MSC Cancels Repositioning Cruise Set for 2025

  • September 26, 2024

MSC Musica at Piraeus

MSC Cruises recently canceled a 24-night repositioning voyage onboard the MSC Musica that was scheduled to sail from South Africa to Europe in April 2025.

“We regret to inform you that due to operational reasons affecting the deployment of the MSC Musica your upcoming cruise has been canceled,” the company said in a statement sent to booked guests.

Wrapping up a seasonal program in South Africa, the MSC Musica was scheduled to sail from Durban to Genoa starting on April 2, 2025.

The month-long itinerary included destinations in the Indian Ocean before transiting the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

On its way to the Mediterranean, the 2006-built ship was also scheduled to make visits to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.

In addition to Genoa, passengers were also able to end their cruises in other European ports, including Civitavecchia, Marseille, and Lisbon.

“We understand that this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize for the disappointment this may cause,” MSC Cruises said.

According to the statement, passengers will be able to choose between three options, including a full refund of the fare paid for the booking.

The company is also allowing guests to transfer their booking to any other Grand Voyage of a similar duration without any administration fee.

For this option, if the passenger selects a cruise of the same length and booked in the same category, MSC will guarantee that the most convenient cruise fare between the original and new booking is applied.

MSC is also offering the possibility of booking any other cruise currently available for sale without any administration fee, the statement added.

Spending the 2024-25 winter in South Africa, the MSC Musica is set to offer a series of two- to 12-night cruises departing from Durban and South Africa between late November and late March.

The ship is also scheduled to offer a special sailing to the sub-Antarctic Islands of Prince Edward and Marion in January 2025.

This Cruise Line Will Have the Only Eataly at Sea

This is some serious maritime decadence.

Courtesy of MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises ' newest flagship, MSC World America , will be one seriously distinct ship thanks to its one-of-a-kind food offering. On Wednesday, the cruise company announced its new ship will be home to the only Eataly restaurant at sea when she enters service next year.

"We are in the constant pursuit of providing our guests with unique and authentic experiences to take them on gastronomic journeys of discovery. With every new ship, we select a range of new venues and concepts, including partnerships with world-class brands to elevate our culinary offerings for our guests," Stéphane Franchini, the senior director of food and beverage products at MSC Cruises, shared with Food & Wine. "We wanted to offer venues that are unlike anything at sea, providing memorable experiences, and this partnership with Eataly, the global ambassador of high-quality Italian food and wine, was a perfect fit." As for what guests can expect on the menu, it includes some of the brand’s "most beloved dishes to items exclusively available on board," all sourced from Italian suppliers and pasta crafted on-site.

msc voyage search

"If you could describe the menu in one word, it would be 'fresh,'" Franchini added. "We took a close look at what our guests want from dining experiences onboard, and that boils down to fresh experiences and fresh ingredients."

Though the company wouldn't divulge specific dishes, Franchini did share they are developing exclusive "basil-forward dishes and cocktails for the ship," adding that guests won't want to miss "the Mandilli al Pesto’s mix of delicate pasta sheets with all that fresh basil flavor. We’re also including many of Eataly’s most iconic existing dishes, including their fantastic Tiramisu."

All of it will also be prepared in an open kitchen, with select dishes prepared tableside,  ensuring an intimate dining experience. "As a company with a strong European heritage, our gastronomy has always played an important role in our guest experience, which is why we have partnered with Eataly, an emblem of Made in Italy and Italian culinary artistry," Franchini added. "Both MSC Cruises and Eataly share a passion for high-quality, authentic food made with fresh ingredients, and together, we are creating a unique experience exclusively on board."

Of course, this isn't the only place guests will be able to dine onboard. Eataly is joined by five other restaurants, including Kaito Sushi Bar and Teppanyaki, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, and Paxos Restaurant, which Franchini noted, offers "a fresh, seafood-forward menu, complete with a fresh fish counter display for guests to choose from," allowing guests to dine around the globe as they sail around it too.

MSC Starship Club's Rob - the first-at-sea humanoid robot bartender

On Virtuosa MSC Cruises introduced the fleet's first MSC Starship Club (MSC Starliner One Bar) spaceship-themed venue served by the industry's first humanoid robot bartender - named Rob. Working on this project for 6 years (since 2015), MSC partnered with experts from companies specializing in entertainment experiences, digital solutions, robotics, automation, and interior design.

MSC Starship Club provides integrated bar-and-entertainment experiences and its interior is marked by a cold-white ceiling, a digital art wall, 3D holographic projections, a 12-seat digital (touchscreen) table for personalized interactive galactic tours.

Rob mixes and serves cocktails while entertaining the guests by moving his body, head and arms (shaking-stirring-garnishing-pouring drinks) in a natural way. The humanoid barman speaks 8 languages (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese) and engages with his voice and human-like (LED face) expressions/emotions.

Between making and serving beverages, Rob interacts with the passengers, changes his facial expressions, dances, tells jokes, riddles, cosmic facts and trivia. Orders are placed in vertical digital cockpits. The drinks are served in futuristic, custom-made (MSC branded) souvenir glasses. The humanoid bartender can prepare a total of 16 "cosmic cocktails" (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) plus personalized (made-to-order) drinks using 40+ ingredients.

The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number H34) has volume 181541 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 19610 tons, max draught 9 m. The powerplant is based on 4x Wartisla marine diesel engines (models 2x 12V46DF plus 2x 16V46DF) with combined output 64 MW (85830 hp). The propulsion is based on 2x Azipod thrusters with combined output 40 MW (53640). The registered shipowner is VISTA 4 COMPANIA NAVIERA SA, while the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.

On February 1, 2016, MSC announced a shipbuilding order for two Meraviglia Plus-class units. The newbuilds are with max capacity 6300 passengers, 200 additional cabins and longer (16 m / 50 ft) compared to Meraviglia-Class. Meraviglia-Plus vessels were delivered in October 2019 ( Grandiosa ) and April 2020 (Virtuosa).

Bookings on MSC Virtuosa cruises were opened on November 21, 2018 (for MSC Voyagers Club/loyalty program members) and on December 3 (for general customers). Sales for the inaugural cruise (November 8, 2020, from Genoa ) were opened on October 7, 2018. The promo offer was for MSC Voyagers Club members only (exclusive access through October 21 midnight), who also received a special discount (5%) in addition to their regular 5% loyalty discount. All potential customers also receive 5% Early Booking Discount (through June 3, 2019).

The vessel's construction started with the keel-laying (coin) ceremony held on February 27, 2019, at St Nazaire 's Chantiers de l’Atlantique Shipyard. The ship was rescheduled for delivery in November 2020. On the same day (Feb 27), to MSC was delivered Bellissima . During the traditional keel-laying, two shipyard employees placed 2 special-edition coins (under the hull’s first keel block) for good luck. The ceremony's godmothers were Helen Huang (MSC Cruises China's President) and Elise Guerin (shipyard's Project Manager).

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on December 1, 2019, following the delivery of MSC Grandiosa  (October 31) and the steel-cutting of  MSC World Europa (also on Oct 31). Chantiers de l'Atlantique officially delivered Virtuosa to MSC on February 1, 2021. The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Executive Chairman) and his family (the wife Alexa Aponte-Vago and the children) and Laurent Castaing (shipbuilder's General Manager).

In mid-July 2021, MSC announced that Virtuosa's christening ceremony will be held at Port Rashid (Dubai UAE) . The ship's naming ceremony was held on November 27, 2021, as part of the UAE Golden Jubilee (UAE's 50th anniversary) featuring celebrations planned for the period April 6, 2021, through March 31, 2022. The ship's naming ceremony was attended by MSC's traditional godmother Sophia Loren (1934-born Italian actress) who christened 17 (out of MSC fleet's 19 ships) - each newbuild since 2003. VIP guests at the event were Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC), Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem (DP World's President and CEO), His Excellency Helal Saeed Al Marri (DTCM's Director-General/Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing), His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Saeed Rashid Al Maktoum (UAE's Vice President and Prime Minister).

Meraviglia Plus-Class ship technology

New features on Meraviglia-Plus ships include the first at sea fine-art museum (with original artworks), longer (111 m / 36 ft) indoor promenade (Galleria) and larger LED screen (95x6 m / 280x20 ft) for the pool deck's outdoor theater. The extra space in the Galleria allows two additional restaurants. MSC signed an exclusive partnership with Samsung (providing the digital technology) and Cirque du Soleil (providing live shipboard programming).

Meraviglia Plus-class ships are also the fleet's most technologically advanced, implementing the latest marine engine technologies. Their machinery includes hybrid scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems), SCR (selective catalytic reduction system converting NOx into diatomic nitrogen), most efficient waste plant, latest wastewater treatment system, superior recycling capabilities, emission-reducing, and fuel-efficient heat recovery system.

On February 1, 2019, MSC officially revealed the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. The technology ("cruise industry first") was developed by Harman International (USA-based company, a fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics). Harman International has developed digital audio solutions for major corporations (Including Google, Microsoft, Amazon).

ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms. ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.

The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connections (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.

Passenger data (including itinerary/tour and shipboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used on the next scheduled voyage.

The device (sized ~15 cm) can be activated whenever passengers choose. A waiver must be signed to agree for their personal data to be stored.

Starting with Bellissima (2019), ZOE is now available on all newbuild MSC liners and introduced fleetwide over 2019-2024.

MSC working to recover cargo, debris that fell from cargo ship in Eastern Cape

msc voyage search

MSC says it is working to recover containers and debris that fell overboard its cargo ship as it was leaving the East London port last month.

MSC Antonia encountered “adverse sea conditions” when it was leaving South Africa on August 28.

The company said: “Unfortunately a number of containers were damaged or lost overboard off the coast of East London.

“In close coordination with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), MSC has implemented a comprehensive network with a central coordination hub and specialised operators ready to respond along the entire coastline. Ships equipped with sonar have been deployed to search for missing cargo at sea.”

The company confirmed most of the cargo and debris had been spotted and recovered but it was “possible that what is left will wash up ashore in the coming days”.

MSC urged residents to not approach the items but to immediately report their sighting.

“MSC takes the incident very seriously, both in terms of the impact of such accidents on the natural environment and in terms of any damage to customer cargo. In all aspects of the clean-up MSC is collaborating with local authorities.”

TimesLIVE earlier this month reported mop-up operations were under way along the country's eastern coastline between Gqeberha and nearby northeastern towns after thousands of pharmaceutical bottles washed ashore.

Rebecca Roth is on board the MSC Seashore with her son and her sister.

She said it’s her very first cruise and it has been a rocky one.

She said the trip began Sunday, Sept. 22. Roth and her family were supposed to get off the ship Thursday morning, but due to the weather, the cruise line extended the trip an extra day.

Roth says right now, she’s somewhere in the Atlantic and adds that the additional day was given to them for free given the circumstances.

She said the cruise line also opened up the Wi-Fi so passengers could notify loved ones of their situation.

She had to make calls to extend pet care. Her sister had to make a call letting her workplace know she won’t be making it.

“It’s a big deal, like, we wanted to go home by now. We actually stayed in our room pretty much all day today just because the ocean has been so rough, and it’s been making the ship rock, so it’s a little queasy. So, we haven’t been doing much,” Roth said.

Officials with Port Canaveral said they’re hoping to re-open first thing Friday morning.

That would happen after the U.S. Coast Guard has a chance to inspect the water and the docks to make sure both are safe.

Port officials said that the ship that Roth and her family are on is expected to be the first one back since it’s been out the longest.

A statement provided to us by a spokesperson with the cruise line says:

MSC Seashore will return from its current sailing on Friday, September 27, one day later than previously planned, due to Port Canaveral’s closure on Thursday, September 26 related to Hurricane Helene.

MSC Seashore’s three-night cruise which was originally scheduled to depart on Thursday, September 26, has been updated to a two-night sailing departing on Friday, September 27, visiting Ocean Cay on Saturday, September 28, and returning to Port Canaveral as planned on Sunday, September 29.

We have notified impacted guests. Our top priority is the safety of our guests and crew, along with minimizing the weather's impact on our guests' vacation plans.

Titan 's Support Ship Felt a 'Shudder' When It Lost Contact with Doomed Sub That Imploded: Hearing

U.S. Coast Guard

The Polar Prince ’s master told Coast Guard investigators that he recalled feeling his ship “shudder” around the same time its communications with the Titan submersible were lost last year during the Titan's doomed dive down to the wreck of the Titanic .

On Friday, Sept. 27, during the two-week hearing into the 2023 Titan tragedy held by a U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation, officials were shown an exhibit featuring a written October 2023 interview with the master of the Polar Prince , the Titan 's support ship, about the incident on June 18, 2023.

In his written answers to the Coast Guard's questions, the master (the Polar Prince 's captain) said that "with the benefit of hindsight," he believes he had “felt the Polar Prince shudder at around the time communications were reportedly lost" but did not realize it until later.

“At the time, we thought nothing of it,” the master said, noting, “It was slight.”

At the hearing on Friday, Jamie Frederick, the Coast Guard captain who oversaw the Titan search-and-rescue mission, said this was “the first” time he had heard about the “shudder.”

Not sharing that information with the unified command, he added, “would be unconscionable.”

“It’s a piece of info we didn’t have,” Frederick said. “It’s information that could have had a drastic impact on the search efforts.”

Earlier during the multi-day hearing, the last messages sent by the Titan submersible before it imploded were revealed.

At 10:15 a.m. local time, about a half hour before communications between the Titan and Polar Prince abruptly ended, the Titan told its support ship “all good here.”

The Coast Guard said Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a noted explorer who was aboard the submersible when it imploded, is believed to have been sending the final round of messages.

The last one, just seconds before contact was cut, was apparently about the vessel dropping weights while near the Titanic .

All five people who were onboard the Titan died in the implosion: Nargeolet; Hamish Hardin; father and son Shahzada and Suleiman Dawood; and Stockton Rush, who co-founded OceanGate, the company operating the Titan .

Human remains were subsequently found as part of the recovery mission, Coast Guard officials have said.
