GWAR: 'Beyond Hell Live' DVD Now Available

GWAR 's manager Sleazy P. Martini has announced the release of the band's "Beyond Hell Live" DVD. He said, "The long-awaited 'Beyond Hell Live' DVD is finally here. Available now only on tour with GWAR at merchandise booths and here at this website , this DVD is the best documentation of a GWAR tour yet. This DVD is compilation of three East Coast shows using four cameras per shoot so when you watch it seems like twelve cameras. Plus this DVD has 35 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage shot of the Slave-Pit as well the entire pre-show set up and post-show breakdown. The show's audio was digitally recorded off the soundboard by Jeremy Smith and then digitally mastered by Corey Smoot at Karma Studios giving the show a sound quality comparable to 'Live From Mt. Fuji' . This is as close as you will probably get to being in GWAR short of having an all-access laminate as you work in the Slave-Pit, load the semi, unload the semi, hang out on the bus, hang out in the dressing room, set the stage, watch rehearsal, watch sound check, hang out with other GWAR fans, watch the whole show, hang with the band and generally behave like an unrepentant bohab for an entire day. If you get one live GWAR DVD then this is the one to get. Only 1000 have been printed up for now and I am only authorized to sell 250 here at this website while the rest go to GWAR on tour so they won't be around too long. These DVD's are region 0 (all regions) so you fans overseas can enjoy this awesome show as well. The total running time is 1 hour 56 min and contains the 'Beyond Hell Live' set with encore in its entirety."

Video footage of the band performing "Sadaam A Go Go" and "Go To Hell" , taken from the "Beyond Hell Live" DVD, can be viewed below.

As previously reported, Metal Blade has set a January 8, 2008 release date for the DVD version of GWAR 's "Phallus in Wonderland" , which was originally issued on VHS in 1992. The DVD special features include instant scene access, options to play songs only and curtain call.

Track Info. Beyond Hell [ ]

All song descriptions and information taken from Genius .

The first track of Beyond Hell , “Intro” is a short piece of narration that sets the scene for the album’s story: The Nazi Pope’s armies ambush GWAR’s fortress while the band is asleep in a drunken stupor.

The dissonant guitar riff in the background, performed by Balsac The Jaws Of Death, would later reappear in both “Lust In Space” and “You Are My Meat”.

War Is All We Know [ ]

The first true song of the album, “War Is All We Know” tells of The Nazi Pope’s army ambushing GWAR’s fortress. Though the band tries to mount a comeback, they find themselves overwhelmed and admit defeat, retreating underground.

Though the lyrics specifically detail part of Beyond Hell ’s plot, “War Is All We Know” has been performed live at concerts in the years afterward, regardless of tour storylines.

Go To Hell [ ]

In the story of Beyond Hell this song describes Gwar's retreat to hell by using tunnels under their fortress.

I Love the Pigs [ ]

Story wise this song describes when Gwar makes their way to Hell but find a very long line at the gates, along with a pig-like demonic police officer beating up people with a club. This demon used to be a corrupt policeman while he was alive, involving himself in drug deals until the last one went wrong and he was shot (despite this, the cause of death is said to be suicide by the authorities). Gwar murder and mutilate the demonic cop and make their way through the gates of Hell.

Eighth Lock [ ]

The intended lead single from Beyond Hell , “Eighth Lock” is a heavy thrash song about Malebolge, the eighth circle of Hell described in Dante’s Inferno . Within the album’s story, GWAR fights their way through Hell and wind up at the Eighth Lock, described as a massive prison for the underworld’s worst demons.

The music video depicts GWAR performing the song in a fiery warehouse, interspersed with grainy shots of taxidermy, eyeless corpses, and other horrific imagery. The Nazi Pope, the album’s initial villain, is seen performing a Satanic ritual on lead singer Oderus Urungus.

Destroyed [ ]

“Destroyed” is a fast-paced thrash song about a decadent rock star who will do anything for drugs and alcohol. Within Beyond Hell ’s story, the song is about GWAR’s encounter with Toe E. Namel, a monstrous demon who embodies the stereotypes of rock stars indulging in hard drug abuse. Namel attempts to stop GWAR’s travels through Hell, but is ultimately defeated.

The lyrics of the song would later become bittersweet when GWAR’s lead singer Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) passed away from a heroin overdose in March 2014. In an Instagram post, Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe said he believed Brockie was not a full-on junkie and only dabbled with drugs.

The Ultimate Bohab [ ]

“The Ultimate Bohab” is about a dedicated fan who commits suicide to follow GWAR to Hell, much to their annoyance.

“Bohab” is the term for a GWAR fan. It was coined in the 80s by Chuck Varga (Sexecutioner) and Dave Musel (Müsel) as a nickname for a socially inept friend of Hunter Jackson (Techno Destructo) named Bob. They called him “Bob The Slob”, which later mutated into “Bohab The Slohab” (a reference to the 1962 Ray Stevens novelty song “Ahab The Arab”) before eventually shortening it to just “Bohab”. The word “Bohab” then took on a generalized meaning of a person who was “persistently friendly” (engaging in “bohabbery”) and talked too much about trivial matters without understanding obvious social cues of disinterest. Don Drakulich (Sleazy P. Martini) later recounted the origins of the term during a 2022 livestream, in which he also told the story of Bob’s death.

On the corresponding Beyond Hell tour, the Ultimate Bohab character was given two different names: Melvin Fleebish and Stubbles McGillicutty. Both names date back to the earliest GWAR concerts as the names of “lucky contest winners” that were brought onstage and slaughtered by GWAR. Regardless of name, the Ultimate Bohab was disemboweled on a rack.

Deluxe VIP tickets to the GWAR-B-Q, the band’s annual lakeside mini-festival, are called “Ultimate Bohab Ticket Packages” in reference to this song.

The One That Will Not Be Named [ ]

The climax of Beyond Hell ’s story, “The One That Will Not Be Named” tells of GWAR finally arriving at Satan’s fortress, only to discover Satan is actually a Jewish minotaur-like monster named Jewcifer. In the song, Jewcifer is voiced by longtime artist and GWAR Slave Matt Maguire.

On the Beyond Hell tour, Jewcifer speaks with multiple “split personality” voices, the main one being a stereotypical nasally Jew. He attempts to ward GWAR off by offering them chart-topping success in exchange for sexual favors. Oderus Urungus is prepared to accept until Balsac The Jaws Of Death convinces him otherwise. Though his hands get chopped off, Jewcifer proves to be too strong for GWAR alone, and they summon their pet Tyrannosaurus Rex Gor-Gor to bite Jewcifer’s head off to finally kill him.

Back In Crack [ ]

Following the defeat of Jewcifer, the band find themselves back at their destroyed fortress receiving a 9-ton crack boulder from Sleazy P. Martini, and pondering over how meaningless their quest was, as they were left with absolutely nothing but a ruined castle and the knowledge that their adventure at least “was good for some kicks”.

School's Out [ ]

“School’s Out” is a cover of the iconic Alice Cooper song of the same name with some altered lyrics.

“School’s Out” was recorded at the request of GWAR’s record label at the time, the now-defunct DRT Entertainment. The executives at DRT wanted a more “accessible” lead single to boost Beyond Hell ’s sales. GWAR initially wanted “Eighth Lock” as the lead single, but begrudgingly agreed to DRT’s wishes.

The music video features GWAR performing the song in a classroom and causing chaos in the school. The teacher/“school marm” in the video is played by longtime GWAR artist and Slave Scott Krahl in drag, and the janitor is played by bassist Todd Evans (Beefcake The Mighty).

When asked about “School’s Out” in an August 2006 interview with Ultimate-Guitar, lead guitarist Cory Smoot (Flattus Maximus) said:

"The “School’s Out” idea was actually a management idea. We sat down and had a meeting, and our label rep just told us, “You guys are growing pretty fast. The kids are loving you guys. You guys seems to be the cool thing right now.” And he was like, “GWAR has always been definitely a live band.” We do decent in album sales, but the way we pack shows – we’ve seen gold-selling bands not even pack as well as GWAR will at a show. He brought it up and, of course, our integrity sat strong there. We were just contemplating it forever, just trying to decide what would be a good cover song. What would we do? And our manager’s idea was “School’s Out.” And who better to cover a song than (from) the godfather of theatrical rock himself? Not to mention a total, I’m sure, marketing scheme as far as school was letting out and all that stuff. We just shot a really cool video for it. Hopefully MTV plays it. We’re trying to make sure nothing’s too out of hand. We went out to Brooklyn to some old school and got a bunch of hot girls, ex-strippers, and of course, our goofy-looking asses. We went to this school and did this crazy, cheesy, hilarious, but awesome video for “School’s Out,” which hopefully should be out soon."

Kevin Feige on Hugh Jackman’s Yellow Wolverine Suit and the MCU Going R-Rated With Cocaine and Sex Jokes in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 11: Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios speaks onstage at Walt Disney Studios' 2024 presentation highlighting its upcoming release schedule at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace during CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, on April 11, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kevin Feige had but one request.

The Marvel Studios president was talking to writer-director Shawn Levy about plans for the studio’s upcoming blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Related Stories

Why is bytedance considering a move that burned so many tech giants, box office: scarlett johansson and channing tatum rom-com 'fly me to the moon' eyes $12 million liftoff, popular on variety.

Feige, whose long history with Marvel began as an associate producer on the first “X-Men” movie, remembers a time when studio executives wouldn’t allow A-listers to go near something as “bright and silly” as fluorescent Spandex — instead opting for black leather.

“Hugh Jackman having never appeared in the character’s most iconic suit is like being Superman in 10 movies and never wearing the Superman costume,” he says. “It’s a testament to Wolverine that it didn’t necessarily matter; the character is more than the costume.”

Now that he’s the boss, though, he gets to right that wrong. “When I realized Hugh was in, I went from studio mode to ‘you know you gotta get in the yellow outfit, right?'”

“Deadpool & Wolverine,” which opens in theaters on July 26, is notable for reasons beyond Jackman’s inaugural appearance in Wolverine’s uniform. It’s the first time that mutants (those Marvel characters were previously licensed to 20th Century Fox) will appear in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s the only installment in the franchise to land an R-rating.

Feige spoke to Variety for a cover story about “Deadpool & Wolverine” and chatted about the early struggles to get the film off the ground, as well as the truth about that cocaine joke in the trailer.

It’s been five years since Disney acquired Fox , and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first standalone movie that dips into the new library of Marvel IP. What excited you most about integrating mutants into the MCU?

It felt almost like destiny. I’ve been at Marvel for over 20 years now. All those Fox characters were ones I’d never dreamed of having back purely under the fold of Marvel Studios. So when that happened, it was a giant surprise and a huge opportunity. The Fantastic Four and X-Men alone make a colossal portion of our comic universe that we now have access to for films and shows.

Ryan Reynolds told me that before Hugh Jackman joined the movie, the writers had one final pitch for you. And if you hadn’t said “yes,” they were ready to back away. Did you feel like the project was at that stage?

Oh, absolutely. We didn’t want to do a third one just to do it. We certainly didn’t want to take what Ryan had done so well in the first two “Deadpool” films and screw it up. There weren’t reasons for being. It seemed like it was time for either the rubber to hit the road or, as Ryan says, take the foot off the gas and retool. As I’m sure they told you, that was the exact same day that Hugh called Ryan and said, “I really want to come back.”

What conversations did you have with Shawn and Ryan about bringing mutants into the MCU?

Almost everything was on the table. From Ryan’s point of view, this movie was all about No. 1, Deadpool and Wolverine together for the first time, and No. 2, the exploration of Deadpool and his cast of characters when they have access to this entire other timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadpool makes a joke in the trailer about you saying cocaine is the one thing that’s off-limits. Did you really say that?

I didn’t say they couldn’t . But we were talking about everybody always being afraid of Disney-fying things. This is the biggest entertainment company in the world for 100 years. You should be so lucky to Disney-fy everything! But what people mean by that is shaving down the rough edges. We were open to everything. I had said there were some things that we could evolve . After about the 28th time you do a joke, sometimes it’s not as funny. Maybe I’m slightly prudish when it comes to drug use. But I was like “Eh, it’s not that funny” in passing. Ryan, of course, stores everything in his brain for later use as excellent jokes. And he added it to the script.

Ryan is known for obscure jokes and deep-cut references. Was there anything you had to Google after working with him?

I actually wasn’t referring to anything in specific! Hugh and Shawn told me they didn’t understand some of Ryan’s jokes in the script.

There’s a line in the red band trailer — you don’t have to write this in the article for crying out loud! — about pegging. I know what pegging is; it’s in the first “Deadpool” movie. But there were people that I worked with and for who didn’t know what it was. I had to explain it to them.

This might be the first R-rated movie for many Marvel fans. How young is too young to see this movie?

That comes down to parental guidance. It may seem strange to say, but it is an immensely wholesome movie — with a lot of bad words and gore.

The filmmaking team chose to shoot in practical locations, which exposed the production to paparazzi. Is the tradeoff worth it since they don’t get the same privacy as they would on a soundstage?

That was very important to us. We didn’t want this to be a green screen box for all of the locations. We want it to be out in the real world, and that always comes with potential tradeoffs. We were in a lot of secure locations and places that were far away from prying eyes — with the exception of drones. It was a new experience for me to have paparazzi drones flying over flying over set. Sometimes things look cool in a behind-the-scenes photo, but most often, they don’t look great. I think people are savvy enough over the years to know that’s not what it will look like in the movie. That being said, Wolverine in that yellow outfit looks cool from any angle, drone or shot through the trees.

What is it that works so well about the pairing of Ryan and Hugh?

It’s their friendship in real life. Sequels and big-budget franchise films have a lot of pressure and money and expectations. They work best when most of that subsides to the background and it’s just a bunch of friends making something cool.

How central will mutants be to the MCU moving forward?

I wouldn’t say when but we’ve already hinted over the past few years at certain people possessing what will one day be known as the mutant gene. We’ll be very excited when we tap into it.
