Previously On The Journey

The Journey, which debuted in FIFA 17, was the first of its kind, the first FIFA story mode that focused on a single character’s career, powered by both user choice and actual match gameplay. Thanks to powerfully-rendered cinematics from the Frostbite engine, players could experience Alex Hunter’s story firsthand. The story continued in FIFA 18 with The Journey: Hunter Returns, and is about to reach its dramatic conclusion in FIFA 19 with The Journey: Champions.

Our Story Begins (The Journey)

We are introduced to Alex as he competes as a young lad for his U-11 squad in London’s Clapham Common. As the scene unfolds, we also meet many of the other members of The Journey cast: Alex’s childhood best friend Gareth Walker, his mother Catherine, father Harold, and grandfather Jim. After a dramatic penalty shootout, the story jumps ahead seven years to an “exit trial” at the National Football Academy in which both Alex and Gareth compete to impress Premier League scouts. This is where Alex meets Danny Williams, another promising player competing in the exit trials who gives Alex a hard time throughout the event. After Alex completes the exit trial, he is approached by football agent Michael Taylor and eventually hires him to be his first agent. Michael gets Alex a professional contract with the Premier League club of his choice, and we later find out that Gareth also signed for the same club. The two young players attend preseason in the United States together, but Alex only plays for the club for a brief time when he finds out that the club has signed a superstar—which means that he’s going on loan to a Championship club. As soon as Alex arrives at his new club, he runs into an old “friend”—Danny Williams. Alex impresses on loan alongside Danny as the two develop a close partnership (and friendship), but he gets a sudden recall to his parent club in the middle of the season. We find out that this was due to Gareth’s leaving of the club—for their biggest rival—and Alex is meant to fill his old friend’s boots. Solid performances upon his return to the club earn Alex a spot in the starting XI in the FA Cup final against their biggest rivals—and his old pal Gareth. Despite a fairly tense conversation before the match in which Gareth goes a bit too far, the two briefly reconcile on the pitch afterwards—regardless of who wins the match. The Journey wraps up with Alex and Danny playing FIFA when Alex finds out that he’s been placed on a shortlist of players likely to get a call-up to the England national team in the near future.

Alex's First Big Move (The Journey: Hunter Returns)

Now that he has re-established himself with his Premier League club, Alex heads to preseason in the United States to take on the likes of Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy. At the end of his time in Los Angeles, Alex runs into his estranged father Harold, who lives in the United States and wants to reconnect. After the club returns to England, Michael Taylor contacts Alex to tell him that Real Madrid want to buy him. Fresh off facing Real in the USA and meeting Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex pushes for this dream move by handing in a transfer request. The entire deal turns out to be fake and falls through, ruining Alex’s reputation with the club and its fans. With few options left and the window closing soon, Alex chooses to transfer to the LA Galaxy after Harold calls him and helps initiate a move. Alex regains his form and confidence in MLS, helping the Galaxy reach the Playoffs (and maybe more). He also meets Kim Hunter, his half-sister that Harold had never told him about. Although he originally wanted nothing to do with Kim, Alex puts the grudge against his father aside and supports his half-sister as she earns her first call-up to the US Women’s National Team. Alex’s impressive run in MLS gets the football world buzzing, and he is courted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe in the offseason. After he makes his decision and has a promising start with his new team, Alex gets a serious knee injury that keeps him out of action for months. The club ends up sending Alex to Los Angeles for rehabilitation, which gives him another chance to bond (and eventually train with) Kim. Once he is fully cleared by the doctors, Alex goes back to Europe to re-join his club for the remainder of the season. He impresses with some solid performances to close out the season, followed by a celebratory return to Los Angeles with his grandfather Jim. After an emotional first meeting between Jim and Kim, Alex gets a call from an agent that represents some of his teammates. She requests a meeting, telling him that if he were her client he would “be a Real Madrid player right now.” Learn more about the upcoming finale to the story, The Journey: Champions in FIFA 19. For the first time in the series, you can play the complete stories of Alex, Danny, and Kim as they strive to take their careers to a new level. -Spenser Davis

In keeping with last year's positive changes though, you'll also be guiding Alex's half-sister Kim and long-time friend Danny to respective glory, too.

In this FIFA 19 The Journey: Champions walkthrough then, we'll guide you through every step of this year's story mode, from the first kick-off to the very final whistle.

We'll cover every narrative development, map out your objectives , decisions and rewards , and give you all the advice you'll need to round out The Journey saga and the Hunters' stories in style.

What you need to know about the journey: champions - rewards, progression and stats, other advice you should know before playing the journey: champions in fifa 19.

This year's instalment of The Journey is broken into just four chapters, plus a brief Prologue. Below you'll find our walkthrough for each step of the story:

  • FIFA 19 The Journey: Champions Chapter One - Rising Stars and prologue
  • FIFA 19 The Journey: Champions Chapter Two - Pressure's Favour
  • FIFA 19 The Journey: Champions Chapter Three - Collision Course
  • FIFA 19 The Journey: Champions Chapter Four - Eclipse

Alongside these chapter-specific pages, read on for a more general round-up of what The Journey entails and a few general tips to get you started.

the journey fifa

Let's start with the basics of what you need to know about The Journey, and how it all works.

  • What do you do in The Journey? - The Journey: Champions follows the final instalment in the saga of Alex Hunter, his half-sister Kim Hunter and Alex's long-time friend and rival, Danny Williams. You'll play as all three characters throughout the story, playing matches, choosing dialogue in cutscenes and unlocking rewards for completing certain objectives.
  • Can I import sava data from previous instalments in The Journey? - Yes, you can. In fact, the game will read save data from FIFA 17, so you bring the Alex Hunter you've shaped and customised from the previous two games into this one. So he'll roughly have the same stats when you start The Journey: Champions. Conversely, you can start this story without having played the others. The game will instead make previous choices for you and make reference to past events during the game.
  • Do Alex, Kim and Danny improve over time? - Yes, the overall (OVR) attributes of each individual Hero will gradually increase as you play more matches and complete training drills. The better you play, and the more objectives you meet, the more your Heroes improve. Unlocking Skill Traits will also enable you to enhance certain aspects of a respective Hero's game, so you use them smartly.
  • Which clubs can you play this time around? - You'll play for the Women's World Cup squad with Kim. You'll also have a choice of most Premiere League clubs as Danny (or the one you used in the previous game if you're important previous data). Same goes for Alex, but if you're new you can pick from PSG, Atletico Madrid or Bayern Munich. Alex will also go on to play for another big European club...

the journey fifa

  • How much do Key Decisions and dialogue choices affect The Journey? - Dialogue choices are relatively unimportant as they simply make your Hero seem likeable or arrogant, but these choices rarely have an impact on your actual progress as a pro footballer. Key Decisions can have a bigger effect on the flow of the story, but in the end, all that really matters is your Manager Rating (which will influence if you make the Starting XI) and your Followers count (which can help you unlock new items to customise your hero with).
  • Do I need to complete all objectives to finish the story? - No, you can miss some out and still make it to the end of The Journey: Champions without too much trouble. These objectives are more a way of extending the experience by getting you to complete certain tasks along the way (get X player over Y rating, complete Z number of drills, etc). These, in turn, unlock bonuses such as Skill Moves traits and boosts for your Follower count. So while not vital, these objectives are well worth completing.
  • Will I still get the main rewards for each chapter? - Each chapter has a unique set of rewards outside of the objectives. Some are hidden, while others simply require you to finish the chapter itself. These are often unique items or special cards for use in Ultimate Team.

While The Journey instalment in FIFA 19 roughly follows the same template as the previous two games, there have been a few changes along the way. The following is an extra set of things you'll need to know to get the most out of your time with this football-loving story mode.

  • Where you can, always opt to play as the Hero when playing a match. It's technically 'easier' to play as a team, as you have full agency over the entire Starting XI, but your main concern is improving your Manager Rating for that match so keep playing as your respective hero. It takes a little getting used to, but it's worth it for the benefits of a better Manager Rating.
  • When playing just as Alex, Kim or Danny, you can also give AI teammates instructions to set you up with a through pass, chip the ball to you and so on. It's an odd system to master, especially when you're trying to up your rating by chasing assists and goals, but once you've cracked it, you can use friendly AI to set you up on every offensive push.

the journey fifa

  • Don't rely on stamina every time you move. While each chunk of stamina you use will partially regenerate, your bar is gradually reducing over the course of the match. That burst of speed should be retained for intercepting passes, powering the breakaway or giving you a step or two of space when sprinting towards the box for a shot at goal. Blow it all too soon and you'll struggle as a result.
  • Remember, if you want to score better bonuses and rewards, you'll need to back them up with the right results. That means playing to your position on the field, seeking out assists and goals and avoiding stupid mistakes like playing way out of position, too many missed opportunities and needlessly sloppy challenges. Remember, your Manager will have a certain expectation for you, so be sure your current performance falls in line with that.
  • Find the right balance between satisfying the Manager and pleasing your Followers. A Fiery/Showman/Brash personality shown in televised interviews will skyrocket your following but risk the ire of your Manager (and his rating of your). However, go with a Cool/Swagger/Nerdy response and you'll keep the boss happy, which will then earn you more game time and a chance of achieving better Earnings.

FIFA 17 The Journey spoilers – how long does it last and what do you get for completing it?

the journey fifa

The biggest new feature in FIFA 17 is its Mass-Effect-inspired story mode named The Journey, which follows fictional character Alex Hunter in his quest to make it from a Clapham Common under-11s team to the Premier League. As of November, Hunter had banged in an incredible 164 million goals for users across the globe – but exactly what else happens along the way? I’ve finished it, and can take you through the key events that happened in my playthrough. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

the journey fifa

The early stages see you choosing your favourite of the 20 Premier League clubs and then, on completing a six-stage academy ‘exit trial’, selecting the one you want to play for. (And it can be a different one to your favourite team selection, should you do wish.) Pre-season encompasses sub appearances in various American stadia – a clever means of showing off the in-game recreations of Seattle and Vancouver’s incredi-grounds – but a handful of matches later, after your parent club signs a star player, you’re farmed out on loan to the Championship.

I start the mode as Crystal Palace, with Harry Kane’s arrival the cause of my departure to the second tier. The three choices given at this point are Newcastle United, Norwich City and Aston Villa - again, smart options on EA’s part as you get to play loan fixtures in official stadiums, with St James' Park, Carrow Road and Villa Park all remaining in the game despite those clubs’ recent relegations.

the journey fifa

Now for the really spoiler-y stuff. Halfway through the season, best pal Gareth Walker departs for your ‘biggest rival’ – in my Palace game, this is set as West Ham – and you’re recalled from loan in order to fill his shoes. You play the rest of the season either in the starting line-up or from the bench, but bizarrely I never once see or replace Kane on the pitch. (He still makes regular appearances in cut-scenes.)

A key character in the mode is your grandad, Jim Hunter. It’s made clear through cut-scenes and Martin Tyler’s on-point commentary that despite a glittering career in the ‘60s, Jim never won the FA Cup – so from January onwards you can see exactly where the story is headed. Not that this predictability makes it any less fun to play.

the journey fifa

Sure enough, my playthrough culminates in an FA Cup Final showdown against Walker’s West Ham at Wembley, with Hunter’s former best mate burning all bridges in the tunnel beforehand by insulting Alex’s absent father. After a relatively straightforward victory, Hunter wordlessly lifts his devastated former pal off the turf, before raising the trophy with his team-mates. Hunter’s dad at this point appears outside the ground, only for Alex to walk away without reconciliation.

the journey fifa

The final cut-scene sees a family celebration at Hunter’s plush London apartment, closing with a news broadcast tipping him for an imminent call-up to the England squad.

The Journey lasts a single season, then, and took me around 16 hours to complete. Five Ultimate Team rewards – mostly gold loan players – are offered along the way, the final one being Hunter as a playable character who you can keep in your FUT squad permanently.

Looking Back at Journey Mode: EA SPORTS FIFA’s Long Shot

Posted by: Christian Silvestri in FIFA 23 August 25, 2023 472 Views

The world of video games has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the years, with technological advancements enabling developers to create immersive and engaging experiences that transcend traditional forms of entertainment.

One such evolution has been the integration of narrative-driven modes within sports simulation games. Among these, “The Journey” in the FIFA franchise stands as a pioneering example, revolutionizing how players engage with the virtual world of soccer.

A New Era of Storytelling in Sports Games

Traditionally, sports simulation games like FIFA focused primarily on delivering realistic gameplay experiences, letting players assume the roles of their favorite athletes or teams on the digital field.

However, with the introduction of “Journey Mode,” the landscape of sports gaming changed forever. This new narrative-driven game mode offered players an immersive storytelling experience intertwined with the familiar mechanics of soccer gameplay.

Introduced in FIFA 17, “The Journey” allowed players to step into the shoes of Alex Hunter, a young and aspiring footballer trying to make his mark in the competitive world of professional soccer.

The mode was divided into chapters, each representing a crucial phase in Alex’s journey, both on and off the field. From his early days as a talented but unproven prospect to his rise to stardom, players were able to shape Alex’s destiny through their decisions and performance on the pitch.

Interactive Storytelling

What set “ The Journey ” apart was its interactive storytelling approach. Players didn’t just control the gameplay; they also influenced the narrative trajectory through dialogue choices and critical decisions.

These choices affected not only Alex’s relationships with teammates, coaches, and friends but also his professional opportunities and personal life. This interactive element blurred the lines between traditional video games and interactive cinema, creating a unique fusion that resonated with both gamers and soccer enthusiasts.

the journey fifa

The emotional depth of the story was further enhanced by the inclusion of cinematic cutscenes featuring high-quality graphics and lifelike animations.

These cutscenes allowed players to connect with the characters on a more personal level, evoking a sense of empathy and investment in Alex’s journey. The mode wasn’t just about winning matches; it was about the emotional rollercoaster that comes with pursuing a dream against all odds.

Celebrities and Realism

Adding a layer of authenticity to “Journey Mode,” FIFA enlisted real-world football personalities to make appearances in the narrative. Players encountered established footballers, managers, and pundits, blurring the line between the virtual and real soccer world.

the journey fifa

This integration not only added credibility to the story but also provided a unique sense of immersion, as players interacted with both fictional and real characters throughout Alex’s journey.

Evolution and Legacy

As the years went by, the FIFA franchise continued to refine and expand “Journey Mode.” Subsequent iterations introduced new characters, storylines, and gameplay mechanics, ensuring that the experience remained fresh and engaging.

While the mode faced criticism for occasionally straying into melodramatic territory, it undeniably pushed the boundaries of what a sports simulation game could offer in terms of narrative depth.

the journey fifa

However, all good things must come to an end. The final chapter of Alex Hunter’s story was told in FIFA 19, as EA Sports decided to retire the character and shift their focus towards other modes and innovations.

The legacy of “Journey Mode,” however, remains firmly intact. It not only opened the door for similar narrative-driven modes in other sports games but also showcased the potential for emotional storytelling in genres beyond traditional role-playing games.

“The Journey” is a testament to the gaming industry’s capacity for innovation and evolution. The introduction of narrative-driven elements within the context of a sports simulation game marked a turning point in how players engage with virtual sports.

Through the lens of Alex Hunter’s journey, players experienced the highs and lows of a footballer’s life, making decisions that influenced not only the outcome of matches but also the course of personal relationships and professional opportunities.

“The Journey” mode stands as a milestone that bridged the gap between interactive storytelling and sports simulation, leaving a lasting impact on the gaming landscape.

What happened to the cast of FIFA's 'The Journey' mode in real life

  • What happened to the cast of FIFA's 'The Journey' mode in real life

Tomiwa Edun, who played Alex Hunter, has appeared on several TV shows since his appearance in 'The Journey' mode.

Jack Kenmare

Jack Kenmare

It's been seven years since EA Sports introduced The Journey to their FIFA franchise; a mode that followed fictional character Alex Hunter in his journey from Clapham Common under-11's to the Premier League and beyond.

After a penalty shootout on a muddy pitch in south west London, the story jumped ahead seven years to an “exit trial” at the National Football Academy, where Alex and his best friend [soon to be bitter rival] Gareth Walker compete to impress Premier League scouts.

The rest, as they say, is history. But seven years on from the much-loved game mode, where are the actors and actresses who played these virtual characters? Tomiwa Edun, who headlined the series as Alex Hunter, has featured in one of the most popular television shows in British history.

Lewis Reeves, the man who played Gareth Walker, is even starring in TV adverts these days, although the 'snake' nickname has followed his own journey beyond FIFA.

Tomiwa Edun (Alex Hunter)

Edun, from Lagos, Nigeria, played The Journey mode's main protagonist Alex Hunter.

Ahead of filming in 2016, the 39-year-old was an accomplished British film and television actor with previous credits including Doctor Who, Merlin, Bates Motel and Elementary.

He studied classics at Cambridge and acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and went on to star in a number of Shakespearean plays around the UK before breaking into film and television.

Since the final Journey Mode storyline, Edun remains a respected figure in the world of acting. He's bagged a number of TV roles, including appearances in Young Wallander, The Capture, The Chelsea Detective and the latest episode of ITV's Trigger Point .

According to his IMDB profile, Edun was a voice actor in popular video game Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

"For me, doing 'The Journey' allowed me to explore a 'what if' aspect of my own life," Edun told VICE in 2016.

"What if I'd been born at a slightly different time, and my own life had taken a different trajectory, and this opportunity had come my way? Because who doesn't want to make it in the Premier League? So many of us have had that dream. So I got to sort of live out that fantasy."

Chris Walters (Danny Williams)

Walters, a Vancouver-based actor from London, played the role of Alex’s best friend Danny Williams in The Journey mode.

Before filming his role as lovable rogue Williams, he trained in acting at The Poor School in London and had a prolific theatre career before breaking into screen acting, according to the EA Sports website .

He appeared in independent films such as Shooting the Musical and FSM , as well as television shows and short films in the UK and Canada.

According to his IMDB page, Williams has enjoyed a number of roles in the TV industry since filming the final Journey Mode series, including a part in the war film Beyond the Line.

He most recently featured in Netflix show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – a supernatural horror drama created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

"It was very fun being Danny Williams," Walters told GOAL in 2019. "He did get bigger as the series went on but then I think that allowed them to write in the quieter moments he had in FIFA 19, when he was by himself in his own apartment and losing all his stuff."

Lewis Reeves (Gareth Walker)

Reeves, from Doncaster in England, went from winning a cup final on Clapham Common to going head-to-head with bitter rival Alex Hunter in the Journey Mode.

We watched a young Walker go from innocent friend to a cocky and arrogant character in the storyline.

In real life, the much more likable Reeves earned his BA in acting from the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama, and later starred in the West End with a role in Our Boys.

The 35-year-old has gone on to appear in a number of popular TV shows, including Misfits, Law & Order: UK, Unforgotten and Crazyhead – and even starred in last year's Audi Christmas advert.

Speaking to SPORTbible in 2021 , he told the story about a kid who waited for him at the stage door after one of his shows in Bath, just so he could call him a snake.

"I still find it funny when people pop up online with my other work on TV and someone will screenshot my face with whatever I'm doing," he told us.

"It's generally along the lines of, 'WTF is Gareth Walker doing as a police officer' or 'who let this snake on my Netflix account?' I always find it funny and love the banter to be fair."

Lisa Solberg (Kim Hunter)

Solberg, another Vancouver-based actress originally from Sydney, Australia, first made an appearance in the Journey Mode on FIFA 18, where she played the half-sister of then-LA Galaxy forward Alex Hunter.

Prior to Lisa's role in Hunter Returns , her first major screen debut was alongside Canadian country music artist Brett Kissel in the video for his song Airwaves, which has over 2 million views on YouTube.

She also appeared in short films such as The Big Cut and Erebus.

According to her IMDB profile, Solberg has featured in two TV shows – Batwoman and Chesapeake Shores – since FIFA 19, as well as the short film Red Moon.

Speaking to FTBL in 2018 about landing the role in The Journey mode, she said: "I had just recently moved to Vancouver from Toronto and 'FIFA 18 The Journey' was one of my first auditions here.

"So, as I was sitting in the audition room I realised everyone else had three scenes auditioning for Kim Hunter and I only had one. Turns out I didn't get sent the other two scenes so I only had 20 minutes to memorise and prepare an extra five pages.

"I got called back a few days later for a 2nd round audition and a week later I found out I booked the role.

"The funny thing is I didn't know what I had booked until I went to the wardrobe fitting and found out it was FIFA! I was completely shocked and as you can imagine very excited."

Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Catherine Hunter )

Duncan-Brewster, a London native, played Alex Hunter's mother Catherine in the Journey Mode on FIFA 18.

Prior to her stint on EA's much-loved series, she has enjoyed a host of TV and film appearances, including EastEnders, Doctor Who, and Star Wars: Rogue One. She is also known for her role as Crystal Gordon in Bad Girls .

Sharon has continued to be a regular on our screens since the Journey Mode ended, featuring on Sex Education, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Earth Mama and Dune.

Danny was part of the same youth academy as Hunter, only being about half a year his senior. Williams then earned a pro contract and was signed by the EFL Championship for his debut. He was first known to have mocked Alex Hunter about his mothers old dodgy car prior to the exit trial. He came across as a bully and persistently kept picked on Alex and Gareth during the Exit Trials. FIFA 18 [ ]

In FIFA 18, he goes to Rio De Janeiro Brazil along with Alex, then starts his career again in the EFL. Later on in the season, Williams signs with Alex's former EPL club and makes quite an impression. He starts in the Carabao Cup against the clubs secondary rivals then if Danny's club wins, he will start in the Carabao Cup against the clubs primary rivals and will take on Gareth Walker . Just before kick off Danny, Lili and Gallo encounter Walker in the tunnel and Walker criticizes Danny about his move to the PL after his time in the Championship. What is ‘The Journey’ and what’s new in the FIFA 19 story mode?

Image of Matt Holyoak

“The Journey” is a story-based mode that was introduced starting with FIFA 17 . You follow Alex Hunter and his close friends in their gripping rise to football stardom. As there have been two seasons of the story, Alex Hunter has changed clubs multiple times, meeting new people along the way. I will give you an overview as to what has happened so far and what you can expect to see as the story continues in FIFA 19 .

In FIFA 17 , you start off as Alex Hunter in his grassroots stage. You are greeted with a cut scene of him playing football as a child, with his mum and grandfather looking on. You go on to play this match manually, eventually winning the game in a penalty shootout. The story then progresses into having a much older Hunter, about 10 years later. He is attending trials to get into his favorite Premier League team. (The player chooses the team.) He attends these trials with his best friend, Gareth Walker.

Signing for the dream club

After the trials are completed manually, Alex Hunter and Gareth Walker make it into their team. Along the way, you meet other characters who can communicate with Hunter, giving him tips or criticising him. After a few games, Hunter sees himself in the shadows of his friend, Walker. Hunter is then transferred to another team, due to the poor performances in his first games. He is obviously devastated by this decision.

Demoted to another team

During this loan period at another club, you meet important characters who will become the core to Hunter’s success in the next season. Dino, the coach, is the person who trains Alex to become one of the best players in the world. Danny Williams becomes Alex’s best friend after some initial confrontations between the two. As Alex continues to play well, his relationships with these two characters become better and better.

Alex eventually returns to his old club after his good performances on loan. However, he is sidelined for the first few matches, especially in the FA Cup competition. He wanted to start these games, as the FA Cup was the only trophy that his grandfather never won as a player. His performances continue to improve as his team wins the Premier League, and Hunter is a big part of the victory. Finally, they progress to the FA Cup final, where Hunter faces his old friend, Gareth Walker. Hunter and Walker have a dispute since Walker neglected their friendship and took the money and fame instead of helping his friend. Hunter goes on to win the FA Cup.

After the game, Alex Hunter exits the stadium and is greeted by his father, someone who left him at a very young age. Hunter knows that his father is coming back due to his fame and glory in football, so he swiftly walks on and does not take any notice. The final cutscene in FIFA 17 is one that includes Alex watching the news, only to find out that he may be called up to play for the national team, a childhood dream of Alex’s.

The latest installment of The Journey starts off with Alex competing in the pre-season competition. He is being linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world. This leads to him being sidelined in his games, and his teammates seem to be turning on him. His agent, Michael, is sure that the deal is going to go through, only to find out that they have been a victim of fraud: The negotiations were all fake.

Departure from the club

While the negotiations were fake, Alex’s previous request to leave the club is still standing, so he is dropped from the first team and told to find another club. He cannot join a rival, however, because of the threat that he will cause to his former club. Therefore, the only option for him is LA Galaxy, an American soccer team. This is where his dad works, so it is the only team that is willing to sign him.

A new start

Alex makes his way to America, meeting icons along the way like Thierry Henry. He later goes on to secure the MLS Championship with LA Galaxy. Meanwhile, he is going through challenging times as he finds out that his father has had another child, a half-sister to Alex. Her name is Kim Hunter, and she is a professional football player too. She later gives Alex tickets to her US Women National Team game against Germany.

Career revival

After his success in LA, Alex is granted a transfer to one of three teams: Bayern Munchen, Athletico Madrid, or Paris Saint Germain. It is the player’s choice. As Alex progresses through the stages of football fame, he is struck with a career-threatening injury. This takes him back to the USA, where he undergoes surgery and rehab. While Alex is recovering, the player has the chance to revive Danny Williams’s career, a friend of Alex’s who is still playing Premier League football. A string of good performances sees Danny Williams win the championship with his side, which well and truly revives his career going into the next season.

The next step

As Hunter returns to full fitness, he puts on some impressive performances and wins the title for his club. He then goes back to LA to spend some time with his family, whom he has grown very close to. The story mode ends when Hunter is called by an agent, who is claiming to be able to get him his dream transfer to Real Madrid.

EA Sports has released some teaser trailers regarding the next iteration. There are some rumors suggesting that the third season is the final in a trilogy. The transfer of Alex Hunter to Real Madrid has been confirmed, according to the trailers. An official story trailer has been announced by EA, which features Danny Williams, Kim Hunter, and Alex Hunter. In FIFA 19 , the player will be able to control all three characters. This is a new feature in FIFA 19 , and the decisions that you make with one player may affect the others. The introduction of UEFA licensing in FIFA also means that this year’s story will be even more immersive because of the realism that licensed competitions offer. The official trailer does a fantastic job of showcasing The Journey.

What do you think of The Journey, and will you play it? If you have any questions or points that you would like to raise, please comment them below. I would love to hear what you have to say. Also, check out why The Journey may not be a good thing for FIFA 19 in another article here .

Major League Soccer

MLS Celebrates Don Garber’s 25 Years as Commissioner

MLS_Commissioner_Don Garber_crop

In 2024, with Major League Soccer’s 30th season just around the corner, the hallmarks of a modern-day, thriving league are plain to see.

Every matchday, soccer-specific stadiums fill to the brim with supporters. Global viewers in over 100 countries can watch games via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV . Players train at state-of-the-art facilities. Teams are active in the transfer market, both as buyers and sellers. World Cup winners and emerging talents make MLS their league of choice.

Things weren’t always this way, though.

Just ask FC Dallas Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, who points to 1999 – when Don Garber became MLS Commissioner – as a tipping point. At the time, MLS was four years old.

“MLS is not what it is today without Don Garber,” said Hunt. “There’s a good chance that it may not even exist because he was so critical in those early days of keeping the league together and figuring out a path for the league to go forward, helping recruit new ownership groups, and convincing skeptical mayors on new stadiums.

“Don will be looked at as one of the most pivotal figures in the history of the sport in this country.”

Hunt’s comments take us back a quarter-century, to when Garber joined MLS after working for the National Football League. He was hardly considered a soccer expert after focusing on the NFL’s international footprint, and many doubted he was the right choice for MLS Commissioner.

Yet 25 years later, Garber has proven to be exactly what MLS needed. Garber navigated choppy waters, steering MLS from a league born amid the United States hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup to one on the rise.

“When I started this journey many years ago, I never thought that the league would be where it is today,” Garber said. “It speaks to the resilience of the sport in our country.”

Steps forward

The growth indicators span far and wide.

MLS started with 10 teams and will soon expand to 30, with San Diego FC joining in 2025. There’s a sizable Canadian footprint, and newcomers, ranging from Atlanta United and Inter Miami to LAFC and Seattle Sounders , have pushed MLS forward.

The on-field product has similarly improved. David Beckham joining the LA Galaxy in 2007 proved transformational, leading MLS to establish the Designated Player rule. Then Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami last summer, kickstarting a new era for soccer in North America with arguably the sport’s greatest-ever player.

All the while, MLS academies develop world-renowned talents.

Alphonso Davies is the most notable example, going from a Vancouver Whitecaps FC homegrown star to a UEFA Champions League winner with Bayern Munich. He captains Canada as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches on home soil. Another shining example is Tyler Adams, a New York Red Bulls product who plays in the Premier League and captained the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Then there’s Leagues Cup , which sees all 47 MLS and LIGA MX teams pause their respective league seasons each summer to compete in the World Cup-style tournament. The revolutionary competition just concluded its second year and offers a direct path to Concacaf Champions Cup .

Of course, MLS Season Pass launched last year as the flagship product of a 10-year, first-of-its-kind partnership with Apple that allows fans to stream every MLS match through the Apple TV app, without local blackouts or restrictions.

The list goes on and on.

Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre, who previously led Premier League mainstays Liverpool, can’t help but admire this evolution.

“It’s really hard to believe in something as much as [Garber] had to believe in MLS all the way through that journey,” Ayre said. “There have been so many difficult moments for the teams, and financially, all sorts of other challenges. To be the person managing and massaging the egos of owners and the challenges in sports, that’s such a hard job.”

Forward momentum

All this begs the question: Where does MLS go from here?

With 25 years of perspective, Garber shares a vision of a broader North American soccer story.

“We have always believed that North America is driving a lot of the energy and a lot of the potential value of soccer on a global basis, and we believe that MLS is one of the drivers of all of that energy,” said Garber. “We have said for many years we want to be the engine behind creating a soccer nation in America, and now it's creating a soccer continent.”

What the league’s next chapter should entail is up for debate. Atlanta United CEO and President Garth Lagerwey said “it’s go time” to keep ascending, while LAFC Co-Managing Owner Larry Berg believes “it’s just a question of the magnitude and the speed” for even more progress.

A simple truth remains, though: With its long-term leader, MLS’ brightest days are ahead.

“At the darkest of times, [Don] was able to help rally the group. And now at the best moments, he’s focused on how to capitalize going forward,” said FC Dallas President Dan Hunt.

“There’s always a right time and a right place, and we picked the perfect Commissioner at the right time and right place to get us from what was not a great place to such an exciting moment in time.”
