Safari pick-up from watamu or malindi to tsavo east for one day, watamu to tsavo east.

05.00 AM – You will be picked up from Watamu/Malindi early morning and travel along the Gede to Sala road to Tsavo East National Park for the natural wildlife and scenic tour. Enter the park through the Sala gate and embark on tour drives. You will drive through the Aruba Dam, and Kanderi areas to observe wildlife and birdlife, which they could be found during the dry season. Lunch will be served at a restaurant slightly outside the park. After a short rest, there will be an extended game drive. You will leave Tsavo East late in the afternoon, and arrive at your Watamu or Malindi beach hotel late in the evening.18:30-7:00 – Arrival and drop-off at your sea resort.

Safari Malindi

Perhaps a little less known that Kenya’s Mombasa for beach vacations , Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts are a great choice for a Kenya beach vacation.

Voted the cleanest town in Kenya, Malindi is well served with restaurants, hotels and cafés. With the coral reefs having been declared the Malindi Marine National Park this is a great place for snorkelling and diving, as well as game fishing and surfing.

In the 14th century Malindi was an important Swahili settlement and it became one of the few places on the east coast to welcome the Portuguese. Today you can still see the stone cross erected by Vasco da Gama in January 1499 and the small Portuguese church nearby.

It is not only Portuguese sailors who are welcome these days, but a great many tourists who are drawn to its lovely long beaches. As a result, it has something of a resort atmosphere but this is pleasantly mixed with the earthiness of an African centre. Cotton and sisal production are still major earners, as is fishing.

“The Golden Mile”

Historically, Malindi dates back to the mixture 9th Century,with Arab occupation from the 13th Century onwards.

It has been a rich trade center with the near East and this influence can be seen characterized in its Arabic architecture. It is now a popular beach resort and the 1980s brought in a lot of Italian investment with many building their summer villas here, thus the recent Italian influence in the restaurants and shops.

Now a historical site situated 18km south of Malindi, this was a flourishing Arab town between the 14th and 17th centuries before being mysteriously abandoned by its inhabitants.

The snorkeling and scuba-diving opportunities are not to be missed.

Nature abounds in Watamu. If it's not the incredible variety of birdlife, it's the monkey population, making their rounds of the coast. The nights are filled with the sounds of cicadas, bush babies and other night creatures. All over Watamu there is the opportunity to discover more about the local wildlife. There are so many things you can do while in Watamu, that enjoying a relaxing lie-on-the-beach holiday can be difficult!

Snorkeling in Watamu 

Exceptional snorkeling and diving conditions in Watamu Marine National Park allow all visitors easy access to the spectacular undersea life. Whether a newcomer to the sea, or an experienced diver, you'll be able to find some exciting things to do.

The Marine Park is about 5 miles from North to South and several hundred meters - up to a kilometer - from the shore to the fringing reefs. Snorkeling conditions are ideal at low tide, and especially good at spring low tide.

The North part is where the main hotels are situated and during high season it is the main mooring spot for fishing, diving and leisure boats. Here you find the Larder and Turtle reef and the Pothole.

The central part is the main Coral Gardens, where there is a string of buoys where snorkeling boat operators can tie up, while the snorkelers go snorkeling.

The South end of the park is by the mouth of Mida Creek. These waters can be treacherous due to the tidal wash from the creek, both in and out. However, here is where the famous Rock Cod Caves are. They used to have some resident Grouper - huge 200lb fish that would look you in the eyes and dare you any closer. However, it seems they have sadly been poached. In order to snorkel here you must get permission from the Park Warden in writing, and specify when you intend to snorkel there. Best times are during neap tides at low tide.

The main coral gardens are concentrated in a small, 500m long area. There are thousands of fish here - some of the boat operators feed the fish! - and you will not be disappointed, but explore beyond this, and you will find quieter waters with unusual fish - especially the shy ones that do not like the commotion around all the glass-bottomed boats! If you are really lucky, you may see a turtle, a guitarfish (huge - up to 9 feet long!), or a large grouper

Watamu's beach has a reputation for being quiet. So quiet, in fact, you are often not within a kilometer of the nearest sunbather or other beach walkers. Although it may seem a little busy at its northern end, the four and a half miles of pristine, white, sandy beach is, for the most part, deserted.

During the migratory months - November through to March - many birds can be found walking the beach and feeding in the shallows. At low tide, and especially spring low tide, a number of eroded corals protrude from the surface. Resembling giant Swiss cheeses - more the holes than the cheese - these are home to innumerable fascinating flora and fauna of the sea.

Little moray eels, catfish, octopus and lionfish can all be found preying on the lesser creatures, baby fish and plants. A walk to the very mouth of Mida Creek at low tide is usually rewarded with some little gem or other since it is there that the largest collection of these eroded reefs is situated.

These corals can be very slippery, and some have barnacles growing on them so wear a good pair of beach shoes. The sand can get pretty hot too!

What to do at Mida Creek

Mida Creek is a large mangrove-lined creek, and is part of the Mida Creek Marine Reserve managed by Kenya Wildlife Service. There are lots of things to do at the creek.

Here are some suggestions:

Birdwatching

The Mida birdlife is spectacular. There are 51 species listed in East Africa Birds, although this is by no means an authoritative list. To reach the head of the creek, the best area for bird watching, leave the Mombasa-Malindi road opposite the entrance to the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Driving Trail and make your way down to the creek's shores. The best time for this is the incoming tide, when all creatures are busy feeding. A scope is very useful.

Likely to see:

Crab Plovers, curlews, sandpipers, stints, terns, spoonbills, flamingos and others.

For a different viewpoint, get hold of a small motorboat and float around the creek.

Explore the Mangrove Forest

Mida is surrounded by mangrove forest, an unusual habitat. The trees have spectacular looking root systems that thrive on the tidal variations. The mangrove forest consists of a few species of salt-tolerant evergreens. Mangroves protect the soft sediment shorelines from erosion, and provide a home for crustacean and molluscs, birds and worms during low tide, and hundreds of species of fish feeding during high tide.

The mangroves are used as nurseries for many fish species, too, and although murky, snorkeling can be rewarded by a sighting of perfectly-formed mini-tropical fish such as a 1 inch long lionfish.

There is an old walkway that may or may not have been rehabilitated on Sudi Island, where there are some sheltered picnic tables. The walk takes you through a few hundred meters of mangrove forest, and is very pretty. Please book your visit to Sudi in advance at the Kenya Wildlife Service office, or ask your hotel to arrange it for you. You'll need to find a boat operator to take you too.

Another visit is to one of the villages on Kirepwe Island. This village is a fascinating insight into the subsistence lifestyle of these people; a fishing and coconut palm economy. Again, ask your hotel to arrange a visit.

Dhows and Sundowners on Mida Creek

A few places arrange sundowners on a large dhow that sails up the creek, and motors back as the sun sets over the mangroves. Smaller dhows are also operated by individuals from Watamu. Visit the hairdresser in the village and enquire about Saidi's dhow.

Gede Ruins and Kipepeo Project

Gede Ruins is a 12th Century Swahili village that was mysteriously abandoned some 600 years ago due to unknown causes. It is now a National Museum, and the ruins are heavily overgrown with beautiful indigenous forest trees, baobabs and tamarind. 

Well worth a walk and a visit. Look out for Syke's Monkeys, and the Golden Ramped Elephant Shrew can also be seen here. A quiet, careful look in some of the old wells can turn out the odd owl, too.

Kipepeo Butterfly Project

Right at the entrance to Gede Ruins is the Kipepeo Butterfly Project. This innovative project is aimed at giving the forest edge communities opportunities to get an income directly from the forest, by live breeding the unique butterflies of the Arabuko-Sokoke forest, and sending them to live butterfly display centers around the world.

The project has led to a large increase in household incomes in those households participating in the project, and since butterflies are short-lived and hard to breed abroad, the market is quite reliable

What to do in the Arabuko-Sokoke forest 

With over 400 square kilometers and over 200 species of birds, there's plenty for the nature enthusiast to do here.

With 5 globally threatened bird species, as well as hundreds of others; the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is a birdwatcher's paradise. The open brachistegia woodland is ideal for stalking feeding parties of birds during the day, while walks in the dense cynometra forest at night are arranged to see the tiny Sokoke scoops owl.

There are many kilometers of track in the forest, ideal for walking. For added excitement there is a resident herd of elephant, some buffalo and probably some large cats too.

For the fit and adventurous a mountain bike ride in the forest is really exhilarating. Conditions can be tough, though, since many roads are very very sandy.

A popular pastime among the Watamu residents a couple of established routes are used for evening (and morning) runs, and you're bound to find someone who is your level and willing to go for a run!

Overnighting

There are possibilities for camping in the forest, or even overnight in the tree-house. Please enquire at the Visitors Centre at the Forest Station.

Malindi - A Historical Kenyan coastal town 

Malindi is just over 25kms from Watamu, and may be reached easily via the Mombasa-Malindi road, either by matatu, taxi or self-driven. You may need to go there in order to book air and bus tickets to Nairobi, Mombasa or Lamu, so why not explore a bit while you're there.

Malindi is a much larger place than Watamu, and as a result the beaches tend to be more crowded, especially with hawkers and beach boys and girls. Malindi is suitable mainly for four things:

• Historical places of interest
• Wining and dining

For both everyday needs, such as groceries and booze and occasional luxury items, Malindi may have things not available in Watamu, since most of the supermarkets have a wider range of goods on offer.

There are several supermarkets on Lamu Road, the main road that runs parallel to the beach heading North, including an Italian one with lots of Mediterranean goodies - at a price, of course!!

Malindi is well known for its Halwa, and the Malindi Halwa Shop is one street behind the Town Square, a triangular roundabout next to the local District Commissioner's Offices.

You can also find the ubiquitous curios in a variety of different sorts of establishments, from up market shops selling high value work, to the Malindi Curio Dealers Association, a ramshackle collection of semi-permanent kiosks where you can find many bargains.

Note: Visitors should observe wildlife and conservation ethics and DO NOT buy seashells, corals or wood carvings that are made with endangered local hardwoods. 

Historical Places of interest:

Vasco da Gamas Pillar, on the beach in the middle of Malinidi's long coastal front, is a monument to where Vasco da Gama first set foot in modern-day Kenya in 1498. There is also a Portuguese church nearby.

Wining and dining:

Malindi really comes into its own when you have exhausted Watamu's eating joints after a few days. Top of anyone's list should be a visit to The Old Man and the Sea a wonderful seafood oriented restaurant on the seafront. A number of Italian restaurants serve the usual fare of pizzas and pasta, and there are numerous excellent Swahili cafeterias in the town itself that make a great change from exported foreign foods.

Most of the action is on the Northern side of the town, along Lamu Road. There are a number of bars of varying degrees of popularity where you can while away the afternoon over a cold Tusker. However, at some places you will be harassed by commercial sex workers, especially if you are a single man, or a group of men! You have been warned!! For little or no hassle, choose a place with a vigilant watchman, like Palm Garden. On the other end of the scale, Star and Garter can be quite calm during the day, and has pool tables too.

As the afternoon fades, and evening approaches, Malindi seems to die out and everywhere empties out. This is because things do not really get going until much later - Mediterranean style!

Of the remaining Nightclubs - the biggest, Stardust, having shut down sometime last year - Club 28 is almost always climax by midnight, and carries on until dawn, even on weekdays in the low season. This is not a club for the fainthearted, and as either a male or female visitor expects to be "chatted up" more times than in the whole of the past year!! Other clubs and discos are only open in the high season, such as Fermentos, a reputed hang-out of Naomi Campbell when she was still dating an Italian with a house here. Prices match too! Other clubs are associated with the hotels in which they take place.

Other attractions, both night and day, include a couple of Casinos, snake parks, a falconry, the fish market, dhow trips, Malindi Marine National Park (stick with Watamu instead!) and plenty of pharmacies, doctors, normal shops and car hire companies.

Safari In Kenya: Everything You Need to Know About Doing A Safari In The Tsavo East National Park

Like every twenty-something I grew up watching a bit too much Lion King (or was that just me?), which made going on a safari a long-standing item on my travel bucket list.

I finally fulfilled this  African  dream when I went to Kenya and did a safari in the Tsavo East National Park. This was without a doubt one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Things to know before going on a safari in Kenya

Even if you’re an experienced traveller, going for a safari in Africa isn’t quite like going on any other trip. There are some things you need to do before you go.

Check if you have all the necessary vaccines – Arguably you should do this before every trip, but for most destinations you will usually be up to date.

Before a trip to Kenya you should pop by your local pharmacy and see what they recommend vaccine-wise.

Visit a pharmacy or doctor to get your anti-malaria treatment you want (if any) – I’m not a doctor and can’t advise you, so make sure to visit a doctor or local pharmacy and ask about the different types of malaria treatment you can get.

Some parts of Kenya aren’t affected by malaria, and some travellers decide to not take malaria tablets to avoid the side effects as they feel the risk to catch it is very low. Personally, I took Malarone for my trip.

Check the weather forecast – Generally speaking, the weather in Kenya is always very hot. However it does occasionally rain, so you will want to check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly.

What to pack for a safari in Kenya

I listed below some items you definitely don’t want to forget before your safari in Kenya, and some suggestions for safari appropriate clothing.

Mosquito repellent – Unless you want to spend the day swatting mosquitos away, make sure to bring yourself some mosquito repellent!

Sunblock – The African sun is very intense, you don’t want to get sunburnt and ruin your trip.

Loose and long sleeved outfits – These are the best outfits for such hot climates, since it keeps things breezy and in the shade.

Wide-rim hat – Like the above points, you want to protect yourself from the sun.

Sunglasses – Don’t forget them, there’s nothing worst than squinting all day while trying to watch the horizon under the midday sun.

Binoculars – As good as your eyesight can be, it won’t be good enough to spot animals that are very far away. Bring one of these with you to ensure you can see animals that you can’t get closer to.

About the Tsavo East National Park

With its 13,000+ kilometres squared, the Tsavo East National Park is one of the largest and oldest parks in Kenya. Access to the park costs 65 USD for adults and 30 USD for children.

There are three entry gates to the park and once inside you can only drive on the set paths. Bush driving isn’t allowed so as to not disturb the wildlife.

In the Tsavo you can see a wide variety of wildlife, from the “ Big Five ” to smaller mammals and many African birds . Its rich biodiversity is what makes it such a popular destination for safaris.

How to get to the Tsavo East National Park

We were staying in Malindi before heading to the Tsavo East National Park. From Malindi it is approximately a 4-hour car drive depending on the road conditions.

The road is paved for a short section beyond Malindi, with the rest of it being a dirt road,   which takes considerably longer to drive on.

If you are travelling to the Tsavo from further away (eg. Nairobi) you can fly to one of the small airstrips that are close to the park. You can usually organise these with the camp or lodge that you are staying at.

On our drive back to Malindi after the safari we spotted lots of early morning jeeps that were doing a day trip safari to the Tsavo East National Park from Malindi. While this is doable, I don’t particularly recommend it.

You would end up spending 8 hours in the jeep just to get there and back, plus all the time you will spend in the Tsavo East National Park doing the safari.

Doing a safari is a once in a lifetime experience, you want to be fresh for it!

Also, staying in a lodge or camp in the park (or close to it) is also a unique experience, you don’t want to miss out on it!

Where to stay during your Kenyan safari

I’ve listed below some options of camps in and around the Tsavo East National Park that you can stay at for your safari for every budget.

Budget: Sagala Lodge – If you want to have a safari lodge experience without breaking the bank, Sagala Lodge is a great place to do so.

This affordable camp might be basic compared to some of the more luxurious ones, but it comes with a pool, delicious food, spacious rooms and a great location for an early morning safari. Can’t ask for much more really!

Our safari in the Tsavo East National Park

After a long afternoon of driving we arrived at the Swara Osteria Camp in the evening, where we were greeted by Maasai with refreshing drinks and towels.

We were also greeted by the most amazing starry sky, since the power generators don’t kick in till later at night. We got to sit around the pool and the fire and enjoy the star and candle lit atmosphere.

Before having dinner we decided to head out for a night safari, which was incredible. Driving around the savannah under the stars, surrounded by all the sounds of animals getting ready for the night was magical.

We didn’t see big cats, which we were hoping to see as they usually come out to hunt at night, but we did see a group of elephants with their babies. We also saw a rabbit, who ran away as soon as we approached.

Can’t lie when I say it was pretty unexpected.

The morning after we woke up at 5am, and had an awesome breakfast while watching the sunrise over the river in front of our camp.

We set off nice and early, so that we could have a full day searching for animals and watch the sunrise over the savannah.

I had a very Lion King moment when the big red sun rose in all its beauty. My safari companions didn’t appreciate my singing moment as much.

We had an adventure packed day, featuring mostly a lot of driving, interrupted very often by a yell of “I see something!” or “Look there ahead!”, which was usually an animal, but sometimes just turned out to be a funny shaped rock.

Seeing our first elephant in daylight was quite the encounter. Especially because our first elephant encounter was a mother with her cub!

After that we saw lots of elephants, playing in muddy rivers or simply walking around. One even crossed the road right in front of us and almost charged at our land rover!

At one point we got to a traffic jam in the road, definitely not what I was expecting in the middle of the savannah!

There were three or four cars parked on the side of the road. We were wondering what they were doing when our guide explained they had spotted lions.

I got super excited about this. The lions were resting in the shade under some bushes, but we saw them move around and walk from one to the other. I can happily say I saw Simba. Although I still need to find Pride Rock.

After that we saw an abundance of zebras, antelopes, monkeys and giraffes. Driving along the river our guide told us to keep an eye out for hippos. However this is really hard for those with an untrained eye.

We stopped a few times with the driver pointing out at what looked like shallow rocks, but when you look at it long enough realise it’s moving and it’s a hippo!

We got to get out of the car at a “Hippo Point”, where you could walk down to the river to get a closer look at the hippos. I was a bit scared since hippos seem placid, but they’re actually very dangerous!

On return from the safari we went on a sunset walk along the river, accompanied by the Maasai from our camp. When compared to driving, walking in the savannah was an even more magical experience.

Especially a since we were accompanied by expert Maasai, who were pointing out all the traces of animals and told us stories of the area.

Malindi, Kenya | Facts about Malindi beach

Malindi is a warm town located on Kenya’s North coast on an extension of picturesque beaches that have fascinating hiding spots. Malindi offers an amazing blend of old and new all the while having palmed edged beaches that are grand resorts willing to cater for anything that you need on a Beach holiday in Kenya. Gede ruins is a town less than twenty kilometres away that was established in the twelfth century, it was a town that flourished and thrived up to when it was deserted in the seventeenth century. The Arabuko-Sokoke forest, the biggest surviving coastal African forest surrounds these ruins.

The Vasco Da Gama pillar is among the oldest surviving African monument for this Portuguese voyager and it is situated on the oceanfront road close to the jetty. It was constructed by Vasco Da Gama in 1498 as a token of gratitude for the hospitality he had gotten from Malindi’s Sultan. The cross that is on top of the pillar is the initial cross that is embodied with Lisbon limestone.

Near this structure is St Francis Xavier, a tiny Portuguese chapel that was constructed in 1542. It is the oldest of all the Christian churches in East Africa and it is enclosed by a tiny ancient cemetery.

The Malindi Museum that is located along the sea walk close to the jetty possesses some fascinating exhibitions about Malindi’s history. You can also find a contemporary town centre that has craft shops, bars, restaurants plus a club. The Watamu and Malindi marine parks were in 1968 constructed and they were the pioneers in Africa . These marine parks flow with various coral kingdoms and diverse coloured species of fish, for example, the triggerfishes, butterfly, angel and surgeon. Tourists are able to see these aquatic wonders at a cost on glass-bottom tours provided by the marine department. Boats can privately be rented out for a full-day or half-day expedition. While you are inside these vivid reserves, snorkeling and scuba-diving are some of the adventurous activities you can do.

Malindi’s major attraction is its blue warm tropical waters and infinite gorgeous beaches of white sand. All the hotels provide various aquatic sports from snorkelling, to paddle boating and windsurfing.

You can go and discover more about the town’s historic sites, for example, the Malindi museum that is located on the oceanfront close to the jetty, the establishment itself is a basic 19th Century handwork style. You can also take a trip to the Gede Ruins that are close by.

How to get to Malindi?

The Vasco da Gama Pillar in Malindi, Kenya was named after Vasco da Gama who is one of the most famous and celebrated explorers of the Age of Discovery, Vasco da Gama. It was constructed in 1498 or 1499 during his pioneering maritime expedition from Lisbon to India via the Cape of Good Hope. The major reason for the Vasco Da Gama pillar was to help the Portuguese sailors get to India through the same account the pillar played a very important role in the navigation and trade between India and Portugal.

Vasco da Gama first visited Malindi from 15 to 24 April 1498. He was well received by the sultan of Malindi and was provided with food, fresh water and a pilot to take the fleet across the Indian Ocean to ‘Calicut’ (Kozhikode). The oldest marine park in Kenya covers 213 sq km of powder-blue fish, organ-pipe coral, green sea turtles and beds of Thalassia seagrass. Most historians say that the Vasco da Gama Pillar was built as a symbol or an indication of appreciation for the hospitality that was being shown to the Portuguese explorers by the Malindi rulers and their fellow locals.

The pillar today is Malindi’s most visited heritage site. Restoration work carried out since 2020 has included reinforcement of the existing seawalls, repairs to the pillar itself, the construction of a paved access route and the provision of on-site washrooms for visitors. Access to the pillar is subject to an entry ticket. A single ticket currently covers the four sites under the control of the Malindi Museum. These are the Vasco da Gama Pillar, the Portuguese Chapel, the House of Columns and the Heritage Complex museum.

Malindi Museum Society was formed to support the National Museums of Kenya’s policy of acquiring a historic building in Malindi that could be turned into a museum. Malindi’s first museum building, The House of Columns, was opened in 2004. It is a two-storey building dating from 1891.

The Heritage Complex museum contains various historical artefacts from Malindi. It has exhibits containing traditional objects such as musical instruments, tools, and costumes. In the ethnographic section, the museum contains various artefacts of the Mijikenda peoples, ethnic groups inhabiting the Kenyan coast, including wooden totems, as well as ancient artefacts that belonged to Arabs who settled in Malindi.

2. Bio-Ken Snake Farm (Watamu Snake Farm)

Located just outside Watamu, Bio-Ken Farm is also a research centre and laboratory specializing in anti-venom research and the study of snake bites. Here, the snakes are “milked” for their venom to create specific antidotes. The farm even provides emergency care for snakebite victims throughout the area. The researchers at Bio-Ken believe that these reptiles are an important part of our ecosystem, helping to reduce vermin, which in turn controls disease and the destruction of crops. They offer an active education program for visitors and the public about the need to preserve snakes. Bio-Ken offers a free “remove a snake” service in the Watamu area. Contact the farm, and they’ll come out to safely capture an errant snake and release it back into the wild.

3. Portuguese Chapel

The Portuguese Chapel in Malindi, Kenya, was built in 1502 by the residents of the Portuguese factory established by Vasco da Gama during his second voyage to India. It was the first Christian place of worship to be built in East Africa. The Portuguese presence in Malindi began with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498. The most prominent internal feature of the chapel is the stone altar. This Chapel is said to be the oldest Christian church in East Africa and was declared a gazetted monument in 1935. The Chapel is now cared for and maintained by the National Museums of Kenya, which is assisted by the Malindi Museum Society and Kenya Horticultural Society.

Access to the chapel is subject to an entry ticket. A single ticket currently covers the four sites under the control of the Malindi Museum. These are the Vasco da Gama Pillar, the Portuguese Chapel, the House of Columns and the Heritage Complex museum.

Malindi remains the second biggest and least expensive shopping destination on the Kenyan Coast. It remains a cultural experience, especially when visiting the Barani and Shela neighbourhoods where Kilimanjaro spice shops, Bawaly Halwa’s, and Sarto Moderno clothing stores are located.

The town is not particularly big on markets, but there are two common ones. The old Market, locally known as Soko la Zamani, is a colourful market of fresh fruits and vegetables that opens every morning. The new Market is popular for small retail goods, clothing, and electronics. It also serves as a bus terminal for different parts of the region.

Vasco da Gama Pillar is located 120 km from Mombasa city, the pillar is a safari destination in Malindi, Kenya in that it is visited by both local and international tourists and the National Museums of Kenya manage it and ensures that it protects for the posterity, of currently which is known as the monument and visited by many people. The Vasco da Gama pillar also attracts the majority of the schools. The students here use it from across the country and travel to learn more about the pillar’s history. The pillar was declared a National Monument in 1935 and is currently under the National Museums of Kenya. The time to visit the monument is from 8 pm to 6 pm.

When is the best time to visit tanzania.

The best times to visit Tanzania are December through March or June through October during the dry seasons, when the game viewing is at its best. The rains usually last from April to May then occur again in November when there are fewer tourists and vegetation flourishes. During February, wildebeest are calving, giving you a front row seat to the baby's first moments in the savannah.

Kenya or Tanzania: which is better for safari?

Both countries are reputed for outstanding game viewing. Tanzania’s jaw-dropping Mount Kilimanjaro, sweeping coffee plantations and the exotic island of Zanzibar make it unique from its northern neighbor, while Kenya's lush green landscapes make it a bit less tropical, climate-wise. The two countries are frequently combined into a single journey, given their proximity to each other and the fact that they are both locations for the must-see Great Migration. When and what is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a wildlife spectacle, sometimes called The Greatest Show on Earth by safari enthusiasts, during which hundreds of wildebeest and other mammals head towards greener grazing pastures during East Africa's dry season. It is heavily dependent on the weather, specifically the rain which brings new vegetation upon which the wildebeest feed. Generally-speaking, herds are in the Serengeti from November to May. In May, as the grass dries up, herds begin the 500-mile migration north and by June they are in the greener plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They usually stay here until October. From January on, they alternate between woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In anticipation of the short rains—and the greener grasslands that come with it—the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti. In November and December, they arrive to a flourishing green landscape where they stay until the cycle begins again.

Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.

Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Uganda with basic accommodations starting at $96 per person, per day, plus the Uganda gorilla trekking permit which costs $700 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there. Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.

Suggested tips range from $10 to $20 per person per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.

If you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek in Uganda, your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas or in regions close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The trek to spot gorillas can be strenuous. It could take anywhere from two to eight hours to find and observe the gorillas, depending on the time of year. Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.

Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.

Rwanda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs
