Major Hurricane Milton Set to Disrupt Florida Cruises. Here’s What to Know…
Update (10/8/24 @ 1:30 Central): Hurricane Milton continues its track toward Florida. Current windspeeds are 155 mph, down from 180 mph. At this point, the forecast continues to show a landfall near Tampa Bay, passing over Orlando and through Port Canaveral.
Several ports including Port Tampa Bay , Port Canaveral , Port Everglades , JAXPORT (Jacksonville), and PortMiami are either closed or will close soon .
The current track suggest a re-opening of ports on Friday at the earliest, however, your cruise line will have the most up-to-date information regarding specific cruises.
Original Article:
A major hurricane has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, with likely widespread impacts from the Yucatan Peninsula to the entire width of Florida.
Just a few days ago, what’s now Hurricane Milton was nothing more than a cluster of thunderstorms. It has rapidly intensified and as of the latest update, Milton had sustained winds of 155 miles per hour. That makes it a major Category 4 hurricane (157+ mph is the mark for Category 5) with the potential for massive property damage and life-threatening conditions for those in its path.
The current track has the storm moving east to brush the Yucatan Peninsula before turning northeast and heading to Florida. It’s projected landfall is centered on the Tampa area, but potentially stretches from Cedar Key to Fort Myers. Then the track shows the storm barreling across Florida through the Orlando area before racing off toward Bermuda.
There’s no doubt that Florida will be heavily impacted by Hurricane Milton, which in turn will have an impact on travel, including cruises. For instance, Tampa International Airport is already suspending operations starting Tuesday morning .
Depending on the storm’s track, it’s possible for any major cruise port in the state, from Jacksonville to Tampa to Port Canaveral to Port Everglades to feel the effects.
If there is any good news, the storm’s track brings it through Florida during Wednesday and Thursday. In the middle of the week there are fewer cruises scheduled to be in ports compared to the weekend.
Still, cruises are going to be impacted by Milton and in some cases already are. Here’s what to know…
The Cruises Most Likely Impacted By Hurricane Milton
Already we are seeing some adjustments to scheduled ports of call due to Milton.
For instance, Carnival has confirmed that Carnival Dream will depart a call on Key West “a bit earlier than planned” in order to stay clear of the storm. Carnival Pride has moved up a call on Bermuda in order to depart before the storm potentially arrives later this week.
However, given the storm’s distance from Florida at the moment it’s likely that more potential changes will be announced later in the week. Based on the current schedule and path, it’s possible the following trips could be impacted.
Port of Tampa Bay The Port of Tampa Bay has confirmed that its cruise schedule will be impacted by Helene. It posted the following statement on its website:
“The storm will impact our cruise schedule for Port Tampa Bay. If you have any questions about a specific sailing, we recommend you contact your cruise line directly as all changes to itineraries will be communicated by your cruise line.”
Below is the current schedule with any notes where applicable.
Tuesday, October 8 Margaritaville at Sea Islander: The departure date has moved to October 7 and the original Key West/Cozumel itinerary will be adjusted.
Thursday, October 10 Carnival Paradise: Carnival says passengers should not proceed to the cruise terminal until “you have received confirmation from us on operational plans for your cruise.” Passengers can sign up for text alerts by texting “CCL2” to “CRUISE” (278473).
Friday, October 11 Serenade of the Seas: Royal Caribbean’s Travel Updates webpage lists no changes as of now.
JAXPORT (Jacksonville) JAXPORT says that it is currently operational but that it is at condition X-RAY, meaning gale force winds are expected within 48 hours.
Thursday, October 10 Carnival Elation: Carnival says passengers should not proceed to the cruise terminal until “you have received confirmation from us on operational plans for your cruise.” Passengers can sign up for text alerts by texting “CCL1” to “CRUISE” (278473).
Port Canaveral Port Canaveral is under port condition X-RAY. According to its website, the port “remains open and conducting normal Port operations but anticipates limited waterside and vessel shoreside Port operations will follow as conditions change.”
At this time, we’ve heard of no changes to schedules, but the following departures are slated and could be impacted.
Thursday, October 10 MSC Seashore
Friday, October 11 Adventure of the Seas Utopia of the Seas Disney Wish Carnival Glory
Port Everglades Port Everglades is near the southern edge of the anticipated storm track, but is also in port condition X-RAY. At this time, we’ve heard of no changes to schedules, but the following departures are slated and could be impacted.
Wednesday, October 9 Sun Princess
Thursday, October 10 Viking Neptune
Friday, October 11 Celebrity Reflection
Cruise Lines Will Alert Passengers of Latest Updates
Hurricane Milton will no doubt have a major impact on Mexico and Florida given its size and strength.
If your cruise is impacted, then the cruise line will be in touch with the latest updates regarding any potential changes to the schedule . If flying into the port, be sure to factor in potential delays or cancellations of flights when trying to reach the area.

Everything Carnival passengers must know about Hurricane Milton
Updates at the bottom 10/8 4:01 p.m.
Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald usually starts his work day with a jovial post — unless that's not appropriate.
With Hurricane Milton looming across Florida and tens of thousands of the brand's passengers not knowing what might happen with their cruises, he took a different tone as he started work on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Related: Carnival Cruise Line passengers banned after a really dumb move
"There is only one place to start with today and that of course is Hurricane Milton," he wrote. "I know usually I start the day with a dollop of silliness but that seems futile as so many of you are worried about your homes, your family, and friends, and some of course, are concerned if their cruise will be as scheduled."
Heald promised to do everything he could to keep his followers up to date.
"Let me start by saying that we are going to keep you informed; that goes without saying," he said. "We will wait until the storm passes through or close to our home ports and wait on the Port Authorities and United States Coast Guard to say the port is open."
Safety will be behind all decisions.
"The Captains on all the ships that possibly may have some changes will be making constant announcements and letters will be delivered to every cabin," Heald said. "From the Mother Ship we have our Chief Communications Officer Chris and his team making sure you stay informed as I promise will I."
Heald also shared the latest report from Carnival's consulting meteorologist, Amy Sweezey.

Carnival's meteorologist shares latest info
Transcript:.
Hi everybody, this is meteorologist Amy Sweezey. Wanted to give you a quick update with Carnival Cruise Line and Hurricane Milton. First of all, for those of you who are in the state of Florida, like me, and you are in the path of the storm, please make sure that you're taking the necessary precautions. Safety, of course, is key for us at Carnival, and that is why Captains across the fleet are keeping in close contact with our FleetOperations Center in Miami, and they're making adjustments as needed based on the storm's path and forecast.
We will, of course, always stay a safe distance from any storm.
Now, already several ships and home ports have been notified and are being monitored very closely. It is possible that more itineraries could be adjusted. Given the projected path, Carnival Paradise was informed that it is likely to have a longer voyage than just the four days. That was when people embarked on the ship. They were told that information, and that's because in Tampa the port will likely be closed at some point, and Paradise is trying to get back to Tampa on Thursday.
Even after the storm passes, the thing is, the port can't just immediately reopen. There has to be an assessment. They have to look everything over. The Coast Guard does an assessment of the entire channel that feeds into the port, and so [is] trying to decide the timing and gauge the timing and know how long that's going to take.
It really just kind of depends on what happens. So all around the state, we are watching it very closely. That's why it's a very good idea for you to stay informed.
You can do that in a couple of ways. First of all, keep an eye on your email, opt into text alerts when you check in, or you can sign up for them on your phone. There is more specific information too on carnival.com. Just go to the website and go to the top. There's a banner that says Hurricane Milton updates. You can click on that and get very specific information for your cruise in the coming week.
Now I know this has been a very busy stretch. We of course are through the peak of the season, but we're just slowly heading down past the peak and into the end of the season, which happens on November 30. So know that the Carnival team is committed to keeping everyone safe on every voyage.

Carnival's Heald urges strength
"I know many of you on land and in the path of the storm are concerned and scared even. I know some are still reeling from Helene," he wrote. "[Please] let me know how you are doing now, how the weather is where you live, and let me know you are OK."
Carnival's full list of changes:

Carnival Updates Status of Ships Affected by Helene
- September 27, 2024
In a new statement shared on its website, Carnival Cruise Line updated the status of ships in its fleet that were affected by Hurricane Helene.
According to the company, eight vessels needed to change their itineraries due to the tropical storm, which formed in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week.
“Overnight, Hurricane Helene made landfall in northern Florida, and our Fleet Operations Center in Miami continues to actively monitor the situation,” Carnival said.
“As always, the safety of our guests and crew remains our priority and our ships are sailing a safe distance from unfavorable weather caused by the storm,” the cruise line added.
After having a visit to Cozumel canceled on Tuesday, the Carnival Paradise is set to return to its homeport in Tampa today.
“The ship is in position to sail back to Port Tampa Bay when clearance is received, once the port reopens and a post-storm assessment is completed,” the company said, noting that the vessel was initially set to return to Florida on Thursday.
Paradise’s upcoming cruise is delayed, Carnival added. Additional details about operational plans for the ship and options for the guests are set to be released soon.
“The Carnival Elation was not able to return to its homeport of Jacksonville on Thursday, September 26. The ship is in position to sail back to JAXPort when clearance is received, once the port reopens and a post-storm assessment is completed,” the company explained.
Originally a four-night cruise, Elation’s upcoming sailing will now operate as a three-night cruise to Freeport departing today.
The Carnival Glory was delayed by a several hours on its return to Port Canaveral, docking early afternoon on Friday.
Operating short cruises, the Carnival Sunrise arrived at PortMiami as scheduled Thursday but remained docked until weather conditions improved early Friday.
The delay is not expected to affect the itinerary of the vessel’s upcoming cruise, Carnival said, with a visit to Half Moon Cay on Saturday set to take place as planned.
Other four ships, the Carnival Freedom, the Carnival Valor, the Carnival Breeze and the Carnival Horizon, made minor changes to their itineraries, canceling or replacing ports of call in the Western Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Hurricane Helene forces CCL-Carnival to reroute multiple cruise ships
As Hurricane Helene approaches the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, several cruise lines have announced itinerary adjustments in response to the storm’s potential impact.
CCL-Carnival Cruise Line has modified the schedules of 5 vessels, according to a recent update.
Affected CCL ships include Carnival Paradise , Carnival Valor , Carnival Breeze , and Carnival Horizon , all of which canceled planned calls at Cozumel . Additionally, Carnival Horizon canceled a visit to Grand Cayman .
To accommodate these changes, Carnival Paradise was rerouted to Costa Maya (Tuesday, September 24th), while Carnival Horizon will visit Amber Cove Dominicana (Thursday, September 26th).
Carnival Valor, with no alternative port options, returns to Port NOLA New Orleans .
Helene's approach may also impact USA port schedules.
Carnival Paradise is slated to dock in Tampa Bay Florida , and Carnival Elation is scheduled for Jacksonville FL , though their returns could be delayed by the storm’s path.
On Florida’s Atlantic coast, Port Canaveral remains operational, but the US Coast Guard has set Port Condition "X-RAY" as a precaution, indicating normal operations with the expectation of future updates as Helene nears.
Hurricane Helene is forecast to make landfall in Florida late Thursday.
Here’s what Carnival Cruise Lines just said about Hurricane Helene
T ropical Storm Helene is strengthening rapidly in the Caribbean Sea and may even reach hurricane status by the time you’re reading this. While it’s too early to know the precise path of the storm, the latest models have it slamming into the Florida panhandle as a major hurricane Thursday evening.
Not surprisingly, many passengers booked on cruise ships departing from ports such as Tampa and Mobile, Alabama are concerned about what this storm could mean for their travel plans (and their safety).

Carnival shares an update
Carnival brand ambassador John Heald shared an update video from the cruise line’s meteorologist Amy Sweezey on Tuesday afternoon.
For one thing, some itineraries have already been adjusted due to the storm, with several ships cancelling planned stops in Cozumel. Sweezey also shares that there are five specific ships that are being monitored for impacts to their itineraries, including:
- Carnival Horizon
- Carnival Breeze
- Carnival Valor
- Carnival Paradise
- Carnival Elation
The company will also be monitoring for any port closures and noted that impacts could include sailings already at sea, as well as planned departures later in the week. Currently, only the ports of Tampa and Jacksonville are within the storm’s cone (potential path).
A fluid situation
The bottom line is that Carnival simply doesn’t know a whole lot yet, other than there is likely to be some disruptions related to the storm. Safety is Carnival (and any other cruise line’s) first priority, and it’s important to know that Carnival, as well as any affected ports, will err on the side of caution when it comes to keeping guests safe.
Sweezey advised travelers who are expected to sail later this week to be sure to check emails, and to opt in to receive text alerts on the line’s online check-in platform. Customers scheduled to sail on the Sep. 26 sailings of the Carnival Elation or Carnival Paradise in particular can text the codes CCL1 (Elation) or CCL2 (Paradise) to CRUISE (278473) to sign up for text alerts for updates involving their trips.
Carnival Cruise Hurricane Update Issued by Fleet Operations Center
Doug Parker
- August 30, 2023
A Carnival cruise hurricane update has been issued by the company’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami, Florida. With Hurricane Idalia impacting the region and ports where many ships are sailing, Carnival updates guests with upcoming sailings.
The hurricane update on brand ambassador John Heald’s Facebook page includes details on itinerary adjustments, homeport operations, and when the guests can expect to hear about their upcoming cruises.
Carnival Cruise Hurricane Update by Homeport
Hurricane Idalia has caused disruptions to multiple cruises and is impacting four of Carnival Cruise Line’s homeports: Port Tampa Bay, Port Canaveral, Jaxport, and Port of Charleston. PortMiami is operating normally and is not impacted by the latest update.
The cruise operator is closely monitoring the situation and will continue providing updates as necessary through text messages, social media, and their website.

Sailings From Port Tampa Bay
Port Tampa Bay remains closed to all marine traffic due to Hurricane Idalia’s large wind field, which continues to affect weather conditions in the area.
However, the Carnival Paradise is sailing a five-night Bahamas itinerary and is at sea on Wednesday, August 30, returning to Tampa as planned and a safe distance from the storm.
An updated text from Carnival said the port is still closed and, “We hope to be able to dock Thursday, although there is a possibility it may be Friday morning. We will be in touch by 10:00 AM tomorrow. We know this impacts your plans and thank you for your patience and understanding.”
As for the next sailing, a four-night Western Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, guests are advised not to go to the terminal until the schedule is confirmed, which should happen shortly after the port reopens.
Sailings From Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral is closed , with Port Condition Zulu in effect, impacting three Carnival ships: Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, and Mardi Gras.
Carnival Liberty is on a four-night Bahamas cruise, while Carnival Freedom is on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise.
Both ships are scheduled to return to Port Canaveral on Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2, respectively, with no schedule changes. Mardi Gras is also expected to arrive in Port Canaveral on Saturday morning.
Sailings From Jacksonville
JAXPORT is closed , with port condition Zulu. However, it is expected to reopen on Thursday, August 31, pending safety inspections and reopening authorization.
Only one Carnival ship, the Carnival Elation, is sailing from Jacksonville on a five-night cruise to the Bahamas.
A text from Carnival was sent at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, “The Port of Jacksonville is closed to marine traffic, and officials will conduct a post-storm assessment tomorrow morning.”
It said, “We will not have a projected arrival time until after the assessment is completed. We hope to be able to dock Thursday, although there is a possibility it may be Friday morning. We will be in touch by 10:00 AM tomorrow. We know this impacts your plans and thank you for your patience and understanding.”
Guests booked on the next sailing are advised to wait for confirmation from Carnival Cruise Line before proceeding to the cruise terminal on Thursday in case of unexpected delays.
Sailings From Charleston
Port of Charleston is closed due to Port Condition Zulu.
Carnival Sunshine is on a five-night Bahamas sailing that left Charleston on Monday, August 28. The ship follows its planned itinerary, which is well out of the storm’s path. It is expected to return to Charleston on Saturday, September 2.
There are no plans to change the September 2, 2023, departure for Carnival Sunshine, another five-night Bahamas cruise visiting Nassau and Half Moon Cay.
Carnival’s brand ambassador will post any cruise-related hurricane updates on his Facebook page.

Carnival Cruise Line Gives New Update on Visits to Cozumel Due to Hurricane Beryl
The captain of a Carnival cruise ship sent a message to the guests on board regarding the vessel’s planned visit to Cozumel on Saturday.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula just north of Tulum earlier today and the storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. All cruise ports in the region are closed today.
Carnival Cruise Line has been monitoring the storm from their Fleet Operations Center and has been altering itineraries throughout the week to keep guests and crew members safe.
Carnival Valor departed from New Orleans yesterday on a four day cruise with one stop in Cozumel on Saturday.
Carnival Valor’s Captain Mazzi sent the following message to guests on the cruise ship regarding their planned visit to Cozumel:
“Hurricane Beryl continues its westerly path across the Caribbean and is set to impact the Yucatan Peninsula in the next few days, passing south of Cozumel, Friday afternoon. The weather looks promising for Saturday, but local authorities must conduct an assessment after the storm passes Cozumel. They will keep us updated about port conditions.”
“For now, we’re heading to Cozumel, as planned, remaining a safe distance from the storm. We will provide timely updates as we sail.”
“Safety is our priority, and we will remain a good distance from the storm.”
Carnival Cruise Line previously made the following changes to itineraries due to Hurricane Beryl:
- Carnival Paradise will visit Nassau, The Bahamas on Saturday, July 6 instead of visiting Cozumel, Mexico
- Carnival Breeze did not visit Progresso, Mexico as scheduled on July 4, 2024

- Carnival Liberty visited Cozumel on Tuesday, July 2 instead of Friday, July 5
Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald has been issuing updates on behalf of the cruise line on his Facebook page.
