Tour Edge Exotics Wingman Wedge Review

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge is a very strong performer with a trio of versatile sole options.  Bold look and average-sized footprint.  Good feel and excellent sound.

Introduction

When I think of Tour Edge Exotics, I think of distance.  After initially building their name on cutting edge fairway woods, they’ve expanded to a full range of long game clubs that are among the best.  To expand into the wedge game, TEE turned to their most successful spokesman, Bernhard Langer, for input.  The result is the Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge.

tour exotics wedges

When most OEMs talk about a wedge being “Tour-inspired,” it’s another way of saying that it’s going to be very small.  That’s not the case with the Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge.  These wedges are average in size if not a touch larger.

The other surprising characteristic is the offset.  According to TEE’s specs, every wedge has 3mm of offset .  For comparison, that’s as much or more than some players irons have at the 5I.  This isn’t inherently good or bad – no single specification is – but it is unusual in a wedge with Tour input.

tour exotics wedges

Unlike many current wedges, the shaping of the Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge stays consistent across lofts .  The leading edge has a very gentle rounding, and the overall head shape is closer to round than teardrop.

In the bag, the Wingman has a bold appearance .  The Wingman branding covers much of the toe, balanced against Tour Edge Exotics branding toward the heel.  At the center of the top of the wedge, there’s a round, removable weight surrounded by Vibrcor pockets.  In the midst of all that, what can escape notice is the significant change in thickness across the back of the blade.

Sound & Feel

While the look of the Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge does not play by the “Tour” rules, the feel certainly does.  Soft on center , this wedge produces a firmer feel if you miss the mark.  Feedback through the hands is clear and precise , allowing you to dial in your ball striking.

tour exotics wedges

The sound of impact is extremely pleasant .  Medium in volume, it’s too full, gentle, and round to be a “click” but too clear to be a “thud.”  This is the impact of the Vibrcor TPU.  Audio feedback is much more subtle than the feel.

tour exotics wedges

Performance

As is often the case, Tour Edge Exotics has given me a lot to talk about from a performance perspective.  Starting with the soles , there are three options in the Wingman Wedge – F/S (Firm/Shallow), M/N (Medium/Neutral), and S/D (Soft/Deep).  F/S has the least bounce and the most relief on the trailing edge, heel, and toe.  S/D has the most bounce and very limited relief.  M/N is in the middle.

tour exotics wedges

I was able to test all three soles and found some common traits among them.  In all three – even the F/S with 6 degrees of bounce – I felt that leading edge rose off the turf fairly quickly when I opened the face.  However, all three wedges slid under the ball easily , even on mats.  Best of all, all three wedges noticeably fought their way out of the turf , even in soft, sloppy lies.  To me, this illustrates that bounce is not a be-all-end-all measurement, just one factor to be considered.

One final point on the soles: please don’t take the previous paragraph to say that there’s not a meaningful difference between the three grinds.  I could definitely tell the difference between the amount of bounce in the S/D compared to the F/S, but I wanted to convey that all three are quite good at bailing golfers out on those chunky swings.

tour exotics wedges

The next performance feature that bears discussion is the Milled High-Toe Pad.  This refers to the thicker top of the wedge, something we’ve seen from several OEMs in the last couple years.  The purpose behind this design is raising the center of gravity to lower launch and increase spin.  In my testing, the higher CG combined with the Triple-Traction Milled Face to produce spin that was on the high side of average .  Launch angles were slightly lower than average for a controlled, Tour-preferred ball flight .

tour exotics wedges

Finally, Tour Edge Exotics included something we rarely see in wedges: adjustable weights .  The weight in the center of the head comes stock at 5 grams.  Weights of 2.5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 grams are available to customize the swing weight and feel of the club.  This will be particularly valuable to players who want to use a shaft other than the stock Dynamic Gold 115.

tour exotics wedges

The Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedge blends a variety of interesting performance characteristics to create a wedge unlike anything else I’ve tested.  If you’re looking for a higher CG and some forgiveness paired with a larger footprint and noticeable offset, get to your fitter to find the best combination of lofts and sole grinds for your short game.

Thank you for your review, helpful as always. For these two statements in your review – “At the center of the TOP of the wedge, there’s a round, removable weight surrounded by Vibrcor pockets.” and “The next performance feature that bears discussion is the Milled High-Toe Pad. This refers to the thicker TOP of the wedge, something we’ve seen from several OEMs in the last couple years. ”

Does “top” in each of these statements refer to the same location of the wedge hedge? I’m wondering if the weight (bulge) at the top of the weight is actually removable/swappable, but I’m not seeing it that way in the photos and assume the first quote provided is referring to the section just above the sole, if the club is held in the playing position. I have been wondering when a removable/swappable weight option at the top of the back of the wedge head will become available.

Very curious, Dave

' src=

They do not. In the former, I’m referring to the “top” when the wedge is in the bag as I’m discussing the in the bag look of the wedge. The latter refers to the top of the blade, the top when it’s in a playing position.

' src=

Curious if you got full swings in with any of the wedges you tested and how they performed if so?

Yes, full swings are part of every wedge review. They performed well – slightly lower launch and higher spin than average.

' src=

I apologize if I missed it in your review, but is the Wingman Wedge cast or forged? There is no photo of the hostel where OEMs sometimes tell us if it’s forged, and the use of TPU (VibRcore) for vibration dampening is no longer a reliable indicator. Thanks for a very solid review. Cheers…

Per Tour Edge, these wedges are forged.

Tour EDGE is an excellent golf company. David Grogh is the reason he’s dynamic leader in the golf industry….

Unfortunately, the wedges are not made for Lefties. We’re left out again!

Exotics Wingman Pearl Wedge

The Exotics Wingman Wedge is designed to be Tour Edge's most advanced wedge to date. The extensively milled and loaded with tech Wingman is designed for myriad versatility: greater spin, improved precision, and an enhanced feel with both full swings on the approach and finesse chipping around the green. These all-new forged designs feature feel-enhancing VIBRCOR pockets, a constant offset for added forgiveness and consistency and a larger, Triple-Traction Milled Face for optimal spin control.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 2

FORGED DESIGN WITH VIBRCOR POCKETS

Machined pockets hold Vibrcor TPU for sound dampening and impact feel. These pockets enhance perimeter weighting, boosting forgiveness in the wedge.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 4

ADJUSTABLE WEIGHTING

The Vibrcor pockets include a 5g middle weight for swing adjustment, with options of 2.5g, 7.5g, 10g, and 12.5g for precise customization of swing weight and feel.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 5

TRIPLE-TRACTION MILLED FACE TECHNOLOGY

Triple-Traction face tech has milled grooves, micro grooves between scoring lines, and toe lines. Its 10% larger strike area than traditional wedges enhances spin across all conditions.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 6

The F/S wedge suits firm ground and sweeping strikes. Less sole bounce accommodates shallower paths, reducing turf contact for optimal play on such surfaces.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 7

The M/N 'Mid Neutral' wedge suits medium-firm or varied ground and neutral strikes. Its mid bounce sole enhances play on these conditions, offering versatility and balance.

New Tour Edge Golf Exotics Wingman Pear Wedge 8

The S/D 'Soft Digger' wedge suits soft ground or deep strikes. Increased sole bounce aids in preventing turf interaction, optimizing performance on such conditions.

Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedges: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Wingman-Wedge-MN-Main.png

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Tour Edge Exotics Wingman wedges, which constitutes the broadest line of short-game clubs in the company’s history, combine game-improvement features like a distinctive increase in offset and a larger, multi-friction face and grooves with game-enhancing features like a high-toe weight shift to control trajectory and spin, and three distinct sole grinds to improve each player's impact consistency. The Wingman wedges finally add an element of feel through a forged construction and thermosplastic urethane VIBRCOR inserts behind the face to control vibrations.

PRICE: $140 (16 loft/bounce options from 50 to 60 degrees, three grinds). At retail Oct. 2.

tour exotics wedges

A good amount of offset in irons is viewed as helpful but is often eschewed in wedges. That’s curious because the same theory should hold—that offset makes it easier to square the face. PGA Tour Champions legend Bernhard Langer worked with Tour Edge to develop this wedge with a noticeable three millimeters of offset. Extra weight high in a wing toward the toe section raises the center of gravity. The higher CG helps flatten trajectory and control spin. Thermoplastic polyurethane inserts low in the back body save mass and help to create a softer feel by absorbing unwanted vibration.

3 COOL THINGS

1. A rare focus on playability from a legend. Offset is a pretty regular feature that can make irons feel more playable, particularly for average golfers. But it’s rarely talked about in wedges. Still, the same theory should hold—namely, that it makes it easier to square the face, and with a properly forgiving sole design can make it easier for excessively steep or shallow swings to make cleaner contact. In that vein, the Wingman wedges feature a distinctive 3 millimeters offset (many top wedges have virtually no offset). The idea came from Tour Edge staff player and all-time PGA Tour Champions victory leader Bernhard Langer, who worked with Tour Edge founder and chief designer David Glod and recently put a Wingman wedge prototype in play.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Wingman-Wedge-FS-Top.png

“I am always looking for a forged wedge with the right amount of offset,” Langer said. “What came back has astounded me with its performance. I put one right into play the week I tested it because I could just tell that the design was easier to hit and more consistent than my other wedges.”

2. The highs and lows of the weighting game. The Wingman design, as the name implies, focuses on extra weight high in a wing towards the toe section to raise the center of gravity. That higher CG helps to flatten trajectory and control spin. The middle of the design is thinned out a little to make that extra mass in the toe available, but the Wingman also utilizes a different kind of weight feature behind the face. The thermoplastic polyurethane inserts low in the back body, known as “VIBRCOR,” save additional mass and help to create a softer feel by absorbing unwanted vibration. That polymer has been used on past Tour Edge Exotics irons, like the E723.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Wingman-Wedge-MN-Toe.png

3. More options, more playability. The 16 bounce/loft options give more choices to find the right sole shaping for each player’s game and course conditions. That’s precisely how the grind options are defined. The F/S grind is for firm (F) conditions and players who have more of a sweeping (S) stroke. The lower bounce, particularly on the trailing side of the sole helps keep the leading edge closer to the ground. The M/N grind targets those who play in a variety of ground conditions with more of a neutral attack angle into the ball. Every M/N grind features 10 degrees of bounce. Finally, the S/D grind (“soft digger”) should be best for players whose typical course features softer turf or sand conditions and whose attack angle is steeper.

Further helping playability on the Wingman wedges is a larger overall face, and special friction features, including milled grooves, milled micro-grooves on the flat areas between the scorelines and additional diagonal milling lines in the toe to improve friction on open-face shots.

GolfWRX Spotlight: Tour Edge Exotics EXS Blade wedge review

tour exotics wedges

At GolfWRX, we leave no stone unturned to find the best golf equipment on the market. Although this may come across as an insinuation that some golf equipment can be found under rocks, that is not that case. One of the names that has long intrigued me is Tour Edge. I consider it the next Mizuno (with apologies to anyone who finds fault with that characterization.)

For the longest time, Mizuno flew well under the radar, preferring to spend dollars on research and development, rather than self-promotion and tour sponsorships. Guess what? Same business model at Tour Edge. Those who play TE stand by the equipment as if defending a fortress. That was enough for me to reach out to the company, to find out what is really up with the Illinois firm.

tour exotics wedges

Supplied to me were 54-degree and 58-degree Tour Edge Exotics EXS Blade wedges, with a True Temper Dynamic Gold 115 shaft in each. Over the course of one month, I had the opportunity to put them in play on a variety of golf courses. I decided to not test them in practice circumstances, as that is not the  modus operandi of the majority of recreational golfers. Instead, my thinking was, I’ll pull them out of the bag when I need them, and we’ll see how they feel, how they connect, how the ball reacts, and how my confidence wanes or grows. In other words, I gave them a real-world, weekend-golfer assessment.

After my on-course review, I dug into the true technology behind the release of the EXS Blade series. After a thorough inspection, three elements of the clubhead construction stood out, and I feel justified in sharing them with you here. These aspects are: milling, the flared toe, and sole grind. Each is unique to this club, and separates it from wannabe peers.

tour exotics wedges

The first aspect of milling, as related to these wedges, concerns the  milling out process of moving weight up and down for distance control. We are fallible swingers of clubs, and our strikes are not always where we anticipate. Tour Edge anticipates this. If we deloft or proloft the club face, weight is there to save us to a degree.

The second aspect of milling is milling for precisely-forged tolerances. The grooves are exact. Their spin communication is exact. Our pitches and chips are more exact, thanks to individually-milled faces.

2. Flared Toe Design

My word of the day is  chamfer , which is a cut into a right angle, for transitioning purposes. Like a bevel, it is a carpentry term. There is a chamfer on the rear of the face, directly above the words  Milled Forging . What appear to be aesthetic, is actually part of the weight-positioning process. The flared toe allows for continued distribution of weight (see  milling out above) to enhance shot values.

I’m an aesthetics guy, and the wedges I used previous to receipt of these (54 and 58 degree) models, had a traditional toe, with more of a gentle pear shape. The Tour Edge flared toe stands out to me, or at least it did, over the rounds I’ve played. Reminding my own self that I had to trust the tech, it wasn’t long before the form took a back seat to the function.

tour exotics wedges

3. Dual Groove Construction

Something I had not encountered in wedge development, is dual groove construction. The grooving for the lower lofts (50 and 52 degree) differs from that found on the higher-loft (54, 56, 58, 60 degree) clubs. According to Jon Claffey, vice president of marketing at Tour Edge Golf,

The dual groove construction optimizes groove edge contact, maximizing the spin needed for the diverse array of shots around the green.

What this means to me, then, is that shots that come in lower (and hotter, even fractionally) will benefit from deeper grooves (more spin.) This will align those wedges with the higher-lofted ones, whose descent into the green will be steeper and softer, and will not require the same bite as their more vertical siblings.

tour exotics wedges

These wedges will stay in my bag, replacing the Mizunos that were there before. I’ll look forward to seeing how they wear over time, as five rounds become ten, become twenty, and more. If something magical (or unfortunate) occurs, I’ll speak up below in the comment space, to apprise you of the realization.

If you haven’t heard of Tour Edge before, and also if you have, give them a look. Golf club companies don’t stay in business on pity and charity; they need solid product that emanates from quality research and development. Tour Edge has four golfers on PGA Tour Champions on staff. Consider this for a moment: you’re in the twilight of your career (sad, happens to all of us) so you decide to use inferior equipment? NEVER going to happen. That’s why Lehman, McCarron, Petrovic, and Waldorf opted in on Tour Edge golf for their PGA Tour Champions livelihood.

A lot of milling, milling, milling for a club that look like it was made in China for a few dollars a head!

Beauty and all things are in the eye of the beholder. Exclamation points should be used sparingly. Here is a link to their description page: https://www.touredge.com/exotics-exs-pro-forged-blade-wedge

Wow. I’m a club fanatic from way back and I’m shocked you would say that. These scream premium to me. I guess beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Oct 23, 2020 at 8:55 am

They play so well. I was invited to a premium course in Buffalo last weekend, and had so many 50-100 yard shots into greens (had to punch out a lot 🙂

I was so darned comfortable with them. Hit the ball inside 15 feet on all of those 3rdies into par 4s. Putter was balky, but wedges were stellar.

I’m looking for a 46° to take the place of my PW. Probably end up being a Mizuno. I have a 60° mack daddy • forged raw and a 56° S5 blue ion.

Oct 18, 2020 at 7:46 am

Are you a “looks” player or a “feel” player? As I revealed above, the look matters to me, so I had to get used to a bit different toe on the Tour Edge club. How do the Mack Daddy and Blue Ion toes and top lines compare, or doesn’t that matter? If it doesn’t, awesome…you can pick the best-feeling wedge to fill the 46 degree gap.

If looks do matter psychologically, you’re handcuffed a bit, but there are so many options available. I can’t wait to see how the new Tour Edge lines/toe compare with the one I just reviewed.

They’re also known for their hybrid and fairway woods, but latest models of drivers have got lot of positive reviews, looks like they have the numbers of the big ones despite a lower price.

Oct 18, 2020 at 7:48 am

I bet that you were waiting for this review. You have a nice understanding of their product. As I posited, they became the company that Mizuno used to be. They have sincere quality and are just not “out there” yet. I can’t wait to read about all the new models, and with luck, will have an opportunity to test them. Good luck with your game.

Oct 18, 2020 at 3:50 pm

It’s not a case my irons are Mizuno! Thanks for the answer Ronald.

Launch Monitor Tested: Tour Edge Exotics Wingman Wedge Review

  • These are very keenly priced, but tech-laden forged wedges.
  • There's plenty of fitting opportunity to ensure you get the perfect wedge setup for your game.
  • I really like the leading-edge shape.
  • You will need to like or accept the offset look.
  • RRP £139.00

What we say...

The forged tour edge wingman wedge offers golfers constant offset, to help keep hands ahead of the leading edge. the idea promotes a downward strike which eliminates poor contact and inefficient wedge play. .

Forged wedges are pretty rare today, even rarer are forged wedges designed with input from Bernhard Langer. Langer is one of the best wedge players on tour, he has racked up 12 PGA Champions Tour wins since turning 60, yet the European Ryder Cup legend has found time to help design the new Tour Edge Wingman wedges.

In the UK, Tour Edge equipment is only available from American Golf’s national network of stores, but if you’re looking for high-performance, good value for money wedges any time soon the Wingman, which are £139.99 a pop, are well worth seeking out.

The back and face milling of the Tour Edge Wingman wedge

The key feature is 3mm of constant offset, which Langer feels is really important in helping amateurs and tour pros strike down on the ball and keep their hands ahead of the leading edge. Which, will help increase your wedge play consistency.

“I’m always looking for a forged wedge with the right amount of offset, and eventually started to ask the R&D team at Tour Edge what they thought they could come up with,” said Langer.  Adding “What came back astounded me. I put a prototype in play the week I tested them because the design was easier to hit and far more consistent than my other wedges.”

Everything you need to know about Tour Edge Wingman wedges

Expect a forged feel.

Unlike a lot of modern-day wedges, the Wingman have forged heads. To ensure golfers get maximum perimeter weighting along with great sound and feel, pockets are machined low into the blade and sole. Each pocket is filled with a lightweight TPU (Vibrcor) so you get forgiveness and great impact feedback.

We all need a Wingman

The mass that’s removed from low in the blade is repositioned higher, creating a modern ‘Winged’ weight pad that ups MOI. Tour Edge says golfers should expect a slightly lower, higher spinning ball flight, which along with the additional offset enhances control and accuracy.

The faces and sole bounce of the three different Wingman grinds

Maximum spin with additional fitting opportunities

Every new wedge boasts of offering golfers maximum spin, but I really like Tour Edge’s Triple-Traction approach to stopping power. If you’re looking for the highest spin wedge available you’ll like how the sole grind, face, and grooves of each head are CNC Milled. There are also additional micro-grooves in between each face scoring, and further machine marks on the toe.

So, no matter where shots hit the face you’re guaranteed maximum traction and control. A 10% larger striking face also helps maximize spin no matter what conditions you’re playing from or in.

Each head also comes with a 5g backweight, which can be changed to give you the feel and weight balance (from 2.5g to 7.5g, 10g, and 12.5) you either prefer or need for swing weighting with an alternative shaft.

It’s a touch I really like, and something you don’t get from many wedge brands (only the PXG 0311 Sugar Daddy II offers something similar, but they cost an arm and a leg), it’s certainly something I wasn’t expecting from a wedge that sells for less than $140 or £140.

A graphic to so the shaping of the three different Wingman sole grinds

Sole Grind explanation

To ensure there are options for all golfers and turf/sand types there are three different Wingman sole grinds to choose between.

Tour Edge says the F/S Grind is for firm-ground players who typically have a tendency to sweep shots off the turf and take smaller, less deep divots (this set-up comes with 6° or 8° of Bounce).

The M/N Grind is for players who often play from mid to firm ground or a variety of surfaces that will benefit from a more neutral, less dig-orientated sole setup (the M/N grind comes with 10° Bounce).

And finally, the S/D Grind is for golfers who often play from softer ground and players who have more of a tendency to dig wedges deeper into the turf. Possibly too those who are prone to hitting wedge shots fat (expect 12° or 14° Bounce on this model).

Video: How does the Tour Edge Wingman compare to other leading 2024 wedges?

Verdict: Tour Edge Exotics Wingman Wedge

I’m always on the lookout for good value-for-money golf club options and in 2024 the new Tour Edge Wingman fits that bill perfectly in the wedge market. In the UK Tour Edge can only be bought from American Golf, where the company’s equipment is much more widely available throughout the USA.

The company’s focus has always been on bringing to market good performance equipment that’s built using solid, reliable components for reasonable prices, and the Wingman utterly delivers on its brief.

I love that the heads have been designed in conjunction with Bernhard Langer and unlike most modern wedges it’s forged not cast. Interestingly Langer likes to see offset in his wedges (a feature Nick Faldo looked for in his pomp) as he feels it helps encourage hitting down on the ball and promotes keeping the hands ahead of the leading edge, which he believes helps improve consistency.

A close up of how the Tour Edge Wingman Wedge looks at address

Irrespective of why the Wingman is designed this way there is zero doubt in mind this model represents excellent value for money. To my eye, the constant offset heads, which positions the leading edge slightly further back and more in line with the hosel give the impression it’s easy to hit down onto the ball and slip the head under the ball for shorter more delicate approaches. I also loved the impact feel, sound, and feedback too.

At 7982 RPM our test data has the Wingman down as our fifth-highest spinning wedge in 2024, the backspin drop-off was also smaller than our test average. Golfers should then expect good shot-to-shot spin consistency out on the golf course.

Before you get too carried and order online make sure you take a look at the heads in the real world. The offset does give a slightly different appearance at address, but to me, it’s not distracting at all, which means the Wingman is a steal at $139/£139 in 2024.

Tour Edge Men's Bazooka One Out Wedge (Right Hand, Steel, Uniflex, SW Iron)

Product Description

Tour Edge Exotics E721 Single Iron This ultra-premium extreme distance iron is being led by innovation breakthroughs by Tour Edge, most notable the new Diamond Face 2.0 and the VibRCore Technology that provides the ultimate in power and feel. Dual VibRCore Technology- The Exotics E721 Iron consists of a high-grade TPU injected into the hollow-body pocket to create new speed-inducing and feel-enhancing technology called VibRCore. VibRCore performance gel is injected into the hollow-body cavity to work in partnership with an extremely thick, yet light TPU layer to dampen sound and shock and to produce faster ball speed at impact. Full-Face Diamond Face 2.0 Technology- The iron features a full-face Diamond Face 2.0 technology; the first time Tour Edge has employed Diamond Face technology into and iron design. 103 different diamond shapes behind the face act as mini-trampolines to create faster ball speeds and expand the sweet spot to outer areas of the face so that the full face of the iron is covered. 360-degree Undercut Design- The design is a 1-piece high-strength steel body with a 360-degree Undercut Design that lowers the CG (Center of Gravity) to produce a higher launch and increased face flexing, ball speed and overall distance across the entire face. Extreme Toe Weighting- Extreme Toe Weighting on the Exotics E721 Iron on the toe of the club elongates the sweet spot for added forgiveness. Power Lofted Distance- The lower and deeper CG allowed the E721 irons to be power-lofted to create distance and lower spin rates, while achieving the same launch characteristics as a standard lofted iron.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

tour exotics wedges

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

tour exotics wedges

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

tour exotics wedges

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

tour exotics wedges

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

tour exotics wedges

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

tour exotics wedges

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

tour exotics wedges

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
