Nationwide Flexplus but it costs £13 per month.
Halifax Ultimate Reward £17 per month but pay in a certain figure per month - sorry can't recall how much - and they give you £5 back. Offers Allianz insurance with cruising but not the bells and whistles. Does have benefit of offloading cover.

I'm with Natwest and travel insurance policy included with Platinum Account seems to be good
For Cruise cover you have to distinguish two separate sections:
1) Are you covered for medical and evacuation whilst on the ship
2) Are you covered for additional things like missed ports.
We have the Nationwide plus account which covers the first one (which is the essential part). The second one is an optional extra if you want it.

Yes that's what I meant by bells and whistles. Do beware some policies do not include item 1.

Trouble with Halifax Ultimate is you have to pay £1500 minimum into account each month and the biggie is have a balance of £5000 or more for every day of the month to get the £5 back.

You do pay in £1500 or more but there is no obligation to have £5000 in your account. You need to spend £500 a month on your debit card which with fuel and food is sadly easily achievable! We use ours for household bills and it never has that amount in it, at most usually £2,000 at a time.
There is no requirement on the Nationwide Flexplus account to have regular amounts paid in, or to use it for D. D. payments etc. We no longer use it as our principal current account so don't have a lot in there. Also, if you have a joint account both account holders are covered.

Correct we get the five pounds a month than they take seventeen off us to run it
Having tipped over the 75 age, there are not many Banks that will cover me. Co op does until you are 80, so I may change to them this year. Anyonne with them ?

Nationwide will including over 80, but at an additional premium.

If you dont spend £500 every month on your debit card which is not easily achievable for everybody you have to have £5000 in your account for each day of the month to get £5 reward cashback.

Nationwide Flexplus covers you for travel insurance up to the age of 70 and over that you have to pay a premium of £65 every year and have a medical screening on a yearly basis.

Hi, We are with Barclays Travel Insurance. They have 2 levels £12.50 and £18. We have the Travel Plus Pack at £18pm which gives us worldwide cover, RAC recovery in UK and Europe and 6 Airport Lounge Passes a year. We used to have RAC cover which cost us about £120 p.a. and if you use Airport Lounges on special offer, it would still be about £20 ea...so £216 per year for the travel insurance is very cheap. They give full coverage for cruising and repatriation. I believe this Travel insurance is to the age of 80. (we are 66 and 69).
The downside...sort of. The insurance only covers for holidays/cruises up to 31 days. The upside..they will give you full cover for any additional days for a one off payment. For example: we are on a 65 day cruise around South America and back through Caribbean. We had to pay an additional £236 for the 2 of us. We are away in France and Germany for 75 days with our car and caravan and the cost for this including upgrading the RAC cover was £136. For us this works out very cheaply considering what P&O travel insurance quoted us for the single trip around south America!!...I must look out the quote again.
Lloyd's cover you till the age of 80. That's with Allianz insurance cover for £21 per month.

Yes I did say that. As I say we use ours for household expenses so don't find £500 difficult but I acknowledge everyone is different. However the travel insurance is excellent and with Allianz will cover my husband's myriad of serious health conditions on renewal for £293 a year compared to the £1,400 we had to pay Avanti in September for insurance that doesn't have the offloading cover.

Intetested as to why you use a debit card rather than a reward credit card (B.A, Virgin, IHG, Tesco - which includes several cruise lines in their reward scheme - etc.)?
Only use Amex credit card mainly for travel. I fly a lot so have my monthoy debit card linked to Virgin to get extra shopping points which become free flights or upgrades. I also use the debit card to get the benefits on Halifax account mentioned above. My husband's travel insurance costs mega amounts so with phone insurance and RAC spending £500 per month in groceries and fuel is worth the price of £17 per month reduced by a fiver.

My partner has a Nationwide FlexPlus account, and the annual travel insurance covers me too.

That's good - I thought it had to be a joint account for both to be included. 👍
For the nationwide account, you only need to make it a joint account for the car breakdown insurance part, so that you can both call them out whatever vehicle you are driving.

No it covers not just 2 but your dependent children as well.

Does Halifax Ultimate Reward Travel Insurance Cover?
- Coverage for you, your living spouse, and any children under the age of 18 (or 24 if they’re in full-time education).
Does Halifax travel insurance cover cancellation?
There is now coverage if you are overseas and are ordered to return home or prefer to leave early to avoid having to quarantine when you return due to an epidemic or pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) or a government body. The UK government or the government of the nation you’re visiting could issue the order to come home.
If you or someone you’re traveling with has scheduled to fly and the carrier or a government body refuses to allow you go because you or they are showing symptoms of a contagious sickness at the time of boarding, you or they are entitled for additional cancellation coverage.
If anyone traveling with the insurance holder has been advised to quarantine owing to a potential exposure to COVID-19, cancellation coverage will now be offered for those protected under the policy. Local lockdowns and a broader quarantine order are not included in this.
If you become unwell while traveling, you are still insured for emergency medical care. Anyone planned to go and protected under the policy will still have cancellation and medical coverage if they are required to quarantine on an individual basis.
On December 1, 2021, NHS Test and Trace / NHS Test and Protect (Scotland) contacts a friend you’re traveling with and informs them that they need to self-isolate and will be unable to accompany you. You will be insured for travel cancellation in this case.
You are scheduled to depart on December 1, 2021. There were no restrictions on traveling to your destination at the time you booked. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s travel advice to that place changes two days before your journey begins, and now advises against all but essential travel. As a result, you must reschedule your vacation. You would not be protected for any cancellation expenses in this case, and you would need to seek compensation from the travel provider or another source, such as your credit card issuer.
It is critical that you study the terms and conditions of travel insurance to verify that the coverage matches your requirements.
What is covered by Halifax Ultimate Reward account?
The family travel insurance policy covers you, your spouse or partner (if you live together), and any children under the age of 18, or 24 if they’re in full-time education. Personal goods, specific sports and hobbies, and golf excursions are all covered.
Existing medical issues are not covered unless they are initially agreed upon with the insurer, in which case an additional premium may be required.
- Multi-trip travel around the world, including specific winter sports and golf excursions. There’s also coverage for UK excursions that include at least two nights of pre-booked lodging.
- Your children – any of your children who are 18 years old or younger, or who are 24 years old if they are in full-time education. When traveling with the account holder or a responsible adult, you are covered.
- As long as they reside with you, your partner can be a spouse, civil partner, or partner.
- If your personal baggage is lost, damaged, or stolen, you may be entitled to compensation of up to £2,500. This includes assets worth up to £500 and a single article, pair, or set of articles worth up to £500.
- Personal money is covered up to £750 in the event of loss or theft. This includes up to £300 in cash coverage. For those under the age of 16, the amount is limited to £50.
- Pre-existing medical issues are not covered unless the insurer has agreed to cover them.
- The excursion with the longest duration is 31 days. A maximum of 31 days of coverage in a calendar year for winter sports.
- Children are only protected if they are accompanied by you, the account holder, or another responsible adult.
- If you go against the recommendation of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) or any regulatory authority, you are not covered.
- If you are unable to travel or prefer not to go because the FCDO or another equivalent government organization in another nation advises against travel due to a pandemic, you are not covered.
- When the account holder reaches the age of 71, all coverage terminates. As long as the account holder is under the age of 71, their spouse, partner, or civil partner (with whom they live) is insured until they become 71. Eligible children can also be covered if they are traveling with the policyholder’s spouse, partner, or civil partner.
If you need support when traveling abroad, dial +44 (0)208 239 3931 for Allianz Assistance’s 24-hour assistance line. Call Allianz Assistance at +44 (0)345 124 1400 if you need to lodge a claim or want additional information. You can also submit your claim online through the Allianz Assistance Hub, which is accessible via your banking app or Online Banking.
AWP Assistance UK Ltd (business as Allianz Assistance) administers the policy, which is underwritten by AWP P&C SA.
Please note that these are only a few of the key issues; the policy document included in the Ultimate Reward Current Account Getting Started Guide has complete details of the limitations and exclusions (PDF 1.3MB).
As part of the account application procedure, we will also send you the Insurance Product Information Booklet (PDF 2.4MB).

Do the Halifax do travel insurance?
Overview of Halifax travel insurance. Halifax’s Ultimate Reward Current Account package account includes travel insurance. For a monthly charge of £17, the account also includes AA breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance, and home emergency cover. AXA Insurance UK plc underwrites its insurance.
What is not covered in travel insurance?
Baggage delay, damage, and loss plans do not cover all of your belongings. Glasses, hearing aids, dental bridges, tickets, passports, keys, cash, and cell phones are all common travel insurance exclusions. These things are sometimes covered, but only up to a particular cost limit, so if you have several expensive electronic items (such as a laptop, tablet, and mobile phone), you may not have enough coverage to cover the loss of all of them.
Is Halifax Ultimate Reward account changing?
If we don’t hear from you by May 15, 2020, your account will be converted to a current account, and you won’t be eligible for monthly Reward Extras. You can upgrade to a Reward Current Account at any time after your account has been converted to a Current Account if you believe it is the ideal account for you.
We’re also adding a £3 monthly account maintenance fee on June 1, 2020, although this won’t apply if you deposit at least £1,500 into your account each month.
Between June and August, we won’t charge the £3 monthly account maintenance cost to help you get acclimated to your new account.
However, you must still pay £1,500 each month to be eligible for your reward.
To help you decide if this account is perfect for you, we’ve highlighted everything you’ll need to do to obtain Reward Extras.
Can I downgrade my Halifax Ultimate Reward account?
It’s good news for existing Halifax customers since if you haven’t received a switching bonus from Halifax since April 2020, you can still claim the bonus.
However, unlike Natwest, Halifax would not allow you to switch into an existing account and receive a bonus. You will need to create a new account.
If you have a Halifax “Current Account
The Current Account from Halifax is a no-frills ordinary account. If you have this, all you need to do now is create a Reward or UItimate Reward account.
If you have a Halifax Reward account
Many of you, I’m sure, already have this account thanks to the generous £5 per month offer. As a result, you’ll need to create an Ultimate Reward account. You can downgrade the account once you’ve switched and received the money if you don’t want to maintain it (details below).
If you have both the Reward and Ultimate Reward accounts
If you already have both of these accounts, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Simply downgrade one of your existing Halifax accounts to a different type of Halifax account. After that, reapply for the same account. Then switch back to normal mode! Halifax has confirmed that this is acceptable.
Of course, there may be some differences in your insurance policies if you do this with the Ultimate Rewards account, so compare them before deciding to downgrade the old account.
How do I claim on my Halifax phone insurance?
If you haven’t already done so, you can register your mobile phone number with the insurer via online banking or by dialing 0345 124 1400.
Raising a claim
You must notify the authorities and your airtime supplier as quickly as possible if your phone is lost or stolen. If you do not do these steps, your claim may be denied.
- Your phone’s make and model. Check your instruction manual for this information, or remove the back cover and battery to find a label with this information.
- Your network/service provider. Tip: Your service provider’s information is frequently displayed on your phone’s screen or on your contract or monthly statement.
- The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique identifier for mobile devices. Tip: Dial *#06# on your phone’s keypad to get this information shown on your phone’s screen.
- Click on your Ultimate Reward Current Account once you’ve enrolled into Online Banking.
- Then, under the ‘Account information and benefits menu,’ select ‘View account benefits.’
- Your policy information will be automatically loaded if you’ve already entered your mobile phone insurance data.
- If you want to file a claim, go to ‘View and update details’, then ‘Make a claim,’ and follow the onscreen instructions.
What is Halifax Reward net?
The Halifax Incentive account is now fee-free and offers a £2 monthly reward provided you deposit at least £750, pay out two or more direct debits, and keep your account in good standing. You have until June 12 to determine whether or not to opt-in if you opened your Rewards account after March 13th.
This packaged account costs £19 per month
Halifax Ultimate Reward is a packaged bank account . It gets a bundle of insurances that could save you money on getting them individually. Here’s what you get with the Halifax Ultimate Reward account.
Some articles on the site contain affiliate links, which provide a small commission to help fund our work. However, they won’t affect the price you pay or our editorial independence. Read more here.
Note that this is just an overview of the insurances offered with this account — there may be exclusions, excesses and limitations that we’ve not covered below. You should have a look through the documents about the policies to make sure it suits you.
Halifax Ultimate Reward vs Reward Account
The Ultimate Reward account is an upgrade to the Reward account, so you get all the same benefits with this one as you do with the Reward account, including the option to choose between three monthly rewards: either £5 in your account, a cinema ticket or three digital magazines.
There are a few hoops you have to jump through to get the rewards, which we explain in full in our review of the Halifax Reward account .
What do you get with the Halifax Ultimate Reward Account?
The Halifax Ultimate Reward Account costs £19 a month. It comes with worldwide family travel insurance, family breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance for the account holder and home emergency cover.
We’ve included an estimated value of each benefit. This is based on getting individual insurance with similar cover. Where the cover offered by this account is family cover, we’ve searched comparison sites for a family of four. This is just to provide you a guide, and we haven’t checked that every aspect of the insurance is the same.
Travel insurance
- Provided by: AWP Assistance
- Estimated value : £130
- This is based on quotes we found for a family of four getting a worldwide multi-trip annual insurance policy
You get included multi-trip travel insurance for you and your family. The insurance covers you for cancellation, medical costs and personal belongings. You get some winter sports included, as well as golf holidays and UK getaways.
Yours and your partner’s children are covered when they’re travelling with you or another responsible adult. They need to be under 18, or 24 and under if they’re still in full-time education.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
If you’ve got pre-existing medical conditions then they won’t be covered unless you contact the provider AWP. You might be charged an additional premium to cover them. You get a 14-day cooling-off period when you get this account, so you’ll be able to find out if it’s suitable for you during this period.
AA Breakdown cover
- Provided by : the AA
- Estimated value : £210
- This is based on breakdown cover for a family of four
You also get UK breakdown cover for yourself and your family. You’re covered whether you’re the driver or the passenger, which is decent cover.
To be covered as well, your family needs to live at the same house as the account holder, or a student away at university.
Mobile phone insurance
- Provided by: Assurant
- Estimated value: £120
- This is based on quotes for insurance for the latest Apple iPhone for a similar level of cover
The account holder (or holders, if you have a joint account) gets mobile phone insurance included with the account. This gets you repair or replacement if your phone breaks, or is accidentally damaged, lost or stolen.
Home emergency cover
- Provided by : Inter Partner Assistance S.A
- This is based on quotes for similar home emergency cover
Here’s where Halifax Ultimate Reward is different to others, as this is the only packaged account that offers this as a benefit. It covers things like your central heating breaking or a burst pipe. You can claim up to £250 each time to get the problem dealt with.
Waived card fees abroad
Halifax usually charges 2.99% when you use your card abroad. With the Ultimate Reward account, you won’t be charged for making payments abroad or withdrawing money abroad.
While this is great, it’s not a reason to choose this account. There are plenty of other free debit and credit cards that you can use abroad without paying fees, including Chase , which lets you earn cashback on your spending.
Just be sure to pay in the local currency when spending or withdrawing abroad to avoid being charged additional fees.
How Halifax Ultimate Reward differs from other packaged bank accounts
✅ Worldwide family travel insurance ✅ Includes home emergency cover ✅ Breakdown cover is for the whole family ❌ Mobile phone insurance is for the account holder only ❌ Breakdown cover is UK only
Customer reviews of Halifax Ultimate Reward
Customers of Halifax Ultimate Reward have given the account 3.99/5 over at our sister site, Smart Money People. Customers feel that the monthly cost is worth it and that the cover they get is excellent.
A lot of the negative comments were in relation to the home emergency cover, with customers struggling to make claims.
Is Halifax Ultimate Reward worth it?
Zoe’s analysis.
This is the only packaged account we’ve reviewed that has home emergency cover included, but it’s a particularly expensive account, especially considering that you don’t get mobile phone insurance for the whole family.
The travel insurance included is excellent, with the entire family included, however, you’re better off with a cheaper account, like the Virgin Money Club M account at £12.50 per month. You don’t get home emergency cover, but this might fall under your home insurance policy, so you may have the insurance you need already.

The additional premium to get cover for pre-existing medical conditions is exorbitant. When I made enquiries, the extra premium was more than the cost of a stand-alone annual travel policy with a major provider. These accounts seem to be tailored for young families.
I mean, “Reward”, “Ultimate Reward”, where are they or can they going to take it next?
Does anyone else just yearn for the time when a bank account was just a bank account?
What is the point of all this? Who’s got the time to try and work out whether or not it’s worth getting any of these, and that means even after reading a lengthy review like this you’d need to spend more time deciding whether it was worth it before you take the plunge. And then probably still regret it when you try to make a claim, apparently.
Who on their deathbed has ever said, “I regret not spending more time juggling my money between my 15 bank accounts in order to get an extra £50 over a year, or working out which packaged accounts are better than the others?

Taking a cruise is one of the easiest ways to travel, but cruising isn’t immune to unexpected hiccups. Sudden illness, travel delays, or other unforeseen events could cancel or interrupt your cruising plans — you might even need medical coverage.
With cruise insurance, you’re covered for unexpected issues that can interfere with your travel plans . Read on to learn what cruise insurance is, how to get it, and how to find the best cruise insurance policies, whether you’re buying directly from the cruise line or a third-party insurance company.
The right cruise insurance policy offers the coverage you need at a good price, but policies aren’t one-size-fits-all. We’ve run quotes for various coverage scenarios — from seniors to adventure tours — to find the best cruise insurance policies .
Consider these travel insurance policies for your next cruise:
Best Cruise Travel Insurance for Seniors: Seven Corners
Seniors cruising the world can get comprehensive coverage from Seven Corners Travel Insurance . We were quoted $89 for a 70-year-old cruising Mexico . The Seven Corners Trip Protection Basic policy offers trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage, and medical evacuation, along with COVID-19 cancellation and medical coverage.
Comprehensive travel insurance, regardless of your age, is widely available and relatively affordable. Check out our complete guide to travel insurance for seniors .
Best Cruise Travel Insurance With COVID-19 Coverage: battleface
If you’re concerned about COVID-19 derailing your cruise travel plans, getting cruise travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage is essential. The battleface Discovery Plan covers COVID-19 cancellation and medical expenses, along with regular trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and medical emergency coverage. We were quoted $36.54 for a 35-year-old cruising Italy on this plan.
Best Cruise Travel Insurance for Young Travelers: Aegis
Young travelers often have the lowest-priced travel insurance policies. We got a quote for just $30.27 from Aegis for a 22-year-old cruising the Bahamas . The Aegis Go Ready Choice policy covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation, trip cancellation and interruption, medical evacuation, and medical expenses.
Best Cruise Travel Insurance for Adventure Tours: IMG
Are you planning adventurous excursions on your cruise? IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel Lite , with options for winter, adventure, and extreme sports, can give you the coverage you need. We were quoted $58.87 for a 40-year-old traveler cruising to Costa Rica with plans to zipline . It covers trip cancellation and interruption, medical expenses, medical evacuation, and adventure sports with some exclusions, such as diving and adventure races.
Your travel insurance might not cover everything you want to do — particularly if you plan on adventure activities. Here’s our complete guide to adventure and extreme sports travel insurance .
Best Cruise Travel Insurance, Cancel for Any Reason Coverage: John Hancock Insurance Agency
If you’re especially concerned you may need to cancel your cruise, Cancel for Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel your trip and receive partial reimbursement for nonrefundable trip expenses, even if you cancel for reasons not normally covered by trip cancellation coverage. We were quoted $100.50 for a 55-year-old cruising Alaska for John Hancock Insurance Agency’s Silver plan , which reimburses up to 75% of your trip cost under Cancel for Any Reason coverage. It also offers coverage for COVID-19 medical and cancellation, trip cancellation and interruption, and medical expenses and evacuation with primary coverage.
Cruise insurance is travel insurance that covers cruises . It can help you manage all the what-ifs on your cruise. What if you need to cancel your booking? What if your flight is late? What if you get sick or hurt? Travel insurance for cruises can cover you for all of these things.
Many travel insurance policies cover cruises, but cruise insurance may be tailored to the risks of cruises, covering transportation, accommodations, and activities. Getting travel insurance for cruises can offer peace of mind if you’re concerned about losing nonrefundable trip payments, travel delays, or covering emergency medical care.
Cruise bookings can be unforgiving, and cruise insurance can help you minimize your risk of losing the money you’ve paid for your trip. Travel insurance coverage is often a good idea if you’re concerned about losing nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses or covering emergency medical expenses .
Because cruises are often less flexible than other types of travel, it’s generally a good idea to get cruise travel insurance. For example, you might be able to rebook a flight or hotel room, but if you cancel your cruise, you could lose your deposit or more. Often, cruise lines won’t offer any refunds if you cancel within a certain period before your cruise, such as 14 or 30 days .
Additionally, you shouldn’t expect your U.S.-based health insurance plan to cover you on your cruise, especially if you’re on an international cruise. And it’s exceptionally expensive if you need to be evacuated for a medical condition.
While everyone hopes for smooth sailing, the reality is a lot of unexpected issues could pop up on your cruise. Your flight to the cruise port could be delayed, you might get sick or injured on your cruise, or you might have to cancel the whole thing if illness or obligations prevent you from going on your cruise. A hurricane could interfere with cruising in storm hotspots such as the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
Cruise insurance can offer financial support for many unexpected problems you might experience with a cruise. And with a 24-hour travel assistance hotline , you can get knowledgeable help whether you need to find a local pharmacy or coordinate the replacement of lost travel documents such as your passport.
That said, you might have travel insurance coverage available with a credit card . Some credit cards offer travel insurance benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical treatment and evacuation, and travel delay coverage. Still, you should check the details of your credit card’s coverage to ensure it’s enough for your needs.
Looking for a credit card with travel protections? Read our guide to the best credit cards for travel insurance coverage and protection.
Generally, expect cruise insurance to cost between 5% to 10% of the total cost of your cruise . For a $3,000 cruise, you’ll typically pay between $150 to $300 for comprehensive travel insurance coverage. But keep in mind several factors influence the cost of cruise insurance, including:
- Add-ons, such as CFAR
- Coverage options
- Cruise cost
- Deductibles and limits
- Destination
- Group policies
- Traveler age
- Trip duration
Learn more about travel insurance costs in our guide to the average cost of travel insurance .
Each travel insurance policy is unique, but travel insurance for cruise coverage typically includes:
- 24/7 Assistance: You can get 24/7 support for itinerary changes, rebooking, medical emergencies, and more.
- Baggage Protection: Your luggage is covered for loss, theft, or damage on your flight or during your cruise.
- Cabin Confinement: You may get reimbursement if you have to stay in your cabin during your cruise, such as a required quarantine due to COVID-19.
- Cancel for Any Reason: Usually available as an add-on, CFAR travel insurance allows you to cancel your cruise for any reason and receive a partial reimbursement of your nonrefundable travel expenses.
- Itinerary Changes: You can get covered for changes in your cruise’s itinerary, missed port calls, or extended delays beyond your control.
- Missed Connections: If you miss your cruise departure due to a flight delay or other covered reason, you can get reimbursed for your nonrefundable travel expenses.
- Medical Emergencies: Cruise insurance can cover medical treatment on the cruise and may offer coverage for medical evacuation.
- Trip Cancellation or Interruption: You can get reimbursed for your nonrefundable travel expenses if you cancel your cruise or end your trip early due to covered reasons such as illness or injury. You’re typically covered if the cruise line cancels due to mechanical issues, weather, or other unforeseen events.
Cruise-specific travel insurance may also offer reimbursement if your cruise ship is disabled. And if you want to cover shore excursions, be sure to include the cost of excursions in your total travel cost when you get quotes for cruise insurance.
While these coverage types are common among cruise insurance policies, checking the terms and conditions to confirm all coverage areas is a good idea.
Types of Cruise Insurance
There are many options for travel insurance, and you can generally choose as little or as much coverage as you’d like. You can opt for a comprehensive travel insurance policy, which may offer Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, or you might prefer to limit your costs and choose just the coverage you need. For example, you might choose standalone trip cancellation insurance or a travel medical insurance policy but decide you don’t need coverage for missed connections or baggage.
What To Look for in a Cruise Travel Insurance Policy
Consider these factors as you compare the best cruise travel insurance policies:
- Cancellation Window: Understand how many days before your cruise departure you must cancel to qualify for reimbursement.
- Coverage Availability: Travel insurance policies typically offer cruise coverage, but it’s best to confirm that a policy specifically covers cruises before you purchase it. Also, consider availability for coverages that may be important to you, such as CFAR or adventure sports.
- Customer Reviews and Reputation: You can get insight into the insurance provider and how claims and customer service work by reading customer reviews and ratings.
- Eligibility Criteria: Cruise insurance policies may have eligibility criteria such as limits on age or trip duration and preexisting conditions. For example, some travel insurance policies max out at 90 days.
- Exclusions and Limitations: Read the policy to understand what’s excluded or limited specifically to cruise-related coverage, such as reimbursements for port closures, itinerary changes, or medical incidents on the cruise.
- Policy Cost: Get multiple quotes and compare each cost and coverage value to ensure you get a good value for your cruise insurance policy.
- Purchase Timeline: You’ll usually need to purchase your cruise insurance within a certain period of booking your trip, so be sure you’re buying your policy within that timeframe.
- Reimbursement Structure: Review the cruise insurance policy to confirm how much you can be reimbursed for under qualifying circumstances, such as if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip.
You can buy cruise insurance from the cruise line when you book, or a travel agent may offer cruise insurance plans. You also have the option to purchase cruise trip insurance independently. It’s a good idea to get multiple quotes to compare your costs and coverage and get the best deal on cruise insurance.
You should buy cruise insurance when you make your first deposit so you’re immediately covered for trip cancellation. Here are some of the options and coverages if you purchase cruise insurance directly from the cruise line:
Before you purchase cruise insurance from a cruise line, compare your third-party options. You can get quotes from multiple travel insurance companies at once using a travel insurance aggregator such as Squaremouth .
Even a meticulously planned cruise can run into unforeseen disruptions — and cruise insurance can come in handy for the unexpected.
Cruise insurance covers you for sudden illnesses, travel delays, and more, offering financial protection so you’re safeguarded against uncertainties. Whether you get cruise insurance from the cruise line or third–party insurance providers, understand your coverage and how it protects your investment in cruise travel.

However, this is just a temporary measure. In the near future we will be able to offer travel insurance to people whilst on cruises under our Single Trip and Annual multi-trip policies once more.
Cruise Travel Insurance
What is Cruise insurance?
Cruise cover is a special policy section that you can add onto your regular travel insurance, to get cover for specific risks associated with a cruise holiday – such as missing your ship or being confined to your cabin.
All of our standard policies provide cover for travelling on a Cruise ship, but you will only have the extra cover provided under the optional Cruise cover extension if you choose to purchase this as part of your travel insurance policy.
If you’re venturing across the Mediterranean, taking the trip of a lifetime around Asia or exploring the Caribbean islands on a ship, then traditional travel insurance may not cover you, particularly for cruise specific risks like missing a port stop. By adding Cruise cover to your Allianz Assistance policy, you’ll have cover in case anything goes wrong.
Cruise travel insurance extensions aren't a legal requirement, but some cruise providers do ask you to take out Cruise cover for your holiday, so check your trip booking documents carefully to see whether it’s required for your trip of choice.
Below is some more information about our products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.
What does Cruise Insurance cover?
- Missed port departure : If you miss the ship beacuse of public transport delays or your vehicle breaking down on your way to the port, we’ll pay for transport costs so you can catch it at the next port.
- Cruise interruption : If you fall ill and need to be hospitalised ashore, we’ll pay for the travel expenses so you can re-join the cruise when you’re feeling better.
- Cabin confinement : We’ll pay up to your claim limit if you’re ill and the doctor confines you to your cabin. This also applies if there’s a medical situation on board that means you have to stay in your cabin.
- Cruise itinerary changes : If there’s bad weather or a reason why your ship can’t make a scheduled stop, we’ll pay up to the limit shown on your policy.
- Unused excursions cover : If you can’t make a trip or excursion due to injury, illness or the ship not being able to stop as scheduled, we’ll cover you for the unused cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cruises are a great way to see the world, but they’re different to traditional ‘fly and stop’ holidays. Certain things that happen at sea usually aren’t covered by a standard policy, which is what makes Cruise travel insurance a useful add-on if you’re heading out on the open water.
Cruise travel insurance is specifically designed for those holidaying on a ship. It accounts for unique issues, such as missing the cruise’s departure because your car breaks down on route to the port or being confined to your cabin through illness. It even considers the fact that you’re moving from port to port, rather than staying in one place; the planned itinerary could change, and you may miss a port or not get chance to do an excursion you booked. With standard travel insurance, you wouldn’t be covered for these things. But, if you take out travel insurance with Cruise cover, you’re protected – so you can just enjoy your holiday.
As with any travel insurance policy, the amount of money you pay for your travel insurance with cruise cover will depend on a number of factors, such as your age, whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions and the length of your trip.
The amount you pay will also depend on the level of cover you choose. Our travel insurance with cruise cover comes with two different policy levels: Silver and Gold. Each of these has a different payment limit and excess amount, so you can choose a level of cover to suit you.
To find out how much your Cruise holiday insurance will cost, you can get a quote today. Simply fill in your details and we’ll provide you with a quote for your trip.
Though plenty of cruise holidays go without a hitch, the experience can be far from smooth sailing. You could have a virus outbreak on the ship, your luggage could go missing or you could miss a port because of bad weather. For this reason, specialist Cruise travel insurance can be just as important as your passport.
Although Cruise travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it’s still incredibly important if you want to be covered while you’re at sea. With Cruise holiday insurance you can relax, knowing that you’ve got cover in place.
From 5th May 2021, we will temporarily be unable to offer travel insurance policies to cover people's pre-exiting medical conditions. This is as a result of improvements we are making to our online booking process. Please keep an eye on the Allianz Assistance website in the future so you are aware when we are able to offer this additional cover again. Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren't affected and your cover won't change.
It won't be long before we'll be able to provide you with a quote again for cruise travel insurance with medical conditions included. Once the updates have been made, to purchase travel insurance with medical conditions included, you’ll need to provide us with details of any medical conditions you have. This way, we can make sure you’re properly covered and eligible for travel insurance cover with us
Terms and conditions apply.
How to ensure you have the right cover
Does your bank or credit card company provide cover.
Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.
Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.
Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.
Are you covered by ABTA or ATOL?
If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.
Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

However, we understand you might still like to register your travel plans and for that reason we have kept the option for you to do so on the mobile app.
Steps to register your travel plans for your debit card:
- All you need to do is tap on your account from the main page and go to 'Manage my card'.
- Tap 'Going abroad' then 'Add trip' (iOS devices) or 'Register card' (Android devices) and follow the instructions on screen.
What is my travel insurance policy number?
Your policy number is your sort code followed by your account number.
This is also shown on the Certificate of Insurance that you can download or request by calling us.
Any upgrades you purchase will have their own unique policy ID which is shown in the confirmation email.
What cover does our travel insurance provide for COVID-19?
Your policy provides cover for the following situations related to COVID-19 as long as the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) aren't advising against "all travel" or "all but essential travel" to your destination.
Cutting short a trip due to:
- A change in FCDO advice, as long as you weren’t aware of this advice when you travelled.
- Being unable to stay in pre-booked accommodation due to COVID-19 or another pandemic, as long as you weren’t aware of this when you travelled.
Cancelling a trip due to:
- You or any insured person, close relative or travelling companion being diagnosed with COVID-19 or another pandemic disease.
- Quarantine (as an individual and not broadly as part or all of a population, vessel or geographical area).
- The FCDO advising against 'all' or 'all but essential' travel due to COVID-19 or another pandemic, if not known at the time of booking
- You being refused boarding onto your booked public transport due to displaying symptoms of COVID-19 or another epidemic or pandemic.

You and anyone travelling with you needs the reassurance that you’re protected, no matter what. That includes claims directly or indirectly relating to an existing medical condition.
Let’s debunk a myth - being honest about a medical condition doesn’t always mean you can’t get travel insurance.
It pays to be upfront when you answer this, give Cover-More a call if you’re not sure.
What’s listed?
Many conditions can be automatically included on your activated policy provided you and your condition meet the specified criteria.
Conditions include:
- Coeliac Disease

You’ll instantly know if they’re covered. If approved, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to cover your existing medical condition.
80 or over?
If you’re 80 or over, you must apply for Upgrades cover. Check our Credit Card Insurances Product Disclosure Statement (PDF) or World Debit Mastercard insurances Product Disclosure Statement and Information Booklet (PDF) for more information.

Which purchases count as travel with Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve?
Editor's Note
Thanks to its plethora of premium travel perks, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is well-known in the travel credit card space. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the Sapphire Reserve's mid-tier sibling that features a $95 annual fee — which is also the more affordable card considering the Reserve's annual fee is $550 — and remains a top pick, winning Best Travel Rewards Credit Card for the sixth straight year at the 2023 TPG Awards .
No matter which Sapphire card you have, Chase clearly defines what counts as travel. Both cards generously award for travel booked through Chase Travel℠ and all other travel purchases.
We'll go over the purchases that count (and don't count) toward earning bonus points in this guide.
How many points do the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred cards earn on travel?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve awards 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase Travel and 5 points per dollar on flights booked through Chase Travel.
But suppose you're looking to book directly with the airline, hotel or another company or get awarded for other travel purchases like taxi rides and parking fees. In that case, you'll still earn 3 points per dollar on these purchases.
The Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on all travel purchases booked through Chase Travel and 2 points per dollar on other travel purchases.
You'll also earn a boosted rate of 10 and 5 points per dollar spent on Lyft rides on the Reserve and Preferred, respectively (through March 2025).
'Travel,' according to Chase
The Chase Travel portal allows you to book various types of travel. For "all other travel purchases," here's how Chase defines it:
Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.
Compared to bonus categories from other credit cards, Chase's travel category is extremely generous.
While cards such as the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer bonus points for airfare purchases made directly with the airline (with a spending cap of $500,000 on the Amex Platinum per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar), the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve cards let you earn a bonus on virtually every trip-related charge.
The travel category encompasses a wide variety of purchases, from hotels and airfare (which doesn't have to be booked directly with the airline) to cruises, tolls and even parking fees. Uber and Airbnb purchases count as travel as well.
The following purchases do not apply toward the 2 or 3-points-per-dollar bonus categories on these cards, but most of them shouldn't be a huge surprise or disappointment:
Merchants in this category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages. Some merchants that provide transportation and travel-related services are not included in this category; for example, real estate agents, educational merchants arranging travel, in-flight goods and services, on-board cruise line goods and services, sightseeing activities, excursions, tourist attractions, RV and boat rentals, merchants within hotels and airports, public campgrounds and merchants that rent vehicles for the purpose of hauling. Purchases from gift card merchants or merchants that sell points or miles will not qualify in the travel category.
A few notable travel-related charges that have not been posted as travel for the purposes of bonus points with Chase for TPG staffers in the recent past include an RV rental as well as some vacation rentals via Vrbo and similar services. Whether a vacation home rental automatically codes as travel depends on whether an individual or a conglomerate operates it. In the latter case, that charge may code as "professional services" instead of travel.
If you're ever unsure whether a given purchase counts as travel, it could be worth making a small charge and checking whether it earns any bonus points on your online Chase account.
Additionally, suppose you feel like a travel purchase should have earned bonus points but didn't. In that case, you can always try calling or secure messaging Chase and requesting consideration for that charge to be awarded points as a travel charge. Even if you don't get the outcome you're looking for, you'll at least get some clarity on how certain charges are coded and can plan future spending accordingly.

Bottom line
Cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred have plenty of opportunities to earn 3 or 2 points per dollar spent, respectively, on "other travel purchases." Based on TPG's valuations , that means you could be getting a return of up to 6.15% on these purchases, and you can put your points to use with Chase's airline and hotel partners .
