Swamp Tour Ends in Death

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The fatal swamp tour was billed as half tour, half ride. One survivor says he usually enjoys thrill rides. But on this one, Christian Wagner says he was scared from the beginning. Wagner, a 29-year-old quality assurance manager from Newport Beach, California says the airboat's captain "took a sharp left turn and the left side of the boat went down" causing the boat to capsize.

The accident killed a 31-year-old man also of Newport Beach, and a 50-year-old woman from the San Francisco area. The boat held 16 passengers when it flipped over Saturday. The official cause of the accident is unknown pending further investigation by the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office.

The Swamp King, a Louisiana Swamp Tours airboat, was cruising in Lake Salvador when the boat flipped, dumping all 16 passengers and the pilot into the neck-deep, murky water near Crown Point. Many of the passengers, wearing seatbelts when the boat capsized, were strapped to their seats underwater until they could free themselves or be cut free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, most swamp tours in New Orleans are considered unethical by animal welfare organizations. Many tour guides bait alligators (for close-up views and photo ops) with food such as marshmallows and chicken. As a result, the alligators can associate people with food and become aggressive, potentially endangering both themselves and tourgoers.

You can expect to pay at least $50 per person for a swamp tour that includes transportation; if you have a rental car for your trip to New Orleans, you can save some coin by driving to the tour location. Fees also vary depending on the company and type of vessel used to explore the swamps.

If alligators are your top reason for trekking to the swamp, plan for a spring or summer tour, as alligators enter a state of brumation (a modified period of hibernation) during the cold weather months.

You'll want to dress casually for your swamp tour in New Orleans – a T-shirt and shorts or lightweight pants is ideal. You'll also want to bring a light jacket in case you get chilly or it rains during your tour.

Two die when swamp tour boat capsizes

A man and a woman from California died after an airboat carrying 16 tourists overturned in a Louisiana swamp, authorities said Sunday. Three other passengers remained hospitalized.

Daniel Nanna, 31, of Newport Beach, Calif., died just before midnight Saturday, about seven hours after the Louisiana Swamp Tours boat overturned in three feet of water. An autopsy is planned, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Col. John Fortunato said Sunday.

Tsai Woo died of her injuries Sunday afternoon; her husband had flown in and was at her bedside, said Diane Angelico, spokeswoman for Charity Hospital. Woo’s hometown in California was not released.

Eleven other people were injured when the boat — a flat-bottomed aluminum craft powered by a big fan at the rear — flipped in a swamp around Lake Salvador, about 20 miles south of New Orleans. Tourists flock to the area to see wildlife, including alligators, which often are lured to boats by dangling chicken meat from long poles.

The captain, Curtis Silver of Lafitte, was among eight people treated and released at emergency rooms.

The Coast Guard was investigating the accident.

Lt. Cmdr. Greg Depinet of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety office wouldn’t comment Sunday on whether the captain had been making quick maneuvers to thrill tourists from nearby Kenner and from California.

“We still haven’t totally confirmed what was taking place,” he said. “We have quite a few more passengers to interview before we can comment.”

Depinet said reports so far indicated that all passengers had been buckled in, meaning the accident wasn’t caused by tourists clustering to one side to look at an alligator or other animal.

The Swamp King is one of four 16-passenger airboats owned by Louisiana Swamp Tours, which boasts on its Web site that the airboats, made to run on inches of water, “are half ride and half tour” and “can make a 90-degree turn on a dime.”

Louisiana Swamp Tours owner Milton Walker Jr. was leading a tour Sunday and could not be reached for comment, an employee said.

“I’ve always felt as though we’ve been safe in operation,” Walker said Saturday night. “I never thought something like this could happen.”

The Coast Guard-certified tour boat was operated by a licensed captain, Walker said. The boat, rated for up to 18 people, had a top speed of 35 mph but cannot go that fast when fully loaded, he said.

Julie White- Haunted Louisiana swamp by Voodoo Priestess

The haunted swamp by a voodoo priestess.

The Voodoo priestess Julie White was more reclusive than most, although no less feared. It was said that White enjoyed trying to predict the demise of surrounding towns as she sat on the porch of her swamp shack, where she spent much of her time. She would also make arcane gestures at those who passed by, give people the evil eye, sing spooky songs about the day of her death, and generally freak people out. Despite her eccentric ways, White was seen as a potent oracle, and many looked to her predictions for signs of impending doom or misfortune. She was also known to deal out curses to those who wronged her, making her a figure who most people of the time were absolutely terrified of. One of her most persistent predictions was that there would be some sort of deadly cataclysmic disaster when she passed on, and she is often quoted as having said “One day I’m gonna die, and I’m gonna take all of you with me.” Chillingly, shortly before she died in 1915, White chanted this over and over again , and a horrible hurricane happened to hit the town on the day of her crowded funeral, causing a devastating tidal wave that swept through to kill hundreds of people and decimate three entire villages . According to the lore, Julie White, along with all of those who had been killed at her funeral, were unceremoniously buried in a mass grave somewhere in the swamp.

The 7 Best New Orleans Swamp Tours [2024 Reviews]

Discover your wild side during a swamp tour of Louisiana bayou country! Areas unreachable by foot can be easily experienced by boat tour. A boat ride through the canopied waterways and shallow waters of the bayou offers unparalleled views of its beauty.

An experienced boat captain adds to the adventure by providing in-depth information about the bayou wildlife and the unique habitat that houses hundreds of animal species.

Louisiana is one of two states famous for its bayous, which are intricately linked to Creole culture.

Most of us non-Cajuns would refer to a bayou as a “swamp”. Regardless of what you call it, bayous (or swamps) develop in low-lying areas, where water moves slowly and tons of wildlife thrives.

New Orleans Swamp Tour Reviews

1. best small group tour: small-group bayou airboat ride with transport from new orleans.

  • Departure point : Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure time : 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM
  • Duration : 4 hours (approx.)
  • Includes : Small-group tour, transport by van, hotel pickup and drop-off, 1.5-hour airboat ride

We recommend this New Orleans swamp tour for those adventurers who want an intimate, small-group tour experience. Also, for those who want to avoid doing any driving on their own, this tour offers hotel pickup and drop-off (make sure to see if your hotel is within their pickup radius).

This swamp tour takes place on an airboat, which is a unique experience if you’ve never tried it before (See more detail about airboat vs. traditional boats below the tour reviews).

Your excursion begins with an hour-long ride to Louisiana bayou country in an air conditioned van. Along the journey, your experienced tour guide/driver provides commentary and shares stories about the area. The driver is well-versed in local culture and history, so prepare to be entertained and informed en route to the swamp.

Once you arrive for the swamp portion of your tour, you board an airboat that will get you up close to wildlife and local flora. The boat’s captain shares his experiences and a wealth of information about the bayou’s unique ecosystem.

Just a few of the animals you may encounter while on the water include alligators, otters, deer, and a plethora of water fowl. More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. best adventure tour: high speed 16 passenger airboat ride from new orleans.

  • Departure point : Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure time : 8:00 AM, 10:20 AM, 12:30 PM, or 3:00 PM
  • Includes : Hotel pickup and drop-off, professional guide, live commentary on board, 100-minute airboat tour, transport from New Orleans to boat ride departure point

We recommend this New Orleans bayou tour for those who want a little adventure while seeing seeing the Louisiana swamp country in a high speed airboat.

After being picked up from your area hotel, you’ll be transported to Slidell, Louisiana which lies about a half hour north of New Orleans. This portion of the trip is narrated by an entertaining guide, which makes the ride fly by. The boat ride portion of your bayou tour lasts approximately 2 hours.

Your boat ride to the swamps and marshes will allow you to see all types of wildlife from bald eagles to alligators. These boat captains are native to the area, and thus, are very familiar with the ins and outs of the unique landscape that makes up the Louisiana bayou.

During the boat ride, you’re introduced to Honey Island Swamp, one of only a few protected wetlands in Louisiana. The tour also passes by a Cajun village.

As the boat glides along grassy, slow-moving waterways, you are practically guaranteed to see alligators sunning themselves on the shore or on fallen logs. Raccoons scamper along the reedy river shores. Other frequently sighted wildlife include mink, otter, wild boar, deer, and a variety of birds.

There is a gift shop conveniently located at the boat ride’s departure point, which is handy if you’ve forgotten a necessity like sunscreen or bug repellent. They even carry ponchos in the event the weather takes a turn for the worse.

3. Best Combination Tour: Swamp Airboat, 2 Plantation Tours & Lunch from New Orleans

  • Departure point: Hotel pickup included
  • Departure time : 8:00 AM
  • Duration : 9 hours
  • Includes : Hotel pickup and drop-off, transport by air-conditioned van, 2-hour airboat ride, entrance fees to visit 2 plantation mansions, gourmet lunch with soft drinks, coffee and tea

We recommend this swamp boat tour for those who prefer to travel with a smaller group and who are looking to combine adventure with a taste of Louisiana history.

After pickup from your area hotel, you’ll be transported by van to where your airboat departs (approximately 30 minutes from the city). During your transit from New Orleans to Paradis, a friendly driver/guide will share his in-depth understanding of the area.

Once fitted with ear muffs, you’re zipped away on for an exciting airboat adventure. Your captain keeps the group intrigued by making sure you see lots of different animals and the lesser-known areas of the swamp. He makes sure his passengers are safe, while ensuring they have fun through his amusing stories. The boat rides lasts approximately 2 hours.

After touring the swamp, your van takes your group to the historic antebellum mansion, Houmas House Plantation. With its construction taking place between 1787 and 1790, Destrehan is one of the oldest homes in Louisiana.

Here you will have lunch of some authentic Cajun cuisine in the dining room decorated like it would have been in the 1700s. After lunch at “Sugar Palace”, tour-goers will experience the plantation’s main house, an on-site museum that displays original artifacts and photos of the Houmas family.

Tour the weaving room, the outdoor kitchen, and cabins which offer a glimpse into the daily lives of enslaved men, women, and children. Tours are led by guides who are attired in dress typical of that era.

4. Best Value Tour: Large Airboat Swamp Tour with New Orleans Pick Up

  • Departure point: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Duration : 2 hours
  • Includes : Professional guide, all transportation

If it’s your first time in New Orleans, you’re likely somewhat overwhelmed with all there is to possibly do. However, I can’t recommend this next tour enough, even if you only have a few hours free on your schedule.

The Large Airboat Swamp Tour with New Orleans Pick Up is one of the convenient, most exciting tours you could possibly take in the area!

I really appreciate the fact that our tour guide came right up to our hotel lobby to pick us up in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle (if you’ve been here during the hotter months you know what a lifesaver that is!).

Right from the very beginning, they are super friendly and knowledgeable which only makes the experience that much more enriching.

They’re also there to answer any questions you may have, after offering a safety briefing. Then, it’s time to delve into the riddles that are woven into the heart of the enigmatic swamps surrounding New Orleans.

This ride on a traditional airboat captained by a bona fide swamp whisperer, is more fun than I thought one could have on murky waters such as these. As we cruised through the mesmerizing waterways, our guide would regale us with tales of these mysterious marches, the gators, and the history surrounding them.

To make the most of your time, the captain will alternate between soft cruising speeds and high-speed bursts while placing special attention to the surroundings. Everyone stays nice and safe while getting to capture amazing photos during stops along the way.

If you’re looking for something outside of your regular cookie-cutter tours, this is definitely the one for you.

5. Best Informative Tour: New Orleans High Speed 6-9 Passenger Airboat Tour

  • Departure time : Varies
  • Duration : 100 minutes to 4 hours
  • Includes : Boat ride tour, professional guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, stadium seating for improved views, experienced captains

If it’s your first time out on an airboat, I know you’re going to love having chosen this tour. The friendly guide only made it that much more engaging and exciting, with fun commentary and expert eyes to locate critters around us.

If that sounds fun to you, do yourself a favor and sign up for the New Orleans High Speed 6-9 Passenger Airboat Tour .

After undergoing a safety briefing, everyone was comfortable and excited to get out on the water with our expert guide/captain! The stadium-style seats on the airboat were pretty cool, and made it easy for everyone to get an unobstructed view of the water and surrounding marshes.

As you cruise along, your guide will point out various wildlife and plants that you may find interesting. We did see plenty of gators, which I’m not sure why I was surprised by!

While I definitely have a lot of respect for the animals, I lost a lot of the fear I had surrounding them. This was probably largely due to the fact that I saw our guide give them marshmallows like they were some kind of reptilian dog!

Apparently, that’s one of their favorite snacks, but I digress. This is truly one of the most compelling tours I’ve gone on, and gave us the opportunity to see animals like bald eagles, pelicans, owls, and of course, plenty of gators.

If you’re looking to get away from the busy city and into some more peace and quiet, this is the tour for you .

6. Small-Group Swamp Tour by Airboat with Downtown New Orleans Pickup

  • Departure : 9706 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072 (hotel pickup and drop-off available)
  • Departure Time : 9:40 AM
  • Includes : Airboat tour, professional guide

I feel that the best way to experience a swamp tour is with a small group for a more intimate setting. That way, you get to hear every splash of the water, every sound of a cricket, or critter swimming near the boat.

The Small-Group Swamp Tour by Airboat with Downtown New Orleans Pickup is the perfect option, where just you and the rest of your party get to experience this amazing atmosphere! This 2-hour tour is super easy to fit into even the busiest of schedules, and is a must-do for those visiting New Orleans for the first time.

Hotel pickup is available, so we didn’t even have to book separate transportation to the swamp. Upon arrival to the Barataria Preserve, we received a safety briefing and then climbed onto a one-of-a-kind airboat!

I could tell it was a high-quality, well-built vessel with a 454 Chevy Engine that took us shockingly fast across the water! The massive fan in the back blows air up to 200 miles per hour, and our captain zoomed through, slowing down when we arrived at particularly interesting sights.

We were able to see parts of the swamp that most others aren’t even able to see, which was exciting. The way the airboat seats are set up is so everyone gets full 360-degree views which is essential in this kind of environment.

The captain is a local and they know how to view wildlife safely (for humans and gators), so you’ll be able to see the critters in a way like never before. We were informed that the chance of seeing a gator varies depending on the season, but the experts still know exactly where to go for the best chance of spotting them.

7. New Orleans Small Group Airboat Swamp Tour

  • Departure : 9706 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072

This for me is that “biggest bang for your buck” swamp tours, as it’s one of the most affordable while still providing an insanely fun time! I had no idea New Orleans swamps could be so beautiful and captivating, but I was sure shown the authentic side of this region on the New Orleans Small Group Airboat Swamp Tour !

Limited to just 9 passengers, there’s no having to deal with large groups of people or fighting to hear the guide. This is a completely private tour with just you and your group, and I found it like an old friend taking us around on their airboat to show us the coolest sights around the swamps!

Of course, I don’t know anyone personally who has an airboat, but the friendliness of the captain sure made it feel that way. It doesn’t come with a hotel pickup like the other, but we found it easy to get to the Barataria Preserve where we hopped onto the airboat.

The stadium-style seating makes it easy for everyone to get a clear view of everything going on while still staying safe and secure. I wasn’t prepared for how speedy and noisy the tour was going to be, but there was a lot of laughing and excitement going on.

We saw plenty of gators, and even had one come all the way up to the boat which was initially pretty scary. After we saw a few, though, I realized that these guys seem more like scaly dog than a cold-blooded predator!

Our tour guide knew so much about the history of the area, geography, and wildlife, that it was an overall amazing tour that I’d love to go on again!

FAQ About New Orleans Airboat Swamp Tours

What is the difference between an airboat tour and flat bottom boat tour.

Airboats are propelled by enormous fans. The fans are so powerful and loud that passengers must wear ear muffs (provided by tour operators). Not only is this a fun way to tour the marshy areas surrounding New Orleans, airboat travel actually assists in navigating areas where a traditional propeller may get wrapped up in swampy reeds and grasses.

While passengers are given ear muffs to protect against the loud hum of an airboat’s giant fan, it should be noted that children or adults who are bothered by loud noises may find the sound unpleasant.

Flat bottom boats are able to accommodate larger groups and their narrow constructions allows them to make their way through tighter spots.

What should I bring for a swamp tour?

There are several essentials when visiting the swamp. Due to the humidity, insects, like pesky mosquitoes, may find their way to you, so a can of insect repellent is a good idea to have on hand.

Because you’ll be exposed to the sun for several hours, make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses. Packing a hat isn’t a bad idea, either. Don’t forget to hydrate. Take along plenty of water.

What is the best time of year to go on a swamp tour?

The time of year you choose to go on a swamp tour may mean compromising one thing for another. For example, if you hate the hot, muggy weather you’ll want to avoid the summer time, as that part of Louisiana can be oppressively hot and humid.

Alligators are out in droves during the summer months and tend to sneak into nests during the winter, so visiting during the cooler months may mean you see fewer of these reptiles. While gators may be more elusive during the winter months, you’re more likely to see bears or nutria during this season.

Spring offers a good mix of comfortable weather with animal sightings, as animals are out doing their thing and wildflowers are in full bloom.

There is sure to be an airboat adventure from New Orleans that will please everyone in your group. We hope our reviews help you to discover an adventure that will make lots of fun memories!

What should I wear on a swamp tour?

You should dress in clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. So don’t wear anything that you are not OK with getting ruined. If you’re touring anytime other than during the summer months, be sure to bring a windbreaker – especially during the winter when it can get cool.

Are there any age or health restrictions?

While airboat tours are fine for all ages and abilities, some tours have a minimum age requirement of 5 – 6 years old. Pregnant women and people with back or neck problems should not take airboat tours.

How many people are on the boat?

This will vary on the size of the boat. Large airboats have seating for about 27 people, while small airboats have seating for as few as 6 people. Small airboats are more personal and can get into more places, while large airboats are more stable and comfortable.

What if it rains?

Airboat tours operate rain or shine, unless there are severe weather conditions like lightning. Check forecast before your tour and be prepared for delays or cancellations.

How long are the airboat swamp tours?

Most tours are about 4 hours and that includes the ride there and back. Some are longer if they include a plantation tour or a food tour in New Orleans .

What is the best New Orleans airboat swamp tour?

If you don’t mind spending a little extra and want a full day of adventure and sight-seeing we recommend the Swamp Airboat, 2 Plantation Tours & Lunch from New Orleans . This tour combines an exciting day of seeing wildlife in the swamps along with seeing two of the plantations that show the history of the area.

What is the cheapest airboat tour in New Orleans?

If you are on a budget but would like to do a airboat tour of the swamps of New Orleans we recommend the High Speed 16 Passenger Airboat Ride From New Orleans . This tour is on a larger boat so you don’t get the personal experience of being on a smaller boat.

WGNO sports producer killed in New Orleans crash

Disclaimer: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Mark Deane, one of WGNO’s longtime sports producers , was tragically killed on Friday morning at the age of 48 after being hit in a New Orleans crash.

According to the Louisiana State Police, just after 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, troopers with LSP Troop B responded to the multi-vehicle crash, which occurred on the Crescent City Connection bridge.

Family, friends bid last farewell to Ed Daniels

The preliminary investigation reportedly showed that Deane was driving a 2021 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on the bridge when a 2000 Toyota Camry, driven by a man, identified as 29-year-old Jorge Sanchez-Martinez, of Gretna, struck the back of the motorcycle, causing Deane and the Yamaha to become airborne. The Camry then hit the back of a 2023 Nissan Rogue.

Deane was wearing a helmet at the time, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Sanchez-Martinez was properly retrained and wasn’t injured. The driver of the Nissan was also properly restrained and uninjured.

Impairment isn’t suspected in this case, but standard toxicology samples were still taken and submitted to be analyzed.

Sanchez-Martinez was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Lockup on negligent homicide and other traffic-related charges.

7-year-old struck, killed by school bus in Terrebonne Parish

“The New Orleans Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mark Deane, a respected sports producer at WGNO, who passed away this morning in a traffic fatality,” said New Orleans Police Department Superintendent of Police Anne Kirkpatrick. “Mark was not just a colleague to many in our media community, but a friend whose passion and dedication to his work left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Mark’s family, friends and the entire WGNO team during this difficult time.”

Deane’s loss is mourned by the entire WGNO family and comes as an especially crushing blow as it follows the recent loss of WGNO’s legendary Sportscaster Ed Daniels .

The crash remains under investigation.

Sanchez-Martinez was denied bond by a judge during a hearing on Saturday, Aug. 24. The next court hearing is set for Aug. 27 at 10 a.m.

Swamp Boat Cruise & Oak Alley Plantation Tour from New Orleans

7 hours and 45 minutes

This tour combines a visit to a River Road mansion and a cruise through the swamps of south Louisiana.

On our 9am & 11am departures - you'll experience a bygone era in one of the South’s most beautiful settings- Oak Alley Plantation , built in 1839. Marvel at the unbelievable quarter-mile long alley of 28 magnificent Oak trees, each over 250 years old, and view the majestic cypress trees in Louisiana’s swamps bordering the Mississippi River.

We also have a 1pm departure that visits Destrehan Plantation .  Visit our Swamp Boat Ride & Destrehan Planation Tour from New Orleans listing for more details on this 5 1/2 hour option.

Your guided tour will reveal the fascinating stories of the home and its history. Perhaps the most photographed plantation over the years, Oak Alley has been the setting for such motion pictures as Interview with a Vampire, Primary Colors, and the wedding of Bo and Hope from the daytime soap opera, Days of our Lives. On your journey to this historic setting, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain as you cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway (the flood outlet of the Mississippi River).   Travel past Whitney, Evergreen, Felicity & St. Joseph Plantations, ghosts of the past that front the Mississippi River, where rich crops of sugar cane, cotton, and indigo from these fertile lands once traveled to far ports of trade. Experience the following exhibits on 28 historic acres: Slavery at Oak Alley, East and West Gardens, Blacksmith Shop and Sugarcane Theater.  You can purchase lunch, a snack, salad or sandwich in the Plantation Café to enjoy at the picnic tables or aboard the coach.

Note: Due to the plantations home’s historic nature, access to the second floor is by stairs only. No video is allowed inside the plantation home. Walking the grounds is an integral part of this experience.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Everything You Need to Know About New Orleans Swamp Tours

  • Airboat Adventure
  • Airboat Tour
  • Alligator tour
  • Local Louisiana Attractions
  • New Orleans Activities

In this post-COVID era, travel is officially back in full swing. And Louisiana is one of the ideal destinations for families, celebrations, and impromptu trips. With the bustling city vibes of the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans, the peaceful calm of the swamps and rural surroundings, and everything in between, we’ve got something for every type of vacationer.

That means people from all over the country are flocking to New Orleans for outdoor activities, unique sightseeing, and a little adventure to go with their Hurricane cocktails and po boys.

If you’re planning to visit New Orleans any time soon, a swamp tour should be at the top of your list. It’s a picturesque way to see the Louisiana wildlife in its natural habitat, check out the unique world of the bayou, and even catch a cool breeze.

We’ve pulled together some of the research for you, so you know exactly what type of tour to take, and what to expect once you get there. Here’s everything you need to know before buying your tickets for a New Orleans swamp tour.

new orleans swamp tour death

Are swamp tours open in New Orleans?

Yes, swamp tours are going strong in the summer of 2021.

This open-air adventure is actually one of the safest activities you can book during your trip to New Orleans. You’ll be outside enjoying the fresh air, far away from the rowdy New Orleans crowds. Local Louisiana tour companies are also taking every precaution to ensure visitors are safe and confident taking their bayou tour.

If you’d like to reserve a private boat for your group tour, give us a call and we’ll set up a private, guided tour experience.

Are swamp tours safe?

Yes, New Orleans swamp tours are perfectly safe for people of all ages. Every boat is equipped with life preservers and safety gear, and led by a bayou-raised, local tour guide who knows the ins and outs of the bayou.

Louisiana boat captains know the local wildlife better than anyone. They’re skilled at identifying alligators and wild boar from afar so they carefully approach the wildlife without alarming them, or you. Even when you encounter wild gators, you can rest assured that your tour guide is a pro at giving you the best view, without endangering anyone on the boat or disrupting the natural environment. So you can get that coveted alligator photo without ever worrying about your own safety.

Airboat Adventures is also taking extra precautions to sanitize all surfaces on a regular basis. And since you’ll be in the open air for the entire tour, this is truly one of the safest activities you can book in New Orleans. Check our COVID-19 notice here.

How much does a swamp tour cost?

Depending on the type of tour you take, tickets for a New Orleans swamp tour could cost anywhere from $30-$100. That’s a wide range, because you’ll need to consider what kind of boat you want to take a ride in, how reputable the tour company is, and whether you want to rent out a private boat for your own group.

Airboat Adventures boasts some of the most knowledgeable captains in the area, and offer swamp tours starting at $35 per person. If you want to get even closer to the bayou wildlife, you can book a seat on a smaller airboat for $89 per person. For that ticket price, you’ll enjoy the unique experience of viewing the bayou from a small airboat with up to 10 passengers (faster and peppier than the typical pontoon boat).

Are New Orleans swamp tours worth it?

Yes, your swamp tour is more than worth the price of admission: keep in mind that this is a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll only find in select parts of the country. It’s also much different from the more common New Orleans experiences, like walking Bourbon Street and taking historic house tours. (Don’t worry, there will be time for that after!). Need transportation? Don’t worry, Airboat Adventures also offers roundtrip transportation from downtown New Orleans for an additional $30 per person.

While on tour, you’ll sail past natural cypress trees that form the backdrop of breathtaking photos and life-long memories. And you can take advantage of your time with a local Louisiana native by asking your boat captain all your questions about Louisiana wildlife, history, and even culture.

After seeing real-life alligators, wild boar and other critters in their natural environment, a bayou tour is bound to be the highlight of your trip. Whether you’re traveling with a group, your family, or solo, swamp tours are truly worth the ticket price and travel time.

new orleans swamp tour death

What should I wear on a swamp tour?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes that can withstand a splash here and there. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, so you can easily board the boat (and pivot fast to catch every alligator shot!). If you have it handy, toss in a bottle of bug spray and sunscreen to be safe (even if it’s overcast in the morning; the weather in Louisiana is notorious for changing by the hour). Also, don’t forget your sunglasses!

And otherwise, keep your packing light. You’ll need to stow away everything you bring under a seat on the boat so it doesn’t slide around or get wet.

If you’re taking an airboat tour , remember that airboats pick up speed, so you may want to wear an extra layer in the fall and winter.

new orleans swamp tour death

What will I see on a New Orleans bayou tour?

You can expect to see alligators, a variety of bird life, and maybe even turtles and water snakes (from a safe distance!). An experienced guide will also point out the unique trees and plants that are native to the swamp environment. Depending on the tour, you may also see traditional Cajun fishing cabins where locals harvest crawfish and other seafood.

You’ll see different types of wildlife at certain times of day or year. If you have any questions about what you’ll see on your swamp adventure, contact a local tour company .

What’s the difference between an alligator and a crocodile?

You can easily tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile based on the shape of their snout: alligators have more rounded mouths, while crocodiles have longer, more narrow heads.

But if you see any massive reptile floating through a Louisiana swamp, you can be sure it’s an alligator. Only gators are native to Louisiana bayous; not crocodiles. Alligators continue to grow throughout their entire lifetime. They can live into their 50’s, and have been known to reach up to 500 lbs!

How long is a swamp tour?

Most bayou tours last around 2 hours, which is just enough time to explore the swamp, relax, and take as many photos as you can.

If you’re staying in downtown New Orleans, it will likely be a 45 minute drive to get out to the bayou depending on traffic, so keep that in mind when you’re planning your day. The tour itself is well worth the extra travel time, since you’ll see a whole other aspect of Louisiana that you won’t want to miss.

new orleans swamp tour death

What is an airboat?

An airboat is a flat-bottomed boat with a raised propeller. You can easily identify an airboat by the large, raised fan in the back that powers the boat forward.

They’re ideal for navigating shallow waters. Airboats have become increasingly popular for ecotours, since they can reach relatively high speeds, and are safe for the local environment. They originally gained popularity in Florida, but now you can enjoy the Louisiana bayou by airboat, too.

Should I take a swamp tour on an airboat or pontoon boat?

Some swamp tour companies specialize in airboat rides, while others offer tours in pontoon boats. The main difference is that pontoon boats are quieter and can’t go nearly as fast as airboats can.

For Louisiana swamp tours, many travelers prefer airboats : they go faster, which means you may get to explore more of the swamp in a short period of time. You’ll also enjoy a cool breeze as you speed through the bayou, which is especially refreshing during a New Orleans summer. Your airboat captain will always slow down and pause so you can get up close to the alligators, so you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Which swamp tours have the best reviews in New Orleans?

Airboat Adventures is one of the most highly ranked tour companies in New Orleans. They’ve earned 4.5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor , as well as a rating of 4.7 out of 5 on Google.

What are the best swamp tours in New Orleans?

Airboat Adventures offers some of the all-around best swamp tours in the area. They’re well-established, with a team of experienced boat captains who know exactly where to go to introduce you to alligators, wild boar, and more. You’ll learn all about the bayou, and the wide range of plants and animals that call Louisiana home.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back tour of the swamp, another well-regarded tour provider is Adventures of Jean Lafitte, offering pontoon boat tours.

Swamp tours are one of the most popular New Orleans activities, so you have options when it comes to choosing a tour company. Regardless of who you choose, you’ll want to reserve a spot with a tour company that’s earned plenty of positive reviews and recent customer testimonials .

About the Swamps

New Orleans is a city surrounded by swampland, virtually making it a low-lying island. In fact, it is second only to Death Valley as the lowest area in the country. The swamps of New Orleans are among its most beautiful attractions. The bayou is often considered a dark, foreboding territory which offers some of the wildest nature to be found on earth. Although considered mysterious by many, the swamps should be appreciated for their natural beauty and amazing plant and animal life. The list of wildlife in a cypress swamp is long (it is not uncommon to see alligators), and it is said that a list of the different shrubs and vines would fill a telephone book!

alligator in Louisiana swamp

As settlement spread, fewer places were left to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature. Eventually, swamps were recognized as a retreat for wildlife and a place where Louisianians could find solitude and enjoy a variety of recreational activities.

Our area swamps have also given rise to several legends. It is said that Jean Lafitte, the noted pirate and hero of the Battle of New Orleans, made a living off pirate booty worth millions buried in the marshes. The most famous stories of all swamp lore are the reported sightings of the legendary Bigfoot (a.k.a. the Honey Island Swamp Monster.) Sightings of the shy giant have been reported as far back as the earliest recorded contact with native Indians.
