10 Best Rhine River Cruises
Sail past stunning castles, quaint towns, and vineyards on these Rhine River cruises.
Courtesy of Riverside Luxury Cruises
River cruising has grown in popularity in recent years, with new lines offering unique ways to experience Europe’s most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Douro, Seine, and, of course, the Rhine. “The Rhine River is famous for castles, cathedrals, historic sites, and medieval towns, offering majestic scenery as you travel through several European countries. You feel as if you’ve traveled back to a different time in our world,” Travel + Leisure A-list advisor Olga Placeres says.
On most Rhine River cruises, guests can explore on their terms, making this a great trip idea for multi-generational travel. From family-friendly trips to beer-focused itineraries to festive holiday cruises, here are 10 of the best Rhine River cruises for every type of traveler.
AmaWaterways

7-night Enchanting Rhine Cruise
Cruise expert Placeres named AmaWaterways one of her favorite river cruise lines. This family-owned and operated line offers all-inclusive river cruises with a range of shore excursions for both active and relaxed travelers. Several Rhine River cruises are available, and a few include the Moselle and Main Rivers. Christmas market cruises and wine-focused itineraries are also offered.
The Enchanting Rhine cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland, where passengers board their vessel (while the specific ship varies depending on the dates, all carry fewer than 170 guests). In Breisach, Germany, guests can choose a wine country bike tour, walking tour, or hike in the Black Forest. The cruise continues to Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Rüdesheim, with options each day for active or relaxed excursions. The scenic Rhine River Gorge area is a highlight, and there are visits to Cologne and Düsseldorf before arriving in Amsterdam.
Viking River Cruises
Courtesy of Viking River Cruises
11-day Rhine and Main Explorer Cruise
Placeres also recommends Viking Cruises, which was established by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and operates river, ocean, and expedition cruises across all seven continents. Viking’s Rhine River cruises range from eight to 15 days, and itineraries go beyond the Rhine to include the Main, Moselle, and a voyage that goes across the North Sea to Norway’s fjords.
The Rhine and Main Explorer begins in Nuremberg and continues to Bamberg for a walking tour through the winding streets of the medieval city. Cruise highlights include palace tours in Würzburg, local Bavarian culture and food in Marktheidenfeld, scenic sailing on the Main River, touring the charming French city of Strasbourg, and admiring Germany's famous Black Forest. The tour ends with two nights in Basel, where you can take a tour of the city and enjoy cheese fondue.
Adventures by Disney
8-day rhine river cruise.
Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, but they also offer adults-only (18+) experiences on Europe’s rivers. Instead of setting sail on a Disney Cruise Line mega ship, these itineraries use AmaWaterways river ships for a more intimate experience with a maximum of 156 guests. Travel writer Terry Ward took her six and seven year olds and her 18-year-old niece on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise in July. “I can confirm it’s a trip with total multigenerational appeal,” Ward says. “There were always multiple options for shore excursions — something to interest passengers across the board.”
“During a port of call in Germany’s Black Forest region, for example, we could choose a toboggan run through the forest with time spent carving wooden toys and learning to make butter, visiting Europa Park, or enjoying the medieval old town of Riquewihr.” Ward tells T+L, “On several nights, Disney’s Adventure Guides whisked the kids off to the lounge for their own fun — maybe a Disney movie and dinner or games — so the adults could try the chef’s tasting table or enjoy a quieter dinner. Teens had their own tables for dinner if they wished.” Ward added, “The Adventure Guides hailed from some of the countries we sailed through, so traveling with them in Europe felt a bit like being along for the ride with an in-the-know friend.”
Avalon Waterways

8-day Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts Cruise
After nearly a century in European tourism, the Globus family of brands launched Avalon Waterways in 2004, and it was ranked among the top river cruise lines in the world by T+L readers in 2024. Avalon’s Rhine River cruises range from five days to 11 days; several include the Moselle, and they offer seasonal Christmas market cruises.
The Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts cruise is a round-trip cruise from Amsterdam offered in the spring, with a beer expert on board to host lectures, beer tastings, and food and beer pairings. The ship heads to Rotterdam for a walking tour, bike ride, or a guided excursion to Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe” with over seven million tulips. In Antwerp and Ghent, guests can choose between bike or walking tours, while guided tours in Willemstad take guests among centuries-old buildings. In Amsterdam, guests can take a guided canal cruise followed by a Dutch beer experience.
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

The eight-day Rhine River Valley cruise boards in Nuremberg and cruises to Bamberg where guests can choose a walking tour, nature park hike, or brewery tour. In Würzburg, an 18th-century palace tour or wine tasting are options; additional stops include Miltenberg, Mainz, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, and Breisach, before disembarking in Basel.
8-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure Cruise
This century-old, family-owned company offers travel experiences in more than 100 destinations, ranging from small-group tours to river cruises. Tauck’s Rhine River cruise itineraries range from eight days to the 15-day Grand European Cruise that covers nine countries along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.
The eight-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure is a Tauck Bridges family cruise designed for guests of all ages. The cruise departs from Basel, and the next day, guests travel by rail to Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne to ride the world’s steepest cog-wheel train. In Strasbourg, there’s a French sing along and chocolate tasting. The family-focused fun continues at stops in Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, and Cologne before the ship reaches its final stop. In Amsterdam, guests can take a canal cruise, visit a windmill, or taste local cheeses.

8-day Rhine Christmas Markets Cruise
This Australian-founded company established in 1986 offers river cruises, ocean voyages, and expeditions to the polar regions. Billed as an ultra-luxury, five-star cruise line, Scenic offers special Rhine River itineraries that feature Christmas markets or focus on topics like wine and food.
The Rhine Christmas Markets cruise begins in Amsterdam with options of a walking, biking, or canal tour before setting off for Cologne, where guests can see the magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, visit a brewery, and browse the Christmas markets. In Baden-Baden, a famed German spa town, browse the markets or soak in thermal waters. Koblenz, Mannheim, and Strasbourg are additional stops on this holiday-themed itinerary.
Emerald Cruises

8-day Jewels of the Rhine Cruise
Emerald, founded in 2013, specializes in luxury river and yacht cruises. Emerald's Rhine River cruises include an eight-day voyage and an 11-day cruise that includes the Moselle.
The Jewels of the Rhine cruise starts with two nights in Amsterdam, where guests can take a bicycle tour or canal cruise before the captain’s dinner. Then, it's off to Cologne and the charming cities of Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Freiburg, where castles, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings await. The ship arrives in Basel for the end of the cruise the next day.

Founded in 1976 in France, CroisiEurope is the largest European-based river cruise line. The company also offers sea voyages and canal barge cruises. Their budget-friendly river cruises include some shore excursions, and Rhine River cruises vary in length from three days to two weeks or longer.
The five-day Rhine in Flames cruise boards in Strasbourg for a night of cruising. The next day in Rüdesheim, excursion options include a train ride to a wine cellar followed by a visit to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments or a gondola lift to the Niederwalddenkmal and vineyard hike. The next day is the main event as the ship sails towards Trechtingshausen for the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks show. The ship arrives in Mannheim for an optional visit to Heidelberg and later a gala evening before sailing back towards Strasbourg.
A-Rosa Cruises

6-day Rhine Legends Cruise
This German company has been cruising the Rhine River and its tributaries since 2009. The family-friendly line has a kids club and family suites with plenty of room to spread out. Their river cruises range from four to seven days, and there is a fee for most excursions.
The five-day Rhine Legends cruises the Middle Rhine round-trip from Cologne. In Rüdesheim, guests can tour the countryside on a bike or train tour. Stops in Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, and Koblenz provide more ways to explore the beautiful region, before the ship returns to Cologne for disembarkation.

Recently returned from the great....
Recently returned from the great Indian rail journey. My wife and I could hardly believe the value for money. From pick ups from Durham to Heathrow and back,to the number of coach and train journeys , quality hotels, great choice of food throughout and our first night in Heathrow Hilton. What really made our trip a success was our guide, Prashant, who managed a party of twenty four very varied, sometimes a little unpredictable travellers with ease.Nothing was too much trouble for him and as a group we gelled and warmed to Prashant as he kept us safe, well informed and a little entertained by his mix of authority and humanity.Where do I begin with the tour itself ? India,a country of extremes.Poverty,wealth,order,chaos.Sometimes bleak, often breathtakingly beautiful. The people, the cities, art, architecture, flaura and fauna.Delhi,Jaipur, Amritsar,Agra, Ranthambore, Chandigarh and the icing on the cake that is Shimla. An absolute masterclass of man versus nature, the railway and buildings are an unbelievable feat, but wait until you see the dual carriageway being built on the mountainside.🤯I could go on for a very long time but I'll just post some photos. Thanks to Titan, thanks to the excellent Prashant and and a massive thanks to the other twenty two travellers who helped shape our holiday of a lifetime.🏁💜

Danube cruise was great value. Well organised. Clear instructions from Titan prior to travel. Door to door service great.
Exceptional trip and service by Titan
Just returned from a fabulous tour of California & the golden west. It’s a full on tour with early starts but you see so much varied landscape from the ocean to the desert to Yosemite. My 2nd tour with Titan & my first solo tour. Thoroughly enjoyed it & met some great people. Grand Canyon was amazing would definitely recommend
Not merely a holiday, rather a memorable experience
I have used other travel operators; this was the 1st time of touring with Titan----Israel, The Holy Land, from being collected from home and returned at the end of the holiday this was an unforgettable experience; the Tour Manager, a PhD Archaeology made the whole tour so interesting, he enlightened us throughout each day from an historical, archeological and Biblical viewpoint, bringing each site we visited come to life, and went over and above his remit escorting us for evening trips around the local area; thanks also to our very patient driver who coped with the very busy traffic; our hotels were good, professional and pleasant staff and really good food; I would recommend Titan to anyone looking for a fascinating tour with excellent efficient service thank you Titan nor just for a holiday for a memorable experience
We had a 2 weeks...
We had a 2 weeks fantastic holiday arranged by Titan to Vietnam and Cambodia. Excellent, well organised Throughly enjoyed. Very good service by Vietnam Airlines, if you could afford book it in premium economy. We had a door to door service , picked up to airport from home and then dropped at home from airport, very convinient. Particular credit goes to our guide THI who is a caring, knolegeable, friendly down to earth man who made our trip a memorable one. I will not hesitate to book another holiday through Titan, their staff are friendly and helpful
We had a fantastic holiday...
We had a fantastic holiday in Mississippi. Right from our chauffeur driven car picking us up to the return journey, we had a great time. The first hotel The Gaylord was amazing, absolutely huge, first class. The second The Double tree in Memphis unfortunately wasn't, the hotel was tired and very basic, the only plus was where it is situated in the centre of town, we were only there two nights so it wasn't to bad. The American Queen Steam Boat was first class all the way, thoroughly enjoyed the seven nights sailing down the Mississippi. The last hotel the Sheraton New Orleans was very comfortable too. Our guide throughout our time away was Laura Tuttle. she was amazing, very knowledgeable, and helpful. We also had a coach driver Guil, who went over and beyond to give you the best time. Other coach guides included Jim,who was so funny, and also very knowledgeably. Very entertaining throughout. The entire itinerary itinerary was very well thought out, included a huge variety of visits to different Interesting locations. Highly recommend using Titan for all your holiday destinations.
Wonderful travel company I booked my...
Wonderful travel company I booked my first tour to lndia and was wonderfully taken care of Highly recommended, especially tour guide Janice
THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!!...
THE GREAT INDIAN RAIL JOURNEY!!!! (Dreadful) Avoid Titan and Saga at all costs. False descriptions of the tour and dreadful administration Returned to the UK last evening with a great sigh of relief after the worst holiday ever. 1. No block booking of airplane seats by Titan. (Husband and I sat apart on the long, overnight flight) 2. Unable to pre-book seats as Titan reference numbers did not coincide with anything. 3. Husband and I not sat together on any of the train journeys! In fact, on one occasion I was sat, alone on a sleeper carriage, a couple of carriages away from the rest of the group who were scattered over two or three carriages. Terrifying as a female to be sat alone in the midst of noisy locals!!!!! (Eventually the guide, Rahi, did come to rescue me and found a seat near the main group) 4. The guide, Rahi, would usually get off the coach and begin walking off without waiting for all the group to disembark the coach. (Spot the guide in the crowd!) 5. The guide, Rahi, refused to use any identifying prop such as a flag, hat, jacket or umbrella. Frightening to be in the manic crowds of Delhi and other crowded places to be unable to see the guide. 6. NO AUDIO HEADSET system on any excursion 7. The guide, Rahi, didn’t face the whole group, but stood sideways on and was unable to be heard by the majority. 8. OUTRAGEOUS behaviour by the guide when he enquired as to the whereabouts of my husband, whom I explained was in bed with an upset stomach and was feeling unwell. Rahi DID A REVERSE AIR PUNCH😳😳. This was in response to an earlier conversation when my husband had complained about our separate seating arrangements. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL 9. When we arrived at Heathrow to find our aircraft seats were not allocated, we were advised to speak to our guide on arrival at Delhi. Rahi merely shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything. 10. Tour pace incorrect - gruelling pace and only half a day relaxation due to the guide, Rahi, throwing in visits to shops and factories fie him to earn his commission as I head him tell another!!!!!!! 11. When off loaded the return flight due to illness, we were unable to get in contact with Titan/Saga. Left in Delhi without an hotel or flight!!! Found accommodation but didn’t remove shoes or clothes due to the poor standard. Final summary: Poor, disappointing, inefficient, incompetent, misleading, misrepresentations, are just a few words to describe.
Luxury VIP door to door...
Luxury VIP door to door travel! I don't think so....Titan sent a Toyota Prius uber to Stanstead for a return journey to Newport, S Wales. 4 adults plus luggage! the experience was anything but luxurious. Contacted Titan on the return journey and since return. They simply didn't seem interested and offered us a £300 travel discount off a future trip! After a lot of emails they converted it to a £300 cash refund. Give it a lot of thought before booking !

Rhine River Cruises
Tauck's Rhine River cruises follow this romantic river on its winding journey through medieval towns, cathedrals, castles, and museums, with enchanting river landscapes along the way.
- ITINERARIES
- FEATURED TOURS
Welcome to the Rhine River
Flowing through six countries, the Rhine River cuts deeply through mountains, meandering between hillside castles and age-old winelands. This is Germany's landscape at its most dramatic, with spectacular views of forested hillsides alternating with craggy cliffs... idyllic villages appearing around each bend... and half-timbered houses and Gothic churches that appear as if plucked from a fairy tale world.
Heidelberg, germany, history's all around you in heidelberg.
In Heidelberg – Germany's oldest university town – narrow cobblestoned lanes, shops and pubs housed in 17th-century structures in the Altstadt are kept lively by the cadence of 21st-century student life. On the hillside above the city, visit the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle, celebrated in writing by many, including the German poet Goethe and American writer Mark Twain, who both spent time here. Twain wrote about the striking red sandstone ruins of Schloss Heidelberg in "A Tramp Abroad"; they were a magnificent residence for Bavarian royalty from the 13th to 18th centuries. The castle is an imposing ensemble of buildings, from different architectural periods, surrounding a central courtyard; from its terrace and gardens, the sweeping views impress along with the feel of more than 600 years of history.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Canals and more in amazing amsterdam.
Amsterdam is often called the "Venice of the North" because of its elaborate network of canals winding through a romantic historic center of cobbled streets and Dutch Renaissance architecture. A canal boat cruise reveals The Netherlands's historic capital from the inside (often with a slice of Dutch apple pie), as you glide along 17th-century waterways lined with trees, gabled merchant houses and vibrant urban life. During your visit to Amsterdam, Tauck also includes a tour of the Rijksmuseum, one of the world's most respected art museums, home to masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age including Rembrandt's "Night Watch."
Köln, Germany
Exploring köln (cologne) on the river rhine.
One of Germany's oldest cities (founded in the 1st century AD), Köln (Cologne) was once a Roman provincial capital, and later a wealthy medieval trading port; the city was almost totally destroyed during World War II, but many of its architectural treasures have been restored – including the towering Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), a twin-spired masterpiece of High Gothic architecture that is the centerpiece of the city. Inspired by the Destination
For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

EMBARK IN COLOGNE
Board the cruise ship moored in the heart of picturesque Cologne. The dedicated English-speaking crew will welcome you aboard your first-class floating hotel, ensuring you settle into your luxurious, well-equipped cabin and familiarise yourself with the ship.
As you wake to a sumptuous breakfast, the delights of this river cruise begin to emerge as we drift past the first rolling hills of the Rhine Valley. The forested Siebengebirge – Seven Mountains – a cluster of ancient volcanic hills that inspired many of the Brothers Grimm’s legends, including ‘Snow White’, act as the overture for even more dramatic scenery upstream. We cruise past the famous ruined bridge at Remagen, which was captured intact by the Allies towards the end of the Second World War, allowing thousands of troops to cross into Germany’s heartland. Pretty waterfront towns and carefully tended vineyards come into view as we glide gently into our mooring to visit delightful Koblenz for a guided tour.
Founded by the Romans, this historic city is beautifully located at the confluence of the Rhine and its sister river the Moselle. Discover Koblenz’s maze of medieval buildings in the Altstadt – old town – which is studded with a fine array of traditional shops and classic Rhineland cafés. As you wander, historic buildings appear seemingly at every turn; see a former mint, the Four Towers – 17th-century houses with striking turrets set at a crossroads – and many fascinating squares and churches, including the 9th-century Basilica of Saint Kastor.
Wherever you wander you’re never far from a riverbank, and it’s worth crossing the 14th-century stone Balduin Bridge across the Moselle for fine views back across the spires of the Altstadt. Tonight, enjoy a meticulously prepared dinner on board, and afterwards perhaps a quiet stroll along the riverside promenade to the Deutsches Eck – ‘German Corner’ – where the great rivers Rhine and Moselle meet.
RHINE GORGE & RÜDESHEIM
Slipping our mooring at Koblenz we proceed upstream on the Rhine and soon encounter the impressive Marksburg Castle, a fortress dating back to the 13th-century. We then weave through the huge looping bend – one of the most impressive on the river – at Boppard, a wonderfully picturesque town known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’. Journeying further, you explore the most famous of all the river’s reaches and a real highlight of the cruise, the dramatic Rhine Gorge: steep vineyards give way to almost vertical rocky outcrops towering more than 600 feet above the sweeping valley sides. Sailing past Saint Goar and the many ruined castles, there’s a real sense of the myths surrounding this historic river coming alive around you.
After lunch, we moor in Rüdesheim, a classic Rhine wine village with crooked houses sloping down from wooded hillsides and terraced vineyards. During this afternoon’s delightful walking tour, witness the bustling marketplace, the half-timbered Klunkhardshof and Bromserburg Castle, which dates from 1275.
After dinner, this evening, another sumptuous affair prepared by your chef, maybe sample a small Asbach – the famous brandy distilled in Rüdesheim – while watching the last of the ferries crossing the river in the moonlight glow.
Still sailing upstream, the landscape becomes much wider and flatter, with gently rolling hills and vineyards that are home to the Liebfraumilch wines. Occasionally the excited chatter of birdlife breaks out as we pass oxbow lakes, long deserted by the river flow, which are now havens for over a hundred bird species.
Today we berth in historic Speyer, founded by the Celts and one of Germany’s oldest cities, celebrated for its illustrious past, for an afternoon walking tour. The breathtaking Imperial Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is among the largest Romanesque churches in the world; it’s also one of the finest. Its beautiful four-roomed crypt is the resting place of many Holy Roman emperors and German kings. Another landmark is the magnificent neo-Gothic Gedächtniskirche, built at the turn of the 20th-century to commemorate the 1529 ‘Protestation at Speyer’, a significant event when a group of Martin Luther’s followers protested against his imperial ban – henceforth Luther’s religious followers were known as ‘Protestants’. There’s free time to explore here before stepping back on board for another splendid dinner.
This morning we cruise gently upstream, passing through two spectacular locks, whose elaborate engineering never ceases to fascinate. Why not find a comfortable chair and catch up on some reading, play chess or watch the rolling kaleidoscope of scenery from the Sun Deck?
We soon arrive in France and moor in Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region. This afternoon we have a walking tour of its picturesque Old Town, bisected by canals and made up of a maze of narrow streets lined with timber-framed houses and sculptured portals. Unforgettable sites include the stupendous Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, multi-towered Ponts Couverts – covered bridges – and the pretty Petite France quarter of pastel-colored former artisans’ houses lining the canals. Don’t be surprised if you’re tempted to linger a while in a typical Alsatian café to sample some of the region’s world-famous wines – a crisp Riesling or that particular specialty of Alsace, spicy Gewürztraminer. Back on board this evening there’s a truly memorable occasion – the ‘Captain’s Dinner’, featuring delicious specialties of the countries and regions we visit during our cruise.
BREISACH & BLACK FOREST
Your final day cruising is spent gliding through the dramatic scenery of the rift valley separating the Vosges and Black Forest mountains. We arrive at the ancient town of Breisach, whose historic heart is surrounded by stone ramparts and dominated by the impressive Saint Stephan’s Cathedral.
Later you drive through some of Central Europe’s most stunning scenery – the Black Forest Mountains. This is a fabled landscape of rugged valleys, white-water rivers, cascading waterfalls and rolling hillsides covered with huge, densely packed pine trees – exactly as you expect it to be. Our destination is the idyllic village of Titisee, nestling on the shores of its crystal-clear lake.
Rejoining the ship, we resume our stately passage upriver. As the sun sets and the riverside lights begin to twinkle there are wonderful views over the imposing Vosges massif. You enjoy this evening’s dinner en route to Switzerland and our next mooring at Basel.
LUCERNE & BERNESE OBERLAND
For many today will be the highlight of the cruise. You first take the short drive to Lucerne, often considered Switzerland’s most beautiful city, spectacularly situated among stunning mountain views. It has been attracting well-heeled visitors for two centuries, including Queen Victoria. Highly recommended is an invigorating stroll along the Chapel Bridge, a unique covered wooden walkway crossing the lake, supported by stilts and lined with colorful flower-filled window boxes. Not only is it the city’s most iconic structure, it’s a superb way to absorb Lucerne’s regal atmosphere.
As you enter the Bernese Oberland the views become ever more breathtaking. This is the grand alpine heart of Europe with some of the finest mountain scenery on earth, described by the composer Mendelssohn as ‘the most wonderful of all in this unbelievably beautiful country’. On viewing the legendary snow-capped peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau you’ll be quite simply awestruck. We then ascend by mountain railway for more extraordinary vistas, with the crystal-clear lakes reflecting the grassy meadows and lush forests below. This truly magical landscape is sure to enchant you. Please note, temperatures will be significantly lower at altitude, even during the summer months, so it’s advisable to pack suitable clothing. Lunch is not included on this full day excursion; however the ship will offer a packed lunch.
We leave our cruise ship and take the train to historic Chur at the heart of Graubünden, the largest canton in Switzerland. As we leave behind Basel’s city skyline the scenery becomes ever more picturesque – a wild landscape of deep isolated valleys, sheer rocky summits and thick pine forests. Glittering sunlight pours from the blue skies above on to sparkling glaciers oozing from the lofty summits; this is truly some of the most awe-inspiring mountain scenery in the world.
We arrive in Switzerland’s oldest city, nestled in a forested valley with the Alps rising like an amphitheater around it. Chur has been inhabited for over 5,000 years; the Celts, Romans, Ostrogoths, and Franks have all ruled here due to its strategic position as a gateway to high alpine passes and important trade routes. Its characterful Old Town is a maze of winding cobbled alleys, handsome townhouses, refreshing fountains and quiet courtyards. Set high above the streets, its rising spires puncturing the sky, is the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary’s Ascension, a fascinating mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles with a fantastically ornate interior.
Officially trilingual, Chur has a distinctly cosmopolitan, almost Mediterranean ambiance. It’s a center for outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, but also a spot to indulge in the more leisurely pastimes of eating and window-shopping – its streets are lined with restaurants, boutiques, and traditional shops. If you’re feeling hungry, look out for the regional specialty of Bündnerfleisch – prime beef traditionally air-dried in the eaves of a barn or open attic, then carved into wafer-thin slices. It’s usually enjoyed with other cold meats and washed down with a cooling glass of the purest local mineral water. For something stronger, enjoy a refreshing drink in your choice of the city’s many atmospheric bars and cafés.
There’s free time to explore the city at your leisure. We stay one night at the historic Hotel Stern Chur, with breakfast.
GLACIER EXPRESS
After breakfast, we embark on an unforgettable scenic and spectacular rail journey – the legendary Glacier Express. Our starting point at Chur is the lowest point of the route to Zermatt and the iconic Matterhorn, Switzerland’s most famous mountain and a ‘must-see’ highlight for many. The train first winds its way through the ‘Swiss Grand Canyon’, a dramatic section of the Upper Rhine where the river has carved deep into an eerie landscape of white rocks, climbing ever higher along the Oberalp Pass to a height of 6,673 feet.
At this altitude the mountain landscape becomes ever more eye-catching – lush wildflower meadows are studded with tiny shepherds’ shelters, dense forests sweep up scree-covered mountainsides and snow-capped mountains glisten in the sunshine. You could be lucky and catch a glimpse of an elusive ibex or chamois negotiating a rocky ledge, or even a golden eagle soaring high above.
It’s impossible not to marvel at the engineering achievements as the track traverses jaw-dropping precipices and snakes into tunnels hewn through mountain walls into the Upper Rhône Valley, with dramatic views at every turn. We pass countless torrential mountain streams and tumbling waterfalls before arriving at the legendary village of Zermatt, nestling at the foot of the instantly recognizable Matterhorn.
Zermatt itself is iconically Swiss. It’s a car-free jumble of chalets and wooden farm huts strewn across the valley floor, surrounded by lush pastures alive with the sound of cowbells, while dramatic cable cars and soaring footpaths weave ever upwards to a majestic amphitheater of lofty summits. Overseeing it all is the ultimate attraction in this alpine wonderland – the mighty, mythical Matterhorn. Seeing this pyramid-shaped symbol of Switzerland in its unrivaled glory is truly one of life’s ‘wow’ moments and it doesn’t disappoint!
We stay for two nights at the chalet-style Hotel Simi, with breakfast.
Today you may wish to explore Zermatt further under your own steam, or you can take Europe’s highest open-air cog railway to the Gornergrat for more stupendous vistas. This extraordinary train service departs from Zermatt and climbs through a glorious landscape of mountains, valleys, lakes, streams, and grassy meadows; you won’t be surprised that some of the country’s best hiking trails are here. The train stops at the summit of the Gornergrat, an altitude of just over 10,000 feet, where you’re surrounded by 29 snow-capped peaks – including the Matterhorn – and numerous glaciers, together creating an absolutely jaw-dropping mountain panorama. Sit back and admire a view of some of the mightiest peaks in the world – their magnitude and beauty will simply astound you.
Maybe enjoy a leisurely lunch against this most dazzling of backdrops before descending to Zermatt. Perhaps take a cable car ride for more dramatic views or visit the Alpine Museum with its intriguing collection of mountaineering memorabilia. Or you can simply relax over afternoon tea in a cozy café and soak up the magical alpine ambiance.

CHUR/START OF CRUISE

The city skyline begins to appear as we arrive in Basel, ready for our short transfer to your luxurious new home for the next 7 nights. (B, D)
What a start to our cruise, as for many, today will be one of the highlights. You firstly take the short drive to Lucerne. Spectacularly nestled among stunning mountain views, it is by far Switzerland’s most beautiful city and has been attracting well-heeled visitors for two centuries, one of the most famous of which being our own Queen Victoria. You must take an invigorating stroll along the Chapel Bridge: symbol of the city, a unique and covered wooden walkway crossing the lake, supported by stilts, lined with colorful flower-filled window boxes and a superb way to absorb Lucerne’s rather regal atmosphere.
The scenery becomes ever more dramatic, and as you enter the Bernese Oberland in central Switzerland, it becomes quite literally, breathtaking! This is the grand Alpine heart of Europe and amongst the finest mountain scenery on earth, described by the composer Mendelssohn as ‘the most wonderful of all in this unbelievably beautiful country’. On viewing the legendary snow-capped peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, you’ll be quite simply awestruck; this is quintessential Switzerland at its very best.
We then ascend by mountain railway for more extraordinary vistas, with the crystal-clear lakes reflecting the grassy meadows and lush forests below. This truly magical landscape is sure to enchant you. Later we’ll descend again by mountain railway before making the coach journey back to our ship in Basel.
Please note: temperatures will be significantly lower at altitude, even during the summer months, so it’s advisable to pack suitable clothing. Lunch is not included on this full-day excursion; however, the ship will offer a packed lunch.
Tonight, you’ll enjoy another splendid dinner in the excellent restaurant as the ship cruises majestically towards our next mooring, Breisach.
BREISACH & THE BLACK FOREST
We have made steady progress overnight and this morning we are berthed in the ancient town of Breisach. After a leisurely breakfast stroll ashore, explore this picturesque town’s historic heart, which is surrounded by immense stone ramparts and dominated by the impressive Saint Stephan’s Cathedral.
We re-join the ship and slip our moorings during tonight’s excellent dinner. As the sun sets and the riverside lights begin to twinkle, enjoy the views through the restaurant’s panoramic windows as we commence our cruise towards Strasbourg, arriving later tonight.
This morning, we have arrived in France and Strasbourg, capital of the Alsace region. After breakfast we enjoy a walking tour of its picturesque 16th-century old town – a maze of narrow streets and canals lined with timber-framed houses and sculptured portals. Unforgettable sights include the stupendous Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, multi-towered Ponts Couverts – covered bridges – and the pretty Petite France quarter of pastel-coloured former artisans’ houses lining the canals. Don’t be surprised if you’re tempted to linger a while in a typical Alsatian café to sample some of the region’s world-famous wines – a crisp Riesling or that particular speciality of Alsace, spicy Gewürztraminer.
During lunch, our elegant vessel glides away from our mooring as we commence an afternoon’s scenic cruising. Head up to the sun deck and take in the views from the comfort of a sun lounger or retire to the shady comfort of the lounge to chat over a coffee with newly made friends.
As evening falls, thoughts turn to what might be on the menu tonight, so head to the relaxed ambience of the ship’s restaurant as the chef presents another delicious meal. Retire to the bar as we arrive in Speyer later tonight.
We remain moored in Speyer this morning to enjoy a guided tour of this delightful medieval gem, founded by the Celts and one of Germany’s oldest cities, celebrated for its illustrious past. The breathtaking Imperial Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is among the largest Romanesque churches in the world and also one of the finest. The beautiful four-roomed crypt, with its striking marble floors and pastel-coloured pillars, is the resting place of many Holy Roman emperors and German kings. Henceforth, Luther’s religious followers were known as Protestants.
Returning on board for lunch, we commence our cruise once again, so sit back and watch the idyllic scenery slipping past through the panoramic windows: rolling hills and fertile vineyards, home to the Liebfraumilch wines of the region, oxbow lakes, long deserted by the river flow and now havens for bird and wildlife.
During dinner this evening our vessel arrives in the classic Rhine wine village of Rüdesheim, so you might fancy wandering ashore to enjoy a digestif – perhaps a glass of Asbach, the famous brandy distilled locally.
RÜDESHEIM, RHINE GORGE & KOBLENZ
This morning we moor in Rüdesheim, a classic Rhine wine village with crooked houses sloping down from wooded hillsides and terraced vineyards. During the delightful walking tour, witness the bustling marketplace, the half-timbered Klunkhardshof and Bromserburg Castle, which dates from 1275. This afternoon we witness a real highlight of the cruise, the dramatic Rhine Gorge: steep vineyards give way to almost vertical rocky outcrops, towering over 1,000 feet above the sweeping valley sides. Sailing past Saint Goar and the many ruined castles, you get a real sense of the myths of this historic river coming alive around you. No legend is more famous than that surrounding the Loreley Rock, where beautiful nymphs distracted hapless sailors, luring them to their deaths in the treacherous waters. Relax on the sun deck as our captain skilfully navigates the ship through the huge looping bend at Boppard – one of the most impressive on the river. Keep an eye out for the mighty Marksburg Castle too, an impressive fortress dating back to the 13th century.
It’s not long before we arrive in picturesque Koblenz; founded by the Romans, the city is beautifully located at the confluence of the Rhine and its sister, the Moselle. The waterfront along the Moselle is stunning too, with the medieval Balduin Bridge, staggeringly still in use. If you managed to resist the tempting cakes on offer from the beckoning pavement cafés, then you’ll be ready for your meticulously prepared dinner on board and afterwards, perhaps a quiet stroll along the riverside promenade to the Deutsches Eck – German Corner – where the great rivers Rhine and Moselle meet.
Early risers will witness our departure from Koblenz as we set sail towards Cologne. Enjoy a leisurely morning on board as we drift through this lovely Rhineland scenery, past quaint riverside towns with pretty waterfronts and carefully tended vineyards. During lunch, we arrive in historic Cologne, where you have a free afternoon to explore the city.
Perhaps visit the superb cathedral, the largest Gothic structure on earth. It has Europe’s most stunningly intricate stained glass, which took 600 years to finish and when work was finally complete, it was the largest building on earth, remaining so until eclipsed by the Eiffel Tower. Or maybe you’ll opt to wander in the vibrant and attractive old town, beautifully restored and boasting a plethora of excellent shopping and cozy bars, some of which still traditionally brew their own beer.
This evening, the Captain’s Dinner will take place on board, serving delicious specialities of the countries and regions we visit during our cruise, as you reflect on the spectacular sights seen and wonderful places visited whilst traveling with us on this magical cruise.

A Volga river cruise is more than a geographical voyage; it’s also a journey through Russia’s rich and captivating history. No other experience takes you so completely to another place and time. The Volga is Europe’s longest and largest river; it meanders through the stories of Ivan the Terrible and his rise to power, the two historic ‘Greats’ Peter and Catherine, and then on into today. It’s a unique opportunity to see modern Russia in the context of its intriguing history, ably assisted by friendly and professional academics and tour guides. A Volga Dream Russian river tour promises to leave you with an unforgettable afterglow of fond memories.
Moscow to St. Petersburg River Cruise
Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia’s best-known cities, but the towns of Russia’s historic Golden Ring are delightful too. The luxurious Volga Dream offers a unique opportunity to visit these Russian gems by sailing gently along the Volga River on an unforgettable cruising experience. In small, exclusive groups you’ll enjoy preferential access to some of Russia’s most significant cultural sites.
Moscow to Astrakhan River Cruise
Your River Cruise on the luxurious MS Volga Dream takes you from Moscow along Russia’s grand Volga River to the legend that is Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) and Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. Along the way, you’ll discover the treasures of Yaroslavl, the oldest city on the Volga, medieval Nizhniy Novgorod and beautiful Kazan, the ancient Tatar capital. We plan our tour carefully to combine the very best of Moscow with a world-class Volga River cruise.
Discover Russia with MS Volga Dream - Click-through map
We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.
Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.
This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.
Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.
The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.
A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.
Nizhny Novgorod
This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.
Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.
Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.
This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.
Saint Petersburg
If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.
Cocktails with the Captain
Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.
Matryoshka doll painting
There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!
Superb Service & Dining
Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.
Meet the Professor
From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.
Beginner’s Russian
The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!
Russian tea tasting
The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.
Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting
All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!
Russian Cooking Class
A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital
Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Titan Travel VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your flight to Basel. Upon arrival, embark MS Serenade 1 (4T), where light refreshments are available. A welcome cocktail and captain’s gala dinner are served this evening.
Photo-worthy views of Switzerland’s mountain scenery are on the cards today. We take a coach down to Arth-Goldau station, then journey up the slopes of Mount Rigi by cogwheel train. At the top, there’s plenty of time to roam around and soak up the scenery. Vistas from the various viewpoints up here sweep across the rolling hills of the Mittelland and snow-dusted Swiss Alps, with sunlight glistening on the waters of a dozen-odd lakes. After riding the train back down, we take a steamboat across Lake Lucerne to its namesake city. You have some free time to explore, before we head back to Basel by coach.
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Having cruised across the border into Germany overnight, we awake in the pretty town of Breisach. We’ve got most of the day here – spend your time exploring the town, or join an optional trip through the Black Forest to Lake Titisee, a beautiful glacial lake with a backdrop of wooded mountains. As well as cruising the lake, we take a guided walking tour in Triberg.
Delve into the UNESCO-listed old town of Strasbourg today. Discover its cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses on foot and by boat, with an expert local guide bringing the centuries-old sights to life. One of the city’s highlights is its cathedral, a 15th century Gothic masterpiece with sky-scraping spires.
Today begins in Mainz, Germany’s capital during the reign of the Romans. Tour the rose-pink cathedral and view the collections in the Gutenberg Museum and Landesmuseum at leisure; or journey south for an optional walking tour of Speyer and its 1,000-year-old cathedral. We set off early this afternoon to begin our cruise down the Lorelei Passage (one of the narrowest stretches of the Rhine) and through the spectacular scenery of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. We arrive in our next port of call, Koblenz, in the early evening.
We continue to Cologne, with the option to join an optional walking tour or explore under your own steam. From museums to medieval churches, cathedrals to café-lined squares, there’s plenty to see.
We glide into Amsterdam around lunchtime today. As well as seeing the sights by coach, we board a canal boat to see the city’s beautiful bridges and famously wonky townhouses from the water. The captain’s farewell gala dinner is served this evening. We remain moored here overnight, so if you have a chance, go for a walk along the canals after sunset, when strings of lights illuminate the bridges.
We transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.

Wine and dine on the Rhine with Viking
Author: Wendy Rigg

Soak up the romance of the river, says Wendy Rigg
At 1,231km long, the Rhine wends from the Swiss Alps through Germany, France and the Netherlands into the North Sea.
Trimmed with cities such as Basel, Strasbourg, Cologne and Amsterdam, it’s been a leading trade route since Roman times.
As soon as I board the Longship Viking Sigrun with my friend of 40 years, Fiona, hotel manager Daniel Crisan makes us feel at home.
Our twin-bed Scandi-style stateroom has plenty of storage space. French windows slide open and waves lap gently against the hull.
BEAUTIFUL BASEL
One of the country’s richest cities, Basel, in northern Switzerland, is first on our itinerary.
Piano notes of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ drift across a sleepy square near the cathedral and we marvel at Les Trois Rois, one of Basel’s oldest lodgings, which counts Charles Dickens, Queen Elizabeth II, Pablo Picasso and the Rolling Stones among its visitors.
The 500-year-old town hall meanwhile has the wow factor, as it’s painted scarlet and adorned with frescoes.
For a cultural fix, Kunstmuseum Basel houses work by artists from the 15th century onwards.
Our guide Aaron Goldsmith explains, “Two Picasso paintings on loan to the gallery were meant to be sold, but citizens pushed for funding to keep them. Picasso was so moved, he donated four of his paintings to the gallery”.
HIKING HEAVEN
Trekking in the Black Forest’s Ravenna Gorge is a real highlight. Crossing cascading waterfalls on narrow wooden bridges, and arriving at an old mill makes me feel like I have ambled into a Grimms’ fairytale.
GOTHIC SPLENDOUR
The seat of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, is a picturesque city with an astronomical clock atop a Gothic cathedral.
We climb its spire for views of rooftops fringed by Black Forest. We also see a colony of storks on huge nests before wandering cobbled streets scented with the aroma of tarte flambée. Our guide Gil Gosshen says, “It’s a thin dough base covered in melted Gruyère, Emmental and bacon”.
Church bells peal and swans pose by the river as we glide beneath an azure sky along the Middle Rhine – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cruise’s jewel in the crown.
There are more than 60 fairytale castles, each a glimpse into bygone times when noblemen oversaw trade, collected tolls and defended their kingdoms. Romance is in the air as some are now hotels – the perfect wedding setting.
The Romans recognised that the soil and microclimate were favourable for grape cultivation, and today vineyards cling to steep slopes that plunge into the river. Riesling is the area’s most widespread grape variety, and an extensive wine list onboard is an oenophile’s dream.
Next, we see Loreley Rock – a 132m slate outcrop named after a beautiful woman who, according to an 1801 ballad, jumped to her death here. An eerie melody plays over the ship’s PA as we pass by en route to Koblenz.
Cologne boasts an intricately carved Gothic cathedral, which took 600 years to build. Miraculously, it survived the Second World War bombs that destroyed surrounding homes. We also visit a museum dedicated to Eau de Cologne perfume.
WINDMILL WONDERS
Then it’s onwards to Kinderdijk in the Netherlands. It’s a treat to cycle along pathways fringed with wildflowers to a 17th-century windmill museum and hear how the Dutch tackle water levels.
The museum’s traditional interior is charming, with Delft pottery, monochrome photographs and wooden clogs on a shoe rack.
AUF WIEDERSEHEN
Fiona and I have made great friends – Kent and Liz from Arizona; Erin and her husband Jamie from Ohio; and university student Daniel, with his grandma and parents from New York. After a port talk, dinner and a few gin gimlets, everyone is invited to the UK.
