There’s a new option for booking travel that could help you save some money on everyday expenses, and it’s from a spot you might not have expected: Walmart.

The retail giant has launched a travel portal in partnership with Expedia.

Those who subscribe to Walmart+ can book activities, flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation rentals and travel packages. In return, they’ll earn Walmart Cash that can be used when shopping with the store.

Though it may not be the first choice for avid travelers who want to take advantage of travel loyalty programs, the portal is a way for your travels to help you offset expenses in your daily life; usually, this is done by using strategic everyday credit card spending to help you earn travel rewards.

This new travel portal is also a way travelers carrying The Platinum Card® from American Express can get more value out of their card and its $695 annual fee: Cardmembers can receive a statement credit to cover the Walmart+ membership fee. Terms apply.

How do you use the Walmart travel portal?

Walmart+ members can access the company’s new travel portal at WalmartPlusTravel.com. It’s also available through the member benefits section of the Walmart+ app.

You can use the site to book numerous aspects of your trip. Because the site is powered by Expedia, you’ll be able to access the online travel agency’s vast network of hotels and vacation rentals. The site has access to more than 900,000 properties (including hotels, homes, apartments, etc.), as well as more than 500 airlines globally and more than 100 rental car companies.

You can also book activities using the Walmart travel portal.

Earning Walmart Cash for travel

A key benefit for Walmart+ members booking a trip through WalmartPlusTravel.com is the ability to earn Walmart Cash.

Members will earn:

5% Walmart Cash on hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals and activities.

2% Walmart Cash on flights.

If you’re booking a vacation package, you’ll receive a blended Walmart Cash rate: 2% for the flight portion of your trip, 5% for the accommodations element.

Once you confirm a booking, any Walmart Cash you earn will appear in your wallet. It will become available 30 days after you complete travel. You can apply it to future purchases or cash out in the store.

Using WalmartPlusTravel.com

To start using WalmartPlusTravel.com , head to the homepage and sign in using your Walmart+ credentials.

Let’s say you're hoping to take a family of four from Washington, D.C., to Rome in September 2023. Start by plugging in desired flights, like you would on any booking site.

walmart travel money

Because it’s an online travel agency, the results turn up options on numerous airlines. You can see itinerary options aboard Delta Air Lines and Air France, among others.

Each itinerary option also shows how much you'd earn in Walmart Cash (again, 2% for flights). The cheapest option, $946, comes to $3,784 for a family of four and would earn $75.64 in Walmart Cash.

walmart travel money

The site also points out times in which you might be able to save money by booking a vacation package, instead of choosing your trip elements a la carte.

Now that your flights to Rome are set, you need a place to stay when you get there.

Through the Walmart travel portal, you can put in “Rome” or even a landmark in your search terms. For example, let’s say you want to stay as close to the Pantheon as possible. Simply plug that landmark in and search.

walmart travel money

In the search results, there's a rental property option with a loft that sleeps six people and is just steps away from the Pantheon. This property would set you back $447 per night, which means a total of $2,690 for your five-night stay (including taxes and fees). In this case, you would earn 5% Walmart Cash on the property rental — a total of $134.51 for the stay.

walmart travel money

That means for just the stay and flights, you’d have $210.15 to spend (or cash out) at Walmart after arriving home.

Is Walmart travel good?

The best part about WalmartTravelPlus.com is the ability to earn money you can apply to your purchases at the store. That means earning cash back is simple and directly applicable to your everyday shopping. Plus, you could maximize your cash back by charging your booking to a travel credit card that earns points or a cash-back credit card that will accelerate your cash-back amount.

As always with online travel agencies , note that flight changes can be difficult, as is earning hotel points or using elite status benefits. However, it could provide a particularly handy return on investment when booking a rental property that’s not part of a major hotel loyalty program.

This means that if your hotel was $500 and the flight was $350, you could get $42.50 in Walmart Cash.

Travel booking is powered by Expedia Group’s White Label Template technology. This gives Walmart+ members access to over 900,000 properties, over 500 airlines, 100+ car rental companies and thousands of activities around the world. Expedia will also handle all travel-related customer service requests via live agents and self-service options.

“We’re bringing together the ultimate savings membership and vacation booking site to deliver a first-ever travel-focused benefit for Walmart+ members,” said Venessa Yates, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+.

“Combined with our other benefits — including free delivery, streaming and savings on fuel — we’re creating a membership that saves customers time and money, whether they’re at home or having fun at their favorite vacation destination.”

Walmart+ members can access travel perks through their member benefits hub in the Walmart app or WalmartPlusTravel.com After booking is confirmed, your Walmart Cash will appear in your Walmart wallet. Walmart Cash will be available 30 days after travel and can be used on future Walmart purchases or cashed out in a store.

Walmart+ Members Can Now Save More with Walmart Rewards

By Chris Cracchiolo , Senior Vice President and General Manager, Walmart+

Aug. 24, 2022

Walmart+ Rewards Mobile Screen Showing Walmart Rewards Center

Press Center

At Walmart, everything we do is in service of the customer. Sam Walton used to say, “Give customers what they want, and a little more.” This is our ambition with Walmart+ — to offer a suite of benefits and services that are additive for our members. And as the needs of our members evolve, we evolve right alongside them. Because a relentless focus on ‘a little more’ is our path to unlocking exponential value.

We know our customers and members are mindfully managing their budgets these days. That’s why we’re excited to introduce a new member perk that delivers compounding value: Walmart Rewards .

Walmart Rewards is a new and easy way for Walmart+ members to earn additional savings toward future Walmart purchases. Let’s say after a few shopping trips or online orders, a member has accumulated $10 in Walmart Rewards. When they apply those savings at checkout, what was previously a $25 basket now only costs $15.

Here’s how it works today:

  • As members search for products on Walmart.com or the Walmart app, they’ll see an option to add rewards starting with hundreds of bestselling items, from groceries to household goods to pet care and beyond. This is on top of Walmart’s everyday low prices.
  • Members can bank their digital rewards in the Walmart wallet in the app and online and use them to save on future purchases in stores and online. These new item-specific rewards, powered by the Ibotta Performance Network , are available exclusively for Walmart+ members, starting today. We’re focusing first on providing rewards on items purchased by our members, and over time, we’ll continue to expand the program to deliver new ways to earn rewards.

Here are a few more reasons we know our members will love Walmart Rewards:

  • It's free and easy to use. No need to download a separate app or even sign up. No more fumbling with paper coupons. Members just sign into their Walmart+ account on Walmart.com or in the Walmart app, clip eligible rewards, purchase the items and watch the earnings rack up.
  • It works any way members choose to shop. Whether they do most of their shopping in-store or online, members can take advantage of digital offers to earn Walmart Rewards.
  • Members can redeem the balance at checkout. If shopping in-store, Walmart members can scan the Walmart Pay QR code and tap “Use Walmart Rewards” to deduct the balance from their bill. If shopping online, they can simply do this when they check out.
  • Walmart Rewards is not static. This opens the door to endless earning possibilities for members in the future. We’ll continue to build new ways to reward member loyalty within the Walmart Rewards program.

We’ve always been committed to saving members time and money, and with Walmart Rewards, we’re rewarding members for shopping with us through added savings on the items they want and need most. It’s a little more that adds up to a lot.

Note: Item rewards will also be featured in Sponsored Products. Learn more about the unified member experience from Walmart Connect.

Walmart+ Travel is my go-to for booking trips — get extra savings during Walmart+ Week

Planning a last-minute summer vacation or thinking ahead to a fall getaway book now and get 20% back in walmart cash. plus, travel must-haves..

I love to travel. I’ve been to 29 countries and have lived in cities, jungles, lake towns and beach communities. These days, I book all my own travel. DIYing a vacation is not only blissfully easy thanks to online services, but it’s also my ticket to saving lots of money. I recently discovered that Walmart+ Travel takes easy and affordable to the next level, and it’s become my new go-to booking platform. Now is the perfect time to discover it for yourself, because Walmart+ Week is here, and the retailer is celebrating by giving 20% back in Walmart Cash to anyone with a Walmart+ membership who books with Walmart+ Travel through June 23. That’s up to 4x the amount you’d usually get! (Read about all of the Walmart+ Week perks here.)

Walmart+ Travel is powered by Expedia to provide a seamless (and safe) booking experience with deals galore. I started my planning by looking up beach options in Mexico for the summer — it's close to the United States and packed with some of the most beautiful turquoise waters and white-sand playas . Walmart+ let me sort hotels by category — near the water, family-friendly and last-minute deals, just for starters. In a few clicks, I found a 10/10 hotel in Playa del Carmen that starts at just $44 a night (more than 30% off) for a Queen room with air conditioning in a prime location uptown. For a more luxe experience, Walmart+ Travel offered the beloved Grand Hyatt in central downtown starting from $220 a night (a discount of $40 per night, which was much lower than the prices I was seeing on major competitor sites!) for a gorgeous King room with access to one of the most decadent pool areas and spas in all of Mexico.

Walmart+ Membership

There's never been a better time to sign up for a Walmart+ membership. In addition to the usual perks, you'll get access to the store's special members-only event through June 23. You don't want to miss out, right?

With the Walmart+ Travel platform, I can see exactly what I'm getting thanks to crystal clear photography and a comprehensive list of every single amenity. In just a few clicks, it’s booked. Plus, Walmart+ Travel takes care of all my travel needs, with an easy-to-use flight search tool, a platform for quickly booking car rentals and a search engine that helps me find activities to book once I get to my destination. This feature is the closest you’re going to get to having an actual travel agent: you can search entire vacation packages by simply plugging in your destination and dates. It'll find you cruises, all-inclusive resort vacations and more.

Through June 23, Walmart+ members receive 20% Walmart Cash on hotels, car rentals and activities, plus 5% Walmart Cash on flights. That's 4x the usual rate making this week the perfect time to book that last-minute summer vacay or plan ahead for fall or holiday travel. For example, if your hotel costs $400 and the flight $300, you'd get $95 in Walmart Cash. Your Walmart Cash will be listed as "pending" in your account until your travel is complete. You can use Walmart Cash on future Walmart purchases or redeem for it cash back. There's no expiration date on your Walmart Cash. Keep in mind that your travel must be completed by December 31, 2024.

Not a member yet? There are plenty of totally worth-it perks to being a Walmart+ member . You get free delivery from your local store (that includes groceries), free shipping with no order minimum, a complementary Paramount+ subscription, savings on fuel at 14,000 gas stations nationwide, and early access to discounts and sales events. As if that’s not enough, during Walmart+ Week, you also get additional perks like one free Express delivery (two hours!), three months of Walmart+ InHome and two times the amount of fuel savings . That’s 20 cents off per gallon, so get that membership and fill up your tank stat. Did somebody say road trip?

No matter how you slice it, there's a lot of savings to be had as a Walmart+ member, during Walmart+ Week and beyond. Given how much I travel, I'll be using my extra Walmart Cash to make my traveling experience a little more seamless. These Walmart products can definitely help.

Travelhouse Hardside Luggage, 3-Piece Set

If your current bags have seen better travel days, it's time to level up. Lightweight and durable, each piece of this bestselling Travelhouse three-piece luggage set suitcase has 360° silent spinner wheels, so you can easily maneuver around the airport and book it during those tight layovers. Inside, you'll find zippered dividers to keep your belongings secure and, for peace of mind, the suitcases come with secure TSA locks. too. Oh, and did we mention you can choose from 10 colors?

Time and Tru Mesh Beach Tote

It's easy to bring any old bag to the beach, but hear me out: one that's designed for the beach is so much better. This one by Time and Tru is made of water-resistant mesh that won't trap as much sand — it also has four pockets for storing your sunnies, phone, wallet and other small stuff, plus a roomy main compartment for your towel, hat and book. Game-changer.

Owala FreeSip Stainless Steel Water Bottle, 32-Ounce

Single use plastics? Yuck. Water that loses its cool when you're out in the sun? No, thank you. This Owala insulated water bottle is essential when traveling. It keeps your water ice cold for 24 hours, so you'll be hydrated and refreshed all day.

Cloud Slide Sandals

EVA sandals are such a super alternative to flip-flops, in in my opinion. This pair of waterproof Cloud Slides offers spongy cushioning and shock absorption that protects your feet much better than those paper-thin thongs, plus more ankle stability. I wear mine as all-day walking shoes.

Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Australian brand Blue Lizard consistently puts out some of the best sun protection on the market. This reef-safe, fragrance-free lotion is nonsticky, nongreasy and water resistant for up to 80 minutes — it's also made with sensitive skin in mind.

Livhil Waterproof Dry Bag & Cell Phone Bag, Set of 2

If you're headed to a day at the waterpark, this waterproof fanny pack is a lifesaver. You can keep your phone and all the contents of your wallet in here, secured to your body, and not worry about anything getting lost or destroyed. The pack of two also comes with waterproof phone protectors to wear around your neck.

Die Caprie Turkish Towel

Here's a beach hack I've discovered while traveling: bring a Turkish towel. The 100 percent organic cotton towel is designed to be super absorbent but is super-thin, so it saves space when you're packing. It's as soft as a blanket and lightweight too. I'll never go back to regular beach towels.

Walmart's bestselling $80 travel bag is currently on sale for only $17 during a flash deal

TheStreet aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

It's almost time to start thinking about your holiday travel plans , and whether that includes a plane ticket, train ride, or a road trip, you'll definitely need quality luggage to get you by. Some people prefer hard suitcases while others prefer to pack light with just a weekend bag or backpack.

Although you can't go wrong with either option, Walmart is offering a flash deal on the originally $80 Cshidworld Travel Bag that's now only $17. This 79% discount is too good to pass up and to make it even better, the bag is eligible for free, next-day shipping, depending on your location. That means it's guaranteed to be here by the holidays, and can even be used months in advance for other weekend trips. Not to mention it would make a great gym bag, too.

Cshidworld Travel Bag, $17 (was $80) at Walmart

This 24-inch travel bag features tons of pockets and compartments to make organizing your belongings easier and more convenient. No more sifting through the entire bag to find the one thing you're looking for. It has three internal and four external pockets and has a total capacity of 37 liters, which is enough to hold clothes, cosmetics, toiletries, and other small essentials like your phone, wallet, and keys. The spacious main compartment includes a dry pocket for clean clothes and a zippered, waterproof PVC-lined pocket to keep wet and dirty clothes separate.

Related: Walmart's bestselling $270 outdoor gazebo is on sale for only $150 ahead of Labor Day weekend

It's available in dark blue, light blue, black, and pink, and all colorways are on sale at the same low price. Plus, more than 400 Walmart shoppers have given the bag a five-star rating, and one person described it as "spacious and wonderful."

"It's so much more roomier than expected," another reviewer wrote. "Because of the sturdy lightweight material, you can really pack a lot and it's still not too heavy to carry. I have used it several times since buying it. I love it! And of course, I like the pink color!"

The Cshidworld Travel Bag won't be on sale for much longer since it's a flash sale, but all colors are currently still in stock, so take your pick (or order multiple) while they're on sale for only $17 each.
