We are very lucky that so many days here in Key West look exactly like the beautiful photos and video you see on our website & other marketing materials. However, you should be aware that all of our water adventures are outdoors and influenced by Mother Nature. Many days underwater visibility is 80+ feet and teeming with sea life; others are not. Though we hope that every day is perfect, we are not in control of the wind, waves, clouds, rain or underwater sea life. If we are aware of any concerning factors regarding conditions, we will make an announcement before your trip departs. At that time, you may elect to take the tour, reschedule or receive a refund.

Key West is a very popular snorkeling destination as we are home to North America’s only living coral barrier reef. The reef is protected by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and is home to over 500 species of fish and an abundance or corals. Fury also supports local reef restoration efforts by donating a portion of every snorkel ticket to Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The Captain will choose the best reef destination for snorkeling based on the marine conditions of the day. There are several possible reef locations you may visit: Sand Key, Rock Key, Eastern Dry Rocks and Western Sambo, just to name a few.

Our experienced and CPR certified Fury crew will give you detailed instructions as you sail out to the Living Coral Reef. They will go over the best practices and safe snorkel procedures for your time at the reef.

We will provide you with a mask, snorkel and buoyancy compensator and fins for snorkeling. You are more than welcome to bring your own gear if you wish.

Wetsuits are available seasonally with limited sizing (cash or credit).

The total snorkel trip time is 3 hours. Guests will enjoy about an hour to sun and relax as we sail out to reef, approximately an hour of reef snorkeling and about another hour sail back to Key West.

Yes, but the space is limited in the shaded areas.

Yes, we have a stairway to the sea, which makes it very easy for you to get on and off the catamaran. The Captain may also open a gate on the side of the catamaran for experienced guests to jump in.

Yes. We do not require you to participate in snorkeling although the ticket price is the same for everyone.

Yes. All of our vessels are equipped with a fresh water rinse for guests to use.

We do not provide food on this tour but you are more than welcome to bring food with you, just as long as nothing is in a glass container and it fits in a small soft cooler. Water and soda are available before you snorkel and beer, wine and mimosas are available after you finish snorkeling.

Yes. Fury will provide you with snorkel instruction and equipment, but you must know how to swim to participate in any snorkel adventure. We take you about 7 miles offshore of Key West and once in the ocean, there will not be a place for you to touch or stand, while snorkeling. All guests will receive flotation devices for their safety. Fury crew is present to assist in an emergency, but will not be able to solely attend to one party for the duration of the trip. For those unable to swim, we suggest booking a trip aboard our Glass Bottom Boat, where you can see the reef and marine life from the comfort of the boat. Guests are also always welcome to relax and enjoy the amenities aboard our spacious catamarans, during the snorkel portion of any tour.

All participants must sign a liability waiver to participate in snorkeling and other adventures.

No, we do not offer any wifi on our vessels.

Departure Location #1 241 Front Street – Located just behind Opal Key on the corner of Front St. and Greene St. in the Opal Key Marina. Check-in booths are located on the pier.

No, we do not provide parking at any of our check in locations, but you can use street parking, pay to park lots or parking garages.

It is necessary for Fury to collect your paid in full voucher and give you a boarding pass. This helps us maintain an accurate count for the Coast Guard. You will also be required to fill out various liability waiver forms for the activities.

Yes! To receive a military discount on any Fury trip, please book through the MWR office on Key West’s Sigsbee base by calling 305-293-4174.

Most Fury tours will require the minor guest’s nautral parent be present at check in to sign them in. Please call 888-976-0899 for specific policy details for your preferred tour.

Yes! Fury operates 365 days a year. Be sure to check out our Special Trips & Events to see if we are running any special Holiday trips.

All guests are provided with Buoyancy Compensators for snorkeling. Life jackets are onboard for everyone in case of emergency.

Fury Water Adventures does not operate in unsafe weather conditions, but a light rain shower is not a deterrent. The Captain will assess the weather and should the Captain determine that the conditions are unsafe to run the tour, the tour may be postponed or it will be canceled. If a trip is canceled by Fury Water Adventures for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the trip during your stay in Key West. If you are unable to reschedule, you will have the option of receiving a voucher for a future trip or receiving a full refund. Every effort will be made to run tours, as advertised. Should Fury have to amend or alter your tour due to extraneous circumstances, tickets remain non-refundable on tours taken.

All cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to your trip’s scheduled departure time. To place a cancellation, please call 1-888-976-0899 or email [email protected] and refer to the confirmation number at the top of your confirmation document. Failure to place a cancellation at least 24 hours in advance will result in your credit card being charged the full amount of the reserved. No refunds will be issued for reservations cancelled within 24 hours of departure, unless reservation refund protection was purchased. Please note that failure to show for the reserved trip without cancellation will result in no refund. If a trip is cancelled by Fury Water Adventures® for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the trip during your stay in Key West. If you are unable to reschedule, you will have the option of receiving a voucher for a future trip or receiving a refund.

Fury has a 24 hour notice cancellation policy to receive a refund. Guests can purchase Reservation Refund Protection for a 10% fee to be eligible to cancel or transfer tickets up to 1 hour prior to their scheduled departure. All you have to do is email a request to [email protected] no later than 1 hour in advance of your reservation time.

Reservation refund protection fees are 100% non-refundable in the event of any cancellation or reservation change.

Fury allows service animals only. A service animal is any dog that has been trained to perform tasks to benefit an individual. The work performed must be directly related to the individuals disability. According the ADA service animals for emotional support, therapy, comfort or companionship are not considered service animals.

The guest requiring the service animal must be in possession of the animal at all times. Due to the nature of Fury tours, guest and service animal may be required to remain on the boat for the entirety of the tour . This is to ensure the guest’s safety as well as that of the service animal, Key West wildlife, other guests, captain and crew.

Large Sandie Cat catamaran had lots of room. Beautiful boat ride. Fun to swim at reef. We had ages 10-67 in our group and all enjoyed the trip.

Great adventure for 64 yr old, solo female. The Catamaran was beautifully kept, the captain and crew (Thanks Capt. Steve, Keli and Argentina.) took great care of everyone. Loved the fact I felt very comfortable and secure. Snorkeling was fun- saw Parrot fish, yellow tails and some wreckage. Would have seen more if the water was calmer but just getting out and sailing along those Caribbean waters made me very happy.

This was one of the most pleasant boat cruises I’ve ever done. We were here to celebrate my sisters 50th birthday party and we had an amazing time! DJ was top-notch the appetizers were great! This was the highlight of my quick trip to the keys. Highly recommend the sunset snorkel + dolphin trip. This was for my birthday, and I was even more pleased to learn that Sunset Watersports offers a free tickets to folks on their birthday. Nice touch! We saw several groups of dolphins, including a mom and baby who cruised in front of our boat in crystal clear water for ~10 minutes. The brews flowed on the way back just in time for sunset. Crew was great. I would do this again if I have the chance for a return trip!

A nice boat trip that gives you view of Key West that you won’t get lubbing around on land. We went to a good reef and saw some good fish. The witty and charming Captain Steve, his tunes, and his friendly crew made for a fun afternoon.

This trip was absolutely awesome. The tour guide Michael could not have been better. He instructed us on everything and his laid back personality and knowledge of the area truly made this one of the best excursions we have done. The little boats are very cool and go pretty darn fast. The group size of five boats is perfect you never feel overcrowded and can just relax and enjoy yourself. If you get the chance then do this tour, excellent for couples and something different you likely have not done before.

Description

Pay close attention as professional crew members provide a safety briefing and snorkeling overview. When you reach the reef, hop into the translucent waters with provided snorkeling gear to discover an underwater world of exotic fish and neon coral. As you follow the many schools of fish around, keep your eyes peeled for copper sweepers darting to and from rocks. If you're curious to know what exactly you're seeing, ask the crew to share their expert knowledge or request a handy fish identification card.

After exploring the reef, climb back on deck and wet your whistle with provided beverages including wine, ice-cold beer, and filtered water. Perhaps indulge a bit further with your favorite cocktail at the onboard cash bar, and then sit back and relax, keeping watch for a pod of dolphins who might swim along with the boat as we set sail for our return trip.

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.

Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

How long do I get to snorkel?

Key West Snorkeling Adventure includes 60 minutes of snorkeling.

Will I get seasick on Key West Snorkeling Adventure?

If you have any doubts about becoming seasick on the water, we recommend taking a Dramamine® Motion Sickness Relief tablet the night before your trip. Some people recommend taking it the night before your cruise and then again that morning so you will not feel so drowsy.

What is the age limit for snorkeling?

There are no legal age limits for snorkeling. We have found that age 5 or 6 is a good age to learn the basics of snorkeling, however, it’s entirely up to individuals to make the best choice for their family.

I've never snorkeled before, will I be OK?

First-time snorkelers can be assured of one-on-one instruction and assistance. We find introducing folks to our world very rewarding!

Can we use our own snorkeling gear?

The snorkel gear we use on Key West Water Sports tours is high quality and for your protection, the equipment is sanitized after each use. However, if you feel more comfortable using your own snorkeling equipment, feel free to bring it on the tour. Please note, there is no discount for providing your own equipment and we can’t be responsible for any lost or damaged items.

Can I go snorkeling if I cannot swim?

Yes, this is possible, as long as you are comfortable going into the water. All Key West Water Sports snorkeling tours adhere to strict safety regulations and have been designed to be enjoyed by all.

Your safety is our #1 priority, which is why:

You will be wearing a flotation device at all times.
On many tours, there is a stairway from the boat into the water so you won’t have to “jump” in!
There are trained staff in the water and watching from the boat at all times.

For these reasons, we believe that even non-swimmers can have a wonderful time on our snorkeling trips, however, the final judgment call is yours to make. Please note we do not give refunds if you decide not to snorkel on the trip.

The Ideal Snorkeling Experience

For those who have experienced great snorkeling they know that visibility is numero uno and what’s in the water to be seen is a close second. Coral reefs are the most popular attraction for snorkelers.

Because they offer color, diversity and of course – fish. Even the famed, magnificent moray eel, and its relatives, hang in and around the reef.

The ecosystem of a living, growing coral reef has fascinated the scientific and naturalist community ever since the first underwater excursions discovered reefs using diving helmets in the 1800s.

The existence of pristine blue waters and a healthy, living coral reef which is just a few feet below the water’s surface is a remarkable site.

Water depth, like visibility, plays a large role in the snorkeling experience. If marine life is in deep water then it’s unlikely to be fully-visible using just snorkeling apparatus.

Likewise, if a man-made structure such as a ship or boat wreck is too deep to be accessed by snorkeling then it warrants looking for snorkeling sites with more shallow depths. We’ll talk more about water depth in the “Be Safe – Know Your Limits” section below.

Ideal conditions for snorkeling exist when water clarity and reasonable water depth exist, (anywhere between about 4 feet and 25 feet) and there is interesting marine life or man-made structures to view.

Florida Keys Snorkeling

There are said to be some 600 species of sea life on the reefs surrounding Key West and the Florida Keys chain of islands. It will depend on your mode of accessing the reefs as well as the seasonal weather conditions whether you experience some, or many, of the aquatic wonders of the Florida Keys.

Some reef structures may be near the shore and accessible by “walk-in snorkeling” while most of the reef structures of the Florida Keys are only accessible by boat.

Snorkeling Safety

Being deemed a “good swimmer” is a relative matter. And when snorkeling in open waters such as the Florida Keys you should always be respectful of the physical challenges, as well as the dangers. Especially in wind and choppy seas the snorkeling experience can be physically demanding.

As mentioned above some underwater features will be too deep to access using just a mask, snorkel and fins rig, and are better suited to scuba diving.

It is important to know just how far you can free dive, and hold your breath safely, and as a good rule of thumb don’t push the limits until you’re comfortable with more depth and duration.

Very few snorkeling accidents are reported. Nonetheless, it’s good practice to stay safe and be respectful of your own physical human limits. A great day of snorkeling should not be a laborious undertaking.

Types of Key West Snorkeling Tours & Excursions:

There are basically three choices for snorkeling excursions in the Florida Keys.

Choice #1 -The “Cattle Boat” Tour

Cattle boats are a very popular choice because they are inexpensive and provide free beer. The average cattle boat holds anywhere between 20 and 150 snorkelers and will cost you anywhere between $40 and $95 per person.

Cattle boats will take you out to the most popular destinations which are saturated with up to 150,000 snorkelers per year (not so good for the reef). Once there, you will encounter some reef fish, a few patches of live coral, and up to 250 other snorkelers. You will be allowed to snorkel for about 45 minutes, after which someone will blow a whistle and herd you back to the boat (hence the term cattle boat). If this your idea of a fun time, then by all means enjoy!

Choice #2 – Private Charter

The private charter is a great way to see the reef but can be a bit cost prohibitive, especially if there are less than 4 people. The boats range in size from 28 to 50 feet, and they typically serve good food and beverages.

With a little advance knowledge and favorable weather, you can usually persuade your captain to take you to some of the better “locals only” reefs which are really nice. You will experience lots of fish, lots of healthy live coral, and most of all, no crowds kicking you in the face.

Some captains and mates will accompany you in the water and, if you’re lucky, will point out some of the really cool reef creatures.

Choice #3 – Namaste’ ECO

Our Key West Snorkeling Tour Destinations:

The best and most colorful reefs we travel to are the secluded offshore barrier reefs. As a result, these reefs are anywhere from 4 to 12 miles from our location on Stock Island. Barrier reefs are accessible and safe on calm days (winds less than 15 mph).

Near shore destinations feature calmer conditions which makes for easier snorkeling. Near shore excursions tend to favor the smaller patch reefs and mangrove estuaries.

The Truth About Weather!

Starting in late April and ending in early October we are blessed with many days of light wind, calm seas and an occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Due to these conditions, we can offer great coral viewing and comfortable snorkeling conditions. In addition, the water temperature is as good as it gets during the summer season.

However, starting in late October the weather starts to change and planning offshore snorkel excursions becomes more problematic. Our cold fronts don’t really drop the temperatures too much, but they do increase the seas and stir up our normally “gin clear” water. For this reason we plan for the passage of theses cold fronts.

On days when the wind and seas are higher, we absolutely will not put you in at the offshore barrier reefs. Quite honestly, on the rough days, offshore snorkeling is not an experience we would choose for ourselves, much less our paying customers. On the days when offshore conditions are not conducive to a comfortable experience, we will opt for our inshore destinations which include inshore patch reefs, mangrove estuaries (natural fish nurseries), and inshore mangrove lakes.

This is a very beginner and kid-friendly snorkel spot with many soft corals such as sea rods and sea fans, hard corals like brain and fire corals as well as juveniles of various fish species.

Avanti Dutch Wreck

Those who love exploring interesting snorkeling places in Key West should visit the Avanti Wreck. The Avanti (also called Dutch wreck or Windjammer) is also situated in Dry Tortugas, a mile southwest of Loggerhead Key, and rests shallow enough to offer excellent snorkeling. Actually, some parts of it are even exposed at low tide and the maximum depth is 22ft/6.7m.

This Florida Keys wreck is in excellent condition; it split into two parts and its parts of scattered over the seafloor with healthy corals growing on and around them attracting huge schools of fish and many sea creatures to the area.

Marquesas Keys

Marquesas Keys is a chain of 10 uninhabited islands west of Key West that were formed by a meteorite millions of years ago. In 1622, a Spanish Treasure Fleet sank in the area; the commander of the fleet was Marquis de Cadereita and this is why the island group was named Marquesas Keys.

Today Marquesas Keys is known as one of the most popular diving and snorkeling destinations around Key West. Expect to find here untouched reefs with large coral pinnacles and coral heads, interesting caves (however, these are accessible for scuba divers only), and crystal clear waters. The strong currents attract larger pelagic species to the area so there is a high chance of spotting jackfish and sharks here.

Often referred to as one of the best dive and snorkel sites of Key West, the Sambo Reef System offers fantastic conditions for underwater adventurers at all levels. It lies near Boca Chica Key and includes 3 large reef structures (Eastern, Middle, and Western) For snorkeling, the Western reef is the best since this has shallow waters (between 3-30ft/0.9-9m)

While snorkeling at the Western Sambo Reef, you will see healthy hard, and stony coral structures (branch, brain, and elkhorn corals). On the eastern side, there is also a shipwreck.

Tip: If you don’t want to drive down to Key West stop at the Upper Keys. There is good snorkeling in Key Largo and Biscayne National Park too.

A little east of Sand Key Reef, Rock Key is an under-the-radar spot to go snorkeling in Key West. It is part of the Sanctuary Preservation Area and Key West National Wildlife Refuge so the area is well-protected; a variety of Florida reef fish and sea creatures can be seen around the shallow bank reefs (the depth range is 5-35ft/1.5-10.6m) while the deeper cracks and canyons provide hiding habitat for larger marine animals such as morays, groupers and octopus.

In addition, you can encounter turtles and see sharks while snorkeling at Rock Key! If this were not enough, the area has many shipwrecks too so you can find remnants like spikes, tiles or ballast piles when exploring underwater.

Sand Key Lighthouse Reef

Sand Key is located seven miles south of Key West. This protected area is a favorite among snorkeling enthusiasts. Thanks to its remote location and the strict no-take policy (which means no fishing, spearfishing, or lobstering), the Sand Key Lighthouse Reef is one of the healthiest coral gardens in Florida.

The water is often flat and calm which creates an optimal snorkeling experience for the entire family. Sand Key provides varying snorkeling depths of 1 to 15 feet surrounding the famous lighthouse built-in 1853. You will see a variety of tropical fish species, sea turtles, sharks, and more!

From late spring through summer there is jellyfish season in the Florida Keys . Although most jellies that frequent the area are not harmful to humans, it is recommended that you wear a rash guard/UV protection clothing that will provide you with protection against the sun, jellyfish stings, and waterborne irritants.

To decide if you need a wetsuit when snorkeling it depends on what season you visit the area and on your personal preferences. The water temperature is around 80-82.4F/26.6-28C during the summer months and around 68-73F/20-22.7C in winter. Such temperatures are comfortable for most people but if you tend to feel cold, a shorty or a 3mm thick wetsuit comes in handy, especially in the colder months. If not wearing a wetsuit, UV protective clothing is recommended to avoid sunburn.

Can I see sharks while snorkeling in Key West?

Although it is not guaranteed, there is a high chance that you will see sharks while snorkeling in Key West. The most common species to see are nurse sharks and reef sharks. Occasionally lemon and hammerhead sharks can be spotted too.

Is Key West (Cayo Hueso) or Key Largo better for snorkeling?

Both Key West and Key Largo have healthy coral reefs and beautiful marine life, therefore it really depends on your personal preferences what area will suit better for you. Choose Key West if you want to snorkel from the shore as there are a few beaches here that are suitable for snorkeling and it has beautiful reefs reachable with boat trips, while Key Largo features the area’s most famous snorkel spot, the Christ of the Abyss underwater statue that is also no to miss out.

The Sandie Cat is a nice, large catamaran that provided plenty of space to lounge. Excellent views of the coast of Key West and beautiful waters. We picked the calmest day of our vacation, and were rewarded with lots of colorful fish. Definitely the highlight of our vacation in the Keys. Fantastic and helpful crew. Great excursion and overall experience on the snorkeling trip. I have been on several of these trips and the reef they took us to was amazing. Blue water and the most colorful fish and coral. Staff was excellent. Robin and Steve were fantastic and really made the time on the boat fun for our girls trip. Our captains make sure to take our guests to the best reef locations. We have been snorkeling for a long time in Key West and our captains study the time of year, current, weather patterns and much more to ensure our trips go to the best snorkeling location each and every day. Some of our popular reef locations are Sand Key Light House, Eastern Dry Rocks and a few other secret locations

Depending on the reef location our sail out to the reef can take up to 40 minutes. Our brand new snorkeling catamaran is not only Key West’s newest but the fastest as well. Beating all other boats out to ensure we get the best spot as well as ensuring our guests the most time in the water.

Knowing how to swim is highly recommended. We do provide various life jackets and BC vests to accommodate all levels of swimming experience. Additionally we have swim noodles our snorkelers can use for additional comfort.

We have a large staircase the crew will deploy into the water. It makes it really easy to get in and out. The boat also has a platform at the back of the boat which allows for easy access in and out of the water. The Florida Keys Island Offering The Most Stunning Coral Reef Snorkeling In The State

A little more than an hour south of Miami, travel through Everglades National Park on U.S. Highway 1 to the island of Key Largo, where you'll experience a nature park beneath your feet. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park's entrance is located off U.S. 1 at mile marker 102.5. For an $8 vehicle fee, plus 50 cents per occupant, you'll enter a Florida state park where you can only travel by boardwalk and boat.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which is open every day at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset, is the country's first underwater park. Once you're there, you can explore the park on foot through short boardwalk hikes and beaches and more extensively from inside kayaks and aboard glass-bottomed boats. Best of all, it's the perfect location for snorkeling on the Florida coast. With the mission to protect the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., the park's 70 nautical square miles of the Florida Reef's clear water make it a paradise for encountering ancient sea life.

Besides movie buffs hunting down Humphrey Bogart-themed locations like the Caribbean Club (the exterior location for the 1948 film "Key Largo"), visitors to Key Largo and the Florida Keys will find themselves spending most of their time on the water. You can swim with dolphins at The Keys Swim with Dolphins, parasail at mile marker 104 (a 10- to 15-minute tandem sail with Key Largo Parasail costs $89 per person), or cruise the Florida bay for dinner and drinks on a Tripadvisor top-rated floating tiki bar, Cruisin' Tikis .

Venture into the waters of Key West for snorkeling and scuba diving

Pennecamp offers visitors awe-inspiring beauty. Exploring mangrove and seagrass areas is the best place to start. These shallow habitats host a variety of exotic sea life, from seahorses and lobsters to multicolored sponges and sea stars. However, the shallow, often sheltered, reefs here require snorkelers to proceed safely and take care to avoid contact with the habitats or creatures they're viewing.

While Pennekamp State Park is easily accessible by car from the mainland, it's not the only reason that Key Largo is one of the best islands for snorkeling in the world . Charter a boat 6 miles off the coast with your own snorkeling gear to visit Molasses Reef. This is a preserve within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary known for its centuries-old orange-brown, greenish-brown or greyish-brown coral clusters. The Grecian Rocks, another reef that's about 4.5 miles from shore, is a sheltered snorkeling area that's ideal for windy days on the water. The state park also offers equipment rentals for fins, masks, and snorkels if you don't have your own.

Be aware that these corals are under threat from warming waters and acidification, making it essential to check your sunscreen for harmful ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate before diving to see these reefs. Too afraid of your climate footprint on the real-life reefs? You can always check out the 360-degree Coral Cam, a livestream from the coral reef, at the visitor center of Pennecamp.

Everything you need to enjoy the park is available to rent

Not only can you rent snorkeling gear from the state park, but you can also book boar tours through Pennekamp park as well. A two-and-a-half-hour boat ride with a group guide costs $45 and will take you and up to five of your friends. Boats depart every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily, though check the schedule ahead of time — times might vary by season. If you're not keen on being in the water, glass-bottom boat tours depart in the morning, at noon, and after noon each day. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are also available from the park's rental service. You can also bring your own boating vessel and use a ramp at the park for a $10-a-day fee.

Private boat charters from Key Largo with Key Largo Scuba Diving, Sea Dwellers, Island Adventures, and other tour providers can cost anywhere from $70 to upward of $600. Be sure to ask if snorkel or scuba equipment is included in the rental price. The price quoted can either be per-person, per-vessel, or per-hour. Remember to clarify these details before taking out your charter.

That's not the only thing you need to check before enjoying a snorkeling vacation.
