YouTube channel TeaserPlay has released a new video that imagines a hypothetical gameplay feature for Grand Theft Auto 6 that would allow players to switch between different time periods. With Grand Theft Auto 5 , Rockstar Games let fans experience the lives of three different characters at once. To accomplish this, Rockstar innovated a feature that let players switch between protagonists Franklin, Michael, and Trevor on the fly. It was a well-received feature, with many fans hoping to see it return in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 .

Very little official information on Grand Theft Auto 6 is available at the time of this writing beyond that the game is in development. However, reputable insiders have said that Grand Theft Auto 6 will have at least two protagonists , and they may even be a brother and sister duo. This has lead fans to assume that the character-switching feature from Grand Theft Auto 5 will be making a comeback in GTA 6 , but again, nothing official to that effect has been announced at the time of this writing.

While Grand Theft Auto fans wait for more information about GTA 6 , they can check out the latest Unreal Engine 5 concept video from TeaserPlay. This video imagines what Grand Theft Auto 6 would look like if it built using Unreal Engine 5 , focusing mainly on the character-switching mechanic. A character-switching wheel is brought up that shows options for three different characters, including one that looks suspiciously like Die Hard 's John McClane. After switching to a different character, the video shows a time wheel that lets players jump between decades.

The two options available in the video are present-day and 1980. Upon selecting the 1980 option, the video then transports the character to a version of Vice City as it existed in 1986. It's an interesting concept to say the least, and it would be interesting to see it implemented in Grand Theft Auto 6 . However, it must be stressed again that Rockstar Games has not confirmed any gameplay details about Grand Theft Auto 6 at the time of this writing, let alone a time travel mechanic.

There have been rumors that the Grand Theft Auto 6 story will span decades , and so this is primarily what this feature is based on. If Grand Theft Auto 6 's story does really take place both in the 80s and modern day, it could be interesting to let players jump between the two time periods. On the other hand, that sounds like it would create serious headaches for Rockstar from a storytelling perspective, and beyond that, it would effectively mean building two different versions of the same map.

Grand Theft Auto 6 's rumored release date is some time in 2024, though some think that a reveal could be happening in the relatively near future. Fans shouldn't hold their breath, but every day brings us closer to the big reveal.

GTA 6 'time travel' concept shows character jumping through time

A stunning concept for GTA VI gives the characters the ability to travel through time, it has serious Assassin’s Creed vibes.

We’re none the wiser as to where Grand Theft Auto VI currently is in terms of its development. It’s believed it’ll be released sometime in 2025 , so to hazard a guess, it’s likely nowhere near a finished product yet.

That being said in terms of gameplay, it’ll likely be Grand Theft Auto V but with a few more bells and whistles thanks to it exclusively launching on the new-gen platforms, the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 .

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with their own fun ideas for what could be in the game, with one concept allowing the player to travel between the past and present Vice City.

In a concept video shared by TeaserPlay, an Unreal Engine 5 demo shows the player’s character walking through the streets of Vice City, before switching to a character who lived in the city during the ‘80s.

The streets, buildings, cars and fashion all shift to that of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City , complete with the colourful neon aesthetic the past title is best known for, and what many believe will inspire GTA VI , especially its logo.

Fans were pretty into the idea, though many believed the game mechanic would be more at home with the Ubisoft franchise Assassin’s Creed rather than Grand Theft Auto.

“This feels somewhat more like a Ubisoft game, but nevertheless, this looks amazing. I really like the idea of featuring both 80s and modern in one setting.”

“This looks great The concept alone is that if your actions in the past had consequences in the future if done right this could lead to so much replayability.”

“I actually really like the concept of being able to pick timeline like playing in modern vs old times.”

In all likelihood, Rockstar Games won’t be adding time travel to their future games, though that isn’t to say there won’t be plenty of references to past characters and events.

GTA’s popularity is no secret, the last entry in the franchise was Rockstar’s most successful product, and a sequel has long been overdue. GTA 6 is currently under development, and many rumors have pointed to a release in the next few years.

Despite the anticipation, not much is known about the upcoming game. A previous rumor claimed that Rockstar would focus on multiple periods for GTA 6 . While this is not confirmed, an Unreal Engine 5 video has showcased an interesting demo based on this concept.

The video comes from TeaserPlay , a Youtube channel that has become synonymous with high-quality Unreal Engine 5 concepts. TeaserPlay’s latest work shows a time travel concept for GTA 6 .

Similar to past demos from the channel, this video looks spectacular. The environments look incredibly detailed, with impressive shadows and character models . Fan-made Unreal Engine 5 demos have showcased the engine’s potential, and this new demo only adds to the growing catalog.

Furthermore, Teaserplay has made various Unreal Engine 5 demos in the past. Concepts like God of War Remake and Far Cry 7 have been awe-inspiring.

GTA 6 is also reportedly aiming for photorealism . The above concept shows a glimpse of what GTA 6 could look like. The team could make a game that rivals or surpasses the Unreal Engine 5 demo with Rockstar’s talent.

However, the highlight of the demo is the time-traveling concept. Teaserplay’s demo shows seamless transitioning between characters , similar to GTA 5. But, the demo goes one step further and includes similar transitions for the periods .

As the time period changes, a completely different atmosphere can be seen. Different cars and older architectures go a long way in making a believable rendition of the 1980s. 

If appropriately implemented, this could prove to be a revolutionary mechanic. Rockstar could provide an immersive experience, effectively packing two different games between the multiple settings in one release. 

Rockstar has now bid farewell to GTA 5 & Red Dead Redemption 2 . While development has been well underway for some time, Rockstar is now wholly focused on GTA 6.

GTA 6 currently has no confirmed release date. Multiple reputed sources have leaked the game details, but the validity of these rumors remains questionable.

GTA 6 Leaks Reveal Game May Have Time Travel

A leak through time.

Speculation and rumours surround the anticipated announcement of Rockstar’s GTA 6 .

Grand T heft Auto (GTA) 6 rumours and supposed leaks have been floating around more as Christmas 2021 closes in. Many fans are expecting to hear an announcement soon as Grand Theft Auto V launched all the way back on September 17, 2013. The game just celebrated its eight-year anniversary, but it may be time for Rockstar to announce their newest sequel very soon. The latest leak from an insider at French publication R* Mag , mentions how GTA 6 will “take place in 2 time periods.” This either means that the campaign and map environment will take place in two different time periods or there may be a time travel feature, perhaps?

Rumours point to the idea that GTA 6 may take place during the modern-day Vice City and the 1980s Vice City that was featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City . Other leaks from Instagram already talked about how the game will take place in Miami, so assuming this could mean the game can likely take place in Vice City.

The same source also talked about hurricanes, gators and a map bigger three times bigger than GTA 5. The gators make sense if the setting is in Miami, Florida. The hurricanes might be something that hints the map will be constantly changing like in Fortnite or Sea of Thieves . The leaks and claims do mention that the GTA 6 map will “change overtime with updates from Rockstar.” As for the size of the map, perhaps this is where the two time periods of the same city could be true, allowing players to drive through both versions of the map with distinct differences.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City came out on October 27, 2002, so having GTA 6 be released on the same date in 2022—to commemorate a 20-year celebration—might be the plan from Rockstar. When the former Rockstar Games co-founder , Dan Houser, departed in 2020, there were reports that the launch of GTA 6 was pushed back. Although, the same Instagram source that found out about the map environment above, confirms there will be announcement and teaser beginning in November through December this year. November has just begun, so perhaps Rockstar will inevitably release some official information soon.

What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out?

Rockstar’s biggest challenge is following the success of its enduring online mode

Grand Theft Auto 6 ’s first trailer gives fans of the open-world crime franchise a peek at the first new GTA in more than a decade. As impressive as GTA 6 looks, it comes with immense expectations. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5 , is one of the biggest games of all time; Rockstar has sold more than 190 million copies of the game across three console generations, and following that massive success won’t be an easy task.

But Rockstar has another monumental challenge as GTA 6 creeps closer: delivering a successor, or companion, to Grand Theft Auto Online , the hugely successful multiplayer component built on GTA 5 . Since launching in 2013, GTA Online is regularly played by millions of players — players who have invested hundreds of millions of hours (and dollars) in the game.

With GTA 6 slated for 2025, Rockstar has a difficult needle to thread. It has millions of loyal fans who will continue to play GTA Online for years to come, plus a new game to support, hopefully with the same longevity and vitality of GTA 5 . It also has a new location, a modern-day Vice City (and locations beyond), and a decade’s worth of technological advancements to capitalize on for a potential online expansion for GTA 6 .

• GTA 6 won’t launch on PC, but GTA 5 didn’t either

Rockstar can’t simply move its entire GTA Online player base and tech to a new town and a new game and ask everyone to start over. Other developers have tried, and stumbled, to transition their loyal communities from one successful game to a follow-up. Companies are often left competing with themselves, as with the recently launched Payday 3 , which is struggling to match the player numbers of the decade-old, hugely popular Payday 2 . Developers Valve and Blizzard took a separate approach to sequelizing two of their popular games, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Overwatch , effectively replacing them with Counter-Strike 2 and Overwatch 2 but to mixed results. Rockstar wound up competing with itself with the launch of Red Dead Online in 2018, with GTA Online being the clear victor. (Last year, the studio announced it was effectively winding down development of RDO to put resources toward GTA 6 .)

Rockstar doesn’t have the luxury of replacing Grand Theft Auto Online with a straight sequel. It would leave too many players behind. But the gamemaker might try to attempt something different altogether. The developer’s purchase of GTA role-playing mod maker Cfx.re , the team that makes FiveM and RedM, could signal its approach to building out the online side of GTA 6 . Those mods allow players to take on just about any role in the worlds of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead , letting them not just become the masters of criminal organizations and famous outlaws, but taxi drivers, gang members, and horse ranchers.

Rockstar may also take a more subscription-based approach; its GTA Plus subscription , launched in 2022, appears to have been quite successful at bringing in consistent month-to-month revenue for the company.

What exactly Rockstar plans to do with GTA Online and multiplayer integration for GTA 6 is almost completely opaque right now. Rockstar’s debut trailer for 6 focuses largely on the main characters and setting of its next Grand Theft Auto game, and the company is famously a black box of pre-release information. (Polygon reached out to Rockstar for comment on the future of GTA Online and will update when the company responds.) Even Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hasn’t said anything substantive about the future of Grand Theft Auto Online , only remarking on the outstanding recurring revenue brought in by Rockstar and acknowledging the daunting task of following GTA 5 and GTA Online .

“I think that’s a challenge that the folks at Rockstar face every time there’s a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto,” Zelnick said on a podcast appearance earlier this year. “It needs to be something you’ve never seen before on one hand, and it needs to reflect the feeling that we have about Grand Theft Auto, and that’s a big challenge for the team.”
