Description

This llama-supported backcountry trip takes us to the shores of Thunder Lake in the amazing Wild Basin region of Rocky Mountain National Park . Llamas transport our supplies to our campsite where we will settle in for the trip, allowing us to hike with day packs while enjoying a thoroughly authentic backcountry experience. On the final day, the llamas will pack out all the heavy camping gear for us, completing the trip. Our camp is in a Spruce-Fir forest looking down on the clear mountain waters of Thunder Lake, which sits at the bottom of a cirque framed by giant peaks like Tanima Peak (12,420 ft), Chief’s Head (13,579 ft) and Mount Alice (13,310 ft). On day hikes from camp we’ll ascend into the high country above Thunder Lake, which features stunning waterfalls as well as iconic hiking on classic Rocky Mountain ridges and peaks. On the third day we’ll head off trail, making our way up North St. Vrain Creek, past an amazing waterfall, to Eagle Lake and the Moomaw Glacier. The mix of waterfalls, alpine creeks and lakes, and towering mountains make this one of our most popular Colorado trips!

This trip is operated by Wildland Llamas , an authorized backpacking and llama outfitter in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Learn About Our Private Trips

  • Shuttle to Trailhead: 30 minutes
  • Hiking Distance: 6.8 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 2250 feet

We begin this Colorado hiking trip with a beautiful drive from Estes Park to our Wild Basin trailhead where we will pack up and complete a llama orientation. Then we’ll hit the trail! After less than an hour of hiking we come to Copeland Falls, a mesmerizing cascade along North St. Vrain Creek. The rest of today’s hike continues up North St. Vrain Creek, eventually bringing us to the shores of Thunder Lake. Our camp is a short distance from the lake, with breathtaking views into the mountain cirque above the lake and the high country’s snow-capped peaks. After a wonderful first night’s dinner and a Rocky Mountain sunset, we’ll settle in for a peaceful night’s rest.

  • Hiking Distance: 6+ miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1500 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 1500 feet

Today we’ll enjoy a leisurely morning and feast of a breakfast before setting off on our day hike. Leaving our llama friends in camp, we’ll head out for a day of hiking and exploring in the higher mountains. We’ll start by heading west from camp through wildflower-laden meadows and pristine subalpine forests toward the spine of the Rocky Mountains, the Continental Divide. A few hundred feet below the Divide, with permanent snow surrounding its shores, Lake of Many Winds offers us a perfect destination, with breathtaking views of Longs Peak, the entire Wild Basin drainage, and of the plains of the Front Range extending east from the foothills. For those interested in a more rugged challenge, we can traverse around the lake and up to the Divide for one of the most dramatic panoramas you’ve ever seen (this extension is optional). We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch near the alpine lake, and eventually return to camp for a relaxing evening and another delicious backcountry dinner.

  • Hiking Distance: 5+ miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1250 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 1250 feet

Today after breakfast we again leave our llama friends in camp and hike off trail up a pristine mountain creek. We’ll take a break at Martensia Falls, a very tall, sheer waterfall that plunges through a narrow chasm in the towering cliffs above us. Today’s destinations are Box Lake and Eagle Lake, two remote, beautiful alpine lakes below the Continental Divide. Surrounded by boulder fields, scree and meadows, this place is one you won’t want to leave! We’ll sit down for a picnic lunch near one of the lakes and take plenty of time to soak up the magic of where we are. Eventually we’ll head back to camp for a celebratory final dinner and our last night in the backcountry.

  • Elevation Loss: 2250 feet
  • Shuttle to Estes Park: 30 minutes

No rush today! We’ll take our time breaking down camp, then load up the llamas, shoulder our light packs, and begin our descent back to the trailhead. We’ll enjoy an alternative route back that takes us along Ouzel Creek to two different waterfalls we didn’t see on our way in. At our trailhead we’ll pack up the gear, say goodbye to the llamas and shuttle you back to Estes Park for much deserved showers and relaxation. What a week it’s been!

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Normal  terms and conditions  apply to trips with itinerary changes.

Trip Logistics

Where do we meet.

You will meet your guide and group in Estes Park, Colorado at the Estes Park Mountain Shop (2050 Big Thompson Ave) at 5:00 PM the evening before your trip begins for an orientation meeting. Your guide will be in contact approximately 2 weeks before your trip to answer any questions you have, provide you with more details about your exact trip, and coordinate the rendezvous.

We recommend guests arrive in Estes Park (or another nearby location that is 7500′ or higher) 1-2 days before your trip starts. This will help you acclimatize to the higher elevation, and make for a more enjoyable experience during your tour. This is especially important if you have never been to higher altitude, or are flying in from sea level.

Click here to see a printable, downloadable trip information packet with more detailed guidance about flights, shuttles, recommended lodging and more.

This was a first class back country trip

Connor and Chris were amazing. We were not sure how we would fair with the physical requirements of our trip, and both Connor and Chris were very encouraging and supportive. The meals were terrific and it was nice to not have to clean up dishes after meals…this was a first class back country trip. Our guides were educational and passionate about sharing their knowledge with us. I would recommend both Connor and Chris for any trips they host solo or together. Wildland trekking has lifetime customers in our family 👍👍👍

Excellent well organnized trip. Top notch guides and great food. Beautiful and unforgetable trip with great info provided prior to help you prepare. I highly reccommend and if you get Sarah and Jane as your guides you will be well taken care of. The llamas were the cherry on top.

Fantastic Time

This trip was a great way to spend time with old friends. The stunning scenery and adorable llamas made it all the more memorable. The guides were super professional and we felt well taken care of throughout our trip. Thanks Erin and Connor!

Why YOU Should Hike the Colorado Trail Early Season

First, a prelude.

high colorado trek light 3

Climbing the Tenmile in snow (segment 7)

I hiked the Colorado Trail from June 18-July 18, 2023, as an 18 year old, first time thru-hiker, solo. As with any new thru-hiker, there were many people eager to offer their advice, concerns, and discouragement. “ You’ll run out of food! ”, “ what about bears? ”, and “ you’re going ALONE? ” were common concerns from those unfamiliar with thru-hiking as a whole. These basic discouragements did little to stop me from taking on the trail, but as I turned to the more experienced hiking community for advice, I faced a new wall of pessimism in my hike planning:

“You need to be prepared to posthole through endless miles of mashed potato snow… Tenmile, Kokomo Pass, and all of the Collegiates will be high risk areas .”

“Having a hard end date is dangerous on any hike. Worried about your safety.”

“This year will be rough. Ice axe, crampons… might want to include snowshoes. Georgia Pass will be post hole hell.”

“Deadly slab avalanche danger”

“Only 50% of hikers complete long trails and your odds go up if you don’t heed warnings or set dates that can’t realistically be met.”

high colorado trek light 3

Graphs from the 2023 Colorado Snow Survey (my start date is highlighted). The light green line is average Colorado snowpack, 2023 was exceptionally high.

I’m not implying that these comments were made with ill-intent, but I think they reflect the overall culture of fear-mongering that thru-hiking culture often harbors. I needed direction, but the feedback I too-often got was that it was just better that I not do the trail than take a risk on the unknown. In my specific case, I believe the best option was to go early season, to take that step, to take on a challenge just a little bit bigger than I thought I was capable of, ‘cause that’s what adventure is, right? This post is my argument against those overly-cautious voices. If you are considering the Colorado Trail early season, here’s why YOU should do it.

Cross-slope snow hazards

Steep cross-slopes on Segment 7. An unprotected fall here would have sent me thousands of feet down the mountains, over several cliff bands.

An obligatory disclaimer…

I am in no way advocating that all thru-hikers, and especially hikers new to the sport, should attempt the CT with extreme snow. There is adventure and risk, and then there is stupidity. Snow adds another layer of risk to thru-hiking, and spring in Colorado can present unexpected conditions such as snowstorms and avalanche hazards. In winter conditions, the CT turns into full on mountaineering, with equipment required for safe travel. Remember, if your misjudgement of risk leads you to injury/needing to be rescued, your negligence also jeopardizes the lives of the SAR personnel sent to save you. Know your limits and research the conditions before you head out. Get outdoors, and have fun!

The Pros to Early Season Travel

The snow adds an additional layer of epic challenge to your hike.

This could be you! (entering the Weminuche Wilderness, San Juans)

Yes yes, I know what I said in the disclaimer, but as long as you’re safe about it, snow can be really really fun . Hiker trash snowball fights, glissading down passes, and the general epic aura about you from hiking snow-covered peaks are all benefits to the early season. The trail doesn’t get dull when every step you take above treeline requires managing the variables of grip, slip, and balance, all while taking in the dramatic landscape around you. Cornices, avalanche fall lines, snowbridges, sun cups, and ice formations are all unique features to observe and challenges to conquer. Alpine lakes are bright, fresh blue and the wildflowers are in peak showing. The entire landscape is at its peak for the year, and you get to be there to witness it.

Plentiful water

high colorado trek light 3

This section is usually high and dry, but there is water everywhere right now!

During the melt, the mountains are full of water and runoff. Even sections of the CT that are generally 20-30 mile water carries had plenty of water and I rarely had to carry over 1-2 L. Because there’s so much water, you’ll likely witness the mountains in peak wildflower season, and the trail will be less dusty, so you’ll stay cleaner. And, if there’s only snow around, you can always melt some for water! Additionally, this means that wildfire risks are at their all time low, so the risk of having to get off trail because of flames or smoke are low too!

More solitude

high colorado trek light 3

The dreaded day hikers, mountain bikers, and lay people we hikers avoid like the plague are largely absent from the mountain environment in the early season. This means fewer frantic rushing off trail at the sound of biking bells, fewer dayhikers giving you concerned looks, and less competition for already limited campsites on trail.

You (likely) won’t have to deal with the monsoon

high colorado trek light 3

San Luis Peak, a 14er, summit at 4 PM

Imagine, for a second, summiting passes and 14ers at 5 in the afternoon with bluebird skies… no fear for the all-but-guaranteed pop-up thunderstorms that form above treeline every afternoon from mid/late July through late August. Imagine not running from the certain death of lightning behind you on the 70 miles of continuous above treeline trail in the San Juans, and doing it the next day, then the next. This wonderland scenario is possible if you start earlier than July 1, and was what I experienced on my thru.

The Cons to Early Season Travel

Snowed in routes can limit your flexibility & options.

high colorado trek light 3

Long postholing sections below and after Georgia Pass, segment 6. Sinking up to your hips in snow for miles is not fun any way you slice it, and is an invitation for injury.

Although I had aspirations to do the Collegiate West route, it was simply unfeasible in late June 2023. Lake Ann Pass was a 40-foot ice wall paired with a dangerous, avalanche-prone cornice. 14er side quests or high routes like the Lost Creek High Route might be too snowy to do safely. You might even have to skip around snowed-in sections (like the Tenmile Range).

More solitude means less trail support

high colorado trek light 3

A snowed in Georgia Pass. There was no one here with me to embrace the suck with, which made it 1000% worse, tbh.

Fewer people in the mountains means that there will be little or no trail magic. Especially on a trail where it can be hard to form tramilies, starting before the hiker bubble can mean loneliness and a loss of trail community feel. Campsites or businesses along the trail may be closed. It will likely be significantly harder to get hitches into town. This lack of community and support will mean a lot to some hikers, and not much to others, but it’s something to be aware of.

Conclusion

high colorado trek light 3

The snowy trail between Searle and Kokomo Passes, segment 8.

While early-season travel might not be for everyone, in my opinion, the challenges are worth the rewards. To stand on top of the snow-covered San Juans is an experience I will not soon forget. I believe that my early season thru hike was augmented by my snow experiences, and I hope others will consider this as an option as they plan their future adventures. Whatever you decide though, get out there, and enjoy our public lands!

Heyo! My name is JT, and I thru-hiked the Colorado Trail in June and July 2023! I'm a current college student with a heart for nature, environmental issues, and good town food :) In the summers, I am now a mountain guide out of Twin Lakes, CO. I hope this record of my journey brings you joy and inspiration as you plan your own adventures. Have fun out there!

I really liked your article. I think you did a great job laying out the pros and cons to early CT thru hiking. Yes, there’s a tendency to come on too strong with flat-out “don’t do it” responses.

I have one more suggestion, and a question.

Suggestion: since there are so few people early in the season, a Garmin InReach, Zoleo or similar device is strongly recommended.

Question: How do you think mosquitoes were compared to later in the summer? (Decisions, decisions: more mosquitoes or more lightning?)

Since you’re a guide from Twin Lakes I assume you’ve now experienced the joy of the Collegiate West. I did the East route on my 2021 thru but so many people told me what I’d missed out that I did the Collegiate Loop in 2022. The West truly is spectacular!

Again, really enjoyed your article! Thanks for the great advice and images.

Snowshoes, crampons, ice ax?

How much mud?

Details please! 🙂

Always take what others say with a grain of salt – nothing wrong with going it alone if you do your homework and know your limits. Use common sense and only take calculated risks. Avoid unnecessary risk, and have fun! The foregoing advice has served me well for 50 years of backpacking.

Just an FYI, the third gen 3rd brake light is the same part number as the second gen, therefore, any aftermarket LED or smoked 2nd gen third brake light witill also fit our 3rd gen. I've ordered a smoked LED one and will install it soon. I know I know, #thisthreadisuselesswithoutpics

100%... definitely learned that over the years with the various vehicles Ive had....couldn't agree more! 👍

Is there a good list of shared parts between the 2nd & 3rd Gen? This would help with determining the compatibility of aftermarket as well. Probably 2 lists are needed: The somewhat easier one where the part numbers are identical on 2nd & 3rd Gen, and a more difficult list, where part numbers are different, but because the mounting is the same, a 2nd Gen will fit a 3rd Gen and a 3rd Gen will fit a 2nd Gen.

Sweet I have a brand new smoked one laying around that I never put on my second gen colorado, gonna install it on my AT4 and post some pics, hopefully it doesn't look dumb.

Looks great! They are cargo lights though so they should come on when you click the cargo lights on

Ahh! Got it!

high colorado trek light 3

Looks nice! Where'd you get that one from?

That looks better than mine. 😞 When I ordered it, I didn't realize there were 2 different styles.

Amazons returns are pretty easy. Just throw the OEM one back on for a few days. For what it's worth, on the red truck, I like the one you have.

Looks good man! You gotta let me know how the truck does in the Ontario snow, I'm hoping I can move back north in a few years

And witch light is this KDawgONE ? Thanks!!

high colorado trek light 3

Iceman, send me the link for that light, Def gotta have that.....

high colorado trek light 3

Yoo any way you could post some pics once you get it put on?? I’m throwing around the idea of putting it on my TB as well but I’m wanting to see a photo first 😜
