Crystal Cruises Just Relaunched With the Only Nobu-Concept at Sea, and Will Take You to Some of the Most Spectacular Locations on Earth

Get ready to savor every bite.

Courtesy of Crystal

There it is. My absolute favorite dish in the world: chef Nobu Matsuhisa's black cod with miso . As it's set before me, I can't help but feel a tiny grin form on my face, knowing I'd be biting into a familiar but ever-delicious dish in mere seconds, made sweeter by the fact that I wasn't eating it in one of his famous haunts in Malibu, New York, or London. I was eating it in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

On a balmy summer day in July, I boarded the brand-new Serenity, a ship by the freshly relaunched Crystal Cruises . And when I mean fresh, I mean new with tags, paint barely dry, and a pool filled to the brim mere moments before I stepped aboard. Usually, I'd damper my expectations for a first-on cruise, but in this instance, I didn't have to. Because from bow to stern, including its flawless interior crew, it was already spectacular.

The journey back for Crystal Cruises has certainly been an epic one. In 2022, the cruise line's parent company was forced to auction off its two ships to settle debts, Maritime Executive reported . They were purchased by cruising and shipping icon Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio. Lefebvre d'Ovidio purchased the ships through his other investment in Abercrombie & Kent (A&K Travel Group), an already well-known and beloved brand for luxury land excursions, bringing together two powerhouses for one stellar new product. However, Lefebvre d'Ovidio didn't give his team years to develop and renovate the two ships. He gave them exactly 12 months. And nearly to the day, the ships were launched.

Stacey Leasca

“Some whispered, some shouted ‘they will not make it,’ but here we are,” Cristina Levis, CEO of A&K Travel Group, shared at a group event the night of our departure. “What happened in the last 12 months, in my opinion, is exceptional.”

The cruise certainly has a lot of new going on, from updated, more spacious rooms and suites to new itineraries all over the world, including voyages through the Mediterranean, Europe, Canada, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Australia, and a newly revamped gym and pickleball court on the top deck. Its interiors now look more akin to a 5-star hotel out of the Belmond or Dorchester collection than a cruise ship. However, there are a lot of classics returning too, like some 80% of the company’s previous staff, including the return of Crystal veteran Günter Lorenz, the vice president of food and beverage operations, who’s been with the company since 1991.

“There’s been a big evolution,” Lorenz shared about the refreshed menus onboard as we sit basking in the sun through the floor-to-ceiling windows at Tastes, one of the ship’s eleven distinct dining venues, this one a bit more low-key than the others. “Firstly, people now know more about food,” he said, crediting social media for that, adding because of just how snap-happy travelers are these days, “plating is even more important.”

Though Lorenz noted that the company likes to stay on top of food trends, it’s also focused on providing its guests with mainstay classics, including buffets where guests can find almost any dish they’re dreaming about. In fact, according to Lorenz, the chefs onboard have developed nearly 6,000 menu items, making it entirely possible to spend a lifetime eating onboard and never have the same thing twice. And as much of that as possible is sourced locally in port.

“Our chefs can go out and get the freshest fish or seafood or vegetables they need,” Lorenz explained, noting that, of course, this is still a cruise line, so mass orders are natural. However, regionally sourced cuisine “is all possible.”

And yes, all the dining here is outstanding, from the grab-n-go style buffet at Marketplace and the sit-down dining at Waterside to the Italian fine dining at Osteria d'Ovidio, right down to its ice cream shop, Scoops. However, if you were to book this cruise for one reservation and one reservation alone, it would have to be for Umi Uma, a restaurant and sushi restaurant by chef Nobu Matsuhisa that, much like the staff, has returned to Crystal bigger and better than ever.

"Nobu always says, 'If the guests want something, please try to do it. Even if we don't have it on the menu,'" Tokunaga Takashi, the executive chef at Umi Uma, said. "The most important thing is the guest."

As for what's refreshed at the restaurant, other than the decor, not much. And that's exactly what guests want. "We always put a Nobu signature plate on the menu," Takashi shared.

Here, those signatures include the aforementioned black cod with miso, which I tried to eat as slowly as possible, enjoying every morsel of the sweet meets savory, buttery smooth dish. This dish, after all, requires marinating the fish for at least two days, thus earning more than a mere moment on your tastebuds.

"We try to get guests smiling," Takashi says. "The yellowtail jalapeno dish is a signature to us. We make maybe a thousand plates a day of it. But for the guest, it may be a special day. This is maybe someone's birthday, a special event, a special date. That's why we always think this one single dish is the most important dish."

crystal cruises food

The bites from Umi Uma were, without question, the best onboard, but I'd be hard-pressed to find a meal I didn't devour with unadulterated glee throughout the sailing. I ate breakfast from the buffet on the back deck, watching as dolphins chased our ship from Italy to France, dug into freshly grated truffles over homemade pasta on an Abercrombie & Kent curated excursion in Tuscany after searching for the high-end mushroom alongside a local farmer and his truffle dog, Bianca, and went back for a personal record number of cones brimming with gelato at Scoops. And found myself surprised with bite after bite, thinking, really, this is all found on a cruise ship? Yes. And luckily for me, and you, it's all included in the cost of a ticket. (Sans excursions, of course.)

"My goal is when you leave the cruise, you should have gained two kilos,” Lorenz says with a laugh." And it's duty-free.”

Understanding the Dining Options on Crystal Cruises Serenity

Before we share our personal dining experiences sailing on the Crystal Cruises Serenity, the first question that usually pops into the mind is the dress code.

Therefore, you might want to hop over to our article that explains the dress code when sailing with Crystal Cruises: click here .

Dress codes on luxury cruise lines have become far more relaxed over the last decade.  So, I think you’re going to like it.

The Crystal Dining Room

First, we’ll start our discussion with Crystal Cruises main dining space, the Crystal Dining Room.

Warmly decorated with rich wood paneling, brass railing, crystal chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the grand Crystal Dining Room is one of the most elegant dining facilities at sea.  Sophisticated décor is enhanced by the finest of tabletop appointments, including Schott Zwiesel stemware, Villeroy & Boch porcelain, Sambonet silver, and Frette or Garnier Thiebaut linens.

Innovative menus boast a variety of international specialties, with regionally inspired dishes based on the itinerary, presented in either a “classic” style or “modern,” molecular gastronomy style.  Guests always have multiple courses to choose from: appetizers soups and salads; the highest quality meats, such as prime rib or pheasant; fresh fish, including lobster and salmon; indulgent and sugar-free desserts; and premium international wines and champagnes to accompany it all.  Remarkably, the Crystal Dining Room never repeats a menu during a cruise.

crystal_cruises_modern_cuisine_scallop_duo

I really enjoyed having essentially two menus each night.  Carol enjoys a more classic menu when she’s dining, where I love to explore new and innovative dishes.  So, I found myself selecting off of the modern menu most nights.

When contemplating the modern menu, think molecular gastronomy where advanced galley equipment is used and expanded local sourcing of the freshest ingredients for such dishes as scallop and tuna tartare with flavored citrus foam, white miso soup poured over, and olive oil “caviar” balls that explode with cold flavor when bitten into; a Shiraz-braised oxtail ragout served with an egg poached to silky perfection after almost an hour of slow cooking; and a re-imagined Strawberries Romanoff comprising a cotton candy dome that melts immediately upon having strawberry consommé poured over it, revealing a flourless fresh berry-almond cake with vanilla anglaise hidden underneath.

While I wouldn’t call myself a food critic, we have dined in some of the best restaurants in the world, and we found the cuisine in the Crystal Dining Room to be top shelf.  In fact, I enjoyed my first meal in the Crystal Dining Room so much, I leaned over to Carol and said, “let’s just eat here every night”.  It was that good.  Of course, she gave me a disapproving look, and said “no, we need to experience all of the restaurants”.

She was right of course.  But all that to say that the cuisine in the Crystal Dining Room is superb.  Three-star Michelin good?  No.  But very good indeed.  You won’t be disappointed.   In fact, I think you’ll be very pleased.

Crystal Cruises Perfect Choice Dining

crystal-cruises-perfect-choice-dining

Crystal Cruises has solved this problem with what they call Perfect Choice Dining. This unique concept allows you to choose between a classic main seating at 6:15, a late seating at 8:30, or dining by reservation (when and with whom you wish).

Once your cruise is fully paid, you may then reserve your personal dining times. Carol and I chose to be seated each night at 6:15 at a table of eight.  This allowed us to meet new people, make new friends, and get to know our waitstaff. For us, we find this to be a far more personal experience.

However, as we’ll discuss below, we were absent from our assigned table five nights as we were also exploring some of the other dining options on the ship, and one evening we chose to make a dining reservation in the Crystal Dining Room to have a more intimate dining experience with new friends we made aboard ship.

We like options and the Perfect Choice Dining concept gave us the ability to dine how and when we wanted.  Lastly, the Crystal Dining Room is open for breakfast and lunch with open seating.

A few of our Dining Photographs

Before we move on to some of the other dining choices available on the Crystal Cruises Serenity, I thought you might enjoy a few of the photographs we shot during our dining experiences aboard ship.

We didn’t capture any photographs dining in the Crystal Dining Room as we we chose to sit at a table of eight to make new friends.  Attempting to get a good photograph on a table filled with eight people as well as all of the dining accoutrements filling the table just didn’t seem practical.  However, in our other dining experiences, we requested a table for two so that we could capture some nice photographs for our readers to see.  Hope you enjoy them.

Specialty Restaurants

Crystal specialty restaurants provide an opportunity for guests to enjoy a variety of culinary experiences. In order to ensure that each guest has a chance to dine at Prego, Silk Road and the Sushi Bar at least once during their voyage, a maximum of one reservation per specialty restaurant will be confirmed per booking through their Guest Check-in/Priority Check-in and Planning Center (PCPC). All additional reservations or visits (i.e. walk-in dining) will be confirmed on board on a space available basis for a nominal fee of $30 per person, per dining experience.

While we certainly enjoyed the Crystal Dining Room, it is our strong opinion that each guest should make a complimentary reservation at Prego, Silk Road, and the Sushi Bar.  It’s best to do this immediately after your booking is completed.  However, if you ignore that advice, make it your priority to get these restaurants booked immediately after boarding.  These restaurants are much smaller than the Crystal Dining Room, are VERY popular, and if you wait too long, you’re going to be disappointed to learn that they have sold out.  Forewarned if forearmed.  Right?

Carol and I are big fans of Italian cuisine, so we gladly sprung for an additional $60 to enjoy a second night at Prego.  Yum. Yum. Yum.

prego_ravioli

Charming and romantic, Prego brings the flavors of Italy to Crystal Serenity.  The intimate European restaurant features classic and contemporary Italian dishes such as:

  • Carpaccio of Black Angus Beef, with Mustard Sauce and Caravaglio Capers
  • Minestra “Primavera di Verdura” Soup with Vegetables in Season, Tomato, Beans, and Macaroni Pasta, topped with Bread Crostini and Pesto
  • Lavender Honey-Roasted Pink Duck Breast, with Balsamic Cherries, Chestnut Cappuccino, and Salsify and Poached Radish
  • Paccheri and Swordfish with Mint, Basil, Capers, and Zucchini Ecrema

The tantalizing selection of desserts might include flavored lady fingers with light mascarpone cheese layers; a Nougatine Mousse with brandy cherries, cherry ice cream, and Frangelico schiuma; or a “Piedmontese” chocolate-almond flan.

I might also add that the Osso Buco was out of this world.  If you’re an Osso Buco fan, get it!

crystal_cruises_nobu_scallops

Silk Road restaurant features the eclectic cuisine of famed master chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa with dishes prepared by Nobu-trained chefs.  Matsuhisa redefined sushi with an innovative blending of classically styled Japanese foods with distinct Peruvian and European influences.  He personally guided The Sushi Bar’s intimate design and unveiled his own, fingerprint-proof line of fine china in The Sushi Bar and Silk Road during Crystal Serenity’s inaugural season.  While The Sushi Bar offers an assortment of Nobu’s signature sushi and sashimi, including Tiradito Nobu-style, and Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño, Silk Road presents more than two dozen of Nobu’s signature appetizers, soups, salads, entrées and desserts.  Entrée selections include such treats as:

  • Nobu-style Lobster with Truffle-Yuzu Sauce
  • Black Cod with Miso
  • Grilled Wagyu Beef Rib-Eye

The signature dessert is a Bento Box filled with Chocolate Soufflé Cake with Shiso Syrup and Sesame Ice Cream.

Carol and I enjoyed sampling all three of the entrées listed above.  All were wonderful, but I enjoyed the Black Cod the most.  If you’re a lover of fish, get it!  There a photo of my Black Cod in the photo slider above.

crystal_serenity_tastes_dish2

A custom-built open kitchen allows guests to watch.  While Tastes is open during the day for a “Late Risers Breakfast” and full lunch menu, including specialties such as traditional “home style” Chinese noodles and dumplings, a deconstructed grilled shrimp Caesar Salad, and freshly-ground Angus beef Manhattan Beach Burger. After 6:00 PM, the restaurant is transformed into a cool and casual evening eatery with dramatic lighting that showcases the trees, plants, and decorative screens.  Its new global-inspired menu was created in association with Sapphire Restaurants in Laguna Beach, CA, where acclaimed Chef Azmin Ghahreman offers cuisine with accents from around the globe.  Crystal’s talented chefs create dishes such as an Alsatian Tart, California Street Tacos, and Scottish-Cured Salmon, all designed to be shared via small plates.

When it comes to culinary delights, my palate loves to explore.  Therefore, I absolutely loved Tastes as I was able to explore the world’s cuisine in one spot and take my palate to places it has never been.  While Prego and Silk Road seem to get all of the specialty restaurant attention, don’t miss a dining experience at Tastes.  While we loved Prego and Silk Road, if I had the chance to go back to one of these restaurants today, I would pick Tastes for the opportunity to experience a culinary adventure.

Other Dining Options

lido

For casual meals, this indoor/outdoor venue features elaborate breakfast choices with exotic fruit, authentic Swiss muesli, fresh-baked breads and pastries, as well as made-to-order regular and egg white omelets, waffles, and pancakes, and Asian breakfast options for international guests.  Luncheon options include custom-made pastas and salads, a delicious selection of soups, carved meats, fresh fish, and sumptuous desserts, including sugar-free options.

As the Lido Café was very near our stateroom, we frequented this fabulous buffet for breakfast and lunch. The Swiss Muesli is ‘da bomb, and the selection is mind-boggling.

Trident Bar & Grill

This ultimate grill with a full bar serves a Late-Risers Breakfast from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Crystal Symphony, and lunch throughout the afternoon on both ships.  Among the casual choices are grilled hot dogs, made-to-order hamburgers, veggie and chicken burgers (with fresh-baked buns), tuna melts, two different wrap sandwiches each day, and more. The space brings the outside in with lush greenery-filled “living walls” on both ships. Crystal Symphony’s 37.7-foot wall, with plants creating a world map, was the industry’s first living wall at sea. Crystal Serenity went a step beyond with four living walls plus an herb garden for chefs.

My bride enjoys a good hamburger.  While I said we can get a good hamburger anywhere, she twisted my arm and got her hamburger fix at the Trident Bar & Grill.  If you too are a burger lover, you’ll enjoy this casual fare.

Trident Ice Cream Bar

For sweets on demand, the Trident Ice Cream Bar (called Scoops on Crystal Serenity) offers Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, freshly-made waffle cones, cookies, sundaes, shakes, sherbets, sugar-free ice cream and nonfat frozen yogurt with fresh berries and other toppings.  During the course of a cruise, 20 different ice creams (including low-carb), 12 homemade sherbets, and nonfat yogurts are offered.

While I don’t need it, I must confess to enjoying a couple of scoops of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia on three different occasions.

Distinctive to Crystal Cruises is the centrally located and highly popular European-inspired café, which is open all day—and late into the night.  In the a.m., guests can enjoy a continental breakfast with fresh croissants, breakfast pastries, smoked salmon and bagels served on The Bistro’s exclusive porcelain china custom-designed for Crystal by celebrated French artist Guy Buffet.  During the afternoon, guests can sip exotic coffee drinks or premium wines by the glass and savor rich pâtés, fresh fruits, international cheeses, charcuterie and freshly made tarts and cakes.  Wine, champagne, and digestif pairings continue into the evening, with more freshly-baked desserts, a chocolate fountain, and artisan cheese selection.

At the daily afternoon teatimes, delicious savories and sweets are accompanied by Mighty Leaf teas, the world’s finest whole leaf tea, served in special silk pouches.  The charming sunlit Palm Court, with its expansive picture windows, ‘greenery’, comfortable rattan furnishings, and soothing classical music, provides the perfect backdrop for this favored afternoon ritual.  Not to be missed are the themed specialty tea times, including the Mozart Tea, a visit to 18 th century Vienna with tea and Austrian pastries served by staff dressed in velvets and brocades, and an English Colonial Tea with scones served with whipped cream and jams, finger sandwiches and other sweets.

In-Stateroom Dining

The mark of any true luxury experience is service.  In keeping with Crystal Cruises’ commitment to providing the highest possible level of service, the line offers complimentary 24-hour in-stateroom dining to accommodate any guest at any time.  At sea or in port, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner in their rooms or on their private verandahs, served with the same precision and attention to detail found in the dining venues.  During lunch and dinner hours, guests may order their in-stateroom meals from the Crystal Dining Room, served course by course, if so desired.  Penthouse guests enjoy the added privilege of having in-stateroom dining available from specialty restaurants during dinner hours.

As I contemplate our dining experiences on the Crystal Serenity, the first thing that comes to mind is the wonderful variety of options available to Crystal Serenity cruisers.  Because this ship holds 1,000 people, and the ship was designed to give passengers a high “space ratio” ( learn more about that here ), there was considerably more space available to offer Crystal guests a variety of dining options.  So while we certainly enjoyed the dining experiences we’ve had on a smaller 300 passenger luxury sailing vessel, it was very nice to have all of these different options available.

However, I do leave the ship with one regret: for some crazy unknown reason, we didn’t make a reservation in The Sushi Bar.  Carol and I will be sailing the Crystal Serenity again next fall from NYC to Montreal. I intend to fix this problem on that sailing.

Overall, Carol and I were very impressed with the quality of the dining experiences aboard the Crystal Serenity.  When one considers the quantity of food coming out of these kitchens each day, it seems to me a modern miracle that the quality of the cuisine aboard the Crystal Serenity is equal to some of the finest restaurants in the world.

Bottom line , you’re going to love the dining experiences aboard the Crystal Serenity, and this is one of the many reasons that Crystal Cruises has enjoyed ‘best-of-the-best” ratings for decades.

Would like to know if caviar is served on the Crystal Serenity! Is it served on every voyage and destination this ship sails to?

Hi John and Marianne,

Yes, we enjoyed caviar on the Crystal Serenity. However, I can say for sure if it is offered on every voyage and destination. You might want to ask Crystal that question. 🙂

Bars and Restaurants

Where serenity sails, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment, family-friendly offerings, accessibility.

Spending a week on Crystal Serenity feels like staying at a resort that families have been visiting for 20 years. On a July cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, most of the passengers I met had sailed on Serenity many times before. Veteran Crystal cruiser Keith Steiner regaled me with stories of the paddle tennis tournament he plays in every year, alongside the crew, on the line’s world cruises. Linda Glenn, who has been on 130 Crystal cruises, promised to show me the beautiful ring her husband, Stanley, commissioned from the jeweler who supplies Serenity ’s boutique. And the Glenns' grandson, Tate, has been sailing on Crystal Serenity since he was two. He’s 19 now.

What’s strange about all this is I met these folks on Crystal Serenity ’s inaugural journey.

Crystal Serenity

  • Crystal Cruises has the only Nobu restaurants at sea. On Serenity, Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian spot by chef Nobu Matsuhisa is one of the best restaurants on board.
  • The 740-passenger ship has all ocean-view rooms — and most have balconies — plus 24/7 butler service.
  • Crystal Cruises is known for its exceptional world cruises, and Serenity embarks on its first around-the-world tour in 2024.

Here’s what happened: Crystal Serenity first launched in 2003. To put a time stamp on that, Julie Andrews was named the godmother of Serenity , and “The Princess Diaries” had come out two years before. Fast forward 19 years and Crystal went bankrupt in fairly spectacular fashion in early 2022. Seventeen months later, the brand is known simply as Crystal and is a part of A&K Travel Group, the holding company backed by travel luminaries Geoffrey Kent, of Abercrombie & Kent, and Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, the onetime chairman of Silversea. Since taking the helm, A&K has invested $150 million in Crystal, giving Serenity and sibling ship Crystal Symphony stem-to-stern overhauls. Both ships returned to service in the summer of 2023.

Courtesy of Crystal Cruises

“It’s Crystal enhanced,” Steiner told me, as we sailed from Corsica to Barcelona on a particularly rocky day on the Mediterranean. The retired telecom executive has been on 120 Crystal cruises with his wife, Anne Marie. “Every person we've spoken to would say, from the moment they came on, it feels, it looks, it smells like Crystal. It is Crystal.”

That’s largely because 80 percent of the Crystal Serenity ’s crew is back on board. My butler, Jijo, who had been with Crystal for 17 years before the bankruptcy, knew every one of his guests on that first sailing — I was his only newcomer. Jijo unpacked my suitcase, handled my laundry and my airport transfer, routinely surprised me with an afternoon iced tea, and accompanied me to the IT office when my Wi-Fi went out. When I wasn’t feeling well, he brought me several rounds of chicken consumé, toast, and mint tea as I watched “Top Gun: Maverick” while hiding under Jesurum 1870 bedding. It was, due respect to my husband, even better care than I would’ve gotten back home.

Here, everything you need to know about the new and improved Crystal Serenity — and what it was like to be one of the first on board.

My 430-square-foot Sapphire Veranda Suite — where I enjoyed my daily iced teas on the balcony, slept phenomenally well on the custom Jesurum 1870 bedding, and reveled in the spaciousness of the shower — was gutted in 2023 and completely redone by cruise ship designer GEM. But A&K, committed to keeping the returning guests happy, left some Sapphire Veranda Suites as they were — including the room Linda Glenn has booked since 2009.

There are no inside accommodations on the 545-room Crystal Serenity — even the entry-level offering has an ocean view. The smallest rooms, at 215 square feet, are the doubles with an ocean view, singles with an ocean view, and doubles with a veranda. Every accommodation comes with 24/7 butler service.

The most luxurious of Serenity' s 377 suites is the 1,275-square-foot Crystal Penthouse. The bathroom — with a full peachflower marble tub — is exquisite, as is the plentiful balcony space. And while most guests get only one reservation at each of the specialty restaurants, Umi Uma and Osteria d’Ovidio, reservations for the penthouse guests are unlimited, and they can order from both directly to their room.

Linda, like most Crystal die-hards, still accidentally calls the Italian restaurant, Osteria D’Ovidio, by its old name, but says the space, overhauled by Tillberg of Sweden, feels completely different. "I think the food's even better," Stanley adds. Umi Uma — one of two Nobus at sea, the other on Crystal Symphony — has brand-new interiors, too. The Umi Uma menu hasn’t changed, which is a relief, because it turns out nothing bonds two people on a ship quite like a shared affinity for Nobu’s black-miso cod and decadent sashimi.

Maya Kachroo-Levine/Travel + Leisure

With one coveted culinary name already, Cristina Levis, A&K and Crystal Cruises CEO, told me she’s working to “bring home another celebrity chef” for Osteria. (Though, even without a Michelin-touted chef at the helm of Osteria, I loved the lobster acquasale and gnocchi blanketed in porcini mushroom ragout.) The best Italian export on board, however, is served six decks above Osteria at the gelato bar, Scoops. Levis is from a family of gelato makers, and it shows; the stracciatella and coffee gelato I savored on a poolside couch as we sailed from Portofino, Italy, was better than the cone I had in port.

I also grew very attached to the buffet at Marketplace — it is truly next-level, with a carving station, a great salad bar, some excellent Indian food (who knew you could find phenomenal butter chicken on an Italian-owned ship?), and fresh seafood. I had terrific moules-frites one afternoon, with Rotterdam-sourced mussels in a delicate, garlicky cream sauce, seated outside in the sun, with a beautiful view of Cannes. This is not your average buffet. There’s also the main dining room, Waterside, open for three meals a day; Tastes Kitchen & Bar, with a lovely indoor-outdoor terrace that makes you feel like you’re on the corner of a charming European street; and a grill that does burgers and sandwiches for lunch — and excellent pancakes in the morning.

As for bars, I was partial to the Avenue Saloon — where Joel Spire plays piano every night and there’s a great Manhattan menu. Worth noting, there’s also an extensive non-alcoholic and low-ABV cocktail menu at Avenue Saloon, for those looking for booze-free nightlife.

In 2023, Serenity will sail in North America, along the New England coast in the fall and into Canada, exploring Quebec’s Saint Lawrence River. In the winter, the ship will cruise the Caribbean, stopping in ports like St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Looking ahead to 2024, the ship will begin a five-continent world cruise — the first since A&K bought Crystal — cruising French Polynesia, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, South America, and in Europe, winding up in the Mediterranean Sea again next summer. The 2025 lineup was just announced, too; learn more about the sailings here .

As Crystal becomes more ingrained in the A&K family, “we will bring to Crystal what A&K does best, which is the excursions,” Levis said. Starting in 2025, the cruise line intends to roll out packages that let travelers leave the ship for a few days, knock out a once-in-a-lifetime tour, and then hop back on board.

While I had slight FOMO just hearing about travelers slipping off to Machu Picchu for an A&K adventure before rejoining the cruise in Lima, my travel envy dissipated as soon as I went on my first excursion. When we docked in Livorno, Italy, I joined a small group on a truffle-hunting excursion, following a sweet pup, Bianca, through a cluster of oak trees at Vialto Farms, a 1,000-year-old farmhouse in Tuscany. After glasses of cold vermentino, we dug into pasta in a light cream sauce topped with freshly grated truffles, followed by a truffle-covered fried egg. A few days later, on Corsica, a bus whisked a group of us to Domaine Orsini, for a wine tasting and a relaxing stint on the covered patio overlooking the island. And before I disembarked the ship in Barcelona, I crashed an evening excursion to the trendy El Born neighborhood, where our 10-person group shared a barrage of Spanish tortilla, patatas bravas , and croquetas at Tapeo.

The pool deck — in close proximity to the gelato bar – on deck 12 feels like a relaxed, exclusive Mediterranean beach club. One deck up, there’s a fitness center with Technogym equipment and workout classes, plus pickle ball and paddle tennis courts close by. The spa has a gorgeous, light-wood sauna with a picture window — perhaps my favorite place to watch the world go by — and an extensive treatment menu. I was extremely impressed with my dynamic biotech resurfacing facial and noticed the effects of the healing LED blue-light mask, which dissolves dead skin, for a full week after the treatment.

As for the entertainment, while I didn’t stray much from Pete’s piano in the Avenue Saloon, there are standup comedy and musical theater shows at the Stardust Club, Galaxy Lounge, and the Hollywood Theater. Crystal Cove bar is a great spot to catch live music (classical, jazz, piano, and even the occasional rock moment).

Also of note are the educational seminars, held daily, with guest speakers who lecture on upcoming destinations and give in-depth talks into their industries — whether that’s sports, media, or “even the occasional astronaut,” per Crystal’s website.

There is certainly a kids’ club on Serenity and children are welcome. In fact, children grow up on this ship, coming on the holiday cruise every year, and making lifelong friends — as I learned from my friend Tate. Waves and Fantasia are the kids’- and teens’-only spaces on board. Personally, though, I would come on Crystal with a spouse, longterm travel partner, grown-up family members, close friends, or even solo.

There are eight ADA rooms on Crystal Serenity — some aquamarine veranda suites and some aquamarine ocean-view suites. According to a Crystal spokesperson, the ADA suites "are designed to accommodate guests with additional needs or who are wheelchair bound. The furniture can accommodate a wheelchair or scooter, there is extra space between beds, more room in the living area for easy movement, and the bathroom is larger with a roll-in shower, fold-down shower bench, and easy-to-reach shower head and sink faucet. Additional equipment is available upon request, such as rubber shower mats, shower stools, and a shower bench."

Vegan dishes, non-alcoholic cocktails: What you missed in cruise food news this week

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Heads up, foodies: Several cruise lines announced new food and beverage offerings this week.

Crystal – formerly Crystal Cruises – revealed the return of a guest-favorite restaurant, while Windstar Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line shared new vegan and non-alcoholic menu items, respectively.

We've rounded up the latest in cruise food news below.

Crystal brings back UMI UMA by Nobu

When Crystal relaunches this summer , it will also bring back UMI UMA by Nobu Matsuhisa Restaurant and Sushi Bar, the line said Wednesday.

The specialty eatery features dishes created by famed chef Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa, with signature entrees including Wagyu beef filet steak and Nobu-style black cod. The restaurant will be available on both the line's Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ships.

Cooking at sea: Regent Seven Seas will sail 11 new culinary cruises through 2025

"It wouldn't be Crystal without having one of the most popular restaurants UMI UMA back onboard when the new Crystal sets sail," Bernie Leypold, the line's senior vice president, hotel operations, said in a news release .

For cruises 11 days or shorter, passengers can make one complimentary reservation per person, while those on sailings longer than 11 days can make two reservations at no charge. After that, guests can make more reservations for a $50 fee per person.

Windstar Cruises introduces plant-based menu

Windstar will introduce a new vegan menu throughout its fleet this summer, the line said Tuesday. The menu was created in partnership with the National Health Association, and items will be "prepared without added salt, oil, and sugar," as well as gluten-free, according to a news release.

The line plans to roll out the program on its yachts in June and has started training its culinary team to make the dishes.

"The National Health Association points out that vegetarian and vegan diets are not always healthy, and for meals to be truly health-promoting, they also need to be minimally processed and prepared," Peter Tobler, Windstar’s director of hotel operations, said in a news release . "We've seen an increased demand for whole-food, plant-based dishes from our customers, and we're really excited to work with the NHA to bring them something that's nutritious and delicious."

Don't stress about your meals on vacation: How to take a cruise if you have dietary restrictions

Menu items include baked cauliflower croquettes with salsa verde and sautéed spinach, penne rigate pasta with vegetables and espelette pepper sauce, and tahini brownies with strawberries. "Vegetarian options, as well as the line’s existing omnivore menu items, will continue to be served as usual," the line said in the release.

Carnival adds new non-alcoholic cocktails

Carnival is now offering non-alcoholic versions of some passenger-favorite drinks at its Alchemy Bar, the line said Tuesday. The drinks are made with Lyre's non-alcoholic spirits.

“Our new partnership with Lyre’s gives guests who want non-alcoholic cocktails the best options at sea," Zachary Sulkes, Carnival’s senior director of beverage operations, said in a news release .

Passengers can order drinks like The Perfect Storm, made with strawberry puree, lime, rosemary and Lyre's Dry London in place of vodka, or The Remedy with orange juice, lime juice, pineapple and Lyre's Spiced Cane and White Cane spirits, in place of dark and coconut rum.

The drinks are included in the CHEERS! beverage program, which costs $59.95 per person each day, plus an 18% service charge, prior to the sailing, or $64.95 per person per day, plus an 18% service charge, when bought on board, according to Carnival's website . They can also be purchased a la carte.

Guests can find Alchemy Bar on almost all Carnival ships sailing from the U.S. However, on ships homeported in Australia, the new non-alcoholic drinks will be available "at a later date," the line said in the release.

6 Top Luxury Alaska Cruises for 2024 & Beyond

C ruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. The 740-guest luxury vessel was refurbished in 2023 and features the line's signature top-notch service, elegant interiors and suites, and personal butler service in every room category.

Other perks and amenities include plush bathrobes and Sicily's Ortigia bath products; an impressive passenger-to-crew ratio; prepaid gratuities; complimentary beverages; and outstanding cuisine, including Umi Uma (an exclusive Nobu restaurant at sea, available only on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ). Guests can also feast on Italian cuisine at Osteria d'Ovidio; book an exclusive dining experience at The Vintage Room; indulge in Parisian cafe-style fare at The Bistro; opt for American cuisine at Waterside Restaurant or take their pick of several other casual indoor and alfresco options.

Cruisers also have their selection of unique shore experiences curated by Crystal's parent company A&K Travel Group, such as a ride on the world's largest zip line in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point); dog sledding and glacier flightseeing in Skagway; fishing and wilderness dining in Ketchikan and the Wildlife Quest and Fin Island Lodge experience in Sitka, boasting a feast of Alaska king crab and wild salmon.

Crystal offers seven- and eight-night round-trip voyages from Vancouver , as well as one-way cruises from Vancouver or Seward, Alaska. Select itineraries – like the July 30, 2024, voyage from Vancouver to Seward – offer a scenic cruising day in the Seymour Narrows in British Columbia. On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Viking Ocean Cruises' 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise is available on 11 dates during the 2024 season. It sails from Vancouver to Seward (or the reverse) on the 930-passenger Viking Orion . In 2025, the line offers the same itinerary on 22 dates between May and September, split between Viking Orion and its sister ship, the 930-passenger Viking Sea .

Viking's destination-focused itineraries are curated for travelers who are interested in history, science, culture and cuisine, as they feature onboard enrichment like lectures by Viking's resident historians. You'll also find regionally inspired dishes in The Restaurant and special access to unique tours and excursions ashore.

The line's mostly all-inclusive fares cover accommodations in spacious all-veranda staterooms and suites; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; meals at all the dining venues; one shore excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and bottled water; complimentary access to The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center; and other upscale amenities.

Voyages traveling northbound from Vancouver include one day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. The eighth day of the cruise sails through picturesque Yakutat Bay, which includes the Hubbard Glacier. The ship then calls on Valdez, Alaska, before the trip ends with two days in Seward.

While in Valdez, take an optional tour to explore the incredible scenery surrounding the small fishing town. Viking offers a kayaking trip to see the Valdez Glacier; a scenic cruise through picturesque Prince William Sound to view the Columbia Glacier; a wildlife cruise where you can look for humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea otters and bald eagles; a helicopter ride over the area's rugged, icy wilderness; or a UTV adventure through the Chugach Mountains to Mineral Creek Canyon.

Seabourn Cruise Line

The Ultimate Guide To Your Caribbean Holiday

By Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon | Last Updated on September 4, 2024

If you're headed to the Caribbean on one of the 2024 cruises on offer, I have one thing to say: Welcome! I lived in Jamaica for decades, travel to the world's favourite warm-weather destination for work (as a travel writer) at least twice a month and am proud to call myself the region's biggest fan. So I couldn't be happier to share my home with you as you set sail on your Caribbean holiday.

Caribbean cruises are a great way to see the region, whether you're getting a taste of the islands on new ships like Utopia of the Seas ®  and  Icon of the Seas ® or returning to make memories at your favourite haunts on more intimate options like Enchantment of the Seas ® . There are almost two dozen Royal Caribbean ships that sail to the region on three basic itineraries — eastern, southern and western.

With year-round sunshine, there's never a bad time to explore everything this part of the world has to offer. In the cooler months, the destination is a welcome — and warming — balm to winter-weary souls. Come summertime, lower prices make it easier on travellers' budgets. Although summer coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, modern meteorological technology ensures that ships have plenty of notice of pending storms, so the captain can avoid any trouble spots and simply steer to fair-weather ports, where you'll have just as much fun.

The Caribbean comprises more than a million square miles, and cruise ships help you explore this captivating corner of the world. From sandy Jamaican beaches on western Caribbean cruises to the forested emerald peaks of St. Lucia on eastern Caribbean sailings to colourful waterfront capitals such as Curaçao's Willemstad on southern Caribbean cruises, there's plenty to see and do. Read on for where cruises can take you in this region of sand and sun.

Marigot Bay Sailboats, Castries St. Lucia

Western Caribbean

Stingrays Together Swimming, George Town, Grand Cayman

The western Caribbean is home to some of the most popular islands in the world, including Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico's Cozumel. It's also where you'll find the rugged Central American standout, Belize. But there are also beautiful, lesser-known gems — such as Roatán, Honduras — that are ripe for exploration.

I lived in Jamaica for decades, so excuse me if I'm biased (#sorrynotsorry) when I say that the Caribbean's largest English-speaking island is the total package. Jamaica cruises are the perfect introduction to the land of rum, reggae and Rastafarianism. Fuel your Jamaican jaunt with a piping-hot patty, which can come filled with chicken, beef or vegetables. Island food lovers are staunch fans of either those from Tastee or Juici bakeries (I'm forever Team Tastee, but you should try both and decide for yourself).

The crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounding Grand Cayman are where scuba diving first became popular as a recreational activity, so divers, snorkelers and swimmers will love it here. Whether you're a swimmer or not, don't leave the island (the largest of three Cayman Islands) without a visit to Stingray City, a nearby sandbar where you can stand knee-deep in the shallows, feeding chum to Southern Atlantic stingrays that weigh as much as 90 kilos. Good luck is said to follow those brave enough to smooch them, so pucker up!

In Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the approximately 480-square-kilometre island of Cozumel boasts the world's second-largest barrier reef, making it another must for snorkelers and divers. More of a landlubber? Hop on a 45-minute ferry over to Playa del Carmen, a boho beach town on the mainland, where you can chill shoreside and stroll Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), checking out its bars and boutiques.

Headed for Costa Maya? I have fond memories of this Mexican port, where I hopped on the ship's shuttle to the beach at Mahahual and spent the day lazing on sugar-fine sands and eating my body weight in guacamole and chips at beachfront restaurants. Trust me, on Mexico cruises, this is time well spent! Conversely, Belize City is a jumping-off point for people who want to do much more than bask on the beach. Active and adventurous types can zipline through the jungle and tour ancient Mayan ruins. Or swim and snorkel with (friendly, I swear!) nurse sharks and stingrays at the appropriately named Shark Ray Alley.

Eastern Caribbean

Hibiscus Falls Daytime, Roseau Dominica

Eastern Caribbean cruises may take you from The Bahamas' calm, pale blue waters to the frothy surfer-ready swells off Barbados's east coast, stopping at plenty of paradises in between.

The bevy of boutiques on ships like Freedom of the Seas ®  and Quantum of the Seas ®  are tempting. And in the Bahamian capital of Nassau and neighbouring Paradise Island, there are lots of other opportunities to snag duty-free designer baubles on Bahamas cruises. Savvy shoppers snap them up, but leave room in their budgets for locally made souvenirs. Like handwoven straw baskets, lamps made from conch shells and distinctive batik clothing and home accessories made from the islands' Androsia fabrics. Shop until you drop, and then raise a toast to your retail smarts at the nearest beach bar with a Goombay Smash, the potent national cocktail made with four types of dark and golden rums. It's also easy to find a bargain in the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix, and not just because they both boast duty-free stores galore.

If you're an outdoorsy type (or cruising with one), islands such as Dominica, St. Lucia and Puerto Rico have your name on them. Known as "the nature island," lush and mountainous Dominica will live on as your jungle fantasy come to life. Take a leisurely boat ride through the mangroves on the Indian River (one of the island's 365 waterways), where you'll spot river birds and see the house used in one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Or slip on your sneakers and hike a section of the Waitukubuli National Trail, a 185-kilometre route that winds past waterfalls and over mountains. St. Lucia is famous for its twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons, which preside over the island's southwest coast. The hours-long hike up Gros Piton is probably best left to the fittest in your crew. But a short drive from the port in the northern capital of Castries is the 20-minute hike to the colonial-era fort at Pigeon Island National Park, an active excursion the entire family can enjoy. There's no training required, and dreamy Caribbean views are included. My best tip: Wear your swimsuit so you can cool off at the park's beach before Navigator of the Seas ®  whisks you away.

In Puerto Rico, there are 38 kilometres of hiking trails suitable for all levels at El Yunque National Forest, about an hour's drive from the port in San Juan. It's one of the smallest United States national forests but the most diverse, with 250 species of trees, 150 types of ferns and 97 species of birds. Don't forget your camera.

Searching for some local flavour? You don't have to spend a fortune on your Caribbean holiday to enjoy it. On Dominican Republic cruises, the must-try is mamajuana, a potent local liqueur made with steeped leaves, tree bark, herbs and spices. The (acquired) taste is a lot like port, and it can be drunk as a digestif. But mamajuana's reportedly aphrodisiac properties are what make it so popular, so drink responsibly. Try a fried fish cutter (sandwich) in Barbados, where Cuzz's food truck on Bridgetown's Pebbles Beach is a classic. My serving suggestion: Accompany it with a Caribbean view and local brew (try Banks beer) as you sit on the sand. Those with a taste for tropical tipples shouldn't leave San Juan without a piña colada. The famous drink is the island's national cocktail, invented here at either the Caribe Hilton Hotel or at the Old San Juan bar Barrachina, depending on who you speak to. Sample both — you can't go wrong with either one.

Southern Caribbean

Visiting a drove of donkeys on a beach in Aruba. The Caribbean.

Adventure? Check. History? Mouthwatering cuisine and rummy cocktails? Check and check. The southern slice of the Caribbean ticks all the boxes.

No doubt you'll be hitting a Caribbean beach (or three) on your Caribbean cruise, but beyond the sand, a rip-roaring adventure awaits. On Aruba, for example, you can tour Arikok National Park's sprawling and cacti-studded desert landscape on horseback or in an all-terrain vehicle. Bring sunglasses and a hat, because things will get dusty. At Labadee — which is on a small number of southern Caribbean itineraries — you can get a bird's-eye view of Haiti's palm-fringed coastline on the almost one-kilometre-long Dragon's Breath Flight Line, which zips you through the trees at up to 80 kilometres an hour. On the neighbouring island of Curaçao, the Ostrich Farm is one of the Caribbean's most unlikely adventures. But where else will you have the chance to stand on an ostrich egg to find out that it won't crack under your weight? The Scenic Railway, also known as the "sugar train," on St. Kitts circumnavigates the island on tracks formerly used to transport sugarcane from plantations to the port. It offers a beautiful ride through the island's interior.

History also comes to life in Puerto Rico at the Spanish colonial fort of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, where you can tour the more-than-500-year-old bastion and snap a selfie in one of its iconic sentry boxes, called garitas . There's also St. Kitts's Brimstone Hill, which took more than a century to build and is considered one of the finest examples of military architecture remaining today.

After a day of exploration, you'll need something to quench your thirst. In the Caribbean, you can do way better than plain water. Visiting Bonaire is the perfect opportunity to try Cadushy, a cactus liqueur made here from a succulent known locally as kadushi. It'll make a great addition to your home bar, as will guavaberry liqueur from St. Maarten. Pick up a bottle of this island spirit — made from aged rum, cane sugar and local guavaberries — when the ship pulls into Philipsburg for a flavorful souvenir. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, connoisseurs will appreciate rhum agricole , a potent and funky cousin of the classic Caribbean spirit. It's made from sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Raise a glass and toast to your Caribbean dreams come true!

The Love Boat 's Fred Grandy Reveals Billy Crystal Auditioned for the Role of Gopher But 'He Really Hated the Script'

"I was the last man standing when it came to casting this part," the actor-turned-politician said on Princess Cruises' 2024 Love Boat Celebration at Sea

  • The Love Boat  stars Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange and Jill Whelan set sail on Princess Cruises'  The Love Boat  Celebration at Sea that left out of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 31 and traveled through New England and Canada for seven nights
  • Grandy, who played purser Burl "Gopher" Smith, recalled during a Q&A on the Enchanted Princess that he went up against Billy Crystal for the role
  • The actor and politician told PEOPLE he doesn't think "there is a group that's as tight knit professionally and personally" as the cast of The Love Boat

Fred Grandy acknowledges he might not have been the first choice to play purser Burl "Gopher" Smith on  The Love Boat .

“I was the last man standing when it came to casting this part,” Grandy, 76, said during The   Love Boat : Behind the Scenes Stories panel on  Princess Cruises’   The Love Boat  Celebration at Sea 2024 sailing.

One actor also in the running: Billy Crystal . “Billy wound up doing a show that we wrote called The Kissing Bandit ,” Grandy said at the Q&A alongside castmates Bernie Kopell ,  Ted Lange  and  Jill Whelan . "A lovely guy, very funny and not so full of himself. But I remember it was somewhat of a lesson in humility when he told me how much he really hated the script.”

Kopell, 91, took over playing the ship’s doctor from Dick Van Patten, who held the role in the first two pilots for The Love Boat .

“All of a sudden we find out that Dick Van Patten was under contract to ABC. They pulled him out to do Eight Is Enough , and it opened it up for every walk-in actor to audition for the role of the doctor, including me,” Kopell said on board the Enchanted Princess. “I auditioned and this guy auditioned, the other guy auditioned and after a while, my agent called and screamed into the phone, ‘You got the part!’”

The Get Smart star said the role “changed my life," adding, “It was just such a treat and I've been so grateful for that life-changing experience and here I am, still working at the age of 91.”

Princess Cruises

The Love Boat ran for 10 seasons, and the cast has remained close. Grandy, Lange, 76, and Whelan, 57, costarred in the play  I’m Not Rappaport in Michigan earlier this year and they already plan to be aboard the Regal Princess when Princess Cruises’ The Love Boat Celebration at Sea leaves from Galveston, Texas, next November.

“There are casts that are very cohesive and get along, correspond and stuff, but I don't think there is a group that's as tight knit professionally and personally as our group,” Grandy told People during the Love Boa t Celebration at Sea sailing that ran from Aug. 31-Sept. 7. “And I'm not sure what the reason for that is, but I'm obviously not going to question it because it's been very successful and lucrative for us.”

Grandy’s time on The Love Boat also helped him find success when he pivoted to politics. “When I announced to Aaron Spelling that I wanted to leave the show and go back to Iowa to run for Congress, his first response was to sue me for anticipatory breach of contract,” Grandy said of the show’s executive producer. “I don't think that's a term that exists in legal jargon, but he had enough power in Beverly Hills to make it up.”

ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

Spelling, who died in 2006 at 83, didn’t end up suing Grandy, and the actor went on to serve four terms as a Republican congressman for his home state of Iowa.

“The fact that he did not is, I think, because the people back in Iowa who were such huge fans of the show were prepared to take him to court,” Grandy said. “After we settled all of our differences, I went right back into his office and asked him for a political contribution, which he did not give me, but [ Love Boat producer] Douglas Cramer did.”

Fans aboard the Enchanted Princess heard from Grandy, Kopell, Lange and Whelan during two panels moderated by author Jim Colucci and had the opportunity to attend a cocktail demonstration hosted by The Love Boat’ s bartender Lange, test their knowledge at The Love Boat trivia, sip on specialty Love Boat  cocktails and watch episodes of the show at the ship’s outdoor theater. Whelan, Princess Cruises’ Celebrations Ambassador, partook in the Enchanted Princess’s sail away celebration on Aug. 31, the captain's champagne waterfall toast, the vow renewal ceremony onboard and the farewell show on Friday, Sept. 7.

Passengers who opted for the Love Boat VIP package also got to spend time with the star at a welcome reception in the ship’s adults-only retreat, The Sanctuary, and a cast dinner in the Enchanted Princess’s Amalfi dining room.

Aside from Love Boat festivities, guests enjoyed entertainment such as magic and comedy from Quinn "The Mighty Quinn" Beasley and Eric Buss, DJ sets by  DJ Robert Micheal , live music from Arny Galoyo, Jowita, The Pipers Chair and Pinnacle, and a staging of the musical  Rock Opera . Passengers had the chance to dine at specialty restaurants like  The Catch by Rudi , Crown Grill  and 360 , which provides an immersive seven-course meal during which  Brooke Shields  takes diners on a trip through Europe that engages all the senses.

Oceania cruises to debut 1,250-guest riviera in alaska in 2025.

Oceania Cruises to Showcase New Culinary Tours and Imaginative Itineraries

MIAMI , Sept. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ --  Oceania Cruises ® , the world's leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, is offering more than a dozen immersive explorations of Alaska in 2025, taking travelers beyond typical tourist sights to discover the unique perspectives, local culture, soaring glaciers, and pristine wilderness of "The Last Frontier." An Oceania Cruises first, the 1,250-guest Riviera™  will sail her first season in Alaska making her the first and only cruise ship in the region designed for foodies, by foodies, where travelers will enjoy the best of the 49th state, paired with the Riviera's luxurious small-ship ambiance and myriad of gourmet culinary experiences.

The 2025 Alaska season takes place from May through September, offering a variety of itineraries ranging from seven to 12 days that depart from Seattle , Vancouver , and Whittier . Each itinerary features both lesser-known and iconic ports such as Homer , Sitka , and Juneau , giving travelers plentiful opportunities to engage with the destination on an entirely new level through Native tribe site visits, national park excursions, wildlife encounters, and more. Each sailing also features a naturalist on board to offer expert insights into the incredible biodiversity of Alaska , covering everything from whales to bears and seals.

"We're thrilled to bring our 1,250-guest Riviera to Alaska for the very first time," said Frank A. Del Rio , President of Oceania Cruises. "Our elegant, ultra-premium small-ship experience offers the perfect juxtaposition to Alaska's outdoor adventures, and with Riviera being 30 to 50 percent smaller than other premium cruise lines sailing in the region, we're able to bring our guests to lesser-known, more remote ports, for a true immersion into this fascinating destination."

The timeless allure of Alaska means it is a perfect destination for multi-generational gatherings; teens, parents, and grandparents alike will marvel at the majesty of the landscape and the amazing wildlife. Oceania Cruises' popular Alaska Explorer Youth Program is available on all voyages in the region in 2025. Designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years old, the program will include engaging games, activities, and Alaska -inspired special events, where young adventurers will be supervised by experienced and enthusiastic youth counselors.

To further enhance Oceania Cruises' robust cruise itineraries, guests have the option to include a pre- or post-cruise land program where they'll have the opportunity to explore even more of Alaska . Among the land programs offered is Discover Denali, where travelers will enjoy one show-stopping vista after another, including North America's highest peak, while exploring Denali National Park , the first national park created specifically to protect wildlife.

Covering a mind-blowing six million acres, Denali offers true insight into the 49th state. With over two full days in the park, Oceania Cruises' guests will revel in a fully escorted experience including travel by domed railcar and along scenic byways through the iconic wilds of Alaska. Wildlife-spotting opportunities abound – including bald eagles, caribou, and Dall sheep – alongside marveling at glacial-fed rivers and the chance to see the original ranger's cabin, once the only outpost in the vast park. The four day / three night program also features an Alaskan Native presentation on the history of the land and a natural history tour.

Shipboard Highlights of Riviera – The Only True Foodie Ship in Alaska

The beautifully reinspired 1,250-guest Riviera offers an unparalleled experience to curious world travelers. Guests will enjoy incredibly spacious standard staterooms measuring an astounding 291 square feet, with all categories of staterooms having been stunningly reimagined with luxurious furnishings, thoughtful design touches, and larger showers. Savor Alaska – Oceania Cruises Culinary Shore Excursion Highlights

As the only true foodie ship sailing in Alaska , Oceania Cruises' Riviera offers an abundance of food-focused excursions where travelers can be immersed in the culinary scene of the 49th state.

Alaskan Coastal Brunch Escape & Cruise, Juneau : Cruise through the pristine waters of Juneau and onto a remote speck of an island in Stephens Passage for a classic Alaskan-style brunch. While cruising to the remote Colt Island , visitors will look for humpback whales and other marine life. After settling in, enjoy a hearty brunch at the seaside Orca Point Lodge featuring entrées prepared with locally sourced ingredients all while admiring the serenity of the setting and the panoramic views of the wilderness.

Exclusive Crabbing Experience, Ketchikan : Set out on a private charter to prime fishing grounds where you'll help the crew set crab pots and reel in Dungeness crabs, a true Alaskan delicacy. As the pots settle, enjoy fishing, breathtaking scenery, and insights into sustainable fishing practices. Once the catch is in, head to shore for a campfire feast featuring your fresh crabs in a saffron-infused bouillabaisse, followed by a rhubarb-blueberry crisp and hot coffee.

Exclusive Flightseeing & The Taste of Alaska, Ketchikan : Fly over the stunning Tongass National Forest in a DeHavilland Beaver floatplane, landing at Salmon Falls Resort for a feast of iconic Alaskan dishes. Soar over America's largest national forest, with views of sea cliffs, fjords, and misty peaks. You may even spot black bears and humpback whales. After landing in Clover Pass Inlet, tour the fishing resort before enjoying a classic Alaskan lunch featuring crab cakes, soy-glazed salmon, and baked halibut.

Sitka Culinary Adventure, Sitka : Explore the gastronomy of Sitka , a city once known as the " Paris of the Pacific." As Alaska's second-largest seafood exporter, Sitka is a culinary hub with rich cultural influences. You'll sample locally brewed beers made with glacial water, taste versatile sea salts from Alaska Pure Sea Salt Company, and enjoy Russian dumplings at Sitka Pelmeni, honoring the city's Russian heritage. Additional tastings may include cod tips, reindeer hot dogs, ceviche, and chowder, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients.

Succulent Seafood Sampling, Juneau : Sample a variety of seafood at iconic downtown spots while learning about Alaska's sustainable fishing practices. Start at a memorial honoring commercial fishermen before tasting smoked king salmon at Taku Smokeries. At Tracy's King Crab Shack, enjoy king crab bisque and a crab cake, followed by smoked salmon dip, caviar, and kelp salsa at Taste Alaska! At Deckhand Dave's, savor rockfish tacos, then finish with halibut ceviche and a blueberry mojito at the Crystal Saloon.

Hook & Cook at Salmon Falls, Ketchikan : Known as the Salmon Capital of the World, Ketchikan offers the chance to reel in chum, sockeye, king, silver, pink salmon, and possibly halibut, cod, or rockfish. Fish the waters off Ketchikan in a state-of-the-art boat, then enjoy your fresh catch, perfectly cooked at Salmon Falls Resort. Your catch will be prepared at Timbers Restaurant in the resort and paired with delicious side dishes.

Tongass Hike & Taste of Alaska, Ketchikan : Hike a challenging but rewarding two-mile coastal gravel trail through the Tongass National Forest, led by a guide who will point out local flora and fauna. The steep, rocky Coast Guard Beach trail offers stunning beach views as your reward. Afterward, enjoy a three-course seafood lunch at Salmon Falls Resort, featuring locally sourced salmon, halibut, and crab cakes, paired with a local craft beer or wine.
