What Are The Best Hikes In Cappadocia?
Cappadocia is a massive region that stretches about 5,000 square km. If you want to enjoy some of the best attractions in Cappadocia and do some hiking, we recommend basing yourself in Goreme and hiking from the town there.
It is the most popular place to stay in Cappadocia for a reason, but it’s also the gateway to many of these epic hiking trails.
1. Love Valley and White Valley
- Distance: ~ 7.5 kilometers (4.66 mi)
- Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
- Start Point: Goreme
- End Point: Uçhisar Castle
- Difficulty: Medium
The Love Valley and White Valley hike is one of the most popular hikes in Cappadocia. It showcases some of the most unique fairy chimneys in the region.
Love Valley earned its name from the phallic-looking rock formations, which are a lot more prominent than other parts of Cappadocia.
On the other hand, White Valley earned its name from the white surface of the rocks and sand.
The two valleys connect with each other with no distinct separation. While it is possible to hike just one of the two valleys, they are usually combined because the hiking trail takes you from Goreme to Uchisar.
It is possible to do the hike backward, starting from Uchisar and ending in Goreme. Doing the hike in this direction will be slightly easier than the normal way, but you’ll have to find a way to get to Uchisar first.
Once you are in Uchisar, make sure you visit Uchisar Castle before returning to Goreme, either through the same trail, the Pigeon Valley hike (which we’ll talk about below), or a bus.
💪 Pro Tip: Time this hike so you arrive at Uchisar Castle for sunset. Uchisar Castle is one of the tallest spots in Cappadocia, so the sunset views there are unparalleled. 📚 If you want to learn more about Love Valley, check out our complete guide here!
2. Pigeon Valley
- Distance: ~3 kilometers (1.86 mi)
- Duration: 1 hour
- End Point: Uchisar Castle
- Difficulty: Easy to Medium
Similar to the Love Valley and White Valley, the Pigeon Valley connects Goreme with Uchisar. This is a great alternative trail to get back from Uchisar after hiking there via White and Love Valley.
Compared to Love Valley, the Pigeon Valley is much easier at only around 3 kilometers long. The valley earned its name from the numerous pigeon houses that you can see along the trail. Historically, pigeon poop was very expensive, so many houses for pigeons were built to harvest their poop.
Hikers can experience a part of that history on the Pigeon Valley hike.
The start of the Pigeon Valley hike is near an amazing restaurant in Cappadocia known as Nazar Borek & Cafe. So make sure you get some refreshments and Turkish foods before you start your hike!
💪 Pro Tip: You can see Pigeon Valley as part of the Blue Tour . There is a viewpoint at Pigeon Valley that you can see on the Green Tour, too. It is one of the best spots for seeing the hot air balloons in Cappadocia! 📚 If you want to learn more, check out our complete Pigeon Valley guide here .
Don’t Miss Out on the BEST Experience in Cappadocia!
No trip to Cappadocia is complete without taking an epic hot air balloon flight at sunrise!
Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance to avoid missing out or paying any additional fees last minute!
3. Rose Valley
- Distance: ~4.3 kilometers (2.67 mi) one-way (not including a 900-meter walk to get to the start of the trail from Goreme)
- Duration: 1.5 hours of hiking, but you’ll likely spend ~2.5 hours in total from stopping and admiring all the cool rock formations
- Start Point: 900 meters North of Goreme
- End Point: Red Valley Viewpoint
No Cappadocia itinerary is complete without hiking the Rose Valley trail and exploring its historical cave churches and incredible vistas. Along the hiking trail are two of Cappadocia’s most exotic churches – the Crusader Chruch and the Columned Church.
Those Christian churches are believed to be built around the 3rd and 4th century AD, nearly 2000 years ago. You can still see some of the frescoes inside, but not as clear as the ones in Goreme Open-Air Museum. Now that Christianity is no longer the main religion in Turkey, those churches are in pretty bad shape.
The Rose Valley hike starts about 1 kilometer north of Goreme and ends around the Red Valley Viewpoint, one of the b est sunset viewpoints in Cappadocia .
This viewpoint is accessible by car and has a few cafes and seats for visitors to enjoy the view, which unfortunately means it is often very crowded.
Once you finish hiking Rose Valley, you have the option to hike back the same way you came, or exit via the Red Valley. We recommend doing the Red Valley to create a small loop and see what else this region has to offer.
📚 Want to learn more about the Rose Valley? Check out our complete guide here!
4. Red Valley
- Distance: ~3.3 kilometers (2.05 mi) one-way (not including a 900-meter walk to get to the start of the trail from Goreme)
- Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours of hiking, but likely to spend more to check out the views
The Red Valley is the perfect hike in Cappadocia to compliment the Rose Valley (in fact, most people combine these two hikes and do them as a loop).
This hike got its name from the red rock formations that would glow red and pink during sunset, which is quite spectacular if you so happen to be hiking through it during that time.
However, compared to Rose Valley, it doesn’t have as many historical rock-cut churches.
The starting point of the Red Valley hike is the same as the Rose Valley hike, about 900 meters north of Goreme and 2km south of Cavusin.
Its ending point is also the same as Rose Valley – at the Red Valley Sunset viewpoint. That is why the combination of the Red and Rose Valley hike is one of the best hikes in Cappadocia.
Besides beautiful rock formations and fairy chimneys, hikers can stop for a light refreshment at the tea houses along the trail and marvel at the shadows and shapes of the gorge below.

5. Ihlara Valley
- Distance: ~10.5 kilometers (6.52 mi)
- Duration: 3 to 4 hours of hiking
- Start Point: Ihlara Village
- End Point: Selime
- Difficulty: Medium to Difficult
Ihlara Valley is one of the longest hikes in Cappadocia at around a total of 14 kilometers. However, hikers typically only do a portion of the hike, and one of the most popular ones is the 10.5 kilometers part.
This part of the hike begins at the small Ihlara Village, where hikers will descend into the Ihlara valley. Following the Melendiz Stream, you will pass through the quaint Belisirma Village and eventually finish in Selime, where you can visit the epic Selime Monastery and see its incredible frescoes.
Another popular option is to hike from Ihlara Valley to Belisirma Village, where hikers can dine in one of the restaurants floating above the river. Surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of the river, it is a unique experience that hikers cannot miss. This route is about 5 km (3.1 mi) long.
Ihlara Valley is quite a unique place to go hiking in Cappadocia, because the valley is so lush compared to the desert landscape of the region. Yet visitors can still find cave dwellings nestled under the dramatic rock formations and canyon.
Perhaps the most difficult part about hiking in Ihlara Valley is its distance from the major sights in Cappadocia. Göreme is situated over an hour’s drive away. As a result, most people visit Ihlara Valley either rent a car or go on the green tour.

6. Goreme Sunset Point
- Distance: <1 km (0.62 mi)
- Duration: 15 minutes
- End Point: Goreme Sunset Point
- Difficulty: Easy
Goreme Sunset Point is arguably the easiest hike in Cappadocia, perfect for anyone traveling with kids or elders. The viewpoint is situated in the town itself, and visitors simply have to hike up a small hill to reach there.
It is known as the Goreme Sunset Point because the sunset is simply spectacular there. From this viewpoint, you can have panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and canyon, as well as Uchisar Castle in the distance.
There is also a built-in platform where visitors can take photos to remember their trip. Unlike most hikes in the region, the Goreme Sunset Viewpoint has a small entry fee.
This is one of the places you must when in Cappadocia, especially since it is so easy to get to. It is also a nice spot to see the hot air balloon rides at sunrise !
7. Hidden Church Hike
- Distance: ~ 1.2 km (0.74 mi)
- Duration: <30 minutes
- End Point: Hidden Church
There are many hidden churches dotted throughout the valleys of Cappadocia , and one that we have gotten to know quite well is the aptly named Hidden Church. This church doesn’t have a specific name, it is literally just called hidden church amongst the locals.
The hiking trail for this hidden church is not on any maps, but you can get a rough location from Google Maps . It is situated behind the Museum Ranch , and you’ll find the trail head for it behind the car park.
The hidden church is by no means in top condition. The paintings inside have almost completely faded and many of the columns are completely broken off. But that is why we loved it so much – it showed what happens when nature is left to reclaim what’s hers.
Plus, you are likely going to be the only ones in the hidden church as not everyone is able to find it!
8. Zemi Valley Loop
- Distance: 3.2 km (2 mi)
- Start Point: About 500 meters east of Goreme
- End Point: About 500 meters east of Goreme
Zemi Valley Loop is one of the most accessible and easy Cappadocia hiking trails. The trail starts just a few minutes away from Goreme town center, and takes you through some really epic fairy chimneys in the region.
Some refer to Zemi Valley as the miniature Love Valley, and it is not difficult to understand why because this valley also has plenty of phallic-looking rock formations. Unfortunately, hikers won’t find any caves or churches here, but the fairy chimneys themselves are worthy enough of a quick walk in the area.
It is one of the shortest hikes in Cappadocia where you can get up close to the chimneys – definitely worth checking out.
9. Zelve Open-Air Museum
- Duration: 1 to 2 hours
- Entrance Fee: 25 Liras
Zelve Open-Air Museum is one of the best places to visit in Cappadocia, Turkey. Three valleys make up the Zelve Monastery, a Byzantine-era settlement that had both Muslims and Christian living harmoniously.
The inhabitants abandoned their homes in the Zelve Valleys due to safety concerns of the structures. Though hikers won’t find any frescoes here, they will find some of the most spectacular rock-carved caves and cave homes.
The three valleys at Zelve take about 1 hour to hike. But if you are stopping and admiring all the historical beauty, then expect to spend around 2 hours here. It is a great place to get a nice hike in and learn something cultural along the way.
It is situated far from the towns of Cappadocia, so we recommend hiring a car or a taxi to get there.
10. Devrent Valley
- Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Entrance Fee: Free
Devrent Valley is one of the most popular valleys in Cappadocia, but not for hiking. It is nicknamed the Imagination Valley, thanks to the fairy chimneys that look like various different things when you add a little bit of imagination and creativity to it.
The most iconic one is the camel-looking rock formation at the entrance, but visitors have also claimed to see a dolphin, snails, birds, and even an old lady.
Devrent Valley isn’t one of the best places to go hiking in Cappadocia simply because it is so small. It takes less than 15 minutes to hike around the valley, but it isn’t difficult to spend more than 30 minutes here just standing around and looking at the different rock formations.
Devrent Valley is part of the red tour of Cappadocia.
📚 Planning to visit Devrent Valley? Check out our guide before you go!
11. Meskendir Valley
- Distance: ~2 km (1.24 mi)
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Start Point: Near Kaya Camping
- End Point: Merges With Red Valley
The Meskendir Valley isn’t a super popular trail to go hiking in Cappadocia, but that doesn’t mean it has nothing to see.
It is home to numerous cave dwellings, sand tunnels, and tea houses where you can drink Turkish tea (or a refreshing orange juice) and relax.
Unfortunately, because the trailhead is rather difficult to get to (nearly 2.6 km from Goreme), this trail doesn’t see a lot of hikers. It is mostly used for people that are staying in Ortisar or Kaya Camping, which happens to be the entrance of the Meskendir Valley.
The end of the trail connects with Red Valley, which means visitors can explore Meskendir Valley, Red Valley, and Rose Valley in a big loop. Personally, nothing in Meskendir Valley has really stood out to us so we would only recommend me if it was convenient for you and you wanted to do a full day hike.
What To Pack For Cappadocia Hikes
Because of the unique desert landscape of Cappadocia, preparing for its hikes can be a bit challenging. Here are what you should be packing for your Cappadocia hikes.
- Plenty of Water – This goes without saying but visitors can sometimes underestimate the power of the sun and its dehydrating effects. Pack a little more just in case, you can always just empty it if you need to.
- Sunscreen – The sun is so strong in Cappadocia and most of the hikes are not shaded. Even a few hours out in the sun will get you seriously sunburned, especially if you are visiting in the summer.
- Sunglasses – Not only is the sun usually very powerful in Cappadocia, but the sand reflects the sun rays and makes your eyes even more tiring. Sunglasses are a must if you want to protect your eyes in Cappadocia.
- Desert Scarf – Used to protect your face and head from the sun and the sand. It’s also useful for when the wind kicks up and the sand is slapping your face.
- Hiking Poles – If you want to tackle multiple hiking trails in Cappadocia, then get some hiking poles. Some of the surfaces can be slippery due to soft sand and a pole may help you stabalize yourself on the downhills.
Tips For Hiking In Cappadocia
Hiking in Cappadocia is quite different than hiking in other parts of the world. The desert landscape is full of beauty at every corner, but it can be quite dangerous if you don’t respect it and take it seriously. Here are some of our tips for hiking in Cappadocia:
- Avoid the midday heat – Though summer is one of the best times to visit Cappadocia , the heat and sun in the middle of the day are very strong. If you are not used to it, which most of us aren’t, then the midday heat can cause heat-related illnesses.
- Download offline maps before you go – The signal on most of these hiking trails is not exactly the best and sometimes you can be without any service. Make sure you have an offline map on your mobile so you can navigate your way. We recommend maps.me .
- Be alert – Many of the structures you find in the Cappadocian Valley have been there for hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of years. Some of the structural stability isn’t exactly where they are supposed to be, so make sure you are alert just in case something does collapse. Cappadocia is very safe , but that is something you must be aware of.
- Look out for the markers – When hiking Cappadocia, it can sometimes be difficult to know the way as many trails tend to have little signage. However, there is usually a red marker painted on a rock that indicates the way. If you need directions, you need to look down on the ground for the painted rocks, rather than up for signs.
Cappadocia Hiking FAQs
What are the best hikes in goreme.
The best hikes in Goreme are Red and Rose Valley, Pigeon Valley, and Love Valley. Those are all located within walking distance from the town center of Goreme and showcase some of the best features of the region.
What are the best short hikes in Cappadocia?
The best short hikes in Cappadocia are Goreme Sunset Viewpoint, Zelve Valleys, and Zemi Valley Loop. Those hikes take less than an hour to explore, ideal for travelers looking for something a little less strenuous.
Do you need hiking boots for hiking in Cappadocia?
Whether you decide to wear hiking boots comes down to personal preference and how much ankle support you need, but we hiked all the trails in Cappadocia in trainers and felt this was fine. The ground in Cappadocia is mostly flat and doesn’t require much traction on your shoes, but it can be slippery in places where the sand has worn down. There is the occasional sandy path, but there is no need for elaborate footwear.
Before You Go
Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the rich history and epic landscapes of Cappadocia. It’s one of the top things to do in the region and is the best way to get off the beaten path and explore the moon-like landscape up close.
As with all hikes, make sure you go prepared with plenty of water and snacks and let family or friends know where you are going. Although we think the hikes in Cappadocia are safe, it’s always good to go with someone (especially as there is no data service in many of the valleys), so try to find someone to hike with you if you can.
We hope our blog post has helped you decide what is the best hike in Cappadocia and gave you inspiration for a few to do on your trip.
If you are still undecided, our absolute favorite was the Red and Rose Valley hike, so if you only have time for one, that’s the one we recommend.

Our trip starts today in Goreme, a remarkable honey-hued village and our base for a week of exploring the impressive landscapes of Cappadocia. This area is famous for its unique geological formations as well as a history that stretches back to before the Hittites (2000 BC).
Our tour leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting and for those that wish, there'll be the chance to go out for dinner. There are no other activities planned today, so you're free to arrive in Goreme at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Kayseri Airport (ASR), which is around a one-hour and fifteen minute drive away. Should you miss the welcome meeting, our tour leader will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up.
Our comfortable base for the week is the Sobek Stone House - a characterful, stone-built, hotel located on the outskirts of Goreme. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens and offers wonderful views of Cappadocia. Each of the 40 rooms is tastefully decorated in an individual fashion with private bathrooms and air-conditioning. Facilities include an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sauna, restaurant and a terrace bar. If you're up early in the mornings, you'll be able to see hot air balloons filling the sky from the terrace.
Accommodation:
Sobek Stone House (or similar)
Grade: Premium Hotel
Single room available
Swimming pool available, meals provided: none.
If you're interested in the optional sunrise balloon trip, we recommend booking it for your first morning in Cappadocia. This gives you plenty of time to rebook in the case of cancellation. Please see the optional excursions details for more information.
This morning, we'll drive a short distance to Kizilcukur (Red) Valley, the start of our first hike. Sometimes known as the 'red hole', Kizilcukur is possibly the hottest valley in the region. Hidden in its array of fairy chimneys is The Church with Grapes where there are frescoes depicting viticulture and fruit growing. Eventually, we'll reach the small village of Cavusin which lies on top of a collapsed section of an early Christian cave city. This was caused by a huge rockslide which, together with earthquakes and natural erosion, caused a split in the plateau. The atrium of the church at Cavusin has cascaded down, exposing some of the frescoes.
We'll then ascend Bozdag Table Mountain for views of the surrounding area from Cappadocia's highest point at 1,300 metres/4,265 feet above sea level. After the walk, we'll drive to the local town of Avanos, famous for millennia for its pottery. Here, we'll have a pottery demonstration followed by the opportunity to explore this riverside town.
Today's 12 kilometre/7.5 mile walk is expected to take around five to six hours with a total ascent of 250 metres/820 feet.
Meals Provided: Breakfast
Today's walk is slightly further afield in the Ihlara Valley, located a 90-minute drive from Goreme. We plan to make a stop en-route to visit Kaymakli Underground City either at the start or end of the day depending on timings. Built by Christians escaping Arab oppression and once home to 3,500 people, this troglodyte cave-city is one of the largest of 34 similar excavations in Cappadocia. Built under the Citadel of Kaymakli, it contains nearly 100 tunnels on eight subterranean floors. We'll explore the four that are open to the public, containing stables, a church and storage places.
We'll start our walk in the Ihlara Valley, along a trail that follows the river downstream passing the villages of Belisirma and Selime. The narrow, steep-sided Ihlara Valley, dotted with rock-cut churches, was once the favourite retreat of Byzantine monks. This valley was formed by primeval earthquakes and the once rushing river is now a quiet stream. As we walk along the winding valley, with cliffs reaching up to 170 metres in some places, we'll see small garden cultures that originally would have provided for the colonies making them self-sufficient. There are many rock-cut churches in this valley with well-preserved frescoes dating from the 9th century.
Today's 13 kilometre/8.1 mile walk is expected to take around five hours with a total descent of around 100 metres/328 feet.
As it's the mid-week point of our tour, we've planned a shorter walk for today. Today's bus transfers are included but you might prefer to take it easy and relax in Goreme instead.
We'll start the day with a short drive to Cat town where we'll begin our walk. The route follows a path with yet more great scenes for photography enthusiasts, passes by huge dovecotes that hosted thousands of pigeons, and continues on the valley floor. The route is filled with hawthorn, oleaster, and rosehip bushes and the walk ends at Aciksaray ruins - a 10-11th century Byzantine site of cave houses, churches and a monastery. After our walk, we'll drive to Urgup, another of Cappadocia's towns, where we'll learn more about the local wine-making industry and get to try some wine. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure back in Goreme.
In the evening, we'll have a Turkish cookery lesson in a local restaurant, most likely our hotel restaurant, and dinner is included.
Today's optional 7 kilometre/4.4 mile walk is expected to take around two to three hours with a total descent of around 350 metres/1,148 feet.
Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner
This morning, we'll walk in Akvadi (White) Valley where we can further appreciate the geology of the region. Three volcanoes erupted 10 million years ago, spreading ash all over the region. This hardened into a soft, porous stone called tufa. Wind, water and sand have eroded portions of the tufa to form the almost alien landscape which we see today.
The walk leads us to Uchisar, an area renowned for its number of 'fairy chimneys'. These remarkable structures are formed as a result of a hard boulder being caught in the tufa so that as the erosion process occurs, it leaves the boulder delicately perched on top of the slender pillar. We'll also visit Uchisar 'Castle' which, situated high on a rocky outcrop, gives commanding views of the entire region.
This afternoon will be spent walking along Pigeon Valley to Goreme, where we'll visit a traditional Turkish tea shop and learn how to make Turkish tea or coffee. Finally, we'll visit Goreme Open Air Museum to explore the splendid cluster of monastic Byzantine artistry with rock-cut churches, chapels and monasteries - a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Today's 15 kilometre/9.3 mile walk is expected to take around five hours with a total ascent and descent of around 350 metres/1,148 feet.
After breakfast this morning, we'll drive to the Gomeda Valley where today's walk begins. As well as the landscape, this region is also renowned for its wine as the fine volcanic soil is very fertile. Viticulture has been here since the Hittites, but it was the exiled Christians who really developed the vineyards, and, for a while, wine was exported under the label of mineral water. Alcohol is prohibited in Islam, and so much of the wine is now grown for export and for the non-Muslims in Turkey.
Our trail takes us through the fascinating old Greek village of Mustafapasa whose ruins we can explore. After lunch here we'll continue on our hike leading to Ortahisar village.
Today's 14 kilometre/8.7 mile walk is expected to take around five to six hours with a total ascent and descent of around 400 metres/1,312 feet.
The final walk of our tour is from the hotel on a circular route that takes us through the Zemi Valley to Kiliclar (swords) Valley and finally the Meskindir Valley back to Goreme. The Zemi Valley is around 7 kilometres/4.4 miles long and the path makes its way gradually downhill passing apple and grape orchards.
Today's 12 kilometre/7.5 mile walk is expected to take around five hours with a total ascent and descent of around 250 metres/820 feet.
There are no activities planned today, so you're free to depart from Goreme at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day, luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to depart from Kayseri Airport (ASR) which is around a one-hour drive from the hotel.
Is this the tour for you?
- We've graded the walks on our tour of Cappadocia as moderate - you should have a good level of fitness and ideally have prior hiking experience to take part.
- Some routes have occasional, short sections of steep ascent or descent. All of the treks follow undulating trails and the terrain can be rocky and loose in places, particularly on the ascents and descents.
- During the summer months, it can be incredibly hot in Turkey, although as Cappadocia sits at around 1000 metres/3,280 feet it avoids the excessive heat experienced in lower areas on the coast. If you're travelling on a summer departure, be prepared for hot weather with light layers, sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle to carry at all times. Early mornings and evenings in spring and autumn can be cooler.
- Expect much cooler temperatures from November to March, when day time temperatures can fall below 10 degrees, particularly over Christmas. If snow falls in these months, it normally only lasts a few days and we will still hike and you will be provided with snow shoes. You may choose to bring walking poles at this time of year in case of wet or snow conditions.
- Typical Turkish breakfasts will have a selection of cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, salad, eggs, fruit, jam, honey, pastries and bread with tea and coffee. Often there will also be a simple cereal provided to cater for foreign guests.
- Vegetarians will generally be well catered for as many dishes are based on vegetables and dairy products.
- Please note that availability of ingredients for restricted diets such as gluten - free or dairy-free is very limited in Turkey and we strongly recommend you bring specialised dietary items with you.

Trip information
April, May, late-September and October are generally pleasantly warm, with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade. Summers, June through to mid-September can be very hot with temperatures reaching mid-thirties or above. On especially hot days we try to avoid the heat as best we can with earlier starts. In late-October, November and March shoulder seasons, temperatures are cooler with an increased chance of rain. Despite these cooler temperatures it can be a perfect time to visit Turkey's amazing ancient sites and Istanbul as visitor numbers are lower. In winter you can expect cold weather and more rainfall. Temperatures inland on the Anatolian Plateau, in places such as Cappadocia, are always cooler than the coast thanks to the altitude up to 1000masl; and as a result temperatures are slightly cooler in the heart of summer and it isn't unusual to get snow in winter and cold days in shoulder seasons.

Optional activities The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.
Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon - approx 220-230 € (April - June), 250-270 € (September - November). Please note that the price is set by the balloon operators and can vary in accordance with supply and demand, and at times of high demand the price could reach 300 € or above. We advise you book this for the first morning in Cappadocia in case of cancellation to maximise chance to rebook on subsequent days. Trips normally return to hotel before 8am and in time for breakfast. This balloon excursion does not form part of your included Explore holiday package. We recommend you call the provider in advance to book your space Kaya Kapadokya Balloons -+90 384 341 46 48 or Istanbul Balloons - +90 384 271 30 62 - or alternatively ask your leader to request a representative of these companies come to the hotel so you can book and pay directly with them. September and October tend to be the busiest months, sometimes filling up a few weeks in advance, so it is advisable to pre-book before travel to avoid disappointment.
The long Turkish summer can be hot, although Cappadocia is situated at around 1000 metres above sea level which helps to avoid the hottest temperatures of summer. In the spring and autumn, a warmer sweater and jacket is recommended for the evenings, as is lightweight rainwear. In the winter, good quality rainwear is more suitable as there is a good chance of encountering rain or snow. Temperatures may drop below freezing at night so wrap warmly - layers are best. When visiting mosques, women should cover their head, shoulders and knees, so it's handy to pack a scarf. Men should also ensure their knees are covered.
We always recommend waterproof walking boots with ankle support and good grip for walking holidays. We suggest that on international flights you either carry your walking boots in your hand luggage or wear them - should your luggage be lost or delayed, your own boots are the one thing that will be irreplaceable. Comfortable trainersandals are recommended for the town/relaxing in the evenings.
Bring a water bottle, sunblock, sunhat, sunglasses and insect repellent. We also recommend bringing your swimwear for the hotel pool. Walking poles may be useful for some people, especially for the steeper sections where it is loose and sandy underfoot and can be slippery. Snow shoes will be provided for you if needed on tour.
Food and drink The costs for meals may vary depending upon location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given are an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the centre of a major city may charge more.
Foreign exchange, transport information, accommodation notes.
If you're up early in the morning, you'll be able to see hot air balloons filling the sky from the terrace. Please note that there are some resident cats in the communal areas so please enquire if concerned about allergies.
Food and drink
Can you drink the water? It is generally possible to drink the local tap water, therefore to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles we recommend you bring a refillable water bottle with you. Your leader will advise you on refill points each day.

Happiness Promise
There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.
That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.
We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.
We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.
How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.
Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.
We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email [email protected] and we will get to work right away.

Trekking in Cappadocia Tour Details
Trekking in cappadocia overview.
The fairy chimneys and secret valleys of Cappadocia offer the opportunity for some of the most fascinating day walks to be enjoyed anywhere in the world. The famous troglodyte villages and the amazing scenery are best enjoyed on foot. In this one-week tour, walking possibilities are endless in this area of cave-lived valleys and surreal rock formations. The walking is of moderate difficulty and is generally between 4 and 5 hours each day. There is also time to visit some of the attractive villages on route.
Trekking in Cappadocia Itinerary
You will be picked up at the airport and transferred to Göreme. Enjoy dinner and an overnight in Göreme.
Pigeon Valley to Love Valley
This moderate walk will show you the hidden valleys of the area with their vineyards and orchards of walnut, quince and apricot trees. Our walk starts at 9.00hrs. Start walking through the Pigeon valley. It is a great walk from Göreme along the valley floor to Uçhisar (4km). The valley is named for the many pigeon houses or dovecotes carved into the rocks and cliffs. Years ago, the pigeons were used as message carriers as well as food and their droppings were used as fertilizer. Afterwards, the path takes us to Uçhisar where you’ll visit the castle to enjoy spectacular views and have time to wander in the town before lunch. Lunch is in a local family-run restaurant in Uçhisar. The view of the valley is exquisite. They serve local Turkish food in traditional clay pots. You will taste several different delicious and famous Turkish dishes. After lunch, head for White valley characterized by its small fields, lush vegetation and strange rock formations. On the spot where you find the particularly beautiful fairy chimneys (Love Valley), you can enjoy a taste of the freshly pressed orange juice. After the break, your gentle path leads us back to Göreme.
Kavak Village to Gomeda Valley
This trip introduces you to the traditional villages of Cappadocia. Your morning transfer takes you to rural Kavak; a farming town where tourists do not normally tread. You’ll walk from here to Bahçeli where you have a cup of tea at the local tea house. From here, walk an undulating route to Ayvalı and stop for lunch in Aravan for an authentic, casual, delicious meal with friendly service.
This is the only place in the region that offers organic food. After lunch, walk through Gomeda valley.
Gomeda Valley to Çavuşin
After breakfast, take a transfer to Gomeda valley where you have finished your walk the day before. Your morning walk through the Pancarlik valley takes you to Ortahisar, a quiet town with a Byzantine/Seljuck fortress. After a short wander in the town, you’ll be driven to Kızılçukur (Red valley) where you’ll walk in the afternoon. Finish our walk at Çavuşin.
Çavuşin to Rose Valley
After breakfast, start walking. This tour is an opportunity to break away from the classical trekking routes in the area; it’s for people who like heights. After a short wander in the village, ascend through the deserted houses to reach the little-known church of John the Baptist, with its unique paintings. Your path continues to the summit of Bozdağ Mountain where a panoramic view of the region awaits, including Uçhisar, Göreme, Çavuşin, Avanos, Ortahisar and Zelve open-air museum. With the spectacular views of Mount Erciyes in the background, follow a smooth path over the plateau and descend for lunch in a small family-run restaurant in Red valley. Visit the winery and the Grape church and start your afternoon walk in Rose Valley. On the way visiting the pigeon houses and the Cross Church.
Derinkuyu Underground City to Selime Monastery
Today you’ll visit the only evergreen place in the whole of Cappadocia, Ihlara valley. But first, drive to Derinkuyu Underground City, one of the wonders of Cappadocia. The settlement was dug as deep as 5 layers below ground level and used for hiding for centuries. After seeing the underground city you’ll be driven to Ihlara town and start our walk in the valley.
This 13km hike is generally an easy walk, following the river at the bottom of the deep canyon, there are some short parts where you have to scramble on rocks. Willow and poplar trees will decorate your way with beautiful birds gliding by. Walk about 3.5 hours and en-route visit several rock-cut churches carved out of the vertical canyon walls. Some are covered in really unique wall paintings. One great discovery was to find a rock-cut mosque next to one of the churches, both cut out of the rocks. It is the first example of a rock-cut mosque ever found.
After a late lunch, continue walking by the river down to Selime town, where the walk ends nearby Selime Monastery, another amazing structure cut out of the natural rock.
Paşabağ to Avanos and the departure
Enjoy a light day today. You’ll start from the hotel and walk to one of the wonders of Cappadocia: Paşabağ. It is a short walk (1.5hrs) but for those who do not want to walk it is possible to transfer by minibus to Paşabağ and rejoin the group there.
Drive to Avanos, the second biggest town of Cappadocia, where the longest river of Turkey passes through. This Kızılırmak (Red River) was known in Antiquity by its' ancient name ‘Halys’. After enjoying lunch in Avanos you will learn that this town is famous for its' pottery art as well. Making pottery from the rich clay deposits of the river is in fact a cultural heritage that Cappadocia inherited from the Hittites.
Enjoy the free afternoon. In the afternoon you have an optional visit to a Turkish bath for relaxing and massage.
At the end of the day, you’ll be transferred to the airport.

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Travel Expert Diaries
A moment in cappadocia turkey.

Our comfortable base for the week is the Sobek Stone House - a characterful, stone-built, hotel located on the outskirts of Goreme. Facilities include an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sauna, restaurant and a terrace bar.

It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the tour, including all optional activities. Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip. The cost of many of our Polar Voyages will exceed the capped amount covered by standard insurance premiums and you will be required to pay an additional premium to cover the full value of your trip. Please ensure that you are covered for the full amount of your holiday cost, as insufficient cover could invalidate a claim under the policy. Medical and repatriation insurance cover is not mandatory for UK residents who are travelling on trips within the United Kingdom. Read more information about what travel insurance is required.
