3. Open the application downloader. It will be called LastPass.dmg.

4. Drag LastPass into the Applications folder. 

5. Click "Replace" if your Mac prompts you that a version of LastPass already exists.

6. Open LastPass when the download is complete and sign in.

7. Open Safari, and in the topline menu bar in your Mac tap Safari (next to the Apple symbol), and then select "Preferences."

8. Enable LastPass permissions in your Mac's Extensions settings, if they haven't been already.

You're all set! Now when you browse Safari you can access LassPass with one click on the ellipsis icon, to the left of the address bar.

LastPass is a password manager for nearly all operating systems and browsers. It is a competitor to 1Password , Keeper , ZOHO , etc. The idea is nowadays, with many different accounts for banking, social networks, shopping, and more - it’s impossible to create and remember secure passwords for all the different sites that we use. Instead, you could remember one long, secure password, which you give to your password manager to then “unlock” all your other passwords. All of your other passwords are completely random, very secure, and stored by your password manager. This prevents you from having to remember multiple passwords - and eventually forgetting your passwords, as well as the dangerous tactic of password reuse !

I highly recommend looking into a password manager!

Not to spoil the beans or anything… but I just bought a 2020 M1 Mac Mini ! It should greatly enhance my video production capabilities (coming from a 2014 MacBook Pro which did not have H.265 encoding/decoding via hardware acceleration). Excited to see what this M1 chip is capable of and to help give me a better idea if I should get a 2021 16” MacBook Pro with a possible M2 chip in it… possibly being released in September 2021 🤞 ( spoiler alert !!)

My issues was that I attempted to install Lastpass via the Mac App Store (it has a 2.6/5 rating for a reason). After installing it, it did not prompt me to install the Safari extension. Uninstalling it and installing the direct download from LastPass worked for me.

Life is easier now!

Between my work and my personal websites I have over 250 sites, Log in’s, and passwords to try and remember. Which is virtually impossible for me! So I had been using an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of them all and I just had the spreadsheet password-protected. But we all know Excel passwords are so easy to break but that was the best way for me to keep track of my websites and all the supporting information to access them. When I started looking for a password keeper I contacted my company‘s IT department and asked them what they recommend. They said hands down it would be the LastPass App. And they are absolutely right! I am able to keep everything I need in the app since it also has a notes section where I can keep other supporting information like account numbers, pin numbers, etc. I also like that I can log into LastPass from any one of my devices, launch any of my websites directly from the app, and have it automatically log me in. I am completely satisfied with the ease of use and versatility of this app! I highly recommend it! It is also one of the most secure password keepers on the market as long as you have a good strong password for it. ***Just beware,*** do not ever forget your password to access LastPass. You will not be able to retrieve it nor will LassPass be able to reset it for you.

When is Last Pass gonna straighten out their freaking problem recognizing my phone. It’s not my fault that I have an Apple phone which has security features that puts my phone in different places. But you would think that after verifying with two-step by email that would be enough. But o-no. You have to tell me over and over that you don't recognize my phone.. And today I went around and around in circles with Last Pass. It’s sent me an email to verify me. I clicked on verify and it said thank you. Then at the top it said login. So I clicked on it and logged into my account. Well guess what? It freaking said it didn’t recognize my login. Around and around and around. I bet I spent an hour . And you want me to pay for premium ? Number one , I can’t ever talk to somebody. You make it too hard so that means you’re understaffed. You’re out there to make a big buck. I pay you a premium price and I can’t get help because you never have my problem in the help section. And another thing. You’re so understaffed that you have to get the community to do your work for you. are use LastPass for one thing and one thing only. It’s just a way for me to store my passwords without having to write them down and hide them in my house. I am starting to wonder if there is a better password storage out there better than LastPass as far as getting help. I don’t even think that you have Support tickets anymore because I haven’t been able to find one.

Needs a lot of work

Being generous with 3 stars here. Why? Well, the main purpose here is remembering and autofilling login information. Although it does, but only through the browsers add on extension, which we have to be logged in to use. If you use many browsers: it will log you off when you log into another. Example: switching between chrome and Ms edge. The settings here aren’t effective. I have mine set to remain logged in on all devices. Nop. Doesn’t do that. If I move 3 feet away to my second desk top I need to start logging on again. iPhone app is more like a “bookmarks” directory, as so far it failed to remember and fill in anything. Unless I click on a website direct from the app. Painful. Another thing. That annoying forsaking icon on everything. I do a ton of data entry and this thing is blocking my view of the lines in all forms. I don’t want the form auto fill and clicked that off and makes no difference. If you are online filling a form: you got last pass icon blocking your lines. I paid for this already but I am deleting and losing my money. It’s way too painful. FYI. I also installed the desk top resident app. Have no idea what they have that whatsoever. It does: absolutely not a single thing. As I said. The product has a nice GUI. Easy to use. Only if it works and does what it supposed to do. Sadly. Not.

MacBook Pro 2019 running Sonoma.

It also works ok using the MS Edge extension on the same MBP and I can use the LastPass app vault to copy/paste passwords but it's not working with the extension (so loses the functionality completely)

I've removed LastPass and the extension, reinstalled but I get the same issue. Tried resetting my master pwd also no joy. Reset safari using various methods and upgraded from Ventura to Sonoma. Nothing doing.

I recently upgraded to Sonoma, but this was not working in Ventura also. Appears to be around the time the app went exclusively to the App Store version. I'd like to be able to try 4.16 on this MacBook

I have another MBP running Sonoma which uses LP 4.16 version at the moment which works fine. I'd like to be able to try 4.16 on this MacBook but can't see where I can download this now. Also works fine on my iOS devices.

Progress! LastPass support asked me to turn off Private Relay in my iCloud settings. After doing that, and then restarting safari and signing back into the LastPass Mac app, it's working! I've done a few restarts, and so far it's worked consistently.

Fingers crossed that was the issue.

I have had the same problem. After updating to MacOS Sonoma the Vault LP app and chrome extension is working fine, but the extension in Safari is not. In Safari, after updating to Sonoma, when I clicked on it the extension it is blank (ie. a small empty box appeared below the extension button. It kind of looked like an empty speech bubble from a comic strip).  Then, about a week later, the extension started to appear as it should when it is clicked on in Safari, but it said my vault was empty and had no passwords. I decided to re-install the LastPass app but now the extension has gone back to the original bad behavior of appearing as an empty comic strip speech bubble when I click on it. Just to reiterate, the LastPass Vault application has worked fine this whole time, but I miss the extension automatically filling in passwords and generating new passwords.

I noticed that the LastPass app has not been updated since before the release of MacOS Sonoma so I am guessing it is a major compatibility issue with the new version of Safari. LastPass, either figure out a solution that we, the users, can perform and communicate it to us or fix this with an update ASAP.

Several app updates, currently on 4.123 (860) and this is still not working.

Tried multiple ways to remove and eradicate Lastpass using app cleaners etc  & reinstall from scratch, but I get the same result of empty vault for the safari extension only

I also have the same issue immediately after upgrading to macOS Sonoma 14.0. My Safari was already at version 17 prior to the OS upgrade. I also installed the mac app from the App Store  only less than two weeks ago, and that worked fine with macOS Ventura 13.x and Safari 17.

The vault in the mac app and the extension in Firefox behave fine. Similar to the original post, I have also tried various combinations of restarting the browser and the computer, uninstalling (with removal of all related files hidden in the Library folders), clearing local cache, re-logging in, etc.

Correction about my last post. Mine only sometimes works. Usually the extension does not work on the most up-to-date Mac version (Sonoma 14.2.1) on Safari. It is very frustrating. I'll reboot Safari and then it will work for a bit and then the next day it stops working. Once it stops working, one of two things will happen when I click on the extension in Safari:

I haven't had it in a working state for several weeks now, over several reboots, safari restarts and Mac app log-in-log-outs. 

I've seen both outcomes described above, plus one more (which is most common for me) which is that the extension opens and all I see is a LastPass safe icon with a spinning handle. 

I've still got an active support ticket, through which I' sharing logs and videos, so fingers crossed some progress is made.

This is very disappointing news that the LastPass Safari Extension and Apple Private Relay are mutually incompatible. I certainly don't want to sacrifice Apple's cutting-edge privacy features for a password manager, so it may be time to start looking for other password management solutions. Rumor has it that LastPass is also completely unable to support Macs with Apple Silicon, anyway.

I agree, PhantomSoul. The really weird thing is that the LastPass Chrome extension on the same system works just fine. I can have both browsers up next to each other and attempt to login to a site and Chrome's LP works fine (recognizes site and does autofill), while the Safari LP comes up blank. Unacceptable for a subscription security service to be that inconsistent on the same platform. Theres is no reason that we should be disabling security features like private relay in order to support a security feature like LastPass.

Also, I tried the suggested "fix" and it works. That said, I don't recommend keeping it in place until LastPass address this issue for Safari. The fact that they don't have the same issue on Chrome on the same machine gives me concern.

After testing the "turn Private Relay off" recommendation and finding that it works for Safari, I went back and turned Private Relay back on. I then tried Safari LP after shutting it down and restarting it, and it works consistently.

LP, can you please explain what is happening?

lastpass extension not in safari

I was having an issue with Last Pass and LogMeIn support told me to delete and reinstall LastPass - now the extension is no longer a part of Safari and I have followed all of the suggestions including downloading from the last pass website - when I open it the first time it tells me that the extension is needed and I click on open safari and nothing happens. I am running macOS Catalina v 10.15.7 and LastPass version 4.4.0

A user has to get extensions from App Store now.

Click Safari in the Safari menu bar and choose" Safari Extensions".

App Store will open and in the search bar enter Last Pass.

Get it. Enable it in Safari > Extensioins

In order to use it on my MacBook, I have to copy and paste separately from the LastPass Vault each time. Thank you - The following solved issue from Logmein support

• Delete the app
• Make sure there is not lastpass information in your device
• Close the Browser
• download the extension again
• https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php
• try to install it

Thank for your response - I followed your suggestion but when I go to Safari Extensions after installing from the App Store, there are no extensions to enable.

Thank you! Ultimately, this did seem to be the fix. I thought re-installing by doing a "replace" would do it, but it didn't start working until I completely uninstalled.
