Enterprise właśnie odbywa pięcioletnią misję w kosmosie. Niestety, trudy wyprawy już nieco doskwierają Kirkowi, Spockowi, Scotty’emu i pozostałym. Biedacy nie spodziewają się jednak, że nadchodzące wydarzenia gwałtownie wyrwą ich z marazmu. Gdy na horyzoncie pojawia się złowroga rasa, trzeba walczyć o życie i o swoich bliskich. Bohaterowie trafiają wkrótce na odległą planetę, która skrywa dziwną tajemnicę. Tylko kapitan Kirk oraz jego ludzie są w stanie rozwikłać zagadkę nowego świata i zapobiec wielkiemu niebezpieczeństwu.

Kolejna odsłona wielkiego widowiska sci-fi. Dzielny kapitan Kirk i załoga statku kosmicznego USS Enterprise powracają, aby zmierzyć się z kolejnym śmiertelnym wrogiem. Po postoju w bazie kosmicznej Yorktown, w połowie zaplanowanej na pięć lat misji, statek USS Enterprise zostaje niespodziewanie zaatakowany przez żądnych krwi obcych. Załoga statku musi poradzić sobie na nieznanej i pełnej niebezpieczeństw planecie. Nie będzie to jednak łatwe. Przedstawiciele Federacji stają przed wyzwaniem przeciwstawienia się groźnemu wrogowi i zapobieżenia wybuchowi brutalnej międzygalaktycznej wojny. Przyprawiające o zawrót głowy tempo akcji, solidna dawka humoru oraz zapierające dech w piersiach efekty specjalne to tylko niektóre z wyróżników nowej odsłony kultowej serii Star Trek, która ma miliony fanów na całym świecie.

Widowiskowy film, aż szkoda, że w kinie nie oglądałem. Efekty super i nie natarczywe, co najważniejsze. Ciekawe postaci. Podsumowując, kawał dobrego sci-fi.

Jedyne Star Treki, które były fajne to ten z 1979 i Pierwszy Kontakt. Bardziej adekwatny tytuł to "Star Trek: Akrobacje". Wyczyny jak w cyrku. Całość wygląda prawie jak odcinek tasiemcowego "Trekowego" serialu.

Historia mnie nie wciągnęła. Gdyby nie "sceny" z oryginalną obsadą z pierwszych 6 filmów i nawiązanie do final frontier dałabym 5.

Niestety, gorszy od poprzednich części. Jedynie CGI nie zawodzi i miłe dla oka. Wynudziłem się; przewidywalna fabuła, kiepskie dialogi, zero zwrotów akcji, spłycone pewme ciekawe wątki do bólu , wątki uczuciowo-miłosne na siłe wplecione. Prowadzenie kolejnych scen takie sobie… No nie tego oczekiwałem po 2 poprzednich filmach. 6/10

Przemyślenia zawierają bardzo dużo spoilerów.   W nieznane

Tydzień temu, 22 lipca, premierę miała najnowsza odsłona gwiezdnej sagi – Star Trek: Beyond znana u nas jako “Star Trek: W nieznane” w reżyserii Justina Lina (znanego przede wszystkim z Szybkich i wściekłych). Jest to już trzecia produkcja zaliczana do tzw. linii czasowej Kelvina (The Kelvin Timeline), którą zapoczątkował w 2009 roku JJ Abrams filmem Star Trek. Pomiędzy nimi powstał w 2013 r. “W ciemność. Star Trek”.

7-letnia misja do gwiazd Blisko 7 lat temu poznaliśmy odświeżoną załogę, która m.in. pod względem aktorskim mocno podzieliła fanów. Nie da się ukryć, że trzy nowe filmy mocno odbiegają od pozostałych 10 filmów pełnometrażowych osadzonych w świecie Star Treka. Łączy je przede wszystkim to, że twórcy postawili na akcję, szybkie ruchy kamery, pościgi i wybuchy, przez co bardziej trafia do grupy fanów Transformersów niż do trekkerów wychowanych na „starych trekach”, gdzie wybuchy nie były tak spektakularne a sama akcja była bardziej zbudowana na wiedzy science-fiction niż ignorancji praw fizyki przez twórców i totalnej fikcji pomieszanej z brakiem logiki w tym, co dzieje się na ekranie. Owszem, w każdym filmowym i serialowym Star Treku były różne błędy i wypaczenia, ale to wtedy jakoś aż tak nie raziło jak w obecnych produkcjach.

Podróż „W nieznane” zaczynamy od całkiem niezłych scen. Trochę sentymentalnych, trochę próbujących odtworzyć „ducha treka”, którego było mało w dwóch poprzednich odsłonach sagi. Jest całkiem sporo odniesień do oryginalnej serii z lat 1966 – 1969 (TOS) oraz filmów ze „starą załogą”. I to jest chyba najmocniejsza część filmu. Po krótkiej podróży sentymentalnej film zamienia się w to, czym TOS w zasadzie kiedyś był – kosmicznym westernem, tylko na inną skalę – współczesną - pełną efektów komputerowych bijatykę.

Kapitan i spółka… Obsada mostka nie zmieniła się od poprzedniego filmu. Niestety w zapowiedzianym już kolejnym filmie zabraknie Antona Yelchina, który zginął w wypadku na kilka tygodni przed premierą filmu. Czy będzie nowy aktor grający Chekova, czy nie pojawi się on w ogóle? To na razie spekulacje.

Wydaje mi się, że film bardziej niż poprzednie starał się podzielić bohaterów na takie zespoły-pary i pokazać fabułę ich oczyma. W dużym stopniu pomogło w tym spektakularne i przepiękne od strony graficznej roztrzaskanie USS Enterprise o powierzchnię planety, na której dzieje się późniejsza akcja. Tak więc mamy tandemy: Kirk – Chekov, Spock – McCoy, Uhura – Sulu, Scotty – Jaylah.

Każdy tandem ma swoje 5 minut, które wykorzystuje lepiej lub gorzej. Pary można w skrócie scharakteryzować jako: Kirk-Chekov – szukają po lesie innych członków załogi, Spock – McCoy – odnajdują wskazówki o co chodzi Krallowi, Uhura – Sulu – próbują sabotować Kralla, Scotty – Jaylah – naprawiają rzeczy. To oczywiście mega uproszczenie, ale myślę, że właśnie na podobnym schemacie powstał scenariusz.

Ile jest Kirka w Kirku? Chris Pine jako aktor musiał się zmierzyć z legendarną postacią stworzoną przez Shatnera i przyjąć wielką falę krytyki, począwszy od wyboru jego osoby do roli nowego Kirka. Według mnie nowy Kirk zaczyna przypominać Kirka z TOSa – zwłaszcza w pierwszej części filmu, gdy mierzy się ze swoimi wątpliwościami i rozmawia z McCoyem. Pamiętajmy, że w latach 60-tych inny był nieco “kanon piękna”, inaczej byli dobierani aktorzy, inna była charakteryzacja. Chris Pine może być taką współczesną, ładniejszą wersją Williama Shatnera. W momencie powstawania TOSa William Shatner miał 35 lat – Chris Pine 26 sierpnia będzie obchodzić 36. urodziny a charakteryzacja sprawia wrażenie jakby był nieco młodszy.

Najbardziej kontrowersyjny jest dla mnie Spock grany przez Zacharego Quinto. W nowym treku jest on przedstawiony strasznie tak… mdło. Jego gra idzie w kierunku rozchwianego emocjonalnie nastolatka z problemami. Charakteryzacja sprawia, że Spock–Quinto jako Wolkanin jest zbyt wymuskany i ciężko go porównać do starego Spocka stworzonego przez Nimoya, który mimo wszystko miał nieco bardziej diaboliczny i niepokojący (zwłaszcza w latach 60.) wygląd.

McCoy, Leonard H. to nowe wcielenie Bonesa, znanego jako Gnatek, Łamignat, Kostuch i zdaje się Duchołap (różne nasze stacje telewizyjne próbowały różnych tłumaczeń). Karl Urban to idealny aktor do tej roli i w zasadzie nie trzeba więcej pisać. Można mu zarzucić, że po prostu naśladuje DeForesta Kelleya, ale myślę, że to coś więcej. On po prostu czuje postać McCoya.

Postać Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) nie powala, ale też zła nie jest. Kontrowersyjnym krokiem było ujawnienie Sulu jako homoseksualisty. Miało to być uhonorowanie i ukłon w stronę George’a Takei, jednak nie spotkało się to z wielką aprobatą odtwórcy oryginalnej postaci Sulu.

Uhura - Zoe Saldana. Moim zdaniem jest zupełnie inną Uhurą niż w TOSie, co nie oznacza, że gorszą czy lepszą. W porównaniu z Into Darkness postać jest według mnie lepiej zagrana. Nowa Uhura przypomina mi bardziej Gamorę (również grana przez Zoe Saldanę) ze Strażników Galaktyki, która bez problemu obezwładni kilku Klingonów.

Pavel Chekov. W poprzednich częściach był już dobrym aktorem i w tej części też dobrze odtwarza swoją rolę. Wielka szkoda, że Antona Yelchina już nigdzie nie ujrzymy.

Montgomery Scotty. Grany przez Simona Pegga, który podjął się równocześnie być scenarzystą „W nieznane”. Postać jest nadal na bardzo dobrym poziomie. Dodaje całości sporo humoru i wydaje mi się czasem, że Simon Pegg jest nawet lepszy niż pierwowzór.

Jaylah – osierocona, zbieraczka, na obcej planecie, mieszkająca w starym, zapomnianym wraku, utalentowana technicznie, potencjał na inżyniera. Dobrze walczy kijem. Gdzieś coś podobnego było? Może nie ma w sobie „mocy”, ale przynajmniej lubi “mocniejszą” muzykę. Może gdy skończy Akademię, to zobaczymy ją jeszcze w którymś kolejnym filmie?

…Obcy miesiąca… Po tajemniczych sondach, Klingonach, Romulanach, nadludziach i szalonych naukowcach przyszedł czas na hmm... wkurzonego kapitana Gwiezdnej Floty? Nie chcę przytaczać tu całej historii, ale Krall (Idris Elba) to też „wróg skrojony na miarę naszych czasów”. Ofiara polityki Federacji, kapitan, którego lojalność nie została doceniona na tyle, że zwątpił w jej sens i poczuł się oszukany przez „system”. Czy obecnie na świecie nie panuje pewna niechęć do elit, odwracanie się od systemu demokracji i poczucie powszechnej zdrady pewnych ideałów? W nowym ST oczywiście chodzi o coś trochę innego, bo Federacja dążyła do pokoju, może mniej się przejmując jednostkami takimi jak kapitan Edison, ale wydźwięk moim zdaniem jest podobny. Możliwe, że bardziej tę kwestię będą czuć Amerykanie, bowiem przypomina to nieco politykę traktowania weteranów z Wietnamu, Iraku i Afganistanu, gdy po powrocie z walki czują, że rząd ich zostawił bez pomocy.

Ponadto takich mściwych kapitanów/oficerów Gwiezdnej Floty przypominam sobie kilku m.in. w najstarszym TOSie - Garth of Izar, Gary Mitchell, Deep Space 9 – Michael Eddington, Thomas Riker. Jednym słowem los kapitana Edisona nie jest mało prawdopodobny czy też nowym wątkiem konfliktu wewnątrz Gwiezdnej Floty i zniechęcenia wobec Federacji.

…. i inni Ciekawą postacią, która na chwilę pojawiła się w filmie była komodor Paris – dowódca bazy Yorktown. Nie miała może dużo do powiedzenia, ale jej głos przypominał mi kapitan Janeway z Voyagera. Być może dlatego jakoś szczególnie utkwiła mi w pamięci. Zresztą, czy nazwisko Paris to nie jest miły ukłon w stronę ST: Voyager?

Chorąża Syl – załogantka Enterprise. Pod względem charakteryzacji fajnie zrobiona – jej tył głowy to dla mnie oczywiste skojarzenie z Obcym. Chyba jedna z ciekawszych ras pokazanych w nowych trekach.

Kalara – przed mutacją była człowiekiem i załogantką USS Franklin. Krall wysłał ją do bazy Yorktown jako przynętę mającą sprowadzić Enterprise na planetę Altamid. Też bardzo ciekawa charakteryzacja, różniąca się kolorystycznie od reszty złych-obcych.

Technologia Star Trek ma to do siebie, że czasem pokazuje jakąś technologię, która poza filmowym światem staje się prędzej czy później w jakimś stopniu realną rzeczą i przedmiotem codziennego użytku. Można by wymieniać komunikator – telefon komórkowy, komputery przenośne, Google glass itd. Jedną z takich technologii jest uniwersalny translator, dzięki któremu wszyscy obcy porozumiewają się po angielsku. Jest to generalnie duże uproszczenie dla serialu, ale też inspiracja dla inżynierów, jak coś takiego skonstruować. Działanie translatora pokazano w Beyond na przykładzie Kalary, gdy będąc na Yorktown próbowała się porozumieć z załogą (Kalara mówila „po obcemu” a zaraz potem słyszeliśmy angielskie tłumaczenie z urządzenia). Warto o tym wspomnieć, ponieważ próby stworzenia takiego urządzenia tłumaczącego w czasie rzeczywistym już są – np. „Pilot earpiece” ( https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meet-the-pilot-smart-earpiece-language-translator-headphones-travel#/ ).

Yorktown to najnowocześniejsza baza gwiezdna położona na rubieżach Federacji. Moim zdaniem nieco przesadzona, ale może też taka miała być – pokazywać potęgę Federacji w momencie, gdy jest zjednoczona i panuje pokój. Sceny wnętrza przeogromnej bazy były kręcone w Dubaju, więc wiadomo – jest dużo pięknych nowoczesnych wieżowców zamkniętych w gigantycznej sferze. I tu przy okazji sporo nawiązań – sceny dokowań przypominały mi te z The Motion Picture oraz Search for Spock. Sama nazwa Yorktown jest nawiązaniem do tego, że twórca Star Treka, Gene Roddenberry tak właśnie chciał nazwać okręt, który znamy obecnie jako Enterprise. Generalnie przerost bazy przypominał mi miasta znane bardziej z Gwiezdnych Wojen niż Star Treka, co samo w sobie nie musi być złe.

Technologia obcych to trochę zagadka. Wiemy, że na planecie Altamid była jakaś starożytna cywilizacja, która opracowała potężną broń. Nie jest to jakaś nowość, ponieważ w TNG i DS9 pojawiali się np. Ikonanie. Zapomniane cywilizacje występowały też w co którymś odcinku TOSa.

Starożytni, oprócz broni stworzyli też technologię pozwalającą na przedłużenie swojego życia dzięki diecie opartej na pozyskiwaniu sił witalnych. W skrócie – dzięki technologii można stać się wampirem energetycznym. Troszkę podobny schemat był w ST: Insurrection, gdzie źli obcy Son’a także przedłużali swoje życie kosztem mieszkańców planety Ba’ku, wykorzystując magicznie odmładzające właściwości cząsteczek znajdujących się w pierścieniu wokół planety.

Niemal sto lat zajęło załodze Franklina rozpracowanie tej technologii i ruszenie na złą Federację. Czemu tak długo? Może katastrofę Franklina przeżyło mało osób i trochę to trwało zanim cokolwiek udało im się zrobić z technologią obcych? Zbyt długo skupili się na poszukiwaniu drugiej części broni? Celowo opóźniali atak, żeby urosnąć w siłę? Może po prostu mając technologię zapewniającą w zasadzie nieśmiertelność czas odgrywa nieco mniejszą rolę? To pytania do sporej dyskusji i wielu domysłów, niekoniecznie odkrywających logiczne postępowanie przeciwników Kirka.

Rój. To całe mnóstwo małych, dwuosobowych myśliwców, skoordynowanych ze sobą poprzez jakiś rodzaj więzi cybertelepatycznej. Trochę jak Borg. Jednocześnie taka jedność stanowiła ich siłę jak i słabość. Można się czepiać sposobu w jaki rój został pokonany, bo jest on przedstawiony na miarę komiksu Marvela, ale cóż, nie zapominajmy, że jest to film science-fiction, z naciskiem na fiction i nie zawsze wszystko jest logiczne. Aczkolwiek patrząc trochę z dystansu – chodziło o zakłócenie funkcjonowania wielu okrętów, których ruch był uzależniony od ruchu innych okrętów. Wprowadzenie chaosu do uporządkowanego systemu komunikacyjnego i spektakularnych kolizji myśliwców roju. Może naciągany, ale jakiś to sposób był. O tym też można spekulować, czy byłoby możliwe czy nie.

Poza różnymi gadżetami i technologiami obcych mamy też ciekawy holoemiter, którego działania w otwartej przestrzeni zapewne pozazdrościłby EMH z Voyagera, urządzenia maskujące i… motocykl. Po obejrzeniu Star Treka z 2009 już wiemy, że Kirk lubi szybkie maszyny i tym razem twórcy posadzili go na dość archaicznie wyglądający w tym wszystkim motocykl. Sceny jazdy na nim w terenie to już spora doza fantazji i szybkiej wizyty w ambulatorium (chyba, że przyjąć, że po mało przyjaznym terenie pokazali jak jechał “holoobraz”).

Warto też wspomnieć o “kapsułach Kelvina” - nowym wyposażeniu okrętów instalowanych po wydarzeniach z USS Kelvin. Są to kapsuły ratunkowe dostępne z poziomu mostka. Gdyby były na Kelvinie, to George Kirk prawdopodobnie by się uratował.

Oprawa wizualna i muzyczna Co tu dużo mówić. Kawał dobrej roboty zarówno pod względem muzyki (komponował ponownie Michael Giacchino), jak i grafiki komputerowej, której użyto w ogromnej ilości. Ponadto w filmie widzimy nowe mundury, które moim zdaniem lepiej się prezentują niż poprzednie “koszulki we wzorki”. Przypominają bardziej poważniejsze mundury TNG w barwach znanych z TOSa.

Znowu do gwiazd? Star Treka można poznać po kilku elementach takich jak: okręt, zły obcy, kapitan z dzielną załogą, wielkie zagrożenie dla Ziemi/wszechświata, sprytne/spektakularne pokonanie wroga i na końcu nadzieja na lepszą przyszłość. W zasadzie wszystkie te elementy w najnowszym filmie występują. Tylko czy to jest to, co chcieli zobaczyć starzy trekkerzy, którzy na pamięć znają tytuł losowo podanego numeru odcinka TOSa? Tak naprawdę w Beyond zostało upchniętych trochę rzeczy, które są miłym akcentem dla starych fanów i spowodują lekki uśmiech, ale wśród łez. Opakowano je w nowy styl – aktorski, scenograficzny, montażowy itd., lecz tym samym stał się bardziej niż kiedykolwiek filmem akcji zbliżonym do nowych Gwiezdnych Wojen. Nie ma w nim aż takiej epickości, jaką czuło się w starszych produkcjach. Dopiero zaczyna być jakaś chemia i więź między załogą. Nie sądzę, żeby po wyjściu z kina 15-latek pomyślał „chcę zostać astronautą i odkrywać nowe światy”. Prędzej będzie to brzmiało: „chcę zostać kapitanem okrętu i wysadzać kosmitów w powie… próżnię”. Tylko też nie jestem pewien czy filmy pełnometrażowe miały zawsze spełniać tę rolę, czy „misja” nie była zawarta w serialach takich jak TNG a kinówki, to tylko streszczenie przygód, rozrywka, mająca przyciągnąć do kina całą rodzinę i wypuścić osoby, które będą chciały zagłębić się bardziej w całe uniwersum Star Treka. Być może mając te 20 lat mniej po wyjściu z kina chłonąłbym to uniwersum i odkrywał oryginalnego Kirka, Picarda, Sisko, Janeway i Archera. I mam nadzieję, że właśnie tak będzie.

W moim odczuciu jest to film dobry. Lepszy niż poprzednie kierowane przez JJ Abramsa, ale nadal musi udowadniać, że z trekiem łączą go nie tylko nazwiska postaci i nazwa okrętu. Po ochłonięciu z wrażeń mogę powiedzieć, że obejrzałem jakiś stary, zmodyfikowany odcinek TOSa w nowym wydaniu i dałbym takie mocne 7/10.

Pozostaje czekać teraz na nowy serial Star Trek: Discovery, który miejmy nadzieję będzie dużo bliższy wizji Roddenberry’ego, ale pewnie też opakowany w gadżeciarstwo i efekciarstwo nowoczesnych seriali (byle nie przepakowany).

and then someone asked me if it was "good." and i said "good? GOOD? it made me want to stand up and shout "REMEMBER MOVIES!?!?" these things are relative, people. STB is to Warcraft what Chris Pine is to *me.*

everyone is super charismatic. i liked that nothing really matters. i liked that there's no sense of needing to connect it to a bigger mythos. i liked that the *constant* fan service was barely perceptible for noobs like me (super trekkie Jordan Hoffman helped ID all the references for me afterwards). much of the action is jumbled and the villain is a bit of an afterthought (what else is new?), but at least he enters the fray with panache.

I watched it again with Justin Lin commentary and came to a brain-melting realization: There is a foolproof way to determine if a modern Star Trek will be good.

If Chris Pine’s hair is parted to the right, as in Star Trek and Star Trek Beyond , the movie will be good.

If Chris Pine’s hair is parted to the left, as in Star Trek Into Darkness , the movie will be bad.

Henceforth, this shall be known as The Pine Directive .

I've got to tip my hat to you Justin Lin. This is what a summer blockbuster is all about. Star Trek Beyond is full of fantastic characters. There are so many great character moments through out the film. Several laughs to be had. Plenty of awesome action set pieces. A good story (Simon Pegg's writing was aces). Still love this one. It feels like the most comfortable of the Kelvin films — and at the same time the fact that the actors and creators might be feeling a little complacent is woven into the story. 

I know I have a soft spot for very meta films that interrogate their own purpose, but this one does that really well. (It’s also super timely and allegorical, another way it carries forward the tradition of the original series.) Justin Lin is a much more exciting director than Trek usually gets; he’s looking at this stuff from a new angle and that’s very much reflected onscreen (I love the shot of the Enterprise taking off from space dock from the perspective of the ship looking back at the Franklin.) Most underrated Trek movie ever?

I will fight for this movie any day for so many reasons. The villain is a compelling foil, our hero is humanized by high-functioning depression, the crew still gets a chance to shine, the team up pairings work, the pacing is rock solid, the action is so chaotic and exciting but I never lose sense of place.

Wow. The irony is stellar.

Back when it was announced that Abrams was going to reinvigorate Star Trek, I (yes, I'm a huge Trekkie) was optimistic. Turns out I was right as Abrams' Star Trek was a great tribute to the show and the Trek universe.

Then Into Darkness happened which was more of the same. Actually, it was hardly a movie, more a show reel of fan servicing highlights. Doing that once is fine, it opens up new possibilities, doing it twice is just lazy.

So here's the third film. No more Abrams in the director's seat, a script co-written by one of the cast, not a hint of tribute-itis in sight and what we get is one of…

Not because the Federation is really eager to send its best captain and starship on a ridiculously risky mission they know almost nothing about.

Not because Idris Elba is fully utilized as the villain, or that his worldview and rationale for universal destruction make much sense or matter.

Not because it's that much fun to watch the Enterprise get systematically shredded, or that the swarming action scenes match the "zen chaos" (h/t Josh Larsen) that Lin has offered elsewhere.

Because fan service was (seemed to be?) kept to a minimum.

Because even though Lin is breathlessly intent on pure action escapism over commentary about "the times we live in," you can't dismiss its egalitarian spirit and optimism despite the times…

It’s been a while since the crew of the Starship Enterprise visited a strange new world in search of new life and civilizations. The Star Trek of television was full of strange new worlds; the Enterprise seemed to discover one every single week. The Trek movies, so focused on special effects, violence, and intricate revenge plots, have frequently strayed from Trek ’s original mission. And while there’s plenty of action and excitement in Star Trek Beyond , there’s also a clear attempt to return this series to its core principles: Exploration, diplomacy, teamwork, and the hope for a better tomorrow. After the missteps of the punishingly bleak and the unfortunately rehashy Star Trek Into Darkness , it’s a necessary and welcome course correction; a Star Trek back into the light.

Basically Into Darkness only, you know, graceful and self contained instead of dour busyness cluttering frame after frame and referential setbacks. Justin Lin links TOS's color and adventure with the modern sensibility of JJ's Trek, and it's essentially a perfect balance until it decides to overstay its welcome (the final climax is ooooooooof). But until then, Beyond offers some of the most balletic, vivid set-pieces in a recent sci-fi fantasy (Lin loops and loops for dizzying effect, vibrant hues strobe in and out, warfare is fought in the expanse of space and it's still claustrophobic); reconfiguring the past (ie: the utter bullshit of Into Darkness ) until it literally crashes back to its roots. In the wasteland known as summer 2016, this is a goddamned marvel, never stopping but unafraid to take in all the exotic sights and sounds. Pure and simple.

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

The voyages of the Starship Enterprise came to a sudden and premature end on June 3, 1969, with the airing of the final episode of the Star Trek original television series. Ironically, the show’s cancellation came just six weeks before humanity embarked on its first voyage to land on another celestial body. Although the show ran for only three seasons, it generated a devoted fan base disappointed by the cancellation despite their write-in campaign to keep it on the air. But as things turned out, over the decades Star Trek evolved into a global phenomenon, first with the original episodes replayed in syndication, followed by a series of full-length motion pictures, and eventually a multitude of spin-off series. With its primary focus on space exploration, along with themes of diversity, inclusion, and innovation, the Star Trek fictional universe formed a natural association with NASA’s real life activities.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry first had the idea for a science fiction television series in 1964. He presented his idea, a show set in the 23 rd century aboard a starship with a crew dedicated to exploring the galaxy, to Desilu Productions, an independent television production company headed by Lucille Ball. They produced a pilot titled “The Cage,” selling it to the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) network that then bought a second pilot titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” NBC introduced the show to its fall 1966 lineup, with the first episode “The Man Trap” airing on Sep. 8. To put that date in perspective, NASA launched Gemini XI four days later, one of the missions that helped the agency achieve the Moon landing nearly three years later. Meanwhile, Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise continued its fictional five-year mission through the galaxy to “seek out new life and new civilizations.” The makeup of the Enterprise’s crew made the show particularly attractive to late 1960s television audiences. The major characters included an African American woman communications officer, an Asian American helmsman, and a half-human half-Vulcan science officer, later joined by a Russian-born ensign. While the show enjoyed good ratings during its first two seasons, cuts to its production budget resulted in lower quality episodes during its third season leading to lower ratings and, despite a concerted letter-writing campaign from its dedicated fans, eventual cancellation.

Despite the show’s cancellation, Star Trek lived on and prospered in syndication and attracted an ever-growing fan base, turning into a worldwide sensation. Often dubbed “trekkies,” these fans held the first of many Star Trek conventions in 1972. When in 1976 NASA announced that it would name its first space shuttle orbiter Constitution, in honor of its unveiling on the anniversary of the U. S. Constitution’s ratification, trekkies engaged in a dedicated letter writing campaign to have the orbiter named Enterprise, after the starship in the television series. This time the fans’ letter writing campaign succeeded. President Gerald R. Ford agreed with the trekkies and directed NASA to rechristen the first space shuttle. When on Sept. 17, 1976 , it rolled out of its manufacturing plant in Palmdale, California, appropriately accompanied by a band playing the show’s theme song, it bore the name Enterprise. Many of the original cast members of the show as well as its creator Rodenberry participated in the rollout ceremony, hosted by NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher . Thus began a lengthy relationship between the space agency and the Star Trek brand.

During the development of the space shuttle in the 1970s, the need arose to recruit a new group of astronauts to fly the vehicle, deploy the satellites, and perform the science experiments. When NASA released the call for the new astronaut selection on July 8, 1976, it specifically encouraged women and minorities to apply. To encourage those applicants, NASA chose Nichelle Nichols, who played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the Starship Enterprise, to record a recruiting video and speak to audiences nationwide. She came to NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston in March 1977, and accompanied by Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut Alan L. Bean , toured the center and filmed scenes for the video in Mission Control and other facilities. NASA hoped that her stature and popularity would encourage women and minorities to apply, and indeed they did. In January 1978, when NASA announced the selection of 35 new astronauts from more than 8,000 applicants, for the first time the astronaut class included women and minorities. All distinguished themselves as NASA astronauts and paved the way for others in subsequent astronaut selections. Nichols returned to JSC in September 2010 with the Traveling Space Museum, an organization that partners with schools to promote space studies. She toured Mission Control and the International Space Station trainer accompanied by NASA astronaut B. Alvin Drew . She also flew aboard NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) airborne telescope aircraft managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California, in September 2015.

Meanwhile, the Star Trek brand renewed itself in 1979 as a full-length motion picture with the original TV series cast members reprising their roles. Over the years, several sequels followed this first film. And on the small screen, a reboot of sorts occurred in 1987 with the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation, a new series set in the 24 th century aboard the Enterprise-D, a next generation starship with a new crew. That series lasted seven seasons, followed by a near-bewildering array of spin-off series, all built on the Star Trek brand, that continue to this day.

James Doohan, the actor who played Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, the Starship Enterprise’s chief engineer, had early associations with NASA. In April 1967, Doohan visited NASA’s Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center in California, spending time with NASA test pilot Bruce A. Peterson. A month later, Peterson barely survived a horrific crash of the experimental M2-F2 lifting body aircraft. He inspired the 1970s TV series The Six-Million Dollar Man, and the show’s opening credits include film of the crash. Doohan narrated a documentary film about the space shuttle released shortly before Columbia made its first flight in April 1981. In January 1991, Doohan visited JSC and with NASA astronaut Mario Runco (who sometimes went by the nickname “Spock”) toured the shuttle trainers, Mission Control, and tried his hand at operating the shuttle’s robotic arm in the Manipulator Development Facility. In a unique tribute, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong , the first person to step on the lunar surface , spoke at Doohan’s retirement in 2004, addressing him as “one old engineer to another.”

George Takei, who played Enterprise helmsman Lt. Hikaru Sulu, and his husband Brad, visited JSC in May 2012. Invited by both Asian American and LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups, Takei spoke of leadership and inclusiveness, including overcoming challenges while in Japanese American internment camps during World War II and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. He noted that Star Trek remained ahead of its time in creating a future when all members of society could equally participate in great undertakings, at a time when the country struggled through the Civil Rights movement and the conflict in Southeast Asia. The inclusiveness that is part of NASA’s culture greatly inspired him. JSC Director Michael L. Coats presented Takei with a plaque including a U.S. flag flown aboard space shuttle Atlantis’ STS-135 mission. He also visited Mission Control and spent some time with Robonaut.

Leonard Nimoy played the science officer aboard the Starship Enterprise, the half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. The actor watched in September 2012 when space shuttle Enterprise arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, on the last leg of its journey to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where it currently resides. “This is a reunion for me,” observed Nimoy. “Thirty-five years ago, I met the Enterprise for the first time.” As noted earlier, the Star Trek cast attended the first space shuttle’s rollout in 1976. Following his death in 2015, European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti paid tribute to Nimoy aboard the International Space Station by wearing a Star Trek science officer uniform, giving the Vulcan greeting, and proclaiming, “Of all the souls I have encountered … his was the most human.”

Captain James T. Kirk, played by actor William Shatner, a life-long advocate of science and space exploration, served at the helm of the Starship Enterprise. His relationship with NASA began during the original series, with references to the space agency incorporated into several story lines. In 2011, Shatner hosted and narrated a NASA documentary celebrating the 30 th anniversary of the Space Shuttle program , and gave his time and voice to other NASA documentaries. NASA recognized Shatner’s contributions in 2014 with a Distinguished Public Service Medal , the highest award NASA bestows on non-government individuals. NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Communications Robert “Bob” N. Jacobs presented the medal to Shatner. The award’s citation read, “For outstanding generosity and dedication to inspiring new generations of explorers around the world, and for unwavering support for NASA and its missions of discovery.” In 2019, Shatner narrated the NASA video We Are Going , about NASA’s plans to return astronauts to the Moon. He has spoken at numerous NASA-themed events and moderated panels about NASA’s future plans. On Oct. 13, 2021, at the age of 90, Shatner reached the edge of space during the NS-18 suborbital flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard vehicle, experiencing three minutes of weightlessness.

Elements of the Star Trek universe have made their way not only into popular culture but also into NASA culture. As noted above, Star Trek fans had a hand in naming the first space shuttle Enterprise. NASA’s Earth observation facility aboard the space station that makes use of its optical quality window bears the name the Window Observational Research Facility (WORF). The connection between that acronym and the name of a Klingon officer aboard the Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series seemed like an opportunity not to be missed – the facility’s official patch bears its name in English and in Klingon. Several astronaut crews have embraced Star Trek themes for their unofficial photographs. The STS-54 crew dressed in the uniforms of Starship Enterprise officers from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, the second full-length feature motion picture of the series. Space shuttle and space station crews created Space Flight Awareness (SFA) posters for their missions, and more than one embraced Star Trek themes. The Expedition 21 crew dressed in uniforms from the original series, while the STS-134 crew chose as their motif the 2009 reboot motion picture Star Trek.

As much as Star Trek has influenced NASA, in turn the agency has left its mark on the franchise, from episodes referencing actual and future spaceflight events to NASA astronauts making cameo appearances on the show. The first-season episode “Court Martial” that aired in February 1967 featured a photograph of the December 1965 Gemini VI launch adorning a wall aboard a star base. In the second-season episode “Return to Tomorrow,” airing in February 1968, Captain Kirk in a dialogue about risk-taking remarks, “Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn’t reached the Moon?” a prescient reference to the first Apollo mission to reach the Moon more than 10 months after the episode aired. Astronaut Mae C. Jemison , who credits Nichelle Nichols as her inspiration to become an astronaut, appeared in the 1993 episode “Second Chances” of Star Trek: The Next Generation , eight months after her actual spaceflight aboard space shuttle Endeavour. In May 2005, two other NASA astronauts, Terry W. Virts and E. Michael Fincke , appeared in “These are the Voyages…,” the final episode of the series Star Trek: Enterprise.

In the 2016 documentary “ NASA on the Edge of Forever: Science in Space ,” host NASA astronaut Victor J. Glover states, “Science and Star Trek go hand-in-hand.” The film explores how for 50 years, Star Trek influenced scientists, engineers, and even astronauts to reach beyond their potential. While the space station doesn’t speed through the galaxy like the Starship Enterprise, much of the research conducted aboard the orbiting facility can make the fiction of Star Trek come a little closer to reality. Several of the cast members from the original TV series share their viewpoints in the documentary, along with those of NASA managers and scientists. Over the years, NASA has created several videos highlighting the relationship between the agency and the Star Trek franchise. In 2016, NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden led a video tribute to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the first Star Trek episode.

In 2021, on the 100 th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s birth, his son Rod hosted a virtual panel discussion , introduced by NASA Administrator C. William “Bill” Nelson , about diversity and inspiration, two ideals the Star Trek creator infused into the series. Panelists included Star Trek actor Takei, Tracy D. Drain, flight systems engineer for the Europa Clipper spacecraft at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, NASA astronaut Jonny Kim , Swati Mohan, guidance and operations lead for the Mars 2020 rover at JPL, and Hortense B. Diggs, Director of the Office of Communication and Public Engagement at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The mutual attraction between NASA and Star Trek stems from, to paraphrase the opening voiceover from the TV series, that both seek to explore and discover new worlds, and to boldly go where no one has gone before. The diversity, inclusion, and inspiration involved in these endeavors ensure that they will live long and prosper.
