Sport in Sri Lanka

Volleyball is the official national sport but it is cricket that is more popular and the country has been generally more successful in, winning the World Cup in 1996 and reaching the final in 2007. Rugby Union, Football and Netball are also popular sports in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has co-hosted the Cricket World Cup twice – in 1996 with India and Pakistan, and in 2011 with India and Bangladesh, as well as hosting the Asia Cup on several occasions.

Getting to Sri Lanka & Visa

Sri Lanka’s main international airport is Bandaranaike International Airport, 20 miles north of Colombo. SriLankan Airlines has daily overnight direct flights from London Heathrow and many major airlines offer flights from Birmingham, London and Manchester to Colombo with a stopover.

Search & book your flights through Skyscanner  here .

Most countries will require a visa to visit Sri Lanka, please consult your country’s travel advice for Sri Lanka regarding obtaining a visa.

If you are a UK citizen, you can view the UK’s government advice on entry requirements by clicking  here . As noted, you can obtain a visa in advance which is recommended and this is the method I chose. The application process is simple and costs $35, allowing stays within the country for 30 days. Upon arrival, you simply present your confirmation at immigration and your passport will be stamped.

Getting around Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has an excellent bus and train network, although it can be a little daunting due to a lack of information available. However, I found travelling by train and bus to be an efficient, inexpensive and fantastic way to get up close to the friendly locals.

Air –  Cinnamon Air offers internal flights but options are limited, destinations include Batticaloa, Dickwella, Sigiriya and TrinComalee. Search and book your flights through Skyscanner  here .

Bus –  Travelling by bus is a great way to travel but it can be a little difficult to find travel information. Services are run by the Central Transport Board as well as by private companies and serve most cities within the country. It really is a unique way to travel, with the buses colourfully decorated and karaoke music and lights blazing on board. Tickets are never going to cost more than a few pounds and can be purchased on board.

Train –  Journeys on the train in Sri Lanka are described as some of the most scenic in the world, heading south from Colombo to Galle, or east to the hill country of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Tickets come in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class and can be booked at ticket offices at the station and journeys shouldn’t cost more than LKR 1000.

Sri Lanka’s unspoilt environment and variety of landscapes offer all sorts of possibilities for outdoor and activity holidays. Water-based activities like diving and surfing are well covered, while there are plenty of other ways to get active, ranging from mountain biking and trekking to ballooning and yoga. As for spectator sports, if you’re lucky enough to coincide with a match, a trip to watch Sri Lanka’s cricket team in action – always an occasion of huge national excitement – is an absolute must.

Of all the legacies of the British colonial period, the game of cricket is probably held dearest by the average Sri Lankan. As in India and Pakistan, cricket is undoubtedly king in the Sri Lankan sporting pantheon. Kids play it on any patch of spare ground, improvising balls, bats and wickets out of rolled-up bits of cloth and discarded sticks, whilst the country virtually grinds to a halt during international matches, with excitable crowds clustered around every available radio or television set.

Although the national team is a relative newcomer to international cricket – they were only accorded full Test status in 1982 – they’ve more than held their own since then. It’s in the one-day game, however, that Sri Lanka has really taken the world by storm, capped by their triumph in the 1996 World Cup, when their fearsomely talented batting line-up – led by elegant left-hander Aravinda da Silva and the explosive Sanath Jayasuriya – blasted their way to the title (a feat they almost repeated during the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, when they reached the final).

Not surprisingly, the success of the Sri Lankan team has proved an important source of national pride and cohesion. Although Sinhalese players have traditionally dominated the squad, the Tamil population has provided perhaps Sri Lanka’s finest ever player, Muttiah Muralitharan (or “Murali”, as he’s often popularly known). Other star players include world-class batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, both of whom currently average over fifty in test matches.

Watching a match

If you get the chance, it’s well worth taking in a cricket match, particularly a one-day or Twenty20 – the vociferous crowds and carnival atmosphere are a world away from the rather staid ambience of most English cricket grounds. The island’s principal Test-match venues are the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy and the cricket ground in Galle. One-day and Twenty20 internationals are mainly held at Kandy, Galle, the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, and the new cricket stadiums in Dambulla and Hambantota. Tickets for matches are available from the relevant venues. Note also that many of the tour operators we recommend, Red Dot Tours in particular, offer cricketing tours to Sri Lanka. For more on Sri Lankan cricket, check out the Sri Lanka Cricket website.

Many of the waves that crash against the Sri Lankan coast have travelled all the way from Antarctica, and not surprisingly there are several excellent surfing spots. The outstanding destination is Arugam Bay on the east coast, the one place in Sri Lanka with an international reputation amongst surfheads. Other leading surf spots include the south coast village of Midigama, nearby Medawatta (on the edge of Matara), and Hikkaduwa. Boards are available to rent at all these places. Various places in Arugam Bay and Hikkaduwa arrange surfing trips around the coast, sometimes combined with visits to other attractions. The surfing season runs from April to October at Arugam Bay, and from November to April at Midigama and Hikkaduwa.

Whitewater rafting and other watersports

The island’s premier spot for whitewater rafting is around Kitulgala, where the Kelani Ganga river comes tumbling out of the hill country, creating boulder-strewn grade 3–4 rapids. You can either arrange trips locally or plan something in advance.

Sri Lanka’s watersports capital is Bentota, whose lagoon provides the perfect venue for all sorts of activities, including jet-skiing, speed-boating, waterskiing, inner-tubing and banana-boating – windsurfing is also particularly good here. You can also arrange watersports in Negombo through the Jetwing Beach hotel and various other ad hoc operators. Kitesurfers head either to Negombo or to Kalpitiya peninsula, which offers superb wind conditions and a mix of sea and more sheltered lagoon. Wakeboarding is also beginning to take off. Negombo is one of the main centres, along with Hikkaduwa.

Diving and snorkelling

Sri Lanka isn’t usually thought of as one of Asia’s premier diving destinations, and although you probably wouldn’t come here specifically to dive, there are enough underwater attractions to make a few days’ diving a worthwhile part of a visit – Dive Sri Lanka offers a handy overview of what’s available. Sri Lanka is also a good and cheap place to learn to dive, with schools in Bentota, Beruwala, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Weligama and Uppuvel. Diving packages and courses are good value compared to most other places in the world.

The west coast has a well developed network of schools and dive sites. Marine life is plentiful, while there are also some fine (and often technically challenging) underwater cave and rock complexes, and a string of wrecks. Diving on the east coast remains relatively less developed, although that is changing rapidly with the opening up of new sites and some superb wrecks, including that of the Hermes , near Batticaloa, a 270m-long aircraft carrier sunk during World War II and lying at a depth of 60m.

The diving season on the west coast runs roughly from November to April, and on the east coast from May to October; pretty much all the island’s diving schools shut up out of season, although if you’re really keen and don’t mind diving in rough seas with poor visibility you might be able to find someone willing to take you out.

There’s not a lot of really good snorkelling around Sri Lanka: little coral survives close to the shore, although this lack is compensated by the abundant shoals of tropical fish that frequent the coast. The island’s better snorkelling spots include the beach at Polhena, Pigeon Island ant Uppuveli and, if you don’t mind the boats whizzing around your ears, the Coral Sanctuary at Hikkaduwa.

Sri Lanka’s huge trekking potential remains largely unexploited. The hill country, in particular, offers the perfect hiking terrain – spectacular scenery, marvellous views and a pleasantly temperate climate – while trekking through the wildlife-rich lowland jungles can also be a deeply rewarding experience. A few of the tour operators we’ve listed offer walking tours. Alternatively, good local guides include Sumane Bandara Illangantilake and Ravi Desappriya in Kandy, and Neil Rajanayake in Nuwara Eliya. In addition, shorter guided walks are often organized from eco-lodges and eco-oriented hotels, some of whom have resident guides to lead guests on walks.

So long as you avoid the hazardous main highways, cycling around Sri Lanka can be a real pleasure, and the island’s modest dimensions and scenic diversity make it great for touring, especially the hill country, with its cooler climate, relative lack of traffic and exhilarating switchback roads. The major caveat is safety: as a cyclist you are extremely vulnerable – bus and truck drivers consider cyclists a waste of valuable tarmac, and as far as they’re concerned you don’t really have any right to be on the road at all: be prepared to get out of the way quickly (in fact, it’s generally safest to get off the tarmac completely and ride along the dirt shoulder). You are at risk not only from traffic coming from behind, but also from oncoming vehicles overtaking another vehicle, who will think nothing of forcing you into the ditch, even though they’re on what is technically your side of the road.

Bikes are available for hire in most tourist towns (alternatively, just ask at your guesthouse – they’ll probably have or know someone who has a spare bike knocking around, or who will be prepared to surrender their own to you for a small price). In some places it’s also possible to hire good-quality mountain bikes. Costs vary wildly, but will rarely be more than a few dollars a day, often much less.

Yoga and meditation

Yoga isn’t nearly as established in Sri Lanka as it is in India, although many of the island’s numerous Ayurvedic centres now offer classes as part of their treatment plans, and it’s sometimes possible to enrol for them without taking an Ayurveda course. Otherwise, your options are pretty limited.

Meditation courses are mainly concentrated around Kandy.

Other activities

Balloon trips are offered by various companies, offering a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the island. Most flights are around the Cultural Triangle, particularly in the Dambulla and Sigiriya area, though flights are also sometimes offered in other areas, particularly the south coast.

Horseriding day-trips and longer tours can be arranged at various locations around the island, including Dambulla, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya, Tissamaharama, Kalpitiya and Bentota.

Sri Lanka has three gorgeous golf courses, at Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya; a number of operators offer special golfing tours.

Some glamping sites also offer extra amenities, such as yoga classes and spa treatments.

When camping in Sri Lanka, it is important to be prepared for different weather conditions. The country’s monsoon season runs from May to September, so it’s best to plan camping trips for the dry season, which runs from December to April. It’s also important to bring the right clothing and gear, including a good pair of hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and a headlamp or torch.

Bicycle touring

Cycling in Sri Lanka is a unique and exciting way to explore the country’s diverse landscape, culture and wildlife. With its winding roads, lush vegetation and picturesque villages, Sri Lanka is a cyclist’s paradise.

One of the best places to go cycling in Sri Lanka is in the hills. The region is known for its rolling hills, tea plantations and cool temperatures, perfect for long rides. Popular routes include the challenging climb of Adam’s Peak, the scenic drive from Kanto to Nuwara Eliya, and the winding road through tea country.

Another great place to go cycling in Sri Lanka is the South Coast. The area is famous for its beaches, lagoons and lush mangroves, and offers a variety of routes to suit all skill levels. Popular routes include the scenic coastal road from Galle to Unawatuna, the challenging climb up Mount Kirinda, and the flat and easy ride along the Madhu Ganga.

When it comes to gear, you can bring your own bike or rent one in Sri Lanka. Be aware that rental bikes can vary in quality, so it’s best to do some research and choose a reputable company. It’s also a good idea to bring your own helmet and other protective gear, as rental companies may not provide these.

When planning your trip, it is best to visit during the dry season, between December and March. This is the best time for cycling as the weather is dry and sunny and the roads are in good condition. It’s also a good idea to pack a good quality raincoat and trousers, as you may catch unexpected showers.

Sri Lanka is also known for its friendly and welcoming people, so don’t be afraid to ask the locals for directions or advice. They will be more than happy to help you.

In conclusion, Sri Lanka offers a wide range of outdoor activities for adventure seekers and nature lovers. From hiking and trekking in the lush mountains to surfing and water sports on the beautiful beaches, there is something for everyone. Rock climbing and abseiling offer thrilling experiences for adrenaline junkies, while whitewater rafting and scuba diving offer the chance to explore the island’s natural beauty underwater. Wildlife tours and camping allow visitors to get up close and personal with the island’s diverse wildlife, and cycling tours are a great way to explore the country’s scenic routes and experience local culture. Overall, for those looking for an adventure-filled holiday in the great outdoors, Sri Lanka is a destination not to be missed.

Experience the majestic of Kalugala Geradi Ella

Similar to the previous event, it was a Saturday early morning. I had a pretty hard time thinking of an adventure after a tough week. Even in the morning, I had the impression that I needed more sleep rather than taking a hike.

A word from our favorite patrons.

Beautiful rafting experience.

beautiful rafting experience with swimming in the river. The zip line is a little disappointing. Friendly staff. Experience very immersed in the local reality

LISA BRIGHI

Had an amazing time.

Had an amazing time, canyoning and rafting was fun and felt safe the whole time. very friendly staff that added to the whole experience. Recommend the overnight stay as the bbq food was delicious.

Anyone who seeks enjoyment with a….

Anyone who seeks enjoyment with a little bit of extreme adventure Rapid Adventure is the place.

One of the greatest things I have ever experienced. The adventures ride we had on the Rafting of 5km. A fun packed journey it was. The guides were extremely helpfull. They gave us the best experience we can have throughout the journey. The Abseiling was another great thing we did. Truly enjoyed the adventure we had. Awesome work Rapid Adventure hope to come back again to have fun time.

SHENAL ANTHONY

Best time ever.

We had an excellent team and I'm not talking about just my family BUT Ramesh, another guide (also with dreadlocks hehe) and the kind gentleman who guided us in the water rafting.

Our guides were so helpful and honestly had so much patience despite 5 out of the 6 of us who didnt know swimming.😂

Friendly people. Amazing time. Cant describe how much fun we had. If you want the adrenaline rush of your life, GO TO KITHULGALA.

So easy to book via their website. Changing rooms provided. Meals provided at extremely affordable prices.

SHAMLA ZIYAM

The guides were funny.

The guides were funny, they provide us amusement and more than other guides we saw on the river. We recommend them. Maybe they could give us more information to be sure before to start the activities, but hopefully we did already such activities before in Europe and we knew how to manage in different situations. Anyway great experiment!

Mind-blowing adventure at Gerandigala

One of the most mind-blowing adventures I've ever had and I'd love to do it again. The guides and support team are fabulous. They ensured that you experience everything under safe standards. A big thank to the Rapid Adventure team and the villagers who came to support us. Food quality also good. Utmost satisfied.

Break a leg....!!!

PRADIPA MANOHARI

Thanks a lot to the Rapid Adventure crew for exploring the incredible beauty of Knuckles mountain's nature! LAKMINI RUPASINGHE

The garendi ella hike.

Our hike to Garendi Ella last week was just super amazing! The team was very supportive throughout the hike - Thank you team! This was one of the best hikes Ive ever done! Was a good opportunity to meet new faces and build connections as well : ). Overall, it was a fantastic and memorable experience to have! ♥️🔥

Ps: Just a small suggestion to the organisers - would be great if we could better manage the time 🙃.

SHAZIN MIYAZ

Highly recommended.

Delicious meals, Friendly and responsible guiding and also fair price indeed. It was a marvelous, joyful experience. trekking through the jungle and discovering the hidden waterfall "Diya Kerella" is my favorite. Water activities are also second to none. The night at Meemure was really fantastic with you.

Keep it up, guys!!!

SITHUMI GUNATHUNGA

Highly recommended.

Highly recommended ! I would say this is one of the best experiences I had in life. Water Rafting was a perfect experience and never thought that I'd enjoyed it that much. All other activities included in Day out package was top notch ! Food was super good too. Thank you for the remarkable service. Recommending to improve on the changing room setup & keep it cleaner than it's current state.

Must try hiking trail in srilanka.

Must try hiking trail in Srilanka. Rapid Aventures team has been suppportive and professional from the beginning. Our allocated guide was so friendly and helpful, addressing all safety measures. Would recommend in summer, as it is quite hard to get there and do the full hike with rain and mist.

LIYANA CLAUDI CABRAL

Me and my friends had the best rafting….

Me and my friends had the best rafting adventure. The guides were so friendly and helpful and food was simply awesome. The rooms were clean and easily accessible. The payment was easy when you can pay in 3 installments using KOKO. Hoping to do more adventures with you'll.

SHAMEERA TW

Hotel was horrible.

Adventure part was epic. Instructors were qualified and excellent. Had a good time doing the adventure activities. But the hotel accommodation was horrible. Rooms were not clean, bathrooms equipments did not work properly. Hotel staff was not supportive. We have asked medical assistance from staff but they did not respond. Bed sheets were filthy and unpleasant odors came from rooms and sheets. Food was not great. We were promised to give a BBQ however it was not done properly and at the end it was substituted with noodles potion. BBQ did not suffice for 9 pax. Overall hotel accommodation was bad. But activity crew was fine.

DINUTH RODRIGO

An amazing experience.

Knuckles Five Peaks Challenge with Rapid Adventures was undoubtedly one of the most adventurous and unforgettable experience for life. The whole program was well organized. The crew was friendly and supportive and made sure everyone was safe during the hike. I recommend to anyone who would love an adventurous challenge. Thank you Rapid Adventures and all the best for your future events!

GEETHMI KALANSOORIYA

Food needs to improve or you can ask….

Food needs to improve or you can ask the participants to bring their own meals. The lunch did not have any chicken in it and was spoiled. We would be happy to bring our own lunch instead. The guides never maintained constant contact with the participants and was having their own fun rather than guiding the group. Schedule was perfect but there was nobody mature enough to administer it

SASHI DHARMADASA

Thank you rapid adventures.

I tore my gluteus muscles while climbing and had difficulties coming down. Rapid adventure team helped me tremendously, pretty much carried me all the way from the top. I was the last one to come down and they all waited for me and made sure I was safe. Super grateful, for everyone that was there!!!

This was my very first hike ever and sure was a memorable one.

Thank you Rapid Adventures.

RUWEEN IDDAGODA

"thrilling rapids, exceptional staff experience".

Our experience at the water rafting camp was nothing short of amazing! The adrenaline-pumping rapids and stunning scenery provided an unforgettable adventure. The camp's impeccable organization and safety measures ensured a thrilling yet secure ride. The knowledgeable and friendly staff elevated the entire experience—they were not only experts in guiding us through the rapids but also shared their passion for the outdoors. Their enthusiasm created a positive and inclusive atmosphere, making everyone feel at ease. The equipment was top-notch, adding to the overall confidence in the operation. From start to finish, the camp left us with incredible memories and a desire to return for more. If you're seeking an exhilarating water rafting experience with a fantastic team, this camp is an absolute must-visit. Five stars all the way!

Hiking, walking in nature as a recreational activity. ,teaches us to slow down, soak in the scenery, and listen to nature..

SPORTS TOURISM

Sri lanka to host adventure racing world championship.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is venturing into the sports tourism arena by hosting the Adventure Racing (AR) World Championship for the first time this year.

sports tourism in sri lanka

This internationally acclaimed sporting event will consist of several adventure activities such as trekking, cycling, paddling and navigation, and could put Sri Lanka on the map as an adventure and sports tourism destination.

An AR World Championship team led and coordinated by Craig Bycroft and Louise Foulkes – Directors of the AR World Series – met Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga, along with other officials from the ministry and the SLTPB, to discuss the event.

Bycroft and Foulkes have managed the AR World Series across six continents for many years, and have planned and staged two of the World Championships.

While Bycroft will be the Race Director, Foulkes will manage the media and live coverage of the event this year. Their handpicked team will fine-tune the best possible course for the race during their stay in Sri Lanka and meet with event partners.

The AR World Championship brings together the world’s best endurance athletes who compete for the title of World Champion.

With an estimated headcount of over 500 people including athletes, staff, media, volunteers, family and friends, this event is expected to bring in US$ 1.5 million, providing a boost to the country’s economy and enhancing Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

The championship will be streamed live to an international audience of over 100,000 viewers and a television documentary will be aired in over 100 countries to one billion homes worldwide, thereby giving exclusive media coverage to Sri Lanka.

Entries for the event are scheduled to open on 15 February with teams from all over the world  encouraged to apply for the same.

This chapter focuses on the spread of sports markets in Sri Lanka since 1977, transforming the public social provisioning of sports established under the post-independence “national economy” project. The sports consumer culture promoting cricket players in the services sector simultaneously disregard the manufacturing workers in Free Trade Zones (FTZ) producing sports goods and apparels. The “sport and development” focused on elite competitive sports also integrate the military with sports cultures, while neglecting public or state-run school sports. The articulation of “sportive nationalism” reproduces Sinhala-Buddhist able-bodied masculine sports cultures subordinating women and people with disabilities, particularly among the marginalised communities. The media-sport complex focused on entertainment and celebrity cultures coincides with authoritarian “security” state strategies, restraining access to information and freedom of speech while enforcing multiple forms of censorship.

Lanka Premier League will boost economy and international tourism

sports tourism in sri lanka

Originally planned for August 2022, the much-awaited Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2022 commenced on 6 December 2022. The third edition of the Lanka Premier League was postponed because of the economic and political turmoil in the island nation. With the conditions in the country improving since then, the excitement and buzz this time around in Sri Lanka are entirely different, especially with the fans coming in huge numbers to see the matches.

Discussing the positive impact of LPL 2022, Anil Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director of IPG Sports, the official promoter of LPL, said, “We want maximum exposure for Sri Lanka, and positive impact for the economy, from LPL 2022. I am confident that the league will also help in increasing tourism in Sri Lanka. We look forward to a top-notch LPL tournament that will deliver all the excitement expected and enjoy wider participation from both local and foreign fans.”

Sri Lanka’s tourism minister Harin Fernando is optimistic that the league will help in boosting the country’s economy and will instill confidence among others to come here and enjoy the natural and scenic beauty of the island nation.

The Minister said, “The appetite for cricket in Sri Lanka is huge and it shows in the fact that we are able to bounce back from the pandemic last year and what the nation has gone through this year.”

“The league will motivate and inspire the people of Sri Lanka to fight against all the odds. We are happy that we have been able to play a part in bringing joy to the lives of the people of Sri Lanka. Besides this, the league will certainly help to unearth some of the best cricketing talents in the country. I am certainly looking forward to the tournament,” he added.

Dasun Shanaka, captain of the Dambulla Aura team, said, “It will be an exciting experience as the fans will get an opportunity to see their favorite players playing. The league will also provide a chance for young domestic players to showcase their talent on a global stage and playing with experienced players will surely help them in becoming better players in the future. It is going to be fun, competitive, and serious. We just want to perform our best for the fans so that when they come to the stadium, they have fun.”

Lanka Premier League 2022, which is Sri Lanka’s topmost domestic tournament, with an international flavor, will consist of 24 games and will see the participation of the topmost domestic as well as international cricketers.

The Wonderful Sports Story of Sri Lanka, from its History to the Future!

A group playing beach volleyball, signifying the Wonderful Sports Story of Sri Lanka, from its History to the Future!

Sports! Of course, it is simply a part of the life of many. Besides, we can see a variety of sports in the world. Yet, it differs from country to country. However, what do you know about sports in Sri Lanka? There is a lot that you need to know about, and indeed, they are worth exploring.

Sports on this splendid island played a vital part not just today but also for several decades. It has, simply, become a part of Sri Lankan culture . Although Sri Lankans, as one country, faced different challenges since the day that it gained independence, nothing could separate the spirit and the love for sports from Sri Lankan hearts. That is what brings sports to this level by now. Thus, our aim is to discuss every possible fact about sports in Sri Lanka through this article: from history to the future of sports. Excited to know about the sports story in Sri Lanka, isn’t it? Here we go!

The National Sport in Sri Lanka, Volleyball

Every country has given importance to a selected set of things according to their relevance and considered them as their unique or national symbols.

As such, Sri Lanka, as a country, also has a set of symbols. Among them, our national sport, although Cricket is quite visibly popular among Sri Lanka, is Volleyball.

Volleyball was introduced first in 1916 by Mr. R. W. Camack who was then the Director of Physical Education at the Colombo Y.M.C.A. to Sri Lanka. Before introducing that, Sri Lankans played a similar sport called ‘Elle’. It says that, before Volleyball, Elle had been recognized as the National sport. However, in 1991 Volleyball was officially announced as the national sport in Sri Lanka.

Volleyball came as an indoor game and then with the time being it further improved into beach volleyball as well as outdoor courts. It is a worldwide sport, mostly popular in Europe and East Asia.

It is a sport which consists of two teams with 6 players on each side separated by a net.  Each team should ground the ball on the opposing side to score points. As same as in every sport, this also has a set of rules and regulations that the players must follow. In Sri Lanka, we can usually witness this as an indoor game. But, on some occasions, we can see the varieties such as beach volleyball, and sitting volleyball as well.

When it comes to the Sri Lankan context, as the national sport, it is a must to mention the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF). Wondering the role SLVF plays in overlooking sports in Sri Lanka? The following section will enlighten you with regard!

Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF)

SLVF is the main governing body related to Volleyball in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1951 liaised with 99 organizations and managed with an honorary committee of 25 members.

The current president of this federation is the chairman of Provincial Council Sabaragamuwa , Hon. Kanchana Jayarathna and the secretary-general is Mr. A. S. Nalaka. Since this federation has connected internationally with Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) , it bears the responsibility of the National Olympic Committee(NOC) of Sri Lanka as well. Also, with its involvement, Sri Lankan volleyball got privileged to participate in International sports leagues starting from 1980.

  • 1980 – The Asian Senior and Junior Men’s & Women’s Championship
  • 2002 – 12th Asian Junior Women’s Championship (Host)
  • 2014 – 10th Asian Youth Boys Volleyball Championship (Host)
  • 2018 – 1st Asian Challenge Cup Volleyball Championship (Host)

Other than that the federation conducts inter-school level, inter-university level, and national level games annually.

Popular Team Sports in Sri Lanka

As mentioned earlier, cricket has gained significant attention among active sports in Sri Lanka. Thus, if someone says cricket is the most popular sport in this country, there is nothing wrong with that. Hence, we can arrange the list of the popular sports in Sri Lanka, starting with Cricket.

We are sure that you are willing to know about the status of these sports in Sri Lanka. Continue reading, and you will get to know everything about them!

Cricket in Sri Lanka

The British were humble enough to introduce cricket to the island. Sri Lankans had their first experience in playing cricket in the 1800s. Cricket in Ceylon started with the formation of a cricket club called the Colombo Cricket Club in September 1832. Following that, the matches began in November 1832. Then the sport started to grow drastically by organizing the events such as,

  • The Premier Trophy (Since 1938)
  • Premier Limited Overs Tournament (Since 1989)

Sri Lanka gained its one-day international debut at the 1975 Cricket World Cup. Then, in 1981 the country achieved Test cricket status becoming the eighth Test cricket playing nation. It had a smooth run from the 1880s to the 1990s and became a major cricketing nation from the status of debut. Hence, in the present scenario, Sri Lanka is one of the twelve full member nations in test cricket and one of the seven nations that has won a Cricket World Cup.

International Cricket Achievements

Sri Lankan cricket teams were able to win the following championships in the past decades of history.

  • 1996 – Cricket World Cup
  • 2002 – ICC Championships Trophy
  • 2007 – Cricket World Cup (Runners up)
  • 2009 – ICC World Twenty20 (Runners up)
  • 2011 – Cricket World Cup (Runners up)
  • 2012 – ICC World Twenty20 (Runners up)
  • 2014 – ICC World Twenty20 Championship

Besides, the Board of Cricket Control in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) is the Sri Lankan cricket controlling body at present. Accordingly, it controls;

  • The national cricket team of Sri Lanka
  • Sri Lanka A cricket team
  • Sri Lanka national women’s cricket team
  • First-class cricket

Thus, by now cricket has been popularized and standardized other than any other sport in Sri Lanka. In fact, all levels of matches: professional, semi-professional, and recreational, in the country along with the international matches, have gained this popularity equally.

Other Popular Team Sports

Not only cricket but also many other team sports as well as individual sports gained popularity within Sri Lanka. Although they are mostly at their semi-professional and recreational level, they also provide glamour to the sports story of the island.

Let’s see what and how they work within the sports network in Sri Lanka.

Rugby is similarly popular as cricket and a team sport with a long history running back to 1879. The governing body of rugby in the country has been the Sri Lankan Rugby Football Union . In 1879 it marked its first step as a club sport with the Colombo Football Club.

Although Sri Lanka is not yet a part of the Rugby World Cup , it could successfully reach up to 42 on the world rankings in 2006. In 2010, it made it into the Asian Five Nations main tournament and currently competes as a Division One nation there.

However, the lack of financial aid, third-world infrastructure, and being at war for several decades stopped rugby from getting developed.

The world’s popular team game football has gained a considerable amount of popularity within Sri Lanka as well. It is also at the semi-professional and recreational levels. The governing body of football is the Football Federation of Sri Lanka. Currently, it operates the Sri Lanka national football team and also the Sri Lanka Football Premier League.

Netball is also another popular team game in Sri Lanka. However, it is a game designed only for girls. It has also reached the semi-professional and recreational levels with a good touch in professional, or international levels as well.

Netball took its first steps in Sri Lanka in 1921. The first team to play was the Ceylon Guide Company at Kandy High School. The first international match was with Australia’s national team in Sri Lanka. Later on, following a consistent improvement in the sport, the national team could also win the Asian Netball Championship four times. Further, Sri Lanka once got the privilege to host the championship in the country as well. With that Sri Lankan women’s national team got the rank of fifteen in the world in 2011.

Basketball marked its position among the sports in Sri Lanka in 1917. The founder was American Walter Cammack. After ten years, in 1927, Ananda College established basketball as a sport to the school crowd. Following that the other schools also established the sport in their schools.

The governing body of basketball in Sri Lanka is the Ceylon Basketball Federation (CBF). It was founded in 1958. After joining the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC)  in 1962, the team was privileged to participate in several ABC competitions as well.

Most Popular Individual Sports in Sri Lanka

Other than these team sports, there are quite a number of individual games that the Sri Lankans are familiar with. They are;

Table Tennis

Let us now get to know about these individual sports in Sri Lanka in detail.

Badminton

Badminton is an individual racquet sport that has gained a frontline position among the sports in Sri Lanka. As you might already know, it is an indoor game played using a racquet, shuttlecock, and a net. This can be played not only individually but also in a pair.

Sri Lankan Badminton players started to represent Sri Lanka at International levels recently and have gained quite popularity by now. In fact, this has become one of the most popular games among school children and many schools have created opportunities for students to practice this sport as well. Besides, Sri Lankans participate in school level, national level, and international level badminton competitions, and they have displayed impressive talents in the recent past. Hence, we can predict that this sport would further improve and get more popular in the future.

Table tennis is also an individual game that is quite popular within the sports network in Sri Lanka. This is a game played with a racquet, quite harder than a badminton racquet and a small ball instead of a shuttle. As per the name, the playing is going on a table divided by a net.

We can find Table Tennis, not on a large scale, but on a small scale within Sri Lanka. Mostly, this sport is popular in universities and clubs. Thus, table tennis is developing and popularizing among the folks and marking its position within this island.

Tennis is an individual game quite popular among Sri Lankans. However, this is a sport quite similar to badminton. Tennis requires a racquet, a tennis ball, and a net. The net is not as high as badminton but closer to the ground.

It was during British rule that tennis marked its introduction to Sri Lanka. Following that the authorities established the Ceylon Lawn Tennis Association in 1915. The governing body of tennis in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) . Although it is not that popular among the folks in Sri Lanka, we can find the sport in the school network and university network to a considerable extent. Undoubtedly, tennis will be more popular among Sri Lankans in the future!

Swimming, as an individual sport, has gained the attraction of both men and women in Sri Lanka. This is a sport associated with the water surfaces but has a recommended set of rules and styles.

It has notable popularity among the folks and has achieved a considerable position among the sports in Sri Lanka as well. Most of the schools create opportunities for students to practice swimming, and even parents nowadays, are interested in getting their kids to practice swimming from their small ages.

Sri Lanka represents the swimming category in the Olympics as well. Apart from that, there are several school-level, club-level, national, and international swimming competitions for Sri Lankan swimmers to take part in. Though currently, it is also at the developing level, as a sport in the country it directs to a commendable level.

Athletics in Sri Lanka

From the ancient days, athletics was one of the major sports activities in the country. Thus, many of the athletes from Sri Lanka could reach greater heights by achieving international-level wins as well.

However, the following disciplines of athletics hold a special place in the field of sports in Sri Lanka.

Track Events

Relay races, field events, road running, race walking.

All these athletic events are popular not only among the youth but also among the school children of Sri Lanka as well. In fact, the above-mentioned events happen to be definite events of any of the school sports meets, and thus, the school children have the necessary guidance and the motivation to practice these sports from their younger ages itself.

However, the following sections would brief you about these popular athletic events in Sri Lanka in detail.

According to international standards, men and women practice track and field events separately, abiding by international regulations. A variety of track events that belong to the categories sprints, middle-distance running, and long-distance running are popular within the country, and there are many Sri Lankan athletes who did well in these events. Besides, Susanthika Jayasinghe can never be forgotten when discussing things with regard. She was the Sri Lankan athlete who won the Silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Relays are also very popular among Sri Lankan athletes. As you might already know, this is a team event, where each team consists of four members, and they would run a certain distance with a baton in hand, and then, pass it to the next team member. It would continue until the team completed the total distance of the event, each team member taking a chance.

When considering field events, both throwing events and jumping events are practiced by Sri Lankan athletes. Among them, shot put, discus throw, and the javelin throw happen to be the most popular throwing events, and long jump, high jump, and triple jump happen to be the most popular jumping events.

This is one of the highlight events of the Sri Lankan athletic meets, and it is well-known as an event that can be seen in sports festivals during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season as well. Still, school-level events for road running are not that common in Sri Lanka, since children are not encouraged to take part in road running events at school owing to safety issues. However, the youth enjoy taking part in road running events.

This is not that popular among Sri Lankans when compared with the other athletic events mentioned earlier. Still, some of the athletic meets held in Sri Lanka hold this event separately for men and women.

Traditional Sri Lankan Sports

Other than all the above-mentioned sports, this splendid island owns a set of sports that are unique to Sri Lanka. They in a way represent the culture as well as the origins of Sri Lanka and its sports. These are essentially endowed from our ancestors. Some of these traditional sports in Sri Lanka are as follows.

Olinda Keliya

Apart from that Sri Lanka has exerted popularity for the most unique avurudu games played in a specific period in the year.

Chak-gudu is a traditional game played between two teams and originated in the South Indian regions. Each team should consist of seven players. What happens in this game is that one team member runs into the opposing team’s half of a court, and tags out as many of their defenders as possible. Further, that player should return to their own half of the court without being tackled by the opponents as well.

Even though we consider this as a traditional game in Sri Lanka, Chak-gudu is more or less similar to the game of Kabaddi. You may surely know about Kabaddi since it is now popular in many countries, and an event in international competitions as well. So, if you know it, you can simply imagine the game of Chak-gudu, since the concepts are almost the same.

However, Chak-gudu is not that popular among the Sri Lankans at the present, even though this can be seen in villages once in a while. However, traditional sports festivals make sure to have this sport as an event in their schedules most of the time.

Gillidanda is another traditional game, originated from the South Indian sub-continent. This game needs two sticks, one a bit longer, and the other a bit shorter. The basic concept of this game revolves around hitting the long stick with the shorter. However, this is one of the rarely seen sports in Sri Lanka at the moment. Still, visiting a rural village may create opportunities for you to observe how a few young boys enjoy this game of ‘Gillidanda’.

Olinda Keliya is one of the most popular traditional indoor games, played using a board, and Olinda seeds. Besides, there is a belief that this game has a significant bond with Goddess Paththini. Owing to this reason, Olinda Keliya has been a popular game between ladies from the past. Even though Olinda Keliya is not much popular among the new generations, elderly people in villages still play Olinda Keliya during their leisure time.

The origin of Elle runs back to the early 20th century. The sources are unable to find a specific introduction of the game to the country. However, most of the locals believe that it may have come along with cricket as it has some similarities with cricket.

In fact, this is specifically a bat and ball game that is popular in Sri Lanka. This has similarities with the modern-day sport, softball. Among the traditional sports in Sri Lanka, Ella is certainly the most popular. Village boys play these games in the paddy fields, and grounds even in the present, and thus, it remains an integral part of the Sri Lankan culture.

Angampora is a wonderful practice that belongs to the martial arts. It is not only a traditional sport, but an act of self-defense, and meditation. It mostly uses hand-to-hand fighting and indigenous weapons. Even though this art was a bit distanced during the colonial era , it is still alive thanks to the generations who practice Angampora.

Avurudu Games

Avurudu games are a set of games associated with one of the major national festivals of Sri Lanka. This festival is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year , which is an annual festival mainly celebrated by Sinhalese and Hindus in April, in Sri Lanka. It is associated with customs and traditions and some unique games. The folks follow all the customs within a few days and grandly celebrate this festival.

However, the games associated with this festival are folk games and not professional games.

Some of them are as follows;

1. Kotta Pora

It is the conventional form of the pillow fight played on a horizontal pole by two people. Some fix this pole on the ground, while some fix this pole in a shallow lake.

2. Kana Mutti Bideema

This is kind of a hit-and-find game. A blindfolded person has to walk towards a pole with a few pots containing different colors of water. Then they have to hit the direction they guess. To win the game, one of the contestants has to smash the correct pot which includes blue-colored water, or water with flowers.

3. Lissana Gase Nageema

Here, the contestants have to climb up a greasy trunk without sliding down. This is a team game and the team can collaboratively do this. The team that is to detach the flag on the top of the trunk becomes the winner.

4. Banis Kama

This is an eating game. Usually, they have to eat buns. It is a game where the contestants have to eat a hanged-bun without touching it.

5. The Spoon Race

In this game, the contestants have to balance a spoon with lime on it in the mouth. The first person to reach the finish line without dropping the lime is the winner.

6. Pol Game Tharangaya

This is a coconut scraping contest. In this game, the one who is to finish scraping the given coconuts first becomes the winner.

Likewise, there are a lot of local games introduced by our ancestors. The specialty of these games is that the pieces of equipment associated with these games are household things. Besides, the core values of these games are more associated with togetherness, and friendly competitiveness.

The Opportunities to Excel in the Sports in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, we can find different levels of sports starting from school to the international level.

School Level

When it comes to the school level, that is the place where the Sri Lankans keep their infant steps to sports. First, the students take part in annual school sport meets. Then, they get the chance to participate in inter-school meets representing the school. The inter-school meets take place in three levels;

  • Zonal leve l – Among the schools within the zone.
  • District level – Among the schools within the district. Best representative participants from each zone participate as contestants.
  • Provincial-level – Among the schools within the province. Most talented participants from each district participate as contestants.
  • National level – Among the schools within the whole country. Best representatives from each province get the chance to participate as contestants.

By being a part of such a varying network, the Sri Lankans gain the opportunity to improve their sports skills in a competitive environment. Perhaps, based on the performance at the national level, the authorities select contestants for the national teams to represent the national grounds.

University Level

In the present context all the governmental, as well as non-governmental universities, create their students the space to engage in sports. This is also a great chance for the youth of the nation to identify and improve their sports skills.

Apart from the school network, the Sri Lankans get the opportunity to be a part of the clubs as well. In Sri Lanka, one can find sports clubs for every sport popular within the island. Hence, it provides the Sri Lankan youth to grab sports opportunities if they miss them at school.

International Level

At the final level, the Sri Lankans get the chance to represent their country at international contests such as Olympics, SAARC , Asian Championships, etc. Not only that, for several decades the contestants could bring victory and mark the country on the sports world map successfully.

Authorities that Overlook Sports in the Country

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is the main authoritative body of sports in Sri Lanka. It overlooks all the levels starting from school to the international level. It has the authority to conduct all the national sports contests and to form all the national teams within the island. Hence, it is only under its evaluations that the Sri Lankan sportsmen and sportswomen would get the chance to represent the national teams.

However, under the ministry, there are provincial units and several other units to overlook the sports within their regions.

The Future of Sri Lankan Sports

At present, Sri Lanka as a country has improved its sports network widely at different levels. Yet, owing to the lack of facilities that is visibly present on the island slows the success story of sports in Sri Lanka. Following are such shortcomings in the system;

  • Lack of advanced equipment, facilities, and stadiums.
  • Improper training systems, and lack of qualified trainers.
  • Lack of financial allocation
  • Lack of motivation for achievements
  • The unwillingness of individuals to choose sports as their career
  • Lack of responsible authorities
  • Non-adaptability to the advanced techniques
  • Lack of importance giving

If the authorities and the field can improve these loopholes and give more attention to the sports category in the country, the future of sports will be more lavish than now. For instance, when it comes to international scopes, indeed now we are participating in a high number of events, yet the achievements are less. If we can keep both sides balanced that will be the biggest achievement we can gain as a country.

The Bottom Line

Of course, the bond that Sri Lankans have with sports is immense. And yes, it was this wonderful bond that made Sri Lankans reach greater heights in several sports in the past. The famous sportsmen and sportswomen, who are loved by the whole world, simply prove this fact right. However, the sports story of Sri Lanka is never to stop here. It would continue further, with many more noteworthy achievements. Thus, this read on sports in Sri Lanka ends here with looking forward to more improvements and more achievements in the sports network within this sparkling island!

You may be excited for a tranquil beach vacation along a gorgeous stretch of golden sand. If not, you might be thrilled to experience the exhilaration and thrill of the incredible wildlife among the breathtaking scenery. Going further, you can even be anticipating learning about the splendor of the historical tales entwined with the island's customs. Similarly, your dream could be anywhere in these boundaries or outside of them. Nevertheless, we cherish your dream and pledge to turn it into a reality. Indeed, the Customized Tour Packages we provide serve as evidence that we honor our commitments.

With rugged mountains, untouched beaches and fertile soil that grows coconuts, tea and spices, Sri Lanka offers travelers a wondrous mix of experiences unmatched for an island of its size.

Today the country’s rich heritage, delectable cuisine and astonishing wildlife are more accessible than ever, thanks to an ever-improving public transport system. Trains, buses, coaches and tuk-tuks carry visitors to all parts of the island at various price points. But with so many charming places to choose from, where does one start?

Depending on what you’re looking for – art, culture, history – what you put down on your Sri Lanka itinerary is bound to change. Still, here’s our selection of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka to get you started.

A red auto rickshaw, a pedestrian, and a vendor setting up in front of the decorative red-and-white patterned facade of Jamiul Alfar Mosque, built in 1908, in the heart of the bazaar of Pettah, one of the oldest districts in Colombo

Best for exploring on foot

No Sri Lanka itinerary is complete without Colombo , the country’s culturally diverse hub. An ideal first taste of Sri Lanka, with tuk-tuks, cars and buses rushing through busy lanes, Colombo is renowned for its landmark buildings around the cosmopolitan Fort district, including the terracotta-roofed Dutch Hospital .

Be sure to spend some time at Galle Face Green , a seaside promenade where hundreds of families gather to dip their toes in the sea at sunset and children fly kites overhead. Order yourself isso wade , deep-fried prawn and lentil cakes, topped with spicy sambol , and people-watch.

Planning tip: While Colombo is a safe and walkable city, tuk-tuks are inexpensive and convenient for getting around. Always check that your tuk-tuk has a working meter before you get in to ensure you pay the correct fare for your ride.

Above the Lion Gate, many tourists ascend and descend the steep stairs to the top of the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya or Lion Rock in central Sri Lanka

2. Sigiriya

Best for history buffs and art aficionados

With ornate ponds, royal sleeping chambers and majestic lion paws carved into the base of the rock, the colossal granite fortress of Sigiriya  is easily Sri Lanka’s most recognizable site, peeking out of a thick jungle canopy for a glimpse of the ancient kingdom of Kassapa.

Although its frescoes – images of bare-breasted women adorned in jewelry with flowers in their hair – are famous, the view from the top of the rock is unparalleled. A hush of calm echoes over the terraced summit, which covers 1.6 hectares (4 acres).

Planning tip: Get here around 7am – the cooler morning air makes for a pleasant walk up the 1200 steps to the top. Aim to head back down before noon (before the rock surface gets too hot), stay hydrated and wear soft shoes with tread.

3. Anuradhapura

Best for experiencing Buddhist culture

Anuradhapura looks misleadingly like any other Sri Lankan town when you arrive: an unremarkable clock tower, a single train station and small shops lining a busy main road. But the town's simple facade gives nothing away regarding the enormous scale of its heritage as the heartland of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture.

The main feature of this area remains the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to have been planted from a cutting from the tree Buddha attained enlightenment under in Bodhgaya, India. Beyond this, Anuradhapura is bursting with archaeological wonders: colossal dagobas (stupas), temples, palaces and venerable Buddhist sites scattered among the jungles and villages of the area.

Planning tip: Comfortable shoes are a must for walking between sites. Buddhist temples, even as ruins, are still places of worship, and footwear must be removed before entering. Carrying a scarf to cover legs and shoulders is always a good idea.

4. Polonnaruwa

Best for ancient archaeological wonders

Often twinned with a visit to Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is also famed for its ancient ruins, rock temples and Buddhist heritage.

As you gaze upon the 14m (46ft) reclining Buddha in Gal Viharaya and its surrounding carvings, you can’t help but imagine what went into creating these figures. The white, grey and black granite softens the details of these intricate carvings, and the scent of fresh flowers and incense, offered to the statues by devotees, floats through the temple's air.

Don’t skip the remaining archaeological sites in the area, including the Royal Ruins , which can be visited in a day and contain closely grouped temples and stupas.

Planning tip: If traveling toward Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka, both Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are great places to stay and break up the journey.

Two young boys ride a bike along a street in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The one boy sits on the seat and pedals, while the other sits above the back wheel.

Best for a taste of Tamil culture

From the Jaffna Fort  to the architecturally marvelous Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil , a Hindu temple adorned with brasswork and staggering murals, Jaffna is a relaxed change from the rest of the country. Here you can immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of Sri Lanka’s largest ethnic minority: the Tamil people.

Once under Portuguese and Dutch occupation, today’s Jaffna is revitalized with up-and-coming restaurants. Of the several islands off the coast of Jaffna accessible by roads and ferries, Kayts – a hauntingly beautiful, quiet island of fishing communities – and Delft, with its wild ponies descended from horses abandoned by Dutch colonists, are worth a visit.

Planning tip: The Tamil-centric culture in Jaffna differs from the rest of the island. Be mindful of local customs, such as removing footwear when entering certain sites. This includes the Jaffna Public Librar y, where footwear is removed as a means of respecting the knowledge within the building.

6. Trincomalee

Best for an unspoiled beach vacation

Stretches of powdery soft beaches and calm waters meld with dramatic cliffside Hindu temples – among them the famous Kandasamy Kovil , with unmistakable ornamental architecture and a monumental statue of Shiva looking out to sea – for a touch of Sri Lanka that remains off most tourists’ radars.

The coastline here is only disturbed by the occasional bit of driftwood or coconut husk washing ashore in the shallow waters, ripe for snorkeling, where miles of coral reefs and marine life thrive.

Planning tip: Public beaches here do not have lifeguards, and swimming and snorkeling should only be undertaken with a guide.

Buddha statues and colorful religious art in the dimly lit caves at Dambulla

7. Dambulla

Best for pilgrim trails

An important part of the country’s pilgrim trail, set within a quiet jungle that's home to the native toque macaque (aka toque monkey), Rangiri Cave Temple in Dambulla is the most visited place in Sri Lanka.

Expect troops of monkeys to accompany you on the walk up to the temple, inside which you'll find a series of five caves containing 150 well-preserved statues of Buddha alongside religious art, sculpted and painted into the rock.

Planning tip: Wear white or soft colors as a mark of respect, and expect crowds on full-moon days, which are holy days in the Buddhist calendar. While toque macaques are delightful to watch, they are wild and should never be approached.

8. Minneriya National Park

Best for witnessing the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world

Herds of wild elephants – around 300 in number – graze nearly 9000 hectares (22,240 acres) of Minneriya National Park, where life centers around Minneriya Lake. Watch in awe (cameras at the ready, naturally!) as long trunks draw water and calves roll around on the banks in wet mud.

Once a year, during the dry season, all 300 elephants gather around the banks of the lake to graze in a marvelous natural event known as "the Gathering." This also happens to be the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.

Planning tip: April to October is the best time to see the Gathering. Prebooking your safari and sharing jeeps helps to reduce the number of vehicles entering the park during this busy period.

Crowds of people pay respect to the Buddhist relic in Temple of the Buddha Tooth, Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Best for experiencing Sri Lanka’s Hill Country

An ideal day trip from Colombo, the train departs the city’s Fort Railway Station and pulls into the heritage town of Kandy in under four hours. As the train curves and winds around mountains to connect rural towns, wide windows frame the view of deep ravines and hillsides densely covered in emerald-green tea bushes.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake , both must-do attractions for anyone visiting Sri Lanka, are easily reached via tuk-tuk from the station.

Planning tip: Visitors are required to cover their arms, legs and shoulders when visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Kandy-to-Colombo train is an alternative way to experience Sri Lanka’s railway journeys, as popular towns such as Ella are 10 hours away from Colombo.

10. Kalpitiya

Best for surfing enthusiasts

Despite attracting thrill-seekers from around the world, Kalpitiya retains most of its quaint coastal charm, with the exception of a Dutch-era fort that is occupied by the Sri Lankan navy. Cows, goats and donkeys stroll across the villages. Thatched-roof beach huts with outdoor showers offer that stereotypically pleasing surf-shack vibe, and most mornings you’ll wake to a crowing rooster. Most important, just 30km (19 miles) north of here at Vella Island, a narrow sandbar, you’re surrounded by tall, clear waves – kitesurfing heaven.

Planning tip: The weather for kitesurfing is ideal between October to May, and there are several kitesurfing schools around Kalpitiya.

A mugger crocodile (Crocodilus palustris) with its jaws wide open in green marshland

11. Kumana National Park

Best for spotting birds

Known for its 200-hectare (494-acre) bird reserve, Kumana National Park is a birder’s dream, home to throngs of vibrant kingfishers and jungle fowl alongside 255 recorded species of endemic and migrating birds, all of which find sanctuary in the park's mangrove swamps and lagoons.

Expect to spot falcons and eagles as they soar above or peacocks shimmying on the ground. Also frequently spotted here: cleverly camouflaged crocodiles lying in wait on the sandy banks of the lake for a chance encounter with buffalo.

Cap off your trip here with a visit to the coastal village of Panama, which many visitors bypass in favor of bigger towns, such as Pottuvil and Arugam Bay . Between the tiny monastery under a rock, thatched-roof homes and dirt tracks through paddy fields, Panama is one of the most remote places to see.

Planning tip: Entrance to Kumana National Park is through the village of Okanda. Prearranging a guided jeep safari is best for enjoying the park.

12. Adam’s Peak

Best for experiencing a night hike

Adam’s Peak (the footprint of Prophet Adam, in Islam), Sri Pada (the sacred foot of Buddha) and Samanala Kanda (the mountain of the butterflies and a reference to the local deity Saman) are multiple names given to Sri Lanka’s holiest peak, considered sacred by all religions on the island.

Join thousands of pilgrims, dressed in white, in the early hours of the morning to hike slowly and quietly to the little temple at the top . Humble teahouses, resting places and shrines dot the landscape as you ascend. Pilgrims greet each other through blessings for a good climb. The hike to the top takes three to four hours, depending on the trail you choose. Aim to summit at dawn to catch the first rays of the sun wrapping around the mountain.

Planning tip: Adam’s Peak is 2243m (7359ft) high and a moderate climb. Ascending via Hatton and descending via Ratnapura is the shortest route, although steeper.

The full-moon days in December and May mark the beginning and end of the climbing season. During this period, set off earlier to sidestep the crowds, or expect slow and packed trails. Climbing in the offseason is not recommended, as it coincides with the southeastern monsoon.

Colombo International Film Festival to boost Sri Lanka’s cinema and tourism industries

Friday, 21 June 2024 03:21 -     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

  • Cabinet approves to host festival from 8-14 July with support from National Film Corporation, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority
  • Minister Bandula Gunawardena says initiative aims to popularise global cinematography in SL by reviving local film industry and making destination an attractive tourist hub in South Asia
  • Festival to feature over 34 award-winning films from Iran, France, India, South Korea, China, Japan, Germany

In a bid to rejuvenate the Sri Lankan film industry whilst positioning the country as a major tourist hub in South Asia, the Government has decided to host the Colombo International Film Festival.  Organised under the sponsorship of the National Film Corporation (NFC) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the film festival is set to take place from 8-14 July in Colombo. The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday approved the joint proposal by Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Tourism Minister Harin Fernando to host the Colombo International Film Festival.  Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced the festival will feature over 34 award-winning films from a variety of countries, including Iran, France, India, South Korea, China, Japan and Germany. “The primary objective is to popularise global cinematography in the country by creating a revival in the Sri Lankan film industry, as well as making the destination a tourist hub in South Asia by gaining high tourist attraction,” he stated. The film festival promises a rich cultural experience for Sri Lankan audiences and film enthusiasts, offering them access to a diverse array of international films.  In addition to the screenings, the Cabinet Co-Spokesman said the festival has attracted the participation of many international judges, further underscoring its significance on the global film festival circuit. The involvement of these judges is expected to enhance the festival’s prestige and provide insights into the standards and trends of global cinema. “This initiative also provides an invaluable opportunity for film students to gain a deeper understanding and experience of global cinematography,” Gunawardena added. He said the Colombo International Film Festival is anticipated to not only boost the local film industry but also significantly contribute to the tourism sector by drawing movie buffs and tourists from around the world. “This confluence of cinema and tourism aligns with the Government’s broader objectives of cultural exchange and economic development,” he said. Gunawardena said preparations are underway to ensure that the festival is a resounding success, setting the stage for Colombo to become a key destination for international film festivals in the years to come.
