Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

Fran Golden

Shore excursions in the Mediterranean highlight must-see experiences such as fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some of the wonders you travel to see – the ruins of Pompeii, the Roman Colosseum and Michelangelo's David in Florence – are nowhere near the pier where your cruise ship will dock. The easiest way to get to them is with tours sold by your cruise line, which typically include the services of tour guides who are experts about the destination.

While some Mediterranean cruise passengers choose to do an excursion in each port and see every major attraction, it's also fun to plan some time exploring on your own . If you go the independent route, do some research and pick a port where your preferences – beachfront, cafes, boutiques or other attractions – are close to the pier.

While excursion offerings vary by cruise line, here are our picks for the best shore excursions in the Mediterranean.

Full-day tour of Athens, from Piraeus, Greece

The port of Piraeus, Greece, is about seven miles from Athens, and while you can use taxis or public transport to get into the city, you are better off booking a tour with a licensed guide who will get you to the key sights and provide details about the city — a birthplace of democracy and Western thought. Athens is a fascinating city with both ancient and modern attractions. While half-day tours will get you to the famous Acropolis, we recommend a full-day experience so you can see and experience more.

Europe's oldest capital has its origins in 3,000 B.C. Grab a window seat on the bus so you'll see the hilltop Acropolis dominating the skyline, as it has for thousands of years. On the tour, you will spend time exploring its sacred buildings including the Parthenon, the beautiful, columned temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.

Your tour will also show off other sites throughout the city, including the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, Greece's impressive Parliament building and the Olympic Stadium. You'll have opportunity to dine on Greek cuisine (lunch is included in full-day tours) and shop for souvenirs on the narrow ancient streets of the lively Platka neighborhood.

Pick a tour that affords time at the Acropolis Museum, a modern museum full of ancient treasures such as statues that date back to the 5 th century B.C.

Best of Olympia tour, from Katakolon, Greece

tui cruise excursions prices mediterranean

Katakolon, Greece, is a small town with a nice strip of beach – and a landmark attraction about an hour away. Cruise passengers make the trip to ancient Olympia to see the site where the Olympic Games debuted in 776 B.C. A tour of the ruins of the religious center and sports complex includes the Temple of Zeus, Roman baths, gymnasium and swimming pool, as well as the first Olympic stadium. Three thousand years ago, the games took place every four years, after the summer harvest, with competitors coming from as far away as Italy and Asia Minor.

The short foot races were the most prestigious of the events, and you can imagine the roar of the crowd as you stand in the field where the races took place. Your tour will likely include a stop at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia to see some amazing artifacts, including bronze and stone statues of well-toned athletes.

Palace of Knossos tour, Crete

Wherever you dock in Crete, in the Greek islands, you'll want to visit the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates to the Bronze Age.

First settled around 7000 B.C., the religious and administrative center was the domain of King Minos and home of Zeus and Europa, according to Greek mythology. Tour the ruins, some partially rebuilt, to learn about the labyrinth built to contain the Minotaur (half man and half bull) and how a queen had running water in her bathroom more than 3,000 years ago.

Your tour may also include a stop at the Archeological Museum of Heraklion, which houses Minoan artifacts removed from the palace site.

Game of Thrones tour, Dubrovnik, Croatia

tui cruise excursions prices mediterranean

You can take a shuttle from the pier and tour Old Town Dubrovnik on your own, but if you are a fan of "Game of Thrones," the must-do is a guided tour that highlights sights that appeared on the HBO TV show. As fans know, Dubrovnik doubled for King's Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

Stops on the tour include the formidable 11 th -century Lovrijenac Fortress, high on a rock overlooking the sea, just outside the medieval walls that surround the Old Town. In novelist George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, which inspired GOT, the views from the fort are of Blackwater Bay.

Related: Movies and TV shows you can stream to get your cruising fix

In Old Town, you'll climb to and walk along the defensive walls that appeared on the show in the Battle of Blackwater Bay, as well as in other scenes. Other GOT sights in Old Town include the Jesuit Staircase, where Cersei began her Walk of Shame (season 5) and an area near St. Dominic Street, where market scenes for the show were filmed. Elsewhere, the outside of the Ethnographic Museum Rupe may look familiar. It appeared on the show as Littlefinger's brothel.

Rome city tour, from Civitavecchia, Italy

The port closest to Rome is Civitavecchia, Italy. Getting into the city can take 1.5 hours (or less or more, depending on traffic). It's a good idea to book a full-day excursion to make the most of your time in the city – especially if you are determined to see St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, along with the Roman Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, the Forum, the Pantheon and other sights. Tours may also stop at Trevi Fountain, where tossing a coin is said to ensure your return to Rome.

Some tours combine one marquee sight and free time. If you are going this route, we recommend you go with the Colosseum, an amphitheater that once held as many as 50,000 spectators and where you can well imagine life in ancient Rome in all its (gory) glory.

Make sure to also climb Palatine Hill for views of the city, which has something fascinating — a flowing fountain, a gelato stand, a designer handbag shop — practically around every corner.

Florence city tour, from Livorno, Italy

If you want to explore Florence, look for cruises calling in Livorno, Italy, or another port in Tuscany. From there, you'll take a bus ride into the city, known for its Renaissance treasures. The city itself is a visual treat; a shore excursion will assure that you see such key sights as Michelangelo's David, in all his polished marble naked glory (at the tickets-required Accademia Gallery).

Art lovers will want to choose a tour that includes the Uffizi Gallery, with its works by Botticelli, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance artists. Your tour will also showcase the 15 th -century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (a.k.a. the Duomo) and other architecture treasures in the city. Some tours also visit the university town of Pisa, famous for its Leaning Tower.

Ancient Pompeii, Capri and Sorrento tour, from Naples, Italy

It's not difficult to imagine life in ancient times while exploring the remarkable ruins of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by ash from Mount Vesuvius in the year 79. The ruins — the forum, baths, temples and decorated villas — appear frozen in time.

While you can focus all your attention on Pompeii, we recommend a full-day tour from Naples that also showcases the breathtaking Amalfi Coast and the beautiful island of Capri — a typical combination would be Capri, the resort town of Sorrento and Pompeii.

You'll take a jetfoil to Capri and a funicular ride up to Capri Town, a shopping haven (with residential side streets well worth exploring). Back on the mainland, drive to Sorrento, with time to people-watch at an outdoor cafe. On the way back to Naples, stop by Pompeii for a guided tour of the ruins.

Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia tour, Barcelona

tui cruise excursions prices mediterranean

In Barcelona, you dock right in the city. Las Ramblas, the city's famous boulevard, is a long walk or quick shuttle bus ride away. For us, the must-do shore excursion is to see the extravagant creations of architect Antoni Gaudi, including his La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where construction has been ongoing since 1882. The cathedral is the most visited attraction in Spain.

Choose a tour that also takes you to the hillside, UNESCO-recognized Parc Guell, where Gaudi sought to combine nature with modernist architecture. You'll also see two Gaudi residential buildings on the Paseo de Gracia — the La Pedrera apartment building and Casa Batllo, a private home with an especially eerie-looking façade.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Some tours also stop at Museu Picasso, which features early works by Pablo Picasso, in the city's Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic).

Ancient Ephesus tour, from Kusadasi, Turkey

A favorite of those who love to explore ancient history, Ephesus is one of the most fascinating and best-preserved ancient cities in the world (and only a short drive from the Turkish resort town of Kusadasi).

In Ephesus, you walk the same marble streets as the ancients to sites that include a bath house, massive amphitheater and the jaw-dropping remains of a two-story library building façade, looking at columns, mosaics and monuments along the way. Greeks, Egyptians and Romans all ruled in Ephesus, but most of what you see today was built by the Romans. Outside the library, carved in stone, is early marketing asking whether you prefer to visit the library or a house of pleasure (an age-old question).

A tour of the ancient city can be combined in longer excursions with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, a modest chapel built on the spot where the Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last days — a sanctioned pilgrimage site. There's also a second pilgrimage site in the area, St. John's Basilica, where St. John wrote the fourth book of the New Testament.

Marella Discovery Excursions - are they value for money?

Cool Cruiser

Came back from the Asia cruise that took in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam. I have to say that the cruise ship was very good but some of the Shore Excursions at the various ports appear very poor and not value for money.

We booked several trips before we left because we weren't sure of how far the docking was from the ship, if there would be any alternatives on shore for us to explore etc.

we found from talking to other more experienced Travellers on board that they went to the same places that we had been to, stayed longer at others and had paid a lot less ( in some cases up to £30-£60). I know people will say that on the organised trip you have a guide and that the trip will be safe, having been selected by Tui.

i thought so myself but our visit to Sihanoukville by Tuk Tuk still sends shivers down my spine. Not only was the excursion was a shambles

( Guide went to one Temple, the 10 Tuk Tuks went to another, after being taken to the wrong Tuk Tuks)

our Tuk Tuk was when we started ok but we were cramped , we sat facing each other, with our feet on the spare tyre as the driver drove whilst watching a Kung Fu movie on his phone, which was propped up behind the steering wheel. We thought at first he had the radio on but he was watching a film! On the way back the exhaust blew, we got off the Tuk to find ourselves covered in paint from gripping the sides so hard, we had to tell to follow the other Tuks because had no mirrors to see. If we moved we banged into him because the screen separating us from him was plastic.

the point was the excursion was unsafe, the Tuks were not roadworthy and the Guide admitted that the company was not the usual one they used.

if we had gone on our own we could have found a sound Tuk, agreed a price and gone round all the places for half the price.

When we asked for our money back from Tui, they offered 30% as a goodwill gesture which we turned down. Having got back home we complained to Head Office at Tui who said " that's what aTuk Tuk is like in Cambodia! Not true, we saw some very safe and fancy looking Tuks.

from this we concluded that we would do our Excursions independently or with others to lessen the cost and went to many of the same destinations as the organised tour and stayed longer at the places we liked and didn't visit Temple after Temple.

all our forays were good, cheaper, and we felt safe. The drivers all had a sheet with pictures of the places that you wanted to visit and you just pointed to them and off you went.

what are other travellers experience of the Organised Excursions that Ships offer? Do you think they are worth the money?

There are lots of options, you just have to work out which is the best for you. Marella excursions are probably not the best, but in some cases they are the only option and they, at least,  get you back to the ship on time. Private excursions, if possible, are great and tend to be smaller groups. Lots of ports are DIY possible. We have done both options and luckily we have been very lucky with our choices.

Cristaltips

I agree about the Marella trips not being value for money. I feel that we were very much used as guinea pigs for their first Asia cruises.

We also did a Tuk Tuk  trip in Cambodia. It was sold as 4.5 hours. We left ship at 9.00 to transport to Tuk Tuk then sat on it for at least 15 mins while they got everyone together. The traffic was awful and I did fear for my life over the state of the vehicle. However, we lived to tell the tale and were back on the ship by 12.30. Doesn’t need a mathematician to work out that wasn’t 4.5 hours!

The Penang trip. We visited a temple (of course!) and a batik factory which was very good. The rest of the trip ( in a coach with no apparent rear suspension) went downhill. A visit to see a fruit and spice stall on the side of a busy road, and the finale was to see , in the distance, a bridge linking Penang to the mainland!

Bangkok. We drove for 2 hours ( had a comfort stop at motorway services) into Bangkok. Drove round passing Chinatown and Flower Market and stopped for a temple visit for about 30 mins. Then drove back, another 2 hours, another comfort stop.

As it was our first trip to this part of the world, we were wary about doing things on our own and getting back on time. However, we feel we missed seeing a lot on the trips we did. Marella really need to review their trips in my opinion.

Just back from Red Sea Odyssey and thought the excursions were overpriced and very rushed, also poorly described in terms of ability, accessibility, and duration.  Destination Services were terrible, giving out wrong information beforehand and very confrontational and rude when we complained afterwards.  Don't get me wrong, we we're thrilled to be able to visit these places, and having never been in that area before we're glad to have the "safety" of being on a ships excursion, but if you are more confident and can arrange an alternative I'd do it!

Jayneykul

We did a ships tour in Civitavecchia As we had done several previous trips in to Rome. We thought it was very good value and definitely much cheaper than the American lines.

Done a few excursions via Tui from cruise ships.  Found some great, some quite poor.  You will probably get cheaper and better value through other companies.    The reason I go through Tui is for the protection.  If something goes wrong whilst on their excursion eg. bus breaks down or something, the ship will wait till your back on board.  I wouldn't be too confident if you went through ACME Tours, bus broke down and there was no way you would reembark the ship before it was due to leave port.

I am reading this because I am considering a Marella cruise and want to hear what people say about the whole experience.  However I am never keen on ship tours.  They are usually overpriced.  They have to be.  If a tour operates usually prices a tour.  The ship negotiates a price,  There has to be a commission.

I understand nerves though when going on a first trip to Asia.  Once you have done your first trip you will know what it is like and be braver about independent tours ..  and Tuk Tuks!!

MAke sure that you leave the ship early and allow an hour or so extra to get back.  I think that one important consideration is how easily you will get to your next destination if you should miss the ship (and I am sure it rarely happens).

If your next port is reached after 4 days at sea, you need to be very careful.  If your next port is 200 km up the coast, you can be braver.

Marella Discovery Cruise: Treasures of the Mediterranean – Review

Marella Discovery Cruise Treasures of the Mediterranean Review main

By Mason Oldridge, July 2022

“You can teach to serve but you can’t teach service” were the words of Harlequin, the Head of Entertainment on our cruise (and yes, that IS his real name). His words stood out as it was a pretty good overview of the outstanding service we received throughout our week aboard the Marella Discovery.

Arriving in Palma, we sailed towards our first stop, Sardinia. Italy is a beautiful country and from our first morning dock, it became apparent what astonishing views we would be waking up to each day. The next arrivals offered up trips to the eerie archaeological site of the destroyed city of Pompeii, monuments such as the Colosseum and the Vatican in the stunning capital Rome, before moving on to the French island of Corsica and finally back to Spain for the chance to visit Barcelona. However, despite the opportunity to visit so many amazing places, it was the experience on board that stood out the most.

“Impressive”

The entertainment team, simply put, were fantastic. You’d maybe think that poolside sunbathers would wish to be left alone to sizzle in the sun but all the fun and games that the reps brought made our time on the pool deck a much funnier one (the 90s and 00s rave game was my personal favourite). Whether a quiz or a puzzle, the reps gave it their all and had both the port and starboard side in stiches. A massive shout-out to reps Ross, who was constantly hilarious and even played my song request in the nightclub, and Antony, a lovely guy despite always being on the losing side of the games.

The evening shows might not have been my cup of tea, but the cast were all fantastic in their performances and brought some impressive talent to the stage. At the helm of the entertainment was Harlequin who presented these shows and joined in with the fun and games in his friendly manner – a true credit to the ship’s crew.

“Quality service”

The cruiseliner was packed to the rafters with food and drink venues. You could help yourself at the Islands buffet or alternatively be dined on hand and foot at the fancier 47O club. Whichever venue you chose, you were guaranteed top quality service from the kindest of staff that ensured your dining experience was top notch. Unfortunately, the waiter service offered at 47 was counteracted with miniature portion sizes. Luckily, there were plenty of other places to fill up at! These included 47’s Italian counterpart Gallery 47 and The Glass House, a refreshing restaurant centred around the indoor pool and located next to the gym and spa.

Specialising in pizza, pasta and tapas, the crew went overboard (pun intended) to cater to your every whim and were a real asset to the team. We would have perhaps eaten here more if they didn’t require a dress code. The Snack Shack was fantastic to grab a quick bite of lunch, offering all the unhealthy favourites such as fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs and fried chicken as well as pre-packed sandwiches. The remaining eateries were at an additional cost which defies the concept of all-inclusive and therefore we didn’t try The Coffee Port, Sushi Bar, Asian fusion restaurant Kora La or the Surf & Turf Steakhouse.

Come night time (or perhaps earlier) there was plenty of choice of where to drink. The Pool Bar was a favourite in the daytime and the Squid & Anchor was popular for the evening. Karaoke was always a fun feature here but for those who fancied a bit more class to their evening, they could head downstairs to the Atrium Bar or Live Room for piano sessions and music performances. The Live Room also featured a casino for those who wanted to try their hand at rolling the dice.

Banana daiquiri from the Pool Bar

“Great selection”

Understandably, Marella is going to tailor their holidays to their audience but it would have been nice to have seen some more inclusion of nightlife for the younger generation. Bar Eleven was a fantastic bar on the very top floor and would have made a brilliant nightclub for the youth on board and so it was a shame that when the lights came on and the dancefloor opened up, the soundtrack still matched the older demographic. Whichever venue you found yourself in though, there was a great selection of drinks on offer; frustratingly, many were on a separate premium list, once again defying the purpose of all-inclusive and it wasn’t always clear which fell under which list.

The pool was definitely the centrepiece of the ship and a mainstay for the daytime. A great way to cool down from the glaring sun and paired with two hot tubs, it was just a shame that the time in it was spent keeping our heads dry to avoid the saltwater. Furthermore, the pool was not of an adequate size in relation to the size of the ship. However, it was almost impossible to not look at the blue waves with the reflection of the sun and think how fortunate you are to be there in that moment.

For the more active guests, the ship offered an array of activities. This included a climbing wall, a running track, a mini golf course and table tennis, plus an escape room (at an extra cost). One evening, the pool deck turned into an outdoor cinema which received a positive turnout to say it coincided with the evening show. This was not the only occurrence of the pool deck becoming alive at night as there was a midweek party which saw the majority of the guests head up to celebrate.

Marella Discovery Cruise Treasures of the Mediterranean Review towels

Amazing towel animals left by housekeeping

“Dedication”

However you spent your time, you’d retreat to your cabin at the end of the day to find a towel animal on your bed alongside chocolates. Whether you were returning to a swan, crab, or mouse, this particular gesture highlighted the dedication of the housekeeping team and so it was joyous to see them display their creations in the final night’s flag parade. Even when heading back to your room in the day, you’d be met with friendly smiles and polite welcomes across the whole floor, which is probably why Harlequin’s statement was met with an overwhelming applause.

In conclusion, despite the minor shortcomings, the holiday was one to really look back in fondness on and was a remarkable week of top quality service whether in the middle of the ocean or witnessing one of Europe’s stunning landmarks.

February 2024: Sun Princess, Princess Cruises

When Sun Princess launches this year she will be Princess Cruises’ largest (and 16th) ship, with room for 4,300 passengers. Currently under construction in Italy, Sea Princess will pay tribute to Europe’s ship-building heritage, with public spaces inspired by Santorini’s famous terraces and the beautiful Piazza found on Princess’s other ships.

There’s also the Dome, a glass dome with an indoor-outdoor pool which transforms into a stage at nighttime and will be the setting for adrenaline-fueled acrobatic performances.

  9. Marella Discovery Excursions

  10. Marella Discovery Cruise: Treasures of the Mediterranean
