Winthrop University is a public institution that was founded in 1886. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 3,787 (fall 2023), its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 456 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Winthrop University's ranking in the 2025 edition of Best Colleges is Regional Universities South, #12. Winthrop University is located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Freshmen and sophomores must live on campus, unless they commute from a parent's home that's within a 50-mile radius of the school. Undergraduates have more than 40 majors to choose from. Outside of class, Winthrop students have more than 150 student organizations to check out, including a sizeable Greek life program.
The Winthrop Eagles athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference and are traditionally dominant in men's basketball. The school community comes together for notable events such as Big Man on Campus, an all-male beauty pageant and fundraiser. Graduate students can complete degrees through the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Business Administration , among other academic departments. Notable alumni of Winthrop University include Bob Crawford, a member of the band The Avett Brothers, and Mary Esther Gaulden Jagger, who helped found the National Organization for Women.
