Babolat Pure Aero Tour Racket Review

The Babolat Pure Aero Tour is the heavier version of its younger brother, the Pure Aero. At 315g, this racket is a yellow and black rocket launcher for tennis balls.

If you’re looking to add a little pop to your shots then the Pure Aero Tour is a great option to get a little bit more out of your game, but it also maintains an adequate amount of feel and control.

The sleek frame of the Pure Aero Tour gives it a very light feel which encourages fast, aggressive strokes.

If you generate a lot of racket head speed then the Pure Aero Tour is going to accentuate this, bumping up the RPMs you can generate on the ball.

If you are someone who is looking to add a little bit more topspin to your shots, then purchasing the Pure Aero Tour is an easy way to accomplish this.

Discover your perfect racket and string combo!

Thanks in large part to tennis legend, Rafael Nadal, the Babolat Aero series are some of the most recognizable rackets on the market.

In fact, over the years, many a young player has donned a bandana and gone out and bought the Pure Aero Tour, looking to recreate the heroics of the great Nadal.

The good news for those seeking to play like Nadal is that this racket really does help you play a little bit more like him.

Sure, you might have to start running a lot more and increase your intensity levels by 10,000%, but it will give you more spin, and more power.

If you like a flashy racket, then you’ll love both the look and playability of this one. Its sleek frame is eye-catching and extremely maneuverable.

The newest version features FSI Spin Technology, which has increased the distance between the cross strings, giving you even more grip on the ball, and thus, more spin.

This latest upgrade from Babolat has taken the Pure Aero Tour from being a racket that gets a lot of spin to a racket that can generate an unbelievable amount of spin.

Also, if you’re a player who has the ability to create angles and get your opponent running all over the court then you’re going to love this racket.

The Pure Aero Tour definitely leans towards the feel of a lightweight racket that makes hitting powerful topspin shots easy, but it doesn’t sacrifice everything else in order to achieve that.

It’s certainly not the racket for someone who wants a buttery level of feel and control from their racket, but it is still a genuine all-around racket, rather than just a power machine like the Pure Drive Tour Plus .

We took the Pure Aero Tour out for a little test drive and had some contrasting opinions.

As it is Lawrence’s regular racket, I (Will) took on the review in order to keep things unbiased!

Lawrence loves to hit the ball as hard as he possibly can, and then hit the next ball even harder, so the Pure Aero Tour is a pretty logical choice for him!

Groundstrokes

8 out of 10

Like most rackets these days, the  Pure Aero Tour  is aimed at the aggressive baseliner, and its easy power and spin make it an attractive proposition for anyone that likes to hit through the ball.

Think of Rafael Nadal’s game, and you almost have the perfect template of what this racket is good at, lots of racket head speed, lots of spin, and lots of energy.

Off the backhand side, I was looking forward to seeing what the “easy maneuverability” of the Pure Aero could offer me.

With heavier rackets, I often feel like I don’t generate the racket head speed I should on my backhand side, and I did feel a slight difference when using the Pure Aero.

I was swinging through the ball nicely, but I kept dropping the ball just a little short.

I felt like I really missed the extra weight of my Head Speed Pro, just to finish off the shot and get a bit more drive through the ball.

This racket would perhaps suit someone who likes to use their backhand to really move their opponent around the court with spin.

The initial power is very easy to get and any spin you create is accentuated by the Pure Aero Tour, so aggression through spin is rewarded.

This style of play is much more suited to how I hit my forehand, and it did make my forehand feel extremely effortless.

Without putting in too much energy I was able to hit powerful forehands with great net clearance and lots of spin to push my opponent back.

The only problem was, it was a little too easy to generate pace, which sometimes caused some depth control issues.

This shouldn’t be seen as a criticism of this racket though, it just didn’t suit my style is all.

The number of racket sales the Pure Aero series has says everything about the racket; it is very good indeed. It just needs the right person to be using it.

If your game plan utilizes a lot of spin to move your opponent around the court, and you like being able to generate easy power then the Pure Aero range will tick a lot of boxes for you.

We gave the Pure Aero Tour an 8 out of 10 for groundstrokes.

This is a very good racket for groundstrokes, it has easy power, lots of spin, and allows for a lot of racket head speed.

Its only drawback was the lack of feel, it just felt unremarkable, the ball pinged off the strings and you didn’t really get much feedback.

9 out of 10

I think the whole town heard when I hit my first serve of the day with the  Babolat Pure Aero Tour ; it sounded like a bomb exploded on impact.

This racket is an absolute missile launcher on the serve, so if you’re looking for more mph on yours, then this racket is ideal.

The balance of the racket feels like you’re swinging fresh air, yet it still feels strong and stable on impact.

Of course, you should always remember that there is a fine balance between power and control, and once again I felt like the Pure Aero Tour lacked the feel that I normally look for in a racket.

However, that extra power can be invaluable if you can manage to keep it in the court, and I managed to hit plenty of booming aces when I gave the Pure Aero Tour a whirl in a men’s doubles match!

As with this racket’s ability on groundstrokes, whether you get along with it will depend on preference.

For those players who value feel and control more than anything else, you’re not going to get along with the Babolat Pure Aero Tour.

It simply doesn’t give you the kind of feedback and sense of connection to the ball that something like the Pure Strike would do.

But, if you’re looking for something that is power-based yet still a very good all-round racket then you won’t find many better candidates than this one.

The Pure Aero Tour gets a 9 for serves. The power potential is unbelievable, but you’ve got to figure out how to tame it!

7.5 out of 10

The  Babolat Pure Aero Tour  was a solid racket at the net. It’s got a fairly large sweet spot, so it’s quite forgiving if you don’t happen to hit the ball right out of the middle.

Additionally, its great maneuverability ensures you can easily get your racket in position when someone has hit a big ball at you.

The only negative at the net was once again the lack of feel, it’s quite a pingy racket which is nice for popping away volleys and hitting with some depth, but it just lacked a little something on the finer shots.

The Pure Aero Tour would suit someone who comes to the net only when they’ve set the point up perfectly and they know they’re only likely to have to hit one volley.

It’s not the kind of racket you see a chip charger using, but that doesn’t stop it being an effective volleying weapon in the hands of someone who’s worn their opponent out from the baseline before coming in to put the volley away.

The Pure Aero Tour gets a 7.5 for the volleys. Essentially, volleys are not what this racket is designed for, but considering it is a power-based racket it is not too bad at the net.

If you’re playing more singles than doubles, and love to come in to finish off points from a very dominant position then this racket will be more than enough at the net.

Overall, this is another Babolat racket that does exactly what it promises to do.

You can’t fail to feel the extra power and spin the  Pure Aero Tour  can give you, and if you’re looking for a racket with these things then you won’t be disappointed.

Naturally, if a racket is going to give you buckets of spin and power, then you can’t expect it to offer tons of control and feel as well, so you will have to decide what it is you’re looking for in a racket.

If the answer is a bit more power and a bit more spin, then we recommend you seriously consider the Babolat Pure Aero Tour.

It may not get you playing exactly like Nadal, but it will certainly give you a great deal more spin.

In the end we gave the Babolat Pure Aero Tour an 8 out of 10.

Final Thoughts

It is a really good racket for people who are looking to quickly add a bit of spin and power to their game, but we were put off by the lack of feel that led to.

Also in the Babolat range is the Pure Strike. Despite both being relatively light, intermediate to high-performance rackets, the Pure Aero and the Pure Strike couldn’t be more different.

The Pure Aero is firmly a power racket, while the Pure Strike is a precision, control racket. If you’re not sure what you are looking for in a racket, then it is well worth giving both of these rackets a try.

You might just find the one that is really going to transform your game!

These rackets do exactly what they advertise, and we can certainly see why they are so popular.

So long as you are aware of what you’re looking to develop in your game, you can’t go wrong with these rackets.

While the Pure Aero Tour didn’t particularly suit my preferences, I really enjoyed accidentally smashing my first serve at 300mph to the back fence (“wink face”).

Babolat Pure Aero 2023 Racquet Review

Wilson Clash 100 Racquet Main Image

The Pure Aero is no stranger to trophy rooms, and you'll need an entire warehouse to store the combined winnings of Rafa, Dylan Alcott, Caroline Wozniacki and Francesca Schiavone — all players who wielded versions of the Pure Aero in the biggest moments of their singles careers. Now, the next generation is ready to continue the trend. This 2023 Pure Aero update feels more forgiving and controlled, without sacrificing the spin this family of racquets is known for producing. Due to the lower average swingweight our playtesters detected easier maneuverability, and the redesigned string spacing in this version let them pinpoint their targets without fear of overhitting from the baseline. The 2023 Pure Aero accelerated through contact, giving shape and depth to their shots. The story at net also focused on maneuverability, which allowed for both sharp angles and soft touch on volleys. Serves and returns leveraged a fast and full stroke to create spin and pace. Overall, there was a slight decrease in power, but on court our team found a more balanced and user-friendly hitting experience. A broader range of skills, from strong beginner through seasoned tournament player, stands to find success with this racquet. Babolat has found a wonderful middle ground between control and power that our playtesters think will more than satisfy the Pure Aero diehards, as well as newcomers in search of a spin monster.

  • Perfect balance of power, spin and control
  • Increased control and maneuverability
  • Nothing we could agree on

Bottom Line

Our playtesters found the v8 to offer slightly more power and maneuverability than the last generation. Blade lovers will feel right at home with this update's feel, stability and overall versatility.

Strong beginner to advanced

Groundstrokes - Score: 84

As the Pure Aero has historically enjoyed worldwide success, our playtesters stateside and in Europe were excited to see how the 2023 Pure Aero compared to previous versions. Brittany , from Tennis Warehouse, noted some similarities alongside a few new traits. She started by saying, "Just like Pure Aeros of the past, this 2023 update was fast and spin-friendly in my hands. One thing I love about the Pure Aero is that it adds the perfect amount of spin to my groundstrokes without me having to alter my game style or strokes. With it being so easy to swing, I was able to whip my wrist (at times pretending I was Rafa!) and create some great angles to really open up the court. I found this generation to offer a little more control — in other words, less free power — compared to the previous racquet. Initially my groundstrokes were landing a little short, but after a small adjustment I found myself picking a target and taking full cuts at the ball without fear of overhitting. I talked to another playtester after one of our hits, and he said my ball was coming through the court heavier than normal. I definitely found it easier to be aggressive and stay on offense."

Chris felt like the playability was a culmination of a decade of incremental improvements all coming together. He said, "I loved hitting groundstrokes with this latest Pure Aero because the trajectory from the stringbed reminded me of the early AeroPro Drives. It felt like this racquet had a more direct response compared to recent versions. The previous Pure Aero was a step in the right direction, and I feel this one pretty much nailed what I want out of a Pure Aero. The one surprise was the feel. This Pure Aero feels softer and more dampened at impact. I'd go so far as saying the feel was a tad muted, but I liked it and still felt connected to the ball. I had enough feel to place my shots well. I found easy power and fantastic access to spin, but what I liked most was the confidence I had when going for the corners or flirting with the lines. I was able to drive my backhand slice well and enjoyed hitting topspin off either wing even more."

Jason appreciated the differences in this new version, but not all of them aligned with his play style. He explained, "This is a more maneuverable Pure Aero than the previous generation, and that change definitely had its positives and negatives. The positive is the racquet felt very whippy, which allowed me to hit with tons of spin and find sharper angles. I felt that control was improved as well. The negative is that I wasn't hitting with as much depth and power as I could with the last generation."

Our Tennis Warehouse Europe team echoed many of the same findings, with a few new observations that helped round out an in-depth look at what this racquet brings to the table. Valerie knows the Pure Aero line inside and out. She said, "I have played with the Pure Aero dating back to when it was called the AeroPro Drive — for over 15 years in total. Therefore, the racquet suits my game style and vice versa. I am able to generate a lot of spin and power with my forehand and hit a low slice, which is my preferred shot on the backhand side. The 2023 Pure Aero is very forgiving and has a big sweetspot. Additionally, it is very maneuverable and makes it easy to generate racquet head speed." Alex added, "I was able to produce huge topspin from the baseline, so my shots landed deep in the court, then I could follow up with drop shots to keep my opponents guessing. This new Babolat Pure Aero allowed me to change my strategy during the point and still find success."

Benji found an impressive balance of specs from this update. He said, "Even though it's still a powerful racquet, I had more control than the former version. It felt super comfortable, and I think it is more user-friendly. This updated Pure Aero will pair well with many different styles of play. As always with this model, I could produce a lot of spin that translated very well to playing on clay courts."

Volleys - Score: 83

The Pure Aero took speed and maneuverability to the next level when our team attacked the net. For Jason , the racquet flowed from forehand to backhand. He described, "I really enjoyed this racquet up at net. It felt quick and responsive. I thought the sweetspot was fairly generous for those off-center shots. I also thought there was enough power to put the ball away with ease." Benji agreed with Jason, adding, "This racquet combines touch and power volleys. It was the perfect weapon to end the point quickly or finish the point after a long rally working my way forward to the net. Also, the balance of the racquet allowed me to react quickly if I had to block a heavy shot."

Whether poaching or playing defense, Brittany was confident with the Pure Aero in her hands. She explained, "Up at net, I appreciated the speedy response I received from the 2023 Pure Aero. I was able to reflex volleys back during a quick exchange, and I felt I could punch the ball deep to end the point. The racquet was stable enough that I never felt pushed around. The feel was decent; I didn't hit a ton of drop or angled volleys, but that isn't my game anyway." Valerie added, "The racquet was quick, and I felt very connected to the ball. I was able to hit deep and powerful volleys as well as drop shot volleys and angles."

Chris found the open court using traditional and creative volleys; this racquet could do it all. He said, "I played several sets of doubles with the 2023 Pure Aero and loved how fast it felt at net. I was able to punch volleys with solid pace and still trust I'd find my targets. There was enough inherent power to help me out on tough pickups and stretch volleys. I felt like I could still get decent depth on those shots even when I couldn't get a lot behind the ball. My drop volleys and angles were working well, and I felt more tuned into those shots with this update compared to the previous version."

Alex preferred hitting crisp volleys deep in the court. He explained, "It was still a bit hard for me to totally control the ball at net. Even though I felt better control than the previous version, I prefer a more touch-oriented frame. The overall feel was great, though, and I had success hitting through the court to put the ball away."

Serves - Score: 84

The Pure Aero delivered in a big way on serves. Over the years, this is one area where Aeros have always shone, and Valerie thought Babolat raised the bar yet again. She said, "With the 2023 Pure Aero, I can hit my first serve super hard and flat without any effort. On second serves, the racquet helps me hit a nice kick serve. In addition, I like to slice it out wide from the deuce side. This new version allowed me to be successful hitting all of those serves."

From the movement on the ball to hitting her targets consistency, Brittany was in the zone on serve. She said, "It is no secret Babolat makes great serving racquets. The Pure Drive has sat in the top spot for me for 10-plus years as my favorite racquet to serve with. After this playtest, I will be altering that title to favorite racquet for hitting first serves. The 2023 Pure Aero has now taken the spot for favorite racquet for hitting second serves. The biggest reason is that I can generate racquet head speed and maintain it throughout a match without any arm fatigue. The other reason is that the spin potential helps bring the serve down into the box and then jump out of my opponent's strike zone. I was able to hit my second serve consistently and eliminate some of the double faults that sometimes creep in when I play. I will say that first serves were still highly successful with this racquet. I was able to hit a variety of spins and place the ball deep in the box. No complaints!" Benji echoed Brittany, pointing to placement as a real weapon. He continued, "I can serve easily everywhere in the service box; I can hit any spot. The combination of hitting a big first serve, finding my spot, and creating a lot of spin put my opponent in a bad situation."

The differences between the outgoing version and the 2023 Pure Aero all felt like upgrades to Chris . He described, "Getting great power and spin on serves are Pure Aero expectations, and this update delivered. The racquet was easy to swing, and I liked the way I could snap it through contact. Even though I liked the previous version on flat serves, I found I had better precision with this update. My second serves were working well too. I had fun slicing the ball into the returner's body, as well as kicking it away to force a stretched return."

Like the rest of the team, Alex appreciated what this racquet added to his serves. He said, "The serve was one of my favorite shots with the 2023 Pure Aero. The racquet was smooth overhead and snapped through contact. For my first serve, I liked to slice my first serve, keep it low, and use it to force my opponent to hit a defensive return. On second serves, I went with a kick that moved the ball away from or into the body of my opponent." Jason added, "Serving with this racquet was really easy and provided me with great results. It was effortless to accelerate through contact to get lots of spin on my second serves. I also found that targeting was better with this racquet than previous Pure Aeros."

Returns - Score: 86

Our playtesters stayed aggressive on return, using the maneuverability of the Pure Aero to generate speed and spin. Chris explained, "The Pure Aero felt fast and responsive on returns. I liked taking a good rip when hitting topspin returns, and I found the racquet whippy enough to create some nice angles. The dampened feel kept things comfortable. My slice returns were working well. I was able to drive the slice to be more aggressive or float it to buy some time to help neutralize a tough serve."

Alex felt a difference in control between this racquet and the previous version. He said, "Returning with this 2023 Pure Aero produced mixed results. I was left wanting additional stability whenever I was facing a big server, but I loved taking a big swing at a second serve. When I did have the time to line up a forehand and attack, the response was more controlled than the 2018 Pure Aero."

Jason was able to rip heavy topspin returns, but he struggled when he was forced to hit a defensive return. He said, "I thought this was a great racquet to be offensive with. Because it is so quick to swing, I felt like I had time to take full cuts at the ball, even when I was going against some first serves. However, when blocking a return back, I felt like the balls were landing shorter than anticipated."

This racquet's impressive maneuverability made for some reliable returning from Valerie . She described, "With the 2023 Pure Aero I can hit aggressive returns even under pressure thanks to the easy maneuverability. I am able to shorten my swing on first serves and still hit the ball with a lot of power and control." Benji continued, "Because of the stability of the 2023 Pure Aero, I felt confident and could be aggressive from the very first hit. I even hit a few return winners. I didn't feel overwhelmed by powerful first serves; the racquet held up totally fine."

Brittany found enough control to narrow her targets and take calculated risks on returns. She explained, "This racquet made it a toss-up whether I preferred to serve or return (and that very rarely happens). It did everything well on returns, and I didn't have to think about it too much. It felt like an extension of my arm, and I was very confident being aggressive on both first and second serve returns. Sometimes the 2023 Pure Aero gave me too much confidence, and I was going for a little too risky of a shot, but that made it fun at the same time."

Overall - Score: 84

Valerie - "I love the power and spin the 2023 Pure Aero generates, combined with the touch on drop shots and volleys. It's the perfect combination of power and control. I also really like the glossy finish, which feels nice in my left hand."

Jason - "Maneuverable, very easy to swing and generate spin with. Improved control."

Brittany - "I like the spin potential and maneuverability. The 2023 Pure Aero is extremely user-friendly and versatile."

Benji - "The perfect balance between power and control. I didn't need a lot of time to get acclimated. I feel aggressive in every position on the court."

Chris - "My favorite Pure Aero yet. Great pace, great spin, a comfortable feel and enough precision to help me find my targets."

Alex - "The comfort is better compared to the previous model. It lets me try to dictate the point."

Valerie - "None."

Jason - "Not as easy to hit with depth and not as powerful as previous Pure Aero racquets."

Brittany - "Not much! I just personally prefer the feel and playability of the Pure Drive."

Benji - "It was comfortable, but sometimes I didn't feel any difference between my shots. For example, when I was attacking or just trying to be patient, I experienced the same feel off the stringbed."

Chris - "Not a huge fan of the cosmetic up close, but I like that it looks like an AeroPro from a distance."

Alex - "I wanted more stability and touch."

Comparing the racquet to others they've tried, our testers said:

Valerie - "I do prefer the previous version a bit more because it is even more powerful and helps me hit the ball deeper in the court. It takes a bit more effort with the 2023 Pure Aero , and I had to adjust my swing to hit the ball as deep. On the other hand, I felt like I hit the ball with even more spin with the 2023 Pure Aero . When I was in college and played more and was stronger physically, I would have preferred this new version because it offers more control when hitting groundstrokes aggressively. Furthermore, I am very happy with the improved sound the racquet makes when hitting the ball. It always sounded a bit off to me with the previous one."

Jason - "This is the most user-friendly Pure Aero to date because of that low swingweight. Compared to the previous Pure Aero, this update has more access to spin, but not as much power."

Brittany - "I hit the 2023 Pure Aero side by side with the previous generation over the course of the month-long playtest. I noticed a few changes. The first was the feel. It does feel a little softer than the previous generation, although it still has a slightly stiffer feel than I prefer. The second was the control and launch angle. I thought the previous generation offered a little more easy power and a higher launch angle. With the updated denser string pattern, I found more control. Other racquets that play similarly include the Head Extreme MP, Dunlop SX 300 and Prince Vortex 300."

Benji - "This is the third time I have playtested a Pure Aero, and the 2023 Pure Aero is my favorite by far. I still need more control, but I loved playing with it and taking part in this playtest."

Chris - "If you have ever wanted a slightly softer feeling version of the AeroPro Drive then I think you'll love the 2023 Pure Aero . I also feel this racquet improves on the previous version's move to that AeroPro Drive response of a more direct flight off the stringbed compared to the loopier response I found two versions ago."

Alex - "The new 2023 Pure Aero has less control and feel than the racquet I've been hitting with a lot lately, the Head Speed MP 2022. That said, it is more maneuverable and spin-friendly than the Speed MP. Overall, I think it will prove to be user-friendly for a lot of different players, but it just doesn't line up with what I want."

The ultimate in spin just got better!

Some of the most exciting new stars of world tennis are at the heart of Babolat’s latest racquet launch, the eighth generation of the Pure Aero.

The racquet range that has become synonymous with Rafael Nadal has been updated and relaunched with a new design and seven new models, but mainly to reflect the way rising marquee names like Carlos Alcaraz , Félix Auger-Aliassime, Leylah Fernandez and others are influencing how players at all levels of the sport are playing.

The new range has emerged from a consumer-centric approach that recognises that there are different spin profiles which need slightly differing racquets, so that everyone can “own their own spin”.

Learn more about the range

Babolat’s ‘Spin’ pillar

Since the early 2000s, Babolat has had three pillars at the core of its racquet development: power, spin and control. The idea is not simply to reflect what tennis players want out of their primary tool; the company worked out more than 20 years ago that spin would become increasingly important in the evolution of tennis, and began developing a frame that would maximise the effect of the strings the family-owned firm has been making since 1875.

Since then, Babolat has continued with its three pillars. Power is the pillar that feeds into the ongoing development of the Pure Drive (colour-coded blue), spin feeds into the Pure Aero range (colour-coded yellow), while control – and specifically the ability to play attacking tennis by using the opponent’s power – provides information for the development of the Pure Strike range (colour-coded white and red).

The spin pillar has expanded to include footwear. “We have developed what we call our ‘360 approach” says Olivier Carlier, Tennis Group Marketing Manager at Babolat, “a name which reflects the full circle of the racquet in a stroke to develop maximum spin. The ‘360 approach’ combines the racquets, strings and shoes. The adhesiveness of the strings gives the grip that allows for a certain amount of ball rotation after impact, the aerodynamic frame maximises the ability to whip up the ball, and spin begins with a solid footing, as the rotation of the body for the spin starts from the ground – which is why Babolat has put such effort into shoes in recent years.”

pure aero tour passionetennis

The eighth Pure Aero generation

As well as Nadal’s own distinctive racquet – painted in an array of colours that he favours or has close associations with – there are seven racquets in the 2022 Pure Aero range: the Pure Aero 98, the Pure Aero, the Pure Aero +, the Pure Aero Team, the Pure Aero Lite, and two junior racquets (the JR26 and JR25). All have been developed with evolving playing styles in mind.

There is an increasing tendency for players to camp on the baseline, which means they have to take the ball on the rise if their opponent hits deep. These players need the spin not just to get extra bounce off the court (or less bounce if they’re playing with slice) and find sharper angles, but to manage the trajectory, as heavy topspin reduces the downward arc of the ball. Players like Alcaraz and Auger-Aliassime play this kind of tennis.

But there are still many players who like to hit the ball at the top of the bounce to maximise their power, but still need the spin to control the trajectory and thereby reduce the risk of hitting long. Such players include Fernandez, Danielle Collins, Jennifer Brady, Benoit Paire and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and this type of player is still very prevalent among competitive players in sub-professional tennis.

And then there is Rafa, who is in something of a category of his own, as no-one – with the possible exception of Jack Sock on the forehand – has been able to match Nadal’s consistent spin as measured in rotations per minute. He generally takes the ball just after the height of the bounce, allowing him to stand further back but still profit from a fairly high ball.

Pure Aero 98

The racquet aimed at the baseline campers is the Pure Aero 98. This is effectively the second generation of – and successor to – the Pure Aero VS, a model launched in 2020 based on the Pure Aero but with a slightly smaller head size and various other features to provide more precision (the Pure Drive and Pure Strike ranges also have a ‘VS’ variant).

At 305g, it is the heaviest of the range, but has a slightly smaller head size – the ‘98’ refers to ’98 square inches’ (632 cm2) as opposed to the standard 100 in2 (645 cm2). It also has a slightly different weight distribution, and while the string pattern on all Pure Aero racquets is 16x19 (16 main strings, 19 cross strings), the Pure Aero 98 has a slightly narrower pattern (16x20) which provides a bit more control.

Pure Aero, Pure Aero Team and Pure Aero Lite

The other four adult racquets in the Pure Aero range are aimed at those players who look to take the ball at the top of the bounce. They all have a 100in2 head, but there is 15g difference in weight. The Pure Aero weighs 300g, the Pure Aero Team 285g, while the Pure Aero Lite is just 270g. The Pure Aero + is effectively the same as the Pure Aero in weight and balance, but it’s 1.5cm longer for those who like a longer handle. In terms of playing characteristics, the Team and the Lite are almost identical, so it will simply come down to which weight a player feels more comfortable with.

All four have a 16x19 stringing pattern. Nevertheless, the Pure Aero has a slightly narrower pattern while the Team and Lite models have a more open pattern providing more power and facilitating the downward trajectory. The Team and Lite models are aimed at players looking for a racquet to help them to generate spin whereas the Pure Aero is for punchers looking for a bit more control to secure their trajectory.

The visual design of the Pure Aero range of frames is also symbolic. “The design is based around the image of fragments,” says Olivier Carlier, “which is deliberate because we believe the new generation of players will be smashing many traditional notions of how to play tennis, so the design represents the new generation that breaks codes and disrupts.” The traditional yellow remains, augmented with dark grey and occasional white.

Babolat has also introduced natural flax fibres on the new Pure Aero racquet to help reduce the malign vibrations that can cause injuries in the arm, because flax has very good absorption properties combined with mechanical resistance.

Small flax patches – known as Natural Flax Filtration Technologies, or NF²-Tech – have been placed at three o’clock and nine o’clock on the frame and on the handle of the Pure Aero. On the Pure Aero 98, the flax patches are only at three o’clock and nine o’clock on the frame because the type of player this racket is aimed at likes to keep some vibration in the hand in order to better feel the impact of the ball on the strings. As well as enhancing the feel, the flax patches also make the sound of the ball hitting the strings distinctly different.

The Pure Aero, Team and Lite models combine flax patches on the handle with a slightly different vibration filtration technology on the head. This is a layer of viscoelastic rubber known by the trade name Smacwrap.

Olivier Carlier added, “In developing the new Pure Aero range, we have been totally consumer-centric. We have organised trials with players and focus groups to validate with them the rationale about the playability of our products. We have researched and developed some clear benefits for today’s tennis players, benefits that can be perceived by the players we are targeting, so there really is a Pure Aero racquet for whatever kind of spin a player feels is most suited to their game, and everyone can own their own spin.”

Professional players began using the 2022 Pure Aero range at the start of August when the US Open Series of tournaments began. Many of Babolat’s contracted athletes customise their own racquets, so what they play with has minor variations compared with the racquets sold in sports shops and online.

With enough practice, you can chill and play with easy power (ie. Pure Aero, Pure Aero VS) and super easy spin. High launch and the ball dips at the last moment. You can play and chill without seriousness towards tennis skills & techniques, tennis form and tennis footwork These are the players I always try to avoid Not to mention those who play with Pure Drive (with string set-up like a rocket launcher), trying to blast you on each hit. The PA23 is a little underpowered. The PAVS and ET are both a little heavy, since they are platform racquets.

lol. I have all three of those rackets. The major brands all make nice rackets. But this thread is kind of silly. The number 1, number 6 and number 11 players in the world are all using a Pure Aero VS. And you're claiming they don't have proper form and footwork? Maybe you can go visit them with your wooden racket and give them a few pointers.

I thought it was pretty well established that Nadal played with the original Aeropro Drive with 9 grams of lead at the tip and 3 in the butt and a swingweight around 360.

riddick said: Many experienced amateur tennis players know it. Those top ATP guys (ie. Alcaraz, Nadal, Rune) just use the paint job of the retail Pure Aero and Pure Aero VS Their racquets are not the retail ones. The mold, the lay-up (then the flex RA), and the customisation of their racquets are very different from the retail ones. Only the paint job is the same. If you are a real tennis lover and you are experienced, you will know what kind of shots are hit with a racquet of swingweight 320 pts and what kind of shots are hit with a racquet of swingweight 335 pts. Click to expand...

Also...Alcaraz, Rune and Nadal are all pretty well noted to use RPM Blast strings. You are claiming this is false or that the strings are repainted to look like RPM Blast strings? Maybe you can give us some inside info on what strings they are actually using. Or send them an email informing them about the dangers of shaped poly.

It's common knowledge among experienced tennis players that there is "a paint job thing" and the top professionals use pro stock with customisation and the racquet bear a paint job. They do not use the retail racquet (maybe except Federer, after unique customisation of the RF97 by P1 shop). They just endorse the racquets and receive endorsement fees. For those who are particularly obsessed with the gear of tennis professionals, trying to convince themselves they are using the same racquet that the top ATP professionals are using, they have a lot ... a lot to learn ... RPM Blast is an octagonal shaped poly (closer to a round poly), which does not bite as hard as a 4-sided poly. It's less erratic in its life cycle. The pros switch to a racquet with fresh strings much more frequently than amateurs in a match anyway. Low power and closer to a round poly than a pointed & sharply shaped poly. It has good playability for a few hours. Most experienced players know it has low value comparing to its price.

Why don't they just make the racquets the pros actually use retail so everyone can use what they really do

Professional

Try different logic: manufacturers engineer the best race car level racquet for their top juniors, or sometimes competitors during their career - all brands. That's how Wilson made the first Tour 90, and 97S, KP88 etc, and exactly how Babolat made the Aero VS 2017 for Felix. And then 3 years later this actual Aero VS for Alcaraz and Rune. Head made Extreme Tour for Musetti, a racquet that didn't exist before, just like most Babolat VSes or Tours didn't exist until they made them for a top upcoming player. Too stiff, too direct feeling and too demanding for players who don't swing it fast enough, so next versions are always softer, for club players and juniors etc. but the top ATP player always continues to play with the original racquet made exactly for them, but in a different paintjob. Rafa's racquet is the original Aero Pro that was made for him when he was 17, just like Alcaraz' and Rune's racquet is the actual VS made for them when they were 17. Nothing mysterious there. Even if the player wants some tweaks later in their career it is still the same racquet with minimal differences. Seen so many times. Gravity Pro was made for Zverev, and then several other top pro players adopted it, but it's too demanding even for young competitors, and I won't be surprised one bit if this upcoming 2023 Gravity Pro turns out to be a hit with players who found the first GP too demanding. That's what sells racquets.

Hall of fame.

As was posted above, Alcaraz and Rune both use the Pure Aero VS in a form very close to stock form.

ulunxtns said: I remember someone in this forum who actually has Alcaraz's racquet confirmed that he's using stock form VS with some customization. So not all of them are using paint job racquets. Plus the upcoming Rafa 2023 will be the racquet that he will be using since the racquet will be his specs. Click to expand...
riddick said: I have read that kind of threads/stories too. The poster claimed he grabbed hold of the racquet Alcaraz used. He purported it's a stock Pure Aero VS (even claimed without customization). Experienced tennis players have tried different player-style racquets of different swingweights and different flexes. The kind of shots played by Alcaraz just could not be produced by a retail Pure Aero VS (stock form). A racquet having swingweight of 321 pts could not produce these shots. Many people have tried adding lead to Pure Aero VS to increase swingweight and it did not take lead well (did not work out). Also, an RA of 67-68 was too high for top pros who use fully body motion (engaging the kinetic chain, core muscles and all body parts) to play real competitive tennis. There maybe a new Pure Aero Rafa coming up, copying the way of RF97. More revenues for racquet manufacturers (not bad for Babolat at the end of Rafa's career). Click to expand...

As I often say, recreational players should play with a racquet they can maneurve and with which they can improve tennis skills and techniques and not be obsessed with what the top pros are using (as usually they are not using the retail version with their face on the placard). There are stories/hearsays on the Internet, which are not verifiable (or not worth the effort to properly verify). Another thing is top ATP pros generate their own power and spin with their whole body (hence having a wide dynamic range of power and spin controlled by them), not relying on a stiff racquet (for easy power) and spin effect grommets (for easy spin). They need predictability and consistency from their gear. I also know Dan Evan's play style and the shots he produces. Very doubtful about this story. A lot of experienced recreatonal tennis players prefer to use 327SW to 330SW (their comfort zone). A lower swingweight would mess up their timing and swing. The swingweight used by the ATP pros have come down in the last 10 years (maybe due to some useful/successful technologies implemented on racquets and strings). However, currently to survive in the ATP circuit, 330SW to 340SW is a meaningful range.

All the arguments about pro player rackets aside, I just want to say that I also hate playing against topspin players using Babolat pure drive and pure aero. the ball bounces high and push me back or forcing me to play rising ball all the time.

ulunxtns said: I agree that the same specs does not equal to the same racquet. But I feel like the new Rafa will be very close to what he’s actually using since the concept is creating the actual Rafa’s racquet like RF97. I’m not 100% sure he will use it, he probably will still use APD, but the new one is gonna be as close as you can get if you want to play his specs. Click to expand...

He used Wilson 6.1 95 as a junior (IIRC) The ATP professionals use modern strokes and engage full body motion. Swingweights of 330-340 pts are a piece of cake to them. They play with fast to super fast Racquet Head Speed with racquets of 340-350SW. They have good maneuvrability with such racquets. An unsuitably low swingweight would make their swing go haywire and they cannot finely control their swingpath when going for strong shots or finishing shots. Also, they would be wickedly butchered by their opponents. They are not the weekend tennis players, beginners or intermediates. Click to expand...

Aaaaand we’re back to 0 days since TT ranted about pro stocks being the key to success

OP is just trolling. Everyone is different and have an ideal racket that suits them, but only a specialist can find that perfect racket for them. For that find the travel man with a jam. I heard he can even transform a rec player into a pro just by changing the racket.
