Siesta Beach Siesta Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip: In addition to seeking sea shells during a walk on the beach, keep an eye out for fossilized sharks' teeth, which vary in size and blacken over time. – Susan B. Barnes

If you're looking for more from a beach than walking or lounging in the sun, Siesta Beach may be your answer. In addition to its famous crystal clear water and white sand that doesn't get hot – even in the heat of the summer – Siesta Beach has two concession stands, a playground, chair and umbrella rentals, and pickleball, tennis and sand volleyball courts. Lifeguards are on duty seven days a week (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and public restrooms are available to freshen up after a day of play. Perhaps the most popular amenity is the parking lot at Siesta Beach: there are 950 spaces.

Turtle Beach Turtle Beach free

It's not only people who flock to Siesta Key. For generations sea turtles come to the island to lay their eggs on its beaches. One of those beaches is Turtle Beach, so named for its sea turtle habitat. During sea turtle nesting season, May 1 through October 31, female sea turtles come onshore overnight to build their nest and lay their eggs. After incubating for about two months, baby sea turtles hatch and make their way to the Gulf of Mexico. If you're lucky enough to spot a mama sea turtle building her nest and laying her eggs, or see the babies hatch, be sure to give them room: it's illegal to interact with the sea turtles in any way.  Even if you're not a turtle, Turtle Beach is a terrific place to spend a few hours, or an entire day. Not only is the white sand appealing, but so are its picnic areas, playground, fishing pier, and canoe and kayak launch from which you can explore the mangrove lagoon. There are even outdoor showers to wash off before heading off to your next destination.

In addition to free parking, Turtle Beach has a small campground with 39 RV and tent sites. Sites cost $65 per night from November through April and $56 per night from May to October.

You'll not only find the same fine, white sand as Siesta Beach, but a terrific opportunity for snorkeling and diving at the coral-rich Point of Rocks. Though it's considered slightly more exclusive, Crescent Beach is surprisingly easy to get to via two public access points right off of Midnight Pass Road, one of which is Public Access #12 near Stickney Point Road. To get here, you can take the free Siesta Island open-air trolley and hop off at Stickney Point Road or Midnight Point Road. If you do drive, try and arrive early to snag one of the free parking spots.

About 25 miles north of Siesta Key – around an hour's drive – is Anna Maria Island, a barrier island off the coast of Bradenton overlooking Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Long a favorite among Floridians, Anna Maria boasts its own stretch of wide, soft, white sand beaches that run the entire length of the island – 7 miles.

The beaches on the northern end of the island, including Bean Point Beach and North Holmes Beach, are quieter than those in the middle and at the southern end of the island. Lifeguards are on duty every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 11 lifeguard towers span from Manatee Public Beach in the middle of the island to Coquina Beach at the southern end.

Siesta Key Drum Circle Siesta Key Drum Circle free

If you find yourself on Siesta Beach on a Sunday as sunset nears, you may start to hear the beat of a drum. And then another. And another. If you have the time, hang around and enjoy the Siesta Key Drum Circle, a revered Sunday tradition since its beginning in 1996. As the evening progresses, more drummers arrive to join the circle and play their beats, and those who'd like the listen are invited to join, too. After all, this is a time to let loose and let the music move you.

People who recently watched the Siesta Key Drum Circle say that the entertainment was a fun addition to watching the sunset at the beach, and others suggest bringing a blanket or chair to relax while listening to the music and watching the people who join in and dance.

Mere steps from Siesta Key Village is Sunset Point, a small, quiet stretch of beach at the end of Avenida Messina, accessible from Public Beach Access #2. Though a terrific spot to visit any time of the day, sunset is a popular time because of the point's unobstructed views of the Gulf of Mexico. The remains of a pier that has washed away peek out of the water, which can make for good photo ops.

Sunset seekers say Sunset Point is a terrific place to go for a walk and watch the sun set into the water, though parking can be tricky. An alternative is to either walk from Siesta Key Village or ride the free Siesta Island open-air trolley to the access point.

Siesta Key Farmers Market Siesta Key Farmers Market free

Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. organic farmers, makers and more arrive in Siesta Key Village for the Siesta Key Farmers Market (which is just up the road from Siesta Key Oyster Bar ). Not only will you find fresh produce to enjoy during your days at the beach, but locally made food to fill your picnic baskets, and perhaps even a new beach cover-up or the perfect painting to remember your stay on the island. Enjoy live music as you peruse the goods, too.

Recent market shoppers say that there's a terrific variety of treats and crafts available, while others found the market to be small. Some cautioned that items may be impractical for travelers, since not all vacationers will have access to kitchens or refrigerators.

A Complete Travel Guide to Siesta Key, Florida

Back Patio of Owen's Fish Camp

Repeatedly named the best beach in the country, it is baffling how undiscovered Siesta Key beach still is. The white sand against the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico is jaw-dropping enough, but add in the lack of people, chill beach town, and access to Sarasota’s nightlife and you have a combo that is worth traveling for. A small barrier island off the coast of Florida’s West coast, Siesta Key has been a long kept secret of ours.

As we’ve mentioned before, Joe and I love traveling with other people than each other once in a while. While he normally goes to football games on his boys trips, like the weekend trip to Houston he did after we spent a week eating tacos in Austin , my girls and I usually opt for something a bit different – I know, we’re filling too many stereotypes here.

After years of this being a solo, family, or couple trip, I recently took a group of girlfriends down to and decided enough is enough! It’s time to share this hidden gem with the MLT community. This is the complete Siesta Key Travel Guide including how to get to the island, Siesta Key attractions, the difference between the beaches, and of course, where to eat.

How to get to Siesta Key, FL

First things first, how do you get to this little barrier island? There are two airports nearby, Tampa and Sarasota. Tampa is a much larger airport and traditionally has cheaper flights, but Sarasota is closer.

The further option, the drive from Tampa to Siesta Key is a little over an hour and crosses the beautiful and scenic Sky Bridge en route. There are pull-offs along the highway with gorgeous views of the bays and intercoastal waterways. I’ve seen dolphins on this drive, no lie.

The drive from Sarasota airport to Siesta Key is about a half hour. While this is shorter than the drive from Tampa airport to Siesta Key, the flights are often cheaper. The best one just depends on where you’re flying in from and if your priority is time or money!

How to get to from Tampa to Siesta Key

With our eyes always on the budget (more money = more traveling HELLOOOOOO), we have always flown into Tampa. From here the easiest way to get to Siesta Key is by renting a car at the airport. The car is also the easiest way to get around the area during vacation.

If renting a car is not an option, there are Lyft’s by the plenty and a few shuttles that offer services to Siesta Key, but they take just as long and can be just as expensive as a taxi. For a similar cost, there are also private car companies who can chauffeur you down to the Key. These should be scheduled with advanced notice.

Where to Stay in Siesta Key

The Siesta Key accommodations market is limited, so this takes advanced planning. There is a small selection of hotels that are supposed to be beautiful, but we prefer to opt for home rentals when visiting. This last time around, we rented the second floor of a beach bungalow in an ideal location a block off the beach.

In terms of where to stay on the island, that depends on what you want. I absolutely loved the location of our last house. It was walking distance to Siesta Key village and across the street from a beach access point for Siesta Beach, my personal favorite of the three choices.

Additionally, the access point we used spit us out further from the crowds near the public parking area. While we lost the amenities of the main beach area–snack stand, bathrooms, and lifeguards–we felt it was well worth it to gain more solitude and never have our ocean views blocked by a neighbors umbrella.

Siesta Key Food

This list branches out of Siesta Key restaurants a bit and into the hot Sarasota food scene. While there is plenty to do in Siesta Key at night in terms of drinking and some decent food, the better food we’ve found is a short drive away in downtown Sarasota.

Sarasota Restaurants

Back Patio of Owen's Fish Camp

Owen’s Fish Camp – After over a decade of visiting Sarasota, I am dutifully ashamed that this past trip was my first time ever eating here. It’s Southern food done in a pretty traditional and delicious way, but what really makes this place worth the 3-hour wait is the scene. The restaurant’s few tables are housed on an open porch and enclosed restaurant with a hokey, rustic decor that manages not to feel cheesy. The real winner though is out back where you can find a one-man operation serving up grilled oysters from a charcoal pit in the ground, $5 beers in a cooler, and fresh out the pot peel-n-eat shrimp.

They also had a pot simmering of my favorite Florida snack, boiled peanuts, that they dished out in paper cups. The night my girlfriends and I went, we were happy to wait for our table with a really good bluegrass band pumping out originals and cover tunes alike under the glow of string lights. Once we did finally sit for dinner, the meal was less impressive than everything else. While the food was good, it was not nearly as good as the outdoor snacks were. However, the vibe of this place and the food being above average was enough to leave me wanting to come back.

Selva – Joe and I have been stopping at Selva every trip to Sarasota for years now, so I was delighted to bring my ladies here when we came. Full disclosure here, the Shrimp in Piri Piri sauce here used to be our favorite thing we had ever eaten. Every time we got it, we solidified our belief in the dish, even though we knew we probably should love others more based on where we’d eaten up to that point. Alas, the magic was finally broken after we ate our way around the world , but we still had a really great meal here this time around.

O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill – On a little park jutting out into the Sarasota Bay, this totally outdoor bar is a great spot to end the day. Yes, it has cheesy live music and fits right into the Florida tourist scene, but it also has cheap drinks and a beautiful view of the Sarasota skyline on the bay. While you can’t watch the sun actually set from here, the glowing sky against the waterfront buildings is magical enough.

Siesta Key Restaurants

Less impressive than nearby Sarasota restaurants, the food in Siesta Key village is more beach vacation sustenance than it is good. But, you gotta eat, and why go further from the beach than you need to? This is the food that is better than others if you need to stay on the island to eat.

Old Salty Dog – A half-indoor, half-outdoor, restaurant with pretty decent bar food. There are a few locations, but we went to the one on the Northern end of the strip in Siesta Village. Mainly, it’s good for some fried seafood and a beer. However the Fish Gumbo here was actually awesome, a pleasant surprise in an otherwise un-noteworthy meal.

Mini Donuts – Mini fried dough, in ring shapes, served on a skewer, AKA mini donuts! These ended up being the best food in Siesta Key in my opinion. Made fresh to order at a hole in the wall spot in the village, they come with a variety of toppings. We didn’t mean to, but the girls and I ended up eating them a couple of times during our five days here…or it could have been every day, but who’s counting? I’m a simple gal at heart, so my fave ended up being the cinnamon sugar. The iced coffee was pretty decent here as well.

Village Cafe – I don’t really care about most breakfast spots when I’m traveling, with a few notable exceptions: when we were in Southeast Asia and tasty noodle soup was the early morning option, a handmade pastry and many, many espresso shots when in Italy, and when I’m in the Southern U.S. Biscuits and gravy? Grits? This is a breakfast life I can get fully behind. Village Cafe was not the best Southern breakfast I’ve ever had by a long shot, but it did way better than I expected in this touristy little town. Another really busy place, expect to wait here in the mornings.

Siesta Key Attractions

The best things to do in Siesta Key, from kayaking the intercoastal waterways to the crazy beautiful sunsets, there is so much to do in this little waterfront paradise.

Sunset at sunset point

Living on the East coast of the U.S. for our entire lives, we get pretty damn pumped for sunsets over the water. Since we don’t regularly fly out to California, the Gulf coast of Florida has always been a treat for us. Enter my neurosis on the girls trip, the time where I got the naggiest and weird about a schedule: sunset. Hurrying us through our dinner at Old Salty Dog, I made my fried seafood stuffed companions practically sprint down the street to get to Sunset point…with a half hour to spare. Because what is a sunset on the water if you don’t have a photo shoot? The most direct view, and of course also the most crowded, is at Sunset Point.

The Beach

As an island in the Gulf of Mexico, this one should come naturally to most itineraries. The coast here is made up of 8 full miles of beachfront, not all of which is created equal. The water here is absolutely perfect. Crystal clear, calm, and this past trip, with a nice sandbar to break up the swim out to sea. I spend hours in the water here without fail, I can’t help myself. It’s too perfect. See the breakdown of beach options below, pulled from the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce , to decide which fits your vacation best.

  • Siesta Beach –  The most popular and largest of the beach options, this is also my favorite. If you are staying off key and driving in, there are multiple parking lots along the beach. The smaller ones are tucked in between beachfront hotels and homes and only have roughly 10-15 parking spots in them, but these will give you access to the quieter parts of Siesta Beach. If you can’t find parking there, which you likely will not be able to if you get to the area anytime after 10:00 A.M., head to the large main parking lot to find a spot. This is also where the bathrooms, snack stand, and volleyball courts are if that’s important to you.
  • Turtle Beach – My next favorite beach. Turtle Beach does not have the same soft, white sand that is found on the adjacent one, but it is mellow and chill. The smaller sand space means fewer people which means quieter. I like this beach when I’m in the area alone, with a good book and a beach towel. This is also the best spot for activities with a playground, boat launch, horseshoe pit, and volleyball courts all nearby.
  • Crescent Beach – Unknown to most visitors, Crescent Beach is only accessible by a single point. The beach is here is calm and quiet with the same white sand beach as Siesta. There are rocky outcroppings in the water here that apparently makes for some great snorkeling as well.

Kayak in the Mangroves

This was another first time experience for me that should have been in the repertoire since Day 1. Launching from Lido Key, there are many companies that offer kayak and SUP for rent to take out into the glorious mangrove tunnels, but we opted for Sea Life Kayak based on a recommendation. They were great and had single kayaks for half and full day rentals for $33 and $43 respectively. There are also tandems and SUPS if you prefer.

S adly, we did not see manatees or dolphins on our paddle. However, the experience of floating through the mangrove tunnels, the branches intertwined above us to lend a mysterious chill to the afternoon heat, was more than enough to leave us very happy. This area does get a bit crowded, though it was pretty easy for us to have our own space by paddling out in a different direction at times. There are also tours available if you’d prefer to stick with the group.

To get to Lido Key from Siesta Key is a quick 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic. You have to backtrack off the island, cut through Sarasota along Rt 41, and turn left to cross the bridge into Lido. To get to Longboat Key, take a right once on Lido and cross the bridge onto the third local key.

Sunset Drum Circle

Started in 1996, the drum circle at Siesta Key is its own entity. There’s even a destination for it on google maps. Held every Sunday at sunset, the wild dancing, drumming, and sense of community is fun and heartwarming. Not to mention, there’s no bad reason to watch the sunset here. See their Facebook page for up to date info or to connect beforehand if you’re skeptical.

Yoga on the Beach

A donation based 90-minute yoga class held four days a week in the soft sands of Siesta beach. The class is a fun way to start the day. Trust me, you’ll be sweating by the time that sun is hitting the 10:30 mark in the sky. I usually hop right in for a swim after the class. The yoga + morning swim combo is guaranteed to make you feel like an actual superhero. If you are able, be generous with your donation. The teacher relies on your payments to keep this awesome practice going. Plus, you may be helping to cover a class for someone who is unable to pay for one. Win-win!

Sarasota has a good reputation for nightlife, though I must admit I have personally never sampled it. When we were leaving dinner on a Friday night around 12:00 A.M., the streets were packed with beautiful people cramming into dance clubs and bars with live music. I’m old, at least in spirit, so this is past my normal bedtime, but it all looks fun! Siesta Key village has a pretty good beach bar vibe with loud, bad cover bands as well if that’s more your scene.

Mote Marine Lab

Fun fact about me: I have a deeply rooted love for Marine Biology. I studied it in college, got a degree in Ecology, and worked in the field for a few years before jumping ship (see what I did there?). I was even offered an internship here, which I desperately wanted, but ultimately could not financially afford to take. While I often daydream of going back to the work, for now, I stick to the role of visiting guest.

Mote Marine Laboratory on Longboat Key makes for a great rainy day indoor activity, but honestly, its cool enough to go even when the sun’s out. My personal favorite is to time a visit with the manatee feeding. The massive sea creatures are given full heads of iceberg lettuce which they proceed to grab between their flippers and bring to their mouths, burying their faces in each one until they’ve eaten their way through it. Can you say ADORABLE? I freak out every time, without fail, squealing in delight like some kind of deranged barn animal.

Dinner cruise on the harbor

I used to take my grandmother out on these when I’d visit her. They’re usually held in the early evening, can have live bands, a full bar, and serve food depending on the option you choose. The boats will scoot around the Bay and intercoastal for an hour or two, with a guide pointing out historical points of interest or, mostly, the absurdly large houses of the rich and famous. The tours are a bit cheesy but they’re nice, especially when timed with those gorgeous sunsets we keep talking about. There are plenty of companies offering these, pick whichever you’re most comfortable with and go for a spin.

St. Armands Circle

My mom LOVES St. Armands Circle and honestly, I kind of do too. It’s really touristy, overpriced, crowded, and has a lot of qualities that I don’t normally like, but there’s something about it that always makes me want to stop in on my trips to the area. Maybe its nostalgia, I’m not sure. Either way, it makes for a fun spot for shopping and wandering in a comfortable setting. Go at night for more of a vacation feel. Spend time wandering the circle and popping into shops, preferably with an ice cream cone in hand.

Go For a Beach Run

Beach running is one of my favorite activities no matter where I am in the world. Really, any kind of running on any vacation is such a great way to explore an area. Added bonus, this is a totally free experience! This sand is great for barefoot running too if you’re into that.

Travel Tips for Siesta Key

There are several free ways to get around the island if you don’t want to rent a car:

*Note that “free” means a tip is expected and appreciated

  • Siesta Key Breeze Trolley – The only actual free ride, this is run by the county. It stops at what used to be the public bus route but is now this free service. The trolley can be flagged down along Midnight Pass Road. The route runs from the village all the way to Turtle Beach.
  • Johnny’s Original Free Ride – Call 941-928-9200 15-20 minutes in advance for a ride
  • Siesta Key Free Ride – Call 941 952 8294. These guys use electric vehicles making them our number one choice for rides!

Or rent bicycles! The best way to get around the island. It’s small enough to explore on two wheels, and you’ll find yourself whizzing past those sitting in traffic.

Also, there are not many accommodation options on Siesta Key itself. Hotels are expensive and Airbnb’s are limited. Book well in advance or stay off the island for a cheaper option.

Looking for another island getaway in the Florida sun? Check out Marco Island for a different vibe with gorgeous beaches.

Such a wonderful area! Beautiful beaches, great restaurants and nightlife. Also a good place to take the family on vacation. I found this article helpful as well as http://www.siestaBeach.org for information on the Siesta Beach area. There was good information on beach accesses, rentals and the beach report. I love with Siesta Beach!

Hello! I am in Siesta Key right now! I am loving every minute of it and following your suggestions! I have two questions. I have asked where Sunset Point is and no one can tell me. Can you help? Also, we tried to find the outlet to Cresent beach and we couldn’t. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hope we’re still able to catch you while we’re there. Sunset Point: If you’re at the beach facing the ocean, head all the way to the right! Maybe that’s a name we made up? Either way it’s all the way at the end. It also depends on the time of year, this time of year the sunset is beautiful from just about anywhere on the beach. Crescent Beach: Public Beach Access #12 off of Midnight Pass Rd. Hope this helps!

Thinking of visiting the area in January. Any suggestions for accomodations, looking for 1 bedroom unit for a few days.

We rented a 2 bedroom on Siesta Key last time we went through AirBnB. It was right near the beach. I would recommend a home rental site for an apartment. Have fun!

Thanks for all the tips! Was your visit in December? I’m thinking of having my birthday weekend there at the end of January and a little worried about the weather… What do you think?

First off, it’s probably a great spot for a birthday trip! So much to do. January is definitely the iffy time of year weather-wise, it’s hit or miss. We’ve been there that time of year and it’s been as low as 50s Fahrenheit and cloudy or as nice as 70s and sunny. However, there is lots to do indoors too–theatre, restaurants, opera, museums–so it really depends on what you want to do! And for us, that weather also means great hiking and outdoor activity weather, though obviously not great for the beach. Hope that helps!

LOVED your post about Siesta Key and Sarasota, Alicia! Lots of good places to visit, for sure. A few other things I love:

–The Mote Aquarium has boat tours you can take of the harbor, where they dredge the bottom and bring up sea creatures for visitors to see close up. Also a manatee rehab center in Sarasota.

–A visit to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota is well worth a visit. I’ve been there a half dozen times; twice when they had live concerts of classical music and jazz.

–Ca’ d’Zan (Venetian for House of John) — the estate built by John and Mable Ringling, right on the Sarasota waterfront. It has an amazing art collection, wine walks, and music performances during the year. Adjacent to the Ringling Brothers Circus Museum and Theatre.

–In St. Armand’s Circle: The Columbia Restaurant–awesome Spanish food, including the 1905 salad and yummy sangria.

–A yes for Turtle Beach because: parking is a breeze; it has easy access to bathrooms, picnic tables and SHADE! No concession stand, but BYOF or there is a cute restaurant across the street that has a great Sunday brunch.

Awesome suggestions, thank you for sharing these!

34 Best & Fun Things To Do In Siesta Key (Florida)

By: Author Jerric Chong

Posted on Last updated: August 14, 2024

travel and leisure siesta key

The gorgeous barrier island of Siesta Key is situated just off the southwest coasts of Florida, where it sits pretty between the Gulf of Mexico and Roberts Bay.

A portion of it lies within the city of Sarasota , though most of it is simply a part of the larger Sarasota County.

The island’s current name didn’t come about until 1952, and it was a bit of an uphill battle to attempt to develop the island for tourism and other purposes.

Siesta Key, which is technically a census-designated place, spans a relatively small area of just about 3.5 square miles, within which are four primary districts.

As you’ve probably guessed, the key is most famous for its stunning beaches, gorgeous marine life, and amazing watersports opportunities, though there is a fair bit of history and culture to explore as well.

Not sure what you can do while you’re visiting this paradise?

Here are our picks for the 34 best and fun things to do in Siesta Key, Florida.

Table of Contents

1. Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach is considered one of the best beaches in all of the United States in America – and even the world!

It’s family-friendly and is among the perfect places to go for people of all ages to enjoy all the common and essential beach activities.

Florida is simply filled with beaches along its coast, so for one of them to be considered the greatest is a huge compliment and an indication of a good place to be.

Siesta Key Beach is renowned for its delightfully soft sand that consists of 99% quartz.

This creates a sensation like walking on fine powder, and you’d be hard-pressed to find softer sand on any beach!

You’ll get to build sand castles, swim or wade in the water, sunbathe, and do all sorts of watersports.

The waters are a stunning cobalt blue that looks right out of a postcard!

The beach is open from early to late, with peak hours from 11 am to 4 pm.

It’s one of the free things to do in the area, so expect it to be quite crowded, especially on weekends.

Amenities are quite modern, with showers, a volleyball court, and bike racks, and lifeguards are on duty during most busy hours.

There are also provided beach wheelchairs, plenty of picnic areas, beautiful pavilions, spacious shelters, and even a playground for kids to enjoy!

You can buy some snacks from the full-service bar if you get hungry.

Address: 948 Beach Road, Siesta Key, FL 34242

2. Parasail Siesta

Parasail Siesta

Parasail Siesta

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Florida , parasailing is one of the most popular high-adrenaline activities that you can enjoy at Siesta Key.

Numerous spots across this barrier island in Florida have companies that offer tours and experiences related to this extreme sport.

Some are situated within the island, and others can be found at Anna Maria Island or Sarasota.

Not sure what parasailing is?

Also known by other names such as parakiting, parascending, and even paraskiing, this is a recreational kiting experience.

You ride a securely-attached canopy wing called a parasail wing that looks like a parachute, and you are then towed behind a vehicle of some kind.

On the beach, that vehicle is most frequently a boat.

The tow rope lifts you into the air as the boat speeds off.

Parasailing will allow you to witness beautiful sweeping views of the gorgeous Gulf.

Aerial views of the cerulean ocean beneath will allow you to spot native seabirds, dolphins, and manatees that frolic and live in the habitat.

There are a number of different providers of this service, with one of the most popular being Parasail Siesta .

This company will bring you to 450-foot heights during two-hours tours.

People of most ages above five can enjoy parasailing, which has become one of the Siesta Key attractions in its own right!

Try sunset tours for an extra stunning experience.

Address: 1250 Stickney Point Rd, Siesta Key, FL 34242, United States

3. Point of Rocks

Point of Rocks

Point of Rocks ( Seamoor / flickr )

One of the top 10 places to visit to snorkel in all of Florida, Point of Rocks is a stunning location formed from a collection of limestone rocks that serves as a hotbed for various sea creatures.

These formations may also be made of quartz and molluscan grindstone, and the whole place is believed to be around 4,300 years old.

It’s never too crowded and almost feels like a private piece of land, so it’s amazing that it’s one of the island’s free things to do!

Point of Rocks isn’t the easiest spot to get to, but avid snorkelers will find it to be well worth the trouble.

It’s easiest to access the site from Crescent Beach.

Head to its southernmost end and keep walking until you hit a huge sea wall.

You’ll have to then climb along that wall until you can turn a corner, and then it’s a three-step walk down into the water.

Be aware that the rocks can get pretty slippery.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to spot Point of Rocks fairly quickly.

Tide pools and rocks covered in moss are visible, some sticking out from the depths of the ocean.

The water here is just about five or so feet deep at most, and in most places, it only gets to waist level.

Still, it is home to an enormous range of marine life, such as crabs, sea sponges, and fish.

Also, tons of seashells make this a great place for avid collectors of shells.

Do note that you should wear water shoes or something similar when visiting Point of Rocks.

This is because the terrain consists almost entirely of coral and crushed shells.

The area is essentially like a small, little-known beach, so you’ll have a fun snorkeling and exploring this less-crowded place.

It’s said that pirates used to hide all sorts of treasure and gold dust here – maybe you can be lucky to find the legendary abandoned hiding hole at the point’s base!

Address: Siesta Key, FL, United States

4. Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach is situated near Siesta Key Beach, just to the south by about a mile.

It’s easy to access, located along the normal main strip of this Florida barrier island, and the local trolley stops there on its journey.

This is an ideal spot for people seeking a way to escape the oppressive crowds of the more popular beach up north.

Crescent Beach’s sand may not be as fine and soft as its more popular neighbor’s, but it is still an enjoyable place to be.

It’s also popular among Siesta Key attractions because of its close proximity to many bars, restaurants, and entertainment sites that are just a stone’s throw away from the beach.

As usual, you can enjoy many typical beach excursions here, such as jet skiing, parasailing, swimming, sunbathing, and more.

The sand doesn’t get too hot thanks to its powdery fineness, so you can enjoy a relaxing stroll.

The waves are also quite shallow, making them family-friendly and suitable for young kids.

5. Siesta Key Village

There’s no way to talk about the enticing things to do in Siesta Key without mentioning the hub of Siesta Key Village !

This fantastic hotspot spans about four blocks and is filled with a hundred or so little shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and bars, all centrally located on the barrier island.

Whether you’re seeking some swim or watersports gear or are looking for a good bite to eat, this walkable “village” has you covered.

Siesta Key Village is the place to go to find souvenirs, decor, jewelry, tarot cards, and bohemian outfits.

Many of the items you’ll find are handcrafted, and tons are inspired by the ocean or boast Caribbean influences.

A lovely art gallery within the area is packed with the creations of local artists, such as photos, paintings, and even sculptures.

This so-called village also lights up at night with great music, dancing bars and clubs, awesome DJs, and fantastic drinks to help you get your party on.

All-in-all, this is a welcoming spot that will feel like home, with a relaxed vibe but plenty of vibrant things to enjoy.

In addition to all of that, this is a hotbed for all sorts of seasonal events and festivals, so if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to check out some cool cultural or otherwise interesting goings-on.

6. Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach

As with any part of Florida, beaches are some of the best points of interest on this barrier island.

Turtle Beach is one of them – a favorite of the locals, but very much a hidden gem to visitors and tourists.

It’s a good spot for snorkeling and shell collecting, and anglers also enjoy fishing in the waters beyond the beach.

Turtle Beach is a relatively large expanse on the southern part of the island, serving as the local trolley’s final stop.

It boasts a big, tranquil park with its own pavilion, several tables for picnics, and more.

Some modern amenities include public restrooms, a boat ramp for small boats, and a campground with direct beach access.

You can also use the horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and playgrounds.

Of course, it’s the beach itself that you’ll probably come to Turtle Beach for.

The sand is darker and rougher than the island’s more popular beaches, but it’s still a fantastic spot for families to play in the sand and rest on the shore.

The shoreline is notably more cliff-like and rugged, and the sand has more seaweed mixed in, which creates a lovely backdrop for adventurous types – or just those who want a little peace and quiet.

But why is the beach called Turtle Beach?

It is a nesting habitat for sea turtles, and you may spot a few loggerhead turtle nests in the sand.

From May to October, beach gear and other items like chairs and umbrellas are not allowed on the beach so that turtles can nest in peace!

7. Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Not sure what to do in Siesta Key to get around the barrier island?

The Siesta Key Breeze Trolley provides the perfect solution.

It offers rides completely free of charge to anyone who boards and runs daily from 8 am to 10 pm.

On Fridays and Saturdays, its service extends till midnight!

And, yes, it operates every day of the year, even during holidays.

The trolley runs from Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach, with some stops that you can be dropped off at or picked up from along its route.

South of Stickney Point, you can flag the trolley down anywhere, though north of that, it will only stop at designated bus stops.

The trolley is meant to run the route every half hour, but sometimes it goes even faster than that, which is quite impressive and convenient for tourists and locals alike.

The trolley is regulated by the SKAT, or the Sarasota County Area Transportation.

It’s a great option for people looking to explore the barrier island in a convenient way without spending extra on a taxi.

It’s also just a fun experience in general to ride the trolley, so guests to the area should ride it at least once!

8. Siesta Key Drum Circle

Sunday evenings are a special time on this barrier island.

You’ll be able to attend and witness a Siesta Key drum circle at the Siesta, Nokomis, and Englewood beaches.

This is one of the best things to see on the island, especially for those who want to immerse themselves in the various cultures of Florida.

These circles are also among the free things to do, and there is no charge to join the congregations of drummers.

The drums used in these circles vary in sound, size, and even shape, but the result is a beautiful tradition and a cacophony of magical rhythm and beats.

People from all walks of life come together by the dozen for these events.

Accompanying the circle are belly dancers, firebreathers, and other performers that make for an awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping live music experience.

You don’t need to participate directly in these drum circles, but you’re very much encouraged to.

You’ll be given instruments, hula hoops, and costumes so that you can join in if you so desire.

Most of these events are family-friendly, too!

Address: 948 Beach Rd, Siesta Key, FL 34242, United States

Siesta Key Farmers Market

The Siesta Key Farmers Market opens each Sunday at 8 in the morning and runs until 12 noon.

Those who want to get in touch with what the locals do will find this to be one of the top things to do in Siesta Key.

Though it is relatively small compared to more well-known markets, it’s a good spot to grab some brunch and do a little shopping, sometimes while accompanied by live entertainment.

Farmers’ markets are an awesome way to gain insight into communities, and the Siesta Key Farmers Market is no exception.

You’ll get to browse baked goods, home decor, art pieces, jewelry, fresh and organic produce, and creative works made by local talent.

Many vendors are knowledgeable and have information to provide and advice to give about the environment and health.

Whether you’re seeking handmade gifts, artisanal food, or something unique, you’ll spot it here at the market.

There are even plenty of affordable or cheap things to get your hands on.

There are two branches of Daiquiri Deck on the island.

Each one is in a place where open containers are legal, too, so you can always buy something from the bar and head out to the Crescent and Siesta Beaches right after.

Sometimes, the establishment hosts events, special promotions, and live music and sells unique souvenirs!

The answer as to why is not about the structure’s design or history, though it is quite beautiful to look at.

No, the answer is fun and somewhat unexpected – it’s the St. Boniface Labyrinth built on its grounds!

This “labyrinth” was inspired by France’s Chartres Cathedral, and it’s one of Florida’s very first labyrinths ever constructed.

It is free to visit and is open to the public, and you can visit the chapel for a moment of quiet contemplation if desired, too.

The Labyrinth involves narrow paths carefully portrayed on the stone ground, which you’re supposed to walk through by placing one foot in front of the other as you go.

Hit The Beach

travel and leisure siesta key

No matter what brings you to Siesta Key, you’ll likely hit the beach at least once while you’re here. Siesta Key Beach has been rated one of the best beaches in the entire country, so it’s a great place to start. With such high praise comes pretty big crowds, so try to get here early and avoid weekends if you want a more peaceful experience.

If the hustle and bustle of Siesta Key is too much for you, there are plenty of other spots to sink your toes in the sand. Crescent Beach is a great alternative, and while the sand isn’t as soft, the crowds are certainly more sparse. Turtle Beach is the perfect in-between, with soft sand, fewer people, and some great amenities.

Watch A Sunset At Sunset Point

If you want to extend your beach day, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to catch a sunset. The west facing beaches create the perfect conditions for epic sunsets, so be sure to squeeze at least one in during your stay.

Sunset Point is an aptly named spot for watching the sun go down. This spot sits on the northern end of Siesta Key Beach, just in front of the Tropical Breeze Resort. Note that there are no lifeguards at Sunset Point, so enter the water at your own risk.

Ride The Free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Instead of renting a car and worrying about parking during your vacation, you can hop on the free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley! The trolley stops by all the main points of interest, starting at Siesta Village in the north and traveling down to Turtle Beach on the island’s southern end.

The route follows two of the busiest roads on the island (Beach Road and Midnight Pass Road), so you’ll get to see all the sites without worrying about finding a parking place. The best part is that the trolley is completely free and runs from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm daily.

Kayak Through The Mangroves

One of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to kayak through the mangroves in Lido Key, which sits just north of the island. This is no ordinary kayaking experience – the mangrove trees have grown so dense here that tunnels were eventually created along the waterway, creating a verdant maze for paddling.

As you paddle, you’ll have the chance to see some unique wildlife, including dolphins and manatees if you’re lucky! You can rent kayaks or stand up paddleboards from one of the many outfitters on Lido Key, or book a tour with a local guide who will help you navigate and point out local flora and fauna along the way.

Visit Siesta Key Village

Ready for a break from the beach? Spend an afternoon wandering around Siesta Key Village. Popular with locals and vacationers alike, the village features top-rated restaurants and fun shopping opportunities.

The village sits on the island’s northwest end, and it’s the first stop on the free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley. Spend some time walking around this charming area and visit art galleries, shop for souvenirs, and grab a bit to eat once you work up an appetite.

Take A Day Trip To Anna Maria Island

If you’re running low on things to do in Siesta Key and want to switch it up a bit, take a day trip to Anna Maria Island. Located about 25 miles north of the key, Anna Maria Island is brimming with fun activities and attractions.

There are more spectacular beaches, award-winning restaurants, a charming downtown area, and more to keep you busy for an afternoon or a full weekend.

Snorkel At Point Of Rocks

The crystal clear water along the coast makes Siesta Key a great spot for snorkeling. The beaches don’t offer much in the way of underwater scenery, but Point of Rocks is the perfect place for a little underwater exploration.

This half-mile-long limestone slab sits on the southern end of Crescent Beach and plays host to myriad marine life, including vibrant tropical fish, small octopus, sea sponges, crustaceans, and more! Even if you’re a beginner, fear not. The water is only 20 feet at its deepest.

Note that you will need to bring your own gear (including water shoes!) as there are no outfitters in the area.

One of the best things to do in Siesta Key is throw out a line and see what you can catch. The fishing here is excellent, whether you’re joining a fishing charter or casting out from the scenic shoreline.

If you do choose to fish right off the beach, make sure you choose a quiet spot away from the crowds. Your best bet is the south end of Siesta Key Beach, or anywhere on Crescent Beach or Turtle Beach. Note that you will need a Florida fishing license if you’re fishing on your own.

Try Parasailing

When you’re this close to the water, you’ll likely want to spend as much time on it as you can. If you tire of lazy beach days, you can turn the action up a notch and participate in some water sports.

Parasailing is one of the best things to do in Siesta Key, as you’ll be able to get the adrenaline pumping AND take in some spectacular views along the way. You may even spot dolphins, manatees, and local shorebirds while you’re in the air.

If you’re not a fan of heights, there are plenty of other water sports available. You can rent jet skis, pontoons, paddleboards, and more from various outfitters around the island.

Browse Siesta Key Village Farmer’s Market

Looking for a fun way to get around the island? Rent some bikes! At just eight miles long, you can easily cycle your way around the entire island, and you’ll be treated to some great scenery along the way!

Not only is biking a great way to see the island, but it also allows you to get to and from the most popular spots without worrying about parking. Win-win!

Visit The Circus

The nearby city of Sarasota has a rich circus history. The Ringling Brothers made the area their winter home in the 1920s, and the history lives on to this day.

The Circus Arts Conservatory puts on quite a show for visitors, though it’s no ordinary circus performance. You can choose from a variety of shows, including a European-style traditional Big Top, a historic theater, or the Sailor Circus Arena. Visiting the Ringling is one of the best things to do in Sarasota .

Visit Beer Can Island

travel and leisure siesta key

If you’re searching for hidden gems, one of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to take a trip out to Beer Can Island. It’s roughly 45 minutes north of the island, but you’ll feel worlds away on the unspoiled shores of Beer Can Island.

This serene spot welcomes you with a gorgeous white sand beach, which is typically littered with massive deposits of driftwood. Further inland, there are lush mangrove forests, creating a stark contrast to the sparkling white beach and turquoise blue ocean.

You can reach the island by boat or by land via the scenic Longboat Key Bridge.

Last but certainly not least, one of the very best things to do in Siesta Key is eat. After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing better than sitting down for a good meal, and the island has plenty of places to choose from.

Check out Anna’s Deli for world-famous sandwiches, Village Cafe for breakfast, the Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB) for oysters and good bar food, and Meaney’s Mini Donuts for dessert. These are just a few local favorites, and there are plenty of other options for every type of diner.

Rated one of the top beaches in the USA by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards™ , this beach is absolutely deserving of that title!

It’s incredibly soft sand is like walking on a fine powder. It truly doesn’t even feel like sand! The sand is actually made up of 99% quartz, making it the softest sand you’ll ever step foot on.

Siesta Key Beach is one of the most family friendly beaches in Florida for this reason, and certainly one of the best places in Florida for vacation!

It’s the perfect place to spend a day soaking up the sun, building sand castles, wading in the crystal clear water, watching the kite surfers or simply enjoying this fabulous sand.

The parking lot the size of a convention center lot, so this beach gets busy! On a Saturday afternoon, I witnessed easily over 2000 people there at once. Good thing it’s an extremely large beach!

Tips for visiting Siesta Key Beach

  • Get there early or go late. The peak of the day (11am – 4pm) is the most crowded. If you want a more peaceful experience, go early or stay for sunset.
  • Walk to the north or south end of the beach for the least people. We found the most space the furthest away from the main entrance.
  • Take beach chairs with you. If your vacation rental has beach gear, be sure to grab it!
  • Wear eco-friendly sunscreen so as it wears off, those fish and reefs are safe.

2. Play beach volleyball

things to do in Siesta Key like playing sand volleyball with view of court and net

While you’re at Siesta Beach, grab a volleyball and some friends and hit a few. It’s a fun way to get some exercise while taking a break from the water and the crowds.

The volleyball courts are located near the southern end of the Siesta Beach parking lot.

3. Ride the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Siesta Key Trolley view of green and blue trolley on road

Guysssss! I didn’t know there was a free trolley before I arrived on the island and man it was amazing! Providing vacationers and locals free rides, the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley runs daily 8am – 10pm .

It runs from the Village to Turtle Beach and will pick up or drop off anywhere along the route. The Siesta Key Breeze Trolley website says it runs every 30 minutes, but I found it was more like every 10 minutes! Just be prepared to hop on the last trolley of the day at least 30 minutes early so you’re not stranded.

If you have a hotel or vacation rental right on Beach Road / Midnight Pass Road, it’s an easy way to get around the area.

It’s one of the most fun things to do that’s also so simple and free. And for all ages, too. 🙂

4. Siesta Key Village

Siesta Key Village with view of gazebo and palm trees with shops in the distance

Full of shopping and dining, the Siesta Key Village is a really cool spot on the island. It’s busy with vacationers and locals alike, enjoying the quaint town square.

Take a walk around the village and find the perfect spot to eat, check out an art gallery, hang out in the village circle or grab a souvenir for a loved one.

Grab groceries for a budget-friendly getaway at the local market. Or find the perfect lunch or dinner spot during your island vacation or Florida road trip .

Siesta Key Village has some of the best nightlife on the island and it’s kind of the thing to do after the sun goes down. Lots of people enjoy the sights and sounds of this area, so just be prepared for crowds and long wait times at restaurants.

5. Bike rentals Siesta Key (favorite way to see the island)

bikes resting along tree near beach

Whether you rent bikes for the day or even an electric bike tour , this is a great way to see the sights of Siesta Key quickly. The island is completely bike-able, with a bike lane to choose on the street or just ride directly on the beach! If you want to take it easy, opt for the electric bike sunset tour.

Biking the island is by far one of the top things to do on Siesta Key!

6. Photo shoot (one of the most unique things to do in Siesta Key FL)

family on the beach parents and two kids at sunset

One of the best ways to capture memories with those you’re traveling with is by booking a photo session . Whether you’re on a family vacation, traveling with your significant other or friends, booking a photo session on these gorgeous Siesta Key beaches is a fun souvenir!

It’s been one of the most fun things I’ve done on vacation, and I love that our photos are displayed in our house.

I love using Flytographer when I travel. They are easy, affordable, and in most destinations – like Siesta Key! You can get $25 off if you  book through this link .

7. Crescent Beach

beach with teal water and light sand at Crescent Beach near Siesta Key Beach

More white sandy beaches? Yes please!

Just to the south of Siesta Key Beach is Crescent Beach. It’s along the main strip and easily accessible via the trolley. With the main attraction on the island up at Siesta Beach, it leaves Crescent Beach desirable for less crowds.

This is a great place to hang out if you want a bit more space!

The sand isn’t quite as fine as it’s famous neighbor, and there’s a few more seashells hanging out too. But the nice thing about Crescent Beach is that it’s a short walk to several restaurants and bars, providing lots of options for entertainment.

My favorite break from Crescent Beach is up next…

8. Daiquiri Deck

things to do in Siesta Key visiting Daiquiri Deck holding pink drink in cup

If you’re a fruity drink lover, then Daiquiri Deck is your spot! The lineup is fully blended cocktails in early every flavor imaginable. With fun drink names like Banana in the Bush, Monkey Berry, Voodoo Love Shake and so many more, this place is a good time!

The two-story restaurant offers excellent open air seating, perfect for half-wet swim apparel. And bonus – it has great food here too. Some of my favorite blacked fish I’ve ever eaten was at Daiquiri Deck !

Oh, and did you hear open containers are legal here? Grab some drinks to go and hit the beach! I recommend taking a reusable, insulated mug to keep your drink cool. It worked out great during my days on Siesta Beach and Crescent Beach!

Here’s that tumbler link again…and don’t forget the reusable straws too!

Siesta Key: things to do

Can you believe this list? We’ve barely scratched the surface of all the awesome things to do in Siesta Key! One of my favorites is up next…

9. Mangrove kayaking (perfect activity for your Siesta Key vacation)

kayaks on water through low hanging trees

Okay, this on isn’t exactly on the island, but it’s so close – and so much fun – that it has to be included on this mega list!

Located on Lido Key, this kayaking experience is like no other! You’ll kayak through the mangrove tree tunnels at Ted Sperling Park and nature preserve. Bring your own kayaks or take a mangrove tour with knowledgeable guides.

You’ll want to spend a few hours on the water, which by the way, is easy to row and not too intense of a workout. Plan a morning tour or afternoon over on Lido Key exploring the natural environment.

Watch for wildlife as you kayak your way through mangrove tunnels. It’s such a cool experience!

Book it now: kayak tour through the mangroves.

10. Catch live music

I mean, with open containers and beachy vibes, you knew there was nightlife, right? Well this small island is mostly residential, vacation rentals and restaurants, but there are a few places to catch live entertainment.

Live music on Siesta Key:

  • The Hub Baja Grill
  • Gilligan’s Island Bar and Grill
  • Capt. Curt’s Crab and Oyster Bar
  • Daiquiri Deck
  • The Beach Club Siesta Key

11. Dessert for breakfast: specialty donuts

things to do in Siesta Key visiting Meaney's Donuts with cream and strawberry filling

If you have a sweet tooth, are a donut lover – or both, then this is the spot for you! Meaney’s Mini Donuts & Coffee House in the heart of Siesta Village is a must visit!

With flavors like strawberry cheesecake, apple pie, chocolate delight, peanut butter cup and bavarian cream, you really can’t go wrong!

The restaurant is just a walk-up and no matter when you go there’s likely going to be a line. It’s that good.

Get them to go and grab a seat at the village center. Meaney’s Mini Donuts is a local favorite and you’ll wish you had this gem back home.

Pro tip: you absolutely must get the cinnamon and sugar donut holes. Simple – but the best they offer.

12. Go parasailing (one of the most epic things to do in Siesta Key)

things to do in Siesta Key Florida with view of teal water and white sand photo from a drone

If you love extreme sports or high adrenaline activities, then parasailing is for you! My favorite part was floating a hundred feet above the water, you can practically see the whole island!

There’s several parasailing tours and spots to choose when in the area. You’ll depart from Sarasota or Anna Maria Island – and get gorgeous views of the Gulf!

Book it now: parasailing over the beach

13. Kids playground at Siesta Beach

what to do in Siesta Key with kids

Alright, back at the main beach, there’s quite a bit in the area. And if you’re traveling with kids, there’s a park right at the beach, awesome for young kids.

Partly shaded, the playground is perfect for a break from the beach or even on a cool day where you don’t want to spend time in the water. Siesta Key has so many things to do for the entire family – it really seems like there’s a bit of everything here!

Book a photo shoot: The best souvenir, booking a photo shoot while traveling preserves memories of your vacation! I love Flytographer because the photo sessions are fun, easy and affordable. you can get $25 off if you book through this link .

14. Lunch with a view

things to do in Siesta Key like eating lunch with a view with two tables yellow umbrellas overlooking Siesta Key Beach

And when the kids (or let’s be honest – the adults) get hungry from all that play, it’s time for some food with a view.

There’s a couple of restaurants right on the the main public beach complex at Siesta Key Beach. There are public restrooms and showers right there too.

On the northern end of the complex is a food kiosk with drinks. Towards the southern end is a second level restaurant, which has a great view of the beach and the Gulf of Mexico.

Fill up on snacks or lunch and then hit the beach! It’s truly one of the best ways to spend a day in Florida.

15. Kiteboarding

things to do in Siesta Key like kiteboarding with view of person on kiteboard on the water

Wondering what to do in Siesta Key? What about kiteboarding? One of the most popoular water sports in the area, actually.

I spent one windy afternoon on the beach, watching the kite boarders.  With shallow water and a beach as far as the eye can see, it’s perfect for kiteboarding !

Rent some gear, grab a guide and get ready for the experience of a lifetime!

16. Siesta Key drum circle

Ok, you’re going to love this one! Since 1996, every Sunday a group of musicians have gotten together to play music. What was once a locals thing has shaped into a locals and tourist event over the years.

Unfortunately, I haven’t spent a Sunday evening in Siesta Key so I haven’t been. But I hear it’s awesome! It’s on every Sunday, regardless of holidays or the weather. Check out their Facebook page for more updates.

The drum circle location is even on Google Maps, making it really easy to find! You’ll want to get there about 60-90 minutes before sunset to take part in the fun!

More things to do in Siesta Key

Well we’re over half way done with this mega list. Hopefully you’ve added a few Siesta Key attractions to your vacation plans. Let’s keep going. 🙂

17. Day trip to Anna Maria Island

view of entrance to beach with palm trees and umbrellas

When you’re in the area, you absolutely must visit Anna Maria Island. About 30 minute to an hour’s drive from Siesta Key is Anna Maria Island. It’s got a small-town vibe that’s simply different.

There’s quite a bit of things to do in Anna Maria Island , and more than enough to fill an entire day, including more beautiful beaches. So if you’ve got some time to explore, head north to the island!

A few of my favorites on Anna Maria Island include:

  • Hanging out at the beach on Bean Point
  • Grabbing lunch at Poppo’s Taqueria
  • Bradenton Beach and the Historic Bridge Street Pier

Pro tip: start your day early. Traffic in and out of Anna Maria Island can create quite the delay. Plus, you’ll want to find a parking spot for Bean Point early. 🙂

18. Shopping in the Village

store with items for souvenirs in Siesta Key Village

Back in Siesta Key Village, be sure to check out the best shopping spots. If you’ve left any beach gear at home, this is the place to find the replacement.

Grab a souvenir to remember your trip – or for a loved one. Find beachy or even bohemian style dresses, craft jewelry or ocean-inspired decor. There’s even an art gallery with pieces made by local artists.

If you love shopping while traveling, this is your spot!

19. Ice cream at the beach (one of my favorite Siesta Key activities)

hand holding ice cream cone with strawberry on top of chocolate best things to do in Siesta Key

Ice cream and vacation go together like peanut butter and jelly! You’ve got to take a beach break with ice cream. In the Siesta Key Village there’s a few places to grab a refreshing cool treat. And what’s more fun than ice cream?

Walking around the village, it’s easy to spot ice cream in just a couple minutes. But a favorite in Siesta Key is Big Olaf Creamery .

20. Dolphin tour Siesta Key

things to do in Siesta Key FL view of dolphin in water

What better time to see some wildlife and have an unforgettable experience than on vacation?

Well taking a boat out for half a day, watching for dolphins and seeing the local sights will be a highlight of your trip! Being on the beach is fun, but being on the water is an adventure all it’s own, too.

So take a boat tour to top off your fabulous vacation to this incredible part of Florida. If you go in the springtime, you may even see manatees, too!

Book it now: 1/2 day boat tour.

21. Turtle Beach

view of sandy coastline with some seaweed and people sitting on the sand

This hidden gem is a local’s favorite. It’s on the southern end of the island, and is the last stop for the island trolley. There’s a large park with an outdoor pavilion, plenty of picnic tables and of course, the beach!

Even though it’s just a few miles down the coast from Siesta Key Beach, the sand is more course, is darker in color and has more seaweed. Turtle Beach also has a more cliff-like shoreline, which makes for a great seat and fun to play in the sand.

So if you’re looking for a bit of isolation, choose Turtle Beach!

22. Snorkel at Point of Rocks

underwater world with fish and coral teal water

One of the best areas to snorkel in the entire region is the Point of Rocks, which is on the very south end of Siesta Key Beach . There’s a bunch of limestone formations which create unique marine life for the area.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler and have been to the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai or you’re new to snorkeling, this is a fun spot to explore for sure! The shallow waters and relatively calm waves here are perfect for snorkeling!

There’s not a lot of places to rent snorkel gear locally, so I’d recommend packing your own. This is the snorkel set I use and my kids love this gear for snorkeling.

Anyway, to get to the Point of Rocks, navigate to 6900 Point of Rocks Road and park at the Beach Access 12 parking lot.

23. World-famous sandwiches at Anna’s Deli

hand holding sandwich up close

You might be thinking…really? A sandwich on a list of things to do in Siesta Key? But yes, it made the list. It’s literally world famous!

Family owned since 1971, the signature ‘surfer sandwich’ which includes Anna’s famous sauce. In addition to the sauce, this place is known for their hefty portions, perfectly shaved meat and fresh baked marbled bread.

24. Sarasota sightseeing tour

aerial view of sarasota bridge

Alright so the last thing on this list of Siesta Key attractions is in the neighboring town of Sarasota. Because you’re likely spending so much of your time on the island, this is a fun alternative to see the Siesta Key area a bit more.

Get to know Sarasota’s colorful history with this sightseeing and food tour . From the Ringling Brothers history to the downtown area with the best restaurants, you’ll have such a good time in Sarasota.

Real quick: we all love the turquoise green water on Siesta Key Beach. But in recent years there’s been red tide, toxic algae blooms, seagrass die-offs and fish kills due to 150-year old decisions of water mismanagement in Florida.

Captains for Clean Water is trying to change that by providing education and funding for the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan , which restores Florida’s natural waterways, and reduce these toxic (not to mention unpleasant) extreme algae occurrences. Consider supporting this non-profit to ensure future trips to Siesta Key are enjoyable. (And bonus – they rate 80 by Charity Navigator , so give with confidence. 😊)

Why Siesta Key Is The Perfect Beach Vacation For The Entire Family

travel and leisure siesta key

  • Destinations
  • United States

Siesta Key, named one of the best beaches in Florida year after year, sits on the West Coast of Florida along the Gulf of Mexico. Twice it has been named the best beach in America. Siesta Key is minutes from Sarasota and Bradenton, where you can go for even more vacation offerings. I think you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips right here, though, on this gorgeous 8-mile-long island getaway with pristine beaches, plentiful outdoor attractions, great dining options, and fun for the entire family. Here are some things to consider for your family’s special visit.

Things To Do In Siesta Key

From shelling to sunbathing, kayaking to day drinking, fine dining to boating, you’ll have no shortage of fun offerings in Siesta Key. Savor succulent crab or the fresh catch-of-the-day as you watch stellar sunsets. Collect shells along the waterfront as you watch seagulls and pelicans pick out their lunch. Read a book nestled on a comfy blanket on the sandy beach or enjoy a leisurely bike ride. The list of enjoyable things to do in Siesta Key is as long as you’d want it to be.

Enjoy relaxing. I know this one is hard for some people, but merely lying on the beach or by the pool, reading a book, flipping through a magazine, listening to your favorite tunes, or taking a nap are all things you may want to consider on your Siesta Key vacation. Often, we need a reset and way to wind down, and lately, it seems a vacation is one way to make that happen.

Fresh seafood, tasty appetizers, craft beer, gourmet coffee and tea, and American cuisine are some of the delicious finds here at Siesta Key. Those who plan their vacations around the restaurants they want to try will have no shortage of tasty dining options at Siesta Key — and even accommodations for preparing a meal “at home.”

Spot Wildlife

Siesta Key features a gorgeous and still somewhat undiscovered natural setting, with shorebirds, egrets, herons, and dozens more. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and manatees, too.

Kayaking in Siesta Key, Florida.

Hit The Beach

Siesta Key is packed with beach activities, including snorkeling, Jet Skiing, and parasailing. Consider renting a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Point of Rocks Beach , a beautiful collection of smooth, flat limestone rocks, is perfect for fishing, bird-watching, and some of the best snorkeling on Florida’s Gulf Coast. I think it is best for pictures, too.

No matter which activities you choose, the stunning quartz (silica) sand will provide the backdrop and setting for your relaxing beach days. Crescent Beach is another beautiful part of Siesta Key and a totally different landscape. Keep in mind that the water of the Gulf is much warmer than that of the Atlantic Coast, making this a place where you can enjoy water activities year-round.

Take A Boat Ride

It is pretty simple to rent a boat for your family’s use while in Siesta Key. You can do so from Stickney Point Road. Whether you want to fish, see bottlenose dolphins, swim, ride around on a luxury catamaran, or enjoy the outdoors, the option is there. The cost at Siesta Key Watersports is $45 for the sunset sail, including free beer, wine, soda, and water. Marlin, snook, snapper, and grouper are a few things to dream about catching on your fishing adventures.

Enjoy Unique Freebies

There is no need to move your vehicle during your Siesta Key stay. Hop on the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley, which runs every 10 to 30 minutes. The route runs from Turtle Beach to Siesta Key Village, and it is entirely free. You can find the stops and more information here .

The second unique freebie is the amazing Siesta Key Drum Circle, a weekly Sunday event that has been in operation since 1996. The drummers begin around an hour before sunset and play enchanting drum beats that are great for relaxing, dancing, or just being in the moment. You can learn more about them on their Facebook page .

Breakfast from the Toasted Mango Cafe.

Best Restaurants In Siesta Key

The food in Siesta Key is quite memorable, and with each of my visits, I’ve had a few meals that are noteworthy and recommended.

Breakfast at Another Broken Egg Cafe is a Florida Southern favorite, with dishes ranging from cinnamon roll French toast and pumpkin waffles to mouthwatering crab cakes Benedict. My top pick is Toasted Mango Cafe , however. Both the Farmhouse Omelet and homemade corned beef hash and eggs are over-the-top-delicious.

Siesta Key has several tasty options for lunch. My recommendations are Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB) and the Lobster Pot . Both are located in the heart of downtown and have been staples in town for quite a few years. Go for a rich and flavorful lobster roll from the Lobster Pot. The watermelon salad with almonds, goat cheese, and berries is another attractive option. The grouper sandwich and gourmet burger are the local favorites from SKOB, which has a fabulous outdoor patio great for people-watching.

Hub Baja Grill in Siesta Key, Florida.

Two memorable dinner choices are Hub Baja Grill and Miguel’s.

Hub Baja Grill is a laid-back, festive beach-type bar with upscale food, a stellar downtown corner location, and fantastic live music. Try the Baja fish tacos or bronzed salmon (with truffle black bean puree and passion fruit beurre blanc sauce); both are excellent palate-pleasers.

Miguel’s is a fine-dining French restaurant at the opposite end of the island. The food is phenomenal, and the service impeccable. It is rare to find a French eatery in such a casual setting in Florida, so if you have a celebration or just want an outstanding meal, this restaurant is the place. Try the veal scaloppini or the incredible Chateaubriand. Save room for the cherries jubilee or Bananas Foster cooked tableside.

Lelu Coffee in Siesta Key, Florida.

Coffee, Drinks, And Sweets

Lelu Coffee has a funky surf-themed patio, a great coffee and tea selection, and an arsenal of martinis and cocktails. Pair your cold brew with a fluffy vegan cinnamon roll.

Big Olaf Creamery (opened in 1982) is the place for ice cream lovers, with nearly 40 flavors to choose from, plus soft-serve and Italian ice.

Another tasty option for handmade ice cream is Orange Octopus Ice Co. , with Ooey-Gooey Brownie, Kentucky Honey Bourbon, and Key Lime ice creams, to name a few.

Siesta Key Bungalows in Florida.

Best Places To Stay In Siesta Key

Siesta Key has a wide array of accommodations, from multifamily rental homes to unique bed and breakfasts, classic inns, and even campgrounds.

The Turtle Beach Resort and Inn features cottages with amazing waterfront views and an air of romance. Banyan Tree Resort is a second option for luxury lodging with condos and studio apartments with screened porches and patios. Pitch a tent and enjoy Siesta Key more ruggedly at the Turtle Beach Campground , offering tent and RV sites. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like another romantic option to me.

My top pick is Siesta Key Bungalows , a little piece of heaven at the opposite end of the island. There are 10 unique bungalows to choose from, but Ringling (a one-bedroom with a water view) is the one I loved best, with a full kitchen, queen-size double pillow-top bed, and chaise lounges overlooking the Heron Lagoon. Bikes, kayaks, and a heated pool are complimentary; you can fish off the dock.

What To Know Before You Go

You can reach Siesta Key from Sarasota, its neighboring city, or by driving a little more than an hour from Tampa, where an affordable flight is probably an option for those not driving.

About 6,500 people reside in Siesta Key, and nearly three million visit Sarasota County each year. During the off-season (June through November), you’ll experience far fewer crowds and still have favorable weather. The all-season activities, pleasant weather, and laid-back vibe make this one of the most sought-after Florida vacation spots. It is also tucked away, however, so you’ll avoid many who aren’t coming here specifically to visit. Siesta Key may not be the place to choose when looking for a budget vacation, since the rooms are pricey. Reservations are necessary, and you should make them early if possible.

Summers in Siesta Key are hot, with typical Florida temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees. Sunscreen is of the utmost importance, and you might consider bringing a hat. There are also rain showers, or sun showers, that don’t typically last long but can be a nuisance. The best times to visit are late February through May and in the late fall.

The address might say Sarasota , but don’t worry. This hotel is right next to Crescent Beach on Siesta Key. In fact, it’s one of the highest-rated beachfront hotels in Siesta Key Florida.

That high rating is for a good reason. Or rather, the rating is for many good reasons. The first, and perhaps most important, is the location. The Residences on Siesta Key Beach is right next to the sands. You’ll be able to step out of your room and onto Crescent Beach. A bit further, and you’ll be able to dive into the warm waters of the ocean.

As a guest, you’ll have access to a private area of the beach. There are beach chairs and loungers for you to use, though the sand is so soft you might not even want them.

You might not even make it to the beach, as the hotel is full of amenities. Try your hand at ping pong and shuffleboard in the gaming area or grill up some grub on one of the barbecues available.

Of the 150-plus reviews, one thing that stood out was how great the hotel was for couples. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in the US , this might be the perfect place. It is one of the best hotels at siesta key beach florida for sure.

For even more rest and relaxation, head to one of the various wellness facilities available at the Hyatt. Soak in the hot tub, exercise in the fitness room, or get pampered at the spa. If all that sounds like too much work, you can simply sit back and enjoy the sunshine on the sun terrace.

I have only been to Florida once but loved the bit I have seen and have wanted to go back explore of the state. Siesta Key looks like a great place to add to my next trip there. I especially like those Siesta Key Bungalows on the located on a canal, I think it is a bonus when it has a kitchen which is always good for a night in though Miguel’s French & Continental cuisine makes my mouth watering.

Wonderful! Glad to give you more places to consider. :) Siesta Key is a really great place and nearby Sarasota so you have another great city to visit for day trips.

Michael Hodgson

Miguel’s looks awesome ... though from the restaurant name I would be more inclined to jump to the incorrect conclusion that the cuisine was more Latin than French or Continental. Siesta Key sounds like a wonderful weekend escape and the beaches divine.

Michael, I thought the same thing! LOL French food was not what I would have figured. Thanks so much for reading. ;)

Wednesday 16th of January 2019

I did not know that quartz sand remains cool to the touch regardless of the temperature, I will have to dive into reading about it now! All the foods look delicious, but that breakfast is a killer (only, without avocado for me:)).

I love how well rounded Siesta Key is! We are hoping to make a trip to Florida in the near future, and beaches, food and a laid back atmosphere are what really draw us to places like this! It looks a perfect recipe to connect as a family while discovering somewhere new.

Awesome! Thanks so much for reading. ;)

Siesta Key looks like a great place to relax and unwind. I love beaches so I would definitely love to visit it someday. The beach is really beautiful and the food looks amazing too.

We are spilling our list highlighting some of the best things to do during your visit to Siesta Key Beach, Florida ; whether you are a beach bum seeking white sandy beaches or a foodie wanting to sample the best local cuisine, we have you covered.

Siesta Key Beach is perfect for a family beach vacation, romantic getaway, or friend’s retreat! With endless attractions, beautiful vacation rentals, and delicious restaurants, this barrier island sees many visitors return year after year.

Top beaches in the usa at Siesta Key

Before diving into the best things to do during your visit to Siesta Key, we need to cover a few essential things before you pack your suitcase. This page contains affiliate links.

A Guide To Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is a barrier island outside Sarasota, Florida, and it hugs the Gulf of Mexico, offering dazzling turquoise water alongside pristine beaches. Summer is the peak time for tourists as many families flock to the area to enjoy a well-deserved beach vacation, and I found that the summer months get too hot outside with lots of humidity.

When to Visit Siesta Key, Florida

The ideal time to visit Siesta Key is in April or May after the spring break crowds have left and before the peak summer tourism season arrives. The weather is warm, prices are more affordable, and attractions are less crowded.

The winter months are also a great time to visit, especially for those seeking respite from a harsh northern winter. If planning a visit during the late summer/ early, remember it is peak hurricane season. I recommend purchasing travel insurance or checking your rental agreement to see the procedures in the event of a hurricane.

How To Get To Siesta Key, Florida

Depending on where you are coming from, many visitors opt to fly. The nearest airport is Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). From the airport, the drive time is roughly 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Rental cars are available through a variety of different companies.

Tip:  Book your rental car in advance. When I say in advance, I mean when you buy your plane ticket or sooner, rental cars are a hot commodity these days, and you can get caught without one if you don’t plan.

Bringing your vehicle has many perks, especially when you don’t have to pay for airfare or rentals. Not to mention to can pack way more things without the fear of going overweight on your luggage. For those driving, the closest major highway is I-75 which will take you into Sarasota, and there is a gas station in Siesta Key Village.

Getting Around Siesta Key

Siesta breeze trolley.

The Siesta Key Area Trolley is regulated through the Sarasota County Area Transportation known as the “SKAT.” It is free for all riders. The Trolley operates seven days a week, including major holidays, between 10 am and 10 pm.

The Siesta Key Trolley transports passengers between Turtle Beach and Siesta Key Village in 30-minute intervals. There are three trolley stops at Siesta Key Village, Siesta Key Beach, and Turtle Beach.

Taxis are also available in the area.

Parking In Siesta Key

The best area for parking is the Siesta Key Public Beach Parking Lot. With nearly 200 parking spots, it is easier to find an available spot since people are always coming and going. However, I advise arriving early to ensure a parking spot and snag a good place at the beach.

There are also 12 public beach access lots with various parking spots available. Most of them are tiny, with only 25-30 spots.

There are metered lots throughout Siesta Key, so ensure to pay the meter if you park in one of these lots.

Where To Stay In Siesta Key, FL

Vacation rentals.

Many guests to Siesta Key often are on the hunt for a condo or vacation rental. There are tons of beautiful properties, houses, and condos available on Airbnb and Booking.com.  Siesta Key Beachside Villas  and  Tropical Breeze Resort  are popular rentals.

Budget Tip:  When booking on Airbnb or VRBO, check if a resort or property management company owns the unit you are looking for. Often it is cheaper to book directly through a company than on Airbnb. We have saved upwards of $500 by doing this.

Great Places To Visit In Siesta Beach Florida

Up and down the coast, Siesta Key has a variety of hotels ranging from full resorts to budget-friendly accommodations. Those not looking to stay on the beach but drive-in may find better options in Sarasota. A popular hotel is the  Hyatt Residence Club Sarasota .

Camping along the beach is a perfect way to spend a vacation and one of the most affordable. Turtle Beach Campground offers 39 campsites with full hookups. It is a lovely campground within steps to the beach, laundry facilities, picnic area, and WIFI.

Siesta Beach/Siesta Key Beach

Awarded #1 beach in the United States in 2020 by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards, visitors find it difficult to leave the sugary sand, turquoise waters, and soft waves coming in from the Gulf of Mexico. Siesta Beach is also known as Siesta Key Beach.

The Siesta Key Public Beach has a public parking lot, picnic areas, a beach-themed playground, bathrooms, and concessions. The Siesta Trolley makes a stop at the beach, making it easy to get to from anywhere on the island. The beach is also close to Siesta Key Village, which has plenty of restaurants and shops.

sandy white beaches at Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach

Roughly one mile south of Siesta Key Beach in beautiful Crescent Beach. The beaches are identical, except Crescent Beach has very little parking. Look for beach access #12. Crescent Beach seems more low-key, making it the ideal place for relaxation and families.

Turtle Beach

In the southern portion of the island is Turtle Beach . Known as a sea turtle nesting habitat, it is not uncommon to encounter loggerhead sea turtle nests. Nesting season runs from May to October, so all guests must remove any beach gear, umbrellas, chairs, etc., from the beach area. In addition, lights from nearby resorts and rentals must be dim enough that they can’t be seen from the beach.

Turtle Beach

The sand at Turtle Beach is slightly coarser than the other beaches found at Siesta Key. Paddleboarders and kayaks are frequent here, as the ocean is relatively calm and the wildlife in the area is abundant.

Turtle Beach is located off Midnight Pass Road at the south end of Siesta Key at 9000 Blind Pass Road. Turtle Beach Pier is also here!

Venture to the neighboring barrier island to catch the stunning sunset Lido Key Beach . A quick walk from St. Armond Circle will have you on the beach with your toes in the silky sand. The beach is large, offering plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the picturesque sunset.

Lido Beach

If you are visiting during the day, there is a hiking trail and foot showers at the public access points for Lido Key Beach. The beach does have public parking available.

Conservation Activity: Clean Up The Beach

During your next evening stroll along the beach, make a point to take a bag to pick up trash you stumble across. It was appalling the amount of garbage left behind.

We implemented this with our daughter during our nightly walks, discussing the importance of conservation. She took her new clean-up job seriously to protect the sea turtles and other wildlife in the area.

Fun Things To Do In Siesta Key

Siesta Key Drum Circles

Are you looking for the best live music experience? Every Sunday evening, roughly an hour before sunset, drum circles gather on three local beaches. It is an event that brings together people from all walks of life, as a diverse group forms a circle around the beating drums as if by magic.

Where To Catch The Drum Circles

  • The Siesta Key Drum Circle gathers on the public beach, to the left of the concession stand. 948 Beach Rd, Siesta Key, FL 34242
  • The Englewood Drum Circle can be found at 2100 North Beach Rd, Englewood, FL 34223.
  • Nokomis Drum Circle is located at 207 Casey Key Rd, Nokomis, FL 34275. This group gathers on Saturday and Wednesday evenings.

Anna Maria Island

A quick drive up the coast will leave guests in the small “Old Florida” beach town of Anna Maria. The quaint, picturesque town is only 7 miles long but offers plenty of fun in the sun. Spend the day at Manatee Beach, visit the Rod and Reel Pier, or shop along Pine Avenue.

Locals will warn you that once you visit, you may be booking your next Florida Vacation to Anna Maria Island!

Kayak In Jim Neville Marine Preserve

A great way to get up close with the natural wildlife in the area is by kayaking through the Jim Neville Marine Preserve. The shallow water is ideal for manatees, seabirds, and other local wildlife. Kayak rentals are available through Siesta Bike and Kayak.

Best Things To Do In Siesta Key On The Water

Rent jet skis.

Hop aboard your very own jet ski for a thrilling adventure. Jet skis can be rented in 1-4 hour time increments or all-day options depending on who you rent through. Most rentals come with gas, lifejackets, and wet suits.

Additional Water Sports

Siesta Key Watersports  and other water sports places offer additional attractions such as Dolphin Tours, Sunset Cruises, Fishing Charters, Sunset Tour, and Parasail rides. It’s always worth asking if they have a special or discount if you book more than one activity with them.

Parasail Siesta

Siesta Key Beach may be gorgeous from the beach level, but wait till you see it from up high! Kids as young as five years old can enjoy this adventure! Often the boat ride to and from the parasailing is just as enjoyable as the flight itself.

Parasailing in Siesta Key

Go Kayaking In Siesta Key

One of the most popular tours in Sarasota is the Guided Kayak Mangrove Tunnel Tour. The tour takes place off Lido Key, with guides taking you through Sarasota’s exotic mangrove tunnels and into Sarasota Bay. Frequently, guests will see manatees, dolphins, and other wildlife.

Go Snorkeling at Point of Rocks

One of the best snorkeling spots in Siesta Key is Point of Rocks at the southern end of Crescent Beach. It is a collection of limestone rocks formation that attracts a variety of sea life. To get there, you have to walk to the very end of Crescent Beach. You will have to walk alongside a barrier wall, which means you will have to get in the water (think waist high), walk along the wall a good minute until it ends at a small secluded beach.

In all honestly, it looks like a private beach, but I didn’t see a sign. However, there are plenty of tourists visiting. It is a great place to collect shells, sea life, and schools of fish.

Find The Best Place To Get Ice Cream

While I am happy to give two excellent recommendations of excellent ice cream stops in Siesta Key, a personal mission is to try as many a possible. Depending on the length of your stay, have a hunt for the unique flavor, best vanilla, or sundae!

Grab Ice Cream At The Orange Octopus

Get a scoop of handmade slow-churned on-site ice cream at the Orange Octopus. They offer a wide variety of unique flavors such as Kentucky Honey Bourbon, Ooey Gooey Brownie, and More! Milkshakes, sorbet, and coffees are also available.

Orange Octopus Ice Cream in Siesta Key

Big Olaf Creamery

The locals guided us to Big Olaf Creamery for the best ice cream in Sarasota. Located in St. Armands Circle, we found ourselves indulging in delicious creamy cones that were the envy of those passing by. Keep in mind that Big Olaf’s is a  cash-only  establishment.

Spend Time At Siesta Village

A short walk from Siesta Key Beach is the Siesta Village. Stroll through the village to find plenty of great things to do, from restaurants to boutiques. The local post office, a supermarket, gas station, and beauty salons can be found at Siesta Village.

The Best Restaurants At Siesta Key Village

Travel Planning Tip : Some of the restaurants do take reservations. I highly recommend making them weeks in advance to ensure you get a table when you want.

The Cottage

Whether you are looking for fresh seafood or a juicy hamburger, The Cottage at Siesta Key Village is one of our favorite hangouts. A lush patio makes the ideal spot for sipping on their signature sangrias while the sound of live music floats through the air.

The Cottage Lobster Rolls

While everything on the menu is extraordinary, we highly recommend the New England Lobster Roll, The Grouper Sandwich, and the Billionaire Burger. They also offer a kids menu; my daughter says to get the burger! It’s the best she has ever had!

Best places to eat in Siesta Key: The Cottage

The Hub Baja Grill

The scene at the Hub is a lively one with a patio full of colorful umbrellas, margaritas alongside delicious Baja cuisine. Munch on chips and salsa while the live music entertains. Then choose an entree from endless tasty options. Finish off your meal with an order of delectable churros.

Siesta Key Oyster Bar

Loving known as the “SKOB” by locals, this Oyster Bar serves up upscale pub favorites such as wings and burgers alongside fresh oysters. Handcrafted cocktails and an incredible Sunday Brunch paired with an island vibe make the SKOB a must during your visit to Siesta Key.

Siesta Key Oyster Bar

Daiquiri Deck

If you are on the hunt for a fun spot to grab a drink, the Daiquiri Deck is the place. We opted not to eat here; however, many people had good things to say, and the food we saw coming out looked good. They have lots of seafood options along with oysters.

There are two Daiquiri Deck locations in Siesta Key. One in the Siesta Key village and the other in the South Village. You will find additional locations in St. Armands, Venice, and Anna Maria.

Siesta Key Farmers Market

Support local by paying a visit to the Siesta Key Farmers Market. The Farmer’s Market occurs every Sunday from 8:00 am-12:00 pm at 5104 Ocean Blvd in Siesta Key Village.

Venture Into Downtown Sarasota

Downtown Sarasota is beautifully situated on Sarasota Bay, offering a colorful, upbeat scene of eateries, theaters, shopping boutiques, and artist enclaves. Catch a performance at the Sarasota Opera, stroll through one of the many art galleries or take the kids to play at a circus-themed playground.

Payne Park In Sarasota

Payne Circus Park in Sarasota

Owen’s Fish Camp

For some of the freshest seafood on the west coast of Florida, pay a visit to Owen’s Fish Camp. The vibe is hard to beat. Feeling as you have been transported into the bayou, bluegrass music fills the air, while the smell of roasting oysters makes your mouth water. The old tire swing, fishing gear, and ambiance feel like you have entered an old fishing shanty.

Owens Fish Camp

The food was incredible and fresh. Once again, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We ordered the catch of the day, which was superb.

TIP:  Owen’s Fish Camp does not take reservations. Be prepared to wait or arrive when they first open. We came at 4:30 pm on a Thursday, and the wait was already at 20-30 minutes.

Siam Gulf Sarasota

Sushi is king at Siam Gulf in Sarsota. Tucked away in a strip mall this trendy restaurant has all the Japanese and Thai vibes. Indulge in a scrumbcious Pad Thai or enjoy rolls of fresh sushi made to order.

Mote Marine and Laboratory

Marvel at sharks, sea turtles, manatees, and endless undersea curiosities. One remarkable thing about  Mote  is it is more than an Aquarium; and it is a real laboratory where actual scientific research happens. There is an abundance of hands-on exhibits, educational displays, and special presentations with a focus on learning.

Keep in mind Mote has multiple buildings that you get admission into with your ticket to see all types of marine life. Follow the paths or ask an employee who is always willing to help get you to where you want to go.

Check out our guide of  things to do in Sarasota With Kids   for more great ideas.

St. Armond’s Circle

About a five-minute drive from Mote Aquarium is St. Armands Circle. This plaza is full of shops, restaurants, and spas. We recommend parking closer to nearby Lido Key beach so that you can easily walk between the two.

St. Armands Circle is known for its unique luxury shopping experiences, but they also have plenty of shops to grab that perfect Sarasota souvenir. Family-friendly restaurants and places to grab a sweet treat can also be found throughout St. Armands Circle. We grabbed a box of macarons from Le Macaron French Pastries.

The Columbia

Dine at the oldest restaurant in Sarasota that the same family has owned since they opened in 1959. While the original restaurant can be found in Tampa, which opened in 1905, this Florida staple serves up traditional Spanish dishes. Start your dinner out with the Original “1905” Martini or one of their famous sangrias. Sample a variety of their tapas or select one of their many delectable entrees.

Best Things to Do

Best shopping, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, islands to visit, how to get around.

Allard Schager/Getty Images

The Florida Keys are like a coral kingdom: a 125-mile chain of islands flung south from the tip of Florida with the ultimate island — Key West — resting just 90 miles from the shores of Cuba. And with one narrow road (and 42 bridges) connecting the isles, just to travel the Florida Keys is to feel on a magical, water-surrounded journey.

“There are a variety of reasons to choose the destination, including a wide range of accommodations to meet every style; fresh, local cuisine with a Caribbean flair; water-based activities like sailing and kayaking or paddleboarding; and the best part is access to a world of adventure and romance without needing a passport,” Stacey Mitchell, director of the Florida Keys & Key West tourism board , told Travel + Leisure . She noted that a trip to the Florida Keys “rivals even the most popular island destinations.”

While it's possible to hop in a car in Miami and make it to Key West (and the southernmost point in the continental United States) in less than four hours (traffic willing), that defeats the charm and richness of the Florida Keys. Every few miles there's a discovery to be had : a tiki bar, a seafood joint, a beachy resort or boutique hotel, a gorgeous nature preserve, or just a thrilling turquoise vista across the famed saltwater flats toward a blue horizon.

So, make a trip of it — spend a few days in Key Largo or Islamorada near the upper end of the archipelago, dally on Marathon or Big Pine Key, and then settle in for some serious quirky culture, history, and bohemia in Key West. Take time to snorkel, dive, and fish, walk the beach, and eat lots and lots of seafood and Key lime pie. And don't worry if you don't get to everything that there is to love and explore in the Florida Keys — you'll be back.

To help guide you on your journey, Mitchell recommended “the Florida Keys and Key West travel app which has several great suggestions for places to stop along the Overseas Highway and also gives a guided historical overview.”

Best Hotels & Resorts

The Bungalows Key Largo: A former trailer park on a stunning stretch of shoreline with a sandy beach has been converted to a lush enclave of small cottages with big luxuries, including private verandas with plunge tubs and outdoor showers. At The Bungalows , there are six restaurants and bars on the property — including a toes-in-the-sand Mexican cantina and a savvy bar with a Hemingway vibe — and a top-notch spa. A panoply of water activities including catamaran excursions make it easy to stay put. Adults only, all-inclusive, and all just 63 miles from Miami International Airport.

The Moorings Village: This former coconut plantation re-emerged in the 1960s as a small resort. Today, its aqua-shuttered estate house and sugary stretch of white sand — famously peppered with a grove of listing palms — are straight-up cinematic, and its collection of luxury cottages make for an Old Florida idyll.

Isla Bella Beach Resort: This luxury resort on Marathon Key is a game-changer, with ocean views from every room and suite and a high-design feel. The property is set on a mile-long stretch of private beach and surrounded by more than a thousand palms. Five pools, exceptional dining, and an open-air bar with a killer sunset view complete the fantasy.

Big Pine and Lower Keys

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa: The only private island resort in the United States is hidden away in the Lower Keys. The adults-only enclave is accessible by boat and seaplane and features just 30 thatched-roof bungalows with updated interiors (including floor-to-ceiling glass doors and outdoor copper soaking tubs). To round out the offerings there is a world-class spa with a two-story atrium, private poolside cabanas, and some of the best cuisine in the Keys.

Parrot Key Hotel & Villas: Parrot Key Hotel & Villas may be the ultimate Key West hideaway. The property is hidden off a main drag and completely enveloped in five acres of tropical greenery with four swimming pools and a stretch of beach. The feel here is serene and sophisticated, but without airs.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park: This state park is a must for snorkelers and divers alike (and if you don't swim, there are always the glass-bottom boat tours ). The park’s 70 nautical square miles form the first undersea park in the U.S. and while the upland areas sport mangrove swamps and tropical hammocks, it's the coral reefs that are worth suiting up for (and don't forget, the waters of the Keys are always warm, even in the depths of winter). Join a snorkeling or scuba tour or rent a kayak, paddleboard, or canoe.

Turtle Hospital: Leave the old-school petting aquariums behind and fall in love with the residents in rehabilitation here at the first state-licensed veterinary hospital devoted solely to the treatment of endangered sea turtles in the world. The tours are excellent and well worth booking in advance.

Big Pine Key

National Key Deer Refuge: They're tiny, adorable, and unique to the Florida Keys. And now these miniature Key deer are protected, having been saved from the brink of extinction. Start at the visitor and nature center for more on the Key deer, including where to see one and how to explore the refuge's preserved forest, tropical hardwood hammocks, freshwater and salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests.

Honest Eco Sustainable Nature Tours: Key West is full of cruise charters, but this progressive tour company is head and shoulders above the rest for its commitment to sustainability and environmental education. Owned and operated by biologist Billy Litmer, Honest Eco operates out of the Historic Seaport and features SQUID, Key West's first electric power charter boat. Schedule a dolphin watch and snorkel or an “All the Above” trip, which also includes kayaking and organic vegetarian lunch.

Key West Pro Guides: Ready to live that sportfishing dream? The team at Key West Pro Guides can help even a fishing novice get the Hemingway experience on the water — and they're ready to help experts land that trophy fish. “Without a doubt when someone comes to the Florida Keys for the first time, they should get out on the water whether it’s via a fishing charter or snorkel excursion,” said Mitchell.

NANCY PAUWELS/Getty Images

Shell World: Kitschy and over the top, this is a classic Florida Keys tourist stop , but it's truly worth it. Take in the splendor, pick up a souvenir, and know that you're part of a great tradition of roadside attractions.

Village Square at the Trading Post: A charming collection of pastel cottages is home to an equally charming collection of shopping and snacking: You'll find some beachy boho fashion, home décor, plants and other botanicals, art, burritos, and coffee.

Books & Books: This lovely indie bookstore — and nonprofit and community center for readers and writers — was co-founded by beloved author (and Key West resident) Judy Blume and is ground zero for Key West's literary scene.

Gallery on Greene: For collectors and oglers, Nance Frank's gallery with a deep bench of Key West artists (including a stellar roster of Cuban artists) is a must-visit.

KINO Sandals: It's rare that a souvenir is truly a local favorite as well, but you won't find a Conch (Key Wester) who doesn't have a perfectly broken-in pair of these leather sandals. Hit the landmark shop founded by Cuban immigrant Roberto "Kino" Lopez in 1966 and gape at the 17 designs and myriad shades (you can also watch them being made).

Key Largo Conch House: Let this family-owned institution be your introduction to the conch fritter, a Florida Keys specialty. And if you're in a breakfast mood, tuck into a stack of Key lime pancakes. The Conch House was one of the first restaurants recommended by Mitchell, who noted that the spot is a local favorite.

Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar: It's all about catching the sunset and some live music at this toes-in-the-sand favorite , reveling in local delicacies like the house-smoked fish dip and Key lime peppercorn snapper. The "Frozen" Key Lime Pie on the dessert menu is renowned.

Keys Fisheries: There's nothing better than a seafood dive that’s next door to one of the coast's largest fish exporters, and this salty classic is pure Keys fun (get the stone crabs when they're in season). The Lobster Reuben and Key lime pie are famous (and rightly so), so bring your appetite.

South of the Seven: If you're wondering, the name means you're south of the Seven Mile Bridge that marks the Lower Keys. Feel like an insider? Now it's time to celebrate with big picture window views of the water and the Mediterranean-inspired menu in this go-to spot inside the landmark Sugarloaf Lodge. Mitchell calls South of the Seven one of the Keys’ “off-the-beaten-path hidden gems.”

Blue Heaven: With its dense foliage and quirky décor, this Key West landmark is the bohemian hangout of choice, whether hitting the little stand-up bar for happy hour or taking a table for a whole blissful brunch, lunch, or dinner. Yes, the rooms upstairs were once a bordello, and yes, Hemingway refereed boxing matches here, and yes, the Key lime pie is the tallest (and most delicious) you've ever seen.

The climate in the Florida Keys is subtropical, and the proximity to the Gulf Stream and Gulf of Mexico means that the average summer and winter temperatures rarely differ more than 10 degrees. The result is a year-round paradise — except for hurricane season which typically starts in early June and ends in late November.

“The winter and spring seasons are among the best times to visit as the weather is cooler and the water temperatures are delightful,” said Mitchell, who noted that “even when the weather is hottest in South Florida, the air in the Keys is still a few degrees cooler.”

Most tourists visit between late December and May. During this time it almost never rains, and even if clouds do push through with some showers, they're gone that day.

Most out-of-state travelers get to the Keys by flying into Miami International Airport (MIA) and then hopping in a Florida Key-bound shuttle or taxi. But, the Keys are also home to two international airports of their own: Key West International Airport (EYW) and Florida Keys/Marathon International Airport (MTH).

It’s worth checking all three airports when pricing out your flights.

bpperry/Getty Images

The Keys are divided into five regions: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine and Lower Keys, and Key West.

Key Largo: This island is known as “the dive capital of the world” and is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater preserve in the U.S.

Islamorada: Islamorada is famous for its backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly fishing. The Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon is one of the longest segmented bridges in the world.

Big Pine and Lower Keys: Big Pine Key is home to a national refuge that protects the miniature endangered Key deer, which has made an astonishing comeback from near extinction.

Key West: This island is famous for the writers who once lived there — most notably, Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams — and the warm and welcoming LGBTQIA+ scene. Key West is closer to Cuba (90 miles) than it is to Miami (159 miles) and is home to a vibrant historic district, an international airport, and marks the southernmost point in the continental United States.

aiisha5/Getty Images

Renting a car in the Key can be convenient — until it’s not. Traffic and hard-to-find parking are two very real factors to consider. If you can avoid renting a car, you should. Here’s how:

Shuttles: Keys Shuttle and Florida Keys Express Shuttle offer door-to-door shuttle services to the Keys from Miami International Airport.

Bus: The Greyhound Keys Shuttle connects various stations in Miami with the Keys — all the way down to Key West. On Key West, the Duvall Loop is a free bus service with 18 stops in Old Town.

Taxis: Local cab companies generally service their island area — inquire locally for taxis. A cab stand services passengers arriving at Key West International Airport (EYW) and Freebee in Islamorada has a fleet of on-call electric vehicles.

Ridesharing: Uber and Lyft both operate in the Florida Keys.

The highlight of Day 2 of your Siesta Key family vacation is spending the day at the world-famous Siesta Key Beach !

Siesta Key Beach, also known as Siesta Beach, is the most popular beach in Siesta Key, Florida.

Likewise, it was rated the #1 beach in America by TripAdvisor users in 2015, 2017, and 2020.

The sugary-white sand and turquoise waters found here are literally out-of-this-world amazing – and is what draws families and vacation-goers here year after year.

The full line-up of amenities offered at  Siesta Key Public Beach  includes:

  • First aid center with lifeguards on duty year-round
  • Public restrooms and showers
  • 800 car public parking lot
  • Full-service snack bar and gift shop
  • Picnic areas with and without cover
  • Gazebos and shelters that can accommodate 60-120 people.

Families can also enjoy all the following sporting activities at Siesta Key Beach:

  • Playground equipment
  • A tennis court complex
  • Volleyball court
  • A 20-station fitness trail

Additional planning tip: Siesta Key Beach is located 2 hours south of Disney World in case you’re wondering about the closest beaches to Orlando .

Sunset Point

Another one of the most popular things to do on the island of Siesta Key is to watch the sunset!

Since the island of Siesta Key faces West out into the Gulf of Mexico, you’re always guaranteed a front-row seat to watch the sun sink below the horizon.

Though there are many places to catch a sunset on Siesta Key, the best lookout point is Sunset Point .

Located at the north end of Siesta Key Public Beach, this jut of land offers one of the best views of the magnificently lit evening skies.

Though you can see gorgeous sunsets anywhere along Crescent and Siesta Key Beach, Sunset Point is a fun gathering spot where many other tourists come together each evening.

In fact, you may find yourself returning here every night of your Siesta Key family vacation!

Additional planning tip:  Keep a close eye out, for there’s a possibility that you’ll catch a rare sight known as a  “green flash” . The green flash is a quick spot of green seen at the top of the sinking sun.

  • Get freshened up and head into Siesta Key Village for dinner and drinks on the patio at The Hub Baja Grill .

Siesta Key Water Rentals

Day 3 of this Siesta Key family vacation itinerary involves getting out to enjoy and explore the Gulf of Mexico via watersport rentals.

Popular watersport activities in Siesta Key include kayaking, parasailing, jet-skiing, and boating.

No need to look too far, because Siesta Key is home to several watersport outfitters that have ample equipment and guides to make for the perfect ocean outing!

Siesta Key Family Vacation: Day 4

  • Enjoy breakfast and coffee at Another Broken Egg restaurant.
  • Relax on Crescent Beach and go snorkeling at Point of Rocks .
  • Return to your beachside accommodations to freshen up.
  • Rent an electric scooter or scooter car from Ride & Paddle and cruise around the island.
  • Have dinner at the Lobster Pot Restaurant .
  • End the day with drinks and live music on the Daiquiri Deck in Siesta Key Village.

Crescent Beach at Siesta Key

After dinings at Siesta Key’s most popular breakfast hang out, Another Broken Egg , and get ready for an ultra-relaxing day by heading to Crescent Beach .

Crescent Beach is the most private, non-private beach in Siesta Key and is quieter and more secluded than its counterpart, Siesta Key Beach.

This part of Siesta Key is an enclave where the beach is densely lined with condos, villas, and vacation rentals that provide direct access to the waterfront.

Midnight Pass Road provides the only (easy to miss) public access to enter Crescent Beach. From there, there’s a 25-space parking lot and walking pathway that leads out onto the beach.

Though it doesn’t have the same amenities as Siesta Beach, you can still go shelling, build sandcastles, and enjoy the ocean with a bit more privacy.

In addition, Siesta Key’s diving and snorkeling hotspot called  Point of Rocks  is located at the southern tip of Crescent Beach. This is where you’ll spend the next hour or so during this itinerary.

Top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan, features their full 6-day itinerary for the perfect Siesta Key Family Vacation!

Siesta Key’s Point of Rocks

Though a bit difficult to get to, the  Point of Rocks  is known as the best place to snorkel in Siesta Key. It is also one of the best family activities in Siesta Key.

The easiest way to find  Point of Rocks  is to walk to the southernmost end of Crescent Beach until you reach a gigantic sea wall. You must then climb along the sea wall, turn a corner, and walk down 3 steps into the water.

By now you will see the amazing tide pools and snorkeling area complete with an array of gigantic moss-covered rocks that protrude from the ocean.

The water is no more than 5 feet deep here, and there is a vast amount of marine life that includes fish, crabs, and red sponges.

The shallow water makes this a perfect place for kids/beginners to snorkel with a basic retail store snorkeling set.

There are also large distributions of seashells, making this a perfect spot for shell picking.

Additional planning tips:  Wear water shoes when visiting Point of Rocks as the terrain is made up of crushed shells and coral. Also, the rocks can get quite slippery.

There are only 10 – 12 parking spots at the alley access for Point of Rocks. This is why it is best to park at Crescent Beach and walk from there.

Siesta Key Family Vacation: Day 5

  • Get coffee and crepes at Bonjour’ French Cafe .
  • Take a 2-hour Dolphin and Sea Life Tour from Siesta Key Marina .
  • Drive 15 miles South to visit the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” , Venice Beach, Florida .

Siesta Key Dolphin Cruise

Start the day off with delicious croissants, homemade crepes, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and specialty coffees at Siesta Key Village’s Boujour French Cafe !

Next, spend the morning of Day 5 taking an unforgettable guided dolphin cruise!

By far one of the best things to do in Siesta Key is to watch dolphins jump and play in their natural environment on a  guided dolphin cruise !

Siesta Key waters are home to one of the largest populations of wild bottlenose dolphins. Seeing dolphins in their natural habitat is both thrilling and serene, as well as something that you will never forget.

The beauty of taking a guided dolphin cruise is that the captain of the boat knows where to find them and will provide you with a relaxing experience to get a first-hand view.

Siesta Key dolphin cruises vary in length, time of day, and overall experience.

Venice Beach

We absolutely loved our afternoon trip to Venice Beach in Venice Beach, FL! This is why we recommend that you include a stop here in your Siesta Key family vacation!

Venice Beach is unique in that it has a high density of fossilized shark teeth that can be found ashore. There are also many opportunities to see wild dolphins here.

In addition, the beaches along Venice are home to a large number of marine turtle nests. These can be found between the months of May and October.

Last, the perfect place to enjoy appetizers, dinner, and a drink is at the tourist hotspot, Sharky’s on the Pier !

Sharky’s is located right on Venice Beach with direct views of both the beach and fishing pier. There is indoor and outdoor seating, a gift shop, and a laid-back tropical vibe.

Additional planning tip: Visit here to learn more about where and how to find shark teeth in Venice .

Additional planning tip: If you’re ever back in the area, you can grab our complete 6-day Sarasota vacation itinerary here!

Siesta Key Family Vacation: Getting There

Siesta Key is an 8-mile barrier island. The island is 11 miles (a 20-minute drive) from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and 71 miles (a 90-minute drive) from Tampa International Airport.

All major rental car companies are available at both airports. Taxis and ride-hail companies such as Uber and Lyft are available as well.

Top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan, features their full 6-day Siesta Key Itinerary!

How to Get Around

In order to lighten the traffic on Siesta Key and save you the hassle of having to find a parking spot, Siesta Key offers several  free transportation  and rideshare options once you are on the island.

The  Siesta Breeze Trolley  (pictured above) offers  free  round-trip service from Siesta Key Village to the southernmost part of the island, with many stops along the way.

Likewise,  Jonny’s Original Free Beach Rides  operates a fleet of electric vehicles. They seat six and can transport your gear like beach chairs, coolers, and shopping items.

Other free, convenient, and eco-friendly transportation options include  Siesta Key Free Ride  and  Siesta Key Frog Hop !

Additional planning tip:  Some of these options require you to call and reserve a pickup time.

Also, though they are free to ride, these companies are all greatly appreciative and reliant on tips.

Where to Stay When Visiting Siesta Key

Because all of Siesta Key’s beaches and attractions are relatively close to one another, you can choose to stay in one place for the entire duration of your trip to Siesta Key.

There are several beachfront resorts to choose from that range in price and amenities.

Our favorites, which are all highly rated, include the Sarasota Surf & Racquet Club (complete with full kitchens!), Tropical Breeze Resort , Hyatt Residence Club Siesta Key Beach , and Tropical Beach Resorts .

Check out their outdoor pools and the walking distance to the beach, as well as if they have a hot tub, picnic area, barbeque grills, and other family-friendly amenities.

Compare prices and locations here:

For more options, consider staying in nearby Sarasota which is only a short drive away.

Though it is about a 20- minute drive from Sarasota to Siesta Key, you may find more options that suit your family’s needs. (Keep in mind that traffic congestion in Downtown Sarasota can also be an issue.)

Friends have recommended Lido Beach Resort , as well as Embassy Suites by Hilton Sarasota if you don’t necessarily need to stay oceanfront.
