Disney stars are synonymous with possessing the triple threat when it comes to the performing arts: acting (check), dancing (check), singing (check) and evolving into superstars- just take a look at Britney, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato. Enough said. So it’s no surprise then that Lizzie Maguire’s star, Hilary Duff turned her hand to becoming a pop star. Releasing her debut album entitled “Metamorphosis” in 2003, gave Duff the chance to detach herself from the teen idol status she had acquired from The Lizzie McGuire Show and step out presenting this real side of her, Hilary Duff a rock/pop singer and songwriter. With the album reaching number one in the US and Canadian charts and achieving triple platinum, Duff had successfully made the transition from actress into singer. Subsequent album releases including the self-titled “Hilary Duff” and “Dignity” met similar success reaching 2 and 3 in the album charts and allowing her to experiment more with the dance side of pop.

Duff performs with an air of confidence as she struts across stage with her glitzy rocker outfits accompanied by a host of backing dancers. Performing tracks such as “So Yesterday”, “Wake Up” and “Stranger” through an array of coloured lights and watched by thousands of adoring fans, who scream at any given moment taken aback by the more emotive tracks like “Fly” and “Someone’s Watching Over Me”. As far as actress turned singers go, Hilary Duff definitely isn’t a one trick pony.

If Hilary Duff achieved nothing else with her reasonably brief foray into the pop world, she at least provided us with retrospective evidence that not all former Disney child stars wind up making career moves quite as dubious as Miley Cyrus has been the past couple of years. When her TV show, Lizzie Maguire, inevitably ran its course, she moved through the usual pop levels, beginning with the clean-cut fare that characterised her self-titled album - ‘Fly’, ‘Someone’s Watching Over Me’, and apparently concluding - on her most recent album, 2007’s Dignity, with what at the time probably seem liked controversial fare; the mildly-sexualised video for the surprisingly half-decent ‘With Love’, though, is positively puritanical by way of comparison to Cyrus’ recent output. Just last week, though, she re-emerged, with a new single - ‘Chasing the Sun’ - that unsurprisingly sounds about five years behind the current zeitgeist; remember that guy Jack Johnson? It sounds like a cover of one of his songs. Still, a deal with RCA Records for a new album means we should expect heavyweight promotion, and that might include international touring; she won’t be hitting the big venues - not to begin with, anyway - but it’d be daft not to expect a high-budget affair, with a full live band and complex stage show likely to come as standard.

LONG LIVE LIZZIE MCGUIRE! No matter how old my generation gets, a majority of 90s born girls, so it was no surprise that when Hilary Duff decided to break into music that she had a booming fan base right out of the gate. Her bubblegum music and previous acting career had set her up for inevitable success for her first album.

Considering I was also a sucker for Lizzie McGuire, I ended up going to a concert of hers with my other friends. At the time, it was one of the greatest things ever. Completely typical late 90s style, perfect bubblegum tween music that we all knew so well. The show was completely sold out and huge! When she took to the stage the entire place went up in a deafening scream. She performed her entire “Metamorphosis” album that she had just release including “Come Clean,” “The Math,” “Sweet Sixteen” and “Anywhere But Here.” Hilary came off as super sweet, and really was a peer of the audience. She even had her sister, Hayley Duff join her on stage for their cover of “Our Lips Our Sealed.” She closed out the show with a bang with “So Yesterday,” and had the entire crowd join in on the singing.

Take A Look Inside Hilary Duff's Beautiful Family Home

Hilary Duff close up

Hilary Duff has come a long way since her days starring in the hit Disney series "Lizzie McGuire" as a teenager, per IMDb . The beloved tween show follows 13-year-old Lizzie as she navigates the highs and lows of middle school alongside her best friends Miranda and Gordo. Since then, Duff has made five studio albums with plenty of hit songs like "Come Clean" and "So Yesterday." Plus, the actor also starred in a wide variety of movies and graced the small screen with shows like "Younger." Now, Duff, who is a mother of three kids, is back in action with the show "How I Met Your Father," and to celebrate we're taking a look inside her beautiful family home in Los Angeles .

In Duff's home tour with  Architectural Digest , she welcomes cameras inside the 5,260-square-foot Beverly Hills house, which she has called home for almost 10 years. The beautiful Georgian-style house is light and cheerful, with plenty of personal touches like a backyard chicken coop, a well-stocked walk-in closet, and a backyard pool slide for Duff's children to play. The way Duff has decorated and remodeled her home to fit her family's unique lifestyle is inspiring, and we love every one of these cute rooms. Follow along as we take a tour through Duff's amazing living space.

1. Duff originally bought her Beverly Hills home while pregnant with son Luca

white wooden staircase with chairs

One of the main reasons Duff moved into her current home was because it felt peacefully secluded. Duff had always had issues with the paparazzi and was even relentlessly stalked by them when she was nine months pregnant in 2018. So when choosing a house, she needed one with sufficient privacy. Since settling in, Duff has renovated her home twice, noting she has a " small addiction " to interior design projects. Before the remodeling projects, the house was filled with elaborate fountains, outdated floors, and dark colors. Duff lightened everything up with a fresh coat of blush paint on the front door, new child-friendly furniture, and an open-concept kitchen.

According to Better Homes and Gardens , Duff worked with the Studio Life/Style design firm to bring her interior design vision to life. They worked some magic in the foyer area by sewing three different rugs into one runner for the stairs in the foyer . Since finding the perfect rug is always a challenge, you can copy this DIY trick for your home (via A Beautiful Mess ). If you find a rug that's too small for a space, buy multiple pieces and sew them together to create one big, beautiful rug.

2. One of Duff's favorite pieces is the entryway credenza

front entrance vintage midcentury credenza

In Duff's home tour , she notes that her favorite piece is the midcentury credenza in the entrance. As reported by Real Simple , the beautiful mid-century modern piece is a conversation starter. It dated back to the 1950s and was one of the first big purchases the actor ever made when she was just 18 years old. While the credenza has been through a lot over the years — and has the water stains to prove it — Duff still loves the way it resembles a corset. It's also a great place to display small decorative items like candles, crystals, flowers, and artwork at the front of the house.

There's a lot to love about credenzas. These cabinet-style furnishings were first used in Italy in the 14th century as a place to keep food that needed to be checked for poison. After the food was tested, it could be served to nobility (via Elle Decor ). Nowadays, credenzas continue to be popular home furnishing items, used for decoration and storage.

3. Bright pink chairs decorate the formal sitting area

pink formal living room area

California cool pieces blend with Art Deco influences in Duff's sitting room . The bright pink lounge chairs are from Kelly Wearstler , a famed designer known for her colorful and sophisticated style. As reported by Forbes , she is considered to have brought contemporary American design to a new level. Along with pieces from Wearstler, Duff's living room also includes artwork from Kate Hall, lots of family photos, a woven piece from Crate & Barrel, and lovely Sharpie marker drawings on the coffee table from her kids. There's also a cactus in the corner, which Duff takes care of and tries to keep alive.

If you feel inspired by Duff's cool living room, consider incorporating Art Deco influence into your own home. This lavish style from the 1920s mixes perfectly with contemporary looks, and there are plenty of ways to bring it home. For example, bright pops of jewel-tone colors, geometric patterns, bold artwork , and rich materials like marble will all elevate your space instantly with a dose of Art Deco glam (via Better Homes and Gardens ).

4. The casual living space is the heart of the home

family room with fireplace

With cozy couches and an inviting fireplace, Duff's living room is an ideal place for entertaining and spending quality family time. While it doesn't always look so perfect with fluffed pillows and fresh flowers, the room is where the family loves to relax and watch TV together. The television, which is The Frame by Samsung, looks like a picture when not in use. You can customize the background to display family vacation photos or other favorite memories. According to TechRadar , this TV is just as functional as it is fashionable. Also in Duff's living room is a wild, bright pink piece of art from Matthew Palladino and a fireplace with exposed wood.

If you want to take cues from Duff and make your living room feel homier, starting with a comfortable couch is key (via Apartment Therapy ). From there, a stylish coffee table and more decorative pieces like mirrors and chairs will let your personality shine. Offbeat details like artwork will make the room feel like your own.

5. An open kitchen is decorated with bold tiles

open concept kitchen with tiles

Next to the living room is Duff's open-concept kitchen , which she decorated with bold Ann Sacks tiles during her remodel. The star fell so in love with the wild zig-zag pattern that she used it for her backsplash, island, and outdoor patio area. "The tiles screamed at me when I first saw them," Duff told Better Homes and Gardens . "They were so happy. I knew they'd bring a jolt of energy into the house." Blue cabinets and gold open shelving complement the statement tiles. In her home tour, Duff notes that there's always a bowl of fruit on the table (which her kids love to take a bite of and then put back in the bowl) and a stocked bar cart, which was especially important during quarantine.

If you've been thinking about taking your kitchen tile game to the next level, get inspired by Duff's bold look. Tiles are a staple on kitchen walls, not only because they look good but because they also protect against cooking and water stains above ovens and sinks (via House & Garden ). Ceramic tiles are the most popular choice for kitchen backsplashes since they are available in a wide variety of colors and styles (via Forbes ). However, glass, stone, and porcelain tiles are also great options to consider.

6. The elegant dining room table is made from one solid piece of wood

long wooden dining room table

The open kitchen leads to a dining space, where a long, solid wood dining table takes center stage. In her home tour , Duff shares that her dining table is made of a single piece of wood, which has gone through a lot over the years. "Hilary wanted her home to feel feminine and modern but definitely lived-in and cozy," designer Shannon Wollack told Better Homes and Gardens . Much like the water-stained credenza in the entryway, Duff knows that living in a house means the furniture will get banged up and weathered. But she loves that. Above the table hangs a futuristic piece of art from Lindsay Adelman , while French doors and windows bring plenty of natural light into the space.

Choosing the right dining room table for your space includes finding a table that fits your budget and features solid construction (via The New York Times ). Since the table will be the focal point of the room and the place for countless meals, it should also look nice and reflect your personal style.

7. The kids' playroom is filled with cute and friendly pets

fun kids' play room

One of the most fun rooms in the house is the kids' playroom . The space features cabinets stocked with toys, a corner fish tank, and even a crested gecko pet named Chip. The kids' artwork hangs on the walls, along with framed photos and a neon sign that says, "I love you all the way," which Duff often says to her kids. There's also a comfortable couch and a computer added for school time during quarantine. Duff shared that the room used to be their formal dining room, but they never used it, so they reassigned the space. Southern Living notes that with the rise of open floor plans and breakfast bars, fewer people require the space.

If you want to create a play space in your home for letting loose and having some fun, go ahead and let your imagination run wild. Install Lego details on the walls, add a mini climbing wall, or cover the space with vibrant, rainbow colors (via House Beautiful ). Some other good tips to keep in mind include using pieces like bean bags or floor poufs that can be rearranged, or making the room friendly for kids of all ages with a ping pong table or other gaming essentials.

8. Duff's sanctuary features a bathtub and plenty of family photos

relaxing room with bathtub

While Duff's home is certainly family-friendly, the star has her own private sanctuary upstairs, where she escapes to relax and carve out a little time for herself. The room features a vanity space with a light-up mirror, a guitar named Oreo (a gift from her husband, Matthew Koma,) and a luxurious bathtub under the window. Duff loves baths and even had a water birth at home in this space with her daughter Mae in 2021, as reported by Entertainment Tonight .

Duff has undoubtedly created a peaceful space for bath time in her home. To create your own home spa experience, start by making the atmosphere feel serene with lighted candles, placing a bath pillow in your tub, and splashing some of your favorite essential oil into the water (via Byrdie ). Stay hydrated during long soaks by keeping a glass of water nearby, along with some of your favorite snacks and a glass of wine or tea.

9. Duff finds peace in her well-stocked closet

colorful walk-in closet

Of course, Duff also finds solace in her walk-in closet where she keeps her collection of purses, shoes, and clothes. The star, who admits to having a purse obsession, is constantly rearranging her closet and trying to keep it organized. But sometimes that organization bleeds out to her husband's closet, too. When Koma was away on a business trip in 2021, Duff documented cleaning out his closet on Instagram Stories, jokingly calling him a "pack rat," as per People . While having a walk-in closet is certainly a luxury, keeping these spaces clean and not becoming overwhelmed by clutter can be difficult.

According to  Reader's Digest , the optimal way to arrange your walk-in closet is by making different zones for each type of clothing, including shoes, coats, sweater, and bottoms. Casual pieces should be grouped together, as well as formal business pieces and work-out gear. Shelving is also an important part of closet organization, providing a place for folded clothes, bags, and other accessories. Keep your go-to pieces on easy-to-reach shelves, while storing off-season items higher up. If your closet is on the smaller side, decorate with mirrors to create the illusion of more space (via The Spruce ) and don't forget to install some good lighting.

10. Duff's daughter's room is pretty in pink

little kid's room with rainbow

Duff's daughter's room sets the scene for sweet dreams, decorated with soft rainbow hues and a pretty canopy. Hats and balloons hang on the walls, while cute stuffed animal friends hang out around the crib. The adjoining bathroom is styled with pink tiles and sweet gold hardware, making it the perfect place for Duff's little one. In a 2021 Instagram post, Duff revealed that she converted the nursery from her office, and she now has a gold-accented nook in her bedroom to conduct her business. "When @matthewkoma and I got prego with Mae we took over the only spare room in the house, which I used as an office and a place for dog crates lol. So I decided to utilize this sweet nook in our bedroom for a small thinking space/office for myself," she captioned. "I loved the idea of a floating desk so everything still felt very light and sleek."

If you're designing a bedroom for your little girl, look to Duff for inspiration to dream up a sweet space. The ideal girl's room will feel timeless and be neutral enough to grow up with your child, incorporating elements like geometric patterns, fun shapes, and imaginative designs instead of a basic princess theme (via The Spruce ). A cute reading or lounge nook filled with cozy pillows is always a good idea, as well as a chalk wall or whimsical twinkle lights. And don't feel like you have to stick to a pink color palette. Walls painted in soft shades of blue are also a great choice for a girl's room.

11. The bedroom for Duff's son Luca features an epic slide

child's room with slide

Stepping into the epic bedroom Duff designed for her son Luca is like taking a trip to your favorite amusement park. The big space features an upper level, two bunk beds, climbing netting, and even a giant slide to take playtime to the next level. There are also shelves filled with artwork made by Luca during quarantine, stuffed animals, books, and random knickknacks. When remodeling his house, Duff designed it with her son in mind. "This house is a sanctuary for me and Luca, so I always shop with him in mind," she told Better Homes and Gardens in 2018. "He's respectful of our belongings, but I want him to be able to roughhouse and do other kid things here."

According to Cuckooland , adding a slide to your kid's bedroom is a great way to keep them entertained for hours at a time. There are plenty of kids' beds available online from places like Wayfair that come with a built-in slide, or you can easily build a DIY slide on your stairs. You'll just need a few simple materials, including a 3/4-inch sheet of melamine-faced MDF board, pipe insulation, and some mending plates (via The Spruce ).

12. A spacious backyard is perfect for socializing, swimming, and eating dinners

backyard with serene pool

Out in the backyard , Duff keeps things fun and relaxing. There's a serene pool and water slide, lounge area, an in-ground trampoline, and a treehouse. Of course, Duff isn't the only celebrity with an in-ground trampoline. Cara Delevingne also has a series of them scattered across her backyard for her friends to play on, per Architectural Digest .

Duff also has her own little herb garden to improve her green thumb. The family spends a lot of time hanging out back here in the California sunshine, whether eating dinner or swimming the day away. Having ample space outside for entertaining is a big plus, especially during the pandemic.

While there's no shortage of backyard inspiration to draw from Duff's home, one idea you can implement regardless of the amount of space you have is to grow your own herb garden at home. According to BBC Good Food , most herbs grow easily and are guaranteed to make your meal tastier. Plus, if you have kids, it's a fun project to do together, and children can learn the beauty of growing their own food. Some of the easiest herbs to grow include perennials like rosemary, mint, and oregano, but you can also fill your garden with annuals such as parsley and basil.

13. Duff loves taking care of the chickens in her backyard coop

backyard chicken coop area

For a fun project, Duff built a chicken coop  in the corner of her backyard. The actor now has about six chickens running around, and she spends much of her time hanging out and feeding the chickens. According to Elle Decor , Gisele Bündchen, Oprah Winfrey, and Kate Hudson all had chicken coops on their celebrity estates.

Backyard chicken coops are all the rage these days, popping up everywhere in various shapes and sizes. If the thought of raising your own chickens makes you smile, it might be time to look into building a home for your new feathered friends. According to The Spruce , you should start designing your own coop with careful planning and keep things like cost, size, and ease of portability top of mind. Solid floors and construction are a must to keep predators at bay, and the coop should have full-size doors so that you can enter and keep it clean. While you can design your dream coop in any style, be sure to include essentials like nesting boxes, feeders, water boxes, and elevated roosting bars for your chickens to sleep at night.

How Hilary Duff's 'Metamorphosis' Changed The Lives Of Millennial Women Everywhere

Hilary Duff

“Hilary Duff is banned from this year’s talent show.”

These were the words that sent an entire room of Lizzie McGuire merch-wearing 9-year-olds into a frenzy. The year is 2003. “The Lizzie McGuire Movie” had changed the lives of younger millennials everywhere, and Duff released her first studio album, “Metamorphosis,” just months later. I don’t know how my fourth grade music teacher found the confidence to shut down over a dozen synchronized dances and off-key renditions of Duff’s “So Yesterday.” But, to this day, I don’t think I’ll ever forgive her for the absolutely epic performance me and my friends had worked on that’ll never be seen in public. (That said, we absolutely killed our Beach Boys interpretive dance.)

Today, if you ask any early 30-something American woman what “metamorphosis” is, they won’t define the transition of certain creatures into their adult form. Instead, they’ll tell you it’s Duff’s debut album with bangers like “Come Clean,” “Sweet Sixteen” and “Why Not” on the track list. It’s a cultural phenomenon that changed the lives of younger millennials everywhere.

The album debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, just behind Mary J. Blige’s “Love & Life,” before eventually claiming the top spot . While “Metamorphosis ” may have been written off by adults as “bubblegum pop,” its impact 20 years later can’t be ignored. It’s perhaps one of the only reasons younger generations saw the rise of actor-singer crossovers on Disney . That’s right, there’s a world in which, if this album didn’t exist, we might not have had Miley Cyrus, Raven-Symoné, Vanessa Hudgens or many other generationally iconic stars.

Hilary Duff in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie."

Beyond Duff’s undeniable impact on Disney’s business model, for fans, this album was an awakening to what the modern celebrity could be. For Mijal Tenenbaum, 29, “Metamorphosis” was an introduction to not only a welcoming online fandom (on an MSN message board, if you can believe it) — it was an introduction for a then 9-year-old Argentine to American culture and, ultimately, changed the course of her life.

“ I lived in Argentina and we didn’t immediately get the album, but I had downloaded most songs off the internet and knew them all by heart,” Tenenbaum told HuffPost. “I also remember sitting down with my sisters trying to understand the songs — they’re older than me and spoke a bit more English than me back then so they understood things I didn’t.”

“I remember sitting down with the little booklet and listening to the songs, trying to imitate Hilary’s American accent. I now live in the U.S. and people often tell me I sound like I’m from here, and while I did learn most of my English from tutors and studying, I always credit Hilary for the accent,” she continued.

Tenenbaum wasn’t the only tween whom Duff motivated to embrace new sides of themselves. For Alexandra Cohl, 30, the “Metamorphosis” album was one of the reasons she started experimenting with writing and singing in middle school.

“I’m not that far in age from Hilary, so at the time, she was definitely someone in the industry my younger self identified with a lot and also emulated,” Cohl said. “Her career was definitely one that inspired me — especially being a child who loved to perform and do a lot of creative projects in some form or fashion. I totally wanted to act and do music, in part due to her.”

Beyond that, the lyrics on the album helped Cohl process “heavy stuff” during her teen years and even acted as a sounding board for her eventual teen heartbreak.

“It captures that time in my life where I was figuring out being a preteen — discovering what type of passion I wanted to follow in life and also figuring out the emotions that come with being in middle and high school, which we all know can be quite intense,” she said.

For Kristen Maldonado, 33, “Metamorphosis” was her first no-skips album. That’s right, not even her late-’90s go-tos like the Backstreet Boys or the Spice Girls got that honor. From listening to the album on repeat at Applebees to singing under her breath in case someone wanted to make her the next Duff-esque superstar, the then 13-year-old Maldonado remembers one of her favorite songs, “Come Clean,” as a cultural reset.

“Back in 2003, I was listening to ‘Metamorphosis’ at a really pivotal time in my tween-dom,” she said. “Lizzie McGuire was such a relatable character and, while Hilary Duff was breaking out on her own as a musical artist, she still brought that same ‘every girl’ quality to her music.”

“She was only 15 when she recorded this album and she was talking about big life milestones that all teenage girls connect with, from turning 16 to finding your inner strength, the voices in your head that make you doubt yourself to finding your inner strength,” Maldonado added. “It’s really empowering to be able to see a young voice like that connecting and relating with other young people to show them they’re not alone.”

Rachel Martin, 35, was the same age as Duff when the album came out. She remembers her first introduction being the “So Yesterday” music video on MTV and, after hearing the song “Little Voice,” found herself encapsulated by Duff’s musical debut.

“[It was like] she understood exactly what I was going through at the time. She was quirky and imperfect, and having someone like her to be able to relate to and look up to in high school was transformative. She was just like me,” Martin said.

Hilary Duff during the 2004 Metamorphosis Tour at Universal Amphitheatre in California.

Martin was even able to celebrate her love of the album when Duff went on tour in late 2003. “Back then, you still had to line up and purchase tickets in person at Ticketmaster locations,” she said. “I remember my aunt taking my friend and I to line up to buy tickets inside of our local mall at an FYE store at, like, 3 a.m.”

“We wanted to make sure to get there early enough in order to score pit tickets to the show in my hometown, and we did,” she added. “I’ll never forget being front row for that show and being able to hear the songs that I related so much to being sung live.”

While “Metamorphosis” may have been a way for Duff to define herself beyond the Disney Channel, it became a piece of musical history that impacted the lives of so many fans. To this day, people embrace the nostalgia that comes with listening to the album now and bond with others over these shared childhood memories.

“[The album] reminds me of my relationship with my sister, my cousin and my life-long friend. We deeply bonded over those songs and what Hilary was putting out into the world at the time, so it’s always going to feel safe and feel like home and be a way to connect with my inner child,” Cohl said.

For Martin, the album reminds her of high school, especially the “core memory” of her Sweet Sixteen, riding around in a limo screaming the lyrics to “Come Clean” with her best friends.

“Listening back now, [the album] feels like a time capsule of my childhood ... it’s just pure nostalgia,” she said.

Hilary Duff’s ‘Metamorphosis’ Turns 20

The 2003 charmer still feels as fresh as if it were released (so) yesterday.

Leading the early-aughts tween tsunami thanks to her endearing star turn as the one and only Lizzie McGuire, Duff dipped her toe into music with her 2002 album, Santa Claus Lane , a sort of holiday answer to the spiky-pop she-rock revolution Avril Lavigne had kick-started a few months earlier with her debut album, Let Go . But Duff really broke through with her second album, released August 26, 2003.

Metamorphosis may have stung critics like a bee, but it floated like a butterfly with fans, topping the Billboard album chart and eventually selling more than 5 million copies worldwide. A charming and vibrant capsule of the era, Metamorphosis is the kind of underrated gem that may have seemed disposable at the time, but in retrospect showcases the care that went into crafting a set for a specific star that feels age-appropriate, organic, and even adventurous. Somebody call Gordo, and let’s give it a relisten.

“So Yesterday”

Coming hard for Lavigne’s crown, Duff kicks off the album with a kiss-off track so powerful and crunchy, it boggles the mind to realize it only reached No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 . (At least it went to No. 2 in Lavigne’s native Canada.) Written and produced by the mightier-than-Neo production team the Matrix with an assist by Charlie Midnight, “So Yesterday” is the ultimate anthem for someone exiting a relationship that, in retrospect, isn’t worth crying over. A song about maturely accepting heartbreak and disappointment by moving on with clear-eyed wisdom may not be something you’d expect from a 15-year-old, but it works, and damn if it doesn’t still hit hard today.

“Come Clean”

And here comes the monster hit that helped define the era for millennials — “Come Clean” may have risen to only No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it received ubiquitous radio, MTV, and cultural play, including serving as the theme song for the iconic Laguna Beach . A dramatic pop-rock power ballad about stripping yourself down to your deepest emotional truths so that you can be reborn for a fresh beginning — young Hilary was going through it, apparently — the song also featured a popular video meant to showcase a more mature depiction of Duff, emoting from inside her house while a storm pours outside. If you were a certain age during this era, the opening notes have been ingrained into your DNA.

“Workin’ It Out”

Alternating between world-weary diva (“Some days I start off dragging my feet,” our songbird laments) and anthemic shouting (“Hey, hey!”), Duff shows on this track one of the reasons the album is so fascinating. Duff seems to be more interested in a rougher sound that reflects more of a complicated worldview than most pop songs, including the sugar-rush confections many of those who followed in her musical footsteps released. Just check out her iconic spoken word interlude: “It’s hard enough to be what you are/and harder to be what you’re not/hard to know what you need to get/harder to know what you’ve got.” That’s deep, baby!

“Little Voice”

Things get a little psychedelic as Duff snarls, sneers, and smiles through some impressively twisty lyrics on this jam that’s way more complex than anything you’d expect from teen-pop offerings then or now. Something of a spiritual granddaughter to Madonna’s 1999 hit “ Beautiful Stranger ,” this uptempo song is so punchy and fun, it’s surprising it hasn’t caught on as a karaoke favorite or TikTok cover yet — you can hear its scream-and-smile-along potential just bursting to be rediscovered.

“Where Did I Go Right?”

The drama builds on this dark jam as Duff shares all her relatable foibles — and her surprise that they haven’t driven away a wonderful new love interest. This is another song that, as enjoyable as it is in its present form, could really draw some modern-day attention with a more mature voice performing it with a spare arrangement. (Not to get too wild here, but this has wedding-song potential if the right artist reinterpreted it.) This song is a testament to how thoughtfully Duff and her team assembled this album to ensure that it seems like both a true reflection of the artist as she was and how she’d like to be — that perfect relatable/aspirational sweet spot that we all look to pop stars to provide.

“Anywhere but Here”

While not inspired by Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman — at least, we don’t think so — this cut feels like a fun summer road trip song, best listened to with the windows rolled down and every passenger singing along at the top of their lungs. Listened to on its own now, it’s pleasant and well put together but largely forgettable. While a likable vocalist, Duff has never had the type of pipes that can take charge of a song and lift it up, so the relatively straightforward nature of this tune doesn’t give her much to spark from. Still, as far as album tracks go, it’s a nice addition.

An enduring anthem trumpeting the need for more women in STEM masquerading as a clever “be my equal, and treat me respectfully or go away” jam, this rockin’ little number was obviously fun to write and sing. Filled with smart mathematical wordplay and an irresistible staccato delivery, this could have been a dark horse single in a different part of the Hilaryverse. All jokes aside, this would actually be a really fun track for the Foo Fighters to tear into, and here’s hoping they do. (Duff and Dave Grohl have collaborated before!)

“Love Just Is”

The strain shows a little here as what could have been a soft, soaring ballad gets weighed down by awkward lyrics and the limitations of Duff’s sweet but thin voice. It’s still lovely, and she achieves a nice balance the further into the song you get, but the bones of a better song are so visible, it’s a little frustrating that this is where they stopped. This had the potential to be as airily beautiful as Kelly Clarkson’s 2004 version of the Avril Lavigne-penned “ Breakaway ” — and even sounds like it a little — but it just needs a more delicate touch and a stronger vocal. Maybe a duet could heal the tragic Lavigne/Duff rift at long last?

“Sweet Sixteen”

Co-penned by big sister Haylie Duff, this upbeat bop worked its way deeper into the cultural consciousness far beyond its appearance on this album because it was the theme for MTV’s uber-popular My Super Sweet 16 . Running for 10 seasons over 12 years, this reality show made waves around the world — and let’s hope it helped further line the pockets of both members of the House of Duff. (The world would soon get to enjoy the sisters dueting on Go-Go’s and Madonna covers.) To anyone over the age of 16 — both then and now — it might be harder to make a case for this being much more than pleasurable fluff, but sometimes that’s what hits the musical spot.

Further adding to the surprising depth of the adult talent pool working on creating this album, this rock-flecked cut was co-written and produced by the baddest “ Bitch ” of all, Meredith Brooks. It’s thanks to that true matriarch of rock craftsmanship that the song works as well as it does, but it’s impossible not to feel that this version is giving a “little girl playing rocker dress-up” vibe. Forgive me, Mother Duff, but I have to say it: Sounding like a wild kissing cousin to 2001’s “ Get the Party Started ” by Pink, “Party Up” would not only have been a better song if that popstress had recorded it, but it also probably would have been a huge chart hit.

“Metamorphosis”

Duff earned her only songwriting credit on the set with this jangly ode to her own ongoing transformations and growth. With just a sprinkling of 1995’s “ My Love Is for Real ” by Paula Abdul and 1994’s “ Confide in Me ” by Kylie Minogue in the musical mix, this track hints at the future direction Duff’s musical career would take with her best-reviewed album, 2007’s Dignity , which positioned her to become America’s next dance music goddess. (In a just world, songs like “ Play With Fire ” and “ With Love ” would have made that a reality. Thankfully, her epic moves live on.)

“Inner Strength”

Haylie Duff solely penned this incredibly spare number that clocks in at just over a minute and a half. Somewhere between a ballad and spoken word, it has the potential to feel like filler, but somehow it doesn’t. Maybe it’s the combination of the lyrics, which definitely feel like something written by an earnest teenage sister with the best of intentions to inspire, and Duff’s straightforward, unaffected vocal, but this may truly have been the most direct, honest pop music recording in 2003 — and maybe even beyond. It’s charming, poignant, and another sign that this album is something a little different and more substantial than most other music aimed at younger audiences at the time.

Included as a bonus track, this song originally appeared in a slightly different form as the lead single of The Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack, which went on to sell more than 2 million copies in the U.S. alone. (The movie, which served as a series finale for the TV show, made more than $55 million worldwide and earned Duff coveted Kids’ Choice and Teen Choice awards.) In addition to empowering those who dress in yellow to be brave enough to dare to dress in gold, this upbeat anthem is all big pop hooks and rushing-forward charm and proves to be something of a “snack cake” song to end the album — hardly groundbreaking or unforgettable, but sweet and satisfying enough to make you want more of that wonderful Hilary Duff.
