Ready for a spa weekend getaway? Yeah, us too. This period of time after holiday gluttony and sloth always puts us in a wellness state of mind. And who doesn’t need some “me” time after all that family activity? A two- or three-night retreat should do just the trick—long enough to take some good deep breaths, but not so long that it’s hard to get back to reality. 

That relatively brief time frame makes it key to keep things reasonably local, to cut down on travel time. And  that  means keeping the  top spa resorts in the United States , Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean top of mind. Here, our picks for the best weekend wellness retreats close to home right now—many of them newly opened or recently updated, and all of them more than ready to welcome you with some of the best massages, facials, fitness workouts, and food and drink around.

Cal-a-Vie Arrow

This French Provençal–style spot forty-five miles north of San Diego has tons to recommend it. For starters, its thirty-two villas sit on more than 500 private acres, ensuring you’ll have plenty of space to yourself. Then there are the sunrise hikes on the resort’s ten miles of private trails, the tennis and pickleball courts, two pools, an eighteen-hole golf course, a stargazing observatory with astronomer-guided lectures, and more than 160 wellness classes from cardio kickboxing to mind-body-spirit tutorials to nutritional lessons. You can enjoy it all—along with daily treatments at the seventeen-room spa—through Cal-a-Vie’s three-, four-, and seven-night packages.  

Blackberry Mountain Arrow

This pair of pastoral retreats in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains —a half hour from the Knoxville airport, and driving distance from many Southern cities—truly feel away from it all. The three-year-old Mountain outpost, with its treehouses, outdoor adventure, and wellness pursuits—hiking and biking, aerial yoga, sound bathing, and guided meditation—is like a souped-up summer camp for well-off, wellbeing- and fitness-minded grownups. The original Farm location, meanwhile, offers a slower-paced, slightly more formal experience, taking the Gentleman (and Gentlelady) Farmer lifestyle to new levels with locally inspired spa treatments and special wellbeing events with guest practitioners.

Jumby Bay Arrow

Since becoming part of the prestigious Oetker Collection of luxe hotels in 2017, this resort occupying the entirety of a 300-acre, car-free private Caribbean island just off  Antigua ’s north coast has received an extensive upgrade. The updated spa now features five treatment rooms, a plunge pool, and open-air relaxation lounge all overlooking the sea. A steam room, sauna, salon, fitness center, and yoga pavilion provide further temptation. Treatments here uniquely combine contemporary modalities with centuries-old local botanical and herbal healing remedies pioneered by the indigenous and Afro-Caribbean communities of the West Indies.

Rancho Pescadero Arrow

Newly reopened, renovated, and majorly expanded, this beloved, barefoot-chic beachfront hotel—located an hour up Baja’s southwest coast from Cabo—now lays claim to 103 rooms (up from the original twelve) plus a 25,000-square-foot nature-led spa with a dozen alfresco treatment room, a lap pool, a hydrotherapy area, and an apothecary where guests create their own remedies using medicinal herb and botanical gardens foraged in the resort’s gardens. Aerial yoga, reformer Pilates, and a CrossFit-style gym are also on offer. Owner Lisa Harper, a former Gymboree CEO who opened the hotel in 2009, teamed up with Mexican architect Alejandra Templeton to craft a zen-feeling aesthetic whose warm neutrals and natural materials encourage rest, relaxation, and mindfulness. 

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach Arrow

Miami has no shortage of epic spa hotels: two Four Seasons, two Ritz Carltons, a St. Regis, plus style-setting independents from the contemporary maximalist fantasia that is the Faena to the mid-century-modern Fountainbleu. It’s an embarrassment of riches. We especially love Acqualina’s 20,000-square-foot spa for its sweeping Atlantic Ocean-facing terrace with pools and waterfall, and its new, natural collagen-based sculpting facials created in partnership with European skincare brand Swissline. Those in the know book the 820-square-foot Royal Spa Suite, a couples’ treatment room designed for Acqualina by Italian fashion house Fendi. Don’t miss the steam room clad entirely with mother of pearl. 

Shou Sugi Ban House Arrow

With its thirteen Japanese-inflected studio suites, five-room B&B, and two longer-stay residences, as well as its barns, pool and spa, this five-acre wellness escape—the Hamptons’ first—is the perfect place to just chill out. The overnight retreats here, which include breakfast and morning and evening movement and meditation classes, give special access to the property, with seasonally changing Eastern and Western spa treatments available for booking. (And the hotel recommends that even in-residence guests book them in advance.) Expected for spring 2023: Shou Sugi Ban Lab, a forward-thinking wellbeing environment combining cutting edge wellness tech like biohacking with traditional healing techniques.

Dunton Hot Springs Arrow

Wild West, but make it luxury. As its name suggests, this 1,500-acre, fourteen-cabin resort in a repurposed former mining town touts its healing waters as a key draw. You can experience the springs in as many as six different settings, including the Bath House spa, which uses all-natural products for its 75-minute-long body scrubs, facials and massages. (The herbal poultice and CBD massages are particularly popular.) There’s also complimentary yoga, plus easy, curated access to the Mountain West’s many pleasures, from horseback riding to hiking to rafting to fly-fishing. 

Meadowood Napa Valley Arrow

Reopened since August 2021 following the devastation wrought by Northern California’s late-2020 Glass fire, this perpetual favorite—whose 36 tastefully appointed cottages and suites sit amid 250 acres—is very much back in business, and it remains a wine country lover’s dream. The all-suite spa offers Pietro Simone facials, a range of massages, and packages inspired by the surrounding landscapes (“From the Garden,” “From the Field,” “From the Earth”). Book a treatment in the partially open-air Treehouse, which has its own fireplace and copper soaking tub. And don’t miss the resort’s three pools and five tennis courts.

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa Arrow

A favorite of Oprah Winfrey’s, this 400-acre Sonora Desert retreat nestles against Arizona’s Santa Catalina Mountains, its rooms, suites, and villas opening to long views. The 30,000-square-foot spa boasts twenty-three indoor and six outdoor treatment rooms and a massive treatment menu that includes therapies inspired by local indigenous healing practices. The more than forty classes and activities cover everything from hiking to horses, beekeeping to cocktail-making, art to aerial yoga, plus a ropes course, yoga, pilates, dream- and gratitude-based modalities and much, much more. 

Salamander Resort & Spa Arrow

In the heart of Virginia horse country, an hour west of  Washington, D.C. , this equestrian-minded escape—designed by its media-mogul owner, BET cofounder Sheila Johnson—boasts a 23,000-square-foot spa unlike anything nearby. The signature massages and body treatments here integrate such unique and diverse elements as Tibetan prayer bowls and CBD, while facials make the most of best-in-class Biologique Recherché products. Therapies like these are just what you’ll want after laps in the indoor or outdoor pool, a yoga class, an invigorating hike, or a horseback or bike ride around Salamander’s bucolic 340 acres.

Ste. Anne's Spa Arrow

Just 90 minutes outside of  Toronto , this all-inclusive wellness resort occupies a castle-like early-nineteenth-century stone manor set on 500 pastoral acres of rolling fields, forests, and gardens. A stay here—in a freestanding cottage or an inn room, all traditionally decorated in homage to the building’s circa-1800 origins—comes with the hotel’s elevated countryside cuisine for all meals (and afternoon tea, too), plus credits to use for wellness classes ranging from yoga to fitness boot camps, meditation to e-biking, and spa therapies focused on botanically based facials, massages, and body treatments. The vibe here is decidedly relaxed: There’s no pressure to ever change out of your spa bathrobe, and many guests never do. 

El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, Santa Barbara Arrow

Who couldn't use some relaxation right now? Spa vacations offer a chance to disconnect from the everyday and to embrace a slower pace and get a little pampering — although, some spas certainly specialize in athletic pursuits, if you want to challenge your body. The good news is that you don't have to travel far: there are dozens of world-class spas right here in the U.S., and many have been named best spas by Travel + Leisure readers.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. In the destination spas category, readers rated properties on their accommodations and facilities, treatments, service, food, and overall value.

Many of our readers' favorite domestic spas are located in the West and Southwest, with three in Arizona, and two in California, New Mexico, and Texas each. Hilton Head Health in South Carolina (No. 7), Westglow Resort & Spa (No. 14) in North Carolina, and Carillon Miami Wellness Resort (No. 12) earned high marks for all-around stellar service and amenities. One reader remarked that the Carillon team still "knocked it out of the park," even with COVID-19 safety protocols in place: "Best spa experience with new experiences that are contactless, too, which is great for these challenging times."

In the Northeast, the Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, Pennsylvania, captured readers' hearts for its excellent bedding and impressive list of activities, including hikes , aerobics, meditation , and yoga . This year's No. 8 also earned praise for its instructors' patience and careful attention: "They are absolutely experts in their various disciplines, and they all will listen to you and modify to help you along." One guest reported staying there 15 times.

Just an hour from Santa Fe, No. 7 Ojo Caliente — one of the oldest mineral-spring resorts in the U.S. — was described as "a diamond tucked away in the New Mexico landscape." What keeps guests returning year after year? It's a combination of the numerous soaking pools, the serene beauty of the desert setting, the casual-chic wine bar and restaurant, and the feeling of being away from it all. Although the address may say Skaneateles, you'll swear that you're in the French countryside when you arrive at the Mirbeau Inn and Spa. Designed with a distinctly European flair, there you can soak in the healing waters then enjoy a fine meal on a pond right out of a Monet painting.

If you are craving a spa vacation in the US, I am your spa cheerleader! I love spas, and while it can feel like a splurge, it is one of my favorite wellness activities.

Spas and wellness facilities offer unique experiences that soothe the mind, body, and soul. These days, work burnout and stress-induced illness seem to be taking over, and as someone with an autoimmune disease, I find spa experiences and getaways to be brimming with wellness benefits.

This guide is not medical advice nor is it approved by the FDA or a medical professional. Please always consult with your doctor before trying any wellness treatments and activities.

Over the years there have been all kinds of interesting spa trends. In spa and wellness spaces you can find treatments not just based on medical and scientific advancements, but also adapted from cultural and spiritual practices around the world.

If this sounds like your kind of getaway, keep reading to learn about 12 wonderfully unique spa experiences that you can find in the USA.

Unique Types of Spa Experiences to Look For

Spa culture began in ancient civilizations, like the bathhouses of ancient Rome. The philosopher Hippocrates believed that “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.” Physicians would give kings vigorous massages with infused oil and soldiers would soak in mineral baths to recover from battle.  

This photo is an example of what a Roman bath looked like. Although this was taken in Bath, England it is one of the best-preserved Roman Baths in the world (and quite extensive! Worth visiting as a tour .)

In recent times, salons and spas have become places to receive treatments for the face and body, with a focus on health and beauty. You can usually find a few different massages, baths, or skin treatments on the menu. Spa culture really goes beyond just a Swedish massage!

Where to Go for Unique Spa Experiences in the USA

Here are some examples of unique spa experiences you can try on a spa day or wellness getaway. Immerse yourself in a salt cave for benefits to your lungs and skin. Try a seaweed wrap or wine bath for their healing properties. Or even consider oxygen-infused facials for anti-aging benefits !

1. Beer Bath Spa

You don’t have to be a beer lover to appreciate the beer baths at Piva Beer Spa in Chicago. Based on an old Eastern European tradition, thermal beer spas are both relaxing and apparently excellent for your skin!

This unique spa experience works with the antioxidants and B vitamins in beer to calm, moisturize, and smooth your skin. You’ll also benefit from Piva Beer Spa’s beautiful setting with mixed woods, calming cool tones, and salt lamps. And after a soak, you can enjoy their relaxation room or sauna.

2. Thermal & Mineral Springs

Cultures across the world have understood the benefits of hot springs for generations. The Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Spa in South Dakota contains thermal springs once used by local indigenous people. Get away from it all at this beautifully rustic resort in the Black Hills.

Moccasin Springs’ water contains an impressive amount of minerals that benefit pain relief, inflammation reduction, and healthier skin, and that’s just the start. Try soaking in several different pools with natural red rock bottoms. You can also choose from a variety of services.

3. Seaweed Wraps

Seaweed has been a part of skin care in Asia for ages. The aquatic plant is full of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that heal, support, and moisturize the skin.

Spa Lux in Tulsa, Oklahoma offers their version of a seaweed body or face mask made of seaweed, mineral water, and essential oils. They pair this with the most relaxing thermal wrap in one of their private rooms; you can also add seaweed treatment with a steam session or massage to maximize the detoxification benefits.

Many spa hotels and days spas offer seaweed wraps on their spa menu across the country, as it has become quite common in the USA now. Consider trying a seaweed wrap at one of these Black Owned spas in the United States for your next spa experience.

4. Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy (RLT) is just one type of light therapy that has been shown to work on the cellular level to improve the health of your body’s building blocks. RLT has become increasingly popular in wellness spaces as an intensive way to treat varioius conditions.

RLT is used for skin issues like wrinkles and sun-damaged skin, but it has also shown positive results for conditions like osteoarthritis and even side effects after chemotherapy. It’s relaxing and revitalizing, making it a great any-day spa treatment.

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on Florida’s Miami Beachfront offers a variety of light therapies, including RLT in their full-body Prism Light Pods. You can also stay at the luxury resort with beautiful light-filled rooms and ocean views.

5. Cryotherapy

More and more research has shown the healing and preventative benefits of cryotherapy. Cold treatment is a safe and painless way to circulate the blood, increase oxygen in the body, and lower inflammation.

Luxury spas have started to offer cryotherapy through different methods. Overall, it’s been shown to have the best results when done regularly over several sessions.

If you’re going to be near Columbia, Ohio, you can book localized cryotherapy or a cryosauna sessions at Elemental Wellness and Cryotherapy . They also offer state-of-the-art health and beauty treatments. This spa has an impeccably designed holistic setting combining natural and industrial elements.

6. Ionic Foot Baths

Foot soaks are considered to be a direct way to rid the body of toxins and they’ve been popular for years. Rockwall Complete Healing and Wellness in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex takes things a step further with ionic detox foot baths.

Negatively charged water is thought to ground the body through the feet. It has been believed to relax the muscles, encourage detoxing in the body, and support the immune system. I have also heard of cancer patients swearing by this after their chemotherapy treatment is done to rid themselves of toxins. There is no medical backing on this treatment though so evaluate it for yourself!

7. Salt Caves

Across Colorado and the rest of the US, you can find salt caves, but only salt caves using dry active salt therapy have been shown to have proven medical benefits . This is when aerosol salt is pumped into a relaxing private room where you breathe it in.

Salt caves are therapeutic to the lungs and sinuses and are used to treat conditions like COPD and asthma. Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, has been proven to relax muscles and calm and heal skin conditions, making it a great unique spa experience.

At Salt of the Earth in Boulder, Colorado you can choose from a few different relaxing rooms where you can rest while you enjoy your salt therapy session. They also use light and sound therapy to enhance your experience.

8. Sound Baths

Some of the most popular spa experiences in the USA right now are sound baths. Different kinds of tonal vibrations are used to evoke physical, mental, and emotional responses.

You can find treatments using drums, singing bowls, chanting, and even relaxation music. Sound baths are meant to relieve conditions like pain, stress, and high blood pressure.

At the Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa , you can enjoy desert-chic luxury digs and mountain views while you try different wellness treatments. Miraval offers 2 meditative sessions where you lie down while singing bowls are played over you. The vibration-focused practice is meant to connect the mind and body and calm the para-nervous system. I find most elaborate sound bath spas are in Arizona and California, with others are at retreats in the mountains like the Adirondacks of New York.

9. Hydrotherapy

The most common types of hydrotherapy used at spas are hot baths and saunas. They’re a great way to relax and support your health and well-being. But a different type of hydrotherapy is becoming more and more popular in spa culture.

Now you can try contrast baths: after relaxing in a hot bath, you quickly dip into a cold plunge! This is very common in Noric spa culture.

Contrast bath hydrotherapy has also been used in sports medicine for a long time as a way to help with recovery and increase performance in athletes. It relieves stress, elevates your mood, and has a variety of benefits for the body.

You can enjoy this treatment at places like the Kabuki Springs and Spa , a Japanese-style bathhouse in San Francisco. Take a deep breath in Japanese-inspired interiors filled with natural elements and deep earthy tones. It’s a beautiful space to try different Asian baths, as well as both Eastern and Western beauty treatments.

10. Float Therapy

Float therapy is making its way into more mainstream parts of spa culture these days. This is a highly researched and very unique treatment where you get inside a tank that contains a shallow bath with high salt content. This is so you float very easily. The door is shut and you stay in the bath for 30 to 60 minutes.

The magnesium in the water is wonderful for your skin and organ functions, but that’s not all. This immersive experience is used traditionally as a form of sensory deprivation to calm the nervous system and relax the mind and body. Some spas also offer floats with a list of elements they can add, like sounds, smells, and light therapies.

Balans Organic Spa in Boston has a private float room with a shower so you can enjoy your session and then rinse off. Enjoy your float in silence or with different music options. The spa is gorgeous and calming, so take advantage of their other therapeutic and beauty services while you’re there.

11. Wine Baths

The Aire Spa in New York City is a stunning setting that inspires relaxation and meditation. It’s the perfect place to try a unique spa treatment like a wine bath. There’s exposed brick, weathered antiques, and hundreds of candles.

Choose from classic spa services at Aire Spa or visit the Roman and Turkish-style baths. The spa is an incredibly romantic setting and all their services are also offered to couples, including the wine bath. At Aire Spa, you can soak in a luxurious red wine bath while you sip on a glass of wine. Afterward, enjoy a detoxifying massage using grapeseed oil.

12. Turkish Baths

While steam rooms, saunas, and baths have always been a part of spa culture around the world, Turkish baths, or hammams, are starting to become a popular trend in the USA. Traditionally, these were steam rooms and baths where people go to detoxify and cleanse the body (but they expand to include massages too.)

Turkish baths, Russian bath, and Moroccan hammam, etc. all have a wide range of benefits. Besides stress release, you’ll enjoy exfoliated skin, relaxed muscles, and better blood circulation.

If you want to try hamman, consider the Joseph Anthony Spa in Philadelphia. There you’ll experience a unique take on the Turkish bath. The entire room is amethyst purple with Swarovski crystals on the ceiling. Light and sound therapy are both used, as well as essential oil-infused steam. There is also a new 20 sqft. Turkish Hammam spa in Miami called Hurrem Hammam that I am dying to go to, and I deeply enjoyed World Spa Brooklyn in NYC too.

What Unique Spa Experience Should you try first?

If you are trying spa and wellness experiences for the first time, I highly recommend starting off slow and working your way up to see what is the best fit for you.

My first spa experiences were gentle Swedish massages, followed by grabbing deals for day passes to a place called Spa Castle in Queens, NY. This offered me access to different saunas and steam rooms so I could see which one I preferred (I like dry saunas best because steam rooms can trigger my asthma). It also helped me experience infrared treatments across the color spectrum, and plan fun spa experiences to share with friends and loved ones.

Whichever you decide, talk to your doctor to make sure spas are a good fit for you (especially if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or asthma, take medication, or have other health concerns). Look at your therapeutic retreat as a way to support your body so you can be fully present for the life you’ve created. After you try one of these unique spa experiences, you might want to make them a regular part of your life!

Travelers can tackle a number of hikes in Asheville for some scenic – and low-cost – fun. You can also stroll along the 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail to learn about the city's unique past, go for a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and explore downtown, where you're bound to come across some of the tiny city's famous street performers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an easy and relatively affordable day trip from Asheville, too.

Bahia Honda Key, Florida

You don't have to visit Key West – or break the bank – to experience the best of the Florida Keys; in fact, the best beaches in the Florida Keys are not even in Key West. At Bahia Honda State Park, for example, you can swim, rent kayaks and snorkeling gear, or even hop on a boat to snorkel in the Looe Key marine sanctuary reef. Entry fees at Bahia Honda State Park are $8 per vehicle with two to eight passengers. Plus, you can camp here for just $36 per night (not including tax and the utility and reservation fees). Renting a cabin costs about $120 per night plus fees from May through October, and slightly more in the cooler months.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

One of the most affordable beach destinations in the U.S., Myrtle Beach is known for its roster of low-cost or free activities that appeal to travelers of all ages. Explore the mile-long Myrtle Beach Boardwalk (home to the iconic Skywheel) as well as Broadway at the Beach (an entertainment complex), both of which offer live entertainment including music performances and fireworks shows. Vereen Memorial Gardens, just north of the city, is also free to visit. When it comes to Myrtle Beach accommodations , there are affordable options aplenty; the Crown Reef Resort, for example, offers an on-site, year-round water park and rates as low as $92 per night for a family of four.

Polk County, Florida

A vacation in Orlando has its time and place, but if you're on the hunt for a cheap weekend getaway, head to Polk County instead. Here, you can explore stunning (and free) parks and nature preserves such as Bok Tower Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, as well as Bonnet Springs Park. The park connects several attractions, including a kids treehouse, a rooftop bar, a butterfly house, The Florida Children's Museum, botanical gardens and more. Legoland Florida Resort and Peppa Pig Theme Park are close by if you decide to splurge on a theme park visit.

New Orleans

There are more things to do in New Orleans than you could ever accomplish in a weekend, but you can still enjoy a short and cheap trip to The Big Easy. Ogle the historic houses in the Garden District, stroll along iconic Magazine Street, wander through the French Quarter (where you're bound to see street performers), or stop in a local eatery for a famous po'boy sandwich or beignet. For affordable accommodations in New Orleans , look outside of the French Quarter.

South Padre Island, Texas

Not only does South Padre Island offer 34 miles of coastline and the cleanest beach water in Texas, but it's also ultra-affordable. Low-cost attractions include Sea Turtle, Inc., which is currently building the world's largest sea turtle hospital, and South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. There are also plenty of places to enjoy fishing, one of the island's most popular activities. A visit to the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site – the last Texas lighthouse open to the public – costs just $5 per adult ($3 for kids). Sandcastle Days, the island's beloved festival that is hosted every October, is also free.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

One of the most beautiful national parks in California , Joshua Tree National Park is also fairly affordable thanks to campgrounds like Jumbo Rocks, where you can enjoy the seclusion of the deserted wilderness. There are more than 100 primitive campsites available here, with reservations required in the busy season from September to May; a maximum of six people can occupy a campsite for just $20 per night (on top of fees to enter the park).

San Luis Obispo, California
