‘In this world of chaos, nature is our only respite…’

When such words resonate, the true meaning of wildlife and natural habitats come to life. Silent Valley National Park in Palakkad District, Kerala is one such living example of all things beautiful and all things created in this magnificent state. The eerie silence crooning across the corners of this tropical rainforest is one that you may never have imagined. The silence is broken with the chirping of the birds that take you out of your reverie.

#Trivia- It was named a national park only in 1984.

History of Silent Valley National Park

A quaint small space that gained significance because of its evergreen rainforests, and probably the only ones remaining in the country today, Silent Valley gets its name from missing Cicadas that emphasize their presence in the valley.

Many centuries ago, it is believed that, this forest served as a shelter to Sairandhiri (known as Draupadi in Hindu Mythology) and her five husbands (the Pandavas) while escaping from the cruel clutches of their cousins - the Kauravas, in the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that they hid in the realms of this expansive forest where Draupadi disguised herself as Sairandhiri, becoming the maid to a queen named Sudeshna, while living in exile with her family. Hence, it got the name Sairandhrivanam.

It is also believed that the Kunthipuzzha River was named after Kunthi, the mother of the Pandavas. It provides water to the entire forest area.

The British Influence …

It is believed that this gorgeous Western Ghat forest was first explored by a British botanist named Robert Wight in 1857. The Britishers named the place Silent Valley because of the missing sounds of the Cicadas.

#Trivia: Cicadas are noisy creatures that make an unmissable shrill droning sound or noise by vibrating two membranes on their abdomen. This valley supposedly did not have their presence, hence the name.

With many theories that have evolved over the years, Silent Valley National Park in Kerala holds a significant place in the state's vast biosphere.

As it stands today…

Silent Valley National Park in Kerala is protected by the Mannarkkad Plains to the South and the Nigiri Plateau to the North. It is located in the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. It is part of the Nilgiri sub-cluster that comprises more than 6000 sq. km. Western Ghats World Heritage Site, recognized by UNESCO in 2007.

Such is the significance of this last undisturbed South Western Ghats mountain rain forest that boasts of exquisite flora and fauna and expansive vegetation.

From the unending green escapade that captures your heart, to an ecosystem that has stood the test of time, Silent Valley is truly one-of-a-kind. This tropical evergreen wet jungle in India is home to many beautiful species of animals that serve as a reminder of all things God created so stunning and quaint.

#Trivia- The people’s movement to prevent the construction of a dam and a hydroelectric project in the very premise of The Silent Valley National Park was a first significant milestone that garnered the attention of National and International Environmentalists to the forest and eventual intervention from a Prime Minister.

Although it is small in size, the national park has a much bigger impact on the core ecosystem of the Nilgiri Biosphere and the entire state of Kerala. It is said to be one of the last tropical evergreen forests remaining in the Western Ghats. The destruction or even a slight imbalance in the ecosystem would spiral the biosphere downward, creating a bigger disaster.

#Trivia- The Silent Valley National Park is home to the second most threatened Monkey in the world- The Lion-tailed Macaque. Since the population lives and thrives in this particular evergreen forest, their existence needs to be protected and hence every type of deforestation effort or power project is fiercely fought for every time.

Traveller Reviews Of Silent Valley National Park

Flora And Fauna Of Silent Valley National Park

Image Source No information about Silent Valley is complete without a mention of what it’s past visitors felt about their experience here. Which is why, we’ve put down experiences of some

1. Shihab says: “It’s an entry to another world! In this modern busy era it’s a really good place to refresh the mind and soul. Had heard and read a lot about this place, but now got lucky to be here. Everyone who loves nature must visit this place!”

2. Shankar says: “An out of the world experience! A five hour excursion where one gets away from the noise, dust, and disturbances of our everyday lives. Our group of 5 were given a Jeep with Lajju as our forest guide. 3 hours of driving up and down a narrow forest path, bumpy most of the way and still craving for more – that is the journey from the SVNP office at Mannarkad to the Sairandhri watchtower. We saw a Giant Malabar Squirrel and the Lion Tailed Macaques on a humid Monday. While one group of adult Macaques were aloof and seemed to be camera shy, a second group of young kids were more playful, jumping around and coming close to where we could see and photograph them. These apart, thick green tree cover, colorful butterflies and flowers and rain fed streams made us ignore the bumpy ride. Though I didn’t climb the 100 feet watchtower, my wife and kids told me that the view of the forest and the Kunti river from up there were great. I opted out of the two hour, 3 km trek to the Kunti river but my family said that it was great, especially when it started raining very heavily. All praises to the forest guard! The Jeep driver, the Kerala forest officials at the top, and the people at the reception were absolutely helpful and friendly. Would definitely love to go back!”

3. Alex says: “The Silent Valley National Park is a unique and precious piece of geography in India. We were fortunate to see a rich variety of trees, plants and animals, that included, the Lion Tailed Macaques (sometimes fierce, and sometimes sleepy), large slithering snakes, a dozen Malabar Giant Squirrels, a variety of beautiful birds, particularly a darter that flew ‘pilot’ ahead of our Jeep, as if desirous of leading us safely through the densest of forests; Large mushrooms, lizards, butterflies, moths, eagles, woodpeckers – other multi-hued birds added to the spectacular experience. What makes Silent Valley unique? From the beginning of time this 90 square km area of tropical evergreen forest was never populated nor trod upon by man. Now, it offers sights of pristine natural beauty to the present generation.”

“Best Time to Visit in kerala”: Making the Most of the Season

Post-monsoon season (september to march):.

The post-monsoon months of September to March in Kerala are considered the best time to visit Silent Valley National Park. During this period, the weather is relatively mild and pleasant, with cooler temperatures compared to the summer months. The days are generally sunny, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking and wildlife spotting.

Flora and Fauna:

One of the highlights of visiting during the post-monsoon season is the lush greenery and vibrant vegetation that blankets the park. The rains rejuvenate the forests, resulting in lush landscapes, blooming flowers, and increased wildlife activity. It’s an excellent time for birdwatching, as many species are actively breeding and nesting.

Wildlife Sightings:

Wildlife sightings are more frequent during the post-monsoon season, as animals venture out to forage for food and water. Visitors may have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including elephants, deer, langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, and an array of bird species.

Waterfalls:

The post-monsoon season is when the waterfalls within Silent Valley National Park are at their majestic best. The increased rainfall leads to higher water levels, creating spectacular cascades such as the Sairandhri Falls and Kunthipuzha Falls, offering stunning photographic opportunities.

Trekking Conditions:

Trekking conditions are favorable during the post-monsoon season, with clear trails, moderate temperatures, and reduced risk of heavy rains. Trekkers can explore the park’s diverse landscapes, from dense forests to grasslands, and enjoy panoramic views from elevated vantage points.

Pre-Monsoon Season (April to June):

The pre-monsoon months of April to June in Kerala mark the summer season in Silent Valley National Park. While daytime temperatures can be warm and humid, the park experiences occasional showers and cooler evenings.

The summer months bring forth a different aspect of the park’s flora and fauna. While the forests may appear drier compared to the post-monsoon season, it’s a great time to observe certain species of trees in bloom and flowering plants that attract pollinators.

Wildlife Activity:

Wildlife sightings may vary during the summer months, with animals often seeking shade and water sources to beat the heat. Early morning and late afternoon are optimal times for wildlife spotting, especially near water bodies.

Less Crowded:

The pre-monsoon season typically sees fewer visitors compared to the peak tourist season, making it a quieter and more peaceful time to explore the park’s trails and enjoy its natural beauty.

Monsoon Season (July to August):

The monsoon season from July to August brings heavy rainfall to Silent Valley National Park, resulting in lush greenery, swollen rivers, and mist-covered landscapes. While the park remains open, visitors should be prepared for frequent rains and slippery trails.

The monsoon season is a time of rejuvenation for the park’s ecosystems, with plants thriving and wildlife taking shelter amidst the verdant surroundings. It’s a great opportunity to witness the park in its full splendor, but outdoor activities may be limited due to weather conditions.

Photography Opportunities:

Despite the rains, the monsoon season offers unique photography opportunities, with misty landscapes, rain-soaked flora, and dramatic waterfalls creating captivating scenes. Photographers can capture the park’s ethereal beauty during this time.

Limited Activities:

Due to safety concerns and slippery trails, trekking and outdoor activities are generally limited during the monsoon season. Visitors should exercise caution and follow park guidelines if exploring the park during this time.

Overall, the best time to visit Silent Valley National Park is during the post-monsoon season from September to March, when the weather is pleasant, wildlife sightings are common, and the park is at its vibrant best. However, each season offers its own unique experiences, so visitors can choose the time that aligns best with their preferences and interests.

What is Silent Valley National Park and Why is it Important?

Silent Valley National Park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forests and tropical moist evergreen forest in India. It covers an area of 89.52 sq km and is surrounded by a buffer zone of 148 sq km. It was declared as a national park in 1984 and formally inaugurated in 1985. It is also part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the Nilgiri Sub-Cluster World Heritage Site.

Silent Valley National Park has a rich history and significance. It was first explored by the botanist Robert Wight in 1847. The British named it Silent Valley because of the absence of noisy cicadas. Another story attributes the name to the anglicisation of Sairandhri, a character from the Hindu epic Mahabharata who disguised herself as a maid in the forest. A third story refers to the presence of many lion-tailed macaques, which are also known as silent monkeys.

Silent Valley National Park is famous for its conservation movement that saved it from a hydroelectric project in the 1970s. The project would have submerged a large part of the forest and threatened its biodiversity. A public campaign called Save Silent Valley was launched by environmentalists, activists, writers, artists, and celebrities to oppose the project. The campaign gained national and international support and eventually led to the cancellation of the project by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Silent Valley National Park is home to some of the rarest and most endemic species of plants and animals in India. It has over 1000 species of flowering plants, 108 species of orchids, 34 species of mammals, 200 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians, and 128 species of butterflies. Some of the notable species found here are:

Silent Valley

Silent Valley is apparently the last immaculate region of tropical evergreen forest that has fortunately been preserved intact till date. The Silent Valley ecosystem, acclaimed as one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots, spreads over 8, 952 hectares of forestland on the Nilgiris plateau and is enclosed by mountains, some of which rise up to an altitude of more than 2000 meters. An “ecological island” with a comparatively uninterrupted evolutionary history that dates back to at least 50 million years is perceptible in its optimal degree of flora and fauna here.  Silent Valley National Park constitutes the nucleus of the Nilgiri International Biosphere Reserve, besides being an ingredient of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site under apprehension by UNESCO. And, it boasts of its very many pristine valleys, infinite grasslands, winding hills, never-ending rivers, undulating slopes, flourishing greenery and the dense forests. The park is acknowledged as the only one of its kind, known for the distinctive herbs and flora, and of course goes without saying the characteristic wildlife that delight in their habitat. Enclosed on all sides by Reserve forests and other forest divisions, the Silent Valley Park is a haven for any wildlife adventurist and is rightly quoted as “Sairandhrivanam” meaning ‘the forest in the valley’. Rare and new-fangled biological species continue to be discovered from this unique National Park even today.

About Silent Valley

Silent Valley National park  in Kerala is one of the last remaining still preserved bio diverse region not just in India but world. It is now a protected National park spanning an are of almost 240 square kilometers. Park is composed of evergreen forests and is surrounded by the Kunti River. The National Park provides spectacular views of the Kundali hills which can be found at the Western Ghats.

Story goes that it was called Silent Valley because when it was discovered by Robert Eight the British botanist, apparently due to the fact there were no noisy Cicadas found here. Other stories from longer ago tell the story of Sairandhri, an Hindu queen, spending some 14 years here in exile. Not a bad place to spend 14 years, the valley and surrounding areas have a lot to recommend them. Not least the fact they’ve been invited to apply for membership of UNESCO as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

The valley is home to large populations of endangered species, and is also an extremely bio diverse place because of the forested hills and rich valleys.  World's  largest population of lion-tailed macaques is found here.

Best place for accommodation in the nearby town of Mukkali and Palakkad is another option . There is an Ayurveda resort nearby at Perinthalmanna. Camping inside national park is not allowed even with prior organization, and if you’re intending to do any trekking within the park it is essential to hire one of the park guides. Visitors without a guide are not allowed.

The park is heavily ‘eco’ focused and has an ‘eco’ shop, stocking indigenous tribal artefacts, (not to be found elsewhere!), as well as some more traditional gifts and supplies. Silent Valley is only 60 Kms from Coimbatore and 190 Kms from Ernakulam. An alternate name for it is “Sairandhrivanam”, after Sairandhiri which is the secret identity of Draupadi, who was the wife of the Pandavas. Legend dictates that the Pandavas had taken shelter here.

For those wanting to spend longer, it’s possible to pay for an overnight expedition for 1 to 3 nights. This can be organized from the website, and should be planned some time before travel to the area. Visitors to the valley should not miss out on the views from the watch tower and museum. Offering magnificent views of the park from up a flight of 300 steps, it’s possible to spot many animals, trees, people and features from this vantage point and it should not be missed.

Tourist can take an elephant safari to explore the park and can admire the view of the forests from the watchtowers.

Formation of Silent Valley National park

A widespread protest movement had given birth to the National Park. During the 1950s the state government had taken up the agenda of constructing a dam across the river Kunti to generate electricity. However, keeping in mind, the extent of damage such a project would cause to the environment many Keralites and environmentalists all over the country started to protest against this decision with the help of the media. Indira Gandhi, who had been the Prime Minister during this time also approved of this protest. This led to the setting up of the Silent Valley National Park in 1984.

Silent Valley National Park, Palakkad Overview

The Silent Valley National Park, with its lush green forests and beautiful views of the rich flora and fauna, is a popular destination for nature as well as wildlife lovers all across the globe. Spread across an area of 89 square kilometres, the Silent Valley National Park is located in the Kundali Hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala in southern India. With its long, detailed history and the unique status of a rainforest, this national park is indeed a sight to visit. The well-planned Safari and the beautiful stop-overs around the park only make a trip to this part of Kerala more worthwhile.

A visit to this national park holds prominent significance for traveller and nature enthusiasts as this site is the last representative virgin tract of tropical evergreen forests in India. Though smaller in size when compared to the other national parks in India, what set the Silent Valley National Park apart from all other similar sites is the Sylvan environment that the region boasts of, along with its lofty and majestic peaks and the several rivers that run through its length. The numerous plant and animal species that can be found here are indeed worth mentioning. The park has a strong faunal and floral population, with many of the endangered species residing here blissfully, unharmed by the outer environment. The ones who are most commonly seen here are the elephant, tiger, lion-tailed macaque, gaur, wild pig, panther and sambar. The vegetation of this park is the tropical, moist evergreen kind. It is also almost next to possible to ignore the presence of the River Kunthi, which descends from the Nilgiri Hills and then passes through this region, enchanting visitors with its crystal clear water, devoid of any impurities.

Historically it is a paradigm of people's movement to protect the forest. In 1914, Silent Valley forests were declared as Reserved Forest. It was declared as National Park in 1984 and formally inaugurated in the year 1985. Till 1921, Silent Valley was part of the South Malabar Forest Division with headquarters at Nilambur. In 1921, it came under the control of the Palakkad Forest Division and managed so until 1988.   Silent Valley was called 'Sairandhrivanam' as it was the place where Sairandhiri (the secret identity donned by Panchali, from the epic Mahabharata) hid along with her five husbands, the Pandavas, during their exile. The Kunthippuzha River which feeds the entire forest was named after Kunthi, the mother of the Pandavas. Along with them, one can view over 1000 species of flowering plants and another 110 species of orchids here. Over 400 species of moths and 200 species of butterflies have been cataloged here. The Silent Valley core zone has National Park status while the buffer area has Reserve forest status. The headquarters of both ranges are at Mukkali and the Divisional office is at Mannarkkad. The National Park along with the buffer zone is a part of Nilambur Elephant Reserve declared under Project Elephant. Silent Valley

Silent Valley National Park (40 km northwest of Mannarkkad) The 89.52 sq.km national park is believed to be the sole surviving bit of evergreen forest in the Sahya Ranges. The peculiarity of the Silent Valley Forest is that it is even devoid of the chirping of cicadas’. Vehicular transport is possible only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km from the park.

The rest of the way has to be covered by foot, up to the source of Kunthipuzha, which flows through the valley before merging into the Bharathapuzha River. The closest to a virgin forest in the entire Western Ghats, the Silent Valley National Park is home to India’s last substantial stretch of tropical evergreen forests. It’s difficult terrain and remoteness shelters a large number of wild animals. Permitting authority: Asst. Wildlife Warden, Silent Valley National Park, Mukkali. Ph: 04924-253225 / 8589895652
