Since my first taste in 2014, I’ve been a fan of this series, but I haven’t re-visited it for a review till now with the Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24. And while it may have been about 8 years since I sat down for a formal review, I haven’t been a stranger.

At whiskey festivals, events, brand tastings and private tasting, bottles of Jefferson’s Ocean show up and while I haven’t loved each one I’ve had, I haven’t hated any of them either. They’re all at the very least enjoyable. Let’s hope this one keeps that trend.

Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 Tasting Notes

NOSE Oaky, caramel, leathery dried fruit, Banana’s Foster, vanilla, baking spice and a touch biscuity.

Good side of standard bourbon, nothing revolutionary on this one, but nice.

PALATE Oaky, caramel, baking spice, Banana’s Foster, vanilla, baking spice, biscuity, roasted nuts.

Good side of standard bourbon, nice, but nothing great.

FINISH Medium -> Banana, oak, caramel and nutty.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL Decent, medium, soft and warm.

Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 – Overall Thoughts and Score

Like most of the Jefferson’s Ocean releases, this batch is decent. I do like my earlier batch a bit more, but there is nothing to dislike in this batch. It’s a soft, easy sipper with an interestingly heavy banana note. It gets more oaky and spiced as it opens, but never becomes a heavily oaked or spiced bourbon. It stays soft and a bit fruity.

On the whole, this Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 comes through as a slightly above average bourbon. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s tasty, worth at least a drink and great to mix with, but there isn’t a ton of depth to it so it ends up being on the lighter side overall.

Poor Voyage 24 Route

Unfortunately you decided to review voyage 24. I found this voyage lacking and your rating is correct. After having a less than excellent experience with this voyage 24 Jeffersons Ocean, I wondered what was different. Well, looking at the voyage path and notes. It stayed in the Carribean and in Port an awful lot. It did not travel north into the cold waters and air of the Pacifuc and Atlantic and also the warm waters of both Oceans. Sad. No wonder another reviewer said they saw the price downed to half its normal $75-80 per fifth.

Hi Josh, I was doing some last minute Thanksgiving shopping at Costco and saw this marked down to 39.97. Based on your review I picked up a few for gifts and of course drinking. I found a drop of water is how I liked this best. I tasted butterscotch along with some spice on the finish. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving Josh!

It’s been some time since we last checked in with the Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea series. Nick reviewed Voyages 2-4, giving the highest mark to Voyage 2 . With a Wheated Ocean and Jefferson’s Journey (bourbon traveled by boat from Louisville to NYC) expected in 2018 , it seems fitting to take another look at a more recent Ocean release. We were curious to see how a recent release tastes, how it compares to previous Ocean releases, and how it compares to the standard Jefferson’s Reserve. Voyage 12 opens with rich butterscotch which is quite assertive at times on the nose. Floral and bubblegum scents also pull through combining into a gentle aroma that is quite pleasing. A unique flavor pops on the palate. It’s not in-your-face different, but more subtle. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s straight up salty, but it does have a brine-like quality and even a hibiscus-like flavor to it. In a way it also tastes like the malted barley got enhanced to a degree by the voyage. Not so much that it tastes like a single malt whiskey, but more so than a typical bourbon. This trails off in the finish as oak takes over and leaves a slight dry aftertaste. Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea has always had to fight against the gimmicky moniker, as aging bourbon on a boat will do that. There’s no way to tell for sure if the standard Jefferson’s Reserve Bourbon is the same bourbon that also goes into Jefferson’s Ocean, or if it’s some variation of it. Comparing them directly to each other, there is certainly a difference in taste. Jefferson’s Reserve has a very traditional flavor profile that is a bit more brash both in its palate and finish. Voyage 12 is mellower and this brings out a bit more nuances in the flavors. Its unique tasting palate simply offers something a little different. This of course also comes at a premium price point. Tasting Voyage 12 against Voyages 2 and 4, all three have elements that made them taste different than you would normally expect bourbon to taste. Voyage 2 has its thick mouthfeel and burnt brown sugar, where Voyage 4 has more earthiness. We’ll never know if these bourbons had these elements before being aged on a boat, but tasting them now, as subtle as they are, it’s evident they bring something else to the glass that the standard Jefferson Reserve doesn’t. Call it a gimmick if you want, but it’s clear Jefferson’s Ocean Voyages are unique tasting and are a better sip versus the standard Jefferson’s Reserve. In the end it will be up to the individual drinker if these oh-so subtle changes are enough to warrant its premium price. However after this many voyages, cask strength versions, store selections, and new variations on the way, one can conclude that they just might be.   ‍ The sample used for this review was provided at no cost courtesy of Pete. Captain’s Log

At the stroke of midnight, the ship carting Jefferson’s OCEAN Aged at Sea° Voyage 29 Wheated used its side-thrusters to move away from the dock and out into the channel that would take it to the Atlantic. The bright lights that illuminated the busy Port of Savannah slowly faded in the distance, revealing a beautiful moonlit sky over a tranquil sea. A tropical storm southeast of Bermuda stirred up moderate seas that gently agitated the cargo but Voyage 29 avoided sailing directly into the storm en route to Manzanillo and the transit of the Panama Canal.

While there was no tropical depressions or cyclone activity in the eastern Pacific, strong, warm winds provided crystal clear days and nights but generated rough seas that persisted through the western Pacific.

Rounding Australia and traveling into the Indian Ocean, Voyage 29 continued its journey storm-free as the entire region was experiencing well below normal cyclone activity.The high wind and rough seas moderated below the equator as the ship traveled north to Singapore. Long passages of open ocean then gave way to frequent stops in China, Korea and Japan. While a busy time for the ship, the barrels of wheated bourbon aboard, quietly rested in the relatively calm coastal waters before heading out into the north Pacific and crossing to the west coast of America. Air temperatures dropped to the mid 50’s above and below the Port of Long Beach but that was as cold as it got through the entire trip. All in all, it was the perfect voyage for wheated bourbon. Air temperatures and sea conditions provided more contact with the wood and a spike in aging which tends to be slower than with rye whiskeys.

Enjoy the aromas of fresh baked bread, complex notes of vanilla and caramel, delicate hints of citrus and spice and the long, well rounded yet gentle finish of OCEAN Voyage 29 Wheated.
