Screen Rant

Pokémon go safari zone event is back on, available in-person or remote.

Pokémon GO announces its newly rescheduled Safari Zone events, which will take place in their original real-world locations as well as remotely.

Following their cancellation in 2020, Pokémon GO has announced the return of Safari Zone events, which can be joined either in-person or online. The loss of Safari Zones was one of the many changes Pokémon GO underwent in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lockdowns instituted around the world in response to COVID-19 were a considerable obstacle to Pokémon GO , which is focused on exploring the world and socializing with people. The changes Niantic instituted to allow fans to keep playing from home were well received, and when the company announced its intention to undo those changes, reactions were severe. Following a boycott of the game, Niantic reversed its controversial decision and announced several changes to Pokémon GO , primarily concerning PokéStop distance , in an attempt to satisfy concerned players.

Related: How Pokémon GO Can Reward Exploration Without PokéStops & Gyms

While preserving COVID-conscious gameplay mechanics, Niantic is also planning a return to in-person events. As announced on the Pokémon GO blog, the game's live Safari Zone events are returning this fall. The game has three such events planned, having rescheduled them from 2020. The Liverpool Safari Zone will be held from October 15th to the 17th, the Philadelphia event will run from October 29th to the 31st, and the St. Louis Safari Zone will go from November 12th to the 14th. In a shift from tradition, ticketholders for a Safari Zone will be able to participate remotely wherever they are in the world. Event-exclusive research tasks will be available to everyone who buys in, along with extended times for lures and incense items, which will help fans play Pokémon GO in the middle of nowhere . Featured Pokémon will also appear in the wild regardless of physical location, and players who participate in the Philadelphia event will be able to "take a snapshot for a surprise! " Ticketholders who do attend in person must RSVP ahead of time, so that organizers can keep an accurate count and ensure safety for attendants.

This shift toward the social element Pokémon GO was known for before 2020 comes alongside more conventional updates for the mobile game. Pokémon GO is currently undergoing the Season of Mischief, which is focused on the mythical Pokémon Hoopa. In addition to this ongoing season, Pokémon GO recently announced the Psychic Spectacular event , which introduces the psychic cephalopod Inkay and its evolution Malamar. These join other psychic Pokémon who will be appearing more frequently in the wild and in raids during the event.

Pokémon GO has a long road ahead of it in keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19. Offering one of its defining social events simultaneously in-person and digitally will hopefully serve as a good compromise between the social impact fans remember from its 2016 launch and the safety-oriented environment mandated by the ongoing pandemic. Players will be able to experience the game's new approach to Safari Zones starting next month.

Safari Zone

zona safari pokemon go

A Safari Zone (Japanese: サファリゾーン Safari Zone ) is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can enter and participate in the Safari Game (Japanese: サファリゲーム Safari Game ) to catch rare wild Pokémon .

Safari Zones can be found in the following regions :

  • The Safari Zone in Kanto , located north of Fuchsia City .
  • The Safari Zone in Johto , located north of Route 48 beyond the Safari Zone Gate in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver .
  • The Safari Zone in Hoenn , located north of Route 121 .
  • The Great Marsh in Sinnoh , located north of Pastoria City .

In the games

zona safari pokemon go

The mechanics of the Safari Zones are similar to each other. Most have a $ 500 entry fee, a step limit, a series of distinct areas with different wild Pokémon in each, and 30 Safari Balls , with which players may catch the Pokémon they come upon. The most important of their specific mechanics, however, is that Trainers do not initiate Pokémon battles with the wild Pokémon, but instead must catch them without battling them. The wild Pokémon within Safari Zones are capable of fleeing at any given time.

Differences between games

  • The Johto Safari Zone has no step limit.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the Hoenn Safari Zone does not use typical Safari Zone mechanics, instead functioning like normal routes .
  • Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! effectively do not have a Safari Zone; the area that used to be the Safari Zone is replaced with GO Park , while the zoo area in front is referred to as the "Safari Zone" instead.

Similar examples

  • Johto 's National Park is somewhat similar to a Safari Zone, being a nature preserve for Pokémon and having a thrice-weekly Bug-Catching Contest which shares several aspects with a Safari Game.
  • Kalos 's Friend Safari area, located in Kiloude City , also bears some similarities with Safari Zones, differing in the available wild Pokémon (which are dependent on the Nintendo 3DS Friend Codes of other players) as well as allowing Poké Balls of any variety as opposed to solely Safari Balls.
  • The Pal Park in all Generation IV games bears some superficial similarities to a Safari Zone, being a special area where only a specific type of Poké Ball can be used, featuring possible Pokémon species that otherwise cannot be found, and where the player cannot battle the Pokémon found there. Additionally, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver , the Pal Park is placed in Fuchsia City where it replaces the Safari Zone.
  • In Hisui , the Safari Zone was not yet established, but the main gameplay of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is similar to the Safari Zone.

Unova , Alola , Galar , Paldea , and Kitakami have neither a Safari Zone nor anything similar to or resembling a Safari Zone.

  • In the Generation II games, there is some data for a beta Safari Zone in Fuchsia City , but it was ultimately unused.

Pokémon Go ’s Safari Zone events will return later this year, Niantic announced Thursday . Three dates have been announced for events in Liverpool, Philadelphia, and St. Louis, signaling a return to in-person events for the mobile game, which has focused on virtual events over the past 15 months. Those same Safari Zone events were postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone who has a ticket will be able to participate in the respective event, even if they’re not physically at the Safari Zone. Here are the dates, and details from Niantic on each location:

  • Pokémon Go Safari Zone: Liverpool is now scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, to Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021, in Sefton Park
  • Pokémon Go Safari Zone: Philadelphia is now scheduled for Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, to Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, in Fairmount Park
  • Pokémon Go Safari Zone: St. Louis is now scheduled for Friday, Nov. 12, 2021, to Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, in Tower Grove Park

Players participating in the Safari Zone events will have access to featured Pokémon spawning in the wild, event-exclusive Special Research and Field Research, extended activation time for Incense and Lure Modules, and special 2 km Eggs. Niantic also noted that Philadelphia event-goers will want to “take a snapshot for a surprise.”

Pokémon Go players attending the events in-person must RSVP for a spot to ensure each event can meet local restrictions and safety protocols. Niantic is asking Pokémon Go players to follow health guidelines and travel restrictions when heading out to these events. “We’re working closely with local authorities to design safe event experiences, implementing precautions such as careful line management, social-distancing protocols, and mask requirements for all staff members,” Niantic said.

Niantic also said that the City Explorer Pass, which was originally designed as essentially a Pokémon Go guided tour around a city (plus access to special Pokémon), has been removed from the events. Niantic will refund the cost for people that purchased the add-on.

Niantic announced in August that its pandemic measures in Pokémon Go will remain in the game — spin distance for Gyms and PokéStops was set back to 80 meters. When Niantic reverted the pandemic measures in early August, players were upset. After a large social media campaign, Niantic promised to roll back the changes. On Wednesday, Niantic published a report regarding its pandemic changes.

The COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, with numbers fluctuating across the United States and Europe. Niantic said it will notify ticket holders as soon as possible if the events were to be postponed again.

New dates and details now available for rescheduled Pokémon GO Safari Zone events

New dates and details now available for rescheduled Pokémon GO Safari Zone events

We know how meaningful and rewarding it is to connect and explore together in the real world through our live events. That’s why we’re excited to announce new dates for the Safari Zone events originally planned for 2020!

Pokémon GO Safari Zone: Liverpool is now scheduled for Friday, October 15, 2021, to Sunday, October 17, 2021, in Sefton Park. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.

Pokémon GO Safari Zone: Philadelphia is now scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2021, to Sunday, October 31, 2021, in Fairmount Park. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.

Pokémon GO Safari Zone: St. Louis is now scheduled for Friday, November 12, 2021, to Sunday, November 14, 2021, in Tower Grove Park. Additionally, the start and end times for Safari Zone St. Louis have shifted one hour earlier to provide the best possible on-site experience. Updated event hours are reflected on your ticket. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.

Not only will these Safari Zone celebrations take place in their original park locations, but also ticket holders will be able to participate in the event they have a ticket for, no matter where they are in the world. Global event hours will be based on each participant’s local time; for example, a Friday Early Access ticket for Safari Zone Philadelphia will grant event access on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.

Ticket holders will be able to enjoy the following features, whether they participate in an in-person event or play globally.

  • Featured Pokémon will be appearing in the wild and attracted to Incense.
  • You’ll be able to complete event-exclusive Special Research and Field Research tasks.
  • Incense activated during event hours will last for eight hours.
  • Lure Modules activated during event hours will last for four hours.
  • Special 2 km Eggs will be available.
  • For Safari Zone Philadelphia ticket holders, take a snapshot for a surprise!

All ticket holders who would like to join an in-person event must RSVP. This is so that we have an accurate count of those who plan to attend an in-person event and to make sure we keep the event space safe for distanced gathering. Ticket holders will receive an email with more information on how to RSVP soon.

Safari Zone ticket holders will now see an updated date and time for their event in the Events tab. Ticket selections have not been modified; for example, if you purchased a Friday Early Access ticket, you’ll have a Friday Early Access ticket for the updated event. No additional tickets will be sold for these events.

The City Explorer Pass experience has been removed from these events, and those who purchased this add-on will have it refunded. Niantic will initiate all refunds by October 2, 2021.

We’re working closely with local authorities to design safe event experiences, implementing precautions such as careful line management, social-distancing protocols, and mask requirements for all staff members. When planning your Safari Zone experience, please follow all health guidelines and pay attention to any travel restrictions. If these events must be postponed again due to governmental guidance or direction from local authorities, we will notify ticket holders as soon as possible.

Please be aware of your surroundings and follow guidelines from local health authorities when playing Pokémon GO. Upcoming events are subject to change. Be sure to follow us on social media, opt in to receiving push notifications, and subscribe to our emails to stay updated.
