Pig Beach Bahamas Swimming Pigs

The Bahamas is best known for its beautiful turquoise waters, the swimming pigs, amazing fishing, and great island vibes. Get luxurious by staying in 5-star hotels and dining at amazing restaurants or keep it casual and enjoy delicious local food and experiences. Or do a little of both!

When traveling to the Bahamas from Miami, you have a few options. You can go by boat, by ferry or by plane, let’s dive into these!

Best ways to get from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas

The best option by far is by plane. Flying into the Bahamas is going to be all around the best option because it’s cheap, quick, and convenient. You might be surprised to find out that a flight from Miami to Nassau is about a 35-minute trip. It’s incredibly close, at only about 180 miles away.

When flying, you literally take off are in the air for 10 minutes and then start your descent. It’s painfully quick! With this being said, I truly believe that flying is your best option. There are quite a few airlines, specifically   Jetblue , Bahamasair , American Airlines , Silver Airways , and Frontier doing multiple daily flights from Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

In addition to the quick flight time, you can enjoy a beautiful view from the plane of The Bahamas’ beautiful 50 shades of blue waters. It is truly an enjoyable experience and gets me every time. I absolutely love flying to Nassau from Miami for the convenience and the beauty, it’s a win-win.

Once you land in Nassau from Miami, it’s a relatively quick process. You’ll pull up to the gate quite quickly, and customs is usually fast. I would say if you aren’t checking a bag you can get from the plane to outside the airport in about 15 minutes. During the busy season, you may find some lines at immigration, but usually, you’ll be able to just fly through and you’ll be ready to start your vacation in no time!

  • Semiprivate Flight (roundtrip cost $600 + per person) via Golden Wings Charter or Tropix Air.
  • Private Flight (roundtrip cost starting at $4,000 for the plane) contact me to inquire.

2 Ways to get to Staniel Cay, Exuma from Bahamas for a day trip

  • Semiprivate Flight via Makers Air or Staniel Air (roundtrip cost $600 + per person)

Miami to Nassau by Boat

Nassau is approximately 180 miles from Miami. You can surely take a boat ride over; it will take you about 8 hours. The journey via boat from Miami will require a skilled captain and a boat that can handle the Atlantic oceans. Depending on the weather conditions it could be quite a rocky and long ride.

If you are sailing, this journey will take you about 3 days, and you’ll want to make a few stops at other islands and Cays on your way over.

If you are planning to stay in Nassau for a while, then a boat is definitely doable, but you must consider that is much more expensive than flying, it is a long journey that is likely more uncomfortable. If you are popping over to Nassau from Miami for a quick trip you should not consider this option as it’s not doable in that time frame.

If you are just trying to get to The Bahamas, and don’t care about what island, Bimini is about 50 miles away from Miami and can be accessed much quicker for a day trip, probably 1-2 hour boat ride. If you are just trying to escape for a quick Caribbean Island fix, you should consider hiring a boat to take you to Bimini.

Miami to Nassau by Ferry

Currently, there is not a ferry coming to Nassau from Miami. The only option of a ferry ride to the Bahamas is to Bimini. The ride is about 2 hours long and will cost $100 per person via Baleria . If you are interested in a quick getaway, Bimini will do the trick!

Enjoy a conch salad and a few daiquiris as you enjoy beautiful beaches and great island vibes.

Affordable Trip from Miami to Nassau in 2022

Day trips from Miami to the Bahamas are desirable because of the proximity (about 180 miles), and a quick 35-minute flight. Hit the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas and enjoy the island vibes as you sip a daiquiri, swim with the pigs, and chill out with the locals.

It’s not so much the affordable part that makes this difficult, but rather the convenience part. Of course, it’s doable, and you can pay around $200 for a round trip flight, but once you incorporate airport waiting time, Covid Testing, etc., it becomes not worth it to do a day trip.

The best way to experience the Bahamas at an affordable is to book a 1-night stay in Nassau. You can find Airbnb and hotels for $150 / night, check out my Affordable Beach Rentals in Nassau blog post.  Round trip flights from Miami are about $200 round trip on Jetblue , Bahamasair , American Airlines , Silver Airways , and Frontier . If you can stay one night you can have much more time to explore. My hotel suggestions are Compass Point or Orange Hill .

What to do in the Bahamas?

The Bahamas, stretching over 760 miles and containing over 700 Islands & Cays, offers many beautiful sights and activities. From blue holes to sandbanks, swimming with sharks and pigs, there are so many exciting and life-changing experiences to be had in the Bahamas.

Interacting with tourists daily, I have had hundreds of people tell me that some of these experiences were the “best days of their lives” …their words, not mine! I couldn’t agree more with that statement, and you will forever remember the Bahamas after doing some of these experiences. Check out my Bahamas Bucket List Guide for the 10 best things to do in the Bahamas.

Some of my Favorite things to do in Nassau are a Rose Island Half Day Excursion, exploring and chilling at Love Beach, snorkeling the underwater Atlas Statues at Clifton Pier, enjoying a Daquiri at the Daq Shack, and swinging into Bon Vivants for a delicious coffee!

Additionally, if you are just in town for a few days, you should check out my guides Best Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas and Best Beaches in Nassau, Bahamas . These are affordable, maybe even free activities to do while visiting Nassau.

Pig Beach for a Day Trip from Miami

Can you do Pig Beach on a day trip from Miami? As mentioned previously, planning a day trip from Miami will be quite tight on time and I suggest staying for at least one night in Nassau. There are two options for pigs in Nassau. One is Da Pig Village , they offer a great pig beach tour service and you will get to swim with the pigs and enjoy a beautiful beach.

Your second option is to book a tour to Rose Island with Float Your Boat Bahamas. We offer a half-day excursion with the option to go to Rose Island Pig Beach. This is a fantastic day and if you spend your money on anything in the Bahamas this should be it. This is a private boat experience for just you and your group, we offer transportation, and our captains are locals with the best knowledge.

Our Rose Island Pig Beach Tour includes swimming with the turtles, snorkeling beautiful reefs, swimming with the Rose Island pigs, and exploring the beautiful untouched beaches of Rose Island. This is a day to remember! Usually, about 4 hours and the cost starts at $750. Contact us today to get more info!

Is the Bahamas expensive?

The Bahamas is on definitely the higher end of things when it comes to cost and Caribbean islands. Everything is imported and therefore more expensive than in the U.S and other places. Food is one of the most expensive things you will experience when traveling to The Bahamas. You can expect to pay double the price for both groceries and eating out.

You can find some rentals for relatively comparable prices. The Bahamas is a destination for tourists therefore we have high prices here as people are willing to pay the price. Excursions, activities, etc. will all cost about $100 per person minimum.

Transportation in The Bahamas

Once you arrive in The Bahamas, the best way to get around, especially on a time crunch would be to rent a car. There are many car rental places that start around $50 per day. You will be required to pay a $200 refundable deposit and required to fill the gas tank up when you drop off the car.

We have buses and taxis as well, but the buses are inconsistent, and taxis are super expensive. If you are coming on a time crunch, there is no better and more affordable option than renting a car. We do not have services like Uber and Lyft in the Bahamas.

What paperwork will you need for a trip to the airport to go to The Bahamas?

To enter the Bahamas, you will need an approved travel health visa and either a negative antigen test (if vaccinated) or negative PCR test (if unvaccinated) within 3 days of your travel date. Day 0 is the day you take your test. You will need to upload your test results to the travel visa sight. Upon approval, you will be prompted to pay $40. Once you make the payment you will receive your approved travel health visa and will be able to travel to the Bahamas. You will be required to show both your test and your travel visa to an agent at the airline prior to your departure as well as the customs agent when you land in the Bahamas.

Additionally, when you return to the U.S., you will have to take an antigen test within 24 hours of your departure. The U.S requires you to fill out an attestation form and upload your results prior to your departure.

How and where to take the COVID test for The Bahamas

There are testing sites all over The Bahamas, they are easy to access and have reputable testing. You will want to ensure the sites are open prior to going, specifically on Holidays & Sundays. My two recommended testing places are Eden Well & Access Medical.

The Bahamas is a fantastic place to visit, especially if you are traveling from Florida. It is so close and will be an amazing quick trip for you to experience. The more time you have the better, day trips are doable but not recommended. Come stay for a while and enjoy all the best things the Bahamas has to offer, you won’t be disappointed in your choice!

Depart from Miami: Begin your journey from a marina or boat ramp in Miami, such as the Miami Beach Marina or the Crandon Park Marina. Ensure that your boat is equipped with all the necessary safety equipment and that you have the required documentation for international travel.

Head east across the Gulf Stream: Leave Miami and head east across the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a powerful ocean current, so plan your departure time and route carefully to ensure a smoother crossing. Monitor weather conditions and sea state, as they can affect the crossing.

Clear customs and immigration: Before entering the Bahamas, you must clear customs and immigration. This typically involves visiting a designated port of entry. The closest port of entry from Miami is usually Bimini, located just over 50 miles off the coast of Florida. Ensure you have all the required documentation, including passports, vessel registration, and crew information.

Navigate through the Bahamas: Once you have cleared customs, you can start exploring the Bahamas. The exact route will depend on the specific islands you wish to visit. Popular destinations include Nassau, the Exumas, the Abacos, and the Berry Islands. The Bahamas offer stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a wealth of marine life for snorkeling, diving, and fishing.

Anchor or dock at your chosen destinations: The Bahamas provide numerous anchorages, marinas, and mooring facilities throughout the islands. Research the specific destinations you plan to visit and make reservations if necessary. Be aware of any local regulations, such as fishing or anchoring restrictions.

Return to Miami: When it's time to return to Miami, plan your route back across the Gulf Stream. Monitor weather conditions and choose a suitable weather window for a safe crossing. Follow the necessary procedures for re-entering the United States, including clearing customs and immigration upon your return.

Best DAY ever!  We took this excursion during our trip on the Carnival Sunrise.  Super convenient to meet Janay and start this amazing once of a lifetime snorkeling adventure. We snorkeled the plane wreck, the ship, saw sharks and swam with the sting rays. I have a whole new respect for sharks. I wanted to take one of those sweet nurse sharks home. We have cruised ALOT and I cannot tell you what an amazing natural experience this was. Janay provided us with amazing animal facts and info. I can’t wait to take my family back!!! How to Take a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas

Girl on Grand Bahama Island. Sitting on chair on sand, in front of blue sea.

Believe it or not, you can take a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas ! There are two ways to do it: by boat or by plane. Both options offer short transportation times and affordable transit costs, making a day trip to the Bahamas an excellent choice for those on a tight schedule or budget. Personally, I prefer taking the Balearia Bahamas Express ferry to visit Grand Bahama Island, and I’ll explain why in a bit.

Now, you might be wondering why I would suggest a day trip instead of a longer stay in the Bahamas. Well, it really comes down to time and budget constraints. For some travelers, a day trip is a great way to experience the islands without breaking the bank. You won’t have to worry about expenses like checked baggage or hotel accommodations. So, if you’re looking for a cost-effective way to explore the Bahamas, a day trip might just be the perfect solution for you.

Option 1: Day Trip from Miami to the Bahamas by Boat

using the Miami ferry to go on a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas

Taking a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas is an experience you won’t forget, and in my opinion, the best way to do it is by boat. I recommend the Balearia Bahamas Express. It’s the best ferry to take from Miami to the Bahamas; it offers affordable tickets, quick and comfortable transportation, and frequent departures. I took the Balearia Ferry from Miami to the Bahamas for a day-trip myself, and I wanted to share some helpful information about the experience.

  • What islands can I visit if I go to the Bahamas by boat? You can access every island in the Bahamas via boat. However, if you’re looking to go on a day-trip, then the two most accessible islands by boat in the Bahamas are Grand Bahama Island and Bimini Island.
  • How long is the trip to Grand Bahama Island from Miami by boat? Grand Bahama Island is about 197 miles off the coast of Miami, and it takes about 3 hours each way to get there by boat.
  • How long is the trip to Bimini Island from Miami by boat?: Bimini is 57 miles from Miami by ferry, and, takes about 2 hours each way to get there.
  • How frequent are the departures to/from Miami and Grand Bahama Island on the Balearia Express? Departure times may vary, but when I went, the boats departed and arrived every 2 hours. I was able to leave Miami at 7 AM and then take a boat from the Bahamas back to Miami at 7 PM.
  • Is the Balearia Express comfortable? Yes, the Balearia Express is extremely comfortable. You can walk around, stretch your feet, eat in a cafe, and stand on the boat deck and take in the views.
  • What are the benefits of taking a boat to Miami instead of flying there? The boat ride is a better experience than flying. On the boat, you’re able to look at the ocean while transporting there, eat at the cafe, stretch around and walk.
  • How much does it cost to take the Balearia Express to Miami? Ticket costs vary based on date, time, and season, but when I went, I paid $90 total for a round-trip ticket.

Option 2: Day Trip to From Miami to the Bahamas by Plane

Miami to the Bahamas by Plane

Which airport should I fly from in Miami to get to the Bahamas? FLL and MIA are both great options, but I recommend choosing the one closest to your accommodation to save on transportation time.

Which islands can I fly to in the Bahamas from Miami? The most popular islands to visit for a day-trip are Freeport and Nassau.

What is the average flight time from Miami to the Bahamas? It varies based on your destination, but usually ranges from 30 minutes to one hour each way.

What are the advantages of flying to the Bahamas from Miami instead of taking a boat? Flight times are short and you can access different islands that are too far to reach by boat for a day-trip.

What are the disadvantages of flying to the Bahamas from Miami instead of taking a boat? Flights can be more expensive, and you’ll need to arrive at the airport early to go through security.

How can I find cheap flights from Miami to the Bahamas? Skyscanner.com is my go-to tool for finding affordable flights. Tuesdays are a good day to check for deals since airlines often reset their prices on this day. Flying on off-peak travel days like Tuesdays and Thursdays can also save you money.

Suggested Activities to do on Grand Bahama Island

Girl in the blue sea on Grand Bahama Island

When it comes to Grand Bahama Island, there are countless activities to choose from. Even if you only have a day to explore the island, you can still make the most of your trip by picking 1-2 must-see sites. Here are some of my top recommendations for activities on Grand Bahama Island:

  • Spend some time at the beach : If you do nothing but relax on the beach at Grand Bahama Island, then you’ve had a successful trip. This could very well be the only activity that you participate in during your day trip to the Bahamas, and that would be a day well spent. There are several beaches to choose from on the Island, but some of the highest-rated beaches are Gold Rock Beach ,  Taino Beach ,   and   Fortune Beach . If a beach is next to a resort, then you can pay the resort a small fee for a “day pass” in order to use their facilities (pool, etc.) and sit on the beachfront.
  • Lucaya Marketplace : Located in  Port Lucaya , The Lucaya Marketplace is a great place to visit in order to experience the culture of Grand Bahama Island. The marketplace features rows of shops that sell local hand-made goods and foods. There are a few great restaurants located near the marketplace that are worth checking out, too.
  • Lucayan National Park : Lucayan National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Grand Bahama Island. A few scenes from Jurassic Park filmed in the park. Visitors can snorkel along the underwater cave system or simply walk around and enjoy.
  • Garden of the Groves : This is a beautiful garden on the island. Here, you can view diverse wildlife and have lunch in the middle of the landscape.
  • Swim with dolphins, Flamingos & pigs!: Grand Bahama Island offers opportunities to experience the Caribbean with lots of wildlife; including, dolphins, flamingos, and pigs. The pig swim is perhaps the most unique, ad what you might see several Instagram pictures of when researching the island.

Suggested Activities to do on Bimini Island

Another island to consider visiting on a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas is Bimini. It’s a bit closer than Grand Bahama Island and has plenty to offer visitors in terms of culture, history, and natural beauty. Here are some of the best things to do on a day trip to Bimini Island:

  • Visit Sapona : A concrete ship constructed by Henry Ford during World War I, currently rests as an upright wreck in 14 feet of water.
  • Explore the Bimini Shark Lab : This research facility is dedicated to studying the behavior and biology of sharks. You can take a tour and learn about the different species of sharks that inhabit the waters around Bimini.
  • Checkout the Dolphin House Museum : a unique and fascinating attraction created by local artist and historian, Ashley Saunders.
  • Go Scuba Diving: Bimini, Bahamas offers divers the opportunity to explore vibrant coral reefs, encounter diverse marine life, and discover fascinating underwater wrecks. There are many reefs to check out on Bimini, including the famous Rainbow Reef .
  • Spend the Day at Radio Beach :  a stunning, crescent-shaped beach with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand that offers visitors the perfect spot to relax and soak up the tropical sun.

Miami is such a fun city and one of the best party cities in the USA , but it’s also worth exploring the nearby day trips. One of the coolest things I’ve done is to go on a day trip to the Bahamas, and I was amazed at how accessible it was from the United States. It was surreal to wake up in one country, spend the day in another, and be back in the USA by nightfall.

If you’re planning a day trip to the Bahamas from Miami, I highly recommend taking the ferry to get the full experience, just as I did. If you have any questions, comments, or additional suggestions for readers, please feel free to drop them in the comments below.

That’s awesome! I would love to go to Bimini! The water looks incredible!

do you need a pass port for this

They did check our passports when we returned to the USA from the Bahamas; so yes I do recommend bringing your passport!

If we do not have one that means we can’t go?

I suggest checking with the embassy or the ferry company that you plan on taking. However, per the Balearia website you do need a passport. They state: “*Note that Birth Certificates, Photo I. D, and naturalization documents ( Naturalization certificate) will no longer be accepted* Only PASSPORTS will be accepted for international travel. This applies to our day trip and overnight packages.”

I flew with Bahamas Island Travel and did a Day Trip. They flew us into Staniel Cay and we played with Pigs, swam with sharks, went snorkeling where James Bond was and on a sunken airplane, and did a bunch more stops! Instead of spending hours on a boat, they flew us on a private jet for a great price! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! check them out! BAHAMAS ISLAND TRAVEL DAY TRIP!

That sounds like an awesome time! I’m glad you had that experience and I will look into them! 🙂

I absolutely LOVE the Bahamas and have been on several vacations in this beautiful country many times. After all, boat trips From Miami to Bahamas are a popular way to spend a vacation!

Miami is such a great city with so much to do and the Bahamas is nearby, so you can visit for a quick day trip. And the beaches! If you prefer a more laid back Miami vacay, I recommend you read this: Beautiful And Quiet Beaches in Miami

The Bahamas is a short 110 miles give or take depending on which island you are visiting from the coast of Florida.

Both Miami and the Bahamas have beautiful beaches. The Bahamas including Grand Bahama Island and Bimini Islands are both easy to get to with a short boat ride. Booking a ferry is a great way to get to many of the islands.

Pig Beach Exuma Bahamas

There are several great options for Bahamas day trips from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and other South Florida locations.

Are you thinking about taking a boat trip to the Bahama Islands? This article is for you. Let’s dig into basics first before we get to the specifics of booking your Miami to Bahamas Boat Trips .

How long are Boat Trips From Miami to Bahamas?

The average Miami to the Bahamas boat ride is roughly 3 hours.  Many ferries reach top speeds of more than 30 knots. You can also drive your car onto several of the ferries.

What is the best time of year to go to the Bahamas?

The best time to go to Miami or the Bahamas is from December to April. This is when the weather is the nicest, and you can avoid hurricane season.

The weather is still warm and perfect for sightseeing, water sports or lying on the beach. Truly any Bahama Island is the perfect place for a sun-kissed vacation any time of the year.

What is the cost of a Miami to Bahamas boat trip?

A sun-drenched Bahamas day trip can range in price, but you can expect to spend around $300 per person.

Do you need a valid passport to go to the Bahamas?

U.S. citizens are generally required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to the Bahamas, as well as proof of anticipated departure from The Bahamas.  A visa is not required for tourist travel up to 90 days.

If you are on a contained trip such as a cruise, you may not need a passport but will likely need birth certificates, but it is best to check with the individual cruise line. Also, it’s also a good idea to check on vaccine requirements as some hotels may only allow fully vaccinated travelers, although this is changing by the day.

Can you jet ski from Florida to the Bahamas?

This question surprised me because I have actually never thought about it. Technically you can jet ski from Miami which is about 70 miles from the nearest Bahamian island. However, you should be experienced at jet skiing, need to be aware of weather conditions, the Gulf Stream, and know exactly where you are going.

Where else can you depart from South Florida to get to the Bahamas?

Port Everglades to the Bahamas is roughly 3 hours by ferry and is a great option to consider from South Florida.

West Palm Beach to the Bahamas will take about four hours by ferry, and you will only get as far as Bimini.

There are options from the Port of Miami and South Beach to the Bahamas by ferry to Grand Bahama, Port of Freeport, takes between 3 and 4 hours.

Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas. From last report, there is currently 1 ferry route running between the United States and Grand Bahama operated by ferry company which is Balearia Caribbean. The trip is roughly 3 hours and is considered a great ferry ride. For information: Balearia Caribbean

For those that prefer to fly, you can find quick flights from Miami International Airport, Miami Florida, Fort Lauderdale Airport, or any international airport such as Atlanta or those in New York City. But your closest and largest airport for the international flight would be Miami.

What options are there for a short trip to the Bahamas?

Whether you are looking for a day cruise, one-day trip, a two-day trip, night cruise or round trip, you can find great options from many Miami hotels for package deals.

For longer than a few days, I recommend you check the itineraries for your favorite cruise ship to a Bahama tropical island. That allows you to hop on and off several beautiful islands.

What you need to know about the Bahamas Islands

The Bahamas is an archipelago of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets. The majority of the islands are uninhabited, so you’ll definitely find a secluded spot to relax on your trip if that is your goal.

Some of the most popular things to do in the Bahamas include snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with dolphins , and exploring the local culture. The tropical climate makes these islands a great place to spend a vacation.

Bahamas Air Tours

Prefer to fly? Good news! Bahamas Air Tours is the best way to fly from South Florida to the Bahamas. You can even enjoy a day trip to Exuma which is where the swimming pigs are as well as several other nearby islands. You can learn more about the swimming pigs here: Excursion to Exuma

Another popular destination in the Bahamas is Paradise Island. On Paradise Island you will find the hugely popular Atlantis Resort.

World-class casinos, theme park like atmosphere, crystal clear waters, white-sand beaches and more await you in this tropical paradise. Get more information here: Atlantis Resort Paradise Island.

There is something about Bimini that makes it so special. Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the mainland United States and approximately 210 km west-northwest of Nassau. You will find some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches right here on this island.

Sand bars seem to go on forever on this beautiful little island in the Atlantic Ocean. Want to stay longer in Bimini? Check out the World Resorts Bimini

Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay I believe was purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line . You can enjoy a full day of fun not only on the white sand beaches, but also all the many other activities that NCL has built right on the island.

Caicos Islands

bahamas boat trip from miami

A wonderful place to take a long vacation is Turks And Caicos. The Caicos Islands are midway between the Bahamas and the island of Hispaniola home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

You can enjoy a boat trip to this island, but this mode of travel will take over 5 hours from Miami Beach.

Here is a brief overview of some of the most popular boat trip options for Boat Trips From Miami to Bahamas:

Your Guide for taking the Boat from Miami to Bahamas

bahamas boat trip from miami

The boat from Miami to Bahamas is the most popular mode of transport for any Bahamas day trips. You can travel to the island with pigs (Big Major Cay) as well as viewing incredible scenes of nature and turquoise blue sea surrounding Pig Island Bahamas. However, as with every good thing, the boat from Miami to Bahamas comes with its downsides as well.

In this guide, we will let you know everything which will help you before boarding the Miami to Bahamas ferry.

Overview of the Boat from Miami to Bahamas

Here is an overview of what to expect on your one day cruise to Bahamas:

Here are some quick tips on the Boat from Miami to Bahamas

On a boat from Miami to Bahamas, you have two choices of destinations. You can choose to travel to the closest Bahamas island in relation to the United States, Bimini, which is the busiest of tourist islands outside of New Providence (Nassau), or you can opt for the further trip to Grand Bahama in the busiest cruise port of the country, Freeport, on your day trips to Bahamas from Miami.

If traveling to the closer of the two, Bimini, the ferry website says you should arrive by 11 am, though, we have found that time to be closer to noon. The journey to Freeport is also supposed to arrive before noon but rarely does that happen.

A Miami to Bahamas ferry sits ready to board in the port. A boat from Miami to Bahamas can hold many passengers.

No matter what, you are looking at a 2.5-3 hour trip on any boat from Miami to Bahamas.

If traveling on a budget, it is smart to take the boat from Miami to Bahamas which stops in Bimini, drops passengers off, and continues to Freeport. Though, beware this makes the trip longer as well.

On any Bahamas day trip from Miami, expect to arrive back to Florida after sunset around 8 or 8:30 pm.

Where do the day trips to Bahamas from Miami by ferry leave from?

According to Baleària Caribbean’s website, the company suggests you arrive at the ferry port in Fort Lauderdale at 5:30 am — three and a half hours before scheduled departure.

What will I see on my Bahamas day trip by ferry?

Among the many things you will see on a boat from Miami to Bahamas day trip are wonderful white sand beaches, beautiful resorts, and lively and exotic sea coral. However, by taking the ferry, you will miss several key features of the Bahamas’ Exuma Cays that you would otherwise get the opportunity to see by taking an air tour. Among the things to see by flying to the Bahamas that you won’t see via ferry are:

  • Pig Island Bahamas
  • Bitter Guana Cay endangered iguanas
  • Compass Cay sharks
  • James Bond’s 007 Thunderball Grotto
  • Colombian cartel underwater plane wreck
  • Staniel Cay Yacht Club

. . . And much more!

The Compass Cay sharks are awaiting on your Bahamas day trip from Miami. A boat from Miami to Bahamas can get you there in three hours.

Some downsides of the Bahamas day trip from Miami by ferry

It seems from the ferry service’s online schedule, from the time you arrive at the Fort Lauderdale ferry port until the time you return to the port at night, you will have spent 11-12 hours of your day either at the ferry ports or traveling to/ from on your boat from Miami to Bahamas. That doesn’t leave a lot of time to go on your destination excursions and adventures after your ferry from Fort Lauderdale to Bahamas.

In small print at the bottom of the website, you are notified that the schedule can be changed at any time without notice. We wouldn’t want to spend any more Miami to Bahamas boat time on schedule changes.

The website says each vessel has on-board WiFi, though, their collection of bad reviews on TripAdvisor would warn otherwise (more on that below) on ferries offered as day trips to Bahamas from Miami.

The pigs of Pig Island can be reached via Miami to Bahamas ferry. The boat from Miami to Bahamas is usually crowded so book early.

Alternate to the Miami to Bahamas ferry: Day trip via Plane

Aboard a private aircraft, which every seat is a window seat with the largest aircraft viewing windows in the world, you will be afforded the opportunity to see what astronauts call the most beautiful piece of Earth from space. If that can’t bring back the romance of flying, we don’t know what can.

There are many more reasons to take a one day cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale through the air, but the main reason is that we save you the time you wouldn’t have traveling by boat from Miami to Bahamas ferry. Imagine 11-12 hours in transport and in waiting queues.

Traveling from Miami to The Bahamas: Your Best Options

We all need a bit of a break from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, with seaside holidays being ideal for some relaxation and rest. If you live in or close to Miami and wish to get away from the country, consider visiting The Bahamas for a beautiful and vibrant experience.

Even if you intend to move to The Bahamas , you will still need to figure out a solid way to travel.

Now, this might sound excessive, especially if you just want to take a day or weekend trip from Miami. Are The Bahamas actually a realistic idea in such a case? You might be glad to hear that they are, in fact, a great idea given that they are only around 180 miles away from Miami.

This means that you have a range of options to work with, with air and water being the most popular means to make your way from Miami to The Bahamas. If this sounds exciting enough to you, hop on and cruise through this post to figure out the best way in which you can travel.

Table of Contents

Getting from Miami to The Bahamas

Getting from Miami to The Bahamas is possible in a number of ways. You can sail on the water using a ferry, cruise or boat or you can simply book a flight and land in one of the cities of The Bahamas in almost no time.

Depending on what you prefer, make your choice by finding out more about each of the ways in which you can travel. Take a look.

Miami to Bahamas Ferry

Taking a ferry from Miami to The Bahamas is one of the best and most convenient ways to travel, especially if traveling by water through a scenic route appeals to you. Of course, you will need to share the ferry with multiple other travelers, so make sure you make arrangements accordingly.

Ferries usually operate from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and not directly from Miami, so be prepared to drive or take a train to Fort Lauderdale first. From this point, you can hop on to the ferry and get to Bimini in two hours or to Freeport in 2.5-3 hours, depending on which ferry service you opt for.

Miami to Bahamas Ferry

Generally speaking, the cost of traveling on a ferry from Port Everglades to Bimini costs around $100 per person, with a return trip costing roughly $200. Make sure you book your spot in advance and reach on time with all your relevant documents in place.

Note that there might be differences in the time and cost based on the season in which you intend to travel.

If you wish to travel to Nassau, you might have to fly from Bimini instead of taking a direct ferry. You can consider some other options in such a case too.

Miami to Bahamas Cruise

A cruise is a lovely way to sail along the waters and enjoy the sights that come your way. Cruises also solve the problem of finding a hotel for the night given that many of them offer accommodation. If this interests you, you will need to ensure that you have enough budget and luggage to last you for at least a weekend.

How long it takes to sail from Miami to The Bahamas depends on the route you take and the destination you choose. Miami to Nassau will take you 2.5-3 hours, although you will also need to account for the extra hours that you spend hopping from one island or destination to another.

Cruise to the Bahamas from Miami

Various cruise lines and companies tend to operate from Miami , taking you either to Nassau or Bimini (sometimes even Freeport). If you want to avoid an entire week of traveling on the cruise, you can simply consider limiting your destination to one city and spending the day and evening exploring it fully.

Many cruise ships also take you to some of the lesser-known and quieter islands, so if this sounds more like your kind of holiday, do a bit of research and choose a liner accordingly.

Cruises usually cost around $115-$120 per night (and per person) and tend to include a host of facilities like rooms, bars, food, pools, events and more.

Miami to Bahamas Boat

How long is a boat ride from Miami to The Bahamas? If you are adept enough at driving a boat and also happen to own one, what better idea than to set sail and have a hassle-free and private trip with just you and your loved ones?

Expect a journey of a couple of hours or so from Miami to Bimini and more if you wish to travel to Freeport or Nassau. This is, of course, possible only if you have an engine-powered boat. If you opt for a slower boat, it might take you up to ten hours to make the journey, with sailboats possibly taking days.

However, if this sounds good enough to you, go ahead! This is also quite a cheap solution since you will be on your own boat.

Boating to The Bahamas

You can also choose to charter a boat from the port and from a reliable company, although this might add thousands of dollars to your trip. This is not really worth it if you only wish to spend a short period of time in The Bahamas unless the journey is more important to you.

If you do not have experience driving or sailing a boat, hire a professional or simply choose another option.

Miami to Bahamas Flight

Several flights to The Bahamas from Miami are available if a quick and effortless journey is the kind of vibe you are going for. These flights usually take only 45-60 minutes to cover, making them extremely effective ways of traveling, especially if you want to spend as much time as possible on the islands in The Bahamas.

However, do note that you will need to spend an hour or more at the airport itself to get through all the formalities and procedures, so ultimately there might not be too much of a difference in the time you spend.

You can land in various parts of The Bahamas, with the most popular landing spot being Nassau. You will also find more flight options if you choose to travel to Nassau.

Bahamasair plane boarding for Miami

You might also be able to find various flights that provide offers and packages that can give you access to more isolated islands in the country.

Flights typically cost around $75-$150 per person for a one-way journey, with return trips costing a total of up to $300.

How Long Does It Take to Jet Ski from Miami to The Bahamas?

Interestingly enough, it is possible for you to travel from Miami to The Bahamas using a jet ski. For adventure lovers, this might sound extremely intriguing and fun, but make sure you prepare yourself enough for the ride.

The first thing you should do is figure out where to start and where to stop. The best solution is to make your way from Miami to Bimini in The Bahamas, with the journey only taking you 1.5 hours to complete.

For a longer route, you can consider traveling from Fort Lauderdale to either Freeport or Bimini, both of which will take you a long time.

Make sure you also feel comfortable enough jet skiing and have enough experience to cover such a distance. Additionally, carry your US passport, get all the relevant permits and ensure that your jet ski (personal or rented) has enough fuel in it to take you to your destination.

Jetskiing from Miami to The Bahamas

Can You Drive to The Bahamas from Miami?

Unfortunately, driving from Miami to The Bahamas is simply not possible. There is no road or route in place using which you can drive your car to The Bahamas. Water divides The Bahamas from Miami, so the only thing you can do is travel by air or water.

If you wish to take your car along, however, you can do this by booking a ferry that allows for this kind of service, although this is likely to cost you a lot more, so remember to budget for it accordingly.

What You Should Account For

To make your choice when it comes to the mode of travel, keep the following elements in mind so that you and your family are as comfortable as possible throughout the journey.

  • Cost: The cost of traveling varies according to the mode of travel, with cruises being the most expensive. Apart from the cost of traveling, you will also need to account for the cost of accommodation, food, shopping and other experiences.
  • Travel Time: Flights have the shortest travel time, taking only around an hour to get you to The Bahamas from Miami. Ferries are quick too, with cruises taking a bit longer and boats taking the longest.
  • Trip Duration: Make sure you consider the duration of your actual trip too. If you only want to stay for a day or two, it is better to opt for a ferry or flight to manage the time. Cruises and boats make more sense for longer stays in The Bahamas.
  • Luggage: Consider the amount of luggage you have. This should not be much of an issue if you are traveling for a few days, but longer stays or shifts might require more luggage allowance, making flights a better choice.
  • Number of People: Some ferries and cruises might have separate offers and packages in place for group bookings, so make sure you check those out as viable options for travel.
  • Destination: Not all means of travel will take you to the destination you wish to go to. If you intend to stay or live in The Bahamas , choose a travel mode that can take you as close as possible to your final destination.
  • Weather: If you intend to travel by water, check the weather forecast to ensure that you are good to go. You should do this for flights too. Weather can also relate to the season, which can then affect the costs.
  • Documentation: Take your passport regardless of the mode of travel. Permits, booking details, identity documents, money arrangements and other relevant papers based on your individual context are important too.

The Bottom Line

Traveling from Miami to The Bahamas is possible through flights, cruises, boats or ferries.

Which travel mode you choose can depend on the cost, travel time, trip duration, luggage, destination and more, so make sure you account for all your preferences and limitations before making the trip.

Also keep in mind that visiting by air means you need a passport to enter The Bahamas , while by water you have some additional options.

Enjoy a day trip in Bahamas with this super deal of Balearia Caribbean. With the promo code ENJOY20 you can get a 20% discount in your ferry tickets. It doesn't matter if your prefer to go to Bimini, the nearest bahamian island or to Freeport, Grand Bahama, for swimming with the pigs in White Beach. With this special offer for limited time you can go by ferry to Bahamas from only $133 + taxes . This offer is only valid for booking and travel the whole calendar 2024. Get the last cheapest seats to the Bahamas now!

Day trip to Bahamas . Although a day trip to the Bahamas may seem like a short trip, it is actually a trip to paradise. Miami, and the southern coast of Florida, are only 60 miles from the Bahama Islands (58,8 miles to Bimini and 96,7 miles to Freeport, in Grand Bahama island). Bustling Miami, teeming with people, traffic jams and high-rise business buildings, is just a stone's throw away from the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean and the tranquility of the Bahamas.

The Bahamas are a group of more than 700 islands, very famous for their warm climate throughout the year, their cuisine based on fish and shellfish and their beautiful beaches, almost virgin, that will take your breath away. The perfect place to make a day trip from Miami.

You can also take a day trip to Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island, another of the magnificent islands in the Bahamas that are close to Miami and Florida. From Fort Lauderdale the fast ferry takes only 3 hours to navigate and, although it may seem like a short time, your total stay on the island is the best and cheapest option to get to know a little bit of the Bahamas. And if you like it you can always come back and stay for several days.

Those who do not know these islands can visit them on a day trip to the Bahamas, by ferry or by plane, and find out if their next trip will be a 2, 3 or 4 day trip to the Bahamas or not.If you are on vacation in Miami (or in the south of the Florida) you can also take advantage of a one-day getaway to the Bahamas. More fun for little money.

Day trip to Bahamas from Miami Lately everyone in Miami wants to go to the Bahamas: some want to take a day trip and get to know Bimini, others - the younger ones - want to celebrate Spring Break on the beaches of Grand Bahama with All Inclusive and couples prefer to relax on the white sand beaches and crystal clear water to celebrate Memorial Day, for example.

Just 2 hours by ferry from Fort Lauderdale (30-45 minute drive from Miami) Bimini is the closest Bahamian island to Florida. To get to Grand Bahama from Miami - Fort Lauderdale it takes 3 hours by ferry. Balearia Caribbean is the shipping company that makes this connection. Because the distance between Miami - Florida and these islands of the Bahamas is so short, it is easy to make a 2, 3, 4 and 5 day trip to the Bahamas and stay in some of the hotels on the islands ( Hilton World Resorts Bimini in Bimini island and Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach All Inclusive hotel , Grand Lucayan Bahamas hotel , Flamingo Bay Hotel & Marina , Grand Lucayan Light House Pointe , Island Seas Resort , Taino Beach Resort hotel , Pelican Bay Resort hotel , Castaways Resort hotel and Bell Channel Inn hotel in Grand Bahama island), some of them even with All Inclusive packages.

We recommend this one day trip to Bimini (Bahamas) or to Grand Bahama island, to all those who live in one of the following cities, or in their vicinity: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Hialeah, Port St. Luice, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Coral Springs, West Palm Beach (all Palm Beach, North and South, Royal and Palm Beach Gardens), Pompano Beach, Miami Gardens, Davie, Boca Raton and Sunrise.

Most of the time, the best way for those living near Miami to travel to the Bahams is by ferry or plane. If your vacation destination is Bimini or Grand Bahama, it is better to go by ferry from Fort Lauderdale. It will take between 2 to 3 hours by ferry. From here you can access to our search engine for ferry to Bahamas .

If you prefer to travel to other islands of the Bahamas, such as Nassau or Exuma, it is better to travel by plane. You can find cheap hotels and flights to the Bahamas from Miami at this link: Hotels in Bahamas .

2 day trip to Bahamas

Day trip to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is the city where the shipping company Balearia Caribbean has its headquarters and from where the ship Jaume II departs every day for the Bahamas (sometimes to Bimini and other times to Grand Bahama - Freeport).

Remember that if you are going to board the Bimini ferry you have to be at the passenger terminal 3 hours before the scheduled boarding date. Boarding closes one hour before the ferry departure time. After this time Balearia Caribbean will not let you access the ship. We advise you to be in Port Everglade in plenty of time to board the ferry to the Bahamas.

For those of you who live in Fort Lauderdale, or near Fort Lauderdale, an hour's drive from Fort Lauderdale for example, it is very interesting to do this one day trip to the Bahamas, whether it is to Bimini or Freeport (Grand Bahama).

Getting to Fort Lauderdale from many Florida cities will take no more than an hour by car. Miami, Hialeah, Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach are some big cities that are within a 1-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale. Other cities, such as Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar or Coral Springs, are located more or less 30 minutes by car from Fort Lauderdale and, therefore, it is very easy to get to the ferry terminal to the Bahamas with your car and enjoy your one day trip to Bahamas.

3 day trip to Bahamas

Bimini day trip . Bimini is the closest Bahamian island off the coast of Florida (USA) and the fastest way to get to the island is by ferry from Fort Lauderdale (30-45 minute drive from Miami). From Fort Lauderdale there are between 2 to 4 departures a week (depending on the month of the year), and the shipping company that does it is Balearia Caribbean. The trip between Fort Lauderdale and Bimini takes two hours and departs from the Port Everglades docks in Fort Lauderdale.

The ferry arrives at the pier in Alice Town (North Bimini) from where you can rent a golf car to explore this small island and go to one of its beautiful beaches, one of its famous beach clubs, where you can spend the day, or at the Hilton at World Resorts Bimini Hotel and Casino where you can also spend the day paying an extra admission.

During the ferry ride you can enjoy an outdoor deck and a cafeteria where you can order hamburgers, soft drinks or hot drinks. Once in Bimini we advise you to enjoy a refreshing seafood salad or grilled fish on the seafront. The lobster salad is also one of those dishes that you should not miss. Bury your feet in the white sand as your senses marvel at the culinary spectacle. Luxury turned into food.

Of course you should not forget a refreshing cocktail where you will notice the Caribbean character of its people. Ask for it with a little spice. Tabasco, lime and salt will give life to your drink.

If you like sea sports you can snorkel, swim with dolphins, kayak and paddle surf. Other sports, such as diving, feeding sharks or jet skiing, are recommended for longer stays in Bimini, from 2 to 5 day trips.

Discover the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini and prepare your next 3 or 4 day trip to the Bahamas. This hotel has panoramic views of the sea and the marina, more than ten restaurants, a casino and a roof pool that will make Instagrammers fall in love.

On a day trip to Bimini you will be between 5 and 6 hours on the island, so we recommend that you simply enjoy one of its beaches, try the local food and plan your next getaway to Bimini to spend your next vacation on the island with one of the ferry plus hotel packages.

4 day trip to Bahamas

5 day trip to Bahamas

ferry or crusie day trip

If you are thinking about which is better, whether to do a ferry one day trip or a cruise one day trip to the Bahamas, we are going to present you the advantages and disadvantages of each of them, in our opinion.

ferry one day trip to bahamas, Pros: It only takes 2 hours from leaving Fort Lauderdale to arriving in Bimini - 3 hours if you do your one day trip to Grand Bahama. Traveling by ferry to the Bahamas makes the most of your time in Bimini (6 hours) or in Grand Bahama (5 hours).

Bahamas Cruise Day Trip, Pros: Cruise ships usually have pools, bars, entertainment. As soon as you leave Miami for the Bahamas, your vacation begins. As a rule, the ferry does not have a swimming pool and has a small cafeteria.

Bahamas Cruise Day Trip: Pros: On cruises you have the option to purchase All Inclusive beverage packages. From the moment you get on the cruise you are entitled to your drinks.

You can take a day trip to the Bahamas by ferry almost every day. Some days to Bimini and other days to Grand Bahama. One day (really one night) cruises have fewer departures and less flexibility in dates. In addition, with the ferry you can travel on a one day trip to the Bahamas all year round, while cruise ships usually do these mini cruises (1 or 2 nights) normally in low season.

As you can see, doing a one day trip to Bimini (or Bahamas) by ferry or on a cruise is very different. In addition to the price, there are other factors that you must take into account when choosing your next vacation in the Bahamas. But most importantly, never give up on the Bahamas vacations, whether you're vacationing at a resort in Bimini (Hilton for example) or cruising in Nassau or Exuma.

Book your one day trip to the Bahamas as soon as possible and get the best prices and offers.

Bahamas for vaccinated tourists

Bahamas will allow the arrival of vaccinated tourists from May 1st

April 26, 2021

Bahamas for vaccinated tourists from May 1st

Updated on the April 26th, 2021

With the idea of seeking stimuli to reactivate tourism in the Bahamas islands from next May 1st, tourists vaccinated with the 2 doses will be able to travel to the Bahamas without having to present a negative COVID 19 test result.

The Bahamas islands will allow all those people who have received the full doses of immunization, at least two weeks before traveling, to the country to enter the country. Negative PCR with up to 5 days of validity is required for the rest of the travelers.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced at a press conference that: "All that will be medically required to enter the country will be the proof of vaccination and that two weeks have passed since the final dose." This measure wants to activate tourism as soon as possible, on which the Caribbean archipelago largely depends.

The prime minister indicated that anyone who has not been fully vaccinated must provide a negative PCR test taken within five days prior to arrival in the Bahamas. "This measure will greatly enhance our economy and will also help reduce the number of infections. When tourists are fully vaccinated, since they will have received all the doses, they will be able to participate in events in a closed environment where the mask would not be necessary".

This measure has been announced when several cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Crystal Cruises and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Lines) are going to start sailing in the Bahamas from June and July, this coming summer.

Warning in the United States. On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the warning level for the Bahamas this week to the highest level of health risk, the 4.

Fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of contracting and spreading covid-19 variants, due to the current situation in the Bahamas, so all trips to the archipelago should be avoided," says the updated advice from the CDC. The United States recommends not traveling to 80% of the world's countries.

The Bahamas has reported 10,000 infections and 194 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, with a population of around 400,000 people. There are currently just over 500 active cases in the nation. Not everyone has been in favor of this decision, although many sectors of the Bahamas, dependent on tourism, want to reactivate their economy as soon as possible.

As of today, April 26th, 2021, less than 4% of the total population of the Bahamas has received the first dose of the vaccine.

Bahamas will allow the arrival of vaccinated tourists

Ferry to Bahamas relaunched

Ferry to Bahamas relaunched on Febraury 2021 from Port Lauderdale (Florida) with Balearia company

February 02, 2021

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

At the same time, Balearia will reopen the ferry route between Florida to Bimini island starting on February 10th, 2021. This route will have, at the moment, a frequency of 3 departures a week, in both directions. The Jaume II ferry will be the ship that does both routes.

Balearia will retake its operations with a host of new health and safety protocols, including mandatory face masks, electronic boarding passes, enforced social distancing and temperature checks prior to boarding, and only 40% occupancy of the total capacity of its ferry.

Other sanitary measures imposed by Balearia are: plexiglass dividers have been placed in the common areas and between all the seats, the ship and the ferry terminals are subjected to a deep and extensive cleaning process before, during and after each crossing.

The company’s ships also undergo “deep and extensive sanitation” before, during and after each sailing, the company said. Balearia says it has been certified by Bureau Veritas with the Global Safe Site Covid-19 certificate, one of the first shipping companies to receive the designation. It should be noted that all travelers to The Bahamas must fill out an electronic travel form and have proof of a negative COVID-19 test that is no more than seven days old, among other requirements.

All passengers boarding from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Grand Bahama or Bimini (Bahamas) will have to show a negative PCR test for COVID-19 performed at least 5 days before the trip. Each passenger must also apply for a travel health visa.

NOTE: We recommend that all passengers verify all the necessary travel requirements at the time of their trip, both in and out of the countries they are going to visit, always before starting with the preparations and purchases of their ferry tickets.

To keep up to date and have all the information, safety and travel protocols in the Bahamas, you can visit the websites http://travel.gov.bs (Bahamas) and https://travel.state.gov (United States). The reopening of the shipping routes between Grand Bahama and the United States is expected to increase the number of visitors to Grand Bahama island and help recover the jobs lost due to Covid-19 and mitigate the economic effects of the pandemic.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

For that, Balearia Caribbean is preparing the safety and hygiene protocols (in its ships and passenger terminals) necessary to offer its customers safe transport, both for people and goods.

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

When booking your trip to The Bahamas Islands, be sure to read, understand and follow these requirements, which are mandatory and required by the government of The Bahamas

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . Also children and babies (regardless of their age) will need their own health visa (although they are not required to take the Covid test due to their age).

VACCINATED PASSENGERS

People who are fully vaccinated (2 doses or 1 dose depending on the vaccine) and who have waited as least the 14 days immunity period will be able to travel to The Bahamas without a negative COVID-19 test result.

Vaccinated passengers must provide, for their entry into the country, proof of vaccination (original card and copy of vaccination card) in addition to the approved Travel Health Visa printed on the day of travel. As we have discussed previously, this is a mandatory requirement of the Bahamian government. If you do not provide the required travel documents, boarding the ferry can be denied by the health authorities.

In case of traveling to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on a Sunday, you must bring 2 printed copies of the Travel Health Visa and Covid vaccination card plus the original.

UNVACCINATED PASSENGERS

All unvaccinated passengers over 10 years of age must submit a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test performed no more than 5 days prior to their travel date. (This requirement is not mandatory for children under 10 years old).

At the time of boarding in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and entering the country, passengers must present printed copies of the negative result of COVID 19 and of the Travel Health approved on the day of the trip. The health authorities of the Bahamas Islands are requesting these two printed reports, both the Travel Health Visa and the result of the COVID-19 RT-PCR test with a negative result. If the passenger does not provide these documents, the health authorities can deny the boarding or entry into the country.

BALEARIA CARIBBEAN'S COVID MEASURES

In order to maximize the safety and tranquility of the passengers on board, and due to the current situation, Balearia Caribbean has taken the following measures against Covid 19:

Before boarding, a member of the Balearia Caribbean staff takes the body temperature of all passengers who are going to make the trip. If the reading of this temperature is higher than 100º Fahrenheit or 37.7º Celsius, the passenger will be denied boarding on the ferry.

While in the ferry terminals and on board the boats throughout the navigation, the use of a mask or face cover is always mandatory for all passengers.

With the safety and hygiene of passengers in mind, Balearia Caribbean has installed additional disinfectant dispensers in all its terminals and on board the ship.

Plexiglass dividers and informational signs have also been placed in different areas throughout the vessel to promote safe distances between passengers and the crew members.

You can contact Balearia Caribbean directly by email ([email protected] or [email protected]) or by phone (866) 699-6988 to resolve any questions you may have.

boat from Miami to Bahamas reviews

" Fast and hassle-free day trip by boat from Miami to the Bahamas. Large ferry with lots of space and not crowded.

The cafeteria was well stocked with drinks and snacks. The seats are wide and comfortable and the price is right."

Clarise

" We bought the "business class" for $ 30 more and it was a hit. The seat is more comfortable and spacious than in economy class, the room is quieter and you can enjoy the views without being overwhelmed by people.

In addition, when you buy this upper seat, you get a soda and a croissant, which makes the trip even shorter if possible."

Anasthasia

"The most horrible way to travel I can remember. Yes, the boat took us from Miami to the Bahamas and from Bimini to Florida, but it took us 7 hours to go and 6 hours to get home.

The organization of passengers and their tickets is not present in any case. However, there aren't many better options for traveling to Bimini than Balearia."

John

" The staff on board are friendly and attentive, but there is a lot of hassle at boarding time. People don't respect anything. They have no patience. And it is very difficult to embark and disembark 500 people on a ferry, going through customs and doing immigration procedures both on departure from the US and on arrival in the Bahamas.

I think that Balearia should assign the seats as if it were a flight. I was traveling with my wife and as we were at the end of the row it was impossible to find two seats together. Everyone was telling us that the seats were taken, but we never saw anyone in them.

In order to travel together, we had to go to the boat's cafeteria and sit in some uncomfortable chairs. And this, for people over 50 and overweight, like me, is not comfortable. We will not be doing this trip again and would not recommend it for older generations."

bahamas boat trip from miami

Take a stroll along Juno Beach Pier before exploring the Loggerhead Marine Life Center © Holly Hildreth / Getty Images

Miami may boast some of the best things to see and do in Florida , but it's also a great base for exploring some of the Sunshine State's other highlights.

Maybe a charming town and some unique experiences will take your fancy. Or you feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami's busy streets (especially around spring break) to some wide open spaces.

While you may spot the occasional gator wandering out of a canal or have a muscovy duck come pester you at the local park, there much more impressive wildlife encounters beyond the city limits of Miami . No matter what you want out of a day trip from Magic City, we've got you covered.

1. Meet sea turtles in Juno Beach and Jupiter

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

For one of the best family day trips near Miami, venture north to Juno Beach and visit Loggerhead Marine Life Center , dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of local sea turtles. It's a great space for seeing these magnificent creatures up close.

For more adorable animal encounters, Jupiter's Loxahatchee River Center features interactive exhibits, touch tanks, and live aquatic tanks where visitors can view and learn about local marine ecosystems. You can also head to Blowing Rocks Preserve , where you can see the largest Anastasia limestone shoreline on the Atlantic, blasting saltwater upward of 50 feet into the air.

For family-friendly eats, stop in at Juno Beach Cafe or Jetty's Waterfront Restaurant (the latter of which has a fantastic view of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ), and Jupiter Donut Factory for a tasty treat.

How to get to Juno Beach and Jupiter from Miami:  It's possible to take the TriRail from Miami up to West Palm Beach and make the rest of the journey in a Lyft or cab. But the most convenient option is driving (yours or a rental).

Female snorkeler explores a coral reef in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

2. Explore coral reefs in three ways in Key Largo

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes (driving), 3 hours (public transport)

Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , a mostly underwater park home to brightly colored coral reefs that can be enjoyed in several ways. Get a glimpse via the underwater cam that live-streams into the nature center (and online) or book tickets for their renowned glass-bottom boat tours. Be aware these sell out quickly, but there are other glass-bottom boat tour providers near the park.

Those who prefer a closer look at the reefs are welcome to snorkel or even scuba dive in the park. You can easily spend a full day in Largo, and if you do, grab a seafood meal at a waterfront spot like Sundowners and Snooks, or something tucked away from the crowds like the quirky Mrs. Mac's.

How to get to Key Largo from Miami:  If you're anywhere near the Metrorail, it's possible to take it as far south as Dadeland, board the Route 38 bus further south and then transfer to the 301 (which can take you to Key Largo). If you're short on patience, shuttle buses like Greyhound and Flixbus can take you south slightly faster. Driving yourself is the quickest option for those short on time.

3. Have an all-day date in Fort Lauderdale

Travel time: 45 minutes

Less than an hour's journey north from Miami lies Fort Lauderdale – the perfect option for a quick romantic getaway.

Start with a stroll through the lush grounds of the Bonnet House , a quiet sanctuary complete with a butterfly garden. From there, whisper sweet nothings to your beau aboard the Las Olas Gondola  before sneaking in a romantic meal at Burlock Coast or The Katherine .

And finally, choose your own adventure: heart-pumping fun at Xtreme Action Park (complete with go-karts, laser tag and escape rooms), live entertainment at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (musicals, plays, ballets and then some), or a bit of gambling, comedy and music at Seminole Hard Rock Casino .

How to get to Fort Lauderdale from Miami:  As is the case for most destinations in Florida, having your own vehicle gives you the best flexibility. However, you can visit Fort Lauderdale by booking a ticket on the Tri-Rail or Brightline train and then using a car-share service to get around town.

Side view of an alligator swimming in river against cloudy sky in the Everglades National Park, near Miami

4. Get away from it all, Everglades style

Travel time: 60 to 90 minutes

This massive national park extends far beyond Miami-Dade County limits, and if you want to get the full experience, you'll need at least a day. Start your day at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to learn about the park and then walk along some of their nearby paved trails (make sure to try a milkshake from Robert Is Here or some bites at Everglades Gator Grill along the way).

Shark Valley Visitor Center is another beginner-friendly spot – you can rest your legs on a tram tour, hire some bikes and explore the area on two wheels, or even opt for an airboat ride (try Miccosukee Airboats ).

You'll get plenty of opportunities to see alligators, anhingas, turtles and more at either center, but if you want a more immersive experience, drive south to Flamingo, where hiking trails, kayaking, boating, camping and even on-site dining and accommodations ( Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant , should you feel so inclined) can all be found.

How to get to Everglades National Park from Miami:  Unfortunately, there are no public transit options to get from Miami to any of the Everglades visitor centers. Depending on traffic, it's just over an hour's drive west of Miami.

5. Explore a Bahamian island via golf cart in Bimini

Travel time: 2 hours and 40 minutes

Whether you've lived in South Florida a while or are just visiting, you may have wondered, "Can I day trip to the Bahamas from Miami?" The answer is yes! The journey is a bit longer than the rest of these day trips, involving a quick journey north to Fort Lauderdale and hopping on a ferry to Bimini.

Once there, you can rent a golf cart to explore all you can during your full day on the island. Snorkel around the wreckage of the Sapona (a concrete ship built during WWI), dine on conch at Joe's Conch Shack or grab a slice at Edith's Pizza, snap photos of the art at the Dolphin House Museum, and bask in the sun at Radio Beach.

You can also rent a day pass at Resorts World Bimini to enjoy their casino and other on-site amenities (but be warned, this might make you want to extend your trip for another day or two).

How to get to Bimini from Miami:  If you own a boat (or know someone who does), it's possible to sail to Bimini. If not, take the Brightline train to reach Fort Lauderdale in 40 minutes and then board the  Balearia ferry service for quick and easy passage to the island (don't forget to pack your passport).

The Van Zandt story — from the clubs in Middletown to the E Street Band to Sun City to “The Sopranos” — is told in “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple.”

The documentary features appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, David Chase, Vincent Pastore, Eddie Vedder, Bill Wyman, Bono, Darlene Love, Joan Jett, Peter Gabriel, Ruben Blades, Richie Sambora, Southside Johnny, Gary U.S. Bonds, Maureen Van Zandt and more.

“I love his enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge of music,” says Paul McCartney in a trailer.

The doc examines his time away from the E Street Band in the '80s and '90s.

“I was spiritually exhausted,” Van Zandt, 73, says. “I said what I wanted to say and no record company wanted to sign me anymore. So I walked my dog for seven years. I wanted to be very different, as different as I could be, thinking I'm never going back to music again.”

Van Zandt returned in a big way with the E Street Band, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, and as Silvio Dante on the hit “The Sopranos.”

Bill Teck is the producer and director of “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple.”

Wilson Avenue was ceremoniously renamed Van Zandt Way in honor of half brothers Steven Van Zandt and Billy Van Zandt, a playwright, on April 26.

Shark attacks in Florida, Hawaii lead to closed beaches, hospitalizations: What to know

Warm water, more swimmers and frolickers in the ocean and sharks: it's a formula that likely leads to unprovoked shark attacks on humans. recent attacks happened in florida, hawaii and california..

bahamas boat trip from miami

As summer approaches, reports of shark attacks are on the rise. The most recent? A 25-year-old woman who was in serious condition Friday after an apparent attack off the island of Oahu.

That same day, two shark attacks occurred off beaches in the panhandle of Florida injuring one woman and two teenage girls, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News , part of the USA TODAY Network.

Officials reopened the beaches in Walton County and neighboring Bay County in Florida on Saturday. Both counties changed beach flags from double-red (water closed to the public) to single-red and purple – indicating high hazard conditions and the presence of dangerous marine life.

"Walton County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife will have their boats in the Gulf to monitor the shoreline," said Corey Dobridnia, the public information officer for the Walton County Sheriff's Office, Northwest Florida Daily News reported. "We just ask everyone to be aware of their surroundings while in the water."

Washington state: Man fatally shoots 17-year-old who had BB gun, says he 'had a duty to act'

What happened in the shark attack near Honolulu, Hawaii?

The as-yet-unidentified woman, 25, was seriously injured in an apparent shark attack Friday in the waters off the island of Oahu in Hawaii near the Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor, a popular destination for shark tours, according to KHON , a Honolulu, Hawaii Fox affiliate, which was among several news outlets reporting the attack.Paramedics responded at about 2 p.m. HST/8 p.m. ET Friday and treated the woman for multiple injuries and took her to a trauma hospital in serious condition, according to Sunny Johnson, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedic supervisor, The Associated Press reported . No additional details were available.

In March, another shark attack happened on Oahu to the east in Ka’a’awa, when an 11-year-old girl was swimming – reportedly the first shark encounter in the state this year. Another attack two days later on March 4 in Waikīkī involved a shark biting off the tail of a surfboard, according to the state's Shark Incidents List .

What happened in the shark attacks in Florida?

A woman was injured by a shark when swimming past the first sandbar in the Gulf of Mexico in Walton County, west of Laguna Beach, after 1:15 p.m. ET Friday, according to the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The woman, 45, lost her lower left arm and suffered injuries to her midsection, officials said at a Friday afternoon news conference. She was hospitalized in critical condition, officials said.

Less than two hours later, another attack occurred about five miles to the east near Inlet Beach.  The victims, ages 15 to 17, were in waist-deep water about 4 miles from where the first attack occurred. One victim was hospitalized in critical condition and one in stable condition, officials said.

"We're 100% confident that this was done by a shark," Dobridnia told USA TODAY . The two attacks happened within "a very short distance," he said. "it's most likely going to be the same shark."

Beaches were closed Friday and reopened Saturday morning .

Why do shark attacks happen?

The U.S. had the most reported unprovoked shark bites (36) – two were fatal – in 2023, a year in which shark bites and fatal shark attacks increased slightly worldwide, according to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File . (Provoked bites happen when a person initiates interaction with a shark in some way, while unprovoked bites occur without human provocation.)

Florida had the most unprovoked (16) last year. That was slightly below average, but the state's extended coastline and tourism industry makes it the usual contender for the most shark activity, Gavin Naylor, director of the  Florida Museum of Natural History’s shark research program , told USA TODAY in February.

Experts don't think sharks are getting more aggressive. It's a combination of factors including people in the warm water, Naylor says on the museum's website . "It causes a lot of fear, but the reality is you’re putting a lot of people in the water on a hot day with bait fish in the water,” he said.

Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said in a note on Facebook that the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission noted how "bait fish are schooling near the shore at this time of year which may have been a contributing factor in the attacks."

Other recent shark attacks in California, Florida

A man hospitalized June 2 after being attacked by a shark was released from the hospital June 6, according to a press release from the City of Del Mar, California . He suffered injuries to his torso, left arm and hand from shark bites that happened when he was about 100 yards offshore from the beach north of Torrey Pines State Park. He was part of a group of swimmers who regularly train in the area, officials said.

A two-mile stretch of San Clemente beach was closed for part of Memorial Day weekend after an "aggressive" shark incident resulted in a surfer being knocked from a surfboard on Sunday, May 26, the Orange County (Calif.) Register reported . The beach has since reopened.

In May, two fishermen were bitten by sharks in separate incidents less than 36 hours apart in the Florida Keys, The AP reported .
