Choosing between Sri lanka & the Maldives can be a challenge! So why bother, they are just 1.5 hours between each other by plane, with Sri Lanka Airlines offering regular flights.

Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide

In this post, I will outline my DIY travel guide to two weeks in both Sri Lanka & the Maldives! Two Contrasting places which should be on your bucket list! You can tailor this trip to suit your needs and even do two weeks or more in each destination.

Sri Lanka: One Week Itinerary

Best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka has a tropical asian climate, so is warm at any time throughout the year. However, they do have monsoons which are active during different times of the year & on different parts of the island.

The best time to visit Sri Lankas is between  December & Feb/March.  This is the best time  if you plan on visiting the  west coast or south west of Sri Lanka.

The best time to visit the east coast is between April-September.

Hot-Air-Balloon-Tour-Sri-Lanka (Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)

Which airport do I fly into?

Bandaranaike International  Airport  at  Katunayake , is the main International  Airport  in  Sri  Lanka. This airport is located 30km to the north of Sri Lankas Capital city, Colombo.

(Airport code CMB)

Do i need a Visa to travel to Sri Lanka?

Yes, you will need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka. I suggest registering online then simply collecting it from the airport when you arrive in Sri Lanka. Its quite a simple process just fill out the form online and pay the fee of $35 USD. Then they will send you a notification email to tell you if you have been approved.

I got my approval by the next morning, but i suggest you do this a couple weeks in advance to be on the safe side.

Sri Lanka one week Itinerary:

  • Kandy Nuwara Eliya

Looping round to finish back in Colombo.

Day 1: Colombo

Getting from sri lanka airport (bandaranaike) to colombo.

Bandaranaike Airport to Colombo is 30km away with taxis and express buses running regularly. This can cost you anywhere from $0.70 to $20 depending upon you mode of transport and will take approximately 30-45 mins.

Taxi  - The Taxis have air conditioning and cost between $15-$20 USD. (2600LKR-3600)

Bus -  The Bus is definitely the most cost effective at just $0.70 (125LKR& surprisingly comfortable option as it has AC. To catch it, head just across from the terminal and catch bus number 187-E3

Colombo-SRi Lanka-one week itinerary

Colombo is an often overlooked city of which many people tend to pass through but to be honest there is so many great local sights & temples to see! As alot of the attractions/temples are spread out you will have to hop on one of the many Tuk Tuks especially if your here for just one day.

It can get pretty hot during the morning, so i suggest doing your main sightseeing during the afternoon. Like any major tourist city, be aware of scammers offering to "show you the way".

Attractions to see:

Gangaramaya temple & beira lake.

Gangaramaya Temple is a fantastic buddhist temple, with a unique architecture & everything from a gigantic buddha in the centre to one of the smallest buddha statues in the world.

Insider Tip: Make sure you have spare change for the entrance fee which is 200 LKR, approx $1 USD)

Seema Malaka Temple

Located nearby to Gangaramaya temple is the golden buddha cladded Seema Malaka temple! Located over Beira Lake the temple is split into three platforms connected by small bridges.

maldives tour from sri lanka

Afterwards but sure to take a moment to admire the stunning Beira Lake.

Day 2: Dambulla & Safari at Minneriya National Park

Including the iconic Dambulla & a Safari in  Minneriya National Park  in just one day can be a real challenge!

There is 100km (60 miles) between colombo at Habarana so this was definitely my busiest day with lots of traveling. So if you have time do it over two days!  Having said that, it stills possible to do in one day, just make sure you leave Colombo early.

On the way to Habarana, you have to stop at Dambulla Cave temple! A UNESCO word heritage site featuring a maze of fresco covered caves, the largest & most well preserved in Sri Lanka!

Also called the golden temple of Dambulla, the temples contain 153 buddha statues, in addition to Sri Lankan kings, gods & goddesses! There is a massive 80 caves in the area, but the 3 main ones include:

Cave of the Divine King

Highlights include at massive 14-meter statue of the Buddha!

maldives tour from sri lanka

Cave of the Great Kings

Like something form Indiana Jones, this is the largest Cave and a magical place featuring statues of gods and of course kings! The cave measures 52m from east to west, and 23m from the entrance to the back.

Great New Monastery

This has some amazing ceiling and wall paintings in the Kandy style .

Safari at Minneriya National Park

After immersing yourself in the caves head back out to daylight, to Minneriya National Park near Habaran city. At Minneriya you can enjoy an amazing Safari.

Minneriya National Park, was originally declared a wildlife sanctuary back in 1938 and you can see why! With seasonal groups of elephants and large flocks of tropical birds.

The main elephant gathering occurs between September & October when over 350 elephants flock to the dried out Minneriya lake. The area is around 5 & half hours from Columbo . Close by you can find the ruined monasteries and royal palaces of Polonnaruwa!

You can also visit Kadulla National Park nearby, sometimes the Elephants migrate over from Minneriya National Park. So ask you guide which would be better when you visit.

Day 3: Hike up Sigirya Rock

Sigirya is rock is the most iconic rock formation in Sri Lanka! At over 1300ft high (400m), this offers incredible panoramic views from the top!

To get to the top, you will have to take the stairs! In total, there are 1,200 steps to Lion Fortress, which is the highest viewpoint on  Sigiriya rock.  Although, you need to be reasonably fit, there are many platforms along the way where you can take breaks & drink water! The views at the top are spectacularly worth it!

Sigiriya, Dambulla Mountain , Sri Lanka is awe inspiring.

Historical Significance:

Sigirya was chosen by King Kasyapa who reigned between (477 – 495 CE) to be the new capital of Sri Lanka. The king built his palace atop of the 400m rock which gates in the shape of a lion! Hence the name Lion Fortress. When the king died the palace was completely deserted.

Insider Tip: Head to Sigirya rock early in the morning, before the mid day sun cooks you and the tourist groups descend on the area, as it has become popular in recent years.

Other Tips: Bring Water & snacks on your journey & the hike!

If you have a few extra days head to Pidurangala Rock, which offering breath taking views of Sigiriya rock. You can also stay somewhere local, before heading to Kandy.

Day 4: Kandy

Kandy is Sri Lankas cultural hub and a must visit city for any length of trip to Sri Lanka, it's also on the UNESCO list.

Temples of Sacred Tooth Relic

A popular attraction here is the Sacred Tooth Relic temple, this is one of the most spiritual places in Sri Lanka and legend says it contains a tooth relic from the Buddha.

Independent guides offer tours around the entire temple for around Rs 600 ($3). Free audio guides are also available from the ticket office.

If you time your trip correctly, you may get to experience one of the exciting fire shows which take place nearby, lots of times per week.

Royal Botanical Gardens

The  Royal Botanical Gardens  are truly awe inspiring! Located in Peradeniya, just 5km from Kandy, the Royal gardens are bucket list place for those who love all things nature! With over 147 acres of lush greenery & colorful flowers there is plenty to explore! The main highlights include the orchid house and the suspension bridge.

maldives tour from sri lanka

Insider Tip: Kandy is the perfect place to go Souvenir shopping, with plenty of unique gifts and natural health & beauty products on offer.

Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by Train!

The wind in your hair, the scenic views and the noises of history, train Journeys around Sri Lanka, offer a scenic & ever so romantic way of seeing the country! That is why I suggest, taking one from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya!

This is part of the Kandy to Ella Train Journey which is known as the one of the most scenic in the world! You will see everything from tea plantations & banana trees to villages & waterfalls!

Ella-Sri-Lanka-Nine-arch-bridge- Couple.  (Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)

Train Times: Your best bet is to take a  train  from  Peradeniya station , about 7 km from  Kandy  (take a tuk tuk or Bus) to  Nanu Oya station  approximately 8 km from  Nuwara Eliya .  2 trains run daily , which depart Peradeniya at 08:40 and 12:23.

2nd or 1st Class?

The main difference here being AC, to be honest I was in 2nd class and it was fine due to the many open windows. Also, considering  Nuwara Eliya  is mountainous and the Coldest city is Sri Lanka!  The temperature was less than 20'C in august, either way the choice is yours

Which side of the Train should I sit?

Kandy  -  Nuwara Eliya , sit on the right side for most of the sights, and if coming back sit on the left  side.  (Left and right referenced to the forward direction of the train)

Insider Tip: Bring some on train drinks & snacks as the journey is very long, they do sell some on the train but there is not much of a quality selection. As you approach large train stations, some sellers will offer you goods through the window!

maldives tour from sri lanka

Issues with the Train?

There have been many reports of the train getting really full and people being unable to get a ticket, especially during peak season, (up until march).

Faster Options include:

Tuk Tuk Journey - 2-3 hours

Bus - 2-3 hours

A Tuk Tuk Journey with a cool river/guide is perfect as you can stop when you see great sights, take photos and even stop for snacks! Definitely consider this an option, if your traveling during peak season.

Day 6: Neuwara Elliya

Neuwara Elliya means the "city of light" and is a Scenic hilly area covered with lush Tea Plantations. Popular attractions here include:

Pedro Tea Estate, Factory Tour

Pedro Tea Estate is located 3.5km east of  Nuwara Eliya  towards Kandapola. The 20 minute guided tour is interesting as you get to see machinery built in 1885, but I was disappointed not to see much tea brimming action in the factory.

It turns out here they make a lighter tea, in which processing only happens at night when its colder!

Insider Tip: Watch out for leeches if your heading into the tea plantations! Eww!

Hakgala Gardens

Beautiful Gardens located 10km southeast of Nuwara Eliya. Popular sights include, the fine rose garden, the orchid selection and even a Japanese Garden! Be aware the entrance fee can be a little high.

Insider tip: Try to avoid the gardens between Jan-March as this is the planting season so the garden will not look as good as normal.

How to get to Hakgala Gardens?

To get to hakgala gardens, take a welimada-bound bus (rs 22) it takes 20 minutes., best viewpoint - lovers leap waterfall.

After heading to Pedro Tea Estate, take a fantastic walk 5km (round-trip) walk to Lovers Leap, a stunning waterfall.

maldives tour from sri lanka

Other highlights include:  Seetha Amman Temple, and Lake Gregory

Day 7: Negombo beach

After trekking through Sri Lanka, its nice to relax on at least one Sri Lankan Beach before jetting off! Located just 15 km from the airport, Negombo Beach is a stunning retreat to relax & watch the sunset.

However, be aware that like lots of Sri Lanka the seas can sometimes be rough so don't expect tranquility much there...but if your a surfer its heaven!

Negombo beach Sri Lanka

Insider tip: Negombo is actually a great place to stay for at least 2-3 days and explore so if you have longer feel free.

maldives tour from sri lanka

Experience the very best of Sri Lanka and unwind in the Maldives on a 3 night stay on this small group tour. A perfect blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation, explore Colombo, Galle Fort, Nuwara Eliya's tea country, and game drives at Yala and Minneriya national parks.

Day 1 Colombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and make your way to the arrival lounge, where our local representative can assist to arrange transportation to your hotel. Taxis are readily available, cost approximately $15-20 (3,000 - 3,500 LKR) and must be paid locally.  Alternatively, we also offer hassle free arrival transfers for customers which can be purchased after selecting your preferred date of departure.

Day 2 Colombo South Coast

After breakfast, your leader will give you a brief introduction before we make the drive along the South Coast. Before departing, we explore the capital of Colombo. Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. This heritage is reflected in its architecture, mixing colonial buildings with high-rises and shopping malls.

We will also visit the Colombo National Museum. This charming museum takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Sri Lankan history. Housed in a stunning neo-Baroque building, which was specifically constructed by William Henry Gregory, Governor of Ceylon, in 1877, the museum boasts a gleaming white façade. As you make your way through the various rooms, you'll encounter exhibits dedicated to each of Sri Lanka's historical kingdoms. Informational display boards provide intriguing insights, such as the meaning behind the mudras (gestures and poses) depicted in Sri Lanka's Buddha statues.

On arrival, we check in to our hotel before we set out on a tour of the Galle Fort and its fortifications (may occur on day 3). This is a city that exudes an essence with a perfect blend of past and present. Declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1988, the presence of Portuguese, Dutch and English is very evident in the fascinating architectural styles of the Galle Fort.

You will arrive at your hotel in the afternoon, where you will have the evening at your leisure.

The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, in consultation with British engineers. It is located in Demodara, between Ella and Demodara railway stations. The surrounding area has seen a steady increase of tourism due to the bridge's architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides.

On arrival we visit a tea plantation and factory. Here you will enjoy the absolute tea experience, taking you to the moment the young tea leaves are plucked from the plantation to being processed in the factory to make a steamy cup of tea. If you are interested, the tea factory is the best place to purchase good quality tea.

Enjoy an evening at your leisure.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Please review our terms and conditions here: https://www.inspiringvacations.com/au/page/terms-and-conditions

Pre-Tour Essentials

  • Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an impressive sight and is one of the highlights of this tour. However, if you have a fear of heights you might prefer to skip this excursion as climbing the rock requires navigating numerous uneven, narrow steps and confined walkways.
  • During the summer months in Sri Lanka, the weather can be extremely hot, accompanied by brief but intense rainstorms in the southwestern region. Make sure to evaluate if this season is suitable for your travel plans, and remember to use sufficient sun protection and stay well-hydrated.
  • Please note that Yala National Park closes for a period between the months of September and October. The exact closure dates are made clear closer to the time. For departure dates that fall over this period, as defined in the departure dates listed, Yala National park will be replaced with a visit to Udawalawe National Park, while still being able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park. Please refer to the itinerary.

Visas & Entry Requirements

Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here:

https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information

You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.

We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

Travel Insurance  Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our tours. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-tour cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.

We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international tours, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure. If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.

Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.

Health & Wellness All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this tour. Our group tours are designed to immerse you in incredible sights and activities, often involving walking tours and self-exploration. To ensure you can fully embrace every moment, we recommend a moderate level of fitness for all of our tours.

When selecting your tour please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that in the assessment of our Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a tour without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.

Open communication helps us ensure your tour is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.

Information for CPAP Users If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking . Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping tours, may have limited access to power outlets. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your tour.

Please ensure that you check the voltage used throughout the countries you are travelling to and if it will be compatible with your machines. For example, Japan runs on 100 volts vs Australia at 220-240 volts, meaning a voltage converter might be required.

Optional Tours  Depending on the package, you may have the option to pre-book optional tours through your Traveller Hub account. To secure your spot pre-booking these tours in advance is highly recommended. While some tours require a minimum number of participants to operate, you'll be fully refunded if the tour is cancelled at your destination for this reason. Our optional tours are typically led by your tour leader or local guide. Please note that transportation to and from the optional tours is not included, but your tour leader or local guide will be happy to assist you with navigating public transportation options like trains or taxis to reach the starting point.

Travelling in a group  Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group.

We kindly ask that you are requested to be at a place at a certain time that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your tour before departure.

Community Guidelines  Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.

Romantic relationships between travelers and the Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative are not permitted while on tour.

Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.

If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.

Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs. Local Guide  While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire tour, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.

Coach Transportation  The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.

While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries,  we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.

For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.

Itinerary Changes Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.

This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your tour! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.

Staying Connected If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance in doing so. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure. Purchasing a local SIM at the airport is the final option. For a prepaid fee, you can get data by simply swapping your current SIM with your new SIM and depending on which package you purchase, you’ll be able to text and make phone calls, just as you would at home.

We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.

Getting Around While touring Sri Lanka, you will be travelling by private coach and trains. For some coach journeys, where applicable there will be comfort stops along the way where you can freshen up, stretch your legs, use the bathroom and often, purchase refreshments. Generally, lunch stops will be taken at rest stops as they can easily accommodate our large groups.

For the train ride to Nuwara Eliya, it is not possible to confirm the train ticket reservation due to the fact that Sri Lanka Railway has a manual system for reservations. Tickets can only be booked 30 days prior to departure. The 1st and 2nd class is basic but has air-conditioning. The non-air conditioned 3rd class sometimes is the only option based availability. On the rare occasion the train is fully booked we’ll conduct the route by road and the train journey would be conducted on day 8.

Hotel Ratings Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.

This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.

Accommodation Details This tour features a curated selection of 3 to 5-star hotels and resorts throughout Sri Lanka. Each accommodation has been carefully chosen based on a stringent set of criteria, ensuring the high standards of comfort and convenience. Our team continuously reviews and updates our selections, incorporating customer feedback to guarantee that every hotel is well-located and offers a comfortable stay.

In the Maldives, you will have an all inclusive package at your incredible tropical accommodation. Your all-inclusive package includes:

  • Breakfast, lunch & dinner daily - snacks & cakes are available outside main mealtimes
  • Tea, coffee, iced tea, cordials & water are available from 07.30am to midnight
  • Whisky, brandy, gin, vodka, rum, draft beer, house wines, soft drinks, selected cocktails & mocktails beverages are served until midnight (no alcoholic beverages for guests under 18 years of age). Additional cost may apply during excursions
  • Meals and drinks are included until midday on the date of departure

Our Maldives hotel offers some phenomenal snorkelling opportunities, where you can explore the shallow oases at the island's edge. You may also choose to enjoy some exciting optional water sport activities, such as catamaran sailing where you can experience the thrill of riding the winds and speeding through the crystal waters. Canoeing may also appeal to those who seek tranquillity while they enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Windsurfing is also an activity available to the more adventurous. There really is no end to the adventures you may seek as you explore the wonderful Maldives - jet-skiing, parasailing, and scuba diving may also be on your list.

Yala National Park Please note that Yala National Park closes for a period between the months of September and October. The exact closure dates are made clear closer to the time. The closure is due to the prevailing dry weather prior to this time and taking into consideration the well-being of the wildlife in the reserve. For departure dates that fall over this period, as defined in the departure dates listed below, Yala National park will be replaced with a visit to Udawalawe National Park, while still being able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park. Please refer to the itinerary.

Although smaller in size to Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park is considered one of the world's best places to see wild elephants. Largely comprised of grasslands and bush forest, Udawalawe is also one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for game spotting and being far less crowded than Yala, it makes for a more enjoyable experience for travellers and therefore, we believe is a more than suitable alternative for one safari day. You will still be able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park, so you are able to experience both.

Packing Essentials What you need to pack for your tour will vary according to the tour style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and when you are travelling. We recommend you pack as lightly as possible, ensuring that you can carry and lift your luggage, and walk with it for short distances or up or down a flight of stairs.

A lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for this tour. Many tours will include internal flights which often have luggage weight restrictions, and it is recommended that you keep your main luggage weight around 15kg and no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water, a camera, a jacket, and your essentials while touring during the day.

  • Clothing: Pack a mix of lightweight and warm layers. Long sleeves and pants are beneficial for mosquito protection. Choose clothes that are easy to wash and dry. Bring an outfit for dining out in Colombo, and ensure you have attire that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits. Women might find a light scarf useful for additional coverage.
  • Footwear: Closed-in shoes are recommended to protect your feet from injuries and potential bites or stings, whether you're walking in urban areas or through nature.
  • Sun Protection: Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun.
  • Warm Gear: The hills of Sri Lanka can get cold at night. A light, warm waterproof jacket is advisable.
  • Medical Kit: It's good to carry personal items like mild painkillers, electrolytes, Band-Aids, and insect repellent. Ensure you plan ahead and have any prescription medicines you may require..
  • Water Bottle: A capacity of at least 1.5 litres is recommended to reduce the environmental impact of bottled water.
  • Camera/Phone: Don’t forget to bring something to capture memories.
  • Comfort Items: Earplugs can help with noisy environments, a good book or journal for downtime, and a music player for entertainment.

Climate  Sri Lanka's tropical climate offers warmth year-round, but weather conditions vary across the island. The southwest monsoon season from May to September brings heavy rains and humidity to the southwestern regions, including Colombo and Galle, making these areas lush and vibrant. In contrast, the northeast monsoon from October to January affects the northeastern parts.

The central highlands, including Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, experience cooler temperatures and frequent rain, providing a refreshing escape from the coastal heat. The best time to visit the southwest coast is from December to March, while the northeast coast is ideal from April to September. We recommend you pack accordingly, using adequate sun protection and staying hydrated, especially during the hot summer months.

Regardless of the season, Sri Lanka's diverse climate ensures a unique and enriching travel experience throughout the year. Click HERE for more information on weather in Sri Lanka.

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging between 25°C (77°F) and 31°C (88°F). The dry season, from November to April, offers sunny skies and calm seas, ideal for beach activities and water sports. The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity, more frequent rain, and occasional storms, though there are still plenty of sunny days.

Currency and ATMs The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available and accept credit and debit cards, and major credit cards are accepted in larger shops and restaurants in major cities. However, for small payments, credit and debit cards are typically not accepted, so it's essential to have LKR cash on hand for daily expenses.

The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US Dollars are widely accepted, especially in resorts and tourist areas. Most resorts, hotels, and larger businesses accept major credit cards, though it's advisable to carry some cash for small purchases or in case of emergencies.

Food and Allergies  Sri Lankan cuisine is a delightful blend of flavours, heavily influenced by its diverse cultural heritage. Expect aromatic spices, fresh ingredients, and vibrant dishes. Rice and curry is a staple, often accompanied by an array of side dishes, including vegetables, lentils, and pickles. Seafood is abundant, with dishes like fish curry and prawn sambal being popular, especially along the coast. Street food is a must-try, offering treats like hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), kottu roti (chopped flatbread with vegetables and meat), and samosas.

For those with dietary restrictions, vegetarian and vegan options are plentiful, given the significant Buddhist influence. Many curries and rice dishes are naturally plant-based. However, for gluten-free diets, it's important to check ingredient lists, as soy sauce and other additives might contain gluten.

While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you'll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of local cuisines. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour.

Travellers should exercise caution with street food to avoid stomach issues; choose vendors with good hygiene practices and eat freshly prepared dishes. Sri Lanka's culinary scene is diverse and rich, offering an unforgettable gastronomic journey for every traveller.

Local Customs Travellers to Sri Lanka will find a number of local customs and traditions that enhance the island's charm. Respect for religion is paramount; always remove your shoes and hats before entering temples, and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Pointing with your finger, turning your back to religious statues, or touching someone’s head are considered disrespectful.

Dress Code When visiting Sri Lanka, it's important to dress modestly and respectfully, particularly in religious and rural areas. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for the tropical climate, but ensure shoulders and knees are covered when visiting temples and religious sites. Avoid beachwear outside of coastal areas and resort settings. In urban areas and tourist spots, casual attire is generally acceptable. By adhering to these guidelines, travellers can show respect for local customs and enjoy a comfortable and pleasant stay.

Responsible Dining Avoid consuming endangered species or items harvested unsustainably. Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.

Tipping Your Leader, Local Guide or Driver A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. At the commencement of your tour you will be asked to provide tipping to your guide towards a ‘kitty’, which is then used towards the guide tipping for the services of helpers, hotel staff, restaurants and airport porterage. You will be asked for LKR7000 per person. Please note that this tipping is not for the guide or driver, merely for the guide to tip the services of other local workers during your tour. Tipping towards the kitty is compulsory. Your cooperation in this instance is most appreciated.

Further, tipping for your guide and driver will be collected at the conclusion of their services.  To remove the uncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommend LKR1200 per person per day for your guide and LKR600 per person per day for your driver to be paid in local currency. The amount you wish to contribute is dependent on the services received and at the complete discretion of the guest. Thank you for your understanding.

Peak Travel Times The peak travel times in Sri Lanka are primarily influenced by the island's climate and festive seasons. The most popular time to visit the southwest coast, including popular destinations like Colombo, Galle, and the southern beaches, is from December to March when the weather is dry and sunny.

Additionally, the central highlands, including Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, are popular from January to April, offering cooler temperatures and clear skies. Major festivals, such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April and the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August, also attract many visitors.

Safety and Security Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your tour.

Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you'll have some free time to explore on your own. While your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.

Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

Apps to Download Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour.

Post-Tour Feedback Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.

Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth tour survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your tour has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.

Finishing Point Your finishing hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book additional post-tour accommodation, please do so once you have the final hotel list. We recommend booking a flexible rate that can be changed or cancelled without penalty should there be any unforeseen changes to your booking.

Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.

Departure Details  Following breakfast this morning, you will be transferred by speed boat to Valena International Airport (MLE) in time for your departure flight.

Departure transfers are included as part of your package. You will be collected from your hotel at the appropriate time and transferred to the airport to meet your flight.

If Inspiring Vacations has not provided your international airfares, please ensure you provide your flight details via your Traveller Hub portal no later than 90 days prior to travel so that your transfers can be confirmed.

Depart on your scheduled, overnight flight to Colombo International Airport.

On arrival you will be met by your local guide and transferred to Dambulla which will take approximately 4 hours. The rest of your evening at leisure.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Depart in the morning to explore the stunning Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a World Heritage Site dating back to the 5th century AD. Also known as the 'Lion Rock', it is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the jungle. Following lunch continue on to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa which was once a royal capital of the Sinhalese kingdom and is over 1000 years old. It was chosen as the capital as it was advantageously positioned to safeguard against possible attacks from the southeast, as well as supposedly having fewer mosquitoes! Here you can admire the ruins of the Royal Palace and wander around the Gal Vihara, famous for its splendid carved Buddha statues. Please note: photography is prohibited in parts of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Prohibited areas will be clearly signposted.

After breakfast, visit the Dambulla Rock Temple, where the impressive caves contain over 2000sq metres of painted walls and ceilings which were once gilded by the ancient King to mark his place of worship. You will then travel to Kandy en route visiting a spice garden followed by lunch and check in at your hotel. Continue to the famous Temple of Tooth Relic in the afternoon - Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic and one of the holiest shrines in the Buddhist world. Before dinner relax whilst watching an eclectic cultural show, where performers will dazzle you with ornate costumes and traditional dances.

Today you will travel to the beautiful botanical gardens in Peradeniya, boasting more than 4,000 species of trees, plants, orchids and creepers. Next, a highlight of this tour is a trip to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975 to care for abandoned and wounded elephants. Witness these magnificent creatures in close quarters and see elephants being fed, bathed and trained by the wildlife authorities. This evening enjoy a city tour of Kandy, including the bazaar and arts and crafts centre and a gem museum. Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings and after defending themselves for over three centuries from the Dutch and Portuguese it finally fell to the hands of the British in 1815.

Departing Kandy this morning, breathe in the divine scent of Ceylon tea on a morning tour of a sweeping tea plantation, before participating in a walking tour of Nuwara Eliya, whose idyllic mountainside setting strikingly overlooks its neighbouring valleys, meadows and peaks. A truly tranquil district often referred to as the ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, take in vistas of misty hillsides, peppered with brightly dressed tea pickers en route to your hotel near Yala.

The morning is at leisure before your exciting jeep safari around the magnificent Yala National Game Park, the largest national park in Sri Lanka with a unique ocean front setting. The park is home to elephants, wild boars, buffaloes, bears, deer and crocodiles as well as a number of migratory and indigenous birds. You may even spot a leopard!

Following breakfast, you will arrive in Galle, once the chief port of Ceylon and the centre of the Dutch regime in the 17th century. A city tour lets you discover the majestic Galle Fort and the surrounding historic buildings which reflect the Dutch heritage which once reined the country. Travel north, to Colombo, for your final night.

Tour Reviews

Gwendoline Aldred

Very happy with all the hotels

Tour manager Ernest was 5 star the best!

Susan Garside

All hotels on tour were clean and comfortable with good food and very helpful, friendly staff.

Bridget Tanti

All 4 hotels were lovely and the staff were very efficient and helpful. Improvements may be suggested for Chaarya Resort where the Wifi was poor and, over all, vegetarian meal options were relatively limited.

Jacqueline Goodhew

Lovely clean hotels , great food, polite staff. Excellent overall.

Graham Reeves

Nice hotels used throughout

Rhian Jones

beautiful, good value for money

Leslie Wilkinson

The hotels we stayed ranged from good to excellent. The staff at each hotel were polite, friendly and welcoming. The checking in process was smooth and efficient and we were highly satisfied with the rooms chosen for us. We particularly liked the Amaya Hills Hotel and the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

Monika Wallace

All the hotels were very clean, the service was friendly, excellent and all in beautiful surroundings

Elizabeth Watson

The hotels selected were amazing and surpassed our expectations. Each one was very different with its own character and the locations were perfect. Standard of accomodation was excellent as was the service and the food.

Leanne Puddefoot

All hotels had a very easy check in system, they were all clean and had a good choice of food, my favourite was Amaya Hills, the view and service was amazing and could not fault it.

Bruce Hester

Good choice of 4 star hotels

A mix of tranquillity and beautiful sights, from the balcony and terrace. We would thoroughly recommend this tour and the hotels to anyone. Anyone who complains about any aspect of the whole holiday ought to "get a life". Brandy, our guide, deserves special mention. Throughout the whole trip, he kept everyone together and catered for everyone's needs, much to the annoyance of one couple in particular. He obviously is very experienced, loves his country and its people, and has a wealth of knowledge. He was very informative, had time for everyone and never stopped smiling. Great bloke !!!! The driver and helper were much the same, and you have to admire the way the driver handled that bus, particularly in the mountains, and on busy streets, where, sometimes, it seemed that the population wanted to turn themselves into "bonnet mascots" on his bus. Well done to them all !!!

Each hotel was excellent, all offering a different experience in terms of environment and settings. The quality of food was good and a wide selection of food.

Kate Franklin

All hotels were high standard with excellent service. They also seemed to highly value Mercury guests. We were very impressed with the overall efficiency of the organisation of 'pick ups' and hotel check-ins. Also all drivers were very friendly and courteous as well as being good drivers, with comfortable vehicles, on roads that appeared chaotic at times and very busy.

Marie Southgate

No problems with the hotels

John Cheong

All hotels were good, with large clean rooms; friendly and helpful staff; and with a good choice in the buffet at breakfast and dinner sufficient to suit all tastes.

Joanne Cockram

All very clean and above standard.. Extremely pleased

Really 1st class hotels throughout, the best standard of many escorted tours I have been on.

John Rickman

The first and last hotels on the escorted tour were the best. The Amaya lake the best and we would have liked to see more of it. The mount Lavinia second best.

Bernadette James

All good with Amaya Lake our favourite - excellent facilities.

John Bailey

All hotels were excellent.

Amaya lake and Hills were fantastic hotels with excellent lacations, rooms, service and food. Chandrika Hotel good. The world famous Mount Lavinia Hotel had the wow factor from the outside and lobby area and excellent food

John Ketchell

All 5 hotels used were excellent with good food and generally great service.

Margaret Coe

All very good, excellent rooms, good food, excellent service! Very good swimming pools!!!!!

Philip Walton

All hotels excellent as expected, service couldn’t have been better. Only issue could do with mosquito nets in bedrooms.

Excellent quality hotels, just a shame that so much was crammed into the tour that we didn't always get a chance to fully enjoy them. We often arrived late to the hotel, just in time for evening meal, and then have to set the alarm very early for the following morning.

Terrence Winters

Overall excellent tour only comment would be length of time travelled on some excursions could include refreshment stops and more information regarding clothing and customs etc

Brian Burton

all the hotels we stayed in were excellent, with really friendly staff and nice food

All hotels offered high standards of cleanliness, comfort & food. We loved Amaya Lake with the little lodges & Mount Lavinia was still so Colonial with exceptional cuisine.

Viola Maile

The first 3 hotels were good but the last one - Mount Lavinia was excellent.

All excellent, but it was a pity we always arrived early evening at most of the hotels so we could not usually explore the hotel and grounds properly

Martyn Hall

Bryan Jackson

Upgrades given 2 hotels.

Jayne Avards

All the hotels were excellent - though very little time in each to only eat and sleep whilst touring.

Christine Hughes

I thought whoever had chosen the hotels had chosen them carefully. They were a special experience.

Mixed from good to excellent. Otherwise not bad at all.

Pauline & James Welch

Excellent holiday, many thanks. The standards are much better than might have been expected for the price.

Anthony Meachin

Overall a very good package - with a beach extension. Food and rooms in all the hotels were very good. Mount Lavinia was great.

Elena Zomer

Excellent choice of hotels and restaurants, my first time away with Mercury but definitely not the last, great trip! Thank you :) The hotels were all very beautiful and of very high standards, I have no complaints as they were very clean with lovely big rooms, great staff, delicious buffets etc.

Valerie Donnan

An excellent trip. The tour guide made the whole thing a wonderful experience, he went out of his way to make the trip enjoyable for everyone.

David Woodhead

The tour was first class. Special thanks to our guide and driver.

Linda Copeland

Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and friendly and he made the tour very fun, polite and exciting. Our driver and helper were excellent too. I shall be booking more tours now. Amazing!

Evelyn Mckenzie

I would definitely recommend and use Mercury Holidays again.

Amanda Richards

Just returned from a beautiful holiday in Sri Lanka and The Maldives. Would like to inform you that our escorted holiday in Sri Lanka was made special by one of your guides. Sam Samarakoon. He is an asset to Mercury Holidays & his knowledge of the country is amazing. He is also funny and made sure all our transfers took place without any problems. Great holiday, lovely man.

Gordon Paul

It was our 40th wedding anniversary during the holiday and the recognition of this throughout the trip made this a very special holiday for both of us. Thank you

It was our 40th wedding anniversary during the holiday and the recognition of this throughout the trip made this a very special holiday for both of us. Thank you.

EXCELLENT HOTELS IN SIGIYRIA, KANDY AND BENTOTA. 1ST RATE ROOMS, SERVICE AND STAFF IN ALL 3,

Anthony Sear

Would like to have spent more time in first hotel as very tired after journey and it was in a beautiful place but we had no time to enjoy it. All staff and the service in all hotels were great.

Christine Reeve

all to a good standard apart from the service in the restaurant at governors hotel, mount lavinia .for a prestigious hotel this was somewhat of a let down.

Sarah Sampson

All the hotels were first class.

Jacqueline Shilson

All hotels were absolutely spotlessly clean, food was good and staff friendly. Lovely visits.

Sheila Scholes

In the main the hotels were very good with a good choice of food and comfy beds! The beach stay hotel was very good except that because the air conditioning was on 24\7 the rooms felt damp and sometimes had an unpleasant smell. all they needed was a good blow through of fresh air - maybe whilst being cleaned by the hotel staff. Otherwise a lovely stay.

The executive chef, Aloysious at the Hotel Suda Araliya is excellent!

Pamela Hoult

All the hotels were exceptionally good. The service was good and the food very enjoyable. We couldn't fault anything.

Michael Rainer

All hotels were first class and beyond our expectation. The staff and service was fantastic.

Susan Palmer

All hotels during the escorted tour were first class in every way. Fantastic rooms and facilities, excellent choice of food at all meals.

Sally Kennis

Our second visit to this hotel and they have made a lot of improvements. Most rooms have been upgraded but the best thing is the great, friendly staff. Rooms are large and cleaned everyday with clean sheets, towels etc. We shall certainly return for another relaxing holiday.

Paul Stickley

Hotel staff were excellent. We had to fly home 3 days early due to illness at home, the hotel staff were very helpful.

Carol Turff

All the hotels we stayed at were of a very high standard. We were pleasantly surprised!! Some variations at each hotel of course but overall for the holidays the hotels were good.

The currency in Sri Lanka is the Rupee (LKR) and it is a closed currency. This means it is not possible to buy Sri Lankan money in the UK before you travel. It is important to budget carefully as you should not take any Rupee (LKR) out of Sri Lanka when you depart. There are foreign exchange offices and cash available in most places during your tour. Your tour guide will assist you at the start of your tour with currency exchange. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels and some shops and restaurants; a charge is sometimes added for using them. You can take cash or travellers' cheques (in pounds sterling or another foreign currency) and/or a bank card with you and exchange or withdraw rupees once in Sri Lanka. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in your local currency. It is important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country.

You will need to take some extra money with you to cover any personal purchases, such as souvenirs, laundry and extra drinks and snacks. Approximately £100 - £200 will be sufficient for the duration of the tour.

It is customary to tip your guide and driver. This is at your discretion, but we recommend you allow approximately £5 per person, per day for the driver and assistant and £4 per person, per day for the national guides. It is asked that if you do not tip in the local currency, please do not give coins as these are difficult to exchange. Most guides collect a kitty tip, approximately GBP 15pp for whole tour. Guides usually collect this at the beginning of tour to tip bell boys, porters, trackers and other assistants who will service you throughout the tour.

The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 10, and the maximum will be 25. Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character.
