The Best Time to Visit the Seychelles Islands

best time to visit seychelles

Located approximately 930 miles off the eastern coast of Africa in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are a slice of heaven right here on Earth. They are beautiful year-round but the best time to visit is in spring or fall when the islands are less crowded and the weather is nearly perfect. The archipelago is made up of 115 tiny islands that are well known for their soft, white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and unique wildlife. It is a wonderful destination for travelers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life for a while, providing a serene refuge to be as active or relaxed as they choose.

Some of the top activities include snorkeling and scuba diving , spotting wild giant tortoises, and hiking on tropical trails through lush jungles. Of course, you can also choose to soak up the sun on the beach and enjoy the local food and culture too. Make no mistake, the Seychelles are unlike any other place on the planet, deftly melding a laid-back island vibe with a distinct African influence.

Of course, if you're planning your own visit to this idyllic setting, the first question you probably have is when is the best time to go. As with most island destinations, there isn't really a bad time to visit the Seychelles but there are certainly some months that are better than others.

Weather in the Seychelles

Situated just south of the equator, the Seychelles have fairly stable and predictable weather all year round. There also aren't traditional seasons, with the year split into rainy season and dry season instead. January and February are the wettest months of the year, although showers are common from November through February. During other times of the year, tropical rains are a common occurrence as well, although they don't tend to last long.

The warmest time of the year runs from December to April, although temperatures are fairly steady all year long. In the Seychelles it is unusual for temperatures to drop below 75 degrees Fahrenheit or climb above 90. As a result, it can be warm, but cool ocean breezes make for a pleasant, comfortable experience.

Thanks to their geographical location, the Seychelles generally stay out of the path of the major cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean. It is extremely rare for a major storm to hit the islands, which only reaffirms that it is a destination that is safe and comfortable just about any time of the year.

While weather conditions are favorable just about anytime, the so-called shoulder seasons are quite possibly the best overall time to visit the Seychelles. During the months of April and May the warmer, more humid weather has just passed, while in October and November it has yet to arrive. The result is extremely comfortable conditions that are optimal for exploring the islands.

Those months tend to be fairly quiet in terms of visitors as well, which makes the beaches, restaurants, and other attractions less crowded. It can also make it much easier to book a hotel room, tour, or active excursion, with the possibility to potentially save some cash along the way.

High Season in the Seychelles

Those looking to avoid the crowds may want to stay away from the Seychelles during the months of July, August, December, and January. That is the high tourist seasons, with thousands flocking to the islands to soak up the sun. Some of the smaller, more remote islands that make up the Seychelles are still relatively uncrowded, but expect the more popular areas to be extremely busy throughout those times of the year.

When to Scuba Dive in the Seychelles

As mentioned, the Seychelles are a great destination for scuba divers and are well known for the incredible azure seas, abundant corals, and fascinating sea life that sits just off shore. Fortunately, the scuba diving there is also excellent all year round with virtually no impact from the sifting trade winds or changes in levels of temperature or precipitation.

That said however, the clearest ocean waters are actually found during the shoulder seasons as well, further cementing those months as the best time to go. During April, May, October, and November, the visibility in the water is so clear that divers can see down to as far as 100 feet. There aren't many places on the planet that can claim that kind of clarity. This helps to make the Seychelles one of the best destinations in the world for divers — and even snorkelers — looking to spend a bit of time in the water.

Divers looking to swim with whale sharks will find that the best time for that activity is between September and November. If that's high on your list of "must-do" activities, be sure to plan accordingly.

How the Trade Winds Impact the Weather

The trade winds that blow across the Indian Ocean have a direct impact on the conditions in the Seychelles. From November through March those winds blow from the northwest, bringing warmer temperatures and more humidity with them. Meanwhile, from May to October the winds shift to the southeast, bringing cooler temperatures throughout that period.

Those southerly trade winds have another impact on the island that travelers should keep in mind as well. The stronger breezes during that time of the year often results in large amounts of seaweed being deposited along some of the beaches. So much so, that some of the more popular tourist spots could find themselves closed from time to time. It usually isn't all that difficult to find an alternative beach to spend some time in the sun, but it is important to be aware that this is a possibility before going.

Rainy Season in the Seychelles

From November to February, the rainy season brings frequent tropical storms and higher levels of humidity. Those storms typically arrive in the form of afternoon thunderstorms that can put a damper on outdoor activities. Temperatures also tend to be a little warmer at this time of year as well, although there isn't a lot of variance from month to month.

Events to Check Out:

  • Attend the Seychelles Ocean Festival: Held annually in December, this underwater festival celebrates the importance of the world's oceans.
  • Run the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon in February.
  • Take part in the Seychelles National Fishing Tournament to raise funds for charity in April.
  • Enjoy the Carnival of Victoria to celebrate multiculturalism, diversity, and history on the islands.
  • Turtle hatchlings begin their march to the sea in January and it lasts until March.

Dry Season in the Seychelles

When the trade winds blow in from June through September, the Seychelles experience their driest and coolest time of the year. During those months, tropical storms can still take place, but they tend to be less intense and shift into the overnight hours, making the days less humid and more pleasant all around. This is a great time of year to go hiking, windsurfing or to whip out the binoculars and go birding.

  • Held in August of each year, the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival helps draw attention to these aquatic creatures which call the islands home.
  • Visit the Cultural Bazar at any time of the year to immerse yourself in local culture and learn about island life from those who live in the Seychelles themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Seychelles Islands are beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during the off-season, in the spring or fall, when the islands are less crowded and the weather is perfect.

If you are planning on visiting two to three islands, plan on spending at least one week in the Seychelles.

The Seychelles are generally safe, however, there have been instances of non-violent burglaries and petty theft, as well as car break-ins and tourist robberies at night. If you use your travel smarts, you will be safe.

Best Times To Visit Seychelles

The best times to visit Seychelles are April, May, October and November. These months represent the transition times between the hot and humid northwest trade winds (from November through March) and the cooler southeast trade winds that define April through October. A visit during these shoulder months offers more mild conditions ideal for sunbathing, wildlife watching and scuba diving. No matter when you visit, you'll encounter temperatures averaging in the 80s. But by frequenting the islands in the spring and fall, you'll also avoid the heavy tourist crowds that descend on the islands in December, January, July and August.

Best time to visit Seychelles

The best time to visit the Seychelles is from April to May and from October to November, as these months are typically drier and less windy than other times of the year. The Seychelles enjoys a tropical climate, characterised by year-round high temperatures, a distinct rainy season, and a dry season. Trade winds also affect the islands between November and March and between December and April so December to April tends to be hotter but also wetter than the rest of the year. During the Seychelles' winter (June to August), temperatures rarely drop below the mid-20s Celsius. In the summer (December to February), temperatures can rise above 30 degrees Celsius. This warmer weather coincides with the wet season, where showers can be heavy but are usually short-lived. If it’s raining on one side of an island, it may be clear on the other. Due to the Seychelles' location in the open ocean, far from any large landmasses, predicting the weather can be challenging, especially in the long term, so online forecasts should be taken with caution. Here’s our month-by-month guide to the Seychelles' weather and climate.

Seychelles Weather

Apr - may, oct - nov, seychelles weather by month.

The Seychelles in January January is the height of summer when the temperatures, humidity and rainfall are at their highest. Despite this, December and January in the Seychelles are a popular time to travel due the holiday season. If you’d rather avoid the rain, it might be worth considering a trip to the Maldives instead as it’s one of the country’s driest months.

The Seychelles in February The rainy season continues into February but there is less precipitation than in January or December. February marks the middle of the Hawksbill turtle hatchling season which usually runs from January to March. Seeing hundreds of tiny hatchlings make their way to the water from their nests is an amazing spectacle but some beaches may be off limits to give them the best chance to survive.

The Seychelles in March We recommend visiting the Seychelles in March, particularly later in the month, as the northwest monsoon ends. This means that there’s less rain but the temperatures will still be high. Any rain tends to come in short sharp bursts and clears quickly.

The Seychelles in April With hardly any breeze, the temperatures rise in April – it’s one of the hottest times of the year. April also the driest and therefore one of the best months to visit the Seychelles. If you like diving or snorkelling, head to the Seychelles in April to make the most of the perfect underwater visibility. The higher temperatures may mean that your time is best spent in the shade of a palm tree or taking a dip in the Indian Ocean rather than hiking through the pristine forests.

The Seychelles in May With the return of the winds, this time from the southeast, humidity drops in May but the temperatures in the Seychelles remain in the high 20s or low 30s. It’s another great month for snorkelling or diving with warm waters and great visibility. There are still rain showers but these tend to pass quickly.

The Seychelles in June The temperatures drop slightly throughout the Seychelles in June, but they’re still up there in the mid-20s. The wind picks up during the month and you’ll start to see surfers and windsurfers out on the water.

The Seychelles in July July is another dry month but again the winds will have increased. Beaches on the islands’ north and west coasts will be relatively sheltered from the wind. Due to summer school holidays and monsoon season in some of our other favourite destinations like the Maldives and Thailand, this is a very popular time to visit the Seychelles. You should book well in advance of your trip.

The Seychelles in August August is another popular month in the Seychelles because of the European school holidays. It is usually quite dry, however, one of the windiest times of the year and the conditions on the south and east coasts of the islands may not be suitable for swimming. There could also be more seaweed washed up on the sand at this time.

The Seychelles in September The winds die down in September, but there’ll still be a cooling breeze coming from the south east. The temperature in the Seychelles is an average high of 27 degrees. As September marks the end of the school summer holidays in Europe, this is a great time to get a good deal but make the most of the drier and calmer weather.

The Seychelles in October If you like snorkelling and diving, October is the best time to visit the Seychelles. The underwater visibility is at its best this month as there’s a window of time between the south east and north west trade winds.

The Seychelles in November. The wind changes direction from the southeast to the northwest in November and rainfall amounts increase in November. The sea will still be relatively calm and the visibility for snorkelling and diving remains good.

The Seychelles in December The northwest trade winds that arrived in November bring the rain in December – there’s a reason why the islands are so lush and green. Although this is not the best time to visit weather-wise, it is a popular time of year to travel, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.

Best time to Travel & Climate in Seychelles

Written by editor on 2nd february 2024, best time to travel & climate in seychelles.

So a question that many people want to know before booking their trip to Seychelles is when is the best time to visit Seychelles? Well, the answer really all depends on your interest, location, and reason why you are travelling to Seychelles. The climate of Seychelles is also a concern that many people have when it comes to planning their trip to the island. This guide aims to provide a broad overview of the country’s climate.

The weather in the islands of Seychelles is very different from that in the rest of Africa. This is why we rely on our experience and records to provide you with the best possible weather patterns.

Air Seychelles

Located in the western Indian Ocean, the islands of Seychelles have a tropical climate characterized by warm and humid conditions. The temperature in the islands ranges from 24-28°C/ 28-32°C generally throughout the year .

The inner islands of the archipelago have dramatic terrain and are characterized by tall hills rising up to 900m. The trade winds that influence the climate in the islands also contribute to the development of the seasons .

The southeast trade winds (Southeast Monsoon) , which peak in July/August, bring with it a relatively dry period. During this time, temperatures in the islands are around 24-28°C with some hotter days in between. The winds can vary from around 19 to 37 km per hour during this period. During this time the seas can be a little bit choppy. So better to fly than take the ferry for island hopping during this season. This is the most ideal time for hiking as the temperature is at its coolest and it is less likely to rain. This is also a great time for Sailing and Kitesurfing or any activities one enjoys with the awesome waves we get this time of the year!

From around mid-September to November (pre-Northwest Monsoon) , the winds start to change, bringing light, warmer winds, and the start of the main rainy season. A great time as the clear and still waters make it a good time for snorkelling and diving . a Beautiful time of the year for fishing and other watersports activities. Sky-diving in Seychlelles is also available this time of the year.

From December to March north-west trade winds (Northwest Monsoon), the temperature is 28-32°C . Seychelles gets exceptionally wet, especially in December and January, though the vegetation is lush, the winds generally light, varying from 15 to 22 km per hour, and the sun at its warmest. This is also the cyclone season, but Seychelles island is not within the cyclone belt. The cyclone belt is by Mauritius and Madagascar

best time to visit seychelles

Cyclone Belt runs through Mauritius and Madagascar to Mozambique.

The calmest months of the year are around the end of March, April till mid-May (Pre-Southeast Monsoon) , which is the month when the winds start to change direction. This is the perfect time for snorkelling and diving as the sea is calm with breathtaking crystal-clear waters. Great time to go fishing and other watersports activities but be sure to protect yourself from the Sun. This time of the year there are also Sky-Diving experiences available in Seychelles.

Seasonal Seaweed

The tropical trade winds not only define the seasons in Seychelles, but they also determine where the seaweed drifts. Although naturally occurring and harmless, beached marine algae can detract from otherwise picture-perfect coastal scenes, and make swimming a little less pleasant, so its seasonal location may affect the area in which you’d prefer to stay.

Generally speaking, from May to September, the cooler, drier, southeast trade winds bring lively seas to southwest Mahé and result in seaweed being washed up onto the beaches of Praslin’s south coast.

Conversely, from October to April, the calm, warm, northwest trade winds litter Praslin’s Côte d’Or beaches with seaweed, and waves and currents are strong on Mahé’s northwest coast, such as at Beau Vallon. The presence of seaweed is more likely on Praslin’s lengthy coastal stretches than in the coves of Mahé and La Digue.

As weather patterns become less predictable, it is worth remembering that distances on these islands are short, so should the wind result in seaweed being on your closest beach, it’s never very far to nearby beaches without seaweed .

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit the Seychelles is between April and May, or October and November, as these are the calmer periods between the two trade winds which hit the island each year. The northwest trade wind blows from November to March and the southeast wind from May to September. These winds cause seaweed to build up on some beaches, so it’s important to consider when choosing your hotel locations at different times of the year.

The temperature in the Seychelles is around 30°C (86°F) all year round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers, and sea breezes which disperse the humidity. However, the Seychelles’ positioning, just seven degrees south of the Equator and away from large land masses in the Indian Ocean, makes it very hard to predict the weather or rely on online forecasts.

The Busiest and Least Crowded Months

The busiest month for tourism in the Seychelles is May, followed by January and February. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit the Seychelles in December. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Estimated Tourism by Month

Most popular months to visit, overall the seychelles travel experience by season, fall (march through may).

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel warm. Highs range from 88.6°F (31.4°C) and 86.1°F (30.1°C) with similar temperatures in the later months. Rain is somewhat common with 4 to 5 days of significant precipitation per month. Fall is the second busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Winter (June through August)

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are comfortable. These months see the least precipitation with about 3 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the slowest season for tourism in the Seychelles, so lodging and other accommodations may cost less than usual.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Seychelles?: At A Glance

Grande Soeur Seychelles

Look, any destination that sits as comfortably close to the equator as Seychelles is going to feel the full wrath of mother nature. Luckily for you though, the Seychelles is pretty decent (understatement of the year) at any time of the year.

Now before you go ahead and throw all caution to the wind, there are some important tidbits to keep in mind. First of all, thanks to splitting itself between two trade winds, not all months in Seychelles are totally equal.

From the end of November through to March, the Northwest Trade Wind brings the wet season. On the other hand, the Southeast Trade Wind turns the seas into a rough and tumble from May to September.

Considering the trade winds dictate much of what impacts your weather outlook for a Seychelles trip, you want to stay on their good side.

The Best Time to Visit Seychelles

What is the best month to travel to seychelles .

Remire Seychelles

If you ask me, the best time to travel to Seychelles is either from April to early May or October and early November. This is when I like to plan my own trips to the archipelago.

Which of these delivers the best time on the islands depends entirely on what you want out of your adventure.

Though, let me caveat this by saying I’ve been to the islands during January and July, months some would consider not that great, and the weather wasn’t terrible. But the shoulder seasons are your go-to for the best tropical trip possible.

When’s High Season in Seychelles?

Grand Anse

Undoubtedly the busiest months to visit Seychelles are December and February. This sits right in the middle of summer on the islands, and travel-wise, it’s the peak of the high season, which usually lasts till March.

As well as this, July and August are also busy months in the Seychelles. Summer is the best time to go to Seychelles for most holidaymakers, prices for almost everything skyrocket during this time of year.

You can expect travel costs, such as your flight tickets, to rise by a staggering 80%. This price hike also extends to accommodation, so decide where to stay in Seychelles early and book as far in advance as possible.

Although the potential knock to your budget might sound off putting, there’s nothing like experiencing the buzz of a Seychellois summer. It’s the holiday season for a reason, and the idyllic weather blends together to stir up some of that island magic I mentioned earlier.

So if you’re looking for the perfect winter sun destination to escape the cold, heading for Seychelles in the high season couldn’t be more of a great idea.

The Cheapest Time to Visit Seychelles

Little Ben Victoria Mahe Seychelles

The cheapest months to visit the Seychelles are May and September. Ideal really, as these are the among the best couple of months to visit.

Yes, the rain tends to be more promiscuous during these months, but showers rarely last longer than a few hours. And the reward for sitting through the downpour is hours of sunshine. So you can still enjoy beach life and island vibes without paying an arm and a leg.

The most significant savings during the low season revolve around flights to Seychelles. Just as much as prices rise during the high season, when the low season comes around, they drop by just as much.

For Epic Water Sports

Grand Anse Beach Mahe Seychelles

Look, not everyone is a pro windsurfer or a perfectly balanced kayaker, but if you’re even the tiniest bit of a water sports lover, head to Seychelles in June.

Not only do you get comfortable weather conditions, but the winds also pick up just enough to attempt (and enjoy) activities like kayaking, sailing, and of course, surfing.

To See the Seychelles Island Resorts

best time to visit seychelles

You can’t plan an adventure to the Seychelles and not include some time lounging underneath a stunning palm tree or diving into pristine waters.

And you may be wondering when is the best time to do this? The answer is April. Why? There’s no better time with almost no wind and very little rainfall.

For the Best Hiking

Sauzier Waterfall

Outdoor lovers, if you want to go trekking while in the Seychelles, you’ll have to plan your trip for June.

The climate just does something unique with low humidity levels and cool breezes during this time. It is the ideal condition to trek through stunning places like Morne Seychellois National Park or hike to the Morne Blanc Viewpoint.

To See the Best Beaches

Anse Royale

Autumn is a no-brainer if you’re stuck with the question of when to travel to Seychelles for its mesmerising beaches.

From September to November, temperatures drop from average highs, and tourist numbers dwindle. This makes having iconic beaches like Beau Vallon Bay and Anse Source d’Argent to yourself that much easier.

Seychelles by Season

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles

Unlike many other spots around the world, the Seychelles has just two main seasons: Rainy and cool. Let’s explore them.

Rainy Season in the Seychelles

October – April

Eden Viewpoint Mahe Seychelles

Many people worry about visiting the Seychelles during the rainy season (particularly in January), but I’m here to tell you that there’s really no need to be apprehensive.

Sure, you might face a shower or two throughout the day, but the heat means that it clears up quickly and you can get back to sunbathing again.

Key Events and Things to Do in the Seychelles in Rainy Season

  • If you’re in Seychelles in December, you can’t skip (or miss) the Seychelles Ocean Festival , formerly the SUBIOS Underwater Festival. This promotes and celebrates marine heritage with exhibits, gala dinners, and film screenings.
  • One of the major events during February is the annual Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon. If you’re not up for much running, head out exploring attractions such as Vallée de Mai.
  • Amongst getting blissfully lost in nature, Semaine de la Francophonie, a week-long celebration of French culture, takes over the largest island of Mahé in March.

Pros to Travelling to Seychelles in the Rainy Season

  • At the very start of the rainy season, you’ll have the perfect conditions for scuba diving and snorkelling as the calm waters of October make it a must-do addition to any things to do in Seychelles list.
  • Seychelles in winter is the ideal escape from the cold weather normally associated with the chilly season.

Cons to Travelling to Seychelles in the Rainy Season

  • Considering the impending trade winds change that follows October, weather can be unpredictable.
  • January is the peak of the rainy season in Seychelles, with monsoons in full swing, so expect at least one heavy shower a day.

Cool/Dry Season in the Seychelles

May – September

Seychelles

So, you fancy visiting the Seychelles in the dry season? An excellent choice, I must say. Especially if you time it so that you’re there in May or the end of September.

During this season, winds blow from the south-east, and are a hell of a lot stronger than the ones that bluster throughout the rainy season. Temperatures also drop (though it’s still warm and sunny, don’t you worry!) which makes it a great time to hike without sweating too much.

Key Events and Things to Do in the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • It can be quite windy at this time, so it’s an ideal spot for water sports like kayaking and sailing.
  • There are quite a few celebrations in the Seychelles during the cool season, including the national holiday of the Seychelles on June 18th, the Festival of Classical Music, and a sailing regatta that is usually held in August.
  • The Praslin Culinary & Arts Fiesta is a huge celebration that happens mid September every year. Expect it to be extremely busy on the island.

Pros to Travelling to the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • The weather is the most significant advantage of the cool season as you get the hot weather, perfect for exploring, but without the rain.
  • May and September are some of the cheapest times to visit the Seychelles.

Cons to Travelling to the Seychelles in Cool Season

  • Dry periods (and sometimes droughts) in the Seychelles are now pretty common – the dry season is beginning to last longer.
  • Some months (June-August) can be extremely windy.

' src=

One of my favorite destinations of all time is Seychelles where I enjoyed a solo 15-day trip. At the time I planned the trip, I had no idea what the best time to visit Seychelles is and just planned a trip near my birthday.

What’s more, I was getting an amazing offer on a flight from Mumbai to Seychelles so without a second thought, I booked it. Luckily for me, I ended up here during good weather so I could enjoy my time on the islands here.

If you are planning a trip to Seychelles, then make sure you check the weather and climate in Seychelles and then plan it. In this article, I have shared information on the best time to visit Seychelles, what you can expect in different months here, and how to travel around the islands during your trip.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles

Due to the trade winds that Seychelles experiences, the best time to visit Seychelles are between the months of April to May, and October to November. These are the transition months between these two trade winds and the weather is slightly mild and pleasant in Seychelles at the time.

In April and October, the weather in Seychelles is slightly calm and warm with negligible rainfall which makes it the perfect time for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The water temperature will be pleasant and you will be able to enjoy 30 meters plus visibility.

You can also enjoy other activities during these months such as sunbathing, bird-watching, swimming, and so on. So, if you are interested in water activities then these months are the best time to visit Seychelles.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind tropical showers, then you can plan a visit here during the months of December, January, July, and August. During the spring and fall season, it is offseason in Seychelles so you won’t have to encounter the large hordes of tourists.

So, if you wish to enjoy some quiet time on the beaches and find the cheapest accommodation deals then spring and fall is the best time to visit Seychelles.

Month-by-Month Weather Guide for Seychelles

Beaches in Seychelles

The average temperature in Seychelles ranges around 30°C throughout the year. So, this island nation experiences hot and humid climate most of the months. However, since Seychelles is situated just 7 degrees south of the Equator and is independently situated in the Indian Ocean, it is difficult to predict the weather here.

You simply cannot rely on the weather forecasts and have to be prepared for all kinds of weather during your trip here. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect and do during different months here:

January – March

This is the beginning of the summer season in Seychelles and the northwest trade winds start blowing around. As a result, one can experience a hot and humid climate here with high rainfall till February. You will still find a lot of tourists here during these months due to several festivals and events being conducted here including the Seychelles Marathon.

In March, you can see the northwest monsoon coming to an end but the temperature is still quite high around here. One of the best things to witness here during these months is the turtle hatchlings making their way from their nest to the ocean.

If you are interested in witnessing a sailing competition then plan a visit to Seychelles in January when the Seychelles Sailing Cup event is held here. During this time, you have a few activities open in Seychelles such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling, and even diving starts from the month of March.

You will find the hotel and flight prices inflated during these months so book everything in advance to get the best packages and pricing.

April – May

As the humid northwest winds start blowing away from Seychelles and the southeast winds start making their way, the weather in Seychelles becomes slightly warm and mild. The temperature in Seychelles range between 27 – 29 degrees Celsius with a little breeze and rainfall.

April is the warmest month in Seychelles and the weather can be slightly hot and humid during these months. However, it is a good time to visit and you can also attend events such as Seychelles National Fishing Tournament and Carnaval International de Victoria here in April.

In April and May, you can also indulge in a lot of activities in Seychelles such as Bird-watching, diving, fishing, diving, hiking, sailing, snorkeling, surfing, and so on. During these months, you will also find the islands slightly deserted and cheaper hotel and flight rates. So, if you wish to plan a budget trip to Seychelles then this is definitely a good time to visit.

June – September

These are the months when the weather in Seychelles becomes a little cooler with less humidity and rainfall. So, this is the peak season to visit Seychelles to enjoy the cool, dry weather here and spend time on the beach. The temperature at the time usually ranges between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius and watching sunsets during these months is quite rewarding.

There are several events to attend during these months as well. You can plan a trip to attend the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival and South East Monsoon Sailfish Tournament in August or the Seychelles Round Table Regatta in September.

If you enjoy adventurous activities such as surfing, hiking, diving, etc. then this is the best time to visit Seychelles. This is a popular time to visit Seychelles, especially the months of July and August so make sure you make your bookings in advance and be ready to pay high-season prices.

Also, the islands will be crowded with tourists but you will still be able to manage a few beaches that are beautiful and secluded.

October is undoubtedly the best time to visit Seychelles as you can indulge in many activities such as bird-watching, diving, fishing, sailing, and snorkeling at the time. Since this is the transition month, there are increased chances of rainfall and it is less windy at the time here.

This is also the month when the Hawksbill turtles start laying their eggs and you can also enjoy watching shark whales, migratory birds, etc. during this month. That’s not all, this is also the time when the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , La Digue Offshore Tournament , and Festival Kreol are celebrated here

In the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , they show many films, conduct several talks and competitions to display the extraordinary underwater life of Seychelles. And the Festival Kreol is a week-long celebration where they celebrate the Creole tradition and heritage.

Also, you can save a lot on the hotel and flight costs and will find more options available as it is an offseason to visit Seychelles.

This is the beginning of the northwest winds in Seychelles so the islands might receive occasional showers during this month. If you wish to avoid the wet season, then stay on the east side and be prepared for higher and humid temperature in Seychelles. This is also the month when you can still witness the Hawksbill turtles laying eggs and can enjoy sightings of the shark whales.

In November, you can also enjoy the International Fishing Competition in Seychelles which is definitely something to look forward to. Apart from that, you have several amazing things to do in Seychelles such as diving, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, and so on.

Although the weather in Seychelles in December is a little humid and there are greater chances of rainfall, it still receives tourists from around the world. This is the month when you will find turtles laying eggs on the beaches in Seychelles and locals celebrating several end-of-the-year festivals. If you want to celebrate New Year with a bang then you can definitely plan a visit to Seychelles in December.

In December, you can indulge in a few activities here as well such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling.

Climate in Seychelles

Sailing in Seychelles

Seychelles is a tropical island that experiences a hot and humid climate throughout the year. However, there are different seasons that can be experienced here and here is everything you need to know about them:

Summer Season

The summer season Seychelles can be experienced between the months of December and March. This is also a heavy tourist season so the prices are high during this time for hotels and activities. However, if you are planning a summer vacation and don’t mind occasional showers then this is definitely the best time to visit Seychelles.

One thing to keep in mind when planning a vacation in Seychelles during this season is that December and January are the busiest months of the season. So, you need to book your accommodations in advance and plan the trip properly. If you are looking for a better month to chill out on the beaches in summer then February is a good time to visit.

Monsoon Season

The monsoon season in Seychelles usually lasts from November to March, December and January being the wettest months in Seychelles. So, if you are interested in dry vacation with plenty of sunbathing on the beach then you can plan a trip between May and July as those are the driest months in Seychelles.

You can still plan a trip to Seychelles in the monsoon season because most of the islands here aren’t in the cyclone belt. So, you don’t have to worry about any storms in this region. However, the weather in Seychelles in December is slightly more humid than the rest of the months due to the frequent showers. The rainfall is not excessive as in Mauritius or Maldives but it could definitely hamper your fun in Seychelles.

Winter Season

Honestly speaking, the best time to visit Seychelles is the winter season as it also happens to be the drier season to enjoy over here. The season lasts from May to October and it is a great time to plan a honeymoon trip here as well due to lower humidity than the rest of the year. The average temperature in Seychelles during this season is around 25 – 29 degrees Celsius in the winters.

July and August are the peak months in Seychelles so you will find a lot of tourists around here then and the prices are generally higher in the winter months. But it is also the best time to enjoy outdoor activities here such as surfing, scuba diving, bird-watching, and so on. If you are interested in exploring the islands and participating in water activities, then the weather in Seychelles in May is absolutely perfect for it.

Weather in Seychelles

Since Seychelles experiences a year-long tropical climate, you can plan a trip here anytime you want. However, different seasons will be suitable for different activities to do and will majorly depend on the month you choose to visit. You will also have to shortlist a few places to visit when in Seychelles according to the weather in Seychelles.

Seychelles’ weather is primarily governed by two trade winds: the hot and humid northwest trade winds and the cool southeast trade winds.

The northwest trade winds blow from October to March and the wind speed averages around 8 – 12 knots at the time. As for the southeast trade winds, they blow in the months of May to September when the wind speed averages around 10 – 20 knots, and the weather is slightly cooler and appropriate for sailing at the time.

These trade winds are also responsible for the seaweed build upon a few beaches, so you need to choose your beachside hotel carefully.

Anse Source D'Argent Beach

There is no particular best time to visit Seychelles as it depends on the places that you would like to visit and the things that you would like to do in Seychelles. However, I planned my trip during the month of May and it was definitely a pleasant time to visit. There were occasional showers but mostly the weather was clear and sunny during this time.

So, I could enjoy my time on the beaches here and could easily hike around the islands as well. Be sure to plan your trip well in advance if you wish to make the most of your trip here as well.

Rain in the Seychellen

When is the rainy season in the seychelles.

Most Seychelles holidaymakers ask when the rainy season is. In general, the Seychelles sees short rain showers almost every day, usually during the night, and this contributes to the beautiful greenery of the islands. There is the most rainfall in the months of December to February, with December and January seeing 9 - 10 rainy days and around 300 mm of precipitation, making them the rainiest months. The Seychelles are located outside of cyclone ranges, so you shouldn’t expect any storms.

What can you do when it rains in the Seychelles?

The evergreen nature of the Seychelles is not an accident! There are showers almost every day, but they tend to be short. If it rains for a longer time, which can happen in December and January, it is worth visiting the various art galleries on the island! The large hotels and resorts also offer cooking courses where you can prepare delicious Creole cuisine. Finally, swimming in the ocean as it is raining is actually a wonderful experience as the ocean water tends to be much warmer than the rain!

FAQs about the Seychelles Climate

When is there seaweed in the seychelles.

The south-east trade winds between May and the start of October bring with them lots of seaweed to the island of Praslin. This of course affects the pristine surface of the beaches, but is actually a good thing as it shows that the underwater world around the Seychelles is in really good condition. In the picture here you can see the beaches on Praslin where you will find seaweed during this time. If you want to avoid that, you can visit the beaches on the other side of the island, which are generally free from seaweed. An exception here would be Anse Volbert (Cote d’Or) in the north of Praslin. Between December and February, the north-west trade winds bring some seaweed to these shores.

The following beaches are affected by seaweed from May to October on Praslin:

What is the water temperature in the Seychelles?

The water temperatures in the Seychelles range from 23 - 28°C throughout the year. The coldest temperatures are between July and September, while October - June sees consistent temperatures from 25 - 28°C.

How strong is the sunlight in the Seychelles?

Due to its proximity to the equator, the sun is very strong in the Seychelles. Strong sun protection (factor 30 - 50) is recommended at all times, and a sun hat should always be in your luggage.

When does the sun rise and set in the Seychelles?

Sunrise and sunset in the Seychelles doesn’t vary much throughout the year, only by around 30 minutes in total. In January, the sun rises at around 6:15 and sets at 18:40, while in June these times change to 6:30 and 18:15 respectively. Spectacular sunset views throughout the year are a real highlight of any Seychelles holiday!

When is the cheapest time to travel to the Seychelles?

We are often asked when it is cheapest to travel to the Seychelles. Due to their equatorial location, the climate doesn’t vary much throughout the year, so there is also not much in terms of price changes from accommodations, and there is no classic peak season or off season. In general, holidays outside of European holiday times are cheaper. We also recommend that you don’t wait too long to book, as accommodations become fully booked so you might miss out!

Best time to visit Seychelles: Climate

The climate of the Seychelles is determined by the winds:

  • Northwest Winds:  November – April
  • Southeast Winds:  May – October

The climate in Seychelles is tropical. It is warm through the year, between 75°F – 86°F. There is high humidity, but thanks to the fresh sea breeze the impact of the heat reduces, making the climate largely pleasant. The Indian Ocean attracts year-round temperatures of 78°F.

Two opposing trade winds generally govern the weather pattern: the north-westerly trades blow from October to March when wind speeds average from 8 to 12 knots; and the brisker south-easterly trades blow from May to September with winds of between 10 to 20 knots, bringing the cooler and windier conditions ideal for sailing.

The periods of calm between the trades produce fairly warm and wind-free conditions throughout April and also in October. Conditions for swimming, snorkeling and especially diving are superb during April/May and October/November when the water temperature sometimes reaches 85ºF and visibility is often more than 30 meters.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles: When To Plan Your Dream Vacay

beautiful beach in Seychelles-Leisure

Seychelles, with its turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and abundant exotic flora and fauna, it's no wonder that it's become a dream destination for travelers worldwide. However, with so much natural beauty, planning the perfect trip to Seychelles can be overwhelming, especially when choosing the right time to visit.

The best time to visit Seychelles depends on various factors, including the weather, festivals, and events. Seychelles has a tropical climate and experiences two distinct seasons: dry and wet. The dry season is from May to October, while the wet season is from November to April. Each season has unique advantages and disadvantages, which we will explore in more detail in this article. Whether you're a beach lover, an adventure seeker, or a culture enthusiast, Seychelles has something to offer everyone. In this article, we'll provide all the information you need to plan the perfect trip to Seychelles , including the best time to visit, what to expect during each season, and tips for making the most of your trip. So, let's dive in and start exploring this paradise on Earth!

Weather in Seychelle

The weather is one of the most crucial factors to consider when planning a trip to Seychelles. The climate in Seychelles is tropical, with temperatures ranging from 24C to 32C throughout the year. However, the weather patterns in Seychelles are divided into two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

Dry Season (May to October)

The dry season in Seychelles runs from May to October, making it the best time to visit Seychelles. During this time, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies, low humidity, and refreshing breezes. The sea is calm, and the water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The dry season is also an excellent time for hiking, as the trails are not too muddy, and the temperature is comfortable.

Wet Season (November to April)

The wet season in Seychelles runs from November to April, and the weather can be unpredictable during this time. High humidity, occasional rains, and strong winds characterize the wet season. The sea can be rough, making indulging in water sports activities challenging. However, the wet season is an excellent time to visit Seychelles for birdwatching, as many migratory birds visit the islands during this time.

Festivals and Events in Seychelles

carnaval international de victoria in Seychelles-Lesiure

Carnaval International de Victoria

If you're a fan of vibrant colors, live music, and cultural festivities, the Carnaval International de Victoria is a must-attend event in Seychelles. This famous festival is held annually in April and celebrates the diversity of Seychellois culture. The festival features a grand parade with colorful floats, traditional dances, and live music from local and international artists. Visitors can also enjoy street food and drinks and various other activities, such as cultural performances and exhibitions.

Seychelles Ocean Festival

The Seychelles Ocean Festival is a paradise for nature and ocean lovers annually in November. The festival celebrates the marine life and natural beauty of Seychelles, and visitors can participate in various activities such as snorkeling, diving, and beach clean-ups. The festival also features exhibitions, workshops, and talks on marine conservation and sustainable tourism. If you're interested in marine life and want to learn more about the efforts to protect it, then the Seychelles Ocean Festival is the perfect event for you.

Festival Kreol

Creol woman-Leisure

The Festival Kreol is a week-long celebration of Creole culture and traditions held annually in October. The festival is a vibrant and colorful showcase of Seychellois Creole culture, with various activities such as Creole music, dance, food, and art. Visitors can experience traditional Creole dishes, such as grilled fish and spicy curries, and enjoy the sounds of traditional Creole music and dance. The festival also features exhibitions, workshops, and Creole culture and history talks. If you're interested in cultural festivities and want to experience Seychelles' unique and colorful culture, then the Festival Kreol is a must-attend event.

Pros and Cons of Visiting Seychelles During Peak Season

While the dry season is the best time to visit Seychelles, it is also the peak season, which means that the prices are higher and the crowds are more significant. Here are some pros and cons of visiting Seychelles during the peak season:

  • Pleasant weather and calm sea, perfect for water sports activities.
  • Ideal for hiking and outdoor activities.
  • Vibrant atmosphere, with various festivals and events.
  • Perfect time for photography enthusiasts.
  • Higher prices for accommodations, flights, and activities.
  • Crowded beaches, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
  • Difficult to find a secluded spot or have a private experience.
  • Limited availability for accommodations and activities.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles for Budget Travelers

If you're a budget traveler, avoid the peak season and consider visiting Seychelles during the shoulder season. The shoulder season is the period between the peak season and the low season, and it offers a perfect balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. The best time to visit Seychelles for budget travelers is from April to May and October to November.

Seychelles is a beautiful destination that offers something for everyone. Whether you're a beach lover, an adventure seeker, or a culture enthusiast, Seychelles has it all. The best time to visit Seychelles depends on your preferences and interests, but the dry season from May to October is generally the best time to go. However, if you're a budget traveler, consider visiting Seychelles during the shoulder season. Regardless of when you visit Seychelles, it will surely be a memorable experience you'll cherish forever. We hope this comprehensive guide has helped you plan your dream vacation to Seychelles. The Ultimate Seychelles Adventure Guide: Hidden Gems and Insider Tips

The Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, is known for its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and abundance of marine life. The luxury resorts attract honeymooners and high-end travellers, but the Seychelles offer far more than just lavish getaways.

best time to visit seychelles

If you’re seeking an adventure that combines natural beauty, local culture, and exciting outdoor activities, this guide will take you beyond the tourist hotspots. From stunning off-the-beaten-path beaches to sustainable travel practices, here’s how to explore Seychelles in the most immersive and rewarding way.

1. Stunning beaches beyond the tourist hotspots

The Seychelles’ iconic beaches, Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue and Beau Vallon on Mahé may be the most popular, but there are numerous secluded and less-known beaches waiting to be discovered.

Here are just a few of the other beaches in the Seychelles you could explore:

Anse Georgette, Praslin

Anse Georgette is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Anse Lazio, but this stunning gem is every bit as gorgeous. Tucked away on the grounds of the Constance Lemuria Resort, Anse Georgette offers clear turquoise waters and soft white sands – perfect for a peaceful day away from the crowds.

Anse Marron, La Digue

For the true adventurers, Anse Marron is a hidden treasure that requires a guided hike to reach. The challenging trek takes you through granite boulders and jungle paths, but the reward is a pristine beach with pools formed between the rocks and virtually no tourists in sight. A true slice of paradise for those willing to go the extra mile.

Petite Anse, Mahé

Mahé, Seychelles’ largest island, offers its share of secret spots too. Petite Anse, located near Baie Lazare, is a beautiful beach accessible via a short hike from the Four Seasons resort. The beach features calm waters perfect for swimming, and its isolation makes it feel like your private island.

Cruises to Seychelles are a great way to explore more of the beaches the islands are so famous for.

2. Dive into local culture and cuisine

While the beaches are undoubtedly the main attraction, Seychelles is rich in cultural heritage that’s just as fascinating. The Seychellois culture is a vibrant mix of African, French, Indian, and Chinese influences, and this melting pot is best experienced through its people, markets, and food.

Explore Victoria’s Market

Victoria, the capital of Seychelles on Mahé, is home to Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, where you can experience local life firsthand. Vendors sell a variety of fresh fish, tropical fruits, and spices, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of Seychellois. It’s also the perfect place to try local Creole cuisine.

Try traditional Seychellois dishes

Seychellois food is a delightful fusion of Creole, Indian, and Asian flavours – sample dishes include pwason griye (grilled fish), ladob (a sweet dish made from breadfruit or bananas), and rougaille (a spicy tomato-based sauce). Street food stalls across the islands serve up favourites like samoussa (similar to samosas), coconut curries, and fresh fruit juices.

Visit La Digue for island culture

La Digue is one of the most traditional islands, where ox-carts and bicycles are the primary modes of transportation. The island’s laid-back lifestyle is the perfect backdrop to experience Creole culture. Visit a local rum distillery, explore traditional fishing villages, and attend a Sega dance night to immerse yourself in local entertainment.

3. Adventure activities in Seychelles

Seychelles isn’t just about lounging on the beach. If you’re an adventure enthusiast, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.

best time to visit seychelles

Snorkelling and diving

The Seychelles’ crystal-clear waters are teeming with marine life, making it one of the best destinations for snorkelling and diving. Spots like Baie Ternay on Mahé and Coco Island near La Digue offer underwater experiences where you can swim alongside turtles, colourful fish, and vibrant coral reefs. For divers, the Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a chance to encounter sharks, manta rays, and even dugongs.

Hiking in the National Parks

Seychelles’ islands are crisscrossed with trails that lead you through forests, up mountains, and to hidden coves. One of the best hikes is the Morne Blanc Trail on Mahé, which takes you to a stunning viewpoint over the island. The Vallee de Mai on Praslin is another must-visit, a prehistoric forest that’s home to the endemic Coco de Mer palm.

Island hopping

With 115 islands, island hopping is a quintessential Seychelles adventure. Cat Cocos ferries connect Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, offering the most accessible route for inter-island travel. For the more remote outer islands like Bird Island or Denis Island, you can charter boats or small planes. Each island has its unique charm, from Praslin’s lush forests to La Digue’s granite boulder beaches.

4. Budget tips for exploring Seychelles

Although Seychelles is often perceived as a luxury destination, it’s possible to explore the islands on a budget if you plan carefully.

Stay in guesthouses

Instead of five-star resorts, opt for locally-owned guesthouses and self-catering accommodations. Many of these guesthouses offer an authentic Seychellois experience, with hosts who can provide insider tips on the best places to visit.

Use public transport

Rather than renting a car or booking expensive tours, use Seychelles’ efficient bus system, especially on Mahé and Praslin. Buses are cheap and connect most parts of the islands. For inter-island travel, the Cat Cocos ferry is more budget-friendly than flying between islands.

Dine at takeaways

While high-end restaurants abound, you’ll find many affordable and delicious takeaways scattered across the islands. These small food stalls serve up local Creole dishes like curry, grilled fish, and rice at a fraction of the cost of a sit-down meal.

5. Sustainable travel practices in Seychelles

As a delicate island ecosystem, Seychelles is highly conscious of sustainability. Travellers can support the islands’ conservation efforts by adopting responsible travel practices.

best time to visit seychelles

Respect marine life

When snorkelling or diving, avoid touching or stepping on coral reefs, as they are incredibly fragile. Many marine parks, such as St. Anne Marine National Park, require visitors to pay an entry fee, which contributes to conservation efforts. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to prevent harm to marine life.

Support local businesses

Choose locally-owned accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators to ensure your tourism dollars benefit the Seychellois community. Seychelles also has many eco-friendly lodges and guesthouses committed to sustainable tourism.

Participate in conservation projects

Many organisations in Seychelles offer volunteer opportunities for tourists interested in conservation. Projects include turtle monitoring, reef restoration, and bird conservation. Check out the Seychelles Islands Foundation or Nature Seychelles for more information on how to get involved.

Visiting the Seychelles

Seychelles is more than just a luxury honeymoon destination; it’s an adventurer’s paradise with untapped beaches, rich local culture, and thrilling activities for all types of travellers. By exploring the islands’ lesser-known gems, embracing the local lifestyle, and practicing sustainable tourism, you can create a truly unforgettable Seychellois adventure.

10 idyllic Seychelles islands to explore this winter

Dreamy sunset scenes have always attracted honeymooners to the Seychelles , a nation of 115 islands scattered across more than a million square kilometres of Indian Ocean. But the true romance of the destination lies elsewhere.

Undulating, jungle-wrapped mountains create a hiker’s paradise, while healthy coral reefs are an underwater playground for snorkellers and scuba divers. The conservation story is also commendable. Islanders have worked hard to eradicate invasive species, allowing native birds to flourish, and the government has committed to making 30 per cent of its waters a protected marine zone.

Although most big resorts are internationally owned, it’s now much easier to sample the country’s culture. Connected by an efficient ferry service, the inner islands Mahe, Praslin and La Digue offer a taste of local living at prices to fit all budgets.

But – as the Seychellois will tell you – every island has unique appeal and the power to spark a love affair with all types of visitors.

1. La Digue

Best for beach lovers

Days unravel slowly on this tiny island cherished by creatives and bohemians. Local artist George Camille found inspiration for many of his works in the sandy streets and steep forests. Just like the nostalgic paintings hanging in his studio, local Seychellois women still carry bundles of fish from markets and children play in the gardens of plantation-era homes. Connected by ferry to Mahé and Praslin, La Digue is affordable and straightforward to reach. For complete freedom, hire a bike at the jetty and pedal along largely car-free roads to reach some of the archipelago’s best beaches. A backdrop for Bounty and Bacardi adverts, Anse Source d’Argent is the most popular, while Grand Anse and Anse Marron offer more seclusion and space. To access secret spots, join a half-day adventure tour with Sunny Trails ( sunnytrailguide.net ), clambering over rocks, crawling through tunnels and listening to the call of rare paradise flycatchers on forest trails.

Book it: Coral Tree Travel (01242 908 720; coraltreetravel.com ) offers a seven-night half-board family holiday at La Domaine de L’Orangeraie from £2,450 per person (two adults and one child sharing), including flights.

2. Felicite

Best for honeymooners

In a place as beautiful as the Seychelles, it would be criminal to stay indoors. But some residences are so decadent, it’s tempting. Tucked discreetly into the hillside, villas at Six Senses Zil Pasyon come with a twinkling lap pool, an ocean-view sun deck and a playful swing in the glass-fronted bathroom – perfect for honeymooners who want to be left alone. What’s more, with only one resort on the island, there’s never a risk of crowds. Reserve a private cabana on a choice of quiet beaches, dine by candlelight below an ancient takamaka tree or watch sunset with a glass of champagne while nuzzling into beanbags set up at a secret location in the rocks. Other activities include a cinema below the stars or a dawn kayak paddle to nearby protected Cocos Island, where it’s possible to snorkel in solitude. The star attraction is a spa carved into the granite coastline, with five double treatment rooms, an outdoor meditation pavilion and an elevated private pool.

Book it:  Scott Dunn (020 3813 7587;  scottdunn.com ) offers a five-night B&B stay from £10,600 (two sharing), including flights and transfers.

3. Silhouette

Best for hikers  Once a month, elderly hermits Abdullah and Elvi Jumaye trek for two hours through thick, steep-rising jungle to collect supplies. It takes tourists twice as long to complete the archipelago’s toughest hike along a historic trail used by Silhouette Island’s plantation workers, but the rewards of reaching abandoned village Grand Barbe are plentiful. Search below sprawling ferns to find endemic limbless amphibians known as caecilians; discover a population of Aldabra giant tortoises thriving amid the ruins; and stroll along an isolated beach where turtles have nested for thousands of years. An impressive 93 per cent of this emerald island is protected as a national park, with three major trails running through the mountains and along the coast. Guided tours are offered by Hilton Labriz, the only major resort, which stretches along the idyllic golden coastline. Sleep metres from the ocean and take solo strolls along beaches curving into the horizon. A showstopping spa has been sensitively built into the rocks.

Book it:  Kuoni (0800 088 5627;  kuoni.co.uk ) offers a seven-night stay from £2597 per person (two sharing), including flights.

4. Sainte-Anne

Best for families on a budget Although the Seychelles excels in glossy, glitzy resorts, not every holiday requires an A-list bank balance. Rivalling the exclusivity of many other resorts but with a much lower price tag, Club Med’s family-friendly offering is the only property set on the largest island within Sainte-Anne Marine National Park. Only a 15-minute boat ride from Mahé, it’s also within easy reach. All-inclusive packages (an exception in the Seychelles, which is typically half-board) keep costs down. Along with meals and an open bar, various sports activities, kids’ clubs and entertainment are included. Explore the coral-fringed coastline by snorkelling, sailing or taking a trip on a glass-bottomed boat. Guided hikes, Creole cooking lessons and yoga workshops will also keep multiple generations amused. Young babies are welcome, with baby baths, pushchairs, bottle warmers, changing tables and umbrella beds all pre-bookable.

Book it:  Club Med (03453 676767;  clubmed.co.uk ) offers a seven-night all-inclusive stay from £7,312 (two adults and two children), including flights and transfers.

5. Alphonse and Cosmoledo

Best for scuba divers

With so many colourful distractions on land, it’s easy to forget the Indian Ocean’s greatest treasures lie beneath the waves. Some of the best dive sites are located around the outer islands, a remote collection of atolls a 60-minute charter flight from Mahé, where South African company Blue Safari has set up two excellent resorts. On Alphonse, guests can scuba daily with a PADI dive school, watching nurse sharks and predatory giant trevally hunt in groups – an unusual behaviour common in this part of the world. If you’re lucky, it’s possible to race against high-speed sailfish or identify mantas as part of an ongoing conservation project. When the tides are right, take a boat trip to neighbouring Saint-François to search for rare coconut crabs in mangroves and wade through shallow waters used as a nursery by baby lemon sharks. Even more remote, a rustic eco resort on Cosmoledo is a short distance from Unesco-protected Aldabra – an island several thousand giant tortoises call home.

Book it: Reef & Rainforest (01803 866965; reefandrainforest.co.uk ) offers a 12-day trip to the Outstanding Outer Islands of the Seychelles from £10,995 per person (two sharing), excluding flights.

Best for nature enthusiasts

Biblical references abound in the Vallée de Mai’s Garden of Eden, where male and female coco de mer palms take 25 years to spawn the world’s heaviest seed. Weighing up to 30kg and selling for £300 as a souvenir, the precious pod is a knockout sight. “Get hit by one of those and you’ll stay in heaven forever,” jokes naturalist Medina Laboudallon, the daughter of a famous Seychellois conservationist, who leads tours of the Unesco-listed site. More endemic and conservation success stories can be found on neighbouring Aride Island, managed by the Island Conservation Society, an NGO. Arrive by motorboat, surfing high waves to reach the beach, and spend a morning learning about the projects to rewild and protect native birds. Walk within metres of curious magpie robins, one of the world’s rarest species, and peek at white-tailed tropic bird chicks sheltering in tree stumps. Owned by a family of early French settlers, Praslin’s elegantly attired, beachfront property L’Archipel can arrange tours.

Book it: Abercrombie & Kent (01242 547 760; abercrombiekent.co.uk ) offers a seven-night B&B stay from £3,499 per person (two sharing), including flights.

Best for eco-conscious travellers Of all the desert islands to be stranded on, this private eco-resort a 30-minute flight north of Mahe would be number one choice. On a mission to be self-sufficient, owners Mr and Mrs Mason rear livestock and cultivate vegetables on their land, providing organic farm to fork food for guests. The whole set up is part of a drive to be more sustainable: kitchen waste is used to feed pigs; glass bottles are crushed to make cement, and grey laundry water refreshes parched soils. In combination with a pricey undertaking to eliminate invasive species, these efforts have created a tropical wildlife haven: noddies nest in coconut palms metres from the dining deck and clouds of enchanting fairy terns circle the island at dawn and dusk. Bike rides and dawn paddleboard excursions are a novel way to observe the wildlife, although sightings are just as good in the shady, sandy gardens of comfortable villas generously spread between the forest and shore.

Book it: Audley Travel (01993 838515;  audleytravel.com ) offers a 14-day trip to Denis (full-board) and Constance Lemuria on Praslin from £7,740 per person (two sharing), including flights and transfers.

8. Desroches

Best for multi-generation and active families Calm waters caress Desroches island, a 35-minute flight from Mahe. But head further out and waves crash against coral reef breaks. The variety of conditions is perfect for learning to jet ski or surf – two of the 70 water and land-based activities offered at Four Seasons Seychelles Desroches, the only resort in this Outer Amirantes group. Beginners can practise balancing on boards with tuition from guides at Tropicsurf, while advanced riders have a chance to hone skills with detailed clinics and lessons on offshore reefs. Ranging from one to seven bedrooms, villas with their own private patch of sand accommodate couples and families who can fill days with kayak rides, fishing trips, tennis games and native tree-planting sessions. A lack of light pollution presents opportunities for stargazing and dinners lit by a sparkling night sky.

Book it: Black Tomato (0207 426 9888; blacktomato.com ) offers a five-night B&B stay from £6,330 per person (two sharing), including flights and transfers.

Best for birders There’s no mistaking the biggest attraction on this northernmost island. Feathers fill every patch of the coralline mass, and during peak nesting and fledging periods (April to October) guests are given earplugs to sleep at night. For birding fanatics, it’s an avian Arcadia. Fearless of humans, 1.5 million resident sooty terns allow guests to come close and photograph their movements. Fairy terns, white-tailed tropicbirds, noddies and frigate birds can also regularly be seen, along with a selection of migrants passing through the Indian Ocean. Stay in two or three-bedroom self-catering villas, stocking up with supplies from a local shop – or book out the entire island for exclusive use. Workspaces with WiFi encourage longer stays for anyone who fancies an alternative office view. Beyond the birds, there are opportunities to witness the largest population of hawksbill turtles in the Seychelles. Come between December and March to watch hatchlings race for the sea.

Book it: Expert Africa (020 3405 6666;  expertafrica.com ) offers an eight-night stay from £2,450 per person (two sharing, 4nts B&B, 4nts HB), including local boat and road transfers. Excludes international flights.

Best for spa worshippers The secret of total relaxation is relinquishing all control, allowing someone else to organise every detail of your day. Taking service to the next level, Anantara Maia assign each guest a personal butler, who can arrange anything from running foam baths to sewing a button onto a shirt. Make any request by WhatsApp and their wish is your command. Designed by Bill Bensley, 30 villas blend into hills rising through 30 acres of tropical forest on the southwest coast of Mahé, overlooking Anse Louis Beach. Dine privately metres from your own lap pool or beachside at a restaurant showcasing the Asian, French and Creole flavours of Seychellois cuisine. Surrounded by a curtain of emerald ferns and spiralling tendrils from a Banyan tree, the spa is a focal point and the first location Bensley identified for his project. Soothed by sounds of the jungle and the touch of expert hands, massages performed in outdoor pavilions are – like everything else at Maia – a cut above the best.

Book it: Original Travel (020 3582 4990; originaltravel.co.uk ) offers a five-night B&B stay at Story Hotel from £1,795 per person (two sharing) including flights.
