Dont like it… No Top Sites, reverting back

I suggest waiting on further bug fixes before installing 14.0. I had crashes, screen freezes, spinning beach ball, etc. Reboots seem to help, but really, is this the way we manage applications in the 21st century?

just upgraded from high sierra to mojave today and got safari 14 after it’s completed.

didn’t notice any problem. everything seems working ok. but still, it would be great if safari 14 allows uBlock origin extension.

ka-block is good but it’s not as good as uBo

After loading Safari 14.0 I can’t load CNN. Its page keeps reloading automatically. I can load Apple News and pull up CNN from within it. Also, can’t load profiles in Match… same issue. However, Our Time loads profiles normally. Definite bug.

I have the same issue with pages reloading automatically after installing Safari 14.0. I can no longer open discover.com, and to make matters worse, it happens with websites where I’m trying to research how to fix the problem! I will attempt to contact Apple since it seems to be a bug.

Hi, Apparently Apple deemed the Top Sites not relevant anymore. They are gone, gone, gone.

Haven’t figured out how to access them.

wow! I just downloaded safari 14 and 7 trackers are blocked using this site. google(2) amazon, facebook buysellads twitter and exposometingtial all site i avoid and will never use. i don’t think this post will last long here, and this new feature is making me realize the internet might not be worth using. great for safari-apple bad for who ever needs info.

The “trackers” are cookies from third party advertisers, basically all sites that are advertiser supported require them. Those type of cookies are mostly used for analytics and ad targeting, for example if you were looking on Amazon at shoes you might see an ad for shoes somewhere else, and that is targeted and tracked by those cookies.

The tracking/cookie data can be interesting information but it’s also confusing for many average users, since it implies something more nefarious than it is, which is basically just ad targeting (ex; making ads relevant to the user) or data analytics (ex; how many visitors went to a particular web page).

That’s not “trackers,” that’s trackers; there is no reason for quotes. And while it may not be nefarious (wicked/criminal), it’s definitely unwanted and absolutely something “average users” should be aware of. What someone does outside of a particular site is none of that site’s business.

I understand your point, and I’m personally a big advocate for privacy. More knowledge is better.

From the standpoint of a site that is advertiser supported (like this one), ads are what allows sites like this to be free. The site itself has no access to any of the detailed tracking info, but we can see anonymized general data about what pages are popular, what countries people visit from, if they’re using an iPhone, Mac, or a Windows PC, etc.

what ever these unwanted things are, we can see them “trying” to gather info on our web browsing easier now.

from sept 17th on i am not going to respect a website that has 7 companies i will never use and despise infiltrate my web browsing experience. that was the point of my message.

I knew these parasites tried to tracked me, but i would find out after weekly while checking or when i deleted cookies and never gave that much thought, now we know that instant.

If you’re concerned about it, an easy resolution is to modify your Safari/browser settings to not accept off-site cookies, and to disable cross-site tracking. If you’re still concerned about it, installing a cookie blocker extension goes further.

Disabling cookies entirely is also possible, but it can have unintended effects though with many websites that require logins, like banking, finance, online shopping, email, etc, since the cookie is how the login information is saved for that site. So you have to login to everything constantly if you do that, sort of like browsing in Private Mode.

Or you can just browse the web in Private mode or Incognito, where no cookies are stored anyway. Same issue as disabling cookies too though.

One of the biggest trackers is social media, like Facebook, so if you want privacy don’t use any social networks.

the point is sept 16 we could not see sho was “tracking” us sept 17 we can see who is TRYING to track us the site we goto are letting these site like FB, TW AMZN GGL try to track us

why would i visit this sites? that is the realization i encountered.

Sites can’t control that stuff unfortunately, except by not having ads and not using those analytics services.

For users who are particularly bothered by this (which they’ll encounter all over the web), they can use tracking blockers like Ghostery, or adjust their Safari settings.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ghostery-lite/id1436953057?mt=12

The downside to things like Ghostery is that sometimes it breaks websites, and it also deprives the site of revenue, which for free ad-supported sites is a major problem.

ok. Where has my top sites start page gone?

Which is the version and build number of Safari 14 for Mojave?

Installed Safari 14 on 2016 MBPro, Mojave. When it doesn’t crash, which has now been the usual case on launch, it also switches GFX from the integrated Intel GFX to the Radion discreet GFX, something it only would do for certain video content. Of course this sucks battery and generates significant heat. Need to revert back or hope they read my “Send Report to Apple” logs.

Another bit of weirdness- When Safari 14 decides not to crash (like right now), I now suddenly get a “application Safari suddenly quit” notifications, with the usual Ignore/Send to Apple/Relaunch. Except that, Safari, staring me in the face, had not quit. It’s still engaging the Radeon GFX. I keep clicking “Send report to Apple” hoping I’ll annoy them into a solution :(

Apple releases Safari 14 for macOS ahead of Big Sur launch

apple safari 14 download

Apple launched iOS 14, iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, and watchOS 7 today. However, macOS 11 Big Sur didn’t get the same treatment. But Safari users can experience some of the benefits without the full update.

Today, Apple also released Safari 14 to the public without upgrading macOS in general. The update is available for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users, and it will bring with it a variety of new features to the table. That includes a customizable start page that will allow users to change the sections they see when it loads, and change the background.

The new software also features a new tab design, so it will show more tabs. It will also display favicons by default. The new Privacy Report in Safari will show cross-site tracking information, and which ones are being blocked.

Here’s the full changelog:

Safari 14.0 introduces new features, even faster performance, and improved security. • New tab bar design shows more tabs on screen and displays favicons by default • Customizable start page allows you to set a background image and add new sections • Privacy Report shows cross-site trackers that are being blocked by Intelligent Tracking Prevention • Removes support for Adobe Flash for improved security Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices. For detailed information on the security content of this update, please visit: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201222 .

Safari 14 is a free update for the internet browser, and it’s available now. To update, simply open the System Preferences app and follow the update instructions.

macOS 11 Big Sur will release sometime later this fall.

Best browser until bombarded by ads

Truly the iPhone defining web browser. Fast, responsive and easy to use. But, when i come across a website that has more ads than content, Safari stops loading the content to try and keep up with loading all the ads. For example, if i visit a webpage that has a very long article where between each paragraph an ad is placed, the webpage can simply stop loading somewhere towards the middle of the article. The phone will get warm and the webpage will refresh automatically. Using Reader mode doesn't help because Safari can't load the text past the point of "too much to load" Frustrating, perhaps. I tent to avoid websites like this but sometimes they are the only place where i can get the information i am after. The need for patience and hoping the full page will load up after several refresh attempts is a must.

Beautiful, Welcoming And Inviting to the World !

I’m la I have no clue why you would want to be in my I find this to be a very good way of navigating the question of the universe and its relation to our virtual universe and the complexity of the universe itself and its interactions with other worlds as well as our understanding of the universe and the universe and how it relates to the way we interact with the internet universe and our interactions with it is fascinating to watch how it grows and becomes more complex and at the same time so much easier to comprehend and navigate; something that we all play a part in as a whole global phenomenon and we are all in the process of discovering the most unimaginable metamorphosis of a digital revolution that is already happening today and it is the most exciting and most profound moment ever and we are all very happy to see it advance as we are all responsible for the universe to bring about profound changes that have lasting effects of imagination and life that we are all in pursuit of mąkeep the universe a beautiful place and that needs our best possible future prosperity happiness joy and longevity parser of all things to come together in this space and we are always looking forward and we have to make our best path and help us all the way throughout our life

Best Browser!

I absolutely love Safari for countless reasons! One reason is its incredible design. I love the bottom Tab Bar on iPhone because it feels more modern and natural to me. The ability to create a new tab by a single swipe is intuitiveness at its finest. I understand that some users don’t like the Tab Bar being at the bottom, but it can be changed back to the top. I also love the design on iPad and Mac because it’s consistent between the two. Speaking of consistency, the rounded corners make using Safari a joy because it fits in with the rest of Apple’s design trends. There are also countless amazing features that I couldn’t see myself living without. For example, the customisable Start Page significantly increases my productivity and it’s a great warm welcome into the app. I’m also in love with Tab Groups. I utilise the feature heavily and I don’t know what I would do without it. However, Safari’s unparalleled commitment to user privacy and security alone makes it a great alternative to other browsers such as Chrome. Not only can it block trackers, but it can also report back to you what trackers it has prevented, which is incredibly useful. Overall, I strongly believe that Safari should be used by more users as their main browser!

macOS Big Sur Safari

Apple has released the latest version of its Safari browser for macOS Catalina and High Sierra, ahead of the release of Big Sur later this year. Safari 14 improves the browser’s tabs, adds a new privacy report feature, and offers new customization options for your start page. You can download it by heading to System Preferences app and clicking “Software Update.”

One of the key improvements that’s coming with the latest version of Safari is improved tab management . The tabs themselves have been redesigned to be more space-efficient, display website favicons by default, and show a preview of each tab while hovering your mouse over them. There’s a new start page which you can customize with your own backgrounds and links, and a Privacy Report that highlights any cross-site trackers that the browser is blocking. Oh, and this version of the browser also removes support for Adobe Flash.

Tab management, baby

Some new Safari features will require macOS Big Sur to run, and aren’t available if you’re updating Safari on an older version of the operating system, 9to5Mac reports . These include support for 4K HDR video, and the browser’s built-in translation feature.

Yesterday saw the release of a swathe of Apple operating system updates , including iOS 14 for iPhones, iPadOS 14 for iPads, tvOS 14 for the Apple TV, and watchOS 7 for Apple Watches. You’ve still got a little longer to wait to update your Mac, but at least you can grab the new browser now.

I use Safari 14 since beta2 and is fine, but big surprise..... In iPadOS 14 bundled Safari the  Privacy Report which should show the cross-site trackers that are being blocked by Intelligent Tracking Prevention is NOT available. Now starting to understand Apples theory of PRIVACY IS A HUMAN RIGHT. This is valid only in PR statements!

FAQ: What’s new in Safari 14

With the arrival this fall of macos 11 big sur, apple users will get an updated safari browser. coming soon: web extension support, touchid for password authentication and a variety of customizations..

macos big sur safari start page

Apple last week unveiled macOS 11, aka “Big Sur,” at its all-virtual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Like any other year, the Cupertino, Calif. company also gave coders a preview build of the operating system so they could get cracking.

And the new OS means, as usual, a new Safari browser for the desktop. Thank goodness for consistency, eh?

Unlike rivals, who crank out new browsers every few weeks – for instance, Mozilla refreshes Firefox every four – Apple rolls out a new Safari just once a year. Rather than spread out new features and functionality across a dozen or so updates, Apple packs the bulk of new into a single upgrade.

That deserves attention. We want to oblige.

Here, in Q&A format, is what you need to know now about the upcoming Safari. Computerworld will expand on this throughout the summer as Apple continues to pump out betas.

What’s Apple calling the new browser? Safari 14. Yes, exciting. Jump back, Loretta.

Last year’s Safari – the one packaged with Catalina, macOS 10.15 – was v.13 and unless the sky falls in, 2021’s will debut as v.15.

Apple’s practice of upgrading Safari annually led to that low numeric; rivals like Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Edge are at 83, and Firefox is at 77.

How do I get Safari 14? Pay the Man – at least if you want it now.

A mere $99 gets you an Apple Developer’s account – no, you don’t need to really be a developer to register – and thus access to early-release builds, including macOS 11, aka “Big Sur,” which includes Safari 14. Download and install Big Sur, or upgrade an existing macOS to it, and you’re green.

At some point this month, Apple will kick off a public beta program for Big Sur, as it has in the past for previous operating systems. The public beta will be free, but will slightly trail the developer build in stability and reliability throughout the preview process.

To sign up for Apple’s beta program, head here .

When will Apple launch Safari 14? “This fall” is as specific as Apple got when it unveiled macOS 11. September is the most likely month, with October not far behind; of the last seven upgrades, four have been released in September, three in October.

I love tabs. There’s no such thing as too many tabs. What does Safari 14 have for me? Users can preview an open tab by hovering the cursor over that tab, which after a short delay displays a thumbnail image of the page under said tab.

Safari 14 now displays “favicons,” the small icons, often a site logo, which make open tabs more visually recognizable, by default. (Earlier versions required an option be set in Preferences > Tabs > Show website icons in tabs .)

Apple also said that 14 will display more tabs that earlier versions; when numerous tabs are open, a favicon-only look eliminates site-name text but still allows for recognition.

Safari 1

Hover the mouse pointer over a tab for a quick peek at the page. It’s a great way to orient yourself when tabs are thicker than fleas on a stray cat.

I’m tired of passwords. How about some help? Safari 14 on macOS will let users authenticate to a website using Apple’s Touch ID technology. (And if Apple ever adds Face ID to Macs, as it’s done Touch ID to the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, probably that, too.)

Websites have to code for the functionality, which once a user authenticates the usual way – username, password – will ask if he or she wants to opt in to using Touch ID. Sites that require two-factor authentication, banks, say, can be accommodated; a press on the Touch ID key and that’s handled as well.

I’m not paying for a developer account but I’d like to see what Safari has for me now. What are my options? The Safari Technology Preview is what you’re looking for. This is a beta program separate from the macOS beta; it runs constantly, giving site developers a way to test changes throughout a version’s lifecycle.

The latest, Preview 109 , includes “new Safari and WebKit features that will be present in Safari 14.”

The developer preview can be run side-by-side with the stable, release-format Safari in macOS Catalina. No developer account is required to download and use the preview.

Will Safari 14 support Flash? Nope.

This version of Safari will be the first to support Adobe Flash in any way, shape or form. Three years ago, Apple – along with rival browser makers – said it would drop Flash support by the end of 2020. (Adobe pegged that same timetable for halting updates and distribution of Flash Player.)

I heard Safari 14 will translate foreign languages, just like Chrome does. Is that right? Well, not like Chrome.

The browser will translate several languages – English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese – but that’s a far cry from Google’s tally, which is more than 100. (Google Translate has been integrated into Chrome for a decade.)

If translation is possible, you’ll see an icon near the far right end of the address field. Click on that and available translations will show. Languages for translations to (not from) must be listed in the Preferences > Language & Region > General > Preferred Languages .

Apple currently labels this feature as beta.

Safari 2

Click on the icon near the right end of the address bar – just before the refresh symbol – to translate a page.

Will Safari 14 run Chrome add-ons? How about those for Firefox? Sort of. But not out of the box.

While Safari 14 will support a Web Extensions API, a cross-browser system for developing add-ons, Apple’s implementation is somewhat different from the APIs used by Chrome and Firefox (and others, like Edge, which are Chromium-based clones of Chrome); developers will have to run non-Safari extensions through a special converter to get them ready to place on the Mac App Store.

For its part, Mozilla, maker of Firefox, welcomed Safari jumping on the bandwagon. “We’re excited to see expanded support for this common set of browser extension APIs,” wrote Caitlin Neiman, add-ons community manager, in a June 23 post to the Mozilla Hacks site .

Where will you get add-ons for Safari 14? From the Mac App Store.

Earlier versions of the browser showed available add-ons after choosing Safari > Safari Extensions . That same menu selection now pops up the App Store, taking the user to the add-ons section.

Safari 3

Safari add-ons are now distributed through the Mac App Store.

Will support for the API mean a lot more add-ons for Safari? Theoretically, yes. Potentially, also yes.

Practically? Who knows?

Although Microsoft’s Edge can run Chrome extensions without any modification, that’s due to the two browsers’ identical code base. Firefox, for example, hasn’t greatly benefited from the Web Extensions standard. Whether Safari, with a paltry 4% global desktop browser share – and active on about 40% of all Macs – can attract enough interest to change its add-on count in any meaningful way is unknown. Even if it does, that may not translate into a larger slice of the Mac market. (Five years ago, for instance, Safari was the primary browser for 66% of Mac owners.)

What privacy tools has Apple added to Safari 14? Tops on Computerworld ‘s list: a new privacy report that, well, reports data on trackers and the websites using them that the browser has, well, browsed.

The report can be called by selecting Safari > Privacy Report . A pop-up window shows stats from the past 30 days, broken out by ranked websites – top of the list used more trackers than the one at the bottom – and tracker origin, such as doubleclick.net (an ad network) and google-analytics.com (self-explanatory). Safari’s report will also keep count of the number of trackers it’s blocked (assuming, of course, that the Preferences > Privacy > Website tracking box marked “Prevent cross-site tracking” has remained checked).

All of this is an adjunct to Safari’s Intelligent Tracking Protection (ITP), which debuted in 2017 and has been upgraded several times since. If ITP is turned off, the privacy report will be worthless.

The same holds for an individual site’s privacy report, accessed by clicking the shield-style icon to the left of the address bar. The ensuing small pop-up simply displays the number of blocked trackers, a list of the trackers used by that website and finally, entry to the full report (by clicking the info icon).

Firefox users will see much here that seems familiar, as Mozilla’s browser has provided a tracking report since October 2019 and version 70, as part of its Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) feature.

Safari 4

Safari’s new privacy report summarizes stats and calls out the sites that harbored the most trackers.

What about hacked password notification? Other browsers have that. Safari 14 will too, Apple’s said.

“Added notifying users when one of their saved passwords in iCloud Keychain has shown up in a data breach,” the Cupertino, Calif. company noted in the browser’s release notes .

Details weren’t spelled out, but the feature will almost certainly resemble those found in Firefox and Chrome, both of which check stored passwords against a database of the contents of known breaches, then report back when a match is found, urging the user to change said password.

To use the new warning, users will have to enable iCloud Keychain. Instructions on doing that can be found in this Apple support doc .

Frankly, Safari’s new tab page is boring. Anything to brighten that up? Yes.

Several new customizing options in Safari 14 let users add background images to the new tab page (like Chrome does), toggle on or off elements from iCloud Tabs to a truncated privacy report, and shrink or expand the number of recently-visited sites that populate the page.

Safari’s options are very easy to enable or disable – more so than other browser’s new tab pages – since they’re just checkboxes.

Safari 5

Safari 14’s new tab page can be customized by turning on or off several elements using the checkboxes.

Macos mojave, apple releases safari 14.1.2 for macos catalina and mojave with security improvements.

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Apple today quietly released an updated version of Safari for users running versions of macOS prior to macOS Big Sur 11. Safari 14.1.2 is now available for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave with security improvements and bug fixes.

The update follows the release of iOS 14.7 and watchOS 7.6 , which were made available to the public earlier today. The final builds of macOS Big Sur 11.5 and iPadOS 14.7 are yet to be released. However, what exactly these updates bring in terms of security improvements is unknown at this time.

On its security webpage , Apple only mentions that more details about today’s updates will be available soon. Earlier this year, Apple introduced Safari 14.1 for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave , which fixed a serious exploit in WebKit that had been used to execute arbitrary code on a device without authorization.

Presumably another security breach in WebKit has been patched with the latest versions of iOS and macOS, and now Apple is releasing the same patch for Mac users who cannot update to macOS Big Sur. The company suggests that more details will be revealed after an investigation to confirm that the security update works.

For the protection of our customers, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are generally available.

You can update Safari by going to the Software Update menu in the System Preferences app on your Mac.

Where to download just the Safari dmg/pkg

The internet traffic between our managed macOS Mojave laptops and the Apple Software Updates website is blocked for security reasons. So I can not use the regular System Preferences - Software Update to update native macOS software.

This is not an issue for me, because every time Apple release a Software Update, I wait a week or so and I visit the following URL https://support.apple.com/downloads and I download the specific package (in .dmg format), I save the .dmg package into a USB Stick and I update the macOS laptops and I am good to go.

Now, the problem is that Apple just released an important security update https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212808 just for Safari 14.1.2.

My question is since that I believe this time it is just Safari the issue, is Apple going to publish just the Safari .dmg package update on the regular https://support.apple.com/downloads website? If not, how can I download just the Safari 14.1.2 in .dmg/.pkg format so I can install into our macOS Mojave laptops?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Here is the Apple Url where you can get the URL for the recent 14.1.2 Safari update for Mojave,

This opens up a very long list of Apple updates going back to 2015. The most recent updates appear at the bottom of the list,

so you can go straight to the bottom of the list and slowly scroll up till you get to the download you want. Please see the screenshot below,

The highlighted area is the address to copy and paste into a browser window.

Another quicker way to find the desired download link is to click on Edit in the menubar of the browser

and go to Find > Find... At the top of the browser window you should now see an area where you can enter

some keyword(s) to narrow the search, for example Safari14.1.2Mojave would result in this,

You can see the search has highlighted three files that match. The one ending in .pkg is the one to download.

We are fellow users and have no knowledge of future Apple business or product planning. There is no standalone, full installer for the current version of Safari, as it is only available bundled with the operating system, or via a Security update.

Apple Releases Safari 14 Beta for Developers and Some AppleSeed Testers

Apple this week provided a Safari 14 beta to developers and some of its AppleSeed testers, a program that is separate from the public beta and is offered on an invite-only basis.

Developers who are have macOS Big Sur installed already have access to Safari 14, and Apple's experimental Safari Technology Preview browser also has Safari 14 features, but the release this week provides Safari 14 to developers who have not upgraded to Big Sur.

The beta is also the only way for developers running macOS Mojave to access Safari 14 features as ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is now limited to macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur.

Apple is planning to release a public beta of macOS Big Sur to public beta testers in the near future, which will provide Safari 14 to an additional group of people. For now, developers running Big Sur will get Safari 14 automatically, and those running Catalina or Mojave can download it from the Apple Developer site. Invited AppleSeed members can also download Safari 14 for Catalina and Mojave.
