Mykonos beach and swimming pool.

The Branco Mykonos Hotel is one of my favorite beach hotels in Mykonos . Swimming and weather are best in Mykonos from June to September.

When is the best time to visit Mykonos? My favorite time to visit Mykonos is between June and September when the weather is hot and the water is warm enough for swimming. May and October offer warm weather, thinner crowds, and cheaper hotel rates; but some hotels, restaurants, bars, and clubs may be closed during this time. I don’t recommend visiting Mykonos between November and March. If visiting outside of high season it’s best to stay in Mykonos Town . Me and my son during a July visit to Mykonos. Mykonos January Weather: Cold, windy, some rain. 115 sunshine hours Mykonos February Weather: Cold, windy, rainy. 150 sunshine hours Mykonos March Weather: Mild, windy, occasional rain. 200 sunshine hours Mykonos April Weather: Mild, less windy, some rain. 260 sunshine hours Mykonos May Weather: Warm, sunny, little wind. 300 sunshine hours Mykonos June Weather: Hot, sunny, breezy. 335 sunshine hours Mykonos July Weather: Very hot, sunny, breezy. 375 sunshine hours Mykonos August Weather: Very hot, sunny, windy. 355 sunshine hours Mykonos September Weather: Hot, sunny, less windy. 290 sunshine hours Mykonos October Weather: Warm, wind increases, some rain. 235 sunshine hours Mykonos November Weather: Cooler, windy, more rain. 170 sunshine hours Mykonos December Weather: Cold, very windy, rainy. 115 sunshine hours

Best time to stay in Mykonos Town.

Mykonos Town is best to visit from late May to early October.

Best Time to Party in Mykonos : The Mykonos beach clubs and parties with DJs run from late June until mid-September with the high point being late July and August. There’s great nightlife in Mykonos Town from May to early October. Best Time for Good Weather in Mykonos : The warmest weather in Mykonos (and all the Greek islands) is between June and September when it’s sunny, hot, and the water is perfect for swimming. Water temperature heats throughout the summer months and is warmest in August and early September. Since most people visit for the great Mykonos beaches (and related nightlife) it’s pretty quiet here in May and October though the weather is still very nice. Best Time for Greek Island Hopping : There are some incredible islands ( Santorini , Naxos , and Paros are the best) just a short ferry ride from Mykonos. Hopping on a ferry and exploring these nearby islands is a highlight of traveling to Greece. Santorini has a longer tourist season than the other Greek islands so you can happily visit there anytime between late April and early November. For the other islands mid-May to early October is best. Best Time for Visiting Mykonos and Santorini : There are daily Greek ferries from Athens to Mykonos year-round, but ferries between Santorini and Mykonos only run in the tourist season. Direct Mykonos-Santorini ferries usually start in early April and end in late October. In April, May, and October this will often be a smaller SeaJet ferry (that can have a bumpy ride). From June to September there will also be a larger car ferry and high speed catamaran that have a smoother feel. If you visit when there is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Santorini (usually, November to March) you’ll have to go via Athens (fly or ferry). Best Time for Saving Money in Mykonos : Hotels are much cheaper in the shoulder season (April, May, and October) than in the summer months but there’s also a lot less going on so you need to weigh the pros and cons. Transportation, food, and drink prices tend not to vary much by season. If you want good weather but cheap hotels then late May, early June, late September, or early October are great times. There are no guarantees but the first three weeks of October can often surprise visitors with great weather.

Best time to party in Mykonos.

Mykonos beach clubs are at their best from mid-June to mid-September.

Mykonos Travel Seasons High Season (July to early September) : Hot, sunny weather with lots of people – but never so many that it’s unenjoyable. Prices are at their peak. The seawater at its warmest and best for swimming. Ferries and flights run with the greatest frequency. If you’re going to Mykonos for the nightlife then this is the time to visit. For first-time visitors, weather and nightlife are often the most important factors, and the high-season months offer exactly what they’re coveting. Shoulder Season (May and June, September and early October) : Great weather. Sunny and warm but not blazingly hot like the summer. Tourists are around but it’s never crowded. Everything is open in June and September but May and October will definitely see some closed doors. The sea might not be warm enough for swimming in May and October. Low Season (late October to April) : This is winter and that means gray skies, cool weather, and rain. Few hotels and restaurants are operating (but enough to get by). Ferries and flights have very limited schedules though there’ll be at least one ferry a day going to Athens and Syros but not usually not other islands like Santorini, Naxos, or Paros. Mykonos Weather by Month

Swimming and kayaking in Mykonos.

Swimming and water activities are best in the warm months of June, July, August, and September. The best tours and things to do in Mykonos are open and running during the spring, summer, and early fall months.

Mykonos Weather in March : Weather is still cool but winter is ending and businesses are slowly starting to open. Almost half of the restaurants and hotels will be open by the end of the month. Mykonos Weather in April : Weather is getting warmer and it’s possible to have some warm days by the end of the month when swimming and sunbathing feels possible. By the end of the month, 75% of the tourist business will be open. Nightlife is still quiet but a few bars in Mykonos Town will be open and have something going on. Mykonos Weather in May : By mid-month summer feels like it’s arrived. All hotels and restaurants are open, the weather is getting nice, the beaches clubs are opening, and tourists are starting to arrive in significant numbers. There is plenty of nightlife options in Mykonos Town. Mykonos Weather in June : Great weather, everything open, and nightlife is thumping. Beach parties with DJs start about mid-month. Mykonos Weather in July : Almost the height of summer but still a little quieter than August. Hot weather, huge beach parties, and Mykonos Town bars are crazy (and fun). Mykonos in August : The busiest month on Mykonos with the most club parties, the craziest nightlife (in town and at the beach), and beautiful weather (though it can be windier than July and September). Mykonos Weather in September : The nightlife and activity quiets a bit but still lots going on, everything open, and great weather. The last big club party takes place sometime around mid-September. Mykonos Weather in October : Early October is still tourist season with good beach weather and nightlife in Mykonos Town but by mid-month many hotels and restaurants start to close. By the end of October the island is feeling very quiet. Mykonos Weather in November : Almost like winter but there’s still a little bit going on in Mykonos Town. With some good luck and a late-season warm spell it’s possible to swim in early November but for the most part the beaches are deserted. Mykonos Weather in Winter (December to February) : The island is very quiet in winter. Weather is temperate by northern European standards – warmish, sunny days are not unusual – but be prepared for plenty of rain, grey skies, and chilly winds. Most businesses are closed but there’s always enough open to get by.

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave

Hi Dave, Thanks for your detailed information on Mykonos! It’s helped us plan our vacation for early May. Just wanted to know if we could do beach hopping by water taxi? Have heard the water taxi is not operational till late May. Thanks

' src=

Late May is when I have usually seen it start up. But Mykonos is getting busier earlier in May, so I would not be surprised if it started in early May next year. If it’s not running you can still take the bus to Platis Gialos and walk to either Paraga or Paradise beaches, then bus back.

' src=

Hi Dave, Love the info here, thank you!

Planning to visit Mykonos 18-23 April (possibly over Easter weekend). Just wondering if it will be really quiet and if it’s worth visiting? Not fussed about clubs etc but would like to try out some restaurants etc. Will there be ferries to santorini by any chance?

Would you recommend Santorini over Mykonos during this time (or are they both pretty similar around this time).

Thanks so much!

I love being in Santorini over Easter (and in April) as there is plenty open and lots going on. Mykonos will have some restaurants open but probably not all. Santorini will be almost completely open by mid-late April.

Hi Dave I intend to visit Greece in October last week. Will travel to Mykonos on 21st Oct. My plan is to visit Mykonos, Santorini, Crete primarily. I have 14 days in my hand. I will be leaving from Greece on 3rd November. 1. Is this a good time considering that I would love to Swim? 2. Will Mynokos clubs be open around this time? 3. Can you kindly recommend an itinerary?

1. With some good luck you might still be able to swim but for most people it’s too chilly. That said, you can still get some very warm days in late October and as long as you’re ok with cool (not cold) water you’ll be able to jump in. 2. Mykonos clubs close by late September. There should still be a few bars open in Mykonos Town. 3. I would avoid Mykonos and stick to Santorini and Crete as they remain busy, open, and attractive (lots of non-beach attractions) well into November. Just be sure there is a Santorini-Crete ferry running on the day you require.

I hope my opinions are of some help.

Hi Dave, my travel friend and I have never been to Greece and are planning a birthday trip this October 12-16. We would like to visit multiple islands. We are in our early 40’s and enjoy an active beach and club scene. I’ve seen online that the tourist season ends early October and restaurants and stores may be closed mid-October. Can you help us with the following questions?

1) For mid-October, what island is best to fly into and get a great 5-star hotel? 2) We want to visit as many islands as possible. Should we get different hotels to visit and stay there or should we plan for day trips to the different islands daily and stay on one island? 3) Which island do you suggest for mid-October that has great nightlife and great restaurants still open?

We really want to book our flight and accommodations within the week but will change our destination if the tourist season and weather does not permit a great birthday vacation. Any information will be so appreciated!

Many thanks!

Santorini has the most five-star hotels and the most flights in October so that’s what I’d recommend. Day trips are generally not advised. Much better to move to a different island and not waste time going back and forth. And finally, Santorini is the busiest island and has the most active dining and nightlife scene in October.

Hi Dave, Thanks for your lovely and informative site. I still have a small question. My wife and I are planning a visit to Mykonos in April, 2nd week. Although we do not want crazy parties to attend to, we still love a bit of nightlife and a small beach party kind of. Heard somewhere that Guapaloca will open by the 1st of April for beach parties. Can you pls give us the exact info on this? If not in Guapaloca, is there any possibility of any beach party during that period? Thanks in advance.

Guapaloca will open in April but will be quiet. For more buzz and more open bars stay in Mykonos Town.

' src=

Great website Dave. It’s helped us immensely with planning our first trip to Greece. Will there be much of a nightlife (beach parties, beach clubs) in Mykonos in the first week of October? Alternatively, seeing as there’s more of a local population in Paros, will we actually be better off in Paros for parties?

Mykonos beach clubs and beach parties will be long over by early October – though there will still be some nightlife in Mykonos Town. Paros will be quieter still. In October and early November I recommend being in Santorini if you want any nightlife.

' src=

Hi Dave, First, thank you! I love your guides! My family (husband and boys aged 17 and 18) will be in Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini April 18-27. We know Mykonos will be quiet, but the boys really want to go to Delos. I thought we’d spend two day and two nights in Mykonos. One day for Delos and then Mykonos town, and the next day relax by a hotel pool or maybe check out a beach or two. Do you think we should stay in town and take a bus to see beach or stay at a beach hotel? If beach hotel, we were considering Petinos Beach or Branco Mykonos. If in town, Semeli. Just don’t know whether beach hotels will be so dead that we’d prefer to be in town. I do think we will be exhausted from three packed days of sightseeing, and want the Monday to totally chill before going to Santorini Tuesday. Just not sure whether that warrants staying at the beach over town. Thanks for your help!

I definitely recommend staying in Mykonos Town. Go to Delos and rent a car to see the island’s countryside (which is at its greenest in April). Many people love visiting Mykonos in the spring when it’s calm, quiet, and beautiful. But do be prepared for over half of shops and restaurants to be closed.

' src=

My fiancé and I are looking into honeymooning in Greece in early June. We were recommended to do 2 nights Athens, 4 nights Mykonos, and 4 nights Santorini. We definitely want to go to Athens and Santorini but we are unsure about Mykonos. We were suggested Mykonos over Naxos or another island because of the time of year we are going. We are a couple in our early 30’s. We want to relax on our honeymoon at pools and the beaches but also spend a good chunk of time exploring (possibly renting ATVs) and sightseeing. Which island would you recommend? Thanks!

Both are great islands but I’d recommend Naxos for you. They both have wonderful beaches. Mykonos has more luxurious hotels and much more nightlife. Naxos has more history (though Mykonos does offer day trips to nearby Delos) and more interesting inland villages. Naxos is larger and the popular spots are more spread out making zipping around on an ATV less appealing – I prefer a rental car on all islands but especially for a large island like Naxos.

' src=

I am getting married in March and plan to visit Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos – specifically between 13 to 23 march. From what I have read, it seems march is not a great time for Mykonos as we wont be able to enjoy the nightlife. Should I still continue with the above itinerary or could you suggest some other place to visit in Greece.

Not only is Mykonos very quiet in March but there might not be any ferries between Mykonos and Santorini (until later in March or even April). It’s better to visit Naxos and Santorini as they are connected by a daily year-round ferry and Naxos will have more to see and do in the off-season (though still quiet).

' src=

Getting Married in Greece in September.

My fiancee and I are planning on getting married in Tinos around September 25th. We were thinking Tinos as it is still very close to Mykonos but a little less expensive. Our concern is that the weather and the nightlife won’t be good enough to entice people to fly from Australia to Greece. Can you describe the weather from morning till night around Mykonons at end of September? We need to know if it will be too cold and windy to have an outdoor wedding at night at that time of year.

Thanks very much!

There are no guarantees with the weather. Usually the weather is nice for swimming and sunbathing in late September and early October. But after mid-September anything is possible including the odd wet and chilly day. Nightlife on Tinos in late September will be quiet but there are some local bars that stay open year-round so you should be able to find something. If you could move your wedding date up two weeks your odds on good weather and more active nightlife increase markedly (but perhaps that’s not possible for you).

' src=

I am considering hitting Mykonos on a Greece trip for Easter Holy Week. I do not need any clubs, but it would be nice if it did not feel like a ghost town at night when going out for dinner and some drinks. Would you expect somewhat decent nightlife because it’s Holy Week and late April? Or still too early? Thanks.

April (excluding Easter) is very quiet though there is still enough open to get by. The week of Easter will definitely be busier than usual. Still quiet by summer standards but yes there’s an uptick in activity and nightlife.

' src=

My friends and I have a flight from Mykonos to Paris at 12:45pm. The earliest ferry that day (we are coming from Naxos) arrives at port at 11:25am. Is it too ambitious to think we will make our flight? Additionally, do you have any insight into international departures from Mykonos airport?

Thank you! Katie

The Mykonos airport is a bit of a disaster. Planes are usually late leaving and boarding and security are slow and painful. You probably would make your flight, unfortunately you can’t really plan on it working out that way. If it was me I’d take a different (earlier) ferry.

' src=

I am planning for a holiday with my wife in Greece with few days in Athens, Mykonos island, and Santorini island in the month of November. This may be around mid November or so. I want to know will I get a ferry or not? How will be the weather? Will beaches be open? Prakhar Deep

There will be ferries to Santorini (from Athens) and ferries to Mykonos (from Athens) but not ferries between Santorini and Mykonos. You’d have to go via another island, or more likely, Athens. Beaches are always “open” but will the weather and sea be warm enough for swimming? Unlikely. Maybe in early November with an unusual warm burst but most years it’s coolish by early to mid November.

' src=

Thanks for sharing nice information Dave !

A quick question. Traveling to Mykonos from 30th April to 3rd May for honeymoon. Not much into partying. Planning to relax with my partner. Would good hotels, spa, or cafe be open in late April and early May? Vikram

Yes, the island will still be quiet but no problem finding good hotels, a spa, and plenty of places to eat and drink.

' src=

My Fiance and I are planning our Honeymoon to Greece in early October. We want to do Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos. I am having trouble figuring out the best way to see and get to all of these places (flight or ferry). Any suggestions. Brittany

I would fly to Santorini (most flights are with Aegean), then ferry to Mykonos (with Hellenic Seaways), then ferry to Athens (Blue Star or Hellenic). Early October is a great time to visit.

' src=

Hi Dave. I am planning to host a small group for a half day (sunset cruise) in Santorini. Do you happen to have a recommendation for a private, half-day catamaran that includes dinner/drinks? It will be for 6 people. Thanks.

You can read this page about my favorite tours on Santorini . Pretty much all boat tours of the caldera include food and drinks.

' src=

Will the clubs be open in late May? May 26 to June 1? Which one would you recommend for straight girls age 25, 21 and 19? And finally what is the minimum age to enter?

Both Cavo Paradiso and Paradise Club at Paradise Beach will have parties with DJs on the weekend by late May. (These are the two biggest dance clubs in Mykonos but they don’t really get going until late June.) In Mykonos Town Skandinavian Bar should be rocking by late May – but just gets crazier in the summer.

This Gorgeous Greek Island Has More Than 20 Beaches — How to Plan the Perfect Visit

Mykonos is also known for its epic party scene, charming villages, and gorgeous resorts.

best time to visit mykonos to party

Adam Jones/Getty Images

The Greek island of Mykonos has long beckoned travelers with its whitewashed homes, crystal-clear waters, rich culture, and, of course, fantastic parties. And that's just the beginning.

"It’s a lively town that offers a perfect mix of boutique properties, beautiful beaches, local shops, and a hot food and nightlife scene. Its international airport and proximity to the other Greek islands , as well as to Athens, make it an easy destination to access and an ideal spot to add to a longer itinerary," Liam Dunch, Abercrombie & Kent's global group product manager for Europe, shared with Travel + Leisure .

Shannon Yates, a country specialist for Greece at Audley Travel, agrees, noting that the beaches are the best in the region, and reason enough to visit.

"Mykonos has some of the best beaches in the Cyclades. Due to the shape of the island, lots of beaches are nestled into coves that are relatively protected from wind, making for pleasant beach days," Yates says. "The sand is also high quality, the water is the quintessential turquoise color we think of when we think of a Greek island, and the weather is reliably warm."

Best Hotels and Resorts

Katikies mykonos.

Located above the Agios Ioannis beach, Katikies Mykonos offers both fantastic views and intimate charm. Here, guests can book oversized, light-filled suites, which open to private patios with plunge pools. And when you're ready for a bite, head right to Botrini’s Mykonos, the on-site fine-dining restaurant serving delicious Greek cuisine.

Cavo Tagoo , which also comes with a privileged location near Mykonos Town, is beloved for its commitment to minimalist, whitewashed decor with splashes of decadent gold hues throughout. As for the common spaces, guests can dive into the property's stunning infinity pool that disappears into the horizon, unwind in the spa, and dine at Meraki Restaurant, which highlights Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.

Kalesma Mykono

Kalesma Mykonos , voted one of T+L readers' favorite hotels in Greece in the 2024 World's Best Awards , is as stunning as a hotel can get. The luxury resort sits atop a hill, providing panoramic views from every corner. The resort embraces a minimalist style that's both soothing and helps put the focus back on the island's natural beauty. Each of the spacious, airy suites comes with chic furnishings and opens to a patio with private plunge pools, so guests always feel like they're in complete solitude. Kalesma Mykonos also has several fantastic dining venues, too, including Pere Ubu, which specializes in Greek small plates.

Cali Mykonos

Cali Mykonos , located on Kalafatis Beach, perfectly blends traditional Greek design with a more contemporary aesthetic featuring earth-toned walls, white and cream furnishings, and suites with private plunge pools and sea views. The hotel also has plenty of wellness offerings, including regular yoga sessions, a state-of-the-art gym, and a brand-new spa opening in 2025.

Best Things to Do

Visit the windmills..

No visit to Mykonos is complete without a stroll through the iconic windmills of Kato Mili. The windmills, some of which were built between the 15th and 16th centuries, have become Instagram famous in their own right, thanks to their picture-perfect appearance and location. Swing by during sunset to see them with the crowds, or head there in the early morning to have them a bit more to yourself.

See Little Venice.

Explore the charming district known as Little Venice, an area filled with colorful buildings sitting on the water's edge. The spot is known for its utter romance and distinct architecture, with buildings featuring balconies hovering over the water — these were used by Greeks to load their goods directly onto boats and (hopefully) avoid pirates.

Walk and shop around Chora.

Spend some time walking through the main village of Chora, a.k.a. Mykonos Town, weaving your way through the narrow streets and dipping in and out of stores to find the perfect souvenir.

Hit the beach.

There are 22 official beaches and several other unofficial options to spend your days on while on Mykonos. There's Ornos, the ideal spot for those seeking sandy shores and fantastic food, Platis Gialos, which has a bit more of a scene, and Elia, for anyone wanting to sunbathe while avoiding tan lines, if you catch our drift.

Best Nightlife

Cavo paradiso.

Dance the day and night away at Cavo Paradiso , a club that sits on a cliff's edge, offering fantastic views and vibes. Come to catch a DJ performance and see if you can make it to its 7 a.m. closing time.

Skandinavian Bar & Disco

Skandinavian Bar & Disco has kept the party going since the late 1970s. Here, guests can dance between three rooms, including an open-air courtyard. Book a table, bottle service, or even a special "last fling before the ring" package for a perfect bachelor or bachelorette experience.

Paradise Club

Party right on the sand at the open-air Paradise Beach Club , which attracts thousands of revelers who want to dance all day and night. You can come and go as you please — the party will still be going when you come back.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Mykonos is during its summer season, between late May and late September. This when the weather is at its prime, with temperatures averaging between the high 70s and mid-80s, according to Weather Spark . However, this is also when the island is at its busiest, with tourists flocking to the beaches, clubs, and restaurants. So, if you're hoping to see the island when it's a bit calmer, consider doing during another time. According to Yates, "The best time to visit Mykonos is outside the busy summer peaks, during spring (April to June) and early fall (September and October). Temperatures are warm but not stifling, and destinations are open but relatively quiet." And coming in mid-September means you may be able to hit the Harvest Festival , where you can dine and drink with the locals.

How to Get There

Mykonos is easily accessible by plane thanks to the Mykonos International Airport, located just a quick drive from Mykonos Town. The airport is serviced by airlines like Aegean, Air France, EasyJet, and Lufthansa, with most flights connecting through Athens.

The island is also serviced by regular ferries, which connect to several other islands, as well as direct ferries to and from Athens. Direct ferries take about 2.5 hours.

Villages to See

Mykonos town.

Mykonos Town is the heart of the island. Known for its vibrant nightlife, dining venues, and picture-perfect cobblestone streets, it's a place worth exploring for at least a full afternoon during your stay.

The beach village of Ornos is also worth an entire day's excursion. Here, travelers can lounge on the sand or rent loungers for extra comfort before visiting the nearby restaurants for some of the best Greek food on the island.

Escape the chaos of the island's more touristy areas with a visit to the traditional village of Ano Mera. Though it's the second-largest village on Mykonos, it's still considerably smaller than Mykonos Town. And there's lots to do here, too, like visit the 16th-century monastery, Panagia Tourliani; sip varietals from the wineries; and explore the Gyzi Castle.

How to Get Around

Renting a car is a great choice for anyone looking to explore more of the island on their own schedule. There are plenty of major car rental services available, including Hertz, Europcar, and Budget.

By Public Transit

Mykonos has a robust bus system that takes travelers to and from major towns and beaches.

Travelers can also opt to get around via moped, which can be easily rented at several retailers on the island. Just make sure to be extra cautious and always wear a helmet.

Best Times To Visit Mykonos

The best time to visit Mykonos is September and October. Sitting in the Aegean Sea, this island's weather permits a year-round flow of tourists, but in September and October you'll see that the large crowds have left, the water remains warm and the hotel rates descend back into a reasonable range. The spring, before the summer rush comes, is also a great (and affordable) vacation time. Mykonos experiences a typical Mediterranean winter: mild with temps that dip to the mid-50s. June, July and August are especially busy; temperatures average in the upper 70s and 80s, and there are nonstop parties and pricey hotel rates.

best time to visit mykonos to party

Mykonos island is not the same every month of the year. The best time to visit Mykonos depends on your situation but in general, I would avoid visiting in July or August as these are the busiest and most crowded months for the island.

In reality, the best time to go to Mykonos really depends on what you are looking for from your trip to this magnificent greek island.

BEST HOTEL IN MYKONOS: Nomad Mykonos

BUT ALSO CHECK:

  • 5 Star: Anax
  • For Couples: Boheme
  • For Private Pool: Cavo Tagoo
  • For Beach: Santa Marina
  • For Families: Mykonos Bay
  • For Party: Rocabella
  • For Honeymoon: Palladium
  • In Mykonos Town: Bill & Coo

The best summer weather you will get in Mykonos is between June and September but this is also the time when the island is very crowded and extremely expensive.

  • Best Time for activities, hiking, wine-tasting, restaurants and mild sunny weather (but not too hot):   May, October
  • Best Time for parties, buzz, crowds:   July and August (most famous DJs come to Mykonos in July and August); there are definitely more things to do in Mykonos than just parties and beach life though
  • 15th of August:   massive celebration in Greece and a Bank Holiday (St.Mary’s day)
  • Greek Easter:  usually within April ( check here )
  • Many businesses, hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars close:   between and including November-March
  • Avoid August if possible!!! Mykonos is very crowded and super expensive during August and July

How crowded is Mykonos during the year ?

(the following numbers are not official statistics but more of a feeling after visiting the island for many years and in different months)

best time to visit mykonos to party

January & February:  10% crowded – ( Low Season  – many restaurants, hotels and businesses will be closed, beaches will be empty but the island is not “dead”…Mykonos Town is the best place to stay, eat and entertain yourself during the winter time)

March:  20% crowded – ( Low Season  –but slightly more people start to visit the island as the high season approaches, many restaurants, hotels and businesses will be closed or just about to open, beaches will probably be empty but the island is definitely not “dead”…Again Mykonos Town is the best place to stay and eat;this is the month with the most unpredictable weather in Greece

April:  40% crowded – ( Shoulder Season  – the slow beginning of the high season; most restaurants, beach bars, cafes, and businesses open in April since it is also the  Greek Easter  and lots of Greeks visit the island to start preparing for the coming high season)

May:  70% crowded – ( Shoulder Season  – All of the businesses of the island will be 100% open and operational but the island is still not full, the beaches are getting busier every day and the weather is becoming better and better with lower chances of chill days or rain)

June:  90% crowded – ( High Season  – almost at full capacity but not yet super busy…everything will be open, all beach bars are running at full speed; this is the best time of theyear to visit mykonos in my opinion; bear in mind that there is a bank holiday in Greece in mid-June (Holy Spirit Monday) and it is extremely common for Greeks to visit Mykonos that day!

July:  100% crowded – ( High Season  – the heart of the high season and when the island gets super busy and crowded, but you will still have a great time while the weather is super hot – do expect to spend most of your time on the beach or the swimming pool – July is not as busy as in August though)

August:  110% crowded – ( High Season  – the busiest month for Mykonos, try to avoid if possible because everything becomes more complicated and takes more time with all the crowds)

September:  90% crowded – ( Shoulder Season  –  it will still feel like the long tail of August some times but it will get less busy towards the end of the month – weather still feels like summer and you should still be able to swim in the sea)

October:  70% crowded ( Shoulder Season  – the weather gets colder but you can still possibly enjoy a swim in the sea or the pool – for many of the businesses October is their last operational month for the year)

November:  30% crowded ( Low Season  – the early days of winter and the month where the weather gets considerably colder – many businesses, hotels, and restaurants will be closed)

December:  10% crowded ( Low Season  – the heart of the low season and one of the coldest months in Mykonos; no swimming, many closed businesses and shops)

To put it simply:

November-December-January-February-March:  Low Season/ most businesses will be closed

April-May-September-October:  Shoulder Season / all businesses will be open

June-July-August: HIgh Season / all businesses open (massive crowds and extremely high prices everywhere)

(it is true that the last years, the High or Peak Season has started to extend in late May and early September and I do believe this trend will continue till the whole of the year is basically high season for the island!)

So, let’s see one by one all of your options, shall we?

Best Time to visit Mykonos for hot weather, swimming at the beaches or pools

panormos beach mykonos

The hottest weather in Mykonos is in June, July, August, September but even May and October are pretty hot. In October the sea water will probably be warmer than in May as it has been warmed all summer long.

Try to avoid July and August as much as possible because the island is super crowded and the shops are always very busy.

It’s not that you won’t have a great time…it’s just that you might feel overwhelmed with the thousands of people crowding in the small street of Mykonos City every night. I always visit the island between mid-September till mid-October while the weather feels really nice to swim and all the businesses are still open. Most businesses (restaurants, hotels, cafes, beach bars) of the island close at the end of October. So, if swimming and great weather is your only concern then mid to end September and early October is the best time for you!

Best time to visit Mykonos for sightseeing, hiking and great food but without hot weather

best time to visit mykonos to party

April, May, October and November (for most of the time) have awesome weather with low chances of rain, temperatures around 15-20 degrees Celsius and mostly sunny. If you are not really a big fan of swimming or weather that makes you sweat and it’s absolutely fine for you if you don’t wear a t-shirt, shorts, and bikinis 24/7 then you should better visit Mykonos in April, May or October (the shoulder seasons).

Best time to visit Mykonos to party

mykonos party nightlife

The best time to go to Mykonos for party is July and August. This is when everything really happens on the island and basically when all famous DJs are playing in Mykonos. If you are going to party, you will do it in these 2 months (and it’d be awesome!). Most of the famous DJs in the world visit the island in July, August and sometimes in September so your chances of having an awesome party anywhere on the island are very high during these 2 months. This of course does not mean that there are no parties in June or in October. There is still life in Mykonos during those 2 months but it’s definitely not the same parties as they are in July and August.

Best time to visit Santorini for a solo traveller

It really depends again on what you are looking for from your travel but if you are looking to meet people or just network with other travellers then July and August are the best months to visit Mykonos. If you are looking to see the place but not being super lonely then I would say June or September is the best option for you.

Best time to visit Mykonos for honeymoon

best time to visit mykonos to party

The best time to visit Mykonos for honeymoon is June. You will get amazing sunny warm weather but fewer tourists and crowds everywhere. I also recommend visiting Mykonos in September as in both these 2 months the island would feel not to crowded but also not too empty and all businesses will be open and operational.

Best time to visit Mykonos for cheap hotels

You should look for any low season deals which means any date between November-March. However, you may find some good deals in April and October as well.

Best time to visit Mykonos for greek island hopping

ferry to santorini

If the main purpose of visiting Mykonos is to use it as your base to visit other greek islands (such as Santorini for example) then you need a time when you will get the most available options of flights and ferries between the islands. This time is June, July, August and September. These are the best months to do your island hopping in Greece. But especially in July and August you should expect lots of crowds in Santorini as well.

Read Also:   Best Greek Islands Near Mykonos

Also, bear in mind that other greek islands (Naxos, Crete, Ios etc) are not that crowded as Santorini or Mykonos and the high season will be absolutely normal (you won’t be alone but you won’t have millions of tourists around you).

Best time to visit Mykonos for a family

mykonos with kids

Mykonos is a very family-friendly place to spend your holidays with your kids. That applies to every greek island really because they’re places with amazing beaches that can be a kid’s heaven to spend a whole day. Greece is also a place with very good and healthy food and lots of amenities around the beach side areas. I believe that the best time to visit Mykonos with kids is in May or September where the crowds will be less visible and the weather won’t be super hot. i highly recommend that you stay in one of the best beach hotels in Mykonos if you are visiting with kids.

The best time to visit Mykonos is in June or September. Mykonos is a place with some of the best beaches in Greece so you should definitely go during the summer months but you must avoid July and August by any means. It goes without saying that Mykonos is an exceptionally expensive place to visit but there are some cheap hotels in Mykonos that you can trust. If you are visiting with kids then you should also avoid the crowds of July and August and I also recommend that you stay close to one of the beaches in Mykonos so the kids can enjoy them more easily.

The Best Time to Visit Mykonos

best time to visit mykonos to party

The Greek island of Mykonos is well known for being a cosmopolitan Summer party island but the bustling peak Summer months of June-August aren’t necessarily the best time to visit Mykonos – It all depends on what you seek from a Greek island vacation – Tranquility? Beach parties? Authenticity? Read on to discover the best time to visit Mykonos based on your own needs and interests.

Low Season: Mid October – April

October in mykonos, when is the best time to travel to mykonos.

Mykonos Travel Seasons

High season: july – early september.

For many people, July and August are the best times to visit Mykonos due to the beach parties being in full swing and the weather being at its hottest. Everything is open and there’s a real buzz in the air, especially once the sun goes down.

The island is easily accessible during the high season with multiple ferries and flights each day but accommodation prices are also at their highest. In early September there’s still the buzz of Summer with beach parties continuing for the first two weeks but the crowds have lessened slightly along with the accommodation prices.

Shoulder Seasons: May – June and Mid September – Early October

If you want to enjoy Mykonos without the crowds and without the beach parties, visit during one of the shoulder seasons. The weather is beautiful without being overbearing (perfect if you like hiking and exploring the picturesque villages) and in September-October, the sea is still beautifully balmy though is still chilly in May.

The evenings can be chilly so a long-sleeved top is recommended but otherwise, during the day, you’ll be fine wearing shorts, T-shirt, and swimwear.

best time to visit mykonos to party

The island closes down to tourism in the low season so this is the time to visit if you want to enjoy a slice of authentic Greek island life. Only a few hotels, tavernas, and shops are open (enough for the locals to get by) with ferries operating less frequently, usually just once a day from Pireas with the possibility of less frequent services during stormy weather and flights also only operate via Athens.

best time to visit mykonos to party

From mid-October, the weather gets progressively cooler and wetter but for those who are used to frost and snow from November onwards, Mykonos can seem like a dream come true with the grey wet days broken up with a few days of sunshine.

In early March the blossom is on the trees and in April the island is covered in beautiful wildflowers with the sun warm enough for some sunbathing but the water is still too chilly for all but the bravest swimmers!

Average Temperature and Rainfall for Mykonos

The best months of the year to visit mykono s, may in mykonos.

By the middle of May, it’s safe to say that Summer has arrived with temperatures averaging 19c (66F) through the sea has yet to warm up with water temperatures of 18.8c (65.8F) meaning a potentially chilly entrance!

All of the hotels, tavernas, shops, and tourist activities are open in May, along with the nightclubs in Mykonos Town and also some of the beach clubs and though there aren’t the crowds of Summer, it isn’t dead making it ideal for couples or solo travelers who want to explore the island and enjoy some relaxation time before the young partygoers arrive.

best time to visit mykonos to party

June in Mykonos

The sun has more heat behind it now with average daytime temperatures of 23c (73F) and the sea also warming up nicely to 22.2c (72F). The start of June is still relatively relaxed with the island waking up properly from the middle of the month when the beach parties with DJs kick off which brings the first flourish of youngsters to the island who are looking to have some fun in the sun.

July in Mykonos

Now entering the peak Summer season with the hottest temperatures of the year, the island is a hive of activity with the ferries arriving multiple times a day dispelling both day-trippers from nearby islands and island hoppers along with families and couples looking to enjoy a summer vacation.

The temperature averages 26c (79f) so now is the perfect time to chill by the pool or at the beach (sea temperatures now at 24.2c/75.6F) before hitting the bars and clubs in town or the beach party at night.

best time to visit mykonos to party

August in Mykonos

The busiest month of them all, Mykonos in August is in full swing with families, couples, and partygoers all enjoying the island. The DJs pump out the tunes at the beach, the hotels are almost fully booked, and there’s fun and festivity in the air all around as waiters bring out more frappes, beers, and ice creams!

The average daytime temperature of 25c (77F) is slightly cooler than in July but you should be aware of the strong Northern winds that whip up for a few days at a time as although this breeze helps you sleep at night, it can disrupt the ferries for a couple of days.

September in Mykonos

As the crowds head back to work or school, the island becomes a little less frantic, especially from the middle of the month when the beach parties come to an end allowing the locals to breathe a sigh of relief that another summer party season is over. Now is the time to enjoy sightseeing, quieter beaches, and a return to Greek tranquillity.

Daytime temperatures average 23c (73f) with the sea still beautifully balmy at 23.8c (74.8F). The strong Northern winds can still play havoc with the smaller ferries but now is generally a much better time to explore the island whether you go hiking, cycling, or hiring a car.

Families and couples still flock to Mykonos to soak up some last-minute sunshine and swim time (water temperatures now a little cooler at 21.5C (70.7F) until the middle of the month, the daytime temperatures averaging 19C (66F).

As each week goes by it gets quieter as well as cooler (with the chance of rain as the month progresses) with the majority of tourist bars, tavernas, shops, and hotels closed for the Winter from the 3 rd week of October though still plenty open in Mykonos Town.

My Favourite Time to Visit Mykonos

Personally, as an Athenian woman who loves sightseeing, fine dining, and lazy days on the beach, my favorite time to visit Mykonos is June or September – These ‘goldilocks months’ are just right ,  allowing you to enjoy everything the island has to offer but without the madness, heat, and high prices of July-August.

Best Time to Go to Mykonos to Party

July and August are the months to let your hair down and mingle with the cosmopolitan crowd! Tap your toes to the beat as you relax on a sun lounger during the day, then hit the bars, clubs, and beach parties with international DJs at night.

Best Time to Visit Mykonos for Good Weather and Swimming

Anytime between June – September is fine if you want to splash in the water and top up your tan before heading out to explore the town or beach parties at night. July and August are the most popular months for partygoers but are also the most popular months for families enjoying a summer vacation so avoid these months if you want your Summer holiday to be a little quieter!

Best Time to Go to Mykonos for Budget Travelers

Fewer people mean cheaper prices on accommodation so budget travelers are best off visiting in May or late September-early October however, the party season doesn’t stretch to the shoulder seasons.

best time to visit mykonos to party

Best Time for Island Hopping

June-September is the best time for Greek island hopping as ferries regularly travel back and forwards from Pireas as well as Naxos, Paros, Santorini, etc making it super easy to get from island to island as well as to/from the airport if you’re starting and ending your trip in Athens.

Winter in Mykonos

Parts of Mykonos will seem like a deserted ghost town in the Winter but there’s always enough to get by since the island still has to serve the locals who live here all year. If you want to escape from the world for a while, practice your Greek whilst making new friends, and live quietly and simply as the locals do, Winter is the best time to visit Mykonos.

January - March

What is it like to visit Mykonos in winter?

That is a question for one of the  10,134  locals who inhabit this enchanted island all year long.

Surprisingly, a light dusting of snow greeted them one cold day last January, but it's a rare occurrence.

Mykonos is called the "Island of the Winds," referring to the heavy Meltemi winds from the north. As a result, the shores can be very windy at times, and rain often falls during these colder months.

A typical winter day in Mykonos averages around 55℉ (13℃), with about 11 hours of daylight.

If you're used to snowstorms and freezing temperatures in your hometown, this type of winter sounds ideal.

It may be too cold to swim in the waters, but this should not be a problem if you're an avid surfer with a proper wet suit.

April - May

Mykonos warms up to 61℉ (16℃) in the springtime, which is not exactly hot weather but it is pleasant nonetheless. The rain is less frequent, and the hills are speckled with patches of colorful wildflowers.

The days stretch out a little longer, and you can enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, although it is still not warm enough to swim yet.

June - August; Paradise Beach is Waiting for you!

super paradise beach mykonos Aerial motion shutterstock

Ahhh, now this is perfect beach weather! During the summer months, from early June , the temperature rarely goes above 80℉ (27℃), and the days are long, with the islands sporting the hottest weather of the year. Rainfall is almost non-existent.

Mykonos becomes a thriving mecca for beach-goers, and the entire island is your playground, with huge beach parties being hosted on a daily basis.

When visiting Mykonos in June, you will find that the days are finally hot enough for a refreshing swim, sunbathing, and every kind of water sport you can think of.

It tends to be cooler than neighboring Greek islands because you can feel the more potent effects of the Meltemi winds, especially at sea.

When you're sailing on the water, winds reduce the humidity and increase visibility. They also create tall waves, but you learn quickly to maneuver around them.

If you're looking for a unique sailing adventure, try a  Mykonos sailing trip  that combines the archaeological wonders of Delos and snorkeling near Rhenia Island.

September - October

windmill mykonos Aetherial Images shutterstock

At the end of summer, from early September to early October, the temperature settles to a pleasant 73℉ (23℃), and the sea has warmed to perfection.

A large portion of the summer crowd tapers off, so beach lounge chairs are easier to find. Rainy days slowly return to the island, especially from early October onwards.

The hotels and restaurants are less packed from early September, and most recreational activities are still available.

November - December

By this point in the year, the usual visitors are long gone. They leave with a few new Greek words to add to their vocabulary and endless vacation memories to share with friends and family back home.

The days are noticeably colder, around 60℉ (16℃), and the days become shorter. The winds are still strong, and rainfall is constant, especially in December.

Most water activities are shut down for the season, including many hotels and restaurants. Ferry service is also limited. As a result, we don't recommend visiting Mykonos during those months.

Determine How Much Vacation Time You Need

Turning your dream into a reality starts with a bit of planning and research. Here are some tips to help you create the perfect itinerary for when you visit Mykonos.

How Will You Reach the Island?

ftelia beach mykonos lucamarimedia shutterstock

The most common route to Mykonos is to fly to the Athens airport (ATH - Eleftherios Venizelos).

From there, you would either take a 45-minute connecting flight to Mykonos Airport (JMK) or a more leisurely 2.5-hour ferry ride to the island.

There are plenty of direct Mykonos Santorini ferries, especially until early October when the tourist season officially ends.

If you're lucky, some European cities have direct flights to Mykonos.

Once you arrive on this glorious island, you and your travel companion(s) can reach most places by foot, bicycle, or taxi.

Better yet, use the  bus system  - this is an excellent opportunity for your kids to improve their navigation skills!

You can also rent a moped if you're feeling adventurous, but some prior experience is recommended.

Car rentals are also available when visiting Mykonos, but be aware that some roads leading to the beaches will be winding & narrow in places.

You can also explore some of the more rugged terrains by booking a  private Mykonos jeep safari .

How Many Days Do You Need to Explore the Island and Mykonos Town?

mykonos chora Leanne Vorrias shutterstock

Mykonos is about 33 square miles, eight miles long, and six miles wide. Even though it is a small island, there's quite a lot to see and do.

You can happily savor your vacation time for about five days  in a comfortable hotel near one of our pristine beaches or the bustling, energetic Mykonos Town (Chora), where the Mykonos Town bars will keep you entertained during your vacation nights.

Each location has a different vibe, so if you're looking for  where to stay in Mykonos , you'll want to choose a hotel closest to the activities you love.

What If You Only Have Three Days in Mykonos?

Mykonos eating Stavrarg shutterstock

If the best time to visit Mykonos is only a few days, consider this  Mykonos guide .

  • You'll have plenty of time for unhurried strolling along the beaches, shops, and museums.
  • You can also take an evening trip to Mykonos Town for delectable dining & the hottest dance parties in the Mediterranean.  This is precisely the point of the vacation where people make a mental note to do this more often!
  • Suggestions for two sailing trips (one during the daytime and one in the evening) are included. You will not miss out on any of Mykonos' unique water activities.

Even with limited travel days, you can fit all the Mykonos essentials into a shorter stay.

Visiting Only for One Day?

mykonos from the top bmphotographer shutterstock

Many of our visitors are either cruise ship passengers docked in Mykonos Town for a single day or taking a day trip from another island.

At the same time, there are plenty of people visiting Mykonos during an island-hopping adventure .

They are eager to have the quintessential Mykonos experience but must be back on their ship, ferry, or flight by the evening.

For a stress-free visit, we highly recommend this  one-day Mykonos itinerary . It balances all the pleasures of our island in the sun and gives you the option of one of our popular shore excursions, the  Mykonos Highlights  half-day tour.

Will You Have Time to See Other Islands?

mykonos panoramic Aetherial Images shutterstock

Mykonos island has delightful neighbors like the islands of Santorini and Naxos, but it holds the distinction of being only a 30-minute ferry ride from the sacred island of Delos .

As a result, when you visit Mykonos, you ought to grab the opportunity to explore the nearby islands, as they are only a short ferry ride away.

The Greek island of Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the mythical birthplace of both Apollo (god of the sun) and Artemis (god of the moon). The entire island is uninhabited, and you're welcome to explore the spectacular architecture.

You'll find a wholly unearthed sanctuary to the gods, a port, a theater, elaborate villas, and scattered remains of magnificent pieces of art.

For an even better experience when you visit Mykonos, try a day trip from Mykonos to Delos. You can skip the lines and relive the thrills and achievements of this ancient site with a personal tour guide.

How to Plan Your Trip to Mykonos During Peak Season

mykonos port sunset In Green shutterstock

The best time to visit Mykonos, for most people, is from April to October.

Here's a breakdown of what the year looks like.

  • Summer (June to August):  This is the peak tourist season when the island is most crowded. If you're looking for maximum time at the beach, plenty of water sports, and a lively party atmosphere in the evenings, plan to visit during these months. Everything is open, the hot Mykonos weather is delightful, and you may even run into a celebrity in one of the beach bars!
  • Spring (April & May) and Fall (September & October):  These shoulder season months suit families more due to the good weather, and the warm average sea temperature. You might hesitate to take your kids out of school for an overseas trip during those months, especially in early October, but it is worth it.  Mykonos for families  is an amazing cultural experience for kids of all ages and one they'll never forget.
  • Winter (November to March):  Traveling during these months is best for laid-back visitors who are looking for quiet escapes, cheap hotels, and don't mind the cool weather and lack of crazy parties. Remember, many businesses, even in Mykonos city, will be closed at this time as locals recover from the busy tourist season.

Best Time to Visit Mykonos

Discover the best period for your trip!

The endless sunny days of the summer spotted from the windmills of Chora

The cosmopolitan island of Mykonos is visited by millions of travelers annually since its vibrating nightlife and wonderful shores comprise a pole of attraction for young people, couples, celebrities, and jet setters alike. You will find information about the best time to visit Mykonos below.

Table of contents: • High Season • Shoulder Season • Off-Season

In brief, most visitors book their vacation on the "Island of Winds" between June and August , as the hot weather , sunny days, and pulsating party scene reach their peak. But going to Mykonos during the high season is not the sole option; the island has gradually evolved into an (almost) year-round destination, with considerable emphasis placed on the milder shoulder season.

Let us take a more detailed look at the best time to visit the island, its seasons, along with the best things to do for each of them.

High Season (Summer)

Sunny and hot summer days in Mykonos town

Starting with the most sought-after visiting period, Mykonos’ potential is undeniably at its peak during summertime. From June to late August , the small Cycladic wonder welcomes the majority of its annual visitors. While it does get crowded, especially in its southern and western parts, that should not discourage anyone from having a fantastic time.

Booking Arrangements for Summer Vacation

Firstly, for a pleasant vacation, it is vital to have an equally satisfying accommodation experience . There are plenty of splendid locations in Mykonos to stay at, depending on your expectations and needs.

Lodging in Mykonos Town  (Chora) ensures short distances from the nightlife hotspots, the acclaimed cocktail bars, the cozy boutiques and promenade taverns. It also diminishes the need for a vehicle, as the Town’s bus stations can be reached on foot and allow for frequent and cost-effective trips. Chora’s outskirts provide the same amenities and proximity to the picturesque Windmills and the Venetian Castle among others, while luxury and serenity are present, away from the epicenter of attention. ( View all things to do )

Furthermore, if you are a sports enthusiast or prefer walking to the beach instead of driving, beachfront accommodation should be the go-to option. Shimmering bays like Paradise , Elia , Kalo Livadi , Psarou , Ornos , and Agios Ioannis are among the top regions for that type of lodging.

Keep in mind that once you have decided upon visiting during summertime, booking your accommodation and airplane or ferry tickets (depending on how you choose to travel to and from the island) should be arranged at least 4 to 8 months in advance. Booking the tours, activities and workshops in advance is highly recommended, as they sell out during the high season.

Last but not least, making early dining reservations as well as sunbed reservations will save you tremendous hassle and time. If you prefer discovering Mykonos at a tailor-made pace, book your rental vehicle in Mykonos with Greeka a few months in advance for the best rates available.

Weather Conditions in Summertime

Greece has hot summers, thanks to its Mediterranean position. While temperatures climbing up to 37℃ is ordinary in July and August, the Cycladic islands are not affected as much as the mainland. Especially on Mykonos, the seasonal Meltemi winds during those months maintain temperatures between 19℃ and 29℃.

Enjoy a great summertime on this splendid Aegean island by using sunblock products and avoiding long sun exposure. A light jacket or shawl at night is also recommended.

Tours, Activities & Events during Summer

Mykonos is a thriving Cycladic destination during the high season thus, the available excursions and activities are great additions to any itinerary. To alleviate the blazing sun, a visit to Kalafatis bay, Ftelia, or Korfos will introduce you to the exquisite sports of windsurfing and kitesurfing. For a more relaxed approach, scuba diving or sailing to the intriguing islands of Delos and Rhenia are excellent alternatives.

Take a more detailed look at all available tours & activities as well as the sports and find the best ones for you.

Furthermore, on a more cultural approach to Mykonos, enjoy the numerous events and concerts taking place at the Odysseas Elytis amphitheater in Chora, as well as the famous bays of the island. If you visit around the 15th of August, you can engage in one of the main local and religious events, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is followed by days of feasts and celebrations, where you may interact with the locals for a more authentic experience.

Island-hopping

Island hopping tours from Mykonos constitute the perfect getaway, creating the opportunity of exploring more Aegean destinations for moderate prices. The ferry routes connecting Mykonos with other Cycladic islands are daily and reliable throughout the tourist season.

The top island destinations are  Santorini , Paros and Ios for endless pampering and partying, while Naxos , Koufonisia and Milos offer a serene and welcoming antithesis.

Take a look at the best island-hopping bundles including Mykonos and elevate your Greek vacation.

Shoulder Season (Spring & Autumn)

Windy spring days in Mykonos town

Spring and autumn are exquisite seasons to visit Mykonos without the endless tourist waves and strenuous expenses. Mid-April to late May and September to late October are ideal for switching off and enjoying the laid-back and cozy ambiance. Almost all establishments, tours and day trips are available, while cultural excursions are favored, too.

Weather Conditions

The weather during spring and fall is much milder compared to the hot summer and chillier winter. The daylight time is enough for travelers to get a nice tan, as well as make the most out of their vacation time. With temperatures fluctuating between 18℃ and 23℃, the weather is formidable for any kind of tour and activity. Island hopping to other Aegean destinations is also recommended, along with sailing tours to the intriguing Delos and Rhenia islands.

Booking Arrangements

While much more relaxed than summer, spring and fall have been growing in tourism in the last decade. Booking all airplane or ferry tickets , accommodation and rental vehicles is important. Reserve every facility a couple of months in advance and take advantage of the great offers and prices.

If you plan on visiting during the springtime, specifically during the Easter holidays, it is recommended to check the dates early, as Easter is an inconstant celebration. Additionally, many Greeks grasp the opportunity of workplace vacation and school breaks to visit the Cyclades during that period. Hotels and restaurants will be buzzing with festivities and guests. Staying between 4 and 8 days is ideal for that season.

Advantageous Aspects

Spring and fall turn Mykonos into a fascinating color palette, enhancing its landscapes without the harsh sunlight of summer. There is no congestion in the alleys of Chora or Ano Mera, and traffic is back to its usual levels, allowing for comfortable and swift transportation around the island.

Furthermore, with prices being moderate (with great offers the closer you book to the low months), visitors can try more experiences, flavors and activities. Dine at the top restaurants or the cozy taverns hassle-free. Enjoy your drinks in Little Venice in a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Interaction with the locals is also much easier and more personal.

Moreover, sightseeing is an excellent option too, as visitors can take in the experience without waiting in queues; from the intriguing museums in Chora, the orthodox monasteries near Ano Mera, and the wineries, to the Venetian Castle or the historical Delos island , everything can fit in the itinerary. The nightlife is also active during spring and fall, with many parties and events taking place.

Lastly, while it may be a bit chilly for open water swimming, lounging next to the sea and diving in a heated pool can ideally substitute it.

Off-season (Winter)

Winter days at the windmills of Mykonos

Mykonos has been experiencing a small but steadily growing tourist influx during wintertime. This concerns the period between early November  and  late March . Travelers have been booking their vacation close to the winter holidays, combining the low prices with the tranquility of the island.

While booking tickets and accommodation in the low season doesn't come with packed routes and rooms, it is important to note a few things. The most important thing is to double-check the airplane or ferry routes of your arrival and departure, as they are limited during winter.

Furthermore, upon selecting the lodging of your preference, contact it early to confirm that every facility and amenity will be available. Some hotels limit their amenities in wintertime due to low visitor numbers, while others remain closed until springtime. Staying in town is ideal, as it remains lively and some establishments are operating. The other parts of Mykonos tend to get very quiet during winter. An ideal stay can last for at least 3 to 5 days.

While the Mediterranean winter is much milder than that of central or northern Europe, it can still get chilly with sporadic rainfalls and cloudy days. The temperature is usually between 5℃ and 15℃, but it is pleasant on sunny days. Make sure to pack a warm pair of boots, a coat, a scarf and a trusty umbrella; no excess is required. Open-water swimming during winter is not recommended for beginners, as the waters are icy cold. A heated pool or hot tub will warm and pamper you instead.

Activities & Events

While the seashores are only pleasant for walks, Mykonos offers its cultural and traditional side to winter travelers abundantly. Make sure to visit the informative and well-maintained museums of Chora with their folklore and archaeological displays.

Moreover, sightseeing in the picturesque settlements of Chora and Ano Mera is a great way to discover the Mykonian identity; from the emblematic Windmills and the Venetian Castle to the unique orthodox monasteries and churches, the mosaic of Mykonian beauty will excite you. Alternatively, you may familiarize yourself with the locals during the winter holidays, as many Greeks visit the island and their families there. Lastly, the local taverns and relaxing bars will accompany you during your stay with their mouth-watering delicacies and drinks.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Mykonos?

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: September 11th, 2024

Best time to visit Mykonos

  • Find a Cruise

The best time to visit Mykonos, a popular island in the Cyclades chain, is the shoulder months of May and June, as well as September and October.

Mykonos has a typically Mediterranean climate, which means hot, dry summers and mild winters with some rain. The whole Cyclades chain is prone to strong winds; the famous windmills on Mykonos are a testament to this. The constant wind means summers can be a little cooler than on some of the islands.

Mykonos is encircled by golden sandy beaches and is famed for its white, sugar-cube architecture that’s typical of the Cyclades, making it one of the most popular spots in Greece. Mykonos is also known for its sophisticated nightlife and liberal party scene, which means the peak summer months of July and August are very busy.

Visiting Mykonos by Season

Couple relaxing on Kalafatis Beach in Mykonos

Kalafatis Beach

Late June, July, and August in Mykonos are peak season. The days are long and sunny. By July, the sea is a perfect 74°F (23.5°C) for swimming. The average high in August is 78.5°F (25.8°C), with negligible rainfall and 11.5 daily hours of sunshine.

This is the time to come to Mykonos for beach parties, hip restaurants, and a lively buzz in Chora , or Mykonos Town, the capital.

The weather begins to cool down in fall, although September still enjoys a balmy daily average of 73.8°F (23.2°C), making this arguably the best time to go to Mykonos. The summer crowds are thinning out and the beach clubs and restaurants are still busy. Rainfall is minimal; just 0.4 inches (10mm) in September, although this increases to 2.6 inches (65mm) by November.

By early October, the beach clubs begin to close for winter and the sea may be a little cool for swimming. This is still a wonderful time for walking, though, and exploring Mykonos Town and the neighboring island of Delos.

Winters in Mykonos are mild, although snow is not unheard of. December, January, and February are the wettest months; December, for example, receives 3.9 inches (100mm) of rain on average, which is welcomed in this arid place. Temperatures are still relatively warm though; in January, the coolest month, expect average highs of 51.6°F (10.9°C).

The island will be busy over Christmas, which extends until Epiphany on January 6, but is otherwise quiet during the winter months. Shops and bars close as owners take off for a much-deserved vacation, and there are few visitors.

Best time to visit Mykonos - Little Venice

Little Venice

Mykonos is still cool in March, but by May, average daily temperatures are up to 67.1°F (19.5°C). It’s warm enough for outdoor dining and cocktails in Little Venice, overlooking the water.

This is a lovely time for hiking, as the hills are still green and strewn with wildflowers. If you’re planning an excursion to neighboring Delos, the site of spectacular antiquities dating back more than 2,000 years, you’ll find it blissfully peaceful in May. The soft spring light and wildflowers add to the island’s beauty.

When Is Rainy Season?

November to February are the wettest months on Mykonos when the island receives much-needed rain. In December and January, it rains on an average of 10 days per month. The island is quiet during this time, with many businesses closed for winter.

When Is High Season?

Best time to visit Mykonos - Chora town

Mykonos Town

High season in Mykonos is the peak summer months of July and August, which bring locals from the mainland as well as tourists from all over the world, drawn by the clubs, the beaches, and the island’s chic reputation. You will find the island busy during these months—but the beaches in Mykonos are extensive, and there’s room for everybody and every taste.

July and August are also the windiest months of the year, with the Meltemi wind in full force, which cools the island and makes windsurfers and kite-surfers happy. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the cooling breeze; the sun is strong here, and it’s advisable to stay in the shade during the middle of the day.

When Is Shoulder Season?

Shoulder season in Mykonos is May, early June, late September, and October. The season has extended in recent years as more visitors seek a quieter experience on the island.

All of these are excellent months to travel, with low rainfall and long, sunny days. Just be aware that if you’re set on swimming in the sea, the water in May will still be cool; a bracing 65°F (18.5°C).

When Is Low Season?

Winter is the low season in Mykonos, with many businesses closed. Tourism drops during this period, and the island hunkers down against winter showers. There will still be visitors, and the ferries from the mainland keep coming, but this is not beach season.

When is the Best Time to Visit Mykonos?

When is the best time to visit Mykonos? Great question – this guide will help you plan your dream trip.

I won’t beat around the bush – Mykonos is one of the best destinations to visit (pretty much) all year round.

Its charm, gorgeous beaches , and electric nightlife scene makes it a real travel favourite – and it’s not hard to see why.

Although you can technically visit at any time of the year, the best time to visit Mykonos will depend on what you hope to get out of your trip. After all, there are other things to consider, like flight availability, accommodation prices, and peak season.

Overwhelmed? Thought you might be. That’s why I’ve written this handy guide to help you out. Let’s get into it.

The Best Time to Visit Mykonos

The best time to visit mykonos, greece: high season vs. low season, high season (june – august).

Mykonos Town

The high season in Mykonos is crazy… To put it lightly. It’s one of the busiest destinations in Europe during the summer months.

The island sees non-stop action, with at least 50 commercial and private flights coming in daily. That’s a whole lot of tourists filling up the beaches, restaurants, and attractions.

In addition, its port is a buzz of activity, with yachts, ferries, and cruise ships trying to get one of its 220 coveted spots to dock.

This heavy traffic does have its benefits, however. Summer in Mykonos means the good times never end with a range of parties, festivals, and other fun activities.

Sounds fun, right? Well, it is, but planning a trip to Mykonos in summer does come at a price.

Flight tickets, ferry transfers, and accommodation all come at highly inflated prices, with everyone looking to make the best of the wave of activity.

Low Season (Late October – April)

The low season in Mykonos is a stark contrast to what you’ll find in summer. As the summer crowds start dispersing, this is when you’ll get a feel of what island life here is like.

The real bonus is that you’ll score great deals on accommodation, ferry transfers, flights, and meals at local restaurants. The downfall of the low season is that most ferry operators and airlines offer limited and less frequent services.

Plus, not all attractions are open during these months. From December to February, the island sees quite a bit of rain, but it’s not as cold as other parts of Greece.

Best Time to Travel to Mykonos to…

Mykonos Town

There isn’t really a bad time to travel to Mykonos. It depends on what you’d like to experience during your stay.

The weather is pretty great all year round, and there are many different things to do in Mykonos during each season.

Though, it has to be said that summer is great for experiencing the island when it’s a flurry of activity and opportunities to enjoy endless fun in the azure waters of the Aegean Sea.

Best Time to Visit Mykonos to Party

Paradise Mykonos

Mykonos’ party season lasts the entire summer. And they party HARD. From mid-June to August, you can look forward to loads of festivals and parties, including the famous XLSIOR Festival.

There are huge parties most days, and the beach clubs are the place to party up a storm until the early morning hours. Summer is the best time to experience Mykonos’ renowned nightlife scene.

Enjoy the Island

Mykonos

If being amongst thousands of people is not necessarily your thing, I suggest going during the shoulder seasons.

These take place from September to late October and March through May. The weather is decent, and while there are a few tourists around, you won’t have to squeeze past people while walking down Mykonos’ narrow streets or queue to get into most places.

Find Peace and Quiet

Adel Private Suites Mykonos

Want this gorgeous island all to yourself? I don’t blame you. I can’t recommend visiting in the low season enough. It’s the perfect time to visit if you’d like to save money and experience the natural charm of Mykonos.

Just be aware that the weather is very unpredictable from December to February and gets a bit of rain and heavy wind.

Not the ideal time to lay on the beach or go diving, but still worth visiting to recharge and rejuvenate. Not all restaurants and hotels are open during this time, but there are more than enough for you to choose from and have a good time.

Usually, you can enjoy more personalised service, and it’s a great time to get to know the locals, who are generally more relaxed when the crowds of tourists travel home.

The Best Time of Year to Go to Mykonos: Things to Consider Before Booking your Mykonos Trip

Best time to travel to mykonos.

Mykonos Town

Ok, so what do I think? The best time of year to visit Mykonos would be during the shoulder season. You can enjoy the island and its top attractions without having to fight your way through thousands of other people. This takes place from September to October.

By then, most of the crowds would have left, and the weather remains lovely and warm. Most restaurants and hotels are still open, and you’ll see a significant reduction in the price of accommodation, meals, and flights.

March to May is another fantastic time to visit. This is when the island starts warming up again, and most hotels and restaurants re-open to prepare for the hordes of tourists. Prices do, however, remain reasonable, and there are fewer tourists.

When is the High Season in Mykonos?

Mykonos Town

Unsurprisingly, summer is the peak season in Mykonos. Summer lasts from June till August, with July and August being the busiest months.

The warm weather does, however, make it the perfect time to soak up the sun and enjoy outdoor activities. Plus, the sun sets late during these months, making the days longer for enjoying everything you want to do on your vacation.

The high season of Mykonos comes with certain guarantees. You will find frequent flights and ferry transfers from other islands and the mainland. So getting to Mykonos will not be a problem. There are also many accommodation options to choose from to ensure a comfortable stay.

As the name “High Season” suggests, you can expect to pay sky-high prices for almost everything. While this is a great time to visit, it’s not great for your budget to pay an arm and a leg for everything.

If you are confident that this is the time you want to visit Mykonos, then the best advice I can give you is to book all your transportation, accommodation, and activities in advance, so you don’t get any nasty surprises along the way.

The Cheapest Time to Visit Mykonos

Mykonos Town

Winter and spring are the cheapest times to visit Mykonos. During winter, the island is super quiet, so if you can brave the weather, you’ll find the best deals on everything.

Spring is perhaps the most idyllic time to visit. This is when the weather starts warming up, and everyone on the island starts gearing up for summer’s festivities. Everything on the island remains affordable and reasonably priced.

The later shoulder season is also one of the cheapest times to visit Mykonos. This occurs from September until late October and even early November during autumn.

You should still expect to pay a bit more in September and early October for accommodation and flights, but it won’t cost as much as in the high season.

I recommend booking in late October and early November when the weather is still great and the vast numbers of tourists have entirely dispersed.

Tip: Read my guide to the best hotels in Mykonos and find your dream stay.

Mykonos by Season

Mykonos in spring.

March – May

Like many other destinations, Mykonos is a beautiful place to visit in spring. It’s quiet and calm, allowing you to enjoy the island at a slower pace. The weather is great too. Temperatures average between 18°C ( 65°F) and 22°C (73°F).

Lent and Easter fall within these months, and the island hosts many activities and events during Holy Week.

Mykonos in Summer

June – August

Mykonos Town

Let’s not beat around the bush. Mykonos in summer is extremely hot. Temperatures average between 23°C (74°F) and 30°C (86°F), and often higher. So please, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen, bathing suit , or swimming trunks .

Mykonos in Autumn

September – October

Autumn brings about cooler temperatures, usually never reaching more than 25°C (77°C). It’s still an ideal time to go to the beach or enjoy a sunset cruise in the evening.

The island is quieter, and offers calm seas and a more laid back atmosphere.

Mykonos in Winter

November- February

Winter in Mykonos is highly unpredictable. Sometimes it is warm, while you can expect strong winds with heavy rainfall on other days.

Unlike the mainland, though, it doesn’t receive any snow. Temperatures average around 16°C (60°F), with December, January, and February receiving the most rainfall.

When to Travel to Mykonos: Practical Tips + Tricks

When should i avoid mykonos.

I recommend avoiding Mykonos during the high season, if you can. The island is full to the brim, and you’ll pay more for most things.

What is the Cheapest Month to Go to Mykonos?

September, October, March, April, and May are the cheapest months to go to Mykonos. They also happen to be my favourite times to visit.

Mykonos: The Lively Party Spot of Cycladic Islands

Posted by Amazing Traveler | Sep 10, 2024 | Europe | 0 |

For party lovers and fun seekers and LGBT community, Mykonos is perhaps one of the hottest destinations for a holiday. Many people regard it as the hottest party spot of Cycladic islands. It is definitely Greece’s counterpart to Ibiza . You will come across tanned bodies that throng the beaches of Mykonos Island in the Cyclades . You will also come across bass lines that are pounding away in the super clubs here. The excitement lingers all through the night, right until dawn.

Visitors to this place will realise that there is more to Mykonos than just the dazzling sand on its beaches and its insatiable revellers. Those who have spent time on this island before have already discovered that the charm of its capital town, Hora, has given many a traveller the excitement of going through back country paths and taking part in dining and partying scenes that can rival the exciting spots in France or Spain.

Mykonos: The Lively Party Spot of Cycladic Islands

Some of the most popular disc jockeys in the world have informed media channels like the BBC that the Spanish island of Ibiza has become rather expensive for them and that it concentrates more on pleasing the VIPs. Most of the disc jockeys have been candid about how they have preferred partying in Mykonos. Celebrities like Sharon Stone, Stefano Gabbana and Mel Gibson have docked their private yachts in the harbours of this island during the past few months. This island has always been a popular haunt of big time celebrities such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot. Celebrities also approach this island through yachts, helicopters and in their private jets.

Partying on the beaches of Mykonos

The beach life in Mykonos offers plenty of variety to each visitor. You may be seeking a secluded or a tiny cove that gets lapped at by azure waters or you may be after a vast expanse of white sandy tracts to take in the sun. Mykonos offers a beach retreat to suit the needs of all individuals. This island has twenty five beaches and there is no arguing that its beaches are its biggest attraction for party seekers. The party goers do not have to look any further than `Super Paradise’.

Mykonos: The Lively Party Spot of Cycladic Islands

It is dominated by exotic clubs. Psarou and Paraga are other popular haunts for people who want to hold their parties on beaches. Elia offers the longest stretch of white sand in Mykonos and we recommend that you make Villa Elia as your base for staying on this island since it is one of the most beautiful Mykonos villas. This property is very popular with families. Platys Gialos is also popular for people seeking water sports activities. To the south west, Ornos is bustling with plenty of water front restaurants. Agios Ioannis is an ideal place for windsurfers.

Mykonos does not sleep

People who visit Mykonos do away with sleep as they are too engrossed partying whole night long. There are clubs in Hora that keep people engrossed with their late night parties and many of such clubs are LGBT-friendly venues. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender groups would love to party in these clubs. Super clubs like Super Paradise and Cavo Paradiso attract international disc jockeying talent throughout the year.

Mykonos: The Lively Party Spot of Cycladic Islands

Beach parties start around late afternoon and you can expect the excitement to go on until dawn. Regular shuttle services ferry the visitors between beaches of Hora and Super Paradise. People who want sedate nocturnal parties can try out various bars in Hora and sample champagne cocktails at Aigli, Galleraki or Queen of Mykonos. People interested in cabarets or live music can visit the Skandinavian Bar or the Piano Bar.

Plenty of excitement for water sports enthusiasts

For avid divers, there is plenty happening in Mykonos. There are caves and wrecks to attract beginners in diving and experienced divers. Diving operators would mostly be found in Lia and Kalafatis beaches. Some examples are GoDive Mykonos and Mykonos Diving Centre. You can also take windsurfing lessons at the Windsurf Centre Mykonos on the Kalafatis Beach. You may also try out activities such as wakeboarding, fly-boarding or wake-skating. You may approach Platys Gialos Water Sports. The prime spot in Mykonos for watching a sunset is Little Venice and Kato Mili where you will come across four windmills on a hill that overlooks the waterfront.

Mykonos: The Lively Party Spot of Cycladic Islands

Where should you stay?

Make your base at Villa Elia. This is an exotic beach front boutique property. It has all the makings of an up-market property on a Greek island. It has a typically elegant Cycladic architecture going for it with its curves, its interiors, its infinity pool, ceilings and terraces which absorb the breeze from the Aegean Sea. You can have access throughout the year with the help of ferries which connect Mykonos with the ports of Piraeus and Rafina in Athens. These ferries also connect the neighbouring islands of Andros and Tinos. Catamarans also link other islands in the Cyclades with Mykonos that include Paros and Santorini. There are connections available from Mykonos ferry to islands of Rhodes and Crete.

Mykonos is the great glamour island of Greece and flaunts its sizzling St-Tropez-meets-Ibiza style and party-hard reputation. The high-season mix of hedonistic holidaymakers, cruise-ship crowds, buff gay men and posturing fashionistas throngs Mykonos Town (aka Hora), a gorgeous whitewashed Cycladic maze, delighting in its cubist charms and its chichi cafe-bar-boutique scene.
