Top Travel Baseball Tournaments In America: The Ultimate Guide

While there are plenty of much-beloved sports in the United States, there might not be one that is quite as synonymous with us as good old-fashioned baseball.

And, whether you’re a newcomer to the sport or someone that has been a fan for their entire life.

Top Baseball Tournaments In America [The Ultimate Guide]

Watching this game performed at a professional level is something to behold, and is a surefire way to see if this sport is for you or not.

And with the worst of the pandemic behind us, many major tournaments that were unfortunately postponed finally now have a chance to get underway again.

If you’ve perhaps lost track of some of the events and tournaments going in, then this might be just the guide for you!

We’re going to show you some of the best baseball tournaments in the United States, and when exactly they’re taking place, as well as for all age groups and ranges.

Cooperstown Dreams Park

Starting this list with an amazing Youth Baseball league, Cooperstown Dreams Park is home to one of the most popular youth baseball tournaments in New York state.

With a season that runs for 13 weeks, and with plenty of incredible 12u, this tournament might not always be the top pick when it comes to the highest level of competition.

However, it is a great place to see potential up-and-coming talent, which is why it so often ends up coming in the top recommendations for 12u youth baseball tournaments.

It has even been home to some incredible championship matches too.

This year’s season ran from May through to August, so keep your eyes peeled as the season rolls around next year!

Atlantic Coast Baseball Cap Classic

When it comes to sports tournaments on the East Coast, there’s nothing quite like the Atlantic Coast Baseball Cap Classic tournament.

The tournament wrapped up its 12th annual event this year in Pittsburgh in 2022, with a 5-game guarantee at every tournament, promising top-quality talent at its best from its teams.

Plus, with sites all across the Atlantic coast, from the aforementioned Pittsburgh to Elizabethtown in Kentucky, to Oxford in Mississippi, to Orlando In Florida.

This tournament regularly attracts upwards of 200 teams to take part in this East-Cast extravaganza, with leagues and games covering a massive range of ages and experience levels, from the 9-15-year-old leagues to plenty of adult competition levels to see this sport performed at it its best.

2022’s season took place in June, so keep your eye out for tickets for next year’s event, wherever on the Atlantic Coast it may land for you!

2022 WWBA World Championships

2022 WWBA World Championships

It wouldn’t exactly be a list of the best baseball games in America without at least one mention of a World Series on this list, would it?

This year’s event takes place in Jupiter, Florida, in the Roger Dean Complex, the only stadium in the United States to host 4 minor leagues!

Of course, you’ll only be seeing the finest level of skill in this tournament, with this 24th annual event hosting some of the most prestigious talents in this sport.

So, prestigious that you need an invite to be able to go to this event that runs from the 6th to the 10th of October!

If you’re worried that you’ll miss your chance to go to this kind of event, don’t worry.

This particular tournament may be the first, but it certainly won’t be the last on this handy guide!

National Youth Baseball Championships

If we’re looking at the top 12u baseball tournaments out there, we have to at least give a shoutout to one of the most competitive and highly regarded out there, the NYBC.

This televised tournament gives a little bit of something for the whole family to watch, from the kids watching people their age play at the highest level with their parents, as well as coaches to see some of the up-and-coming talents that are out there right now.

Probably one of the most prestigious events in the North East when it comes to 12u baseball events, this event took place around late July this year.

If you missed it, make sure that you have the rough date penciled in for when it rolls around next year!

USSSA Elite World Series

Told you that we weren’t done with World Series tournaments yet on this list!

Like one of the previous tournaments that we mentioned, the United States Specialty Sports Association Elite series is a 5 game event guarantee for those people that have their tickets ready for this particular event!

With plenty of talent on display from the 8u up through to the 14&u events, this is a great display of talent at work right here!

This year’s event took place in the Space Coast Complex in Viera Florida in early July, so make sure that you’ve got your eye on those tickets when the time rolls around next year!

Perfect Game Coastal Super Regional

For another league that showcases young talent at the highest level, we need to take a look at this series of tournaments that take place in and around North Carolina.

Probably one of the bigger events that take place when it comes to North Carolina youth baseball, this is an event that attracts some of the most ambitious young teams in the sport.

Considering that a team allegedly needs to win a regional NIT tournament in a Super Regional tournament, it certainly sounds like an exclusive club, that’s for sure!

While the event can take place in a range of locations across the North East, the event usually takes place towards the end of May, so have your diaries ready for spring 2023!

2022 PG Fall World Series

2022 PG Fall World Series

Perfect Game is more than a one-shot pony when it comes to series across the country.

This 4th annual tournament is a series of games that take place at, you guessed it, fall, with the first games of this season set to open in the PG National Headquarters in Greater Memphis Tennessee.

Like many of the other tournaments we have covered, this one is an incredible showcase of 12 and under talent across the country’s best, with almost 170 teams set to compete in just the October events alone!

That’s not even counting the two series happening in September or December.

These events take place in states across the country, so make sure you check out venues near you in Sanford, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside the Greater Memphis games.

Super Select Grand Park, Indiana

This tournament is often one that slips under people’s radars when it comes to Youth Baseball leagues and events, and that’s a damn shame!

With many incredible games scheduled for the event when it falls around Spring (it took place in May this year), there is plenty of exciting talent on display here.

And when we say plenty, we MEAN plenty!

Over 200 teams took part in the Super Select in 2021 from teams of 8u up to 14u, this is one to watch out for next year!

Top Gun Summer World Series

Now, if you’re looking for variety when it comes to the experience levels and skills on display in Youth Baseball.

This world series event covers virtually any age range that you can think of when it comes to younger baseball talent. From the 8u, all the way up to high school kids, you can bet that this is the prime location for teens and teams to show off their up-and-coming talent pool.

While the 2022 series has come and passed at this point, the registry for 2023 is well underway for the next season.

This event takes place in locations across Ohio, and around mid-to-late June as well, so keep that timeframe in mind if you’re planning to attend or register for next year’s series!

2023 PG Gulf Coast World Series

Now, time for an event that you can be ready to put on your calendar!

Situated in the South East United States, as the name would suggest, the Gulf Coast World Series is guaranteed to be a packed event for the whole summer.

With games planned for Late May running through June and into the end of July, this is a World Series that you’re not going to want to miss out on!

Plus, with teams ranging from 8u up to 15u, you’ll get a huge range of talent and skill here in this series.

If you’re looking to plan something for late spring and summer for you or your team as a coach, this is the World Series to shoot for!

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it!

While the pandemic may have put a stop to baseball tournaments for a while, 2022 and 2023 are set to make up for this deficit in spades!

The Ultimate Guide to Travel Baseball

A youth baseball team in black and orange uniforms stand together holding a banner in front of them.

Here at Ballparks of America , we love travel baseball. And we’re not alone. Over the last 20 years, youth travel baseball has become increasingly popular. Take the All-American Wood Bat Classic as an example. During the first year of the tournament, in 2000, around a dozen teams signed up to play. In 2014, nearly 100 teams attended the tournament .

Joining a travel baseball team has lots of advantages. Kids can become better ballplayers, make friends, and get to experience travel. However, it’s also a large financial and time commitment. And there’s a lot that goes into joining a team.

To help you understand the world of travel baseball, our team has put together a guide that covers the following topics.

What is travel baseball?

How to join a travel baseball team, how to choose a travel baseball team, how to start your own travel baseball team, what are the benefits of travel baseball, what is the downside of travel baseball, how do travel baseball tournaments work, how much does it cost to play travel baseball, how many games are played in a season, what to expect at travel baseball tryouts.

Also referred to as elite, club, select, and premier, travel baseball is an organized form of baseball characterized by competitive play and—you guessed it—travel. It is often seen as an intermediary step between Little League and high school baseball play. Travel baseball has also increasingly become the standard for elite youth players hoping to continue their baseball career in college or on a professional level. The typical age requirements vary by the organization but can range from 6 to 18 years old.

Unlike Little League, which typically has weekly, local games, travel baseball mostly consists of weekend tournament play. However, there are some leagues that cater specifically to elite baseball teams.

There is no singular governing organization in travel baseball. Rather, there are several organizations and facilities that host tournaments with varying criteria. Some of the dominating travel baseball organizations include Triple Crown Sports , Perfect Game , Untied States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

As we mentioned above, competitive play is a defining characteristic of travel ball. Travel baseball teams do not have open registration, but instead, players are required to try out for a travel team. Therefore, a team could be made up of players from all over the state, region, and—in some cases—the country. Typically only the most competitive teams have players from all over the country.

So you’ve decided travel baseball is something you want to pursue for yourself or your child. Now what? There are two ways to play travel baseball, join a team or start your own team .

There are several ways to find a travel baseball team. Start with a simple Google search, “travel baseball teams near me.” Another good option is to check out the large organizations listed above. You can also look on Facebook for travel baseball teams. Don’t forget to search for the alternative names (select baseball, elite baseball, club baseball, premier baseball, etc). Finally, you can check out FieldLevel . FieldLevel is a website that lets you search over 105,000 travel teams by location, age level, and skill level. Once you find a team you’re interested in joining, you’ll need to try out. Coaches typically hold tryouts in March, around the time local schools have spring break.

Depending on where you live and how far you’re willing to travel, there could be several teams to choose from. When faced with a decision of which team to join, there are several factors to take into consideration.

Cost can vary from team to team, depending on how much and how far the team travels. Be sure that the team you choose fits within your budget.

As coaches will have a large impact on the development of a player, you want to be sure to work with coaches that have the right skills, knowledge, and experience. You also want to make sure the coach won’t play favorites with players. This can especially be a concern if the coach has a child on the team.

Although travel baseball tends to be competitive by nature, there are varying levels of competitiveness within the field. If a player is very serious about their development, they’ll want to be playing with teammates and against teams that are performing at a high level. And the opposite is true as well. If a player is not as serious, they might be frustrated playing on a highly-competitive team.

It doesn’t matter how competitive a team is if a player doesn’t get playing time. Travel ball teams typically have 13 players on them. It’s not advantageous to be the 13th best player on a team, because you won’t get very much (if any) playing time. And playing time is important for development and exposure.

One of the main reasons players sign up for travel ball is to eventually go on to play baseball at college or in the pros. Therefore, you want a team that has a strong development program and practices regularly.

Different teams travel different amounts, and it’s important that the amount fits in with the player’s schedule and the player’s family’s schedule.

If your goal as a player is to play in college or go pro, then it’s important to get adequate exposure. To do this, your team needs to play in the right tournaments where scouts will have the opportunity to see you play.

  • Find a mentor
  • Recruit players
  • Hold tryouts
  • Determine a budget
  • Find a space to play
  • Register your team with the travel baseball organizations

Tougher Competition

Travel baseball allows kids to play with and against the best players in the area, state, or—in some cases—the country. This can drastically improve their game.

Travel Opportunities

Getting to visit locations like Branson, Missouri for a vacation and baseball experience is a one-of-a-kind opportunity. Families can experience a traveling together and enjoying competitive baseball at the same time.

More Exposure

For those hoping to play baseball in college, travel baseball offers more exposure opportunities. Tournaments are a great way to get noticed by a scout or college coach.

Better Player Development

Travel baseball teams often provide better player development than recreational teams. Compared to rec teams, travel coaches tend to be more experienced, better connected, and more serious. Some of the most competitive teams actually employ former professional coaches.

More Playing Opportunities

Select baseball teams play a lot more games a year than an average rec team.

What are the downsides of travel baseball?

Possible injuries.

Some critics have argued that the increase in elbow injuries among major-league players may be caused by youth travel baseball.

Compared to Little League teams, travel baseball is quite a bit more expensive.

Lacks Diversity

Due to the cost, travel baseball tends to exclude players in lower socioeconomic brackets.

Large Time Commitment

When it comes to travel baseball, the time commitment is significant. During the season, be prepared to give up quite a few weekends.

Highly Competitive

The goals of travel baseball are to develop players and win games. Sometimes the focus on winning can overshadow player development. Typically, the best players will get the majority of the playing time.

How do select baseball tournaments work?

Each team chooses how many and which tournaments they will participate in every year. Tournaments are typically held on weekends and can take place all over the country. There are also week-long tournaments held during the summer. Teams choose which tournaments to play in based on a variety of factors—distance, cost, age level, potential exposure, and skill level.

Depending on how well they play, a team can expect to play between three and eight games during a tournament. Tournaments usually start with pool-play, where teams are guaranteed to play a certain number of games. If they do well, they then get to play more games which are single elimination.

According to USA Today , on average travel baseball costs families $3,700 per year. However, some families pay upwards of $8,000 per year. These numbers include fees, equipment , training , and travel.

Traveling to weekend tournaments versus weeklong tournaments, like what Ballparks of America hosts, can also have an effect on costs as well. Food, hotels , gas and more are additional factors when deciding where to go with your travel baseball team.

How many travel baseball games are played in a season?

It can vary, but during the summer seasons, players typically play between 50-60 games.

Although every tryout will progress differently, tryouts typically adhere to the following structure.

To start, either a coach or a team captain will lead you through a warm-up. It’s important to warm up properly so you don’t injure yourself during the tryout.

Next, you’ll most likely be asked to do a 60-yard dash. One of the things coaches are looking for is to see which prospects are athletic and fast. You might be asked to run it more than once.

Then, you’ll have a chance to warm up your arms by playing catch.

The next set of drills will focus on position-specific skills. For example, if you’re an infielder, you might be asked to go to shortstop to ground balls. If you’re a pitcher, you’ll be throwing in the bullpen.

You’ll take turns hitting. You’ll only get a few chances to show off your batting skills, so you want to make this count.

In some cases, tryouts may end after batting practice. However, some tryouts end with a scrimmage.

Tips for travel baseball tryouts

It’s important to make a good first impression. Showing up on time demonstrates that you’re reliable. You also want to make sure you’ve dressed appropriately and have all the necessary equipment. And, right when you get there, go up and introduce yourself to the coach.

Beyond just looking for talented players, coaches are also looking for athletes who can help lead the team. Stand out as a leader by helping organize drills and cheering on your potential teammates.

Whether you’re huddling up with the coach or heading out to your position, put some pep in your step. Coaches like to see that you are taking tryouts seriously and putting in the effort. Try to make sure you’re one of the first players to get where you’re supposed to be.

You might not realize it, but the coaches are watching prospects the entire practice, so don’t slack off. Even when you’re playing catch, you want to be sure to put your best foot forward.

Arm strength is one of the things coaches will be looking for. So, no matter what position you play, when you’re in the specific skills portion of the tryout, make sure to throw the ball hard and fast. If you can, start a training program a few weeks before tryouts.

Arm strength is one of the things coaches will be looking for. So, no matter what position you play, when you’re in the specific skills portion of the tryout, make sure to throw the ball hard and fast.

Don’t try to get too fancy with batting practice. Instead, try hit line drives and keep them in the middle of the field.

It can be tempting to try and play the way you think the coaches want you to play. But don’t. If you do, you won’t be at your best and you’ll end up making silly mistakes. Instead, wait for your moment and seize the opportunity.

Yes, coaches are looking for talented players. But they’re also looking for players with potential who can be coached. Show that you’re coachable for listening to advice and implementing it. And it can’t hurt to ask questions that show you’re open to feedback.

The 2024 Little League World Series is here -- and features some of the best young baseball and softball players in the country.

The Little League Baseball World Series (LLBWS) and the Little League Softball World Series (LLSWS) showcase an extended field of 20 and 12 teams, respectively, for the third year in a row.

A new LLSWS champion was crowned on Sunday, as Pitt County Girls Softball Little League out of Winterville, North Carolina, took home this year's title. The tournament began Aug. 4 in Greenville, North Carolina and had a number of games affected by inclement weather caused by a tropical storm moving up the coast.

Baseball regional tournaments have ended, setting the scene for the LLBWS in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, starting on Aug. 14. The tournament is capped with the United States and International finals on Aug. 24 and the World Series championship game on Aug. 25. This year's MLB Little League Classic will feature the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers facing off at historic Bowman Field in Williamsport on Aug. 18, which you can watch on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" broadcast at 7 p.m. ET.

We have everything you need to know -- from a comprehensive schedule to how to watch all the games to results and highlights as we get underway.

Full coverage of the LLWS can be found here .

Bronson uses big fourth inning to put away Quincy in Branch County Fair 10U softball

Bronson takes 1-0 series lead, could wrap up championship with win on wednesday.

COLDWATER – Organizers of the Branch County Baseball tournament held at the fairgrounds every summer have spent the past two seasons revamping that tournament in an effort to make it bigger, better and more inclusive.

In years past, the tournament was open to 12U baseball teams located in Branch County, however recent changes have opened the fairgrounds to both baseball and softball teams, ranging in age from 10U to 12U, with any teams in the surrounding area invited to compete.

Monday night, the new look tournament kicked off its 2024 slate with games in the 10U age bracket, as both baseball and softball teams met at the Branch County Fairgrounds with the ever-present Ferris wheel looming in the background, creating the perfect backdrop for the 2024 Branch County Fair Baseball/Softball Tournament.

Bronson takes down Quincy in 10U softball, teams will meet again Wednesday

The Bronson 10U Viking softball team defeated Quincy to kick off action on Monday, winning by the score of 9-6.

Quincy led early on with a pair of runs scored in the first inning by Morgan Peters and Harper Warner, with Bronson answering with a single run of their own thanks to Daizee Lepper, closing the score to 2-1.

Bronson took control in the fourth inning with a huge inning, as five straight batters crossed the plate to score, pushing Bronson’s lead to 9-2 entering Quincy’s final at-bat.

Quincy made a valiant comeback attempt, plating four runs in their half of the fourth inning, but it was too little too late as the Vikings went on to take the 9-2 victory.

Caroline White and Kamilla Rosas led the way for the Vikings with two runs scored each, while Brooklyn Case, Lepper, Reese Harrington, Alexus Lewis, Karlynn Rubley, and Eli Syles all plated runs for the Bronson win.

Peters and Warner scored a pair of runs to lead the Quincy effort while Annabella Nieman and Aubree Eyre both added a run.

The Bronson Vikings and the Quincy Orioles will meet again on Wednesday in another day of 10U softball action. With their win on Monday Bronson now has the chance of taking the Branch County Fair 10U softball title with a win. If Quincy comes back and gets a win of their own on Wednesday, the two teams will meet on Friday for the championship.

Shame on the little league world series for allowing travel kids to play in the tournament.

Have a friggin' backbone, Little League International.

As an adult who watched his beloved Hardscrabble Little League be destroyed (before its death, Hardscrabble was the oldest Little League in Ohio) by the travel ball industrial complex, it makes me sick to see Little League get into bed with the travel ball scumbags who refuse to allow their kids to play with the boys who can't catch a baseball.

I hear it over and over from the travel ball scumbags: My kid isn't playing with the nosepickers. We're too elite.

Fine, don't play.

But, it turns out, the travel ball dirtbag parents want it both ways. They want their 32-team shootouts at Cooperstown, and then they want Latham to play on ESPN with a Little League patch on his shoulder.

What did Little League do?

It bent a knee to the Stanley-succin', Hampton Inn lobby bitching and moaning mama bears and their little Lathams because Little League needs to stay afloat and ESPN gives them a bunch of money to put on a product to sell Frosted Flakes to little kids throughout August as those kids are going back to school and begging their parents for Frosted Flakes.

The disgusting mama bears get what they want. Little League loser officials get what they want. ESPN gets what they want. Frosted Flakes' marketing team gets what it wants.

Just remember the bucolic nature of what you're watching this month on ESPN/ABC isn't the reality on the ground. It's not the Little League you grew up with.

- Travel Ball Hardo Chris B. in Houston loved this topic:

I don't think there is any Little League rule against also playing select ball. I think their only rule is that you have to live within your Little League's boundaries.

I think many of the LLWS players also play on select teams... when their schedules permit.  That would mean that they play on select teams in the Fall &/or Winter, when Little League is not being played.  I don't have any idea how rigorous the Little League schedule is, but if there are significant gaps between events during the Little League season the players can presumably get picked up by select teams for tourneys that occur when they don't have Little League games.

Also, I think the Little League coach could essentially enter his whole Little League team into select tournaments to get more reps in-between Little League events.  It doesn't have to be one or the other... if you want to play alot.

Love the Minnesota crew choosing San Leon, TX!  A great spot on Galveston bay.

- Duncan in Georgia writes in about Kirby Smart's son popping up on ESPN playing Little League baseball AFTER a travel ball season:

Kirby son played travel ball for the East Cobb Astros 11U Orange.  His team was in our bracket one weekend but we didn't play them.  I was shocked that he was on a Little League team, guess he was a hired gun.

Screencaps readers enjoy the Pro Football Hall of Fame

- Jeff writes:

Took a boys trip this past weekend.  First to Cincy to see the Cubs POUND the Reds and then on to tOSU & lunch at the best German restaurant in the USofA!  Finally, we got to Canton for the Hall of Fame weekend.

Going for the game and the ceremony were great, but the HoF itself is well worth the trip! Those KC SB Rings are HUGE!!

Seeing a Bears victory was the icing on the cake, even if it was the most inconsequential of pre-season games.  Football is back!  Go Bears!

Also, you thought the new kickoff formation looked weird on TV, wait until you see it in person!

Kinsey:

I'm due for a trip out to the HOF. I'm not going to reveal names, but l can report that Screencaps is read by some inside the HOF and I've been asked to come out for a visit, so that's on the agenda.

The last time I was at the HOF was 2018 when I asked Ray Lewis the question wondering if he'd use T.O.'s allotted HOF speech time since T.O. refused to show up. The Big Js got mad at me, but the question made headlines, so screw them. Losers.

Goodbye Aerosmith

- Chris A. shares:

It looks like the end for Aerosmith, with Steve Tyler's fractured larynx (let THAT sink in) not healing as it should, but ol' Steve is 76, and Father Time is undefeated.

Aerosmith was the first hard rock band that I really loved. I didn't get onboard until 1976, but then I was hooked. I saw them multiple times in concert, including the infamous Cap Centre gig where he dragged a girl around the stage like a mop:  Aerosmith - Live in Largo, MD (January 25, 1980) (REMASTERED AUDIO) (youtube.com) .

This was when they were split up and Jimmy Crespo was in the band replacing Joe Perry. After that show, I thought I had seen the last of Aerosmith. Everyone was high all the time, their albums got worse, and at some point Steven was broke and trying to score crack on the streets in some random town at 3am. And then Steven and Joe got back together, got straight (mostly), made some kick-ass new music, and got rediscovered by a whole new generation of fans. It has been a second act for the ages, and I'm not sure we will see the likes of them again.

They were the greatest American rock and roll band.

Congrats on the success of the 2-club. I'd love to get out there with you guys, but my game is embarrassing at all the wrong times. I'd rather that people think I'm terrible at the game than go out and play and remove all doubt.

I had to look this one up. The only time I saw Aerosmith was at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY on February 26, 1994. I'm still surprised my buddies and I didn't catch heat from our parents for road tripping at that point in our high school careers. I was barely 17. You can do the math.

I don't remember a ton about the concert, but I remember the power steering in the car I was driving blowing out on I-75N on the way home in the middle of the night somewhere between Lexington & Covington, KY where my brother was living.

Easing that car into northern Kentucky is stuck in my mind. According to the archive, Aerosmith closed that show with "Walk This Way."

My ass thought it was about to walk home when that steering went out.

- Indy Daryl provides an update:

I hope you are well on this glorious Saturday evening! As captain of Kinsey’s Folly, I have made sure to keep up my training for the October Bourbon Chase Ragnar. Making sure to lead by example, I embarked on a Coros (watch company) led 12 week speed training program and today I just set a personal best in the 5K!!

It’s not blazing but I was immensely satisfied  with a time of 22:29 (7:24min/mile)!!!! Will adjust to an endurance program for the fall, making sure to include all necessary Ragnar prep.

I need to find out if Daryl has had to kick anyone off the team for lack of work ethic.

Go have a great day.

Ukrainian troops now up to 30km inside Russia, Moscow says

Ukrainian troops have advanced up to 30km inside Russia, in what has become the deepest and most significant incursion since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia's defence ministry said its forces had engaged Ukrainian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez, as the offensive in the Kursk region entered a sixth day.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Kyiv of "intimidating the peaceful population of Russia".

President Volodymyr Zelensky, who directly acknowledged the attack for the first time in an address last night, said 2,000 cross-border attacks had been launched by Russia from Kursk this summer.

"Artillery, mortars, drones. We also record missile strikes, and each such strike deserves a fair response," Mr Zelensky told the country in his nightly address from Kyiv.

A senior Ukrainian official told the AFP news agency that thousands of troops were engaged in the operation, far more than the small incursion initially reported by Russian border guards.

While Ukrainian-backed sabotage groups have launched intermittent cross-border incursions, the Kursk offensive marks the biggest co-ordinated attack on Russian territory by Kyiv's conventional forces.

“We are on the offensive. The aim is to stretch the positions of the enemy, to inflict maximum losses and to destabilise the situation in Russia as they are unable to protect their own border,” the official said.

Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday that its forces had "foiled attempts by enemy mobile groups with armoured vehicles to break through deep into Russian territory".

But in an apparent admission that Kyiv's forces have now advanced deep into the Kursk border region, the defence ministry reported engaging Ukrainian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez - which are about 25km and 30km from the Russia-Ukraine border.

Footage circulating online and verified by the BBC also appeared to show a Russian strike near the village of Levshinka, around 25km from the border.

Ukrainian troops have claimed to have captured a number of settlements in the Kursk region. In Guevo, a village about 3km inside Russia, soldiers filmed themselves removing the Russian flag from an administrative building.

Clips have also emerged of Ukrainian troops seizing administrative buildings in Sverdlikovo and Poroz, while intense fighting has been reported in Sudzha - a town of about 5,000 people.

Ukrainian troops have already filmed themselves outside Sudzha at a major gas facility involved in the transit of natural gas from Russia to the EU via Ukraine, which has continued despite the war.

In Sumy region, which borders the Kursk region, BBC reporters witnessed a steady stream of armoured personnel carriers and tanks moving towards Russia.

The armoured convoys are sporting white triangular insignias, seemingly to distinguish them from hardware used within Ukraine itself. Meanwhile, aerial photos have appeared to show Ukrainian tanks engaged in combat inside Russia.

Photos analysed by BBC Verify also appeared to show Russia constructing new defensive lines near the Kursk nuclear power plant. Ukrainian forces engaged at Obshchy Kolodez were within 50km (31 miles) of the facility.

Contrasting satellite imagery of the same location captured yesterday with imagery from a few days earlier, images show several newly constructed trench lines in the vicinity, with the nearest roughly 8km (5 miles) from the plant.

Russia says 76,000 people have been evacuated from border areas in the Kursk region, where a state of emergency has been declared by local authorities.

Acting regional governor Aleksei Smirnov also said 15 people were injured late on Saturday when the wreckage of a downed Ukrainian missile fell on a multi-storey building in Kursk's regional capital, Kursk.

Oleksiy Goncharenko - a Ukrainian MP - hailed the operation and said it was "taking us much closer to peace than one hundred peace summits".

"When Russia needs to fight back on their own territory, when Russian people are running, when people care, that's the only way to show them stop this war," he told the BBC.

The Kursk offensive comes after weeks of Russian advances in the east, where a succession of villages have been captured by the Kremlin's forces.

Some analysts have suggested that the Kursk attack is part of an effort to force Russia to redeploy forces away from eastern Ukraine and relieve pressure on the beleaguered Ukrainian defences.

But the Ukrainian official told AFP there had been little let-up to date in Russian operations in the east.

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the offensive was a "major provocation".

Meanwhile, emergency services in the Kyiv region said a man and his four-year-old son were killed in a missile strike near the capital overnight.

Air defences also destroyed 53 out of 57 attack drones launched by Russia during its overnight airstrikes, air force officials said. Four North Korean-manufactured missiles were also fired as part of the barrage, they said.

Russia has been forced to turn to the isolated Asian state to re-stock its munitions, with the US alleging that vast amounts of military hardware have been shipped by Pyongyang.

Elsewhere, Russian officials in the occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast said a fire broke out at the region's nuclear power plant on Sunday.

Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-installed governor of Zaporizhzhia, claimed the fire erupted after shelling by Ukrainian forces. He said there had been no radiation spike around the plant.

Russia's state Tass news agency reported that the main fire at the plant was extinguished in the early hours of Monday.

In a statement posted to X, the UN's nuclear watchdog - the International Atomic Energy Agency - said its on-site inspectors had witnessed "strong dark smoke" coming from the north of the facility, but emphasised that there was "no impact reported" for nuclear safety.

President Zelensky said in a post to social media that Russian forces had started a fire on the territory of the plant.

The site has been under the control of Russian troops and officials since 2022. It has not produced power in more than two years and all six reactors have been in cold shutdown since April.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy suggests moves towards banning Orthodox church with Moscow ties

(Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pledged on Saturday to "strengthen our Ukrainian spiritual independence", suggesting that the country's leadership was moving towards effectively banning the branch of the Orthodox Church that has links to Moscow.

A majority of Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians, but the faith is split into one branch with traditional links to the Russian Orthodox church and an independent church, recognised by the world Orthodox hierarchy since 2019.

Membership of the independent church loyal to the Kyiv patriarchate has swelled since Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022. But the minority Moscow-linked church retains influence and Ukrainian leaders accuse it of abetting the invasion and trying to poison public opinion.

"I have just held a meeting -- a preparatory one -- regarding a decision that will strengthen our Ukrainian spiritual independence," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address.

"We must deprive Moscow of the last opportunities to restrict the freedom of Ukrainians. And the decisions for this must be 100% effective. We will ensure that."

Parliament last year gave initial approval to a bill that would have outlawed the activities of religious organisations affiliated with centres of influence "in a state that carries out armed aggression against Ukraine".

But an attempt last month to introduce a draft to secure final approval failed and the legislation remains in abeyance.

The minority church says that after the invasion it cut all its links with the Russian Orthodox Church, an unabashed supporter of the Kremlin's war. Ukrainian leaders dispute that contention.

Criminal proceedings, including treason charges, have been launched against dozens of their clerics. At least one cleric has been sent to Russia as part of a prisoner swap.

Some Ukrainian lawmakers have also expressed fears that the legislation could meet opposition from conservative Republicans in the United States, Ukraine's biggest Western backer, on grounds that it restricts religious freedom.

TWLL 8U All-Stars wrap up strong season on a high note

TAUNTON— Make that two Hockomock champion baseball teams in the City of Taunton

The Taunton West Little League 8U All-Stars (32-3) wrapped up an impressive 2024 campaign on July 28 by winning the 18th Annual SFC Jared C. Monti 8U Baseball Tournament in Raynham. It was their third tournament win of the season, following successes wins in the Taunton West Slugfest and the Dighton Baseball Softball League Battle of the Banner. Taunton West was also crowned Hockomock Summer Baseball League champions, going 9-1 in league play while outscoring opponents 127-12 and recording five shutouts. Overall, the team outscored opponents 374-50.

Taunton West also finished runner up in the Attleboro Youth Baseball Battle in the Boro last month, meaning they never finished lower than a semifinalist in tournament play.

"A 32-3 record and a run differential of 324 runs are beyond what I could have imagined at the start of the season," Taunton West coach Matt Coute said. "This team has been exceptional in every aspect of the game. Each player's focus and skill have led to a combination of high-scoring games and outstanding defense. Watching them grow and succeed as a group has been incredibly rewarding, something all the coaches can all be very proud of."

Taunton West was bolstered by a strong pitching rotation, with Anthony Sena, Kade Doehler, James Gross, Gabe LoDico and Declan Goldrick combining for 11 shutouts and a 2.61 ERA over 172.

"Their ability to maintain composure, execute pitches effectively and throw strikes consistently was exceptional," Coute said. "They’ve not only dominated games but also provided a steady presence that was crucial in our tightest games."

At the plate, four players (Sena, Doehler. Tiago Viera and Bentley Lima) batted over .600 to lead an explosive offense few could contain as the team's three losses came by a combined total of four runs.

"Everyone on our team contributed on a consistent basis," Coute said.

From the TWLL to the CCBL: A Taunton grad is pitching in the Cape League. How he overcame obstacles to get there

Coute thanked his fellow coaches and parents for a fun and rewarding summer, one which will officially close Friday when the team is honored by the New England Knockouts ahead of their game against the Quebec Capitales. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.

"I genuinely hope that we can keep this group together for next season," Coute said. "The chemistry and camaraderie we’ve developed are rare and incredibly special. If we can continue building on what we’ve started, there’s no telling how far this group of kids can go."

The members of the 2024 Taunton West Little League 8U All-Stars were Jaxson Coute, Doehler, LoDico, Calvin Miranda, Leo Barnes, Sawyer Samways, Goldrick, George Thurston, Lima, Gross, Sena and Vieira. They were coached by Matt Coute and assistants Paul Vieira, Aaron Thurston, Ray Gross and Peter Sena.

The boys play locally for the NoCo BlackSox Baseball Club, a 5-year-old independent organization, and they competed on four different teams from 10-and-under to 14-and-under age groups at the tournament. It was held July 30 to Aug. 4 at Frank White Complex in Kansas City.

The United States Specialty Sports Association All-State National Tournament started in 2022 and is for athletes from 8 and under to 14 and under to play against athletes from other states. Coaches of eligible teams nominate players for the tournament and the teams are selected by USSSA.

The BlackSox players who competed at the tournament were: Obie Molina, Clayton Lee, Elisha Hensley, Rowan Benton, Joah Hensley, Silas Hensley, Scott Taylor and Lorenzo Preciado.

All of the BlackSox players’ teams at the tournament ended up in the consolation bracket. Molina and Lee’s 11u team finished third after winning the consolation bracket.

NoCo Black Sox coach Josiah Hensley, father of Elisha, Joah and Silas, coached a couple teams at the tournament. All teams entered in the tournament played at least five games, Josiah Hensley said.

“It’s a great experience for kids to see talent from across the nation,” Hensley. “They get to compete with kids and see how they stack up.”
