Amazon Region

River exploration trips.

Colombia Amazon Tour

The Amazon is the main river in South America and the largest in the world, containing more water than the Nile, the Yangtze and the Mississippi combined. Its hydrographic basin is almost 40 per cent of South America, with its 7.05 million km2 that irrigates a vast region including Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Venezuela, Peru and Suriname. We will travel along the river to explore extraordinary villages and ecosystems in the largest jungle in the world, containing 10 per cent of the world's known.

Visit Local Indigenous Communities

Colombia Amazon Tour

The Amazon region is not only one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, but it is also a rich region in terms of ancient wisdom and traditions maintained by its indigenous communities. These indigenous communities live in perfect harmony with the nature around them. Some of them prefer to stay in areas of difficult access for us, while others prefer to live in villages where they produce handicrafts and show some of their traditional activities and rituals to visitors. During this tour, we will visit the communities of the Ticunas and Yaguas.

Hiking, Canopying and jungle Night Exploration

Colombia Amazon Tour

During this Colombia Amazon tour, we will have the opportunity to admire the incredible biodiversity of this region by canopying over the top of the Amazon trees at Tanimboca Nature Reserve, hiking in the jungle, and taking a tour at night to see black caimans at Marasha Nature reserve in Peru.

We will also have the opportunity to see monkeys, birds, black caimans, pink dolphins and the Victoria Regia lily, the largest member of the water lily family amongst other species.

Visit Puerto Nariño

Colombia Amazon Tour Puerto Narino

Located on the banks of the Loretoyaco River, Puerto Nariño is the second-largest urbanization in the Amazonas department. Most people living in this close-knit community have indigenous Yaguas or Ticunas heritage. We won't find cars in the small town of Puerto Nariño, as locals get around on foot or with canoes. We will learn more about the local culture, enjoy seeing how the people coexist with nature in this community along with the river bank and have a splendid night in this quaint town.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 travel to leticia and city tour.

Take a morning flight to Leticia, the main city in the Colombian Amazon region and one of the major ports on the Amazon river. It is also the city where Colombia, Brasil and Peru come together in a place known as the three frontiers (Las tres Fronteras), which allows you to visit the three countries in just one day.

Upon arrival in Leticia, your tour guide will be waiting for you at the Airport to start exploring this wonderful region of Colombia. This adventure will begin with Tabatinga, the neighbouring Brazilian city connected to Leticia by road and footpath. You will learn about the history of this town and visit some of the most interesting places there, such as the triple border and a viewpoint to see the magnificent Amazon river. Next, we will try Cachaza, the typical and famous Brazilian cocktail made from sugar cane distillation.

Then in Leticia, you will visit the tourist boardwalk or malecón turístico to see the colourful canoes and a little plaza with lots of shops and restaurants. The Museo Etnografico will also be one of the most educative stops during the tour. This museum provides great information about the indigenous communities inhabiting this region of Colombia. Finally, you will finish this tour with a visit to Parque de Santander at dusk to observe hundreds of parakeets returning from the jungle to feed and rest in the park. The noise is impressive, and even if you are not that interested in birds, there is no doubt that it is a unique experience.

Note: Museo Etnografico is closed on Sundays and Mondays

Overnight: Leticia Meal Plan: None

DAY 2 Amazon jungle exploration. Canopy, hiking and nocturnal expedition

Today, we will start exploring this part of the Colombian Amazon region by visiting two incredible nature reserves on the Colombian and Peruvian sides of the river.

First, we will head to Tanimboca Nature Reserve, located 11 kilometres from Leticia. This natural reserve of thirty hectares of protected forest is famous for its canopy activities. At the nature reserve, we will start with a short walk across the jungle to access the first platform by rope climbing, and then we will cross from one platform to another by a zip line. You will practically fly at the trees' top level to get a unique view of the jungle and its remarkable fauna and flora. We can do kayaking instead of the canopy if you prefer another activity.

Then we will continue the expedition to Marasha Nature Reserve in Peru, located 45 minutes by boat from Leticia. The dry and rainy seasons change the ways of accessibility in the Amazon. During the rainy or high water season, we will reach the reserve by boat, and during the dry or low water season, we will do it by walking; both journeys will take approximately 1.5 hours from the shore of the Amazon River.

While travelling from the river to the nature reserve, we will observe the great jungle landscape with its huge trees, monkeys, butterflies and multi-coloured birds, among other fauna and flora. On arrival at the reserve, a delicious grilled fish will be waiting for us to enjoy a traditional lunch.

The reserve is peaceful and offers a variety of activities, such as fishing and canoeing.

After dinner, there will be a tour to see the nocturnal activity in the jungle and search for black caimans.

Note: The rainy season goes from February to June, and the dry season from July to January.

Overnight: Marasha Natural Reserve Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3 Day Trip along the magnificent Amazon River and Puerto Nariño

After breakfast, we will travel along the Amazon river; we will have a few stops before arriving at Puerto Nariño.

Our first stop will be Mocagua, a local village in the buffer zone of Amacayacu National Park, mainly inhabited by the Ticuna indigenous community. The Ticuna constitute one of the most numerous peoples of the Amazon Basin, where approximately 7,879 people live there. During this visit, we will learn about their way of life and traditions and how they use wood and other natural materials from the jungle to create crafts.

We will also visit the Maikuchiga Foundation to see the conservation project started by biologist Sara Beneth that the young people from Mocagua now carry out. They are helping to protect the jungle by conserving species such as the Churuco monkey and rehabilitating and reintegrating rescued monkeys and wildlife victims of illegal trafficking, used as pets, or wounded by hunting. These rescued animals are released in the Colombian Amazon jungle after fully recovering. Finally, we will have a sighting and animal monitoring outing to understand the behaviour of the monkeys and their connection with the flora and other fauna.

For lunch, we will have a traditional dish. Then, we will continue our trip by crossing the border with Peru and visiting Cacao Island to see the sloth bear and the Victoria Regia, the endemic and icon flower of the region.

Finally, we will go to Puerto Nariño, inhabited mainly by local indigenous Yaguas and Ticuna; it is an environmentally friendly town where motorized vehicles are banned. It is on the edge of the river Loretoyaco without streets, cars or motorbikes. Instead, the "roads" are palm-lined sidewalks connecting the community's neighbourhoods. For their efforts to peacefully coexist with nature, Puerto Nariño was named the first tourism sustainable town in Colombia

Overnight: Puerto Nariño Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4 Surroundings of Puerto Nariño. Travel back to Leticia

After breakfast, you will explore the surrounding areas of Puerto Nariño. Depending on the time of the year, we will go to Lake Tarapoto or alternative places such as River Chineria, where we can see pink dolphins, sloths, manatees, and of course, the Victoria Regia lily.

Then we will transfer back to Leticia by boat to finish this unique exploration. Upon arrival in Leticia, we will transfer you to the Airport.

Note:  From August to October, the river's water level will be lower, so the entrance to the Lago Tarapoto may not be possible. If that is the case, we will go to other places to see dolphins, such as the river Chineria.

uncover colombia really covers colombia

My wife and I had been interested in visiting Colombia largely because my father worked in Barranquilla in the early to mid-1960s and I had not been back since then. I found Uncover Colombia online and entered into email conversations with Nidia Penagos about designing a trip. The result was an exceptional experience... – John, January 2020

colombia excels

Uncover Colombia is the best travel agency we have ever used, and we have traveled to many different countries and used many different agencies... The standout person was Nidia. She organized our trip to Colombia perfectly. We asked for different things to be done in our 11 days in Colombia. She included every place using aeroplanes and cars as modes of transportation. – Marla, January 2020

great colombia private tour company

I can highly recommend Uncover Colombia. I used the company for a week-long solo trip to Colombia spanning three cities: Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. They did a wonderful job for me, providing English-speaking guides in each of the cities and arranging transportation to various sites and internal flights from city to city... – Will, December 2019

We had a private tour with guide, Camilo, and driver also called Camilo. We were picked up from our hotel on time, and immediately camilo started to tell us interesting information on Colombia, nature etc. Our walk was amazing - we saw a condor and hummingbirds and Camilo was very knowledgeable about nature, history and politics... – Catrin, July 2019

exploring around colombia

Guides were excellent and spoke good English which helped as my Spanish is, shall we say, developing! The places for accommodation were also good, but ask if you would prefer smaller hotels as the company are very flexible. We had good communication with the local representative from Uncover Colombia while we were in the country, and very quick, helpful responses while planning from England. – John, April 2018

My husband and I recently visited Colombia for 28 days. The whole trip was organized by Uncover Colombia and they did a great job. This was a customized trip for just the 2 of us. We visited Bogota, Salento, in the Coffee Region, Cartagena, Santa Marta, the El Dorado Reserve and Leticia in the Amazon... – Lee C, March 2018

great trip to colombia!

We went on a grand tour of Colombia, visiting all the places my daughter (who lives there) recommended over a couple of weeks...Our trip couldn't have been any better. We were treated like royalty from start to finish - excellent hotels, guides and great places to visit. Thoroughly enjoyed every moment. What a beautiful country! – Mary, January 2018

exceptional colombia travel agent

My wife and I wanted to visit Colombia. We travel independently or with an agent who only deals with one country. From our first contact to a final meeting after our 3 week trip they performed brilliantly...Colombia exceeded our expectations and anyone wishing to go should choose to travel with Uncover Colombia. – Peter, March 2017

The Colombian Amazon

Nature and wildlife tour. Get the full Amazon experience on this trip. Hike through the rainforest, paddle on the river and meet the indigenous Huitoto. See pink dolphins, caimans, monkeys and countless birds in their natural environment. Spend a night in a treehouse and explore the forest canopy via ropes, hanging bridges and zip lines.

The Amazon region makes up over a third of Colombia's total territory. This immense area is home to a mind-blowing array of animals, plants and indigenous cultures. It is also the daily stage for amazing sights such as the sun rising from the forest canopy and the arrival of thousands of parakeets coming to roost for the night. The Colombian Amazon is the most biologically rich and diverse area in the country and is one of its most beautiful.

Everyone has a romantic idea of what an Amazon adventure involves: lots of trees and animals, time in the rainforest and on the river, interacting with tribal people, and trying exotic things. This trip has all of that and more. You'll go beyond sightseeing and experience the Amazon in fun, active and exciting ways. You’ll hike, paddle, climb, swim, fish, zip and rappel to get up close and personal to the rainforest and its features. This adventure will immerse you in the Colombian Amazon (and even a bit of the Peruvian Amazon) for a truly unforgettable experience.

Highlights and activities

  • Go on night hikes in the rainforest to search for caimans and other nocturnal animals.
  • Spend a night in a treehouse 12 meters (39 feet) above the forest floor.
  • Hike through the rainforest to visit a Huitoto community.
  • Try your hand at indigenous fishing techniques.
  • Travel by boat on the Amazon river and kayak in its tributaries and lakes.
  • See woolly monkeys, pink dolphins, capybaras and many other exotic animals in their natural habitat.
  • Climb up a rope to the forest canopy then take zip lines to move through the trees.

Tanimboca

Day 1: Tanimboca

Your Amazon adventure begins at the Leticia airport where your guide meets you and takes you to the Tanimboca Natural Reserve. The reserve is home to huge trees and is teeming with animals — especially at night. You do an initial exploration of the rainforest while the sun is up but the real action happens when it gets dark. On your nocturnal hike you'll see many animals that hide during the day — don't worry, all of them are small.

You spend the night in a treehouse at the forest canopy, 12 meters (39 feet) above the ground.

The Huitoto

Day 2: The Huitoto

Today you hike about two hours through the rainforest to a Huitoto village. The Huitoto (also spelled Witoto) are an indigenous people of the Amazon and are known for their artistic handcrafts and sustainable way of life. In the village you visit a Maloka, a traditional Amazonian dwelling. There you speak with the village elder and learn about his people's culture and traditions. If you are lucky the villagers will be making mambe on the day of your visit. Mambe is a green powder made out of toasted coca leaves that people in the Colombian Amazon chew. If it is mambe making day then you'll see how the Huitoto make it and you can try chewing the powder yourself – it is perfectly legal.

You also visit the chagras where the villagers grow their crops, and a nearby river where they catch fish. There you can try your hand at fishing and take a dip. In the afternoon you'll hike back to the Tanimboca reserve and spend the night in a forest cabin.

Marasha

Day 3: Marasha

After breakfast you get on a boat and travel on the Amazon River and cross an invisible border to get to Marasha, a natural reserve in Peruvian territory. From the main channel of the Amazon River you either hike or canoe (depending on the water level) deep into the rainforest to get to the Marasha lodge. The lodge is fronted by a lake full of exotic fish such as arowana, pirarucu, and yes, piranha. You can go kayaking and fishing in the lake, and even take a dip to disprove piranha myths. Many wild animals visit the lodge regularly, including toucans and capybaras.

At night you go on a hike to look for caimans before retiring to the Marasha lodge.

Woolly monkeys, pink dolphins and parakeets

Day 4: Woolly monkeys, pink dolphins and parakeets

You say goodbye to Marasha and travel to Mocagua back in Colombia. Mocagua is just outside the Amacayacu National Park and the indigenous Ticuna people who live there were traditionally hunters. In 2004 they agreed to stop hunting endangered species. Now, working with the Maikuchiga Foundation, the Ticuna of Mocagua are stewards of their environment and protect the endangered animals in their territory. You go on a 1.5 hour hike through the rainforest of Mocagua and see woolly monkeys, a species that is especially important to that area's ecosystem.

After visiting the woolly monkeys you will get back on the Amazon River and travel to Puerto Nariño, a riverside town that is environmentally sustainable and has no motorized vehicles. The water in the Puerto Nariño area is clean and it is a prime location for spotting wild pink dolphins.

Near the end of the day you go to Parque Santander in Leticia to see thousands of parakeets and other birds flying into the park's trees to roost. Then you go back to the Tanimboca reserve where you spend the night.

The Canopy

Day 5: The Canopy

It's the final day but the fun isn't over. After four days in the Amazon you get a broad view of the area from a higher perspective — literally. Using ropes and ascenders you climb up to a platform in the forest canopy. A network of hanging bridges and zip lines connects four different platforms and you spend the morning walking and zipping through the canopy. After enjoying the views you rappel to get back down to the forest floor.

At noon your Amazonian adventure comes to an end and you travel back to the Leticia airport.

This adventure is offered throughout the year. Contact us to schedule your Private Tour.

Colombia The Colombian Amazon

While much of the Colombian Amazon is inaccessible, you can visit the jumbled river port of Leticia and the charming eco-village of Puerto Nariño at any time of year.

As with the other Andean countries which share territory in the Amazon basin, Colombian Amazonia occupies a third of the national territory but is cut off both physically and culturally from the rest of the country. But with a rich ecosystem hosting a staggering array of tropical flora and fauna, and distinctive indigenous communities sprinkled along the river banks, it’s a beguiling destination for adventurous travellers.

With a history of disputed borders, the region has passed through turbulent times is now regarded as safe and peaceful, and tourism - still in its infancy among foreign visitors - is on the up. Little English is spoken, but the people are very friendly, and offer a genuine welcome.

There are no roads here. The only municipalities in Colombian Amazonas are the jumbly river port Leticia - accessible only by a two-hour flight from Bogotá and locally by river - and the idiosyncratic eco-village Puerto Nariño, reached solely by boat. The remaining 22 mostly riverside indigenous settlements - where there is no concept of private property and where evangelical churches thrive - earn a living from fishing, farming and a little tourism and are run by traditional self-governing councils.

The timeless, languid pace of life here in the sultry rainforest, where the seasonal rising and falling of the river’s water level is the most significant annual event,  contrasts markedly from the rest of Colombia. Perhaps there is more in common here with the Amazonia of Brazil and Peru, the borders with which converge on Leticia, and which you can visit on the same day.

Calanoa Lodge

Where to go when - our guide to the colombian amazon, the weather in the colombian amazon is wide and varied.

While much of the Colombian Amazon is inaccessible, you can visit the jumbly river port of Leticia and the charming eco-village of Puerto Nariño at any time of year. Here the seasons are split roughly in two, with the rainier season from Dec - Jun and the drier season Jul - Nov. During the rainier season, water levels in the rivers are high and many areas of the jungle flood. While some walking trails become inaccessible, you’ll have the chance to kayak through flooded parts of the rainforest. Temperatures at this time are hot, often over 30°C, and humidity is high. During the drier season the water levels lower, particularly in September - November, and there are fewer mosquitos. Most trails will now be accessible so you can hike further into the jungle, and chances of wildlife spotting are best this time of year. Temperatures are sweltering, sometimes over 40°C in the strong sun.

I pause, yet again, to wipe away the sweat escaping my bandana and pouring down my brow. I glance at my watch: 9:23 a.m. and it’s already 89 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m dressed in long trousers tucked into heavy gumboots and a long-sleeved shirt buttoned up to the top. Any exposed skin is fair game for mosquitoes.

Elvis, my guide, clicks his tongue and points up to the canopy, putting a finger to his lips. Just four feet away, a furry face peeps out from the leaves.

“Black-mantled tamarin,” Elvis whispers. I’ve never seen a monkey in the wild . And this white-whiskered one, characterized by its black, sleek, coat, interwoven with ripples of chestnut red, is only found in small pockets of Brazil , Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru . I soon spot another, and then a third. A whole family. Elvis beckons me to move on—there’s much more to see.

The Colombian Amazon, covering nearly 156,000 square miles—or 35 percent of the country—feels as if it is straddling eras: one foot in a primeval world of virgin rainforest and indigenous tribes, the other succumbing to the pressures of modernity, evident in Nike sneakers and satellite dishes. Much of it, though, is still untouched, frequented primarily by biologists eager to explore the vast rainforest. Hundreds of new species—including monkeys— have been discovered in just the last five years.

blackmantled tamarin

The black-mantled tamarin is one of 41 primate species found in Colombia.

For decades, Colombia was largely off-limits to tourists , due to a 50-year conflict that claimed more than 200,000 lives. As a result, the country’s southern wilds were left unchartered by tour operators, as the impenetrable rainforest became a haven for guerilla groups and drug runners. Instead, the tourism industry put down stakes in Peru, Brazil, and Ecuador. Now, as Colombia enters a new era of peace, tourists are venturing into the country’s jungles for the first time. There, they are finding eco-conscious and socially sustainable accommodations, where preserving the ecosystem and educating visitors takes priority over making a quick profit. Visitors can stay with indigenous tribes or in low-impact reserves first designed for biologists, researchers, and bird-watchers.

I’m staying at Calanoa Lodge , a private reserve and the only accommodation that even approaches luxury in the area. It’s owned by the Sampers: Marlene, a sociologist who works with indigenous communities, and her partner Diego, an artist who has made the lodging an experiment in tropical sustainable architecture.

To get to Calanoa is an expedition in its own right: For starters, it takes two hours to fly from Bogotá to Leticia, the hot, humid frontier town of the Amazon named after a beautiful woman a Peruvian engineer once fell in love with. As the plane approaches the one-runway airport, glimpses of treetops are visible through the low, dense cloud cover. We descend into the mist, and suddenly the rainforest is upon us. I see endless miles of thick, lush green interrupted by a murky, yellow-brown stripe snaking across the forest, splicing the land in two: the Amazon River.

It is along the river that guests must travel to reach the lodge, about 40 miles upstream from bustling Leticia. The boat zips past thatched-roofed villages, hugging the bends of the riverbank, until we reach a narrow wooden gangway leading to steep stairs that disappear into the forest. The air grows closer and my ears tune into tinny whistles of crickets, the calls of unfamiliar birds, and the distant howl of a monkey. Upon arrival, I spend an hour lazily swinging in a hammock, acclimatizing to the oppressive humidity; quickly lulled into a state of relaxation by the rhythmic soundtrack of the Amazon.

The eco-conscious Calanoa Lodge is as luxe as it gets in the wild Colombian Amazon.

After dinner, an upmarket, three-course affair of traditional chicken soup, fresh fish, and dulce de coco , it's time to embark on a “midnight hike,” something I’d been quietly dreading all afternoon due to a deeply irrational fear of spiders. In order to encounter the jungle's nocturnal inhabitants, guests are taken out in the dark and armed with flashlights. Led by Elvis and Jorge, another local indigenous guide, we trudge along a narrow path that the pair has forged themselves, ducking under tree boughs, pausing to gape at brilliant green grasshoppers and listen for night monkeys.

The 31 Best Walking Shoes for Long Travel Days

“Watch your step,” Elvis warns. “There are many things that can kill you here.” He regales me with tales of near misses with poison frogs, nightmarishly large spiders, and the multitude of snakes that lie camouflaged in the undergrowth. The Amazon truly comes alive at night. I find myself tuning in to every whistle, croak, and rustle, catching fleeting glimpses of neon-green jeweled caterpillars, and the occasional scurrying scorpion.

The following morning, it’s time to explore by day, under the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. Elvis imitates the squawk of the red-throated Caracara bird, and it replies. He turns to me with a grin, teeth green from chewing coca leaves: “He thinks I’m a baby bird.”

An hour into the hike, we reach a clearing, where a small branch is suspended in mid-air. “Want a go?” Elvis asks, and I realize it’s a swing, made by local children from stubby thick boughs tied together with strips of leaves and fastened to a ficus tree. I hop on, and swing for a few minutes. “It’s important to be a child sometimes,” Elvis says.

We reach the end of our hike, where, as if by magic, a narrow boat—painted forest green and sun yellow—is waiting for us as we emerge from the trees.

We glide under trailing vines, dodge trees materializing from the cloudy water like gnarled fingers, and finally head into the vast open waters of the Amazon, in search of the elusive pink river dolphin . A menacing dark cloud is on the horizon, and I peer over the edge and wonder aloud what would happen if this tiny boat capsized.

“You wouldn’t want to fall in,” Elvis says. “But you wouldn’t be eaten by caimans. The piranhas would get you first.”

I move to the middle of the boat.

How to Do It

There are regions of the Amazon better developed for tourists, with plusher accommodation and more well-oiled infrastructure. But the Colombian Amazon is still rough, rugged, and wild—exactly how an adventure should be.

If you are interested in exploring the area, Jacada Travel offers excursions into the Colombian Amazon, and is one of the few luxury tour operators to do so. While there is still a lack of high-end lodges, the travel company works with the highest quality accommodation in the region, also offering trips to remote indigenous communities. If you prefer to book directly, Calanoa Lodge assigns a local tour guide to every guest party, and will individually tailor your itinerary.

10 Things to See and Do in Colombia's Amazon Jungle Off-The-Beaten-Track

The Mavecure Hills

Colombia’s Amazon jungles are vast and barely explored: they cover a huge swathe of the country, yet most travelers are only familiar with the city of Leticia, Colombia’s southernmost point on the border with Peru and Brazil. However, there are many more amazing Amazonian destinations to explore in Colombia, so here are 10 things to see and do off-the-beaten-track in the Colombian Amazon.

Cerro azul rock paintings.

In the jungles surrounding the Amazon frontier city of San Jose del Guaviare, there are several remarkable archaeological sites preserving ancient Indigenous rock paintings, some dating back 10,000 years. The best of these sites is Cerro Azul, an impressive rocky hill jutting out of the forest, where the walls are covered in blood-red rock art depicting ancient symbols, birds, animals and even people.

Similar rock art to that found in Chiribiquete can be seen near San Jose del Guaviare

Chiribiquete National Park

Chiribiquete National Park is the real-life Lost World: a vast swathe of jungle, punctuated by giant rocky hills, and surrounded by sinuous rivers and huge rapids. It is said to even shelter Indigenous peoples who remain uncontacted by the outside world. There is no land access to this forgotten paradise, but it is possible to arrange tours to fly over Chiribiquete: it’s very expensive, but if you have the funds then it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to glimpse a true Lost World.

The Mavecure Hills

Guainia department, on the eastern border with Venezuela, is about as off-the-beaten-track as it gets in Colombian Amazon travel, but it is home to one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the country: the Mavecure Hills, or Cerros de Mavecure . These giant rocky hills are remnants of the Guiana Shield, some of the oldest rocks on the planets, and climbing them at dawn to watch the sun rise over the jungle is a magical experience.

Rafting in Caqueta

Caqueta department is a region that has suffered from a huge lack of tourism due to its dangerous reputation but, thankfully, this has changed a great deal and the region is opening up to tourism like never before. There are many great activities to enjoy around the departmental capital of Florencia, but white-water rafting on the Orteguaza River – while exploring the surrounding jungle for waterfalls and petroglyphs – is an amazing Amazonian experience.

Fin del Mundo Waterfall in Mocoa

Mocoa is another city on the frontier of the Andes and the Amazon, making it easily accessible for anyone who wants to experience some of Colombia’s jungle without having to take any flights. It’s a small city, surrounded by rivers and impressive waterfalls, but the most impressive of the lot are the Fin del Mundo waterfalls, a series of smaller waterfalls, culminating in a mighty 80 m cascade into the jungle below.

Birding in Mitu

Mitu is the capital of Vaupes department, which is possibly the least visited region of Colombia: you can only access Mitu by plane, and it has an isolated, cut-off vibe as a result. However, the birdwatching around Mitu is the stuff of legend among Colombian birders, and avian enthusiasts will be in jungle heaven attempting to spot species such as the Fiery Topaz, Brown-banded Puffbird, Imeri Warbling-Antbird, Pavonine Quetzal and the stunning Guianan cock-of-the-rock.

Swim with Pink Dolphins in Damas del Nare Lake

Pink River Dolphins are about the craziest, coolest animal you could hope to encounter on a trip to the Amazon, and at this isolated lake in Guaviare department you can swim with wild Pink Dolphins that have become remarkably relaxed around people (the local community on the edge of the lake even have names for them!). They will swim up and bump against your feet and even mess around and tug on the bow line of the boat! It’s a surreal, one-off experience that you’ll never forget.

On the way to Damas del Nare lake

The ‘other’ Cano Cristales

The famous red river of Cano Cristales in Meta department might not be the most visited spot in Colombia, but you could hardly accuse it of being unknown or off-the-beaten-track. However, just outside San Jose del Guaviare is another river with the same incredible red algae, making it like the little brother of Cano Cristales.

The Jirijirimo Rapids in Vaupes

These mighty rapids on the Apaporis River in the south of Vaupes department are often described as the greatest hidden wonder in the whole of Colombia, which is saying something. However, when you see photos and videos of the incredible, tumultuous spectacle, it’s hard to argue with that description. You’ll need to arrange a tour to visit Jirijirimo, but it might well end up being your fondest Colombian travel memory.

Araracuara – try saying it three times fast! – is an isolated village on the frontier of Caqueta and Amazonas departments, and is so isolated that it was once a prison for maximum security inmates (they didn’t even bother locking them up, such was the impossibility of escape). However, it is home to incredible biodiversity, the stunning Araracuara Canyon and rapids, and some of the most isolated communities in the Colombian Amazon. Many tours even combine a visit with a flight over the nearby Chiribiquete National Park.
