoise waters of the South Pacific Ocean to your east and to the west the towering Kaikoura Ranges. Crossing the ‘dry hills’ of the Marlborough ranges you head towards Marlborough, New Zealand’s largest wine producing region. Blenheim sits right at the heart of Marlborough and is ideally located to enjoy an afternoon sampling the local produce. A great way to do this is to take a guided wine tour with Sounds Connection Wine Tours.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Half day wine tasting tour

Take a short drive to the small port of Picton where the interislander ferry connects with Wellington. You’ll travel along Queen Charlotte Drive, traversing the length of the Marlborough Sounds coastline. Magnificent views are abundant - so be sure to make time to stop and enjoy the scenery as you go.

Continue through the small port town of Havelock, home to a variety of cafes and restaurants. Traverse Tasman Bay passing through Motueka to arrive on the outskirts of Abel Tasman National Park.

Stay 2 nights around Abel Tasman National Park

Combining the best of the Abel Tasman, this trip showcases incredible beaches, coastal walks and native wildlife. First you’ll meet your guide and join the 9.30am Vista Cruise along the magnificent coastline to Torrent Bay. You’ll then arrive at Torrent Bay Lodge and complete a full training session and safety briefing before moving on to the water in kayaks to discover beautiful beaches, tidal estuaries and rivers.

Stop for a picnic lunch in a sheltered cove and take some time to swim, explore or sunbathe on the sand. On your return trip, if the winds are favourable, sails will be hoisted and you’ll sail back via Pinnacle Island to view the seal colony there. Arriving back at Torrent Bay Lodge, freshen up with a hot shower and re-join the vista cruise back to Kaiteriteri, arriving at 4.10 pm.

The drive today takes you along the Buller Gorge and offers some wonderful scenery as you follow this magnificent river. The town of Murchison is a quiet place and a great lunch stop.

The first major town (by this regions standard) is Inangahua. Further along the river one of the must stop places is Whites Creek and New Zealand's longest swing bridge. Crossing the river you get magnificent views of the gorge.

The port town of Westport is the largest on the Northern West Coast. The spectacular West Coast coastline guides you to Paparoa National Park and to Punakaiki.

Stay 1 night Punakaiki

Punakaiki to Greymouth You have plenty of time to explore Punakaiki this morning and to enjoy the scenic drive back along the coast to Greymouth to catch the Tranz Alpine Scenic Train to Christchurch.

Tranz Alpine Scenic train Greymouth to Christchurch Considered one of the world's great train journeys, the Tranz Alpine scenic train takes you from Greymouth to Christchurch. You'll travel across the South Island through the Arthur's Pass National Park from the west coast to the east.

On arrival into the Christchurch train station you will be met by a private transfer driver and taken to your accommodation.

Stay 2 nights Christchurch

Explore Christchurch City Following the 2011 earthquake that razed its centre and much of the outlying suburbs, Christchurch is well into a billion-dollar makeover. In the middle of the Canterbury Plains, bordering the pacific ocean, New Zealand’s newest city is an ideal gateway to exploring the middle of the South.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Christchurch Grand Tour

The Banks Peninsula offers a great contrast to the South Island's largest city. Just around a 1 1/2 hours drive from the city centre are rolling green hills, streams, golden sand beaches and small settlements that offer a unique insight into New Zealand's history and development.

The Harbour itself is teeming with wildlife and a nature cruise is a must do activity. One of the world's smallest and rarest dolphins, hectors dolphin, are often seen and cruises also offer excursions with the chance to swim amongst them.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Akaroa swimming with the dolphins cruise

Stay 1 night Akaroa

Today you head into the heart of the South Island, Mt. Cook National Park.

Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre Explorer Pass A tribute to New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary - humanitarian, ambassador and one of the world's greatest explorers - the centre showcases the Aoraki Mount Cook region and its people within a comprehensive museum as well as a 126-seat custom-designed theatre and Digital Dome Planetarium.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Glacier Explorers Mt. Cook

Stay 1 night Mt. Cook

Today you'll leave Mt Cook National Park and travel past Twizel, one of the locations for the Lord of the Rings films. Go through Omarama and stretch your legs in Oamaru, known for its white stone buildings constructed with the local Oamaru Stone.

Continue south down the coast to Moeraki, and take a detour towards the beach to see the Moeraki Boulders, a unique geological feature well worth a look. As you arrive in Dunedin, take in the city’s Edwardian and Scottish heritage reflected in the buildings around the city centre - The Octagon.

Stay 2 nights Dunedin

Go through The Catlins area and be sure to take a detour to Kaka Point to view its majestic cliffs and pounding surf. Continue through Invercargill to Riverton and Colac Bay, and then head north to Manapouri. From here you can embark on a day or overnight cruise to the remote Doubtful Sound - renowned for its natural beauty. Just a short way further will bring you to your lakeside destination of Te Anau, gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound.

Stay 2 nights Te Anau

The road to Milford Sound offers some of the most beautiful and iconic scenery in the country. From crystal clear lakes and towering mountains to lush glacier formed meadows, this area is dramatic and unyielding.

New Zealand's only native dolphin, Hectors dolphin, makes this sheltered harbour its home and its here you can take a 2 ½ tour to see and if you wish actually swim with these incredible creatures. Following a ½ hour briefing you depart on a 2 hour cruise of which around 1 hour is spent in the water with the dolphins. Black Cat Cruises has been operating since 1985 and their success rate at sighting dolphins is over 98%. Swimming with dolphins is not always possible either due to sea conditions, the dolphins' willingness to stay and play and other environmental reasons such as not swimming when there are babies around. You still manage to swim though on over 80% of their tours.

Half day wine tasting tour, Blenheim

Be immersed in Marlborough wine country with this half day wine tour. You'll be collected from your accommodation and taken through four or five wineries (depending on availability) to taste the award winning produce this region is known for. This is the perfect adventure for those who like a challenge or want to push their limits.

Glacier Explorers, Mt. Cook

Monteiths Brewery Personalised Bottle & Tour, Greymouth

From humble origins in 1868, the Monteith's family-owned Phoenix Brewery became the West Coast's most popular brewery for its strong tasting, full-bodied ale. A tour guide can make or break your travel experience. you will spend about 2 to 4  weeks with a guide on these kinds of tours, so you want to make sure that the guide ticks all the boxes. the easiest way to figure this out is to get on the phone and give them a call. tony is more than happy to have a chat about his tours, but more than this, you will get a feeling for who he is and the way he operates. in australia, individual tag along tour guides are not required to be accredited, which we think is crazy. ensure your safety in remote environments by opting for a reputable guide with the necessary qualifications. tony is an accredited savannah guide, ecoguides australia, and tour guides australia certified professional guide, with a cert iv trainer & assessor qualification in 4wd instruction. he also has a degree in tourism and a masters degree in science specialising in wildlife management (and he's a self-confessed "wildlife fanatic"). in addition to this, our business is the only tag along tour operator in australia approved under the savannah guides enterprise accreditation scheme. see what savannah guides is all about at  this link . "This tour is not a holiday, it's an experience" The Canning is the longest continuous 4WD track in the World, and a bucket list item for many adventurous travellers. In addition to pitting yourself and your vehicle against the harshness of the track and the environment, the historic component, both European and Indigenous, is fascinating. During this tour, you'll spend a total of 17 days on the actual Canning Stock Route, plenty of time to really enjoy being in the desert. You'll camp among the sand dunes, near historic wells, and under the shade of desert oaks and bloodwood trees. In addition to the stunning desert landscape, you'll also have the opportunity to see unique desert wildlife and plants and learn that there's much more to the desert than just sand. This tour starts at the Crowne Plaza Lasseters Hotel in Alice Springs with an included hotel room and dinner at the restaurant, and ends in Uluru/Ayres Rock with a complimentary Uluru 3 day pass and a final breakfast.  Some remote off-road experience is desirable as the track is VERY ROUGH. If you're considering this tour for your first desert experience, we suggest you should have a crack at our  Simpson Desert Double Crossing Tour  or the Beadell Highways Trek first. New Tour for 2025! Beadell Highways Trek. Alice Springs to Coober Pedy. 15 Nights (incl. Surveyor General's Cnr)

$5775 per vehicle incl. 2 people. 8 vehicles max. off-road camper trailers ok. • 14 may - 28 may 2025 - bookings now open. .

Starting with our included first night's accommodation and dinner at Lasseters Crowne Plaza Hotel in Alice Springs, we take on several of the legendary Len Beadell's Central Australian "Highways" on this giant "C-shaped" trek. From Alice, we find the start of the Gary Highway , following this deep into the desert through some remote Aboriginal Communities all the way into WA, before heading abruptly South on the very scenic and seldom travelled Sandy Blight Road . Emerging onto the Great Central Road , we visit the Giles Meteorological Station near Warakurna, and then onto Surveyor General's Corner , on the tri-state border of SA, NT and WA.  Popping back out onto the Great Central once more, we refuel at Warburton before tackling the remote Connie Sue Highway Southwards into the Great Victoria Desert . From Neale Junction, it's a 900 km run East on the Anne Beadell Highway through incredibly remote desert country. Along the way, there are several points of interest, including the most remote fuel stop in Australia, Ilkurlka Roadhouse, and the Emu Field Nuclear Test Area . We emerge back out into "civilisation" on the Stuart Highway at Coober Pedy, where we will have a night in the underground hotel, and our final dinner together.  Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour - it is very remote and the corrugations can be quite rough. High Country Heritage Tour

From Blenheim south down the island to Cardrona near Queenstown.1250kms and a great deal of variation along the way. From the most intensive to the most extensive of land uses, from flat Canterbury plains to the steep high country mountains further south. From tiny mountain streams to great impossibly blue lakes. This is our High Country Heritage.

Welcome once again and enjoy. Our trip begins on the outskirts of Blenheim where in recent years the traditionally summer brown sheep pastures have given way to both lifestyle blocks and vineyard development as people are drawn to the regions climate and the intensive viticultural potential has been both realised and the area under grapes hugely increased. You will see as we progress across the district many well known vineyard names. In an average year this is a very dry part of New Zealand and it is normal to see the hills surrounding Blenheim looking burnt off and brown.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 1

Welcome to the Adventure Capital of Queenstown.  You will be met at the airport and driven to your accommodation.

Renowned for its adrenaline inducing activities Queenstown is synonymous with adventure. Parked on the shores of Lake Wakatipu this small alpine town is nestled below soaring vistas of The Remarkables Mountain Range. While arguably the brightest gem in New Zealand’s crown, Queenstown offers far more than an action-packed getaway. Spend time on the Gibbston wine trail and end with a meal at Michelin star chef Josh Emett’s restaurant, Rata. Take a trip down memory lane on a 100 year old steamship the TSS Earnslaw. Soak in the scenery on your walk around the lake, or venture further afield into Fiordland National Park. Head over the hill to resort town Wanaka, or re-live scenes from Lord Of The Rings by four wheel drive. Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 5

Crossing the rolling tussock lands you pass through Mossburn, the deer capital of New Zealand. Following Lake Wakatipu north the Remarkable mountain range towers over you as you approach the adventure capital of Queenstown , before heading east over the historic Kawarau Bridge and if you haven’t already done so you can take a bungy jump from the bridge, or sit back and watch others throw themselves off.  For a more sedate activity, Gibbston which borders the Kawarau River has many vineyards which are open for tastings. The Kawarau Gorge guides you towards Cromwell and for more wine tastings a side trip to Bannockburn is a must, with many award winning vineyards and winery restaurants to enjoy. Cromwell sits at the head of the Kawarau Gorge and the historic old town is well worth the visit, the buildings are now home to quaint shops and cafes. The old town buildings were relocated from the valley that now sits deep under Lake Dunstan. Continue along Lake Dunstan until you reach the historic and scenic Bendigo Reserve , which was one of Otago’s original gold mining settlements.  Well marked paths will guide you to the remains of stone cottages and other buildings from this bygone era. The Lindis Pass is one of New Zealand’s highest roads with the summit reaching 971 metres. The tussock covered hills offer an unusual contrast as you pass from Central Otago into the Mackenzie Basin. The towns of Omarama and Twizel are the last stops before you arrive at Lake Pukaki and take the Mt Cook Highway along the shores to the village. In Aoraki Mt Cook Village a myriad of activities are available scenic ski plane or helicopter flights with glacier landings to kayaking on a glacial lake and a host of walks to suit all abilities. At The Hermitage Hotel the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is a must see. Please note: There are no food shops at Mt Cook, and dinner options are limited to three restaurants. If you wish to self-cater, you must stock up before arriving in Mt Cook, or make dinner reservations in advance.

Experience 500 year old icebergs up-close on the Mt Cook terminal lake. The Glacier Explorers tour is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and one of only three in the world! Very few glaciers terminate into lakes and even fewer of them are accessible. See towering ice cliffs and floating icebergs from the safety of a specially designed boat. These boats provide a safe way to view unseen and inaccessible areas of New Zealand's largest glacier The Tasman.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 6

Your first stop today should be the visitor centre on the southern shores of Lake Pukaki . As well as a great presentation detailing the formation of the region over thousands of years you are also often rewarded with uninterrupted views of over 50 kilometres to the peak of Aoraki Mt Cook . Lake Tekapo , the northern most of the large Southern Lakes also the reflective quality that Pukaki has making the waters a bright turquoise on certain days. This busy little township is home to some of the most photographed subjects in the country, the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Collie Dog statue. It's a great place to take a scenic flight, enjoy a guided horse trek , a boat trip on the pristine lake or just enjoy the magnificent views. From here you descend from the high country through Burkes Pass and into rich farmland. Beautiful Valley guides you to the town of Geraldine before you cross the vast Canterbury Plains   towards Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula. The Banks Peninsula offers a great contrast to the South Island's largest city. Just around a 1 1/2 hours drive from the city centre are rolling green hills, streams, golden sand beaches and small settlements that offer a unique insight into New Zealand's history and development. Just on the other side of the Port Hills is Lyttelton , a busy port town that was crucial to the development of Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains. Following the road around the beautiful natural harbour the names, such as Magazine Bay, Battery Point, Corsair Point and Governers Bay, remind of the importance the navy placed on this harbour. The Banks Peninsula itself is actually the remains of a long extinct volcano, the rim of which collapsed some time ago allowing the sea to flood into and create what is now the Akaroa Harbour. In 1840 French colonists settled in Akaroa in a bid to stake a claim for the South Island. Unbeknown the British had already declared sovereignty and a long drawn out dispute ensued with the British eventually being given government. However the French stayed and made this stunning part of the South Pacific their home and still to this day the town boasts French street names and every year a French Festival is held. The Harbour itself is teeming with wildlife and a nature cruise is a must do activity. One of the world's smallest and rarest dolphins, hectors dolphin, are often seen and cruises also offer excursions with the chance to swim amongst them .

Experience majestic scenery and stunning wildlife daily on a Black Cat Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise. You’ll see the rare, native dolphin – the Hector’s or New Zealand Dolphin. There’s also the chance to spot the world’s smallest penguin, the White Flippered Little Blue Penguin, Fur Seals and other sea birds. Other cruise highlights are some majestic volcanic cliffs (including the impressive Cathedral Cave) and signs of Akaroa’s fascinating past including early Maori, French and British settlements.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 7

Head to Christchurch today crossing the hills with spectacular views of the harbour. We recommend taking the slightly longer but much more scenic route around Lyttelton Harbour.  Just turn at Gebbies Pass Road and follow the road as it passes by the bays named after the areas naval past such as Corsair and Governors Bay. Take the tunnel into the city.

Following the 2011 earthquake that razed its centre and much of the outlying suburbs, Christchurch is well into a billion-dollar makeover. In the middle of the Canterbury Plains, bordering the pacific ocean, New Zealand’s newest city is an ideal gateway to exploring the middle of the South. Go punting on the Avon River, take a historic tram ride, catch the gondola to the rim of an extinct volcano or do all three! See the world's only Cardboard Cathedral and for nature enthusiasts - wander the renowned Christchurch Botanic Gardens, or head to Oxford Terrace in the city to find a great spot to eat or drink. Drive an hour in any direction to ski, mountain bike, wine taste, whale-watch, bungy jump or play golf. Take the winding Port Hills road to the French settlement of Akaroa and tour the vines in Waipara for an authentic New Zealand wine-tasting experience.

In the Heathcote Valley, just fifteen minutes from the heart of Christchurch City, ride the Christchurch Gondola for nearly a kilometer to the collapsed rim of an extinct volcano, which exploded six million years ago. Take in the spectacular panoramic views of the central city, Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury Plains, and the distant peaks of the Southern Alps. Wander the summit complex, enjoy a coffee or lunch in the cafe, and choose one of many nature walks to explore or visit the Christchurch Discovery Rice, a dramatic reconstruction of the history of the Port Hills and Christchurch.

The International Antarctic Centre aims to recreate the atmosphere and environment of Antarctica, providing visitors with an interactive, fun and educational experience. Feel the full Four Seasons of Antarctica, where you'll experience a custom-built snow and ice experience, then warm up in the Scott Base interior exhibit, a replica Antarctic field camp or other informative displays in the gallery. You'll also learn about life in modern day Antarctica, view real little blue penguins and experience a thrilling ride in a Hagglund all terrain vehicle.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 8

The drive north from Christchurch to Kaikoura takes you through the rolling hills of North Canterbury's major wine region, the Waipara Valley . Allow time for a detour and visit Hanmer Springs for a dip in the mineral hot pools. Continue on and cross the Hawkswood Range before descending to the spectacular Kaikoura coastline - where the road hugs the ocean for the last leg of the drive.

Experience New Zealand's only marine based whale watching company. Whale Watch Kaikoura offer a once-in-a-lifetime, up close encounter with the giant Sperm Whale. You are also likely to encounter New Zealand fur seals, dusky dolphins and albatross. Depending on the season you may also see pilot, blue and southern right whales as well as migrating humpbacks. Often orcas can be spotted here and the world's smallest dolphin, the Hectors, occasionally make an appearance. Cruise in style on modern catamarans, specifically designed for whale watching, featuring large passenger cabins and outside viewing decks. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept below the vessel carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 9

Heading north from Kaikoura, the road hugs the shore for approximately 50 kilometres and offers many opportunities to view the native wildlife such as seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. One of the best seal watching locations is Ohau Point (25km north of Kaikoura), where you can observe the adults on the shoreline and the pups frolicking in the waterfall, just a short walk from the road (signposted). As you drive you will have turquoise waters of the South Pacific Ocean to your east and to the west the towering Kaikoura Ranges. Crossing the dry hills of the Marlborough ranges you head towards Marlborough, New Zealand's largest wine producing region. Blenheim sits right at the heart of Marlborough and is ideally located to enjoy an afternoon sampling the local produce. A great way to do this is to take a guided wine tour with Sounds Connection Wine Tours.

A short drive north from Blenheim to you reach Havelock.  The small port town of Havelock has a great variety of cafes and restaurants to choose from so plan your journey to arrive in time for lunch.  Crossing the Bryant Range you arrive onto Tasman Bay and the city of  Nelson .

The half day guided sea kayak trip is an ideal opportunity to fit a little kayaking adventure into a busy holiday itinerary. After a short safety briefing you'll be in the water, allowing you maximum time to enjoy the tranquil waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Starting at Ngakuta Bay you then paddle out of the bay and into Grove Arm. The sound is surrounded by bush-clad shorelines and sandy beaches. There will be a short stop to enjoy a light refreshment break along the way before returning to Picton.

The vibrant Nelson city centre offers an abundance of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops and along the waterfront, you will find many fine restaurants specialising in seafood to enjoy. Founded in 1841 by the New Zealand Company the region today still boasts many remarkable buildings from these early days, however it is its close proximity to Abel Tasman National Park that is one of Nelson's greatest advantages to visitors with its pristine waters, beautiful native bush and golden beaches making this an adventure seeker's paradise. Nelson is also famous for its art and crafts and you will find many local offerings - including the world-famous Hoglund Glassworks.

Nelson is a great city to explore on foot. Visit the historic areas, the famous Cathedral or relax and enjoy the atmosphere at one of the many cafes on Trafalgar Street. Nelson is also noted for its many artists, and galleries displaying their work can be enjoyed by following one of the Art trails listed locally. Around 45 minutes drive away is Abel Tasman National Park. The region offers countless opportunities to explore for visitors of every age and capability, from enjoying the golden sand beaches and clear warm waters to guided kayaking trips viewing seals and dolphins, to exploring some of New Zealand's finest walking tracks.

Experience the best of Abel Tasman on this combined beach cruise and walk tour. Cruise into the Tonga Island Marine Reserve and pause to watch the antics of the Resident Fur Seal Colony. After landing at the historic Tonga Quarry Beach, take a two hour, fifteen minute walk over forested land and around the spectacular Bark Bay Estuary, renowned for its cascading waterfalls. Rejoin the cruise at the sheltered golden cove on Medlands Beach.

Queenstown Circuit South Island Highlights - Day 11

The drive today takes through the enchanting Nelson Lakes National Park of rugged peaks, forests and glacial lakes. Your journey will take you along the Buller Gorge which offers some wonderful scenery as you follow this magnificent river. The town of Murchison is a quiet place and a great lunch stop. Underneath its sleepy farming facade is an adventurers paradise with white water rafting, kayaking, 4WD trips and some great trout fishing. Continuing on the drive today takes you along the Lewis Pass, the least travelled of the 3 main routes over the Southern Alps. A scenic journey passing through forests and the famous Maruia Hot Springs. Springs Junction is the starting point of the pass and just after is Lake Daniells Track. If you have time to take this 4 hour return walks you are rewarded with some beautiful native beech forest views and eventually the tranquil Lake Daniells. Maruia Springs has been attracting travellers for years and the natural hot springs are now located within an authentic Japanese themed resort. Outdoor hot pools are a great way to relax. The alpine village of Hanmer Springs has been a favourite holiday destination for New Zealanders for many years. Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa is a major attraction, but the alpine environment with its rivers and mountains make it appealing year round. Gentle pursuits include forest walks, thermal pools, massage therapy, health treatments and golf as well as pure relaxation in the alpine atmosphere. For more excitement try jet boating on the Waiau River, horse trekking, mountain biking, or bungy from the historic bridge. Hanmer Springs is also surrounded by forests offering over 50km of walking and mountain bike tracks. The seasons bring amazing colours, particularly in autumn and spring, while in winter Hanmer Springs takes advantage of its proximity to Hanmer Springs Ski Area and Mt. Lyford Ski Area.

Power through the spectacular Waiau River canyon with spins and thrills galore on this action-packed Hanmer Springs Jet Boat ride.
