Emotional Elton John bids America farewell from Dodger Stadium: 'Be kind to each other'

Portrait of Bryan Alexander

LOS ANGELES – The sun has gone down on Elton John's  final North American show in the place where it all began: Dodger Stadium .

"Tonight is a very special night, a very emotional night for me," said John, wearing a bedazzled jacket with tails and sunglasses, after playing "Philadelphia Freedom" on a grand piano. "It's been a long journey."

John, 75, closed out his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour  in North America on Sunday, a goodbye made even more poignant since Dodger Stadium was the famed setting for John's 1975 breakout stadium concerts.

More than 47 years ago, John's two electrifying, sequin-outfit-filled concerts at the historic baseball stadium affirmed the rising star's supernova status.

"Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium" was  livestreamed on Disney+ .

"We are making history tonight, the first-ever global stream on Disney+," John said. "And hello Dodger Stadium!"

Still recovering from a hip injury that forced the tour's postponement in September 2021, John did not move across the stage with ease, much less jump atop his piano as he did in 1975.

But his piano-pounding numbers haven't lost a step as he showed with an extended riff at the end of "Levon." After finishing the song, John slumped over the piano in (possibly) exaggerated exhaustion, only to jump back to his feet to urge more applause.

The departing superstar had help from musical guests. Brandi Carlile  sang the George Michael role alongside John for "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Holding a gold microphone, Carlile never lost her giddy expression. British singer Kiki Dee, joined John to sing their classic duet " Don't Go Breaking My Heart ," nearly five decades after the two performed the same number.

"We decide to reenact that incredible moment," John said.

Dua Lipa and John sang their hit remix "Cold Heart" (the same night the song won an American Music Award for best collaboration).

A cadre of Hollywood stars attended, some walking a pre-concert red carpet, including JoJo Siwa (wearing a "Rocketman" devil suit),   Heidi Klum , Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance , Kirsten Dunst, John Stamos , Connie Britton and "Top Gun: Maverick" star Miles Teller. Jude Law, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Neil Patrick Harris were in the audience.

Britney Spears , who recently collaborated with John on the single "Hold Me Closer," did not make an appearance.

For his encore, John returned to the stage in an outfit that harked back to his classic sparkling (and snug) 1975 Dodgers baseball uniform. The 2022 version was a full silver-shimmering Dodgers robe with the number "1" on the back. Bob Mackie recreated the classic blue baseball cap to finish the throwback look.

John brought his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, on stage.

"If it wasn't for him I would not be standing here," he said, before calling for his family to join him.

"I want to spend time with my family; I'll be 76 by the time I stop touring next year," said John, as his partner, David Furnish, brought out their sons, Zachary, 11, and Elijah, 9. "I want to bring them out here to show you exactly why I'm retiring."

The superstar, whose career was originally propelled by Los Angeles crowds, thanked the local audience for the pivotal support.

"You made me. Without America, I wouldn't be here," he said. "Thank you for all the years of love and generosity. I wish you health and love and prosperity."

John ended the show with his classic "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." At the song's end, he discarded his silver robe to reveal a tracksuit and stepped onto a lift that raised him up the stage. An animated John was shown on stage screens walking onto a heavenly Yellow Brick Road.

"Be kind to each other," John added. "And farewell."

Elton John Plays Final US Concert: Images, Set List

Elton John  has played his final U.S. concert, delivering a rousing farewell set at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Over the corse of more than two and half hours, the music legend performed many of his most beloved tracks. The night opened with the classic 1974 chart-topping single "Bennie and the Jets," before then rolling into an emphatic rendition of "Philadelphia Freedom." "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" were among the further highlights in a set that was full of them (complete set list can be found below).

Throughout the concert, Elton made reference to the historical significance of the night and his long relationship with Los Angeles. The singer mentioned that his  first performance on American shores took place at the Troubadour in West Hollywood . Five years later, he’d play a pari of sold-out performances at Dodger Stadium , the legendary gigs ranking among the most famous of his career.

Several celebrity friends joined Elton for his final American performance. Singer Brandi Carlile came out to duet on "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," while Kiki Dee later joined John in the duo's classic duet, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

After a brief pause, Elton returned for an encore, donning an outfit reminiscent of his famous sequined Dodgers ensemble from 1975. He welcomed pop star Dua Lipa to perform with him on "Cold Heart," the chart-topping hit from last year. Long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin was later brought onstage, much to the delight of the crowd.

As the performance was coming to a close, Elton spoke eloquently about his decision to retire from the road.

“I’m stopping touring, and this will be my last concert in America and Canada," the singer confessed. "And the reason why I’m [done] touring, I think you know, is because I want to spend time with my family. So, I want to bring them out and show you why I’m retiring: David, Zachary and Elijah.” At this point John's husband, David Furnish, and the couple's two sons came on stage, once again eliciting a roar from the crowd.

Elton then gave a heartfelt thanks to his U.S. fans.

"I became successful first in America," the rocker noted, while expressing his gratitude to everyone who purchased his music and attended his concerts. "So I want to thank you for that. You made me. Without America, I wouldn’t be here.”

Before playing his final song of the night, the rock icon delivered one parting message: “I wish you health, and love, prosperity. Be kind to each other. And farewell.”

Elton John performs at Dodger Stadium to wrap U.S. leg of farewell tour

Amy Powell Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It was a night to remember for Elton John fans as the singer-songwriter performed a lively and emotional set at Dodger Stadium to wrap up the U.S. leg of what is expected to be his final tour.

Los Angeles holds a special place in John's heart, as his 1975 performances at the ballpark - in a sequined Dodgers uniform - were considered one of the most iconic shows of his early career.

Sunday he performed in a glittering Dodger-themed robe that was a callback to that original outfit.

John, 75, has said he plans to retire from performing at the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. After wrapping up in Los Angeles, he'll perform in Australia and New Zealand early next year to conclude the tour.

The crowd - and the stage itself - were filled with celebrities. John called Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlile to perform with him.

Carlile says Elton John has been an inspiration to her since childhood.

"It's so amazing," Carlile said. "It's a first time for me and a last time, of sorts, for him and it feels mystical."

Elton John has a long list of hits and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Some of his most memorable songs include "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle in the Wind" and many, many others.

He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1988 in recognition not only of his artistic contributions but his charitable work.

The Dodger Stadium performance will be available to stream on Disney+.

Elton John’s final tour revisits LA glory with Lipa, Carlile

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elton John’s audacious 1970 U.S. debut at a local nightclub moved a critic to declare that the slight young Englishman would become one of rock’s most important stars. It didn’t take long.

Within five years, his reputation cemented by a string of hits including “Rocket Man” and “Daniel,” fans packed L.A.'s Dodger Stadium for two rousing, sequin-bedecked concerts. This weekend, John will close out the North American leg of his last tour at the ballpark.

He calls it the right choice.

“I started off in Los Angeles at the Troubadour (club), and I want it to end here because it’s been a magical place for me,” John said in an Associated Press interview. The three-night stand is Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17, 19 and 20.

The final L.A. concert will be streamed live on Disney+ starting at 11 p.m. EST Sunday. The three-hour event will open with “Countdown to Elton Live,” which includes an interview with John and celebrity shout-outs.

John promised more bell and whistles than at the tour’s other concerts — but hopefully without “any elephants or giraffes coming on stage,” he said, a wry reference to “The Lion King.” The Tony-winning hit musical with songs by John and Tim Rice marks its 25th anniversary on Broadway this month.

The stadium stage is “enormous and fantastic. The videos are wonderful. I like to be surprised, so I will be surprised,” John said.

His influence “spans generations, making this last North American stop on his farewell tour one for the record books,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.

The rock ‘n’ roll giant’s enduring body of work includes “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” He’s earned six Grammy Awards, including a Legend Award, and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His record sales worldwide have surpassed 300 million.

John is reaching new audiences through hit-making collaborations with younger artists, including Britney Spears ( “Hold Me Closer,” an update of “Tiny Dancer”) and Dua Lipa (“Cold Heart”) .

Lipa, Kiki Dee and Brandi Carlile will join him on stage Sunday, and it’s no coincidence that all are women. He’s had rewarding creative relationships with female artists, he said, and the three are “very important singers in my life.”

He and Dee had a 1976 hit with the bouncy “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and she was with him at his first L.A. stadium show. John is close to Carlile, who joined him for “Simple Things” on his 2021 “The Lockdown Sessions” album, and their families vacation together. It’s a big week for Carlile, who earned seven Grammy nods Tuesday.

As for Lipa, “I love her dearly,” John said. He credits their “Cold Heart” single with giving his career a boost and “launching me into a different stratosphere as far as streaming goes and connecting with young people.”

“I feel modern. I feel elated with working. When you work with a different artist, you always learn something from them, and that’s the whole point,” he said. His collaboration with Spears, which was suggested by his husband, David Furnish, yielded that and something more.

“It was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again,” John said. “To see that (single) become a success makes me feel so happy, that she’s hopefully feeling the love from those people.”

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began in September 2018 in Pennsylvania with the first of the 300-plus dates scheduled worldwide. It was suspended in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic and resumed in 2021 in New Orleans.

In January, John heads to Australia and New Zealand, then moves on to Britain and Europe. The tour is set to conclude in Sweden next July.

The schedule would be demanding for any artist, but a genial, healthy-looking Elton showed no sign of strain in an interview last week, a few hours before a San Diego concert. Reviews have noted his vitality: “His unmistakable baritone sounds as mighty and resonant as ever, and his energy at the ivories remains positively infectious,” Billboard magazine said of his New Jersey stadium show last July.

“I’m not tired,” John told AP. “The audiences are absolutely amazing. They dress up, it’s like a big party. And so rather than seeing it as a chore ... I’m going on stage every night thinking, ‘What are they going to be wearing tonight? What’s going to be the reaction tonight?’ At the stage of my career, it’s just an astonishingly rewarding thing to happen.”

He was a tender 23 when Robert Hilburn, the then-Los Angeles Times music critic, predicted John’s stardom after the Troubadour appearance in West Hollywood. Hilburn said John’s performance that August night “was, in almost every way, magnificent” and called his songs (written with lyricist Bernie Taupin) “staggeringly original.”

Success followed success. While John describes the 1975 stadium concerts as the pinnacle of his career at that time, he wasn’t in the “happiest place.” He recalled a dark period of instability (dramatized in the 2019 biopic “Rocketman”) that included a pill overdose three days ahead of the shows.

Such turmoil is far removed from his life now, which includes his two sons with Furnish.

“I’m happy, I’m contented,” said John, who’s in his third decade of sobriety. “I have a wonderful husband, a great family, I have great friends, a wonderful career. I’ve everything that any person could ever want in their life. I’ve never been as happy personally than I am now, at 75 years of age.”

“If I hadn’t got sober, I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have had the wonderful things that have happened to me since,” he said.

A prominent activist, he’s shared his name and good fortune. He created the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which reports raising more than $500 million. In 2019, President Emmanuel Macron gave France’s highest award to John for his contributions to the arts and efforts to fight HIV/AIDS around the world.

Is the Yellow Brick Road tour really goodbye? “It is definitely the farewell tour,” he said, although a short-term residency, such as Kate Bush’s three weeks at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in 2014, has its appeal.

“But to be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I’ll be looking forward to taking a breather,” he said. Then it’s back to work on projects already in progress, including “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.”

That’s for starters.

“I’ll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything,” John said. “But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”

Elton John Bids Farewell To The Road At Guest-Filled Dodger Stadium Finale [Photos/Videos]

When Elton John  performed his iconic 1975 concerts at Los Angeles, CA’s  Dodger Stadium , he was on a historic hot streak. The two albums he released that year,  Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and  Rock of the Westies , had both debuted in the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, something no artist had previously accomplished. The sequin Dodgers uniform he wore at the shows went on to be enshrined at the original Hard Rock Cafe . Even in the City of Angels, the land of stars, the 28-year-old Elton John shined brighter than the rest.

On Sunday, November 20th, 2022, Elton John, 75, wrapped up his final North American tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, with one last hurrah at Dodger Stadium. In addition to bringing the bedazzled Dodger uniform look out of retirement—with some functional sartorial adjustments—the climactic show highlighted both his continued star power and his gravitational pull on the world of popular music even half a century later.

The three-hour event, streamed live on Disney+  as  Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium , featured a number of high-profile special guests.  Brandi Carlile , the 25-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who is up for seven honors in 2023 including Record of the Year and Song of the Year, joined in with Elton not on their  Lockdown Sessions duet, “Simple Things”, but on 1974 classic “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”, which had received a notable reading at Dodger back in ’75. John used the touching performance as an opportunity to pay tribute to the various band members he’s lost through the years.

He dedicated “Border Song” to the late  Aretha Franklin , whose 1972 cover of the track became an even bigger hit than the original. He brought out Kiki Dee , who famously recorded “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton back in 1976, to help him perform the duet live for the first time since 2016.

To open the encore, Elton John brought out contemporary pop princess Dua Lipa for “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)”, which just last year gave him his latest Top Ten hit in the U.S.—his first such smash since his re-recorded 1997 “Candle In The Wind” surged up the charts following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales . A tear-jerking “Your Song” and a gracious “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” featuring introductions for his family and his longtime songwriting partner,  Bernie Taupin , finally brought Elton John’s last U.S. tour to a close.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Elton John (@eltonjohn)

As Elton said in a Monday morning post on social media, “Last night, I played my 204th and final North American tour show ever. I can’t thank each and every person who was a part of it, at Dodger Stadium and watching at home, enough for the most incredible night. I love you all and you will forever be in my heart the music world’s brightest young star.”

While the final Elton John tour has come to a close, his story as an artist may still continue. On record, he’s still storming the charts and pumping new music into the public consciousness; his 2022 collaboration with Britney Spears , “Hold Me Closer”, bowed at #6 on the Billboard 100 singles chart in April.

On the stage, well, that choice will come down to Elton John. As David Furnish , Sir Elton’s husband and manager, told Billboard in a new interview, “It’s really important to make a distinction between Elton retiring from touring but Elton not playing his very last public performance for the very last time. Will Elton return as a live performer? I hope so! It’s in his blood.”

Below, check out the full setlist from the final night of the Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at Dodger Stadium and a selection of videos from the guest-filled performance. Watch the final Dodger Stadium show on-demand in its entirety via Disney+ .

John sang the entirety of the set benched, as it were — except for the moments in-between songs when he would stand and spread his arms in exultation, then turn to get a sip of water (which also had the effect of showing off the glitzy, embroidered “Elton” on the back of his tuxedo jacket)… and also with the exception of the duets with Dee and Lipa, which placed him up close with them in “we’re still standing” position.

Apart from the set list, John had a few other closing-night wrinkles. In a nightly moment where he talked about L.A. being special because of what showcasing at the Troubadour did for him in 1970, this night he name-checked former Los Angeles Times rock critic Robert Hilburn for giving him the review there that caught the industry’s attention. And he brought out first the man without whom he said he wouldn’t be there, lyricist Bernie Taupin, and then the family for which he said he had to be leaving, husband and manager David Furnish and their children.

There was no name-checking of any of the celebrity attendees in the house, most of whom attendees and the media had little idea of, but a press release issued in the wee hours from Disney+ cited Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Taron Egerton, Jude Law, Billie Jean King, H.E.R. and Donatella Versace as well as Mitchell among those who were taking the concert in. Many celebs and entertainment personalities made their presence known earlier by stopping to pose on the red carpet, including Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Miles Teller, Kirsten Dunst, JoJo Siwa, Connie Britton, Christopher Lloyd, Heidi Klum, Lucy Hale, Jenna Dewan, John Stamos, Raven Simone, Sara Gilbert, Sophia Bush, Lisa Rinna, Diana Jenkins and Reed Horstmann.

Notably absent at the Disney+ pre-reception on the premises were a number of expected high-level Disney execs, some of them said to be turning around at the last minute to deal with even more pressing company issues than a big moment for their streaming service — namely, the shocking return of Bob Iger as Disney CEO and ousting of Bob Chapek, something that was announced right as partygoers were arriving for the Disney+ soiree.

For those around the world who missed the livestream, a message on screen at the end of the show promised that the concert would be up on Disney+ for on-demand viewing soon.

The “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour stretched to 183 shows in the U.S. and Canada, including the final three-night run in L.A. that was attended by 140,000 fans.

Goodbye, Elton John: Inside the music legend's final Dodger Stadium concert

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

After a dazzling opener on Thursday and a triumphant encore on Saturday ("Saturday, Saaaaturday!"), Elton John returned to Dodger Stadium on Sunday for his final North American bow.

The legendary performer let the sun go down on Los Angeles one last time as he stepped back onto the stage that catapulted him to superstardom nearly 50 years ago . At Sunday's performance of the North American leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, John was joined by collaborators Dua Lipa, Brandi Carlile and Kiki Dee.

But they weren't the only stars who came out to support the renowned singer and pianist at his grand Dodger Stadium finale, which was available to stream live on Disney+ . Other celebrities in attendance included Joni Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Lizzo, Heidi Klum, Angela Bassett, Jude Law, Billie Jean King, H.E.R., Donatella Versace, Miles Teller, Kirsten Dunst, JoJo Siwa, Connie Britton, Christopher Lloyd, John Stamos, Raven-Symoné and Taron Egerton, who portrayed John in the 2019 biopic "Rocketman."

“This is a very special night for me — a very emotional night for me — and it’s been a long journey,” John told the crowd.

“I first came here to America in 1970 to the City of Angels … and I played a club called the Troubadour … and it helped me by accelerating my career in America with a review I got from Robert Hilburn for the L.A. Times . So I'll never forget that.”

In line with his previous Farewell Yellow Brick Road shows , John performed several of his greatest hits — from "Tiny Dancer" and "Bennie and the Jets" to "Saturday Night's Alright" and "Your Song." He also showcased his supporting acts by peppering in some duets: “Cold Heart” featuring Lipa, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” featuring Carlile and, of course, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” featuring Dee.

“In 1975, my next guest was here and sang with me, and we sang this song,” John said before introducing Dee.

“I thought it would be great to reenact that incredible moment. So I asked her to come over, and she did. Here is Kiki Dee!”

Hordes of fans across generations arrived early to the ballpark to beat traffic, which was predictably nightmarish ahead of Thursday and Saturday's shows. Sunday was no exception.

“I've been listening to him since my parents … and then going through the AIDS crisis, he stepped up and took the lead … which really meant a lot to me,” said concertgoer Sean Masse, a 53-year-old registered nurse from South L.A. who was dressed in his own extra-bedazzled version of John’s iconic Dodgers uniform from 1975. “Plus, everything he went through with his sobriety and his drug use … he's been a beacon of light to everybody.”

“Elton John is an icon,” echoed concertgoer Thad Epting, a 51-year-old car salesman from Canyon Lake who wore a rainbow suit with a feather boa and flashing hat. “He’s one of the greatest songwriters ever, and as a kid I heard countless Elton John songs. … With my kids growing up, we were always singing Elton John songs in the car. So it’s been part of my childhood, part of my adulthood, part of my kids’ childhood.”

Before saying his final goodbyes, John still had a few more tricks up his sparkly sleeves. Near the end of the show, he welcomed to the stage his longtime songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, who embraced his friend and gave a warm shout-out to John’s band.

“We’ve been writing together since 1967, and we … love each other more than we’ve ever done before,” John said. “He’s amazing.”

Up next was John’s husband, David Furnish, and their two sons, Elijah Joseph Daniel and Zachary Jackson Levon, who waved to the audience amid thunderous applause. John explained that he has decided to stop touring in order to spend more time with his family, who he brought out “to show you why I am retiring.”

With his Dodger Stadium swan song behind him, John is gearing up for the epilogue of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour — which will resume abroad next year and conclude in Stockholm in July.

“Thank you all for dressing up. It makes me so happy to see when you wear the most fantastic costumes,” John said during his final speech of the night.

“I became successful first in America, and you bought the singles and the albums … the cassettes, the CDs — and more importantly you bought tickets to the shows, which I love more than anything … I want to thank you for that because you made me. Without America, I wouldn’t be here. … I wish you health and love, prosperity. Be kind to each other, OK? And farewell.”

On Tuesday, the “Rocket Man” singer shared the latest dates for his final tour, while adding an extra night to his previously announced run of shows at Dodger Stadium — Nov. 19-20 — in Los Angeles. John will now perform at the storied venue on Nov. 17 as well.

“It’s hard to believe that after tomorrow in St. Louis, I’ll have just a handful of shows left before I wrap up my final arena performances in the United States,” John said in a video posted to social media . “This year, we’ll see my grand finale in North America, playing stadiums all around the country with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had.”

John’s career will be coming full circle with the three final Dodger Stadium shows. He last performed there in October 1975, selling out back-to-back concerts that became some of his most iconic performances. At the time, John was only the second musical act to perform at Dodger Stadium, nine years after the Beatles performed there in 1966.

“Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I cherish these memories we’re making together that has been nothing short of incredible, and I look forward to seeing you very soon, one last time, on my ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour,” John, 75, said.

Another user wrote, “A third show at Dodger Stadium best part of half a century after Elton’s debut is quite remarkable.”

John’s announcement comes after raising a record-breaking $8.6 million on Sunday at the 30th Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party to put an end to the AIDS epidemic.

Elton John

Farewell Elton John

Philip Cosores

When are you going to come down?

These are words that Elton John has sung countless times, the opening to one of his trademark hits, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” And for most of his career, the meta answer to the question has been sometime later, but not now. But that all changed in recent years, as he embarked on his final tour, cleverly dubbed “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.” A Covid pandemic slowed the run down, but on Sunday night in Los Angeles — as well as around the world on Disney+ — he took his final American bow, playing his last scheduled US tour date at a location steeped in Elton lore. Will it actually be the last time American audiences can see him? That feels unlikely, be it a one-off or something else, but for the moment, this was goodbye. When are you going to land? Right now, apparently.

The reason for hanging them up is noble enough: to spend time with his young sons, whose mid-70s father has been working globally for most of their lives, and most of his own. Before the final song on Sunday night, he brought the family out to show who he was leaving life on the road for.

It’s not for any declining ability to perform. For most of the 2.5 hour set, Elton sounded stunning while in his standard, soulful register. Sure, he might not be able to hit the highest notes anymore, but he elegantly sang around the natural limitations of age at the peaks of “Tiny Dancer” and “Rocket Man.” (In comparison, someone like Paul McCartney opts to surround himself with many backing singers to help carry the tunes. There’s no right or wrong way to age as a performer and both are affecting successes, but there was something particularly admirable in Elton not having a chorus of singers behind him, allowing for an appreciation of just how much of his youthful vocals do remain.)

And it’s certainly not for waning relevance. Just in the last year, Elton found himself in the top 10 of the Hot 100 with his clever Dua Lipa collaboration, “Cold Heart,” which the pair playfully performed in concert on Sunday. It’s just one recent example of his embracing whatever cultural trends are happening, something that has punctuated every era of his career. His been animated on both The Simpsons and South Park , performed at the VMAs with Eminem and Axl Rose. When Britney Spears released a comeback single this year, it was with Elton John . ’90s kids will love him for writing music for The Lion King , and 2010s kids might wind up loving him for the Oscar-winning Rocketman . There’s never been a period where Elton John wasn’t touching modern culture. Even looking around my section of the audience, you could spot John Stamos, Josh Homme, and Jojo Siwa rocking out, different worlds and experiences with the legend colliding.

For me, though, Elton John will always be that early cassette tape I owned, a perfect object for a five-year-old to wear out, intrigued by the big glasses and white suit that the man donned on the cover. He created music so timeless that a child could obsess over how instantly accessible and permanently memorable each song was, and feel the same thing 30-plus years later in concert. One person behind us held up a sign that read “Thank you Elton John for my life” and I couldn’t agree more — as a person that gets paid to read and write about music, that early exposure to Elton John’s music helped set me along my path.

But regardless of how or when the tens of thousands of Angelenos in attendance came to Elton John’s music, we were all saying farewell the same way. We all wore little blinking bracelets that changed color with the music. We all sang our loudest to “Burn Down The Mission” and “Levon.” We all shed a tear as Elton paid tribute to Aretha Franklin for “Border Song” and his fallen bandmates ahead of “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” the latter spruced up as a duet with Brandi Carlile. We all smiled from ear to ear as confetti rained down at the end of “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and as Kiki Dee took the stage to duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

But mostly we all savored the moment. Elton didn’t really bask in the ending of it all, giving nods to his connection to the city without pressing for sentimentality — he shouted out the LA Times’ Robert Hilburn for jumpstarting his career with his famed 1970 Troubadour review and paid homage to his 1975 rhinestone Dodger uniform with a new rhinestone Dodger robe, perfect for retirement. Looking around, at fans young and old, there was an abundance of gratitude and appreciation for a legacy that extends far beyond the music.

If we’re going by music alone, Elton John could still stand ahead of most anyone from the classic rock era (shouts to his lyrics partner Bernie Taupin as well). But things like his advocacy for AIDS and LGBTQ rights, his knighthood, his numerous Grammys and Oscars and Tonys, his iconic tributes to Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana and so much more make him the kind of enduring cultural monument that can hardly be matched. He might be gone from touring in America (head to Europe or Australia in 2023 if you want to catch him), but he’ll never be gone from our imagination. His impact will continue to ripple long after the last song is sung.

The concert special is part of a larger production deal with Disney+, which will also premiere a documentary about John, directed by R.J. Cutler and David Furnish

If you haven't been able to attend a concert on Elton John 's Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour , you'll soon be able to watch his final US concert from the comfort of your couch.

At Disney's D23 Expo over the weekend, the corporation announced that Disney+ will broadcast an exclusive livestream of Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium on Nov. 20 as part of a larger production deal with the "Rocketman" performer.

In May, Deadline reported that a documentary about John, 75, titled Goodbye Yellow Brick Road : The Final Elton John Performances And the Years That Made His Legend will premiere at festivals and in theaters before debuting on Disney+, though no release date has been announced yet.

According to the outlet, the documentary will be directed by R.J. Cutler and John's longtime partner David Furnish and feature never-before-seen concert clips from the past 50 years as well as handwritten journals and modern footage of the "Bennie and the Jets" performer and his family.

"There are no superlatives left to describe Elton John and his impact on music and culture — he's simply unrivaled," Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, told the outlet at the time, noting John's longtime relationship with the company, as he composed music for 1994's The Lion King . "Like a good Disney story, Elton's music has both universal appeal and the ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level.'

Cutler, who recently directed AppleTV+'s Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry , said at the time, "What a thrill and an honor it is that David Furnish and I get to create this intimate and unique look at one of the world's most celebrated artists. As it has for so many others, Elton John's music has had deep meaning for me for decades, and this opportunity is nothing short of a career highlight and privilege."

Furnish, 59, also gave a statement to Deadline about the documentary upon its announcement, writing, "Elton and I could not think of a better collaborator than R.J. Cutler for a film that represents more than just Elton's career — it's his life. From the Troubadour to Dodger Stadium, we knew that R.J. would help guide Elton's story and its many layers in a way that feels authentic and evocative. We're ecstatic to be working together."

Earlier this month, while appearing on the the Hits Radio Breakfast show with Fleur East , John shared that he's going to take a break once his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour wraps for good in Sweden in July 2023.

"After next year when I finish in Stockholm, I'll go on a bit of a hiatus and figure out what I'm going to do next," said John, who also recently announced he'll be part of a theatre adaption of the life of Tammy Faye Messner and her first husband, Jim Bakker. Tammy Faye will premiere in October at the Almeida Theatre in London.

"I probably won't release anything next year, but who knows?," the five-time Grammy Award winner teased on the radio show. "I might do something on someone else's record, but not on mine."

After wrapping the US leg of his "final tour" in November, John will play shows in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

It's already been a busy summer for John, who released " Hold Me Closer ," a collaboration with Britney Spears, last month. The dance-pop track was an instant hit, and debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Spears her first top-10 single in nearly a decade.
