Historical tapestry of leith.
Leith, Edinburgh's vibrant port district, is a locale rich in history and character. Once an independent burgh, it has retained a distinct identity despite its incorporation into Edinburgh in 1920. This maritime heartland has been the backdrop to many of Scotland's pivotal moments, from its role in the Scottish Reformation to its significance in maritime trade. The area's past is imbued with tales of seafarers, merchants, and the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is now permanently moored here as a testament to Leith's enduring maritime legacy.
Leith's Climate: A Scottish Enclave
Leith enjoys a temperate maritime climate, similar to much of Scotland, making it an appealing destination year-round. Summers are mild, with temperatures averaging around 17°C (63°F), perfect for exploring the waterfront and outdoor dining. Winters are cooler and brisk, with occasional frosts, but rarely prohibit outdoor activities, thanks to the relatively moderate temperatures. This climate ensures that visitors can enjoy Leith's offerings in any season, from crisp winter walks along the shore to leisurely summer strolls through its historic streets.

Art enthusiasts will find The Corn Exchange Gallery, showcasing local artists, a delightful visit. Leith's blend of historical and modern attractions caters to all interests.
Local Cuisine and Leith's Culinary Delights
Leith stands out for its exceptional culinary scene, from traditional Scottish fare to international gastronomy. The area's seafood is particularly noteworthy, with fresh catches being a staple in local cuisine. Signature dishes such as Cullen Skink, a hearty seafood soup, and freshly prepared haggis offer a taste of Scotland's rich flavors. Moreover, Leith's dining scene is diverse, featuring everything from cozy pubs serving craft beers to upscale restaurants offering innovative dishes. Foodies will relish the opportunity to explore Leith's culinary landscape.

The buildings of this vibrant capital city , from the historic houses of the Royal Mile to the elegant Georgian terraces and crescents of the New Town, offer the perfect complement to the natural setting. The city's layout is linear, in a pattern set by Castle Rock and Castle Ridge, down which the Royal Mile descends to the palace of Holyroodhouse. North of this lies a shallow valley holding the lovely Princes Street Gardens, with Waverley Station, the city's main railroad station at the eastern end. Above the gardens, and to the north is Edinburgh's main street, Princes Street. This is an ideal vantage point from which to view the castle and Old Edinburgh.

Norwegian Cruise Line to Launch New Homeport in Europe
The cruise line will launch sailings from Finland in 2026.
Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line will launch trips from Finland in 2026, inaugurating a brand-new homeport for the company.
Starting in June 2026, the cruise line will launch trips across the Baltic on the Norwegian Sun from both Copenhagen and — for the first time — Helsinki , according to the company. These voyages will stretch from seven to 10 days and stop in a port nearly every day, including in Norway, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Sweden.
The cruise line will also include an overnight stay in Copenhagen on select nine-day trips from Helsinki.
“At NCL, we take pride in offering our guests various options to plan where they want to vacation,” David J. Herrera, the president of Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement. “Whether they choose our seven-day sailings, longer immersive voyages, or cruises that begin and end in a new destination, we make it so our guests can vacation with ease with us from start to finish.”
Norwegian will sail the Baltic from June 2026 through October 2026.
The Norwegian Sun was built in 2001 and refurbished in 2021, and can accommodate 1,878 passengers. The ship features a pair of outdoor pools, game shows like “Deal or No Deal” and “Wheel of Fortune,” and more.
In addition to Helsinki, Norwegian will sail a robust summer 2026 European season, including 22 overnight stops and 11 different embarkation ports across 10 different countries. The cruise line will also stop at several new ports, including Portree on the Isle of Skye in Scotland and Palamós in Spain.
Helsinki isn’t the first new homeport Norwegian will launch from in 2026. Starting in April 2026, the company plans to become the first cruise line to sail from Philadelphia in years , heading to Bermuda, Canada, and New England.
Norwegian was named one of Travel + Leisure readers’ favorite mega-ship ocean cruise lines for this year, which looks at everything from cabins and facilities to food, service, itineraries, and more.

Construction of TUI’s Mein Schiff Relax Progressing in Italy
- August 28, 2024
The construction of TUI Cruises’ new Mein Schiff Relax is progressing well at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.
In a series of pictures recently shared by the company, the 161,000-ton vessel can be seen undergoing interior outfitting while receiving finishing touches to its exterior.
After being floated out in late 2023 , the Mein Schiff Relax is scheduled to enter service for the Germany-based brand in Spring 2025.
As the largest ship ever built for TUI Cruises, the newbuild will be the first in a new series of cruise ships known as the InTUItion class.
Developed by Fincantieri, the prototype puts a focus on sustainability with dual-fuel engines that can be powered by LNG and MGO.
The 4,000-guest vessel is also designed to be future-proof thanks to its ability to burn other low-emission fuels such as bio- or e-LNG.
In its interiors, the Relax is also debuting new concepts for TUI Cruises, including an expanded pool deck..
The ship will also introduce a new ship-within-ship concept that includes five different suite categories and several private areas.
Additional highlights of the design include an increased proportion of balcony cabins, with 85 percent of all staterooms featuring a private terrace.
In a first for TUI, the vessel will also offer balcony cabins for solo guests in a new stateroom category.
During its inaugural season, the Mein Schiff Relax is set to offer a series of itineraries in the Western Mediterranean.
Starting in mid-March 2025, the ship will sail seven- to ten-night cruises in the region departing from the Spanish ports of Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
In October, the vessel repositions to Santa Cruz de Tenerife for a winter season cruising to the Canary Islands and Madeira.
After the Mein Schiff Relax, TUI Cruises is set to welcome a yet-unnamed sister ship during the second quarter of 2026.
