Apple Safari is Apple's web browser that comes bundled with the most recent macOS. Safari is faster and more energy efficient than other browsers, so sites are more responsive and your notebook battery lasts longer between charges. Built-in privacy features are stronger than ever. It works with iCloud to let you browse seamlessly across all your devices. And it gives you great ways to find and share your favorites. Put it all together, and no other browser offers such a rich web experience.

Safari for Mac has a condensed and minimalistic interface that offers mac users faster, private browsing with fewer interruptions and extended battery life.

This new layout is better IMO, but there are a few other problems that kinda bug me

Unpopular opinion, but this new layout is better. I don’t even remember the old layout since I’m not even a long-time iOS user (this is my first iPhone). I looked up the old layout or the “cascade” layout and it looks more painful to me than the new one. By the looks of it, it’s definitely easier to miss a tab you’re looking for in the older version, and then you will have to spend like 10 more minutes scrolling to find the tab you’re looking for. Sure, it may be “faster”, but it’s definitely harder to find the certain tab you’re looking for if most of the tabs are only viewable by a little area at the top. This app is mostly fine except for a few problems I get from time to time. Today I’m having a problem where I was trying to look at some Google images and then I tried to look at more but it was just stuck on loading. It wouldn’t even finish loading. This happened only on like 2 searches thankfully though. I’d probably give it a 95% since it has some minor lags and problems.

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

Safari 17: Everything you need to know about the new macOS features

Roman Loyola

Apple’s built-in browser might be the most frequently used app on your Mac (yes, even more than the Finder, super Mac geeks). So Apple always adds helpful new features to Safari, its browser. In version 17, available with macOS Sonoma or as a separate download for macOS Ventura and Monterey, Safari helps you be more productive and secure, and it’s available for macOS Monterey, Ventura, and the upcoming Sonoma. Let’s take a look at the new features.

Safari for Mac has finally caught up with iOS and iPadOS, which have had this feature for a while. A web app is basically a website saved as a self-contained app that appears in the Dock. Just click on its icon to launch it. We have a separate guide to web apps in macOS Sonoma that details how to make and manage them.

With a profile, you can set up separate browsing sessions based on topics. For example, you can set up a Work profile for all the sites that you use for your job, and you can then set up a separate Personal profile for when you’re using the web on your own time. You can get more specific with your profiles if you want, like say, a profile for making travel plans, or another for your hobby. We have a separate guide to profiles in Safari with instructions on how to set them up.

Private Browsing enhancements

When you open a private window ( File > New Private Window , or Shift+Command+N), it opens a browser window that does not save the details of your session (such as the history), nor does it share the session with your other Apple devices. This has long been a part of Safari’s Private Browsing, but Apple has made a few more enhancements in version 17.

Safari locked private browsing

When a Private Window has been inactive for some time, it becomes locked and requires a user password to reopen.

 width=

  • Locked Private Browsing : When a private window isn’t being used (you step away from your Mac, for example), the window locks, and its contents are hidden. To open the window, the password of the active user account must be entered.
  • Link tracking protection. Websites often use trackers in links, but now when you use Private Browsing (as well as links shared in Messages and Mail), the trackers are removed.
  • Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection. Prevents known trackers from loading on pages and from identifying your device. This setting can be adjusted in Safari > Settings > Advanced , then check the box for “Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection.” You can always set it to work always or just when using Private Browsing.
  • Extensions are turned off by default . Browser extensions can be turned on by going to Safari > Settings > Extensions and selecting the extension in the left column. Then in the main section, look for a setting checkbox for Allow in Private Browsing and check the box.

Multitab selection

Multiple tabs can be selected by holding down the Shift key and clicking on each tab. Once you have your tabs selected, Control+click, and a pop-up will appear with options on what you can do.

Safari multitab selection

After selecting tabs, you can open them in a new window, create a Tab Group, and do other tasks.

Favorites bar favicons

Before version 17, the Favorites bar showed links with just text labels. Now, a favicon is included so you can quickly spot the link.

Microsoft Office vs. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides: Which Is Best?

Spectrum just raised its prices again, the internet is not forever, so it's time to preserve what you can, quick links, how to download and install safari extensions on mac, how to enable an installed safari extension on mac, how to use safari extensions on mac.

Extensions are mini-apps that add extra functionality to your browser. In Chrome, you add an extension, and that's it. But Safari on Mac does things differently as extensions are shipped as apps. Here's how to install Safari extensions on Mac.

Mac users who are running Safari 12.0 and higher (running on macOS Mojave and above), have to use the App Store method for installing Safari extensions. Here, you first need to download the extension as an app, then enable the extension before you can start using it.

First, make sure you're running the latest version of macOS .

Related: How to Update Your Mac and Keep Apps Up to Date

Then, open the "Safari" browser. Here, click the "Safari" button from the menu bar and choose the "Safari Extensions" option.

This will directly open the "Safari Extensions" section in the App Store app.

Alternatively, you can open the App Store, go to the "Categories" section from the sidebar, and choose the "Safari Extensions" option to get to this section.

Here, you'll see extensions grouped in multiple categories, along with a "Top Free" and "Top Paid" section.

Here, select the extension that you want to download.

Then, click the "Get" or "Install" button.

If asked, enter your Apple ID's username and password.

The extension, or rather, the app, will now be installed on your Mac. If you want, you can open the app. But chances are, it will just give you instructions on how to enable the extension.

As we mentioned at the top, you can't start using a Safari extension right after installing it. Instead, you need to go into "Safari Preferences" and enable an extension.

When you go back to Safari, you'll see a banner saying that new extensions are available. Here, click the "Turn On and Review" button.

This will directly take you to the "Extensions" tab in Safari Preferences.

Alternatively, go to Safari > Preferences from the menu bar and select the "Extensions" tab to see a list of all available extensions.

To enable an extension, click the checkmark icon next to the extension in the left sidebar.

From the pop-up message, choose the "Turn On" option.

You can come back here at any time and click the checkmark again to disable the extension.

Once the extension is enabled, it will show up in the Safari toolbar, right next to the URL bar.

Navigate to a page in Safari and click an extension to use it. Each extension has its own functionality, and you'll see all its features and options in the drop-down below.

You are free to move the extension icons anywhere you want in the Safari toolbar. Press and hold the "Command" key and drag and drop the extension icon to its new place. Take a look at our complete guide on customizing the Safari toolbar to learn more.

How to Download Safari 17 Beta for macOS Ventura and Monterey

Apple is now allowing Mac users running macOS Ventura and macOS Monterey to try out its latest Safari 17 browser before it officially launches alongside macOS Sonoma in the fall. Keep reading to learn what's new and how to download it.

What's New in Safari 17 for macOS

As of writing, Safari 17 for macOS Ventura and Monterey has reached its fourth beta. Not only is it snappier with faster search responsiveness, it also has more relevant search suggestions – and easier-to-read suggestions. Here's what else is new:

  • Locked Private Browsing : Private browsing windows in Safari can now be locked when not in use, and require secondary authentication via Touch ID or your Mac's password to unlock and access for added privacy.
  • One-Time Code AutoFill from Mail : One-time verification codes you receive in Apple Mail now autofill in Safari, making it easy to log in without leaving the browser.
  • Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection : URLs in ‌Safari 17‌ can be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL so that websites cannot track your browsing using URL identifiers.
  • Multi-Tab Selection : You can now select multiple open tabs at once to move them around the tab bar or create a Tab Group for them.
  • Favicons in the Favorites Bar : You can now identify sites in the Favorites bar more easily with favicons.
  • Privacy Protections for App Extensions : You can now set per-site privacy settings for app extensions in addition to web extensions.
  • Safari Profiles : Safari has gained a new feature called Profiles, which is designed to help keep your browsing separate for topics like Work, School, or Personal. Each profile gets its own icon and silos your history, Tab Groups, favorites, and cookies. You can even assign specific extensions to profiles to optimize your browsing experience based on the task at hand.

How to Install Safari 17 on macOS Ventura/Monterey

In an unexpected change for 2023, anyone who signs in to Apple's developer account website with their Apple ID gets access to developer beta releases as well , even if they are not a paying member of Apple's Developer Program. So if you're still interested in trying out Safari 17, simply follow the steps below.

Note that Safari 17 Beta 4 requires macOS Ventura 13.4 or macOS Monterey 12.5 to run , and that installing it will overwrite your current Safari version. Also, bear in mind that this is beta software , so you may potentially experience bugs and issues that negatively impact your browsing. Having said that, beta 4 is very stable in our experience.

  • Open Safari on your Mac and go to Apple's developer website .
  • Under "Sign in to Apple Developer," enter and submit your Apple ID and password using the arrow buttons, then if required, enter the two-factor authentication code sent to your Apple devices.
  • Now click through to the Safari Beta Downloads page .
  • Under Safari 17, click View Details , then click the Safari 17 Beta DMG link to download the installation package applicable to your macOS version.
  • Once the package is downloaded to your Mac, double-click it and follow the onscreen instructions to complete installation.

I've long gone elsewhere too. There are quite a few websites that don't work on Safari. In fact I see a lot of organisations actively suggesting Chrome. Having said that the vast majority of web work for me is Chrome and FIrefox. Safari is probably 5%.

Last night, at 2AM in the night, I was on the bed and my phone made a sound, and that was the invitation for the beta of Safari 17 for my Mac on Monterey. However, I no longer install betas anymore, past are those days I tested every new beta with excitement while suffering the bugs and annoyances of using beta software. Nowadays I stay with the stable releases as much as I can. Thankfully, Safari keeps getting updates on older systems such as Monterey.

Name a website that doesn’t work with Safari. I use Safari all day long and have yet to run into a website that doesn’t work. Even government websites work these days.

How to download new Safari browser before MacOS Monterey arrives

While it’s a big couple of weeks for Microsoft fans – with new Surface hardware today and Windows 11 dropping in a couple of weeks – the autumn also holds promise for Mac-lovers.

MacOS Monterey is out imminently, while a crop of new MacBook and Mac computers running Apple Silicon processors are expected within the next few weeks.

Now Apple is giving users a taste of what to expect from Monterey by rolling out the latest version of the Safari web browser, complete with the biggest design overhaul in years. The update includes new Tab Groups and redesigned tabs, as well as a more compact tab bar.

Mac owners on the current Big Sur or 2020’s Catalina release can now update Safari to version 15 of the browser, with the ability to roll it back to the current version if they don’t like it.

Safari 15 What's new

Here’s how to update to Safari 15 on macOS Big Sur and Catalina:

  • Click the Apple logo in the top left corner of the interface
  • Select System Preferences > Software Update
  • Here you’ll see “Updates are available for your Mac”
  • Select Update Now to begin the process

How to change the look of the Safari address bar in iOS 15

How to change the look of the Safari address bar in iOS 15

Here are the release notes from Apple:

Safari 15 delivers faster performance, improved security, and the following new features:

  • Tab Groups help you save and organise your tabs and easily access them across devices
  • Redesigned tabs have a rounder and more defined appearance and take on the colour of the webpage
  • Compact tab bar option shows more of your web page on screen
  • HTTPS upgrade automatically switches sites from HTTP to more secure HTTPS when available

Apple is meeting a little resistance from iOS users when it comes to iOS 15’s Safari app, which has controversially moved the address bar from the top to the bottom of the screen. Personally, I like it as it means less reaching on my iPhone 12 Max. Many don’t. Here’s how to change back .

I review Macs for a living, and I install these 5 apps first on every MacBook

Install these things first to make your Mac your own

MacBook Pro 16-inch 2021 sitting on a patio table

Google Chrome

Setting up a new Mac? Whether it's a MacBook or a Mac mini , I have some suggestions for the apps you should install right away.

Sure, Safari and the rest of Apple's default apps are good enough to get by with in a pinch. But I find nothing makes a Mac feel more comfortable to use right out of the box than kitting it out with all the apps and tools I use on a daily basis.

I've had a lot of time to refine my list, too, because I regularly review Macs and MacBooks as part of the Computing team here at Tom's Guide. And every time I unbox a new Apple computer, one of the first things I do is install all the software on this list.

(The very first thing I do is turn on dark mode , of course!)

I have a similar list of 7 apps I install on every Windows 11 PC I get in for review, and I like to use the service Ninite to create a custom installer package with all those apps in one handy file. Unfortunately, Ninite isn't supported on Mac, so you may have to just head to each app's website and download it the old-fashioned way.

Macapps.link in action

You could also try using macapps.link , which offers a similar one-stop-shop for Mac apps: you just click the ones you want from the big list, and macapps packages them all up for you in one easy-to-download installer. It has a pretty good selection that includes some of the best Mac apps we recommend, including everything on this list.

The site can look a little dodgy if you don't use an ad blocker since it displays a significant number of ads, but I've used it many times myself and never had an issue.

Macapps.link in action

Whether you choose to try macapps for yourself or want to click through to every app before downloading, these are the 5 apps I recommend you install first on your new Mac!

I didn't think much of Discord back when it launched in 2015, but nowadays it's become one of my most-used tools for staying in touch with old friends and colleagues around the world. For that reason, it's one of the first things I install on any new Mac.

Once upon a time it felt like Twitter was the best place to stay in touch with people, but these days I prefer the more comfortable intimacy of a Discord server with pals. The service has evolved significantly over the years, too, and now you can use it for cross-platform voice chat, so friends on Macs, PCs, and even a PS5 can all hop into the same voice channel to catch up after work.

While you can get by with the browser version of Discord, I like to download the app because I feel like the quality of my audio sounds better when I'm broadcasting using the app vs. the browser version—but that's entirely subjective, and your mileage may vary.

Gimp in action

As a working journalist I need to edit images on a regular basis, and the Photos app just doesn't cut it. I like to download GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) on every new MacBook I get my hands on because it's capable, quick to download and most importantly, free.

I've also spent years using it, so I know my way around this image editor in a way I'll never understand Photoshop. And while there are lots of great free image editors available out there, including lots you can access right in your browser, I prefer to have an app downloaded to my Mac hard drive so I can work with images even when I'm on the go and don't have a reliable Internet connection.

Sure, the name is a little silly and the interface could be better, but for the asking price you can't beat GIMP.

Google Chrome in action on a MacBook Pro 2023

Like I said up top, Safari is fine—in fact, it's better than ever thanks to the upgrades in macOS Sequoia —but I still prefer to use Chrome on my Macs.

Admittedly, partly that's just laziness and habit: I have Google accounts for both work and personal business, so it's convenient to have Chrome because I can stay on top of both with a browser logged into each account.

But I also love Chrome because while it's demanding, it feels faster and more responsive than Safari. I also like how it supports every website and web service I need to use. Plus, it has robust cross-platform support so I can open a link on my phone using Chrome for iOS, then hit a button to send it to my desktop Chrome instance running on my MacBook for easier reading when I'm back at my desk.

Steam running on a MacBook Pro 2021

Macs are better gaming platforms than ever thanks to the work Apple's been doing to help game developers get their games running well on the company's M-series chips, so Steam is a must-have.

You can get games off the Mac App Store, the Epic Games Store or a few other places, but Steam is the first (and often only) game storefront I download because it simply has more games than anywhere else. And with the power of Apple's top-tier chips in premium Macs like the MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max you can enjoy the best Mac games  (including my fav, Baldur's Gate 3 ) at killer framerates.

It's not just about the games either—I also keep in touch with a few friends on my Steam friends list, so it's nice to have it installed and running on my PC to keep abreast of who's playing what.

VLC MEdia Player running on a MacBook Pro 2023

Sometimes you need to watch a .wmv (Windows Media Video) on a Mac, and QuickTime Player isn't up to the task. For those moments, you want a capable alternative like VLC media player installed.

I put this media player on basically every laptop I review because I watch a lot of videos while testing display quality and conducting research, and I can't afford to be constrained by the limits of Apple's default software. I recommend VLC because its lightweight and easy to download, yet supports a broad variety of file formats and codecs.

Plus, it's free!

Bottom line

Every Mac I get my hands on gets these apps installed as soon as possible, because navigating the web in Safari or editing images in Photos feels terrible. And when work is done, I'm ready to fire up Discord and Steam and have some fun with my friends.

I wish Ninite supported Mac because I already regularly use it all the time for Windows 11 PC software, but at least there's macapps.link. I've been using it with my new MacBooks for a while now, and as long as it stays as useful as it is, I think it's a great way to grab all of these apps in one fell swoop.

And of course, you don't have to stick to my suggestions--macapps offers a wide variety of free software, so have a look around and try out some new finds!

Little Snitch as a monitor/firewall against unwanted information gathering for advertising - is nice though. I also install pretty much only user space software and software from known publishers... though I do have a few terminal apps through homebrew (though they are known sources - not randomly selected ones).

How to install Microsoft Copilot on a Mac

If you've heard about Microsoft Copilot and want to use it on your Mac, you can go about doing that a few ways. You won't quite get the system-level integration Windows users enjoy, but you can get pretty close and make the program a part of your system instead of just a tab in your browser.

Read on to learn how to insert Microsoft Copilot into your macOS-powered computer.

How to install Microsoft Copilot on Mac

Option 1: app store.

If you have an Apple Silicon Mac , you can run iPad and iPhone apps, including Microsoft Copilot, on your Mac natively thanks to Arm architecture. You just need to download the program:

  • Open the Apple App Store on your Mac.
  • Search for Microsoft Copilot .
  • On the Microsoft Copilot store page, click the Get button.

Microsoft Copilot should install like any other app. After the process is finished, you can access it from your Applications folder, then interact with Copilot in a dedicated window.

As you can see from the picture above, Microsoft Copilot on Mac might be fairly basic, but it gets the job done. If you want an integration with Copilot that is more similar to the Windows experience where you can launch the app by pressing a combination of buttons, you can set one up through Automator and the Settings menu. Here's how to do so:

  • Open Automator .
  • Create an automation to Launch application , and change workflow to No input .
  • Open Settings and scroll down to Keyboard .

Once you're done, you'll be able to call Copilot from anywhere on your Mac at any time.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is an artificial intelligence chatbot available for iOS and Android that uses the DALL-E 3 and GPT-4 models. The software is also built into Windows and can be accessed over the web.

Option 2: Safari web apps

If you want to use Microsoft Copilot but don't want to mess about with Automator or applications, you can simply add Microsoft Copilot to your Safari Dock as a shortcut.

  • Navigate to the Microsoft Copilot website in Safari.
  • Click File at the top, followed by Add to Dock .
  • Rename the app if you want to, then click Add .

If all goes well, you should see Microsoft Copilot in your Dock for ease of access. This is essentially just a wrapper for a Safari tab in an application, but it's virtually indistinguishable from a normal program. However, while adding Copilot to Safari is significantly easier than the prior method, the program won't run locally, but you can't launch it via keystroke any time you want.

You should use Add to Dock to turn any site into a Mac app

Not many apps have apps designed for macOS, and running mobile versions can be clunky at best. So you can — and should — use web apps instead

Which option is best, and are there others?

Since Microsoft doesn't have any official Mac-dedicated applications, you have to rely on these two methods if you want Microsoft Copilot on a macOS computer. The iPad app is the best native solution for Mac, but if you don't care about that, the Safari Dock option will work just fine. If you want to use OpenAI's latest GPT-4 models on your Mac, there's also the option of using the official ChatGPT Mac app . You could also use virtualization software to get Windows 11 , and Copilot by extension, on any of the best Macs .

You are using an outdated browser. Please upgrade your browser to improve your experience.

Everything new in the third round of Apple Intelligence developer betas

Marko Zivkovic's Avatar

Apple has released its third round of developer betas for 2024, which include new Apple Intelligence features

safari install on mac

Last updated 2 hours ago

Apple's latest round of developer betas introduces support for two key Apple Intelligence features — a new Clean Up tool for the Photos app, and an option for notification summarization. Both of these features were officially previewed at WWDC in June but have only now been made available to beta testers.

It's worth pointing out, however, that both of these features — notification summarization as well as the new Clean Up tool — are only available on devices that support Apple Intelligence. This means that an iPhone 15 Pro , iPhone 15 Pro Max, an iPad or Mac with an M1 or newer chip is required to use any AI-related features.

Remove objects from photos with the new Clean Up tool

The Clean Up feature, available within the Photos app, lets users remove unwanted objects from images through the use of Apple's on-device generative AI software. Users can tap, circle, or brush an unwanted object to make it disappear from a photo.

Apple's AI software can automatically detect potentially unwanted objects and highlight them. Tapping the undesired object will remove it from a photo.

Alternatively, it is also possible to circle or brush objects that are not automatically identified by Apple's generative AI. By selecting an object this way, it's possible to fully or partially remove it from an image.

Apple's AI software fills in the remaining area of the image, making it as though the undesired object was never even there. Even so, images altered with the feature are clearly labeled as edited with Clean Up for added convenience. It is also possible to undo any changes and revert the image to its initial, unaltered state.

AppleInsider first broke the news on Apple's Clean Up feature through an exclusive report , published more than a month before the feature was announced at WWDC.

Apple Intelligence will summarize notifications for you

Also present in Apple's third assortment of developer betas is an all-new notification summarization feature. While summarization was available for the default Mail and Messages apps in earlier versions of iOS 18.1 beta, the company's latest release expands support to even more applications.

Smartphone screen showing an email about 212 Opal Street's prime location, quiet atmosphere, ocean-view backyard, but requiring significant repairs and garden restoration. Sent by Markus Berget.

Apple has added a new setup screen that gives users the option to decide which apps should use notification summarization, if any. The feature can be enabled for system apps as well as third-party applications.

Users can also update their preferences after the fact by navigating to System Settings > Notifications > Summarize Previews . Here, users can enable or disable the feature and select which apps will use notification summarization.

The new feature leverages Apple's on-device AI and uses it to create summaries of notifications. Notifications and groups of notifications will be boiled down to essential data points, meaning that users will have easy access to key notification details.

Through Apple Intelligence, users will be able to receive a synopsis of their recent messages and conversations, emails, news articles, and much more. These summaries are displayed on the Lock Screen.

As with the Clean Up tool, AppleInsider first detailed Apple's summarization features in the months ahead of release. This was done through our reports on Project Blackpearl , Project GreyMatter , and the Ajax LLM .

The third developer beta of macOS Sequoia lets you install App Store apps directly to an external drive

While the Clean Up tool and notification summarization are available across all of Apple's platforms, macOS Sequoia has received a system-specific upgrade.

The third developer beta of macOS Sequoia 15.1, the App Store, will let users install applications directly to an external drive. When this setting is enabled, macOS automatically installs App Store applications larger than a gigabyte onto an external drive, assuming one is plugged in.

As reported by 9to5mac , the setting only affects applications larger than a gigabyte. Apps with a smaller file size are installed directly onto the internal drive. This feature could prove particularly useful for owners of Mac computers with a lower storage capacity, such as 256GB.

macOS Sequoia also removes certain requirements related to app installation. On earlier versions of macOS, users needed to have free space that was equal to twice the size of an application. This is no longer the case starting with macOS Sequoia.

As a whole, macOS Sequoia brings with it a whole host of innovative features, from Safari Highlights to Math Notes in the Calculator app. macOS Sequoia, along with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will be available to all users in the Fall of 2024, while Apple Intelligence features will be available through a later update.

What an annoying article. I came here to read and see what else is new in the beta that I may have missed, not for Marko to repeatedly try to claim “first” on reporting features from months ago.

AI is no longer limited to the US, however EU and China are still not included. AI is still limited to English only.

Does Mac Safari(16.1) support PWA to add website to home screen?

I have updated my safari to the latest version 16.1 on Mac and try to find the entrance to add web page to home screen. But I still couldn't find it.
Is there anyone know if Mac Safari(16.1) support to add web page to home screen currently?
Many thanks

he means progressive web app (PWA) and basically it is the ability to install a web app to your desktop. It then effectively acts like a standalone app with better functionality and integration. Try Squoosh.app to give it a trial go.

However, you can't with the Safari browser. Apple are sadly years behind with allowing this but if you can bring yourself to do it...

PWAs work with Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on MacOS

What exactly do you mean by home screen? Do you mean Safari's Start Page? Or do you mean something else? The expression "home screen" sounds like something you have on an iPhone, not a Mac. Can you please clarify?

  • Shortcat is a free Mac app that indexes clickable UI elements and assigns shortcuts, allowing you to navigate without a mouse.
  • You can search and select on-screen elements using Shortcat by typing letter hints, the element's name, or filtering by type.
  • Shortcat simulates mouse actions like clicking, scrolling, and modifier clicks using keyboard shortcuts.

Your Mac's trackpad or mouse lets you navigate your computer. However, if you prefer a keyboard-only approach or, at least, want to use your trackpad less frequently, you can use Shortcat to access and interact with elements on your screen without a mouse.

Shortcat is a free Mac app that indexes clickable UI elements on your screen and assigns shortcuts or lets you search for them, allowing you to navigate your Mac with a few keystrokes. You can use Shortcat to scroll, click buttons, open compatible apps, browse the web, and more, without a trackpad or mouse. So, whether your mouse is not working on your Mac or you like keeping your hands on your keyboard, Shortcat is a great app to try.

Download: Shortcat (Free)

Here's how to install and customize Shortcat after downloading it using the link above:

  • Double-click the downloaded Shortcat file and click Open on the pop-up window.
  • You'll get a welcome window prompting you to give permission to the app. Click the Request Permission button and Open System Settings on the next page. Toggle on the switch next to Shortcat.
  • Click Next on the subsequent page that opens to confirm that the permission was granted.
  • You can set Shortcat's keyboard activation shortcut on the next window or click Next if you are happy with the default Cmd + Shift + Space .
  • The next window shows a quick tutorial on how to use Shortcat. Click Next and then Open Preferences to customize Shortcat to your liking.
  • Once you're done, click Finish Tutorial .

After installation, you can return to the preferences menu anytime by clicking the Shortcat icon in the menu bar and selecting Preferences .

Shortcat offers several ways to search for clickable on-screen elements without taking your hands off your keyboard. You can trigger Shortcat using your selected keyboard shortcut or the default Cmd + Shift + Space . Here are some ways to use Shortcat to interact with on-screen elements:

Search and Select With Letter Hints

One of the quickest ways to search for on-screen elements using Shortcat is by selecting the two-letter hints that appear in yellow boxes over them. After activating Shortcat using the Cmd + Shift + Space keyboard shortcut, you'll see yellow boxes pop up, each containing one or two letters.

Type the letter(s) corresponding to the element you want to select and hit Return (or Enter ). For example, to go to the Notification setting (in the screenshot below), type AJ to highlight it, and hit Return .

Search by Typing the Element's Name

Another quick way to interact with on-screen elements is by typing the element's name into the Shorcat search box. For example, type Notification into Shortcat's search bar and hit Return . This works best when you know what you're looking for.

Filter by Element Type

Sometimes, you may want to narrow down your search by specifying the type of element you're looking for. For example, if you only want to select links on the screen, you can type Link into Shortcat's search bar. This will filter out any other elements and only show links on the screen, which you can select using the two-letter hints.

Select Commonly Used Elements Using Cmd + Number

Shortcat lets you use the Cmd + Num shortcut to pick from commonly used elements on the list with minimal effort. Hold Cmd and press the corresponding number key to select the element.

Beyond selecting on-screen UI elements, Shortcat also allows you to simulate various mouse actions like clicking and scrolling using your keyboard. Here's a breakdown of the key mouse actions you can perform using Shortcat:

Left, Right, and Double-Click Actions With Shortcat

After selecting a clickable element, as described above, press Return (or Enter ) to perform a left-click. To simulate a double-click, press Return twice. For example, to open a file on your Mac, you would select the file and press Return twice. Lastly, to simulate a right-click and open the context menu, simply press Control + Return .

Modifier Clicks With Shortcat

Shortcat also supports various modifier clicks, which are performed by holding a modifier key and Return . For example, you can use Cmd + Return to open a link in a new tab or Shift + Return to select several on-screen items.

How to Scroll Using Shortcat

Shortcat lets you scroll through content on your screen using just your keyboard. Hold Space + Cmd and I , J , K , or L to scroll up, left, down, or right, respectively. For example, to scroll down, simply hold Space + Cmd and press K multiple times until the desired section is in view.

In addition, Shortcat lets you use keyboard shortcuts to navigate active windows just like you would with arrow keys (since arrow keys are used to navigate clickable UI elements when Shortcat is active). Hold Space and press I , J , K , or L to simulate arrow key functionalities in an active window.

Shortcat can enhance your Mac workflow across various apps like Safari, Chrome, Mail, Slack, Teams, Notion, and more. Here are some common use cases that demonstrate how you can navigate your Mac efficiently using Shorcat

Navigate Apple Mail

You can use Shortcat to open and navigate your email folders in Apple's Mail app. Activate Shortcat by pressing Cmd + Shift + Space , then type Launchpad and hit Return . As described above, you can use Shortcat to select any clickable UI element in Mail, including specific emails, trash, archive, reply, and more. You can navigate other compatible apps similarly using Shortcat.

Switching Tabs in Chrome or Safari

You probably have multiple tabs open in Chrome at any given time. Instead of manually clicking through each tab with your mouse, use Shortcat to quickly find the one you need. Simply activate Shortcat, type the tab's name or select using the letter hints, and press Return .

Using Shortcat as Your Emoji Picker

You can use Shortcat to type emojis on your Mac . This can be handy if you've reassigned the Function (Fn)/Globe key to something else. Simply press Cmd + Shift + Space to activate Shortcat, press the : (colon) key, and type the emoji you want to insert—for instance, sad, happy, rocket, etc. Shortcat will show you a list of matching emojis from which you can select and hit Return to insert.

Overall, Shortcat can be useful for navigating and executing actions quickly on your Mac using your keyboard alone. Although it certainly takes some time to learn and get used to, it can greatly improve your productivity once you master it. So, try it out and see how it can enhance your Mac experience.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

How to Remove search.installmac.com from Mac

Karess Rubrico

You may wonder why search.installmac.com was set as your browser’s default homepage, especially if you don’t remember modifying your settings. While the website looks like a legitimate search engine, you’ll notice that clicking links redirects you to weird sites. What’s more, changes to your settings don’t reflect.

Stop engaging with the site for now. Let’s dive into what it does, why it got installed on your device, and how you can remove it fast.

What is search.installmac.com?

This unfamiliar website made its way to Safari, Chrome, and Firefox through what is known as a browser hijacker. A browser hijacker is a form of malware stealthily downloaded to your computer along with other free downloaded apps. You’re more likely to get malicious software when downloading PDF creators, download managers, or video recording or streaming services. In addition, browser hijackers install extensions or other apps that revert any changes you make to your browser settings.

At their worst, these kinds of malware collect browsing data such as your IP address and the websites you visit. It’s also very likely that this information is sold to third parties to generate revenue.

If you’re encountering issues with viruses and malware on your Mac, consider trying a reliable antivirus like Intego. It’s one of the most effective tools that can help you protect your system and effortlessly regain control over your Mac’s security.

2. Clear Your Browser Cache

Next, you’ll have to clear your browsing cache and history. Here’s how:

  • Navigate to the Safari toolbar by clicking on Safari on the menu bar.
  • Click Clear History .
  • From the drop-down menu, select All History.
  • Click Clear History to confirm.
  • Click on Chrome at the upper-left corner of your screen.
  • Select Delete Browsing Data.
  • Choose All Time from the Time Range drop-down menu.
  • Check all the boxes underneath the drop-down menu.
  • Click on Delete Data to confirm.

3. Remove Unfamiliar Apps

You will also need to delete apps that the virus installed on your computer. Open Finder , then navigate to Applications . Check for any apps such as NicePlayer , MPlayerX , or other software you don’t recall installing. Drag them to the Trash and delete them right away.

4. Restore Your Mac to Factory Settings

If malware still appears on your browser, you might need to erase all content and settings on your Mac. Navigate to System Settings > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Don’t forget to keep an uninfected backup on iCloud or Time Machine so that you can still access your important files.

If you subscribe to iCloud+ and are using its Private Relay feature, try reloading the page without Private Relay: From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This menu item appears only when Private Relay is turned on for your network. Learn more about iCloud Private Relay .

Check VPN or other security software

If you installed VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with your network connections, that software could affect your use of the website or the internet. Learn about network issues related to VPN and other software .

Check network settings

Certain network settings, such as custom proxy settings or custom DNS settings , can affect access to content on the internet. Even if you haven't changed these or other network settings yourself, you might have installed software that changed them for you.

To find out whether the issue is with the network settings on your Mac, try viewing the page from a different web browser or different device on the same network. Or reset your network settings by setting up a new network location on your Mac.

If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website, and you should contact the website developer for help.

If the issue continues to affect only a particular webpage, contact the website developer for help.

Download iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 2 to Try Apple Intelligence on Your iPhone

The second iOS 18.1 developer beta brings Apple Intelligence, a redesigned Photos app and distraction control to Safari.

safari install on mac

All iPhones that are compatible with iOS 18 will get the update this fall.

You can try out Apple Intelligence right now, although it's in early beta form.

CNET Tips_Tech

Apple has released the second developer beta for iOS 18.1, which includes long-awaited Apple Intelligence, with (some) new AI features live and ready to use right now. iOS 18 beta 2 also brings another redesign to the Photos app and the ability to hide distracting elements in Safari, both of which are available on the current iOS 18 public beta.

But heads up: You can download the iOS 18.1 developer beta and use Apple Intelligence only if you have an  iPhone 15 Pro or  iPhone 15 Pro Max . If you don't have the iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, you can still use this guide to download the latest iOS 18 dev beta, which is currently on its fifth iteration.

Don't miss :  Apple Intelligence Arrives, But Only in Developer Beta for Now

You can use Apple Intelligence to create original emoji, proofread your emails, summarize articles in Safari, prioritize your notifications, analyze your audio transcripts and reduce interruptions on your iPhone and other compatible devices. And Siri of course will use AI to better assist you. However, not all of these AI features are currently live.

iOS 18 brings a redesigned home screen, a  customizable control center , locked and hidden apps,  scheduled text messages , a new password manager app, text messaging via satellite and a huge redesign to the Photos app.

The Apple Developer program has long required a fee to join, at $100 per year. Last year, with the release of the iOS 17 developer beta, Apple created a free tier of the Apple Developer program, which allows you to download any developer betas for free as long as you have an Apple ID.

If you want to try out iOS 18.1 today, here's how.

Why you might not want to download the iOS 18.1 developer beta

Just because you can download the iOS 18.1 developer beta for free doesn't mean you need to, or should.

Early developer betas, such as this one, are intended for developers to test their apps on upcoming versions of iOS. It's also a way for developers to identify and report bugs, which helps Apple improve the software before it's released to the general public. That's a major reason why you may not want to download the iOS 18.1 developer beta on your phone: the bugs.

A software bug, or any other glitches, can make your phone unstable. You may not be able to use some of your favorite apps, and even if you can, you may deal with apps that crash unexpectedly. The performance of your entire phone could be affected; the developer beta could make your phone lag or lead your battery to drain faster than usual or even overheat.

New Gestures Will Enhance the Way You Interact with Apple Devices

safari install on mac

I've downloaded developer betas on my personal iPhone for the last decade, and haven't faced any major issues. It's mostly just annoying when an app crashes or my battery dies quickly, but I've always managed.

If you have a backup iPhone, you should definitely use that for the iOS 18.1 developer beta, because you won't need it every day, so you won't feel the full effects of any bugs or other issues. If you don't have one, running iOS 18.1 developer beta on your primary should hopefully be fine.

In case you still want iOS 18 but don't want to deal with the developer beta, there's always the more stable public beta for iOS 18 , which is now live. Unfortunately, there is no iOS 18.1 public beta just yet, only iOS 18, which doesn't have the AI features.

What to know before you download the iOS 18.1 developer beta

Before you start downloading the iOS 18.1 developer beta, there are a few things you should know:

  • You need a supported phone . iOS 18.1 will run only on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. iOS 18 works on the iPhone XS and later.
  • Update your phone . It's best to update to the latest general release before updating to a developer beta. The latest iOS version is currently 17.5.1. You'll at least need to be running iOS 16.4 if you want to download the iOS 18.1 developer beta as an over-the-air update.
  • Also, back up your iPhone.  For this, you can't just do a regular backup. You'll need to archive a backup on your computer, which is a backup that can't automatically be replaced or deleted. On your Mac, connect your iPhone, open a Finder window, select your iPhone, click Back Up Now , go to Manage Backups , right-click the backup you just created and then click  Archive . The process is similar on Windows, but you'll use the iTunes app instead.

In case you ever want to go back to iOS 17, here's our step-by-step guide .

MacOS dialog showing iPhone device backups, with a contextual menu and the option Archive highlighted.

If your iPhone doesn't automatically back up, you can do it manually through your settings.

Now, you're ready to sign up for the Apple Developer program.

How to enroll in the Apple Developer program for free

As I mentioned, there's now a free tier of the Apple Developer program, which allows you to download any developer beta without paying. Using the Apple ID that's connected to the device you want to update to iOS 18.1, do the following:

1. Go to the Apple Developer website , hit the three-dash menu in the top-left and then tap Account in the menu that appears.

2. Sign in with your Apple ID.

3. Finally, read through the Apple Developer Agreement, check all the boxes and hit Submit .

You won't get full access to the development tools that the paid Apple Developer program membership offers, but you'll have access to the iOS 18.1 developer beta. If you're a developer, you should consider signing up for the paid version.

creating a free Apple Developer Program account for iOS 17

You can then scroll to Software Downloads to check out everything you can install, including the iOS 18.1 developer beta.

Install the iOS 18.1 developer beta over-the-air on your iPhone

You can download the iOS 18.1 developer beta manually, but the easiest way to do it is with an over-the-air update -- just like you would download and install your regular iOS update. After you sign up for the Apple Developer program, you should see the option to download the iOS 18.1 developer beta in your settings.

To download the iOS 18.1 developer beta over-the-air, here's what you need to do:

1. On your iPhone, go to the Settings > General > Software Update .

2. Next, go into Beta Updates and tap the iOS 18 Developer Beta option.

3. Finally, go back and tap Download and Install under the new "iOS 18.1 Developer Beta" option that appears.

iOS 18 developer update on iPhone

If you don't see the iOS 18.1 beta option, you'll need to wait a bit.

Enter your passcode, agree to the terms and conditions and then just wait for the update to install on your iPhone. Depending on your internet connection, the entire process should take about 10 or 15 minutes.

Once your phone reboots, you should be running the iOS 18.1 developer beta.

You can also download the iOS 18.1 developer beta with your Mac

The problem with an over-the-air update is that it requires a certain amount of storage, so if your storage is nearly full, you won't be able to use the option in the previous section. Fortunately, you can use your computer to update to the iOS 18.1 developer beta.

1. On your Mac, go to this Apple Developer Program download page , find "iOS 18.1 beta," click Download Restore Images and download the iOS beta software restore image for your iPhone model.

2. Connect your phone to your computer and enter your device passcode or hit Trust This Computer .

3. Open a Finder window and then click your device in the sidebar under Locations .

4. Finally, hold down the Option key, click Check for Update and choose the iOS 18.1 beta software restore image you just downloaded from the Apple Developer website.

iOS 18 beta download on Mac

If you have no storage on your iPhone, this is the way to go to get iOS 18.

The iOS 18.1 developer beta software will begin to install on your iPhone. Wait for a few minutes and when your phone reboots, you should have access to iOS 18.1.

How to sign up for the Apple Intelligence features

Once you download the iOS 18.1 developer beta, you must join a waitlist for Apple Intelligence. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and tap Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist > Join Waitlist . It took a couple hours for Apple Intelligence to arrive on my phone, but some people have reported the AI features going live a few minutes after waitlisting.

Apple Intelligence waitlist page on the iPhone

Once the feature is live, you can go back here to disable

Once Apple Intelligence is available to you, you'll receive a notification and you can go through a quick tutorial of some of the features that are now live, including Writing Tools and AI-powered Siri. You can go to the Apple Intelligence & Siri page to disable the setting if you no longer want to use it.

For more, check out how you'll soon be able to use your iPhone on your Mac .

Apple Watch Series 10

These are the new apple products launching this fall 2024.

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

We’re just one month away from fall, and the kickoff of Apple’s major product launch season. Summer has been quiet for new products, but Apple is gearing up for a big fall 2024 starting with its iPhone 16 event in September.

Here are all the new Apple products launching this fall.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

safari install on mac

The flagship iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are set to offer big upgrades over last year’s models. Here’s the expected highlights list:

  • larger displays than ever , at 6.3 inches for the Pro model and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max, up from last year’s 6.1 and 6.7
  • a dedicated hardware button for controlling the camera
  • camera upgrades that include a better Ultra Wide camera, improved low light performance, and a 5x optical zoom
  • A18 Pro chip built for AI thanks to its supercharged Neural Engine

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

iPhone 16 production now in full flow | 9to5Mac render

Unlike the Pro versions, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have the same display sizes as last year’s models. In a change from recent history though, the 16 and 16 Plus may receive the same A18 Pro chip found in the Pro and Pro Max models. Or perhaps, for the first time, we’ll see two new iPhone chips debut: an A18 for the lower end models, and the A18 Pro in the high-end. Another feature expected to come to all 16 models is the hardware button for camera features, often called the ‘capture button.’ Expect other camera improvements and new color options for the standard 16 and 16 Plus, with iOS 18’s AI features billed as a main selling point .

safari install on mac

Apple is planning to launch not one, but two separate tiers of AirPods 4 models. These two models will provide a lower priced version and a more premium option, with both the AirPods 2 and 3 expected to be removed from Apple’s lineup. Both AirPods 4 models will feature USB-C charging cases and an updated stem design that looks like a blend between AirPods Pro and AirPods 3. Noise cancellation is said to be exclusive to the higher-end model, as well as Find My support.

AirPods Max 2

AirPods Max

At long last, AirPods Max are set to receive an update this fall . AirPods Max 2 will switch from Lightning to USB-C charging, and will likely gain several of the features currently exclusive to AirPods Pro 2 , such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Audio.

Apple Watch Series 7 vs 9 Display

Apple is going big with the new Apple Watch Series 10, with the two standard sizes both being increased. The smaller Watch will be about the size of the current larger model, while the larger option grows to match the Ultra’s screen size. The device’s case is also slimming down, and it will boast a more powerful chip that could lay the groundwork for Apple Intelligence in the future. Health sensors for detecting hypertension and sleep apnea are also possibilities.

Apple Watch Ultra 3

safari install on mac

Apple Watch Ultra has proven a hit for the company, with annual updates offered since its 2022 debut. Not much is known about this year’s Apple Watch Ultra 3. It is certain to at least match the new capabilities of the Series 10 models, including a faster chip that’s better equipped for AI. We may get new health sensors too. One selling point that would excite lots of buyers is a space black titanium option.

M4 MacBook Pro

OLED MacBook Pro launch 2026 | 2023 models shown

The iPad Pro’s exclusive run as the only Apple device with an M4 chip is coming to an end soon. This fall Apple is expected to ship new MacBook Pro models that feature the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max. Don’t expect a major redesign of the computers’ form factor, with the M4 being the highlight this year.

iPad mini 7

Apple foldable – iPhone or iPad mini (shown)

The iPad mini hasn’t been updated since 2021, but that drought seems set to end soon. Following an iPad-free 2023, Apple plans to update its entire lineup this year, including the mini. Expect to see an upgraded display with no more jelly scrolling and a revised chip. Perhaps the iPad mini will even move to an M-class chip for compatibility with Apple Intelligence features .

iPad 11th gen

safari install on mac

To complete its mission of updating the full iPad lineup this year, Apple will also ship a new base-model iPad. Little is known about this new device, but expect a newer, more powerful chip for sure. Perhaps some Apple Pencil enhancements too. But nothing in the way of a major hardware redesign.

M4 Mac mini with major redesign

smaller Mac mini concept

Apple has big—or should I say small—plans for this year’s Mac mini update. The new Mac mini will gain the M4 chip, with an M4 Pro option coming too. But the more substantial news is that the product is getting a major hardware redesign . The new mini will reportedly be drastically smaller, closer in size to the existing Apple TV 4K.

M3 iMac

Apple is also expected to launch M4 iMacs before 2024 ends. Unlike the Mac mini, the new iMac isn’t expected to receive a redesign or any other significant new features. Here’s hoping we’ll at least get USB-C accessories this time around.

Wild Cards: Apple TV 4K, HomePod with display, and more

There have been rumors off and on about new home devices in the works at Apple, possibly with a 2024 release date. One is an updated Apple TV 4K with a better chip, another is a HomePod revision with an LCD display on top. Neither update is likely to make waves, nor will they bring Apple Intelligence compatibility. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple has in store.
