Venice cruise port: How to spend your day in Italy’s most romantic city
Setting sail from Italy's Stazione Marittima (Venezia Terminal Passeggeri) near sunset is one of the most magical cruising experiences in the world. And if you're aboard a smaller cruise ship, gliding down the Grand Canal as the sinking sun colors iconic landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace in golden hues is likely a memory you will never forget.
Renowned for its romantic canals, historic architecture and rich cultural heritage, Venice is an enchanting port call on many European and Mediterranean itineraries. The port's location offers easy access to major transportation hubs, including Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and Treviso Airport (TSF), making it convenient. Numerous hotels in the vicinity provide excellent options for pre- or post-cruise stays.
As a gateway to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, the historic Venice port has seen a significant increase in activity in recent years, with more than 1.5 million passengers passing through annually. It currently accommodates more than 30 cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises , MSC Cruises , Oceania Cruises and Silversea Cruises .
However, this increase in tourism over the years has created concerns about the impact of cruise ships on the city's delicate architecture and environment. As such, Italian officials have begun redirecting larger ships to other ports, with these changes set to take full effect in the coming years. These ports include Chioggia, roughly 30 miles south of Venice; Ravenna, about 90 miles south of Venice; and Trieste, about 100 miles northeast of Venice. If you are starting or ending your cruise in Venice, you will want to double-check what port you are departing from.
3 things TPG loves about Venice
- The enchanting canals and historic architecture
- World-renowned landmarks
- Distinctive shopping and dining experiences, like grabbing cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and wine at a bacaro (local wine bar)
What we could do without
- Crowded tourist spots, especially when cruise ships are in port
- High prices
- Impact of mass tourism (increased water pollution and foot traffic damage to Venice's historic buildings)
Venice cruise port overview
Stazione Marittima is on the western side of Venice's historic center, near Piazzale Roma and the Tronchetto parking island. It's used as both a home port and a port of call for smaller cruise ships and river cruise vessels, including Seabourn , Windstar Cruises , Ponant Cruises and Viking .
Larger cruise lines that home port in Venice now dock at nearby Marghera or other regional ports like Ravenna or Trieste. From there, passengers take a shuttle service to Stazione Marittima. The port has modern facilities, including terminals, shuttle services, and amenities such as cafes and shops. Upon arrival, passengers can easily access Venice's main attractions by foot, water taxi or the city's famous Vaporetto (water bus) system.

Top things to do in the Venice cruise port
St. Mark's Basilica
This stunning basilica is an absolute must-see in Venice. Known for its intricate Italo-Byzantine architecture, St. Mark's Basilica is adorned with more than 85,000 square feet of beautiful 13th-century mosaics. The basilica also has more than 500 Byzantine columns, some from the 6th century. Visitors can explore the church's interior, climb up to the terrace for spectacular views of St. Mark's Square and visit the museum to see the famous "Horses of Saint Mark" bronze sculptures.
Doge's Palace
Adjacent to St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace is a Gothic masterpiece that served as the Doge of Venice's residence and the seat of the Venetian government. Its opulent rooms are filled with Renaissance art and splendid decorations. The palace's prison cells and the infamous Bridge of Sighs, connecting the palace to the prison, offer a glimpse into the darker side of Venetian history.
Rialto Bridge
One of the most famous bridges in Venice, the Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal and offers picturesque views of the bustling waterway below. Completed in 1591, it is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal.
The Rialto Bridge is a marvel of Renaissance engineering and was constructed as a single-span stone bridge. That was a daring design choice in the late 16th century when many believed it would collapse under its own weight. It did not, and its elegant arches have stood the test of time. Stroll across it to feel the city's vibrant energy, capture some unforgettable pictures, and check out the rows of shops selling everything from jewelry to souvenirs.
Gondola rides
No trip to Venice is complete without a gondola ride. These traditional boats offer a unique perspective of the city's canals and historic buildings. Depending on when your cruise departs or if you arrive early or stay late, gondola rides are particularly romantic in the evening, as the setting sun casts a golden glow over the water. For an extra-special experience, consider booking a serenaded gondola ride, where musicians will sing classic Italian songs as you drift through the canals.
Murano and Burano islands
A short boat ride from Venice, the islands of Murano and Burano are acclaimed for their artisanal crafts. Murano is renowned for its glassblowing workshops, where you can watch artisans at work and purchase gorgeous handmade glass pieces. Burano is known for its brightly colored houses and intricate lacemaking. A visit to these islands also provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Popular Venice excursions
Cultural and historical excursions
One of the most popular city excursions is a guided tour of St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace. These tours often include skip-the-line access, allowing you to bypass the long lines and delve straight into the history and artistry of these iconic landmarks. The knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into the history of Venice and its rise as a maritime power.
Active excursions
A gondola ride combined with a walking tour is an excellent option for staying active. Start with a scenic gondola ride through the canals, followed by a guided walking and food tour through the winding streets of Venice. You'll get a good taste of the best of Venice in a short amount of time.
Island-hopping
Excursions to the Murano, Burano and Torcello islands are a popular choice if you've been to Venice and are looking for a new excursion. These tours typically include visits to glassblowing workshops in Murano, Burano's colorful streets and Torcello's historic churches. Each island offers its unique charm and a different aspect of Venetian culture.

Best Venice beaches near the cruise port
The closest beach to Venice, Lido di Venezia, has a sandy shoreline and a range of beach clubs where you can chill all day. This barrier island can provide a beachy escape from the city crowds (although it's also sometimes crowded) and offers opportunities for sunbathing and swimming.
Lido is about 4.3 miles from the port, and the journey takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the transport you use. The fastest way to the barrier island is by a private water taxi from the port, which takes about 30 minutes.
To save some cash, walk about 20 minutes from the port. You can also take the People Mover train (the ride takes about five minutes and a one-way ticket costs 1.50 euros) to Piazzale Roma. From there, take Vaporetto Line 1 or Line 5.1 directly to Lido. For a scenic tour of the Grand Canal, take Line 1 in one of the directions, but know the trip is longer, close to an hour. Line 5.1 is more direct and takes about 45 minutes.
How to get around Venice on your own
On foot: Venice is a pedestrian city, and many of its main attractions are within walking distance of each other. Strolling through the narrow streets and across the picturesque bridges is one of the best ways to experience the city's charm and discover hidden gems.
Water taxi: In Venice, water taxis offer a quicker and more convenient way to get around. These private boats can be pricey, though, costing around 70-80 euros for a short trip for up to four passengers. However, they offer a direct and comfortable mode of transportation, especially for those who are traveling with luggage or in a group.
Vaporetto (water bus): The Vaporetto is Venice's primary mode of public transport. These water buses run regular routes along the Grand Canal and to the outer islands. They provide an affordable and efficient way to navigate the city, with tickets available for single journeys costing 7.50 euros and a 24-hour card for unlimited travel costing 20 euros.
Venice restaurants near the cruise port
The Cannaregio and Dorsoduro districts are known for their authentic Venetian cuisine and are great places to explore for a meal. Here, you can find traditional dishes such as cicchetti, risotto al nero di seppia (squid ink risotto) and fresh seafood dishes.
These areas are less touristy than the eateries near St. Mark's Square and usually have better quality food at more reasonable prices. Don't forget to try a classic Venetian dessert like tiramisu or a refreshing gelato from one of the many gelaterias scattered around the city.
Venice cruise port shopping
Venice is a great shopping city with a mix of high-end boutiques, local artisan shops and vibrant markets. The historic Rialto Market is an excellent place to start. Near the Rialto Bridge, it is a lively spot where locals pick up fresh produce, seafood and other Venetian specialties. It is easy to get lost just wandering the stalls here. The surrounding shops also offer an assortment of souvenirs, from Venetian carnival masks and handmade lace to Murano glass and marbled paper.
Head to Calle Larga XXII Marzo for high-end boutiques. Along this street, you'll find international brands like Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton, as well as local designers. It's a shopper's paradise, offering everything from fashion to jewelry and accessories.
Mercerie is another bustling shopping street connecting St. Mark's Square to the Rialto Bridge. It's lined with a mix of local shops and international stores, offering a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories and souvenirs. The Mercerie is excellent for finding unique Venetian items like handcrafted masks and glasswork.
Free things to do in the Venice cruise port
One of the best free ways to experience Venice is simply by wandering through its narrow streets and canals. The city's architecture, bridges and hidden squares are delightful to explore on foot, and you'll often stumble upon charming cafes and shops.
While some attractions in the square require an entrance fee, it costs nothing to walk around St. Mark's Square and admire the stunning architecture of St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile and the surrounding buildings. The square is also excellent for people-watching and soaking in Venice's vibrant vibe.
Walking across the iconic Rialto Bridge for views of the Grand Canal is a free activity in Venice. The bridge is a piece of history, and the surrounding area teems with shops and lively cafes.
Bottom line
Stazione Marittima offers easy access to the city center, famed for its unique blend of historic charm, cultural richness and scenic beauty. From exploring iconic landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace to enjoying a romantic gondola ride through the canals, this enchanting city has something for everyone.
Despite the challenges posed by mass tourism, Venice remains a must-visit destination, offering unforgettable experiences and a glimpse into Italy's rich heritage.

Ravenna is famous for its spectacular mosaics from the 5th and 6th century that are found in cathedrals, palaces, and public buildings everywhere.
In Venice, you’ll find a canal-filled city that is equal parts gritty and romantic, known as a fishermen’s town turned cultural hub. Venice is popular for honeymooners and international tourists alike, filling the elaborate, sinuous system of canals with the buzz of activity. Like Rome and Florence, there’s a magic to the city’s energy that sweeps you up in it, whether you’re exploring St. Mark’s Square on foot or enjoying a gondola ride along the Grand Canal before sailing on one of our cruises from Ravenna.
Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, is considered the gastronomic center of Italy. It’s here that you’ll find some of the world’s best wines, prosciutto, cheese, and balsamic vinegar. Stroll the medieval town’s many photogenic porticoes until you arrive at Piazza Maggiore, the huge and charming public square where you can stop for a gelato or an espresso and people watch.

Top things to do in venice, take a gondola ride.
To skip a gondola ride in Venice is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. It’s an unmissable experience no matter if it’s your first time in Venice or you’ve seen the city many times. After being on cruises from Venice, there’s nothing more charming than seeing the city from a nimble, tiny gondola.
Head to Burano
On the island of Burano, just a short boat ride away, is a fishing village lined with colorful houses where the area’s lace-making has earned an international reputation. Come for the shopping, meet local artisans, and stay for a casual lunch at one of the island’s many quaint restaurants.
Explore Bologna
Located between Venice and Florence, Bologna is a must-visit on your Italian cruise. This city has it all—spectacular food tours, museums, art galleries, medieval towers, and the world’s oldest university, built in 1088. Stroll through its charming Piazza Maggiore, home to the impressive Fountain of Neptune. Visit nearby Motor Valley, where the finest Italian cars are made—Lamborghini, Ferrari, Ducati, Pagani, and Maserati. Or, simply enjoy a spectacular meal in the gastronomic center of Italy.
Top Food and Drink Spots in Venice
Venice is a foodie’s destination through and through. Restaurants and bars wind along the canal, and an unhurried approach is what makes a long lunch so satisfying here. Like the rest of Italy, you’re better off eating dinner a little later in the evening as the Italians do. Grab a spritz or a tall glass of wine and taste the region’s typical pasta entrees and plates of fresh Adriatic fish. Enjoy raw fish, crudo, as the Italians say, if you’re feeling daring. The coffee culture here is just as strong as in Rome or Florence, and you shouldn’t leave Italy without enjoying a coffee or espresso for just a euro or two. Remember—no coffee with milk after 11am. The Italians consider it bad for digestion.
Culture & History of Venice
Venice has historically been Italy’s most romantic destination, and its geographic quirks and peculiarity of how the city developed over the centuries only add to its photogenic charm. Its winding streets, built around the canals and lagoons, predate human impact on the area. Historic basilicas date back to the Middle Ages, when the city became a cultural touchstone and trade hub.
Ravenna (Venice) Port Facilities & Location
The departure port of Ravenna is located approximately two hours and 30 minutes south of Venice and only one hour from the beautiful city of Bologna, known as the culinary capital of Italy.
Transportation in Venice
Getting around in Venice is romantic in any setting, but a gondola ride along its intricate system of canals is a must during your time here. Boats and water taxis are a popular mode of transportation and taking a traghetto, or gondola ride, only costs a couple of euros per person. Public transit in Venice is also an option, including boats and a monorail system. If you’re sticking around the central sights, walking will do, too.
Shopping in Venice
Shoppers will find that Venice is a pretty paradise for retail, artisanal goods, boutiques, and high-end glasswares. It’s not hard to get a feel for Venice’s shopping scene, which includes leather goods like purses, belts, and more. There are, of course, the standard tourist shacks and shiny items highlighting Venice’s attractions, like the Grand Canal and the Bridge of Sighs.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
While traveling to Italy, you’ll use the euro as the official currency. You’ll notice Visa and Mastercard are the two most commonly accepted credit cards during your Venice cruise. A servizio, or tip, is typically included in your bill at restaurants. If you take a gondola ride, be sure to tip the gondolier or water taxi provider. When you’re enjoying a coffee in Italy, leave behind a few cents as a tip.

The Venice Lagoon is an enclosed bay of Adriatic Sea, located in northern Italy, in which Venice city is situated. Its name in the Venetian and Italian languages, Laguna Veneta (which is cognate of Latin lacus/lake) provided the international name for a shallow, enclosed embayment of saltwater, a lagoon.
The Venetian Lagoon stretches from River Sile in the north to Brenta in the south and has a surface area of 550 km2 (212 mi2). It is about 8% land, including Venice and plenty of smaller islands. Around 11% is covered by open water, canal, as the dredged channels' network are called, while about 80% consists of tidal shallows, salt marshes and mudflats. The lagoon is the biggest wetland in Mediterranean Basin.
MOSE - Venice flood barrier project
MOSE project is designed to protect Venice and the Venetian Lagoon from flooding caused by high tides (up to 3 m / 10 ft). The integrated system consists of rows of large mobile gates at 3 inlets (Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia) through which Adriatic Sea water enters and leaves the Venetian Lagoon.
These gates are able to temporarily isolate the lagoon from the sea during high tides as they open and close separately thus controlling the water flow.
In the Mose system's control center is in Venice's Arsenal, where 9 people constantly monitor the lagoon's conditions. The monitoring staff's training started in 2011 by simulating real-time flood defense operations. During that period was also collected data about water levels, waves, water pressure, fresh river flood.
Flooding due to high tides mires Venice during winter months. During high tide forecasts, sirens all over the city sound a warning, and real-time information is provided (online and via mobile phones). Other measures are setting up temporary elevated platforms in city parts with heavy pedestrian traffic.
High tides usually last 2 1/2 hours.
Venice's flood of November 4th, 1966, saw water levels reaching up to 194 cm (6 ft). This was the end of agriculture in the lagoon and also resulted in the death of the majority of its plants. Previously, the lagoon was a winemaking region.
The Mose barrier concept was first proposed in 1988.
The consortium Venezia Nuova was contracted by Italy's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Construction works (simultaneously at all 3 lagoon inlets) started in 2003.
The project also included other anti-flood measures - coastal reinforcement, raising quaysides, lagoon improvement.
The project was 85% completed in 2014. In 2016, the gates arrived and were inserted into their concrete foundations.
The project's total cost is EUR 5,4 billion (GBP 3,9 billion). Completion is scheduled sometime between 2018-2020.
Construction works on the MOSE system were slowed due to investigations into corruption, with allegations of bribery and illegal political parties financing. The investigation resulted in 35 arrests (in June 2014). Among the arrested was Consorzio Venezia Nuova's former president, who was accused of diverting funds to Venice's mayor for financing his campaign for office in 2010.
Construction works included pre-building concrete foundations (23,000 tons each), then lowering them into the lagoon. Gates have spares (for each inlet), which allows to be removed every 5 years (for maintenance) without interrupting the barrier's service. All hinges on the gates are equipped with a waterproof camera that permits removal operations to be accurately monitored and controlled.
The commercial harbor is impacted each time the gates are lifted. The amount of electricity used for the operations is also considerable.
Venice City was established in the 7th century as a cluster of all 124 island settlements.
Venice Islands cruise terminal
The largest Venetian Lagoon Islands or archipelagos by area (excluding the coastal barrier beaches and coastal reclaimed land) include Venice Island (5.17 km2), Sant Erasmo Island (3.26 km2) and Murano Island (1.17 km2).
Originally many of the Venice Lagoon Islands were marshy, but a programme of drainage made them inhabitable. Many of the smaller isles are entirely artificial. Some areas around the seaport of Mestre are reclaimed islands. The remaining are essentially dunes, including the ones of the coastal strip (Treporti, Pellestrina and Lido).

Cruises from/to Venice, Italy
Venice, italy cruise port.
The magic and wonderment of Venice cannot be explained. A city built upon canals, where cars are not allowed, seems like something out of a history book. A gondola ride through the canals under the beautiful bridges that span the waterways is the perfect way to get in the city’s romantic mood. Venice is more than just its waterways though. It has wonderful artwork, stunning architecture and a long history of producing fine products like glass and lace. But we recommend that you cruise to Venice and discover this powerhouse of a city soon, as with each passing year the city sinks between 2 and 10 millimeters. Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Venice, Italy:
- The Basilica de San Marco is a grand church decorated with inspiration from buildings in Constantinople. The church is just as stunning from the inside where it is decorated with byzantine mosaics and the Pala d’Oro, an altarpiece adorned with gems and enameled panels.
- Hop on a vaporetto, or waterbus, to cruise the Grand Canal and take in the views of the various buildings, many built between the 14 th and 18 th centuries.
- Visit the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, which was the first known instance of a ghetto. Here Jewish culture and people still thrive and cruisers are encouraged to take a tour to learn about the customs of the area.
- Check out the art collection of Peggy Guggenheim who became friends with artists like Jackson Pollock and Max Ernst, who she later married. The collection is housed in her former home, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.
- Check out a “furnace” or open workshop in Murano to check out glass blowers in action. You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to buy locally blown glass on the island.

WHEN IN ITALY, ROAM ITS CITIES
Every city in Italy has its on unique flair that make it worth visiting — and in the case of Ravenna, it’s an endless bounty of art and architecture. Set out for an unforgettable adventure with picturesque views found only in Italy.
GONE WITH THE GONDOLA
Venice is pure magic — and just over 2 hours from Ravenna. Wander through narrow alleyways that lead to breathtaking views of the city’s iconic canals and gondolas. Explore legendary sites like the Bridge of Sighs, Doge’s Palace and Grand Canal. And take a gelato or espresso break at St. Mark’s Square to people watch. Surrounded by stunning works of art and architecture, will have you feeling like you’re in a live painting.
THAT’S BOLOGNA!
Bologna is one of Italy’s best kept secrets. A quick hour car ride from Ravenna, this charming city delights with ancient towers, gorgeous squares and beautiful porticos — or archways supported by columns. But its Bologna’s foodie scene, that will surely leave a lasting impression. Stroll through Piazza Maggiore and stop at any surrounding restaurants to indulge in Italian specialties — and discover for yourself why Bologna is considered Italy’s culinary capital.

DANTE’S TOMB BATTLE
Visit the tomb of famous Italian poet, Dante Alighieri — best known for writing The Divine Comedy. The poet was excommunicated from Florence for his controversial works and fled to Ravenna where he died in 1321. Ironically, centuries later, Florence fought for his remains to be sent back to his birthplace, but Ravenna refused to release them.
BE THERE. BE SQUARE
Located in the heart of the historic district, Piazza del Popolo is one Ravenna’s most lively squares. Take in the surrounding architectural marvels while dining al fresco in one of its many picturesque outdoor restaurants. Be sure to take a stroll to the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare — within walking distance from the square.
LOCAL CUISINE
When it comes to food, you can’t leave Ravenna without trying Piadina. The local staple is a delicious flatbread folded in half and stuffed with with salami, cheese and vegetables perfect for lunch or dinner.
To find the best local produce, head to il Mercato Coperto. There you’ll find the freshest flowers, fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, and home-related products — all sold by merchants from the region.
