Best Restaurants in Udaipur with amazing Views:
Udaipur has many rooftop restaurants around Lake Pichola offering splendid views of the lake. Here are some of the best places to dine at, serving good food and even better panoramic views.
Rainbow Restaurant:
Rainbow Restaurant is a great place for a sundowner. Grab a Pizza and a brew while enjoying the beautiful sunset over the banks of Lake Pichola overlooking the Aravalli mountains. The restaurant’s quirky decor, cute cushion mattress tables, candlelight set up and amazing playlist liven up the place. We loved the Margherita Pizza, Chicken Lasagne and Café Mocha here.
#LipSmackingMeter: 5/5
Address: by the banks of Lal Ghat, next to Jaiwana Haveli
Jagat Niwas Rooftop Restaurant:
Housed in Jagat Niwas Haveli, the plush whitewashed restaurant feels no less than a palace. The picturesque view from the beautiful arched windows is like no other.
Pick a window table in this nautical black-and-white dining area and you can enjoy a sweeping view of Lake Pichola. The menu ranges from traditional Indian to modern cuisine. Bharwa Aaloo kebabs and Yakhni Pulao is a must try. The pricing may feel a bit steep, but the good food, attentive service and breath-taking view warrants an amazing experience here.
#LipSmacking Meter: 4.5/5
Address: Jagat Niwas Haveli, Lal Ghat
Café Ambrai:
It’s hard to beat the lake view from this Eurpoean-esque cafe. The in-house café of Amet Haveli, Café Ambrai offers an envious view of the magnificent Taj Lake Palace, Gangaur Ghat and City Palace over the lake. The cafe features an array of Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisines. The views early in the morning are just as beautiful at sunset. The service is a tad slow but the view makes up for it and while you wait for the food, strike a pose or two 😊We visited for breakfast on 2 separate occasions and preferred the English Breakfast Platter & Aaloo Paratha.
#LipSmackingMeter: 4/5
Address: Amet Haveli, Outside Chandpole
Jheel Café:
Divided into two sections, ground and top floor, Jheel Café is popular among tourists and locals. Situated right next to the lake, grab an outdoor table on a clear day. The rooftop section is quite pretty too. Weekends may have waiting, so a reservation is recommended. We visited early in the morning and had the entire outdoor section to ourselves. The café ticks all the right boxes with regards to the lake view, the coffee and the desserts but came up short on the food/ snacks which can afford a skip. The Nutella Hot Chocolate & walnut brownie here is heaven😊
#LipSmackingMeter: 3.5/5
Address: 52, 56, Top Floor, Gangaur Ghat, Near Bagore Ki Haveli, Udaipur , Chandpole
Upre Restaurant:
Upre meaning “upstairs” in Mewari is one of the most popular rooftop restaurants in Udaipur offering expansive views of Gangaur Ghat and Bagore ki Haveli. When the sun goes down, the city lights glowing from afar make Upre the perfect place to cozy up for a date night. Among Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisines, the menu also includes a variety of authentic Rajasthani dishes. A visit here can be a worthy splurge. Do try Laal Maas and Chicken Malai Kebab. Fish and chips were plain ordinary. If you are planning for a candlelight dinner with your loved one, I’d recommend to book a table well in advance. Reservations strongly recommended.
Address: Hotel Lake Pichola, Outside ChandPole.
Sun & Moon Café:
Sun & Moon Café claims to be the highest rooftop restaurant in Udaipur. During the day, this restaurant transforms itself into a pinterest-y café of Greece with walls splashed in white with a pop of orange and turquoise. The bright and colourful lights from the lakeside hotels gleaming over the waters of the lake at night offer a serene view especially if you are enjoying a glass of wine over at the terrace. The Food is nothing to write home about. Visit this place for a drink or two while you witness the city lights go on when the sun goes down.
Address: Rooftop of Banjara Hostel / Treebo Udai Niwas, near Jagdish Temple Road.
Shamiana at Hotel Sarovar:
The view is as good as Upre with a little less fancy ambience. The food is worth the praises; Laal Maas, Butter Naan, Mutton Pulao are some of the dishes we loved. Shamiana is housed on the roof of Hotel Sarovar which offers some of the best lake facing rooms at a bargain.
#LipSmackingMeter: 4.5/5
Address: Rooftop of Hotel Sarovar, Next to GoStops Hostel,
Jaiwana Haveli:
Many hotels claim to offer the best lake view rooftop restaurants but one that fits the bill is Jaiwana Haveli. Breathtaking views can be enjoyed from the interiors of this hotel through its floor-to-ceiling windows, or from the outdoor patio. The checked flooring, the metal chairs and the unobstructed views of the Lake Palace sets up a perfect dine with a view vibe. Try Indian Thali that is generously filled with veg curries, dal, rice, chapati, salad and a sweet dish.
Address: 5th Floor, Jaiwana Haveli, near Lal Ghat
Tribute Restaurant:
Want a place with a view but away from the bustling area of Lake Pichola? Head to Tribute, a restaurant facing Swaroop Lake. The restaurant is a tribute to Chetak, the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap. Visit this pretty restaurant in the evening and grab a table at their huge outdoor patio. The menu consists of North Indian, Continental, and the ethnic curries of Rajasthan. Must Try: Laal Maas and Mutton Pulao.
Address: Ambamata Temple Rd, Behind Monika Complex
Restaurants with Great Food but NO View:
If good food is what matters then these restaurants should be on your must-visit list:
Natraj Dining & Hall Restaurant:
Any Trip to Udaipur is incomplete without a visit to this iconic Thali restaurant. Natraj Dining has been serving Indian thali for years without compromising on taste & quality. The Unlimited Thali is worth the calories that it comes with. The rotational basis menu ensures that each time you visit, you are treated to a different variety of mouth-watering dishes. If you happen to visit during the summers, you’ll love the Aam Ras they serve. Priced at Rs 350++ this is definitely our favorite Thali Restaurant in Udaipur. Due to its over popularity, the place is always crowded, expect a delay in services.
Address: Near Udaipur Railway station, Jawahar Nagar
Neelam Restaurant:
Dining at restaurants is not unusual while travelling, but finding homemade food is a challenge. Neelam Restaurant is an humble abode run by a couple, where the wife prepares delicious food and the husband serves it with a warm smile. On our visit, we dined here twice, its that good. Must-Try: Masala Kadhi Chawal and Bhendi Masala.
Address: Jagdish Temple Road, Opp Treebo Udai Niwas
Chappan Bhog :
Another restaurant that we would like to highlight is Chappan Bhog. Recommended by our auto driver, this restaurant serves Dal Batti Thali and Rajasthani Thali, consisting of Dal Batti Churma, Ker Sangri, Gatte ki Sabki, Pulao and more Mewari goodness. They also serve Gujrati and Punjabi thali.

Address: Near Saheliyon ki Bari, Big Bazaar Road, Fatehpura
Royal Repast:
Royal Repast is an 85 year old ancestral home turned restaurant run by the Bedla Family. Known for serving cuisines only by appointment to famed personalities such as Queen Elizabeth & Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru among others, it has now opened its doors to all food lovers recently.
Serving traditional Mewar Styled food comprising of inhouse authentic recipes, the delicacies served here simply astonishing. From mouth-watering Kebabs, sumptuous Mains to comforting desserts, everything here is served with so much love. Gajar ka Halwa on a sultry winter evening was the perfect final touch to our royal meal. They also offer private dining, candlelight dinner and hosts corporate parties too.
Address: Police Station, Chota Chetak Road OPP SBI Bank near Hathipole, Udaipur,
Cafés to visit in Udaipur:
Udai Art Café:
This hip café, initially run by a Greek Women Meropi Mitrou, serves some excellent Greek and Vegan dishes. Located at the corner of Jagdish Temple Chowk, Udai Art Café has those perfect hippie vibes with colorful art splashed walls. They serve some amazing Coffee, Chocolate Crepe and hummus.
LipSmackingMeter: 4.5/5
Address: Near Jagdish Temple, Chandpole
Café Grasswood:
Watch the commotion of the old city pass by from their outdoor section or simply sit indoors, grab a book and relax.
From freshly squeezed juices to coffee & sandwiches, quick vegan and healthy options are scribbled on their chalked menu across the wall. Olive & Cheese Sandwich and Iced Coffee made for good munchies while we lost ourselves in the good conversation here. They also have wifi available making it easier for travellers to perch for hours, working from this colourful café.
Address: near Foot Over Bridge, Chand Pole,
Café Satori:
The “No strings attached” blackboard on a broken guitar in the street caught my attention. This street side café is always buzzing with tourists and coffee lovers. The outdoor seating is usually packed but regularly interrupted by the loud honkin from the street. The indoor section on the other hand is more peaceful & rather beautiful. The low sofa seating, walls adorned with portraits and quirky quotes and interesting books can keep anyone indoors for hours. The coffee is good and the food is average at best. But, I think the most fascinating concept of this café is “Suspended Coffee”, a tradition borrowed from Naples, Italy.
Suspended Coffee involves a customer buying a cup of coffee for the needy who can’t afford one themselves.
At Satori, For any suspended order, the customer only has to pay 70% of the offered price, the remaining 30% is offered by the cafe.

Street Food places in Udaipur:
Paliwal Restaurant:
How can the Udaipur food guide be complete without mentioning Kachori? Pyaaz, Moong Dal or simple Masala Kachori, pick any and you’ll end up raving about Kachoris at Paliwal Restaurant. Opens as early as 7 in the morning, the bylanes of Jagdish Temple Road are filled with the waft of piping hot kachoris made here. Priced at Rs 10, Kachoris here are a must try. Also try Mirchi ke Pakode and Samosa.
LipSmackingMeter: 5/5
Address: Jagdish Temple Rd, Old City
JMB Jagdish Mishtan Bhandar:
This is one of the oldest places serving Kachori in Udaipur. Kachoris here are served hot with a side of self-serving options of Kadhi and Sweet and Spicy chutneys. Priced at Rs 15 for a Kachori, its mouthful and bursting with flavors.
Address: Bapu Bazar Road, Jawahar Nagar,
Khaugalli at Gulab Baugh:
Just like any other city, Udaipur has its very own Khaughalli popular for all the quick grub offerings. Try the generously filled Aaloo Paratha at SaiBaba Nashta Centre or the lip-smacking Boiled egg Bhurji at an unnamed stall near Chetak Circle. During evenings this place is buzzing with food lovers; a must-visit if you love street food.
Address: Behind Museum Road, Gulab Baugh
Foodstalls at Fateh Sagar Lake:
Fateh Sagar is a beautiful lake in Udaipur and draws in many tourists throughout the day. The lake is dotted with numerous food stalls serving quick bites, refreshments and beverages. Kulhad Chai and Coffee at Vinod Fast Food are popular here and these warm beverages are great especially when there is a nip in the air.
Address: Opp Fateh Sagar Lake
Important Tips for places to eat in Udaipur:
Most of the restaurants are on rooftops of 3-5 floors Hotels with no lifts, so be prepared to climb a few flights of stairs.
Not all seats in the restaurants with views are near windows. If you’re going for the view, ask for a reservation near a window or walk-in before the sunset to get yourself a nice table. There might be waiting during the weekends, please secure a table with reservations.
All the restaurants were visited on my own during my last two trips to Udaipur and as such all the above opinions are based on my own experiences.
Until then,

14 Foods to Try in Udaipur
Manu Bahuguna / Getty Images
Rajasthani cuisine is predominantly vegetarian and heavy on the use of pulses and hardy grains, such as millet, due to the state's arid desert climate. However, in Udaipur, the cuisine has been influenced by the Rajput rulers of the Mewar region, who founded the city. They were keen hunters, so game meat predominated in their diet. The royal cooks used plenty of ghee (clarified butter), yogurt, chilies, and garlic to flavor the meat and match it to the tastes of the powerful warrior kings. In addition, the climate of the Mewar region is less-parched than other parts of Rajasthan . Thus, the cuisine also includes freshwater fish from the region's lakes and corn that flourishes in the region's richer soil. Here are the top foods you should try while in Udaipur.
Dal Bati Churma

Rajasthan's most iconic dish consists of three items: daal, a soup-like mixed lentil dish; baati, balls of bread made out of wholemeal wheat or jowar flour; and churma, baati crushed into a coarse powder, and fried in ghee and jaggery (a type of cane sugar). Dal Bati Churma is a fixture at festivals and other celebrations including weddings.
The vegetarian thali (platter) at Krishna Dal Baati Restro is centered around this dish and Santosh Dal Bati restaurant is another famous place to try it.
Gatte ki Sabji (Gatta Curry)

Steamed chickpea flour dumplings are cooked in a tangy, spicy yogurt-based curry to make this ubiquitous Rajasthani dish. "Gatta" refers to the solid dumpling pieces in the curry. The Mewari style, prevalent in Udaipur, has tomato and onion added to the gravy. Pair it with Makki ki Roti (corn flour flatbread).
Hari Ghar and Khamma Ghani restaurants both do excellent versions of the dish.
Kadhi Pakora

You might be familiar with pakoras as a popular street food in India. They're also added to curry in Rajasthan, albeit without the fillings such as potato and onion. Small portions of chickpea flour batter are deep-fried until golden br, and then placed in a thick gravy of yogurt, chickpea flour, and spices.
Kadhi Pakora appears on menus all over Udaipur though diners praise the dish at Tribute restaurant, overlooking Fateh Sagar Lake. Or, if you'd prefer a rooftop view of Lake Pichola, head to the restaurant at Jaiwana Haveli .
Banjara Murgh (Nomadic Chicken Curry)
Banjara Murgh is a chicken curry prepared with coarsely pounded spices and slow-cooked over a fire, as was done by the region's nomadic people. The Banjara Murgh at Royal Repast is recommended by the chef. This restaurant specializes in the traditional Mewari style of cooking and is located in the owner's ancestral home. The owner's grandfather was Prime Minister of Mewar state, and his mother learned many recipes from the expert royal cooks.

Ker Sangri is a rather unusual dish comprised of pickled wild indigenous berries and beans. The ker berries come from a thorny leafless shrub and resemble capers, while the long stringy sangri beans are pods from Rajasthan's state tree, the khejri tree. Both grow in the Thar desert. The berries and beans are picked and dried, to be used when seasonal vegetables are scarce.
The dish is a specialty at Hari Garh restaurant , alongside Lake Pichola.
Laal Maas (Red Mutton Curry)

Carnivores who love their food hot and spicy will definitely want to sample the formidable signature dish of Mewari rulers: Laal Maas. It is a fiery crimson mutton (usually goat not lamb) curry loaded with pungent red Mathania chillies and ghee.
Enjoy it in style with a signature Udaipur view across Lake Pichola to the City Palace at Upre or Ambrai restaurants. Or, if you'd rather somewhere less fancy head to Rajwada Bites . But be warned: this dish burns!
Machli Jaisamandi (Fish Curry)
Unique to Udaipur, Machli Jaisamandi gets its name from nearby Lake Jaisamand. Mewar ruler Jai Singh created the lake in the 17th century and it's among the largest artificial lakes in the world. The dish is a light, tomato-based freshwater fish curry, and one of the tribes in the area is thought to have served the dish to the ruler.
You'll find it on the menu at Paantya , as well as Upre and 1559 A.D.
Safed Maas (White Mutton Curry)
While the royal men feasted on Laal Mass, a much more mellow Safed Maas was served to the ladies. The mutton in this dish is cooked in a creamy white yogurt and cashew nut gravy, lightly spiced with cardamom.
Dine on it in a regal setting at Paantya , the restaurant at Shiv Niwas Palace hotel inside the Udaipur City Palace Complex . Many authentic Mewari dishes are available there. Safed Maas is a chef's special at Tribute restaurant as well.
Boiled Egg Bhurji

For a fuss-free snack, grab yourself some piping hot boiled egg bhurji from The Egg World at Chetak Circle in Udaipur. Owner Jai Kumar gives a twist to the popular Indian take on scrambled eggs, flavoring it up with his special blend of sugarless ketchup, spices, onion, and tomato. Jai's inventive egg recipes have taken him all the way to be a contestant on "MasterChef India."
Mirchi Bada

Biting into a crispy mirchi bada will definitely wake your taste buds up! This famed Rajasthani street food features large green chillies stuffed with spices and potato, and deep fried in chickpea flour batter.
Manak Balaji's Mirchi Bada Center, opposite Jyoti Secondary School, has been in business since 1967. It's open from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m, and the lines can get long. Jagdish Misthan Bhandar (JMB) in Surajpole is a more central and convenient option.
Khargosh ke Kebab (Rabbit Kebab)
Mewar rulers considered wild rabbit to be a delicacy and these days, it's only offered at a few restaurants in Udaipur. The minced rabbit kebabs at Royal Repast are prepared according to an old family recipe, with freshly ground whole spices, and shaped like a shami kebab (resembling a flattened meatball). Upre also serves minced rabbit cooked in spices (Khargosh ka Keema).
Come 7 a.m. and a crowd is already eagerly awaiting fresh kachori (deep-fried pastry discs stuffed with fillings such as spiced lentils or onion) at Paliwal Misthaan restaurant near the Jagdish Temple in Udaipur. In case they're sold out, try Jagdish Shri Restaurant close by. Other renowned alternatives are Shri Lala Kachori near Asthal Mandir, or one of the branches of JMB (JMB Nashta Center near Chetak Circle makes many different types of kachori).

Traditional Rajasthani malpua may be the sweetest pancakes you've ever had. They're fried and then dunked in sugar syrup. The use of coarsely ground wheat flour (atta) in Udaipur gives them a crispier texture. Many local roadside sweet shops around the City Palace sell malpua. For a more hygienic environment, visit Jodhpur Misthan Bhandar sweet shop at Bapu Bazar, opposite the Town Hall.
Regarded as the king of sweets in Rajasthan, ghevar is a super-indulgent cake-like dish that will alarm your arteries. It's soaked in sugar syrup and ghee, and sometimes topped with nutty rabri (thickened sweetened milk). Ghevar is commonly made during religious festivals such as Teej and Gangaur in Udaipur, as it's offered to the deities before being distributed.
You can get ghevar throughout the year at major sweet shops such as Jodhpur Misthan Bhandar and Jagdish Misthan Bhandar.

What to eat in Udaipur – 15 best local foods
If you’re travelling to Udaipur, what could be more rewarding than dipping your fingers into its local cuisine? No doubt, local foods of Rajasthan such as Dal Bati Churma, Gatte ki Sabji, Egg Bhurji, Kulhad Coffee are the best foods to eat in Udaipur. The city also features many delectable street eateries. So, I have compiled a list consisting of 15 local Rajasthani foods, including snacks, cool drinks, hot beverages that you must try in Udaipur. Take a look at my list and make a point to taste them on your next solo trip.
1. Dal Bati Churma
Dal Bati Churma reserves first place in must-try local foods of Udaipur. What is Dal Bati Churma? Let me break it to you. Dal is ghee, and Bati is a tandoor-baked flaky spherical wheat dough. Churma is a mixture of Bati with sweet water. Dal Bati Churma is the Bati dipped in Churma, spread with ghee. It is served with papad, salad, capsicum fry, mint chutney, chilli garlic chutney, and potato curry, making it the Rajasthani Thali. Your solo trip to Udaipur is incomplete without having this traditional food of Udaipur.
2. Gatte ki Sabji
The next most popular food of Rajasthani cuisine is Gatte Ki Sabji. Gatte, as it is called, is prepared from gram flour then dipped into the curry. People eat this dish with buttered chapatis, bread, and rice. Most of the time, it is included in the Rajasthani Cuisine. That is at least what I saw on the Rajasthani Thali I ate in Santosh Bhojnalaya restaurant.
Buttermilk is a classic yoghurt-based drink in Indian cuisine. It is known by the regional name Lassi. The mixture of yoghurt, water, spices, and sometimes fruit constitutes Lassi. There are salty Lassi, sweet Lassi, and milkshake Lassi. Lassi is a friendly drink for travellers as it helps them cope with the summers in Udaipur .
Jalebi is an irresistible sweet dish to try in Udaipur. This delicious dessert is deep-fried in ghee and then drizzled with sugar syrup—a treat for sweet lovers in Udaipur.
5. Ice Cola
Next on the list is Ice Cola, a popular icy local food in Udaipur. Ice Colas are similar to ice creams, but they are 100% made of ice flavoured in vibrant colours. More than the taste, their beauty is their colourful appearance. The first time I tasted Ice Cola was on my way to the City Palace and Bagore Ki Haveli museums in Udaipur . The vibrant combination of colours got my attention. So, I bought one. Needless to say, it spoiled my dress too!
If you enjoy sweets and ice cream, you must try Falooda while visiting Udaipur. Falooda is a cold dessert made with noodles in Mughlai, India. In Rajasthani cuisine, this Mughal-inspired delicacy is a popular treat. Rose syrup, vermicelli, and sweet basil seeds are combined with milk and ice cream to make this dessert.
7. Masala Chai
Next is my favourite drink in Udaipur, Masala Chai (Masala Tea). Well, Masala Chai is not a particularly exciting drink. It is a common beverage found in Indian households. Believe me, the one in Udaipur’s Bombay Bazar that I found while exploring Udaipur at night is rightly and richly flavoured!
8. Hari Mirch Chai
The next beverage on the list is Hari Mirch Chai. Hari Mirch Chai translates into Green Chilli Tea. This Rajasthani drink is hot and spicy, with a hint of ginger. It is a delightful medicine for solo travellers who feel jetlagged or have headaches after a long day of travel.
9. Kulhad coffee
Another must-try drink in Udaipur is Kulhad Coffee. Kulhad Coffee’s wonderful flavour comes in the fairly mixed coffee powder sprinkled just before serving. The drink served in tiny, attractive earthly pots called Kulhads adds to its popularity. That said, it is popular among travellers in Udaipur , gaining the title of “Indian Dalgona Coffee.” For coffee addicts, it is a true delicacy!
10. Mini Mirchi Vada
Now that we’ve seen a handful of Udaipur’s delicious traditional drinks. It’s time to taste the spicy delicacies of Rajasthani cuisine. Mini Mirchi Vada is a spicy Rajasthani snack with cauliflower or potatoes filled inside. It goes well with either tomato sauce or mint and tamarind chutney. I like the second combination, though.
11. Bread Pakora
Bread Pakora is a common snack of the Indian cuisine, usually had along with evening tea in the Indian household. As the name implies, it is made of bread. The bread is fried deeply and then served with tomato sauce. You can easily find this eatery in small food stalls in Udaipur.
A samosa is a fried pastry with a savoury filling, including ingredients such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, chicken, or other meats. It may take different forms, including triangle, cone, or half-moon shapes. As far as my exploration in Udaipur, I noticed triangular-shaped samosa only.
13. Egg Bhurji
Egg Bhurji, a spicy Rajasthani snack, is also eaten by locals for breakfast and dinner. It comes in a few types-scrambled Egg Bhurji, boiled Egg Bhurji, Paneer Egg Bhurji, Chicken Egg Bhurji, etc. It is famous in Udaipur’s Chetak Circle. If you like Egg Bhurji, you can wrap your food expense in Udaipur for cheap.
14. Pav Bhaji
Pav Bhaji is a famous local food of Rajasthan. You can call it a desi sandwich stuffed with thick vegetable curry. The best part is the mint chutney and onion salad that comes along with it. Pav Bhaji and Dahi Kachori are my favourite snacks of Udaipur.
15. Dahi Kachori
Dahi Kachori? How did I miss this delicious local snack of Rajasthan? So, my favourite snack Dahi Kachori is everything your taste buds want. It is spicy, saucy, curdy, sweet, and sour. It is made from gram dough stuffed with potato masala and made to float in the pool of curd. Yummy!
Local foods hub in Udaipur
I can see after reading the list you are already drooling for Udaipur’s local foods. Now, where do you go to experience them? Except for Dal Bati Churma and Gatte ki Sabji, you can have the best of all the street delicacies in Chetak circle, Bombay Bazar , Hiranmagri food street, and Lake Pichola road kiosks in Udaipur. Similarly, to relish the authentic flavour of Dal Bati Churma and Gatte ki Sabji, visit the local restaurants in Udaipur .

6 Must Visit Eateries in Udaipur
Restaurant Ambrai
1. Ambrai: (Best for:Dinner)Located on Lake Pichola, Ambrai Udaipur probably has the most breathtaking view you would ever experience in your life. The menu has both Indian and International cuisines to offer but if you are a stickler as far as “genuineness” of the dish goes, my suggestion would be to try their Indian or more specifically their Mewari Menu. Khichdi, Govind gatte ki sabzi are some of the must trys. Just looking at the brightly lit lake and sipping on a glass of wine (again the menu is anything but elaborate there but it’s the thought that counts-isn’t it?) is an unforgettable experience in itself. It’s better to call them ahead and reserve a lakeside table because they are always busy. Dinner bill for two with drinks Rs.1000-1500/-P.S.: We normally carry only our phones to Udaipur so our pics may not do justice to the words on this blog. I have tried to pick up pictures from the internet and even though they are not the best, you still may get a fair idea about the places. So must check out Ambrai restaurant Udaipur during your next Udiapur trip.
2. 1559 A.D. : (Best for: Lunch)1559 AD Udaipur surprisingly is the only indoor place on my list. Ideal for lunches or desserts. It’s located inside a 16th century decor bungalow and the ambience is beyond description. Again won’t rate it very high on non-Indian food but their Indian non-veg dishes are a must try. The interiors are minimal but very tasteful.Bill for two- Rs.800-1000
3. Upre : (Best for:Dinner)Upre literally means “up” or “upstairs” in Mewari. Located on the terrace of Hotel Lake Pichola, Upre Uudaipur gives you an amazing overhead view of the lake. You can see the beautiful calm lake, the brightly lit City Palace and listen to some live music (the mewari kind with dholak and shehnai). The individual tables are done up royally like tents and gives you a nice and romantic feel. The mewari food served here is to die for! Definitely try the Mewari egg curry or kadhi pakoda. If you are in the mood for some “Indian Chinese”, this is your place!Bill for two: less than Rs. 1000/-
Palki Khana
4. Palki Khana : (Best for: Snacks & Drinks)Situated inside the City Palace, Palki Khana is the best place to unwind after your long walks inside the Palace and the museum. With the lake on one side and the beautiful facade of the City Palace on the other, it offers an amazing view. In case you would just like to relax with a book and a bottle of wine…I cannot think of a better place to go to. What’s more-the beautiful Anokhi store right next to the cafe! It has the most amazing jewelry & apparel collection!Bill for two: (drinks and snacks) Rs. 1000-1500/-
Savage Garden Restaurant
5. Savage Garden : (Best for: Lunch)Savage Garden Udaipur is situated in a Godforsaken lane and you may want to ditch your car for an autorickshaw to get there scratch-free. This sent us off to Venice instantly-the same meandering narrow lanes to get to your favorite eateries. It’s completely safe otherwise! Run by a German couple who fell in love with Udaipur- SG is the one place in Udaipur where you can get authentic “videshi food” for desi prices. It’s a charming little cafe with idyllic interiors. Must trys include their home made gnocchi and pastas. Also give their desserts a go. Their liquor license is awaiting renewal but don’t miss their awesome coffee! You may want to give them a call before you turn up unannounced as they are sometimes closed without notice.Bill for two: Rs.1000-1200/-
The Oberoi Udaivilas
6. Chandni Restaurant at Oberoi Udai Vilas Palace : (Best for: Dinner)It’s by the lake and the view is mesmerizing! Live music and dance (mewari and kalbeliya), an awesome selection of wines, staff that treats you like the Queen and an absolutely amazing ambience! Also, did I mention its a gastronomical delight! So, when you want to take your better half on that amazing date or celebrate something special with a friend-this is the PLACE!It may be very difficult to get a table if you are not staying there but it’s definitely worth trying and pulling a few strings for, if you can.Dinner for two- Rs. 3000-5000/- (depending on how much you end up drinking).

There are two faces of Udaipur , two seasons, two characters. If you visit Udaipur between April and October its a thoroughly laid back Indian town where you can relax, shop, eat all at your own pace. Thanks to the amazing off season offers by the three stalwarts of luxury (Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Udai Vilas and Leela Palace Kempinski) you can even have a royal holiday on a reasonable budget.
Udaipur in peak season (November to March) turns into a small European city. You see foreigners everywhere you look, almost all places are crowded and staying in a small-ish Haveli is fun too. Both seasons have there own charm and if you were to ask me I wouldn’t be able to suggest which one is a better time to visit but depending on whether you want a quiet getaway or a wholesome holiday you can pick your season.
Not many know that I’ve grown up in Udaipur. Spent almost all my teenage years there. Even after moving out years ago, it is one city that calls out to me more than my own home and I’ve been happy to oblige every few months with a weekend visit atleast.
We (K and I) have done our bit of travel across some of the most romantic cities ( but somehow nothing tugs at our heart-strings more than Udaipur. Whether it’s the dreamy narrow lanes and romantic gondolas like Venice , cobbled streets and outdoor cafes like Bruges , exquisite spas and the feeling of being the only two in the world like the Maldives , magical lights and gastronomical delights like Paris -Udaipur has all of this and much more to offer!
If you’ve never been to Udaipur, there might be a long list of “must visit” historical sites that you or your travel agent will help you make but I’ve never run into someone who’s been to Udaipur only once. Yeah, the lakes are almost as magical as the Trevi Fountain in Rome and I firmly believe that if you’ve been there once, you’ll go there again! (not least because the beauty of your last visit will never stop mesmerizing you). So, this to do list is mostly for your second or third or progressive visits because the first one may not afford you enough time to sit back and enjoy these places. Is Ambrai worth the hype? Here are the 10 best restaurants in Udaipur
Udaipur is a city in India where you can either dine like a maharaja relishing a multi-course feast or enjoy a simple ‘unlimited food’ thaali in a budget family restaurant. Wherever you might eat, one thing is assured – the food will always be delicious. All your taste buds will be rewarded – be it hardcore non-vegetarians looking for famous Rajasthani Laal-maans or vegetarians searching for the 800/- per kilo ‘Ker sangri’ (my favourite Rajasthani dish) along with daal baati churma . Whether you want to go on a romantic couple dinner or celebrate someone’s birthday or simply enjoy a fun meal with friends, Udaipur will have a restaurant just right for you. While circumventing the narrow lanes of Udaipur, be ready to get surprised by its culinary offering. You’ll be amazed to see how the city’s food scene go beyond Rajasthani fare. From picturesque fine dining restaurants on the lakeside to chic European-style cafes — the possibilities are endless. Here are the best restaurants and cafes of Udaipur that Travel See Write highly recommends:
The best restaurants in Udaipur
- Ambrai Restaurant at the Amet Haveli is one of the top restaurants in Udaipur when you are looking for a romantic candle light dinner lakeside. The expansive view of Lake Pichola, City Palace, Jag Mandir, Gangaur Ghat, Lal Ghat and even the Sajjangarh Fort is something that will make you believe you are living a dream. The restaurant has ample options when it comes to picking a cuisine – you can choose from North Indian, Mughlai, Continental, or Chinese here. I had ordered a mix of some mughlai starters (tandoori aloo nazakat, Dahi ke Kebab, Ambrai ke Falafel, and corn sheekh kabab), Rajasthani main course (Ker Sangri, Govind Gatta Curry, Daal-Baati-Churma, miss roti and pyaaz mirchi roti) and their signature mocktail. The food was delicious and quite filling. Frequented by many visitors, both Indian and foreign, the restaurant mostly remains full; therefore, make sure to make a prior booking.
- Khamma Ghani Restaurant – This upscale Indian restaurant near the Rang Sagar Lake is another must-visit Lakeview restaurant in Udaipur. The never-ending views over the lake give this restaurant its major draw and appeal. The best time to visit this place is before sunset when the Rang Sagar Lake and the city of Udaipur are coloured in the golden glow. Once the night sets in, the twinkling stars, moon decked up on the eternal dark blue sky ceiling, make the atmosphere even more romantic. Their authentic Rajasthani cuisine is to die for. Loved their starters and main course. Beteween Ambrai and Khamma Ghani, I liked the later’s food more. Though Ambrai will score more on location.
- 1559 restaurant – Named after the historical year (1559 AD) when Udaipur was founded by Maharana Udai Singhji, 1559 AD restaurant takes you to the bygone era. The building is about 95 years old, has been kept the same with a bit of fusion concept of art nouveau. With a few contemporary designs and ancient artefacts, this is the perfect blend of old and new. The old world hospitality is best delivered through its multi-cuisines. The classical live music played at the restaurant made the whole experience quite memorable and soothing.
- Upré by 1559 AD – A terrace restaurant with a beautiful view of the City Palace and Lake Palace, Upre is located in the Lake Pichola Hotel. The multi-cuisine restaurant offers a great variety – from local delicacies to international dishes. The elegant and chic décor of the restaurant with light curtains give the visitors their own privacy. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere makes it the best place to enjoy the beauty of Udaipur.
- Udai Kothi – Having been voted as the “best wedding venue” in Rajasthan and the best boutique hotel of India by the National Geographic Traveller, Udai Koothi is a must-visit place in Udaipur. Travel+Leisure voted Udai Kothi as the Best Affordable Romantic Hotels, and UrbanNista&Co. said it is one of the 21 world’s sexiest rooftop pools. Looking at the long list of awards won, it won’t be wrong to say that Udai Kothi has already left a lasting impression on everyone’s mind. If you want to surprise someone special with a truly romantic dining experience, the rooftop terrace restaurant at Udai Kothi hotel will be a great choice. Set around a pool, it will leave an everlasting charming experience. You can choose from an array of multi-cuisine dishes comprising Rajasthani, Indian, Chinese and Continental fares. The romantic ambience with plush backgrounds, moody lighting and delish food on the plate will truly set your mood on fire.
- Millets of Mewar : If you are a health-conscious person, this is a good health food restaurant. You can find a variety of vegan and gluten-free options. The ingredients used are organic, gluten-free and raw. A must-visit for those with a passion for local food and the environment.
- Neel Kamal Restaurant at Taj Lake Palace is a must-visit at least once in your life. But to get to this restaurant, you need to be the resident guest of the Taj Lake Palace hotel. Royalty and elegance radiate from Neel Kamal’s décor, with throne-like chairs, subtle colours reflected in the lily pond, and a hospitality team ready to take guests on an enchanting gastro0mic journey through the fragrances and flavours of Rajasthan. The live classical music playing in the background completes the refined atmosphere.
- Darikhana – Part of Jagmandir Island Palace, Jag Mandir’s Darikhana offers seating indoors and outdoors. While the food menu is limited, the restaurant is renowned for its excellent and wide selection of alcohol. Overlooking the City Palace and the Karni Mata Temple, the restaurant offers a serene and calm experience. This is one of the must-visit restaurants in Udaipur.
- Savage Garden: Tucked away in one of the old city lanes, this atmospheric café-restaurant is located inside a pleasant, airy blue-coloured building. Its partial open-air setting and numerous flowering plants make Savage Garden a charming place for meals and snacks. The menu offers delectable continental fare. Their pastas, sandwiches, soups and desserts are worth trying.
- Enigma: Located at Kamlawadi in Udaipur, Enigma is a multi-cuisine restaurant that serves Chinese, Indian and Continental fares. Not only does the restaurant offer delectable food and drinks, but the view from the terrace is stunning, to say the least. You can see the panoramic view of the entire Udaipur city from its roof. The restaurant is also a great place to click some Instagram worthy pictures – you can get clicked on carved winged couple chairs kept indoors or throne and hand-shaped ones at the rooftop. The live music made the environment even more soothing. Also, I loved their open-air pizza and cocktail bar.
Besides the above, I tried ‘ Soul Bistro and Lounge’ by Sun and Moon Udaipur on a local friend’s recommendation. They claim to be one of the best rooftops café in Udaipur but, frankly, didn’t find them extraordinary. In fact, the food and drinks were pretty average, and the environment was quite loud. Maybe it’s meant more for a younger audience looking to party and not a visitor trying to soak the romantic vibe of the city.
While there is no shortage of the best fine dining restaurants in Udaipur with a great view, the city also has a rich legacy in street food. Your craving for street food items such as samosa, kachori, aloo bada, vada pav, or dabeli will get fully satiated at Sukhadia Circle, Chetak Circle or Mumbai Market. Some places worth checking out are Bohra Ghanpati Mishtan for samosas, Shri Lala Mishtan for kachoris and Bhole Nath Nashta Center for poha.
And, if you are looking for some cheap but good quality restaurants in Udaipur, you can’t go wrong with Natraj Dining Hall and Restaurant . Their thali is a must. Places like Bawarchi Restaurant, Queen Café, and Jasmin are worth visiting too.
A few Rajasthani dishes that are an absolute must-try in Udaipur are Gatte ki sabzi, Ker Sangri, Laal Maans, Mawa Kacchori, Pyaaz Kacchori, Samosa, and Mewari Styled Curries.

The above factors create a comprehensive framework for your decision-making process. Each aspect contributes uniquely to your vacation experience.
Destination’s Safety : Destination safety encompasses crime rates, health risks, and natural disasters. Organizations like the U.S. State Department issue travel advisories that help travelers assess safety. A 2022 report indicated that countries like Japan and Singapore ranked high on safety indexes, making them desirable for travelers.
Climate and Weather : Climate influences when and where to travel. Asia has diverse climates. For example, Southeast Asia experiences a tropical climate, while Northern Asia can be much colder. The best travel seasons often depend on this variable. The World Meteorological Organization advises planning trips during dry seasons to avoid disruptions.

A 2021 study from the World Bank showed that Asian countries present a wide range of costs, making careful budgeting essential for travel.
Cultural and Historical Attractions : Cultural appeal includes historical sites, museums, and traditional practices. Countries like India are known for their rich history, while countries like Taiwan draw visitors with their unique blend of modern and traditional culture. Language Barriers : Language proficiency can affect communication. Countries with fewer English speakers may present challenges. However, destinations known for tourism often have resources available in multiple languages. A 2020 report from the British Council highlighted the impact of language on accessible tourism.
Duration of Travel : The length of your stay can influence your destination. Short trips may require choosing closer locations or countries with efficient transport networks.
