Being the only hill station in Gujarat, it is located at a height of 1,000 meters and attracts tourists, especially during the summers.  In recent days, it has become a pioneered tourist destination. The tribal community residing here, known as Adivasis, evacuated the area at the request of the government and settled in the nearby Nawanagar, thus making the place an exclusive tourist destination. Saputara is a haven for art and nature lovers alike. Artist Village, a place only a few kilometers from Saputara, is a benevolent place of artwork by various national and international artists. It displays handicrafts and craftsmanship of various artisans in the area around. There are local traditional stores, and stalls selling Bamboo artifacts that work as thoughtful souvenirs. The Hatgadh Fort is an admirable site of historical significance built by Shivaji during his reign. You can find the statue of Lord Shiva resting on the top of this fort which exudes the aura of sanctity For those who are wanderers of wilderness, Saputara has an oasis of exotic wildlife at the Vansda National Park inhabiting carnivores, herbivores, avian fauna and reptiles like python and crocodiles. This acts to the benefit of many, who seek escape from the otherwise imposing heat of the sun. During winter the temperature drops down over here to a very low level due to which people do not resort to visiting this place during winters.

Shilpi Hill Resort, Surat | Luxury Staycation Deal

The birthplace of the father of the nation, Porbandar, is a chief tourist attraction in Gujarat. Besides being the hometown of Mahatma Gandhi, it was also the birthplace of the Hindu religious figure Sudama, who was the best friend of Lord Krishna.  Like the rest of Gujarat, Porbandar experiences a semi arid climate, being the most suitable for travel from October to March.  The early history of the city suggests Harappan settlements over the region, the pieces of evidence of which are still visible throughout. During the British rule in India, the area was a princely state and witnessed the construction of several monuments, all of which act as tourist attractions today.  A visit to Porbandar is incomplete without an exploration of the Kirti Mahal, the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Sayaji Rao, a local ruler, built this memorial in 1936 to commemorate Gandhi's birth. Other places dedicated to Gandhi and his struggle for independence include the Bharat Mandir and the Rana Bapu’s Mahal. If you are looking for a scientific education while on your trip, explore the Tara Mandir planetarium of Porbandar, where you can watch different shows about the solar system and learn about new scientific developments in astrology.  Do not forget to visit the Shri Sudama Ji Mandir and the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram. While the former is a Hindu temple, the Ramakrishna Mission ashram was residence to freedom activist Swami Vivekananda for four months.  Visit the Porbandar bird sanctuary and the Barda Hills wildlife sanctuary for getting closer to nature. Both these places contain vibrant varieties of Indian flora and fauna. You can photograph birds like teals, fowls, flamingos, and ibis and explore the diverse wildlife of the Gujarati forests. One of the best activities organized in the city is the annual Janmashtami mela. This fair is a celebration of local culture and customs. You can enjoy mouthwatering dishes like Thepla and chilla here while also taking thrilling rides on swings. Shopping for beads, jewelry, spices, and handicrafts in the local markets is also sure to resolve your shopping woes.

Siddi saiyad the mosque popularly known as Siddi Saiyad ni Jali is one of the smallest and most famous mosques in Ahmedabad. Located near a busy traffic junction in the northwest of Bhadra Fort, it doesn’t draw attention in the first place.

As you enter the mosque complex, you will notice the exquisite stone windows upfront which is a superb example of delicate carvings that transform yellow sandstone into an intricate lattice. You can describe this masterwork as ‘lace on the stone’. There are four sets of Jalis on the wall and one needs to look up at the back walls of the mosque.

The mosque was built by Siddi Saiyad in 1572-73 AD who was from Yemen and named after Sultan Ahmed Shah. The mosque has been built with minarets and eight arched windows which are adorned by these stone-carved intricate jalis.

There were many step wells built in Gujarat during the Solanki dynasty and the architecture of step wells remained more or less in this style during the Mughal era too. It is said that the dada harir stepwell was built by Lady Bai Harir Sultani during the reign of Muhamad Beguda. She was the household lady of the king and superintendent of the royal harem. Initially, the stepwell was named after her, modified later as ‘Dada Harir’.

Julta Minar -Siddi Bashir Mosque

Julta Minar or popularly known as ‘shacking Minarets’ are full of mystery, which still remains a wonder for engineers. What they cannot unravel is when one minaret is shaken the other begins to vibrate, though the connecting passage between the two remains vibration-free; what causes this vibration is unknown.

Places to visit in ahmedabad

There are two well-known pairs of Shaking Minarets in Ahmedabad – one located opposite the Sarangpur Darwaja and the other near the Kalupur Railway Station Area.

The one near Sarangpur Darwaja is within the vicinity of the Sidi Bashir Mosque, built by Siddi Bashir in the reign of Ahmed Shah. They are three storeys tall with carved balconies where visitors were once allowed to climb all the way up. The other set of minarets near the Railway Station is taller in height but they are now not in good condition. The shaking minarets are classic examples of superb craftsmanship.

Adalaj Stepwell

After venturing into the walled city, head towards Adalaj’s Stepwell which lies to the northwest of the city. The stepwell is located in a small and quiet village – Adalaj near Gandhinagar. It was built to supply water for the area and is considered today one of the most Popular Places in Ahmedabad.

The stepwell is five stories deep both vertically and horizontally. The stepwell is interactively carved with an octagonal opening, built on an intricately carved large number of pillars. If you look at the carvings of pillars, you will need a few hours to admire all the details on them!!

The top floors have more carvings than the lower ones which you will notice as you descend. As one descends towards the well, the temperature starts dropping making one feel cooler than the upper part of the well. Each floor has a large number of rooms that are well-ventilated. The unique part of the stepwell architecture is the fact that the sunlight does not touch the flights of steps or landing.

Places of interest in ahmedabad

There is a circular well at the end of the steps. The well is now fenced off for protection. But one can feel the cold while sitting on the steps just as many travelers would have centuries ago.

Adalaj Stepwell is a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. There are carvings of gods and goddesses on the walls which indicates people of Adalaj and nearby villages visited to offer prayers and to interact with each other under the cool shades of the stepwell.

Looking at such intricate work done centuries ago in 1499 by Queen Rudabai, this place could have been used by many pilgrims and caravans. This beautiful and cool stepwell could have been their resting place for escaping the heat along the trade route.

Wow this is the best compilation of the city I live in! I’ve to admit, I’ve not been to at least 40% of the places mentioned here. I guess I’ve been too busy exploring the world to notice the beautiful architecture of my own city. I should tick it off soon! Lovely article as usual, Mayuri.

Usually we neglect our own city! You should explore it through the eyes of a traveller.

I have only passed through Ahmedabad enroute to Mount Abu. I had no idea it was declared a World Heritage City, such an honour!

Yess, its neglected by many. But I must say one should visit it once.

Nice! amazing city to explore. I’ve not been there before. I will surely plan to visit this place soon. Thanks for sharing this

yeah, Ahmadabad is rich with history.

100’s of years old and still standing. Simply outstanding & fascinating monuments

I’ve never been to India but reading about places like this inspires me to visit. Ahmedabad looks incredible, especially with these ancient buildings. I’d most like to photograph those stepwells; I could spend a long time here!

India is such a fascinating country! So far I’ve only experienced the Indian cuisine, but didn’t have the chance to visit any of these enticing places. Ahmedabad is definitely one of the cities I’m hoping to visit in the future, so I’m really happy to have discovered your guide to the city. So many amazing temples and monuments here!

Awesome post, I enjoy visiting world heritage sites, so India with all beautiful heritage has been on my list for a long time. Your top 10 places to visit in Ahmedabad definitely made me want to visit as soon as we can go back to traveling. Thanks for the detailed descriptions about the history and architecture, I almost don’t need a guide anymore ;). I loved the fun facts about the shaking minarets mystery and about the sunlight in the Adalaj stepwell!

I love the chance to visit UNESCO World Heritage sites like Ahmedabad. There is always so much to see and do. The old forts, walls and gates certainly take me back in time. I continue to be enthralled with the beauty and intricacy of design in the architecture in India. And so much of it done so far back in history. I love that one pillar that is colourfully painted! Definitely lots to see in Ahmedabad.

I have been in Ahmedabad for a short while and been to Sabarmati Ashram, Adlaj step well and also the Akshardham temple. But seems like I have missed such a lot of places. They allow women to enter the mosques I am assuming that from your pictures. Amazing architecture. Love Gujarati cuisine. Hope to get there once more.

I feel awe how beautiful these structures of buildings and its intricate designs. The hardwork on building these is truly a work of art that no money can buy. Thanks for bringing us virtually in your travels.

Ahmedabad is still on my must-see places. However, I was to India 3 times so far. This architecture is like a wander. It is pure art. I would love to see this detailed sculptures and unusual ornaments. Your guide is so complete that I would like to use it during my next trip to India.

Amazing! I would be in heaven visiting Ahmedabad. The Teen Dwaza market looks awesome, a great place to shop and get some unique gifts! I love the carvings and architecture, so detailed. The kite flying ceremony looks like so much fun as well, I would love dressing up and really experiencing the culture of the area.

Ahmedabad has so many architectural wonders with so many stunning architecture but due to lots of commercialization activities here, many of such tourist attractions are neglected. But it is good that bloggers are now bringing them to our notice. Bhadra fort looks magnificent and also the Sidi Sayed ki Jali. Teen Darwaja is iconic monument here. Jain temples here are also worth going for. Thanks for wonderful post with so many architectural wonders of Ahmedabad.

What a beautiful city! I love all the different architectural styles and the intricate stone carvings. Such mastery, especially considering how old this place is. I especially love the tree motive at the first mosque, it’s so pretty and detailed. I can imagine how interesting it must be to walk around this place on the heritage walk and see all the remains of all the different influences and time periods. The Ghandi museum sounds very interesting as well.

I’ve never been to India but I think I should go soon. I love the architecture you show in your post, the carvings on the wall of the Mosque are marvelous. And what about the tree of Life? It attracted my attention at first sight, impressive!

I’ve actually never heard of this spot, so thanks a lot for writing so in-depth about a destination that many folks, including myself, may not know about.

I liked how the mosque look. To be honest, for me being a European, everything looks very unusual. As a travel photographer, I am a bit tired of thing in my country, the look too familiar. I would love to see new, unfamiliar things.

I love that feeling of exploring in depth a city that you’ve only breezed over on a surface level in the past. I wasn’t yet familiar with Ahmedabad but am now intrigued! Love all the ornate architecture and looking back at its rich history and current culture.

I always thought Ahmedabad is an entry/exit point for a Gujrat trip. Didn’t know it has so many places to visit.

A Weekend in Ahmedabad, India – With Tips and Recommendations

A Weekend in Ahmedabad, India – With Tips and Recommendations

The Perfect Weekend Itinerary for Ahmedabad , India

Ahmedabad, the largest city in India’s western state of Gujarat, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Center . The city has more than 600 years of history behind it, which makes it a nice addition to your One Month India Itinerary . It is filled with hundreds of heritage sites and protected monuments. These places can be visited by renting a car in Ahmedabad.

A trip to Ahmedabad is every traveler’s dream. And if you are a history-addict, nothing better!

Sometimes, a weekend may feel too short to explore all of it. But it is surprising how much you can do in 2 days. We were in Ahmedabad for a very short time recently and did more than we had ever expected.

The best part is you can hire an Uber or Ola here or rent a safe sanitized licensed car in Ahmedabad for decent charges and see a lot of the city and beyond. That helps you save both time and energy without having to figure out what buses/trains to take.

Let’s read on to find out all the amazing things that we saw in Ahmedabad. Loaded with culture and heritage , this city guide will definitely give you some serious wanderlust.

Day 1: Explore within Ahmedabad

Sabarmati ashram, sabarmati riverfront, patang kite museum, sidi saiyyed mosque, adalaj stepwell, rani ni vav, patan, share this:.

#Weekends done right in #Ahmedabad #India #TravelItinerary

Ahmedabad played a crucial role in India’s fight for independence. Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi lived in this city for 12 long years and led the famous Salt Satyagraha March from here. Therefore, if you are in Ahmedabad, you cannot miss visiting the Sabarmati Ashram – the peaceful residence of Mahatma Gandhi.

I suggest going to Sabarmati in the morning when the temperatures are low and the ashram has a relaxing vibe to it. You can see the rooms that were lived in by Mahatma Gandhi and his wife, the charkha room, and a beautiful museum that talks about India’s freedom struggle.

Location :  Ashram Road, Ahmedabad

Opening Hours :  8:30 am – 6:30 pm on all days of the year

Entry Fee : Free

Insider Tip : Plan to spend at least an hour here and soak in the peace and tranquility of the place. Just sit down on a bench, listen to the birds chirping, and feel closer to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

Sabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad

Once done at the ashram, take a walk through the courtyard on to the banks of the Sabarmati river. You will be rewarded with an amazing view of the waterfront. Spot some seasonal birds that flock to the place from far away.

You can take a walk along the river promenade and or opt for a boat ride. The promenade is dotted with small gardens, public parks, and shaded plazas. If you wish, you can come back here for a long evening walk too, seat yourself, and watch the world go by.

tourist places near ahmedabad for 2 days

Ahmedabad’s Kite Museum, also called the Patang Museum, is one of a kind. That is why it is also a prime tourist attraction. Designed by Le Corbusier in 1954, the museum showcases a varied collection of kites, including some from Japan, and their building materials.

The museum pays tribute to the age-old but dying tradition of kite flying. It is a great place to be if you have kids with you. And the best part is, it is located at a 15min drive from Sabarmati.

Location : Sankar Kender, Bhagtacharya Road, Ahmedabad

Opening Hours : 10 am – 6 pm with a break between 12 – 4 pm (Closed on Mondays)

Apart from being the base for political developments that shaped the country’s history, Ahmedabad has also been home to many religions. There are umpteen number of temples and mosques. And some of them too beautiful to be mwissed out on.

My personal favorite is the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque with its exquisite Jaali windows. The “jaali” is an intricately-carved piece of stone that looks more like delicate filigree work. Side and rear arches of the mosque are filled with stone jaalis. Sidi Saiyyed’s Jaali has inspired the logo of India’s premier business school, IIM Ahmedabad.

This mosque is a bit out of the regular tourist itinerary but is well-worth a visit if you are an art and history lover.

Location : Bhadra Rd, Opposite Electricity House

Opening Hours : 7 am – 6 pm on all days, Fridays are crowded

tourist places near ahmedabad for 2 days

After finishing your trip to Sidi Saiyyed, you can visit some of the other beautiful mosques in the vicinity such as the Jama Masjid or Rani Sipri’s Masjid. Or take off to see another piece of architectural delight – the stepwell of Adalaj – like we did.

Stepwells have been an integral part of life in arid regions of western India ever since the start of civilization. They have acted not only as water reservoirs but also as religious symbols defining the sanctity of water.

You will find numerous stepwells in Ahmedabad. Among them, Adalaj Ni Vav is one of the most beautifully carved. It is located about 20 kms from the city center. I would suggest getting a private taxi (Uber or Ola are convenient options) to get here.

The architecture is a unique blend of Islamic, Jain, and Hindu styles. You can see Islamic floral patterns, Hindu gods, and Jain symbols adorning each and every level of the stepwell. Look out for the engraved balconies for that perfect Instagram-worthy picture.

Location : Adalaj Road, Adalaj

Opening Hours :   6 am – 6 pm on all days

Insider Tip : Evenings are extremely crowded. Try and visit during the day. It is cool inside the stepwell. So, the heat outside won’t matter much.

On your way back to Ahmedabad, stop at Gordhan Thaal to have the best Gujarati Thali. You will be served close to 20 vegetarian items including starters, main course, desserts, and drinks. The food here is delicious and you can customize the spice levels. It is without a doubt one of the Best Things to do in Ahmedabad.

Day 2: Explore beyond Ahmedabad

After a quick breakfast the next morning, we booked an Ola Outstation Taxi and headed out to visit two ancient but beautiful pieces of architecture a little further away from Ahmedabad. Our first stop was the stunning Modhera Sun Temple which is one of the Most Famous Attraction in Gujarat.

Located at a distance of 100 km from Ahmedabad is this beautiful 11 th century temple dedicated to Hindu Sun God, Surya. It is actually quite surprising to note that the Modhera Sun Temple was built much before the one at Konark, India’s more famous Sun Temple.

The temple is located exactly on the Tropic of Cancer. This ensures that the first rays always touch the main shrine.

Prime attraction of the temple is the opulently carved ceiling of the Sabha Mandapa or assembly hall. Stand beneath the ceiling and stare up to imagine an upturned flower in full bloom. Nothing can get prettier.

The Sun Temple is also the venue for the Modhera Dance Festival that happens in January every year. It is a wonderful experience to watch various Indian dance forms with a brightly lit temple in the backdrop.

Location : Mehsana – Becharaji Road, Modhera

Entry Fee : INR 15 (Indians) INR 200 (Foreign Nationals)

Insider tip : Get a local tour guide. They are available right outside the temple and can entertain you with numerous facts and stories about the temple.

Modhera Ahmedabad theETLRblog

We took around 2-3 hours at the temple and the museum adjacent to it. It was soon lunch time. However, there weren’t many lunch options close by. I would suggest getting on to the highway and finding a restaurant en route to satisfy your hunger pangs.

Carry lots of water with you or buy bottled water from any mom-n-pop store. The scorching heat of Gujarat can be dehydrating.

Our second and final stop for the day was Rani ni Vav or Rani’s stepwell in Patan. Rani’s stepwell was the highlight of my trip not only because it is a UNESCO Heritage Site but also because it is an exquisite showpiece of Maru-Gurjara architectural style .

As soon as we reached here, we could feel the heat piercing through our bodies. And it was only early February.

All we could see was barren land in front of us. We followed the crowd to reach what I thought was an open pit. However, once we got there we saw the most massive stepwell ever built.

Rani ni Vav has seven levels and every level is exquisitely carved. There are more than 1500 sculptures. All along the walls, you can see ornate carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, decorative Torans , and life in general.

The stepwell is believed to be an inverted temple paying homage to Water God. We could feel a drop in the temperature as we descended down the stairs. There weren’t too many people around. The calm and peace inside was almost surreal.

Location : Mohan Nagar Society, Patan

Opening Hours :   8 am – 6 pm on all days

Entry Fee : INR 5 (Indians) INR 100 (Foreign Nationals)

Insider Tip : Go here first thing in the morning for great photographs. The first rays of the sun bathe the sculptures in a golden hue that makes them extremely photogenic.
