The Best Places to Buy Souvenirs in Belfast

A selection of crafts from Studio Souk

Northern Ireland is a destination to remember, but the standard of souvenirs can be poor. Stay away from the “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirts, the turf incense burners, and the plush leprechauns in favour of something more unique. With our list of the best places to buy souvenirs in Belfast , you’ll be able to grab the perfect gift, whether for you or your loved ones!

Field Day Candles

Formerly known as Bog Standard, Field Day Candles are anything but bog standard. Made in Ireland using Irish ingredients, their candles and fragrance sachets can take the country’s iconic scents anywhere. Research has shown that scent is the sense most linked to memory, so no matter where you light your wick, these are sure to transport you right back to NI. Unfortunately, the candles can be hard to find, as stockists are limited, but they’re available online and at a display at Belfast International Airport, so if you’re flying in (or out) of the country, be sure to pick one up!

The 29 Best Souvenirs from Ireland (2024)

belfast tourist gifts

Looking for the best souvenirs in Ireland that are unique? You’re in the right place.

Souvenirs in Ireland have a lot of different themes – Celtic symbols like shamrocks or the trinity knot, comfy wool products, products related to Guinness Beer or Bailey’s Irish cream, products produced from family-owned Irish farms, and much more.

Aside from this, Ireland is a country of magical things- Irish folklore has created many myths and legends that star creatures such as leprechauns, elves and faeries, which have become iconic to Ireland.

galway

All of these themes (Celtic heritage, farming, mythology, cold weather, rolling greens and St. Patrick’s Day) create an abundance of very cool souvenirs that you can’t find anywhere else.

When I went to Ireland, there was so much to choose from in terms of souvenirs, and I came come with a very full suitcase of items for my daughter, myself and friends. Of the places I’ve been, Ireland is one of my favourite countries to find unique, earthy and authentic souvenirs.

Many of these souvenirs are hanging in our home, or used daily. There are even some that I didn’t manage to get my hands on, that are still on my wish list.

So, let’s jump in – the best, and most unique souvenirs from Ireland!

to the country and make great gifts.

1. Jewelry with Celtic symbols

Best for: Yourself, a friend or a family member Where to Buy: Souvenir stores around Ireland, or online

You will see a lot of Celtic symbols in Ireland, and there is very commonly jewelry made out of them – necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

There are a lot of different kinds of Celtic symbols, such as the Trinity, the Celtic knot and the Celtic cross.

belfast tourist gifts

Before Christianity came to Ireland, the country was mainly inhabited by Celtic people , and a lot of aspects of their culture have remained apart of Irish heritage. You can still visit fortresses in Ireland that were inhabited by the Celtics in the ancient times, such as the Staigue Fort .

The various types of jewelry with Celtic symbols were one of my favourite things to look at in Ireland. Although I can’t pretend to know a lot about Celtic heritage, I am fascinated by this ancient culture and the symbols.

My favourite Celtic symbol is the trinity, and I bought a necklace and earrings of it to bring home from Ireland.

Pro Tip: If you can’t find a Celtic symbol pendant you like in Ireland, there are also some beautiful ones made by small businesses on Etsy.

2. Wacky Woolies sheep gifts

Best for: kids, or anyone who would appreciate cartoonish, colourful sheep Where to Buy: most souvenir shops in Ireland, or online

Wacky Woolies are colourful cartoon sheep that you can find on Irish souvenirs and gifts. Sheep are a national symbol in Ireland , and its said that there are more sheep than people.

For this reason, you’ll see a lot of sheep on Irish souvenirs, such as fridge magnets and keychains. The Wacky Woolies are a fun, colourful sheep-related souvenir.

wacky woolies souvenir from Ireland

When I was in Ireland with my daughter, we both fell in love with the Wacky Woolies products and brought back a few different souvenirs – a ball, a kid’s travel pillow . They were all good quality and have still lasted to this day.

If you like the design but aren’t buying for a child, then I recommend a Wacky Woolies ceramic mug or a handbag.

Take a look at the different Wacky Woolies gifts here

3. Irish Knitwear

Best for: Anyone who lives in a colder climate Where to buy: Almost anywhere

Since Ireland is a country of sheep, Irish yarn and knitwear also makes a very good Irish souvenir.

You can find knitware in many shops in Ireland, especially if they sell souvenirs.

Did you know that there’s a sheep breed that is native to Ireland? Its called the Galway Sheep , and it comes from west Ireland in Galway county.

If you’re looking for something extra special, a small company called Aran Islands Knitwear makes sweaters, scarves, hats and other warm clothing from the wool of the Galway sheep.

They’re a third generation family-owned business from Inis Mór, which is one of the Aran Islands , which are off the coast of Galway.

They have three locations in Ireland are all on the west coast – in Galway city, Cong and Clifden. But lucky for you, you can also buy their products online from their website .

Wool is a sustainable clothing material used to make clothing for thousands of years, and sheep aren’t harmed from their wool being taken off.

Wool is fully biodegradable, but it’s also durable. Clothing made out of this quality wool can last decades.

Pro Tip: Don’t want to buy a ready-made sweater or scarf? You can also get Aran Islands yarn to make something yourself

4. A Claddagh ring

Best for: A friend, loved one, or romantic partner Where to Buy: Jewelry stores in Ireland, or online

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring with three symbols; a heart, a crown and two hands. The symbols represent love, loyalty and friendship.

The ring was designed in Claddagh Country, West Ireland in the 17th century and has been gifted by the Irish for hundreds of years. It’s commonly been given as an engagement ring in Ireland, but also has been a common family heirloom passed down through generations.

belfast tourist gifts

You can find Claddagh rings made with either white gold , yellow gold or Sterling Silver.

If you’d like to buy a Claddagh ring in Ireland, I recommend popping in to some jewelry stores to take a look as there are slightly different styles. Occasionally, there are emeralds or jewels in them. You can shop for them at the Irish store Claddagh Rings online (they ship to other countries.)

Claddagh rings aren’t a cheap souvenir – a sterling silver one will cost around $40 , while gold ones can cost hundreds of dollars each.

Pro Tip: Some say its bad luck to buy yourself a Claddagh ring, but that’s just a superstition. If you like the design, don’t hesitate to buy yourself one of these beautiful and symbolic rings. They make great, lifelong keepsakes and symbols of Ireland.

5. A fairy door

Best for: Children, or parents of children Where to Buy: Irish toy stores or online

You may notice that there are many “fairy trails” in Ireland. Children can go for a walk through a wooded area with fairy houses and doors attached to trees for them to spot during the walk.

Fairies have deep roots in Irish culture . They connected with traditional Irish beliefs in An Saol Eile (the Otherworld.)

belfast tourist gifts

If you visit Ireland with kids , I highly recommend going on a fairy walk. Its such a fun way to stimulate children’s imagination and creative thinking. I also brought home a fairy door as a souvenir from Ireland.

One of the most popular manufacturers of fairy doors in Ireland is the Irish Fairy Door Company . You can buy their products on their website , they ship worldwide. You can even register a fairy, which is very cute and might be fun for the child in your life.

Had trouble finding a fairy door in Ireland? Check out the Irish Fairy Door Company on Amazon

6. Irish skincare products

There are a few Irish skincare lines that use ingredients found in the Irish countryside – Moss of the Isles, and the Burren Perfumery.

The Burren Perfumery is a great place to visit if you’re in Doolin , and they make more than just perfume – its also a skincare line.

the burren perfumery skincare products

You can shop their products on-site, as you sip coffee – as they have a roastery right on-site.

I haven’t been to their store in person (yet) but I’ve ordered online. I like their products because the only scents they use are purely natural, and everything organic.

If you’re not going to be in Doolin, then you can also buy from the Burren Perfumery online . They ship worldwide for free for orders over 70€ .

7. Irish chocolates

Best for: anyone who likes chocolate (vegan chocolate included) Where to Buy: Irish chocolate factories, souvenir shops or supermarkets

Ireland’s farming industry produces often high quality dairy products; chocolate being one of them.

There are a few different popular Irish chocolate brands. One of the best ones is Beans and Goose, and they make chocolates and other treats that are sourced from ingredients in Ireland.

Irish chocolates as souvenirs from Ireland

If you happen to be on the Wild Atlantic Way, you should stop at Hazel Mountain Chocolate which is near the Burren. You can look through the window into their chocolate factory , and grab some treats to take home!

Chocolate Factory experiences are also offered by Wilde Irish Chocolates . Depending on where in Ireland you go, there are different chocolate factories, and companies.

If you buy chocolate in Ireland, be sure that its an Irish brand so that you can be sure its not something you can get at home.

Pro Tip: If you enjoy Cadbury, you should look for Irish brands of Cadbury chocolate bars. Cadbury is British but there is such a thing as Irish Cadbury chocolate as well that you can find in supermarkets.

8. Waterford Crystal

Best for: someone very special Where to Buy: at the Waterford factor, or online

Waterford crystal products have been produced in Ireland since 1793 , in the city of Waterford in southeast Ireland that they’re named after.

These crystal products are made with very high-quality craftsmanship and are famous for having a sparkle. They have even been admired by the Royal Family.

belfast tourist gifts

If you visit the city of Waterford, you can do a guided tour of the House of Waterford , which is the crystal factory where they make high-end products . At the end of the tour, you can visit the 12,000 square-foot store to shop for special gifts

Needless to say, Waterford Crystals aren’t a cheap Irish souvenir. Most items from the official Waterford website are $1,000 each. However, you can get much less expensive Waterford Crystal items on amazon.

Pro Tip: These days, a lot of the production of the Waterford Crystal has been outsourced to other countries and isn’t the same quality as when it was only made in Ireland. However, some of it ( over 750 tonnes of quality crysta l per year) are still produced in Waterford so just look for the ‘Made in Ireland’ label if this is important to you!

9. Irish Blessing Quotes

Best for: a good friend, or a close family member Where to Buy: souvenir shops around Ireland

Irish blessings are a traditional part of Irish culture , they’re found in songs, poems and stories. Irish blessings are positive and uplifting, expressing love, joy, friendship and hope.

The other nice thing about Irish blessings is you can find them on a lot of inexpensive Irish souvenirs, like a notepad, magnet or something you would hang in your home.

an Irish quote

Here is one of my personal favourite Irish blessings: “May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness come through your door.”

Irish blessings are just nice to hang up as positive reminders, and they make great souvenirs from Ireland because of their roots in Irish literature and culture.

You will see a variety of blessings on many different kinds of souvenirs, but you should check out items on Etsy even just to get an idea of what you’re looking for. You might find an Irish blessing quote that resonates with you the most.

10. Traditional Donegal tweed

Best for: Parents, in-laws, grandparents Where to Buy: Donegal, or Dublin

Donegal tweed is a fabric that has been woven in County Donegal, Northern Ireland for centuries . It’s known for being very warm, and is unique because of its speckled, uneven colours in the fabric.

All of the Donagal tweed fabrics are made from yarn produced from sheep that are raised in Donegal.

donegal tweed coats

Many Donegal tweed fabrics are made for men, often used to make the Irish wool flat cap, but it can be worn by women too, and people of all ages. (Such as these coats above that are aimed at women.)

Until the introduction of machines in the 1950s, all Donegal tweed was handwoven.

Not going to be in Northern Ireland? Check out The Donegal Shop in Dublin which also sells authentic Donegal tweed products.

In addition to hats and ties made of donegal tweed, they also sell aran knitwear and other unique Irish souvenirs.

Also – if you’re interested in the craft of hand weaving, I recommend visiting the Donegal Tweed Visitors Center (2.5 hours west of Belfast) to learn about this centuries-old craft. The visitor’s center is family-owned and welcomes visitors with open arms.

Pro Tip: Real Donegal tweed can be pretty pricey – a hat can cost around €85, a tie around €50. However, its very durable and something that will last a lifetime.

11. Items with words in Irish on them

Best for: Anyone who appreciates old Irish heritage Where to Buy: Souvenir stores in Ireland, or online

Irish is a Celtic language native to Ireland, and until the 1900s, was the first language of most people in Ireland.

Irish is still spoken as a first language by some people today but only about 2% of the population. If you go to the Aran Islands, you may hear people using Irish to communicate.

mugs with irish words

You can get T-shirts, magnets, notebooks and all kinds of items that have Irish words on them.

Things with Irish printed on them instead of English is something unique to Ireland that you can only get there, so I recommend this if you’re looking for something traditionally Irish.

Pro Tip: I like for example, this bag that says teaglach which means ‘family.’

12. Shamrock shaped gifts

Best for: Anyone Where to Buy: Irish souvenir stores

It’s no doubt that when you think of Ireland, one image that comes to mind is probably a shamrock.

The word shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg which means ‘little clover.’

belfast tourist gifts

The shamrock was originally used as a religious symbol when Christianity was brought to Ireland, (Saint Patrick used to describe the Holy Trinity.)

Nowadays though, the shamrock is seen as a symbol of luck, of Saint Patrick’s Day and of Ireland. What better place to get St. Patrick’s Day stuff than from Ireland, the country of origin?

13. Bailey’s Irish Cream

Best for: someone who likes Bailey’s Where to Buy: Molloys in Dublin, or online

The Bailey’s Irish Cream drink was created in 1974 and was the first Irish cream on the market.

Its a very popular drink and its shipped worldwide, so you’re probably used to seeing it everywhere. However, you can get a much larger variety of Bailey’s products in Ireland.

You can buy a variety of different Bailey’s products from:

  • Molloys (a Dublin-based liquor store with several locations around the country)
  • the Bailey’s online store.

14. Traditional Irish music souvenirs

Best for: someone musically inclined Where to Buy: music retailers in Ireland, or online

Celtic music has deep roots in Irish culture; common instruments are the drum (called a bodhrán), a Celtic harp, fiddle and flute.

Some Celtic music is slower, and other times its more upbeat and you can dance to it. The slower Celtic tunes are calming to listen to, can ease stress and promote relaxation. Here is an example of it that you can listen to it on Youtube.

belfast tourist gifts

The main music store in Dublin is called Music Minds and you can find it right downtown, just over the river from the legendary Temple Bar. You can also check out McNeela Music which is Ireland based but ships worldwide.

Both of these places are good places to get professional, high-quality Celtic musical instruments.

Check out Celtic traditional instruments here

15. Irish Christmas Ornaments

Best for: Anyone who celebrates Christmas Where to Buy: church gift shops, souvenir stores, and online

Being a country with a Christian heritage going back almost 1000 years, Christmas is an important holiday in Ireland.

Irish Christmas ornaments can have Celtic symbols, the Claddaugh or even commonly shamrock. Some even have Irish blessings on them.

belfast tourist gifts

The Skellig House makes this simple Bless This House ornament for the Christmas tree, and its handcrafted in Ireland. Carollis Irish Gifts has a larger selection on their website.

Some people get a Christmas ornament home from every country they visit, but I don’t do this personally.

However, Irish souvenirs in particular suit the Christmas tree well, with the white and sparkly green. My daughter and I bought the “peace angel” from the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. We love the angel with the shamrock and admire it on the tree every year!

Check out more Irish Christmas ornaments here

16. Irish cheese

Best for: anyone who isn’t vegan or lactose intolerant Where to Buy: grocery stores, and farmer’s markets

One of the things Ireland is most known for is its farming. The way the animals graze on fresh grass has a huge impact on the quality of the cheese.

Irish cheeses include strong cheddars (Hegarty’s and Mount Leinster) and goudas.

Irish cheese souvenir from ireland

Irish gouda cheese can be made with either cow’s milk (Coolea brand) or sheep’s milk (Kileen.)

It’s important to know that many countries prohibit you from bringing dairy products into the country, so you should check the rules of your country about what you’re allowed to bring back.

If bringing back a block of Irish cheese isn’t feasible, you could also consider a taste of Ireland gift box. If you can swing it, butter would be a good souvenir from Ireland too. (There’s even a butter museum in Cork .) However, this may not work depending on how far you’ve travelled.

Get your Taste of Ireland Gift box (with Irish cheese) here

Pro Tip: Looking for vegan Irish cheese? You have your pick, because Ireland has become much more vegan friendly over the years. Check out The Flying Squirrel Cheese , or the Green Goddess Fromagerie which make realistic-looking (and tasting) Irish cheddar. These vegan cheeses can make a great gift from Ireland for someone else, or yourself. (Plus, bringing them back home isn’t usually a problem since there’s no dairy in it!)

17. Game of Thrones souvenirs

Best for: A Game of Thrones fan Where to Buy: Game of Thrones studio shop, or online

A large part of Game of Thrones was filmed in Northern Ireland , and the series employed quite a few Irish actors as well.

Not only can you visit a lot of the sets that were used in the TV series, but they have special GOT merchandise that is only sold there.

belfast tourist gifts

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, I’d recommend doing the Studio Tour in Northern Ireland. It has the largest Game of Thrones merchandise store in the world -perfect place to get souvenirs of this amazing TV show.

At the studio tour gift shop, you can find Game of Thrones souvenirs that you can’t buy anywhere else, so its pretty special if you’re a GOT fan.

Pro Tip: Not heading to Northern Ireland? Zavvi in Ireland also makes unique Game of Thrones souvenirs and they ship worldwide.

18. An Irish wishing stone

Best for: a friend, or anyone who likes the colour green Where to Buy: Irish souvenir shops, or online

Irish wishing stones are made of connemarra marble , which is found on the West Coast of Ireland, in the town of Connemarra. Connemarrra marble is considered to be the Irish gemstone, and has beautiful swirly patterns.

Connemarra marble has deep roots in Ireland’s history , having been used for centuries as a means of exchange. Each stone is unique from all the others, so when you buy it, you know that there is no other stone exactly like it.

belfast tourist gifts

They are sometimes called wishing stones , other times worry stones, and good luck stones. You can get the one that fits best what you want.

If a luck or wishing stone isn’t for you, you can also get jewelry made of connemarra marble. You can get a connemarra marble claddaugh ring , or a variety of other jewelry sold by Connemara Marble official website.

19. Irish ‘crisps’ (chips)

Best for: Anyone Where to Buy: grocery stores and convenience stores in Ireland, or online

Like in England, the Irish use the word ‘crisps’ for what we would call ‘chips’ in North America.

Hunky Dory is the most popular chip brand in Ireland, and they make crinkle-cut chips of a variety of flavours – salt and vinegar, Buffalo, sour cream and onion, and much more.

belfast tourist gifts

You can find these crips in most supermarkets. Ireland has a handful of supermarket chains that you could check in; Aldi, Tesco, Supervalu and Lidl.

You don’t have to spend too long in Ireland before figuring out that they’re a country of tea-lovers. An afternoon ‘cuppa’ is enjoyed by many of the Irish, often with scones, biscuits or a slice of cake.

Irish teas are usually made with a base of assam black tea , and can be bought in tea bags or in loose-leaf form.

belfast tourist gifts

You may heard of English Breakfast Tea, but there is also an Irish Breakfast Tea , which is stronger-tasting and red in colour.

When buying Irish tea as a souvenir, try to stick to an Irish tea brand. The most popular Irish tea blend is Barry’s which has been produced since 1901.

Other tea brands in Ireland are:

  • Bewley’s
  • Robert Roberts
  • Nambarrie’s (Northern Ireland)
  • Thompson’s Punjana (Northern Ireland)

You can find these in Irish supermarkets or souvenir stores. If you miss it, you can also find it online or on Amazon.

22. Irish Soda Bread

Best for: Anyone who eats bread (that isn’t vegan or lactose intolerant) Where to Buy: Irish bakeries and supermarkets

A fresh loaf of bread is always appreciated as a gift or something to bring home. Irish soda bread is traditionally made with flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk and has a longstanding history in Ireland.

In the famine years (known as An Gorta Mor in Irish) this soda bread was often the only thing people had on their table.

belfast tourist gifts

You can find soda bread in historic food markets, (such as the Milk Market in Limerick ) or Irish bakeries.

Be sure to freeze it when you get home if you aren’t going to eat it within a few days. You can eat it simply with butter, or toasted with butter and jam. It also pairs well with soups and stews.

Unlike fruit , meat or dairy products, bringing bread into other countries is not usually an issue.

Not enough room in your suitcase? Grab this Irish soda bread mix to make your own at home !

23. A bottle of Irish whiskey

Best for: Someone who drinks or appreciates whiskey Where to Buy: Irish liquor stores, supermarket or Dublin airport

Whiskey is a uniquely Irish drink that has been produced since the Middle Ages. The word ‘whiskey’ comes from the Irish word uisce beatha , which means “water of life.”

Although whiskey is exported worldwide and can be found anywhere, you should look for Jameson 12 Distillery Reserve which can only be bought in Ireland.

belfast tourist gifts

Jameson 12 Distillery Reserve can be found at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork or the Old Bow Street Distillery in Dublin.

24. Irish sea moss

Irish sea moss has a long history in Ireland. It can be eaten dehydrated, or in gummy form , or used in cosmetics, such as creams and shampoos.

belfast tourist gifts

Generally considered to be a health food product, Irish sea moss has good source of vitamins and minerals. Read about the pros and cons of taking sea moss here .

There’s no way we could discuss Irish souvenirs without mentioning leprechauns. Leprechauns are creatures from Irish folklore ; they are a fairy in the form of a man said to be living in the wilderness.

In fact, the word “leprechaun” is a Celtic word luchorpán which means “small body.”

belfast tourist gifts

In Irish legends, leprechauns are not necessarily ‘good’ characters. They are greedy and mischievous. But in the modern day, they’ve turned into an important symbol of Ireland and of St. Patrick’s Day.

As you stroll the streets of Dublin, you’ll notice that the residents of the city have a wonderfully colorful tradition: the beautiful Georgian front doors of Dublin’s homes tend to be extremely colorful!

There’s a long history behind why , but today, the doors are an iconic symbol of Dublin, and images of them make excellent souvenirs from Ireland, whether that’s in the form of a photo, a painting, or even a magnet!

Personally, we tend to be partial to food-centered souvenirs on our travels, as they make it so easy to extend a trip by bringing part of a destination home with us.

These foodie souvenirs from Ireland are perfect for bringing a taste of Ireland home!

Irish Whiskey

Whether you go for the ever-famous Jameson whiskey (you can even pick some up after touring the distillery, if you’d like!) or for one of Ireland’s more niche whiskey producers, whiskey lovers will find plenty of opportunity to stock up on local Irish whiskey!

Glass of whiskey being poured into a highball glass holding ice cubes. Whiskey is one of the best things to buy in Ireland

Brown Bread

Not all of Ireland’s delicious food can be easily transported home–but Irish brown bread (also known as Irish soda bread) easily can be.

Irish Chocolate

There is some delicious artisanal chocolate that is made in Ireland… but Dublin is also the home of Cadbury, and many Cadbury connoisseurs swear that the chocolate is just a bit tastier when purchased in Ireland!

Irish cheeses–and dairy products in general–are some of the absolute best on the planet.

If you’re a fan of Irish cheese, consider picking up a block (or several) during your trip to Ireland.

Fall in love with Irish tea during your trip to the Emerald Isle? Consider picking some up to bring home!

Irish Cookbook

Irish food is absolutely delicious–if you fall in love with it on your trip to the Emerald Isle as much as we have, consider bringing a taste of Ireland home with you in the form of an Irish cookbook!

If your idea of the perfect souvenir is something you can wear, these Ireland souvenirs might be for you.

Claddagh Ring

Dating to the 17th century, Irish Claddagh rings are one of the most popular things to buy in Ireland and carry symbolism that reaches beyond a fond memory of a trip.

Wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing away from your body to symbolize that you’re single, on your right hand with the heart facing inward to symbolize that you’re in a relationship, and on your left hand with the heart facing out to show that you’re engaged.

Finally, if you’re married, the ring is worn as a wedding band, on the left hand with the heart facing inward.

However you wear your Claddagh ring, there’s no doubt that it is an especially meaningful purchase when in Ireland where the tradition originated–and especially if you’re taking a romantic trip with your partner!

Other Silver Jewelry

If a Claddagh ring isn’t your style, Ireland still has a wide variety of beautiful jewelry to shop for. The country is especially known for its gorgeous silver pieces.

Aran Sweater

An Aran wool sweater is one of the most popular and iconic souvenirs from Ireland, and is definitely a beautiful one!

The craft hails from the Aran Islands, located a short ferry ride away from Doolin (near the Cliffs of Moher), but even if you don’t make it out to the islands, the sweaters are easy to find–you can find them for sale all over the country.

Other Wool Items to Wear

Want a piece of Aran wool to wear but don’t want a sweater? Hats, scarves, and gloves are also great options.

Donegal Tweed

Hailing from County Donegal, Donegal tweed is absolutely beautiful and makes for a lovely souvenir from Ireland.

Connemara Marble

Ireland’s famous Connemara marble is gorgeous and tends to have a distinct green hue–if you pass by the region of Connemara, a small piece of marble makes for an excellent (and easy to carry home) Irish souvenir!

Wool Blanket

If you love the idea of shopping for Irish wool but don’t like to wear it, consider picking up a thick wool blanket as one of your souvenirs from Ireland.

Love the idea of Irish wool, but prefer to knit a piece yourself?

Consider picking up some local yarn to bring home from Ireland!

Books About Ireland

One of my favorite things about traveling in English-speaking countries is the ease of picking up unique books that I may never come across shopping at home.

From books containing famous Irish quotes to little-known memoirs, there’s plenty to love about browsing bookshops in Ireland.

Bibliophiles will find plenty of literary Ireland souvenirs to choose from, and while you can’t go wrong with beautiful copies of works by famous Irish authors like Oscar Wilde and James Joyce, consider also picking up a book on local Irish history or culture!

If you have little ones in your life, Irish children’s books also make wonderful gifts to bring home from Ireland.

Only have a few Euro or a tiny bit of luggage space to spare as you go shopping in Ireland?

These easy, fun Ireland souvenirs might be for you!

Magnets are one of the most popular souvenirs to collect around the world: they’re inexpensive, easy to find, and lots of fun to pick out!

I bought a fun magnet with an Irish sheep on it during our first trip to Ireland years ago, and it still makes me smile whenever I see it.

Collection of magnets in Ireland--a row of matching leprechaun magnets on top of a row of matching sheep magnets

While you can buy an artisanal ceramic mug in Ireland as we mentioned above, there are also plenty of inexpensive-but-fun touristy mugs for sale around Ireland that can make a great addition to your collection!

Postcards are the ultimate combination of inexpensive, easy to pack, and easily personalized, making them one of the best budget souvenirs from Ireland!

They tend to run .50 to 1 Euro each, but if you’re up to spending an extra couple Euro on top of that, consider filling a postcard out with your memories of the day right then and there–and then sending it to yourself so you can relive your Ireland memories as you return home.

Consider shipping fragile items home.

If you buy something that is particularly fragile, heavy, or potentially regulated, it’s definitely worth at least inquiring about the cost of shipping–many small businesses and artisans in Ireland are able and willing to ship their goods abroad.

Have a plan for what Ireland souvenirs you’d like to purchase before arriving.

There’s no need to stick to your plan exactly, of course–shopping spontaneously can be part of the fun of travel–but having a general idea of what you want to look for when shopping in Ireland can help add structure to your browsing, and in some cases, help limit indecisiveness (it definitely does for me!).

Consider quality over quantity.

When deciding what to bring home from Ireland, think about quality over quantity. It’s incredibly easy to end up buying more Irish souvenirs than you planned, and end up with more knick-knacks than you really need.

In our experience, it’s much better to buy 1-2 truly memorable souvenirs than a whole slew of less memorable ones!

Be prepared to pay steep prices for handmade goods.

For example, a truly handmade Aran sweater can easily be a couple hundred Euro–but if you’re willing to compromise with a machine-knit one as you weigh what to buy in Ireland, the prices will certainly drop.

Check on transportation regulations.

For the vast majority of these souvenirs from Ireland, there is absolutely no issue with bringing them back yourself in your checked luggage–but for food items, be sure to double-check any necessary regulations before packing up to leave.

For Americans like us,  check the TSA regulations here .

Note the place and date of purchase on your souvenirs from Ireland.

You may find it easy to remember when and where you purchased your beautiful souvenirs from Ireland now–but give it a decade or three, and you may be very glad you noted the place and year of purchase with the item!

We tend to write the info on the bottom of home decor pieces or Christmas ornaments and love the tradition of it–and, for example, we’ll definitely never forget what year we purchased our shamrock ornament in Waterford because of it.

… and leave extra space in your bag!

It’s definitely worth leaving a couple of extra outfits or gadgets at home in order to make sure you have room in your bag for a few of the best souvenirs from Ireland!

About Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

I’ve been to Ireland twice and I stand by all the souvenirs suggested here. The sweaters make EXCELLENT holiday or birthday gifts.

So glad you agree! The sweaters are incredible.

Brilliant ideas here! I love Butler’s Irish chocolate, and a visit to a Butler’s chocolate cafe (lots of them in Dublin) is one of my favourite/favorite things to do. Coffee, delicious chocolate and a chance to pick up some chocolate gifts is a great way to refuel for more sightseeing!

Sounds absolutely lovely!

I totally love Butler Chocolates and once I discovered them, tried to find them wherever I went. We found one near our hotel in Cork.

As for pottery, Nicholas Mosse is beautiful, sturdy pottery that can go dishwasher to table. Gorgeous sets in various patterns and multiple size bowls, table settings and serving platters. You can find in most pottery stores, especially in the Dublin area. Most shops will ship.

Totally love all your suggestions. However I couldn’t help but notice the lack of suggestions for buying for children. In my case it is grandchildren. I like the idea of sharing with them things / history of where I have traveled. Again thank you for sharing. Nan

Thanks, Nancy!

We don’t have many children in our lives at the moment, so it’s not in the forefront of our minds. You can certainly get wool products for children though (toys and clothing).

Buying ornaments for children is a great way to begin or add to a Christmas collection that they can have throughout their lives. Love your article and find it very helpful in planning our trip to Ireland this Fall.

I still have many of the ornaments my parents and grandparents bought for me over the years! They do make wonderful souvenirs. :-)

Hope you have a fantastic trip to Ireland!

trip to Ireland!

Booking your next trip back would be the perfect souvenir! :-)

Great ideas–going to Ireland in Sept/23 on a cruise ship. One day in port in Cork and we have decided to do the Waterford Tour. Looking forward to returning to this beautiful country after a leave of over 20 years!

Thanks, Barbara! Hope you have a wonderful time in Ireland!

We loved the Waterford tour–very cool experience. :-)

My family has a tradition that wherever they travel they buy a t-shirt specific to the country. I did not see any suggestions or comments for t-shirts. Would they be available at gift shops?

Yes, you’ll find plenty of t-shirts available in any of the standard souvenir shops! :-)

Where would you suggest finding original art from local artists? I always look for pen and ink drawings or paintings of landmarks like cathedrals or castles.

You’ll find art galleries in many of the towns with a heavy tourism presence, that would be my first stop! Sometimes individual attractions like churches or castles will have art available in their gift shops, too. :-)
