Collette History & Story

History Back in 1918, when Jack Collette started the company, the first tour to ever run was made up of a jitney bus of travelers that left Boston, Massachusetts headed for Florida. This three-week adventure cost just $61.50! At that time few could have foreseen that nearly 100 years later, that same company would be taking guests from around the world to all seven continents. Today Collette is now a global company. With offices in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, its team of dedicated experts can cater to the tastes of distinct groups of travelers. Collette's diverse travel collection features comprehensive land tours, river cruises, rail journeys, small group tours, city stays, and a variety of travel styles and tour types to meet every traveler's needs.  We seamlessly handle the details - all our guests need to do is enjoy the journey. Awards Collette has been honored with Travel Weekly's 21st annual Readers' Choice Awards (RCAs) on December 13, 2023. Collette was thrilled to take home two awards at the RCAs this year: Best Tour Operator for the US and Best Tour Operator for Canada.

The Travelling Well Experience

Each guest that travels with us deserves a memorable and fulfilling travel experience. And we intend to continue to deliver on that promise. Your health, well-being, and enjoyment remain our top focus — just as they have been since we started in 1918.

Our team consults with health and security experts all around the world to ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience. Let’s take a look into the steps we’re taking for you.

Cancel for Any Reason Waiver

Our Travel Protection Plan financially protects you in the event you need to cancel or move your trip to a different date. Learn more here

Pre-Tour Health Screenings

We will ask all travellers to complete a wellness declaration form before joining their tour.

Private Sedan Service

Your ride to and from the airport will be stocked with fresh water for every pickup and all surfaces will be disinfected daily and after every passenger.

Specific details will vary by airline, but standard operations typically include flight attendants wearing masks, sanitizing all surfaces between flights and physical distancing. For links to major airlines, head to the bottom of the page, or visit your airline’s website for specific information.

Smaller Groups

Tours will operate with a number of empty seats to allow guests to space out for a more comfortable experience.

Your Tour Manager

We have employed new and enhanced hygiene & physical distancing protocols for tour managers. They are local experts and highly trained to handle a variety of unexpected situations — including illnesses and emergencies. They are also available 24/7 for guests throughout the tour should any situation arise.

Use of Face Coverings

Face coverings will be included with your pre-tour documents and will be required throughout many experiences on tour including the motor coach and air travel.

Motor Coach

All surfaces will be sanitized often, including regular cleaning of high-touch areas with disinfecting wipes. Hand sanitizer will be available at all times and drivers will wear protective gear when appropriate.

On-Tour Experiences

We work closely with our local partners to ensure adequate physical distancing during meals, experiences, and sightseeing. Guests may be rotated in smaller sub-groups when necessary.

On-Tour Insurance Coverages

When you purchase our Travel Protection Plan, you’ll have access to telehealth services should you need it, plus you’re covered on tour for emergency assistance, baggage loss, trip interruption, medical expenses, and more. Learn more here

Self-Screening

We will ask all travellers to monitor their health throughout their tour, with protocols in place in the event someone becomes ill.

Specific protocols will vary from destination to destination, hotel to hotel. Overall, rooms and areas like restaurants, fitness centres, etc. will be deep-cleaned regularly, with rooms disinfected thoroughly between guests. High-traffic areas like lobbies and elevators will be cleaned hourly.

After you get home, you’ll be able to share your opinions of your tour experience, allowing us to constantly improve for the benefit of future guests.

Sustainability

We’re proud of our long legacy of giving back, especially to our local communities. Today, we are driving that legacy forward by continuing to be more responsible across four focus areas: People, Community, Planet, and Travel. People: Our employees are at the heart of our responsibility platform; pushing for change, creating priorities, and generously giving their time to support programs and initiatives. Community: We seek to support our local communities and those across the world through grants and initiatives that focus on ending hunger and improving education outcomes, especially among children Planet: Because our industry relies heavily on fossil fuels and contributes to global climate change, we feel it is important for us as a company to address our impact on the environment. Travel: We want to make responsible decisions when it comes to traveling to destinations across the world. This includes supporting and promoting local culture, heritage, and economies. These are the initiatives that this operator has in place to make your adventure more sustainable: Sustainability Programs - Invests a percentage of revenue back into community projects or sustainability projects  - We host community-building or sustainability projects for tour-goers to partake in Reducing Carbon Emissions - Has a program in place and are working towards becoming fully carbon neutral Supporting Destinations and Local Communities - Hires local guides - Brings our passengers to locally run restaurants & businesses Animal Welfare - Does not offer any tours that include elephant riding - Does not offer any tours that use animals for entertainment - We avoid places that sell/eat parts of endangered animals on tour Company Culture - Hosts community-building or sustainability projects for staff to partake in - Educates people about sustainability through our marketing

Questions & Answers

How can i plan for shore landings.

Special clothing is required for the shore landings (Antarctica, Galapagos); please refer to your predeparture documents for important details.

Are attractions always available?

Access to some attractions or Collette Foundation sites may be affected by the observance of holidays, weather conditions or other circumstances. As a result, the days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour. Boat rides are weather permitting. Some attractions may not be available during the "off-season" months. When attractions are unavailable, other similar attractions will be substituted. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

When can I check into my hotel?

Normal check-in time is late afternoon in most locations. Due to early arrival times into some cities, rooms may not always be available for immediate check-in.

What is the difference between a twin room and a double room?

In certain countries, hotel rooms tend to be smaller than U.S. standard accommodations. A double room is designed to accommodate two people, but may not have two separate beds. A twin-bedded room has two separate beds of any size, and is the type most commonly utilized.

How can I be best prepared for the pacing and physical requirements on a Collette tour?

Tour pacing varies by itinerary, and each destination's sightseeing and activities are unique. Pacing is subject to personal interpretation. At Collette, we do include the best a destination has to offer, enhancing your overall tour experience. For overnight pacing of a tour, please refer to the "Accommodations" section on each tour page and on the tour map. These describe the number of nights you will stay in each hotel during your tour. The day-by-day descriptions will provide additional detail about the number of activities included in each day. The Tour Activity Level Ranking is featured on each tour itinerary in a circle. The definition of each activity level is listed here. If you have additional questions regarding a specific tour, please inquire at time of reservation. For your comfort, we recommend packing comfortable walking shoes so you can fully enjoy every aspect of your tour. Level 1: At a very leisurely pace, this tour involves minimal physical activity, such as climbing some stairs, boarding a motorcoach, and walking from the hotel reception area to hotel rooms and dining areas. Level 2: This tour requires average physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk reasonable distances, possibly over uneven ground and cobblestoned streets. Level 3: This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs or on uneven walking surfaces should be expected. Level 4: To truly experience the program and destination, you need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer walking tours, walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs and periods of standing. Some of the touring days may be longer, with select included activities occurring later in the evening. Level 5: This tour is very active, requiring participants to be physically fit to fully enjoy all the experiences. This itinerary has more strenuous activities which may include such things as: extensive walking tours, transfers over uneven and dusty terrain, high altitudes, early morning departures, late night activities, or extreme temperatures. All conditions do not apply to all days, so please read the itinerary carefully and speak to one of our travel counselors to determine if this tour is right for you. We recommend this program to individuals who are physically fit. Unfortunately, this tour is not appropriate for individuals who use either walkers or wheelchairs. If this trip is not ideally suited for you, our travel counselors can help determine the perfect trip for you.

Where do I meet my Tour Manager?

Your tour will begin at your first hotel. The Tour Manager will make contact with you at the hotel and will provide details relating to your tour. The hotel's address and phone number will be included in your documents.

Is there a lot of walking on tour?

We pride ourselves on bringing travelers the very best experiences a destination offers. Our itineraries include many activities and may consist of walking on uneven terrain or significant walking at times. Some of the most unique sightseeing can mean accessing locations that restrict motorcoaches, especially in historic areas. Some hotels/lodges in remote locations may not have elevators. For your comfort, we recommend bringing walking shoes.

Can children travel on a Collette tour?

Children over the age of 5 may travel on a Collette tour accompanied by an adult. Child land rates are valid for ages 5-12, sharing a room with two full-paying adults.

Beautiful national park landscape

They have 6 broad classifications for travel style: Classic, Explorations, Spotlights, River Cruise, Faith, and Impact Travel:

1. Classic Collette Tours - This is what they call their Flagship collection, group tours that make the postcard come to life. Visit all the must see sites, enjoy cultural experiences, all with a professional and knowledgeable guide, there to help make your travel as seamless as possible. Groups are on the larger side

2. Explorations - These tours are about going deeper, meeting locals, and getting off the beaten path. “Authenticity” is a big word for Collette Explorations. You’ll experience the destination in a smaller group, an average of 18 people, allowing for access to more local experiences not available to larger groups. Classic sites will also be included in your itinerary, but the focus is mostly on unique experiences.

3. Spotlights - Have a shorter amount of time and don’t want to miss anything? Collette Spotlight tours are designed to maximize your city stay or short getaway experience. These are primarily walking tours, packed with sightseeing, historical and cultural information, but with some downtime as well. Typically these tours are between 5-9 days.

4. River Cruise - A very popular mode of travel, particularly for 50+ travelers, river cruising is ideal for those seeking a leisurely vacation, unpacking only once, enjoying gliding by beautiful sites and participating in various guided shore excursions. Collette river cruises go around the world, including China, Egypt, and Europe.

5. Faith - For those travelers interested in visiting religious sites, Collette has a group of tours dedicated to faith based travel. Visit world famous icons and learn their ancient histories.

Collette Faith tours visit everything from grand churches to the humble beginnings of the three major world religions in the Holy Land. Tours are history based with an emphasis on finding deeper spiritual significance and meaning. They also have trips to the Oberammergau Passion Play .

6. Impact Travel - Being a responsible traveler is an important component on all Collette tours, however if you’re seeking to do more to give back, their Impact Tours are a great way to do so. Sightsee with a purpose as you assist with local initiatives, volunteering among the community, helping in classrooms, and protecting local wildlife.

Staying overnight in an Irish castle like Old-World royalty…feeling the cool waters of the Great Barrier Reef envelop you as you snorkel in its turquoise paradise…or rolling dough with an Italian chef to make the perfect pizza. It’s not just about all the iconic spots that will make for the best photos, it’s about diving into another world that makes for the best memories.

Go Product Team!

Our product experts are probably on the road right now — scoping out the best of our worldwide destinations. They go, take it all in, and find the moments they love best. Those are the moments they create for you. Those experiences and sights comprise each itinerary and make each one extra-special. Best of all, you don’t have to plan a thing. You just need to choose which itinerary best suits you.

Travel is social by nature. Guided travel is extra social. Meet a cast of characters: your fellow travelers, tour manager, driver, local guides and more. Go Worry-Free!

Your peace of mind is the most important thing to us. And that starts with our roundtrip home to airport sedan service. Forget taxis, airport fees, or public transportation. Why Travelers Love Collette Explorations?

Why would our advisors bring Collette Explorations into the mix of options when planning a trip with our clients?  We hear comments like:

— In the past I’ve traveled independently, but for this destination I think I may want a safety net.

— I avoid escorted tours because they are big groups on big buses and they are fast paced; too bad there aren’t small groups

— I like to learn about the culture, meet locals, and have off beat experiences.

— I prefer centrally located hotels that convey the local vibe and in an area with cafes and evening options to explore.

— I like having some structure when I travel, but I also appreciate some free time to soak up the unexpected joys of traveling.

— I’m always trying to find the most authentic places to eat and drink, but it’s so hard with so many options to choose from!

The President and CEO of Collette say that “Every Collette tour was designed with the goal of getting you closer to the culture of your destination. Explorations travelers get to go places larger groups often can’t, and they get to learn from experts who live there.”

If this sounds like your style of adventuring, Collette Explorations may be a fit for you! Let’s talk!

10 Amazing Small Group Travel Tours To Experience In 2023

about collette travel

Small group tours offer a number of significant benefits. For starters, you can visit smaller, unique places that simply can’t accommodate large groups. Likewise, you can also participate in immersive experiences that aren’t possible for large groups due to their unwieldy size.

If you’ve been thinking about that type of tour lately, you need to know about Small Group Explorations from Collette, the tour operator with a smooth, hassle-free way to travel.

If you aren’t familiar with Collette yet, the family-owned tour operator, which was founded in 1918, offers more than 160 tours on all seven continents in five distinct travel styles — including small group touring and river cruises. Perhaps the best part is that the tour operator’s approach calls for treating each traveler “as a valued friend” allowing them to “sit back and let us handle all the details so you can have the time of your life,” Collette explains.

“Take the path less traveled with Collette’s Small Group Explorations tours: Delve into engaging, immersive experiences; settle into culturally reflective accommodations; savor authentic, local cuisine; and absorb a destination’s true culture with more built-in free time,” continues Collette . “On a small group tour of 14 to 24 travelers, you won’t be part of the crowd — you’ll be an integral part of a cultural expedition. Embark on a small group tour and discover the heart of a destination like never before.”

Here’s what you need to know about 10 of Collette’s most popular Small Group Explorations tours.

Collette Small Group Tour- Montana

1. Montana: Exploring Big Sky Country

Yellowstone and glacier national parks.

“Step outside, take a deep breath, and look toward the mountains — you’re in the Big Sky Country of Montana, now,” Collette explains. “Montana, a land of wilderness, adventure, and beauty, is waiting for you.”

Highlights of the tour, which lasts 11 days and 10 nights, include exploring both the Northern and Southern Loops of Yellowstone National Park, visiting Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs, and seeing Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon. You’ll also visit Helena, Montana, the “Queen City of the Rockies,” as well as take a cruise on the Missouri River through the “Gates of the Mountains” and spend time in the mountain town of St. Mary Village before exploring Glacier National Park.

Unique Experiences

The tour, which begins in Bozeman, Montana, also offers some choices. You’ll have a chance to either visit the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center or explore the exhibits at the C.M. Russell Art Museum. Memorably, the trip also includes a choice of either a white-water rafting trip or a more leisurely trip down a scenic route along the Flathead River.

Rates for Montana: Exploring Big Sky Country begin at $5,599 per person.

Collette Small Group Tour- Southern Africa

2. Wilderness Of Southern Africa

Safari by land & water.

“Journey through southern Africa, from its wild plains and dry woodlands to rivers and lakes, on a true safari adventure by land and water,” Collette explains. “From the powerful Victoria Falls to the calm waters of Lake Kariba, and from the plains across southern Africa’s stunning parks, get ready for a true safari adventure.”

First and foremost, no trip to South Africa would be complete without chances to view wildlife, and the 15-day-and-14-night Wilderness of Southern Africa tour won’t disappoint. While visiting Chobe and Hwange National Parks, you’ll have plenty of chances to look for the Big Five safari animals: Cape buffalo, African elephant, leopard, lion, and black rhinoceros.

Other highlights of the trip include sharing a traditional meal with a local family in their home while in Victoria Falls and looking for birds and wildlife during a three-night cruise on stunning Lake Kariba.

There’s even a beach barbecue on the shores of Lake Kariba!

The tour also offers a choice: While at Hwange National Park, you can either join a morning game drive or take a morning game walk with a specialized ranger. Either option is sure to form the memory of a lifetime.

Not only does the trip include the chance to explore Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, you’ll get to travel from city to city on the famous shinkansen “bullet” train.

Other highlights of the trip, which runs for 14 days and 13 nights, include a chance to walk among the swaying trees of the Arashiyama bamboo forest, and memorably, visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Memorial Museum, where visitors will hear accounts of the atomic bomb’s devastation.

In addition to meeting some of Japan’s ama pearl divers and learning about their profession, the tour also includes a chance to stay with the Buddhist monks at the monastery on Mount Koya.

Foodies will love that you’ll be able to “taste your way along the Mediterranean coast,” sampling paella in Barcelona, flavorful Provençal cuisine in Marseille, and traditional focaccia in Genoa. The tour even offers a chance to enjoy Catalan specialties in a 17th-century farmhouse that has been transformed into a restaurant, and a visit to an ancient abbey that is now a winery.

There is more to the 16-day-and-15-night tour, however. For instance, other highlights of the trip include seeing the architect Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece La Sagrada Familia , or the Expiatory Temple, the world’s tallest basilica. You can even explore the rolling hills and olive groves of Tuscany while accompanying a truffle hunter with his truffle-sniffing dogs.

The tour, as you now expect, also offers some choices. For instance, while in Barcelona, you’ll have the chance to either visit Catalunya’s National Museum of Art or ascend the Montjuïc Castle for “bird’s eye views over the bustling port.”

Highlights of the tour, which lasts 10 days and 9 nights, include visiting the city of Lima, where you can see the historical side of the “City of Kings,” and exploring Andean art forms and the local way of life during a stay in the Sacred Valley.

Then again, the tour also includes a night at the base of the “Lost City of the Incas” at Machu Picchu. Other highlights include discovering the birthplace of the Incan Empire in Puno and Lake Titicaca, and meeting the Indigenous Uros people who live on floating islands on Lake Titicaca.

As you would expect, the 16-day/15-night tour includes three nights in Istanbul, “a melting pot of cultures, historical sites, and religious communities,” that is home to the Topkapi Palace. Other highlights of the tour include a cruise along the Bosphorus Strait between Europe and Asia, an opportunity to walk through the ruins of ancient Ephesus following the footsteps of Paul the Apostle, and attending a Whirling Dervishes ceremony performed by Sufi.

This tour also offers what may very well be the experience of a lifetime: You can either bathe in the thermal spring waters of the Cleopatra Antique Pools or take a guided golf cart tour of Pamukkale’s Greco-Roman ruins.

Other memorable highlights of the tour, lasting 13 days and 12 nights, include a two-night stay at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French town Chamonix, an opportunity to look out upon the Swiss countryside from the panoramic GoldenPass train, and visiting the terraced vineyards of Lavaux before a wine tasting.

The tour also offers an interesting choice. Anyone looking for a chance to relax and be pampered will want to visit the luxurious Terme Chamonix spa, while thrill-seekers will want to opt instead for a cable car ride to ascend the Aiguille du Midi, a 12,605-foot-high mountain.

Authorities in Bahamas search for missing Chicago woman

June 26 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Bahamas are searching for a 41-year-old American woman who went missing while in the Caribbean nation last week.

Taylor Casey of Chicago, Ill., was last seen June 19 in the area of Paradise Island, which is located just off shore of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, according to a Royal Bahamas Police Force missing poster .

Her family in a statement said Taylor was attending the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat located on Paradise Island when she disappeared.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat confirmed in a statement that Casey was a participant in its yoga certification program and that it had asked the police to investigate after she did not attend class on Thursday.

"She was last seen at the retreat late on the evening of June 19th," it said.

"We urge anyone with information on Ms. Casey's whereabouts to contact the local police immediately."

Police issued its missing person poster for Casey on Friday, according to her family. Casey is described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 145 pounds, with brown, natural hair and brown eyes.

Her mother, Collette Seymore, said they are "deeply concerned" for her safety and well being.

"I believe Taylor is in danger because she was eager to share her yoga retreat experience with others upon her return," Collette said.

"Taylor would never disappear like this."

The U.S. State Department in January updated its travel advisory for the Bahamas to urge Americans seeking to visit the country to "exercise increase caution" due to crime.

The Bahamas was listed as a level 2 on the State Department's four-level travel advisory scale.
